The phenology of the herbaceous fern Didymochlaena truncatula in a Brazilian submontane tropical rainforest is described. A total of 23 individuals were observed over 18 months (May 2012 to October 2013). The number of live leaves, leaf production, leaf mortality, leaf growth, and fertility were recorded monthly and correlated with local rainfall and temperature. The D. truncatula plants remained evergreen with a monthly mean of 6.49 ± 0.75 leaves that were produced almost continuously at a rate of 6.13 ± 1.46 leaves plant?1 year?1. This rate was higher than the leaf mortality rate, which was 4.61 ± 1.27 leaves plant?1 year?1. Monthly leaf growth of the population was correlated with rainfall. Leaf expansion was fastest in the first month after emergence (1.31 ± 1.03 cm day?1). Fertility and leaf production intensity were not correlated with climate factors or seasonal variations. However, leaf mortality was negatively correlated with rainfall, causing variations in the number of leaves throughout the year. These results show that the phenological rhythms of D. truncatula were not equally influenced by climate variations. The phenology of D. truncatula corresponds to the phenology of a small number of aseasonal tropical ferns.  相似文献

The distribution and abundance of Ophiomyia camarae was determined in three ecological regions, i.e., highveld, middleveld, and lowveld of Swaziland. Within each region, sites were selected based on Lantana camara L. density, with 10 plants randomly chosen per sampling site. Ten leaves from each shrub were collected and assessed for any damage caused by the herringbone leaf-miner. Relative abundance, based on the number of shrubs damaged by the herringbone leaf-miner, was scored per site. Three lantana varieties were observed during the sampling period. There were significant differences in mean leaf damage due to leaf-miner activity between varieties (P=0.0162), with 46±4.89% leaves of the pale pink variety damaged compared to 23±5.56 and 21±3.53% leaves of the orange and pink varieties, respectively. While there were no restrictions in terms of distribution, the highest levels of O. camarae populations were observed in the middleveld (P=0.0012), suggesting that this region had the most suitable environmental conditions for this natural enemy. Overall, the abundance was significantly different between regions (P=0.006) and months (P=0.000), with April scoring the highest population levels. Based on our observations, the variation in environmental conditions has an influence on the activity of O. camarae, with the middleveld having the most suitable conditions  相似文献

Abstract: Radular teeth occur between the jaws in two specimens of the Late Cretaceous scaphitid ammonite Rhaeboceras halli (Meek and Hayden, 1856) from the Western Interior of the United States. The detailed morphology of the teeth has been revealed by propagation phase contrast X‐ray synchrotron microtomography. Each row of the radula of R. halli consists of a total of seven teeth (a central rachidian, two pairs of lateral and one pair of marginal teeth), as in other known ammonoid radulae, although the central tooth could not be confirmed in the specimens examined. The lateral teeth are multicuspid and robust, and the marginal teeth are long (4.6 mm) and slender. In overall morphology, the heterodont and ctenoglossan radula of R. halli is similar that of Jurassic and Cretaceous ammonites with the same aptychus‐type lower jaw, that is, the Aptychophora. This discovery reveals the range of variation in radular morphology, which could be related to ecological or phylogenetic factors. It also invalidates the hypothesis that the hook‐like structures in R. halli previously described are radular elements.  相似文献

A new species of Plagiomnium (Mniaceae), P. guizhouense Y.-J.Yi & S.He from Guizhou, China is described and illustrated. The new species is similar to P. affine in having spinosely serrate leaf margins with teeth consisting of up to 4 or more cells, a broadly elliptic leaf shape, and a decurrent leaf base, but is distinguished from the latter species by having a cuspidate leaf apex, broader marginal differentiation with borders consisting of 4–5 rows of linear, thick-walled cells, strongly ciliate marginal teeth that are sometimes branched and up to 7 cells long in upper fertile stem leaves and perichaetial leaves, and a much shorter leaf costa that ends just above mid-leaf in the lower leaves.  相似文献

Why the leaves of cold temperate deciduous and moisture-loving angiosperms are so often toothed has long puzzled biologists because the functional consequences of teeth remain poorly understood. Here we provide functional and structural evidence that marginal leaf teeth of Chloranthus japonicus, an understory herb, enable the release of guttation sap during root pressure. When guttation from teeth hydathodes was experimentally blocked, we found that the leaf intercellular airspaces became flooded. Measurements of chlorophyll a fluorescence revealed that internal flooding resulted in an inhibition of photosynthesis, most likely through the formation of a film of water within the leaf that reduced CO2 diffusion. Comparing a developmental series of leaves with and without teeth experimentally covered with wax, we found that teeth did not affect overall leaf stomatal conductance and CO2 uptake. However, maximal and effective light-saturation PSII quantum yields of teeth were found to be lower or equal to the surrounding lamina throughout leaf ontogeny. Collectively, our results suggest hydathodes and their development on teeth apices enable the avoidance of mesophyll flooding by root pressure. We discuss how these new findings bear on the potential physiological interpretations of models that apply leaf marginal traits to infer ancient climates.  相似文献

Objective Alpha hemoglobin-stabilizing protein (AHSP) inhibits the production of reactive oxygen species in various cells, including erythrocytes. Reduced AHSP can mean reduced protection from stressors. Our objective was to investigate whether AHSP is involved in the response to stress in pregnancy. Study design Placentas were collected from normal term pregnancies (n = 10) and pregnancies complicated by HELLP (n = 10), intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR; n = 10) or fetal death (IUFD; n = 6). AHSP messenger RNA (mRNA) and protein were determined using real time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Western blot, respectively. All statistical analyses were performed by using the GraphPad Prism Software. Differences were considered significant at p < 0.05. Results Placental AHSP mRNA level in HELLP (4.16E10−4 ± 1.77) and IUFD (4.19E10−4 ± 3.37) were significantly decreased compared with controls (28.47E10−4 ± 14.86; p < 0.01), whereas levels in the IUGR group (7.55E10−4 ± 6.4) showed a trend toward being lower but the difference did not reach statistical significance. Western blot analysis results indicate a no significant increase of ASHP protein in the HELLP syndrome group and a significant decrease in the IUFD group compared with controls. There was no significant difference between the IUGR and control groups. Conclusion ASHP mRNA expression in the placenta is decreased in complicated pregnancies, and it may be involved in the pathogenic mechanisms leading to the adverse pregnancy outcome. Genome size has been studied for the first time in the Colchicum genus. Values obtained by flow cytometry were quite stable and specific to each taxon: C. autumnale L., 2C=5.89±0.22 pg, equivalent to 5.7×10 bp (2 n=4 x=36); C. alpinum DC., 2C=8.06±0.24 pg, equivalent to 7.8×10 bp (2 n=6 x=56); C. lusitanum Brot., 2C=10.7±0.67 pg, equivalent to 10.3×10 bp (2 n= approx. 10 x=90–92 and 94–96); C. multiflorum Brot., 2C=16.5±0.69 pg, equivalent to 15.9×10 bp, (2 n= approx. 16 x=140–148); C. corsicum Baker, 2C=21.3±0.99 pg, equivalent to 20.6×10 bp (2 n=22 x= approx. 198±2). These values are well below those published for Liliaceae stricto sensu. In Colchicum species from the western Mediterranean area, genome size was highly correlated with ploidy level ( R 2=0.99, P<0.001). This relationship is consistent with most previous results, with our new chromosome number count for C. corsicum and with our correction of published erroneous counts for C. lusitanum (2 n=102–108). The Calabrian population appeared to be distinct from all of the other plants of the C. alpinum group. Reproducible and accurate, cytometry appears to be a particularly appropriate method for studying this polyploid genus in Western Europe, taking into account that chromosome numbers are difficult to enumerate. It can guide future taxonomic research because it reveals similarities or differences between taxa within this difficult complex.  相似文献

Synechococcus R-2 (PCC 1942) actively accumulates sulphate in the light and dark. Intracellular sulphate was 1.35 ± 0.23 mol m?3 (light) and 0.894 ± 0.152 mol m?3 (dark) under control conditions (BG-11 media: pHo, 7.5; [SO42?]o, 0.304 mol m?3). The sulphate transporter is different from that found in higher plants: it appears to be an ATP-driven pump transporting one SO42?/ATP [ΔμSO42?i,o=+ 27.7 ± 0.24 kJ mol?1 (light) and + 24 ± 0.34 kj mol?1 (dark)]. The rate of metabolism of SO42?at pHo, 7.5 was 150 ± 28 pmol m?2 s?1 (n = 185) in the light but only 12.8 ± 3.6 pmol m?2 s?1 (n = 61) in the dark. Light-driven sulphate uptake is partially inhibited by DCMU and chloramphenicol. Sulphate uptake is not linked to potassium, proton, sodium or chloride transport. The alga has a constitutive over-capacity for sulphate uptake [light (n= 105): Km= 0.3 ± 0.1 mmol m?3, Vmax, = 1.8 ± 0.6 nmol m?2 s?1; dark (n= 56): Km= 1.4 ± 0.4 mmol m?3, Vmax= 41 ± 22 pmol m?2 s?1]. Sulphite (SO32?) was a competitive inhibitor of sulphate uptake. Selenate (SeO42?) was an uncompetitive inhibitor.  相似文献

Open-flow oxygen and carbon dioxide respirometry was used in Neumünster Zoo (Germany) to examine the energy requirements of six Asian small-clawed otters (Amblonyx cinerea) at rest and swimming voluntarily under water. Our aim was to compare their energy requirements with those of other warm-blooded species to elucidate scale effects and to test whether the least aquatic of the three otter species differs markedly from these and its larger relatives. While at rest on land (16 °C, n = 26), otters (n = 6, mean body mass 3.1 ± 0.4 kg) had a respiratory quotient of 0.77 and a resting metabolic rate of 5.0 ± 0.8 Wkg−1(SD). This increased to 9.1 ± 0.8 Wkg−1 during rest in water (11–15 °C, n = 4) and to 17.6 ± 1.4 Wkg−1 during foraging and feeding activities in a channel (12 °C, n = 5). While swimming under water (n = 620 measurements) in an 11-m long channel, otters preferred a speed range between 0.7 ms−1 and 1.2 ms−1. Transport costs were minimal at 1 ms−1 and amounted to 1.47 ± 0.24 JN−1 m−1 (n = 213). Metabolic rates of small-clawed otters in air were similar to those of larger otter species, and about double those of terrestrial mammals of comparable size. In water, metabolic rates during rest and swimming were larger than those extrapolated from larger otter species and submerged swimming homeotherms. Carbon isotope ratios (13C/12C) were measured for the leaves of the seagrass Thalassia testudinum Banks ex König and carbonates of shells collected at the seagrass beds from seven sites along the coast of southern Florida, U.S.A. The δ13C values of seagrass leaves ranged from −7.3 to −16.3‰ among different study sites, with a significantly lower mean value for seagrass leaves from those sites near mangrove forests (−12.8 ± 1.1‰) than those far from mangrove forests (−8.3 ± 0.9‰; P < 0.05). Furthermore, seagrass leaves from a shallow water area had significantly lower δ13C values than those found in a deep water area (P < 0.01). There was no significant variation in δ13C values between young and mature leaves (P = 0.59) or between the tip and base of a leaf blade (P = 0.46). Carbonates of shells also showed a significantly lower mean δ13C value in the mangrove areas (−2.3 ± 0.6‰) than in the non-mangrove areas (0.6 ± 0.3‰; P <0.025). In addition, the δ13C values of seagrass leaves were significantly correlated with those of shell carbonates (δ13C seagrass leaf = −9.1 + 1.3δ13C shell carbonate (R2 = 0.83, P < 0.01)). These results indicated that the input of carbon dioxide from the mineralization of mangrove detritus caused the variation in carbon isotope ratios of seagrass leaves among different sites in this study.  相似文献

The sizes and compositions of bacterial populations found on leaves of greenhouse and field grown tomato plants were studied by dilution plating, fatty acid methyl ester analysis (FAME), and BIOLOG plates of isolates in pure cultures. In the greenhouse, overhead-irrigated plants sustained higher microbial populations (up to 105 cfu g−1) than soil-irrigated plants (103 cfu g−1). Strains isolated from overhead-irrigated plants grown in a vegetable garden (n=216) and from greenhouse-grown plants (n=114) were subjected to FAME analysis. Similarly, strains from soil-irrigated field-grown plants (n=83) were identified using BIOLOG plates. In each case, populations were dominated by a few genera. When concentrated phyllosphere washes (CPW) were sprayed on greenhouse-grown, soil-irrigated plants, leaf bacterial populations of more than 105 CFU g−1 were sustained for 4 days; sterile buffer-sprayed leaves sustained less than 104 CFU g−1. No significant enrichment of any strain isolated from the sprayed leaves could be detected by FAME identification of randomly selected colonies. However, when recurring leaf saprophytic species (both Gram-positive and Gram-negative) isolated from these experiments and from plants grown outdoors were tested for epiphytic colonization under stressful conditions, all could still be detected at various levels up to 4 days after inoculation, indicating differential epiphytic fitness. During summer 2011, samples of sediment, macrophytes, and fish tissues from the shallow, slightly alkaline Lake Neusiedl, Austria, were evaluated for their total Hg content. This is the first report of Hg levels from this lake. Sediments displayed Hg contents between 0.025 and 0.113 μg g?1 dw (dry weight), significantly correlating with the proportion of organic components pointing to a small anthropogenic impact on the lake's Hg content. Hg Levels in plants and fish were unexpectedly high: both investigated submerged plant species, Potamogeton pectinatus and Myriophyllum spicatum, showed mean values of 0.245±0.152 and 0.298±0.115 μg g?1 dw, respectively. Biomagnification was evident when comparing muscle samples of the planktivorous fish species rudd Scardinus erythrophthalmus (n=10, mean=0.084 μg g?1 ww (wet weight)) with the piscivorous perch Perca fluviatilis (n=21, mean=0.184 μg g?1 ww) or pike‐perch Sander lucioperca (n=9, mean=0.205 μg g?1 ww). Significantly lower values were found in the muscle of the piscivorous pike Esox lucius (n=25, mean=0.135 μg g?1 ww), pointing to a specific Hg metabolism of this fish, presumably under the particular physicochemical properties of the lake. Hg Concentrations in fish could pose a risk to piscivorous birds in this protected wetland system.  相似文献

Adult Helix aspersa snails were maintained individually forone week in plastic cages with 9 living Lupinus albus plantsas their only food. Among these 9 plants, 3 chemotypes bitter,intermediate and sweet which differed in their alkaloid contentwere equally represented. Each day, the leaf surface grazed and the number of leaves attackedby the snails were recorded for each chemotype and each snail.A consumption/ attack (C/A) ratio was calculated by dividing thesurface grazed (C) by the number of attacks (A). The numberof attacks and the grazed area were positively correlated foreach chemotype during the whole experiment, and the snails atesimilar quantities of lupin each day. After 4 and 6 days ofexperiment, we noticed a rejection of the bitter chemotype infavor of the intermediate and sweet ones respectively. Afterthe 6th day, the surface grazed per attack was significantlyhigher on the sweet chemotype than on the bitter plants. Wehypothesize that rejection of the bitter chemotype might berelated to (i) an alkaloids reaction threshold associated withan increase in the amount of alkaloids in the wounded plantsand/or (ii) aversive ingestive conditioning. AHSP inhibits cellular production of the reactive oxygen species. Reduced AHSP indicates reduced protection against oxidative stressors. Our objective was to investigate AHSP levels in recurrent miscarriage (RM). Trophoblast was collected from women of 10 weeks gestation: voluntary abortion controls (VA, n = 10); spontaneous first miscarriage with subsequent normal pregnancy (SMSN, n = 15) or with subsequent miscarriage (SMSM, n = 5); RM previously investigated (RMPS, n = 5) or not previously investigated (RM, n = 5). AHSP mRNA and protein were determined using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Western blot, respectively. One-way ANOVA was performed to assess statistical significance (p < 0.05). ahsp mRNA levels were maximally reduced in RM and RMPS (8.0 × 10−6 ± 1.3 and 8.1 × 10−6 ± 0.7, respectively) compared with SMSN and VA (16.1 × 10−6 ± 2.3 and 26.1 × 10−6 ± 2.7, respectively). SMSM showed levels significantly reduced as well (9.0 × 10−6 ± 2.3). In RM, a reduced defense from oxidative stressors is evident at first miscarriage, identifying women at high risk for subsequent eventful pregnancy. Freshwater crabs of the family Trichodactylidae are widely distributed in major river basins of the South American continent. The population structure of one species, Dilocarcinus pagei, was analyzed in an artificial reservoir in Southeastern Brazil, recording data on the sex ratio, recruitment, and mortality. A total of 1339 crabs were collected and included 804 males and 535 females (3 ovigerous and 4 with hatchlings); the sex ratio was 1:0.61 (males: females). Two modes of male and female carapace width (CW) were recorded, with means of 14.4 mm (n = 407) and 38.9 mm (n = 394) for males and 17.9 mm CW (n = 269) and 39.2 mm (n = 267) for females. The mean size of males (CW = 26.6 ± 13.8 mm) was significantly larger than that of females (CW = 28.5 ± 12.8 mm). The data indicated that recruitment occurs in summer (January–March), with the reproductive period in spring (October–December), periods with the highest rainfall and temperature values in the region. Reproduction leads to the death of the parents, influencing the sex ratio, which oscillates mainly during the reproductive period.  相似文献

Metal defence against insect herbivory in hyperaccumulator plants is well documented. However, there are contradictory results regarding protection against snails. According to the joint effects hypothesis, inorganic and organic defences cooperate in plant protection. To test this hypothesis, we explored the relationships between snail (Cantareus aspersus) feeding and multiple inorganic and organic leaf components in the Cd hyperaccumulator plant Noccaea praecox. Plants grouped by rosette size growing in nutrient solution supplemented or not with 50 μM Cd were offered to the snails. After 3 days of snail feeding, the plants and snails were analysed. In addition to Cd concentrations, we analysed leaves for nutritional factors (sugar and protein), defence‐related compounds (glucosinolates, phenolics, tannins, salicylic acid and jasmonate) and essential mineral nutrients. Cadmium concentrations in the snails and in snail excrements were also analysed. Snails preferentially fed on plants grown without Cd. Medium‐sized plants exposed to Cd were the least consumed. Snail excrements from this trial weighed less and had higher Cd concentrations than those from other treatments. Cadmium increased salicylate and jasmonate production. A positive relationship between jasmonate levels and the number of attacked leaves was found. Principal component analysis revealed that leaf sugar concentration was the main factor positively affecting snails' leaf consumption, while leaf Cd had a negative but weaker influence. In conclusion, leaf sugar concentration mainly governs snails' feeding preferences. High leaf Cd concentrations do not deter herbivores from attacking leaves, but they do reduce leaf consumption. Qualitative and quantitative measures of the Aufwuchs (scum flora) on artificial substrates in situ were used to evaluate the effects of grazing by freshwater pulmonate snails in a shallow pond in southeastern Michigan. Grazer densities of 216 snails/m2 marked reduced standing crop so that after 45 days grazed substrata had 6.46 mg dry weight, 604 µg C and 4.18 µg chlorophyll a as compared to controls with 30.62 mg dry weight, 3699 µg C and 6.29 µg chlorophyll a, all on a per dm2 basis.Grazing did not change carbon per mg dry matter but caused significant increases in both µg chlorophyll a (control, 0.206; and grazed, 0.649 µg chlorophyll a/mg dry weight, P < 0.01) and nitrogen (control, 8.3; and grazed, 24.2 µg N/mg dry weight, P < 0.001) after 45 days. Both abundance and diversity of the attached community was reduced by grazing from 24 taxa and 80,889 individuals/cm2 on control to 8 taxa and 501 individuals/cm2 on grazed substrates. Mean productivity of the Aufwuchs was significantly (P < 0.001) reduced by grazing from 76.3 µg C/(dm2·day) on control to 17.7 µg C/(dm2·day) on grazed substrata.Snails were very efficient at clearing smooth surfaces of living cells, detritus, and particulate inorganic matter. There was little evidence of selectivity except for an apparent inability to remove some of the smallest cells (e.g. Cocconeis sp.) probably for mechanical reasons.  相似文献

Smooth muscle cells isolated from the secondary and tertiary branches of the rabbit mesenteric artery contain large Ca2+-dependent channels. In excised patches with symmetrical (140 mm) K+ solutions, these channels had an average slope conductance of 235 ± 3 pS, and reversed in direction at −6.1 ± 0.4 mV. The channel showed K+ selectivity and its open probability (P o ) was voltage-dependent. Iberiotoxin (50 nm) reversibly decreased P o , whereas tetraethylammonium (TEA, at 1 mm) reduced the unitary current amplitude. Apamin (200 nm) had no effect. The channel displayed sublevels around 1/3 and 1/2 of the mainstate level. The effect of [Ca2+] on P o was studied and data fitted to Boltzmann relationships. In 0.1, 0.3, 1.0 and 10 μm Ca2+, V 1/2 was 77.1 ± 5.3 (n= 18), 71.2 ± 4.8 (n= 16), 47.3 ± 10.1 (n= 11) and −14.9 ± 10.1 mV (n= 6), respectively. Values of k obtained in 1 and 10 μm [Ca2+] were significantly larger than that observed in 0.1 μm [Ca2+]. With 30 μm NS 1619 (a BKCa channel activator), V 1/2 values were shifted by 39 mV to the left (hyperpolarizing direction) and k values were not affected. TEA applied intracellularly, reduced the unitary current amplitude with a K d of 59 mm. In summary, BKCa channels show a particularly weak sensitivity to intracellular TEA and they also display large variation in V 1/2 and k. These findings suggest the possibility that different types (isoforms) of BKCa channels may exist in this vascular tissue. Received: 22 December 1997/Revised: 27 March 1998  相似文献
