There was no difference in the direct toxicity of fluvalinate and esfenvalerate to twospotted spider mite (TSSM), Tetranychus urticae Koch. adults. The residual toxicity LC50 of esfenvalerate was lower. Neither pyrethroid was toxic (<10% mortality) to TSSM eggs or adults at their recommended field concentrations. Fluvalinate was twice as toxic (45% mortality) than esfenvalerate to TSSM larvae at 0.01 g.a.i L-1. The toxicity of the pyrethroids to TSSM protonymphs and deutonymphs was similar (16–28% mortality at 0.1 g a.i. L-1). Dispersal from the treated surface was the main response to both pyrethroids by TSSM protonymphs, deutonymphs and adults. Maximum run-off by TSSM adults from fluvalinate and esfenvalerate treated surfaces was found with 0.01 and 0.005 g a.i. L-1 respectively. Spin-down from pyrethroid treated surfaces was positively correlated with concentration. Oviposition was negatively correlated with concentration. Fluvalinate caused greater reductions in oviposition than esfenvalerate. Both pyrethroids reduced TSSM development rate from larval, protonymph and deutonymph stages, but fluvalinate caused larger reductions. Both pyrethroids prevented mating: for ten days oviposition 93% and 98% of offspring were male for esfenvalerate and fluvalinate respectively at 0.1 g a.i. L-1. These findings are discussed with respect to the incidence of pyrethroid induced mite outbreaks.  相似文献

Summary Seed from homozygous recessivems 1 genetic male-sterile soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) plants was studied for frequencies of polyembryonic seedlings and different levels of polyploidy among abnormal seedlings from six different source populations: Amesms 1 (Ams), North Carolinams 1 (NCms), Tonicams 1 (Tms), Urbanams 1 (Ums), and F4 generation seed obtained from crosses ofms 1 to two chromosome interchange lines (Ams x Clark T/T and Ums x KS-172-11-3). Frequencies of polyembryony observed in Tms, Ums, Ams, NCms, F4 seed from Ams x Clark T/T, and F4 seed from Ums x KS-172-11-3 were 3.6%, 2.4%, 3.1%, 2.5%, 2.2% and 0.1%, respectively. Frequencies of abnormal seedlings from these six sources varied from 1.7% (Ums X KS-172-11-3) to 16.8% (Ams X Clark T/T). Frequencies of polyploids among the abnormal seedlings ranged from 6.8% in Ums x Ks-172-11-3 to 66.7% in Tms. On average, the frequency of polyploid individuals from monoembryonic seedlings was 1.22%. Chromosome number of these seedlings varied from 20 to 200. Greenhouse and field experiments were conducted from 2005 to 2007 to determine the effectiveness of different release times with the predatory mite, Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor), for control of the twospotted spider mite (TSSM), Tetranychus urticae Koch, in strawberries (Fragaria x ananassa Duchesne). The effect of N. californicus releases over time and on development of TSSM populations during a growing season were evaluated. Our hypothesis was that repeated applications of N. californicus, which is currently recommended by biological control companies, might be unnecessary to attain season-long control of TSSM. In greenhouse trials, three treatments consisting of releases of N. californicus at five-day intervals: day 0, day 5, and day 10, and an untreated control were evaluated. The treatment releases significantly reduced TSSM below the control within five days of each release. Neoseiulus californicus significantly reduced TSSM in treatments with high densities (leaflets with ≥ 40 TSSM) below that of treatments with lower densities (leaflets with ≤ 10 TSSM) demonstrating that if released at a predator: prey ratio of 1:10, timing of release does not alter the effectiveness of N. californicus in controlling TSSM. However, we found that if the ratio of predator: prey remains adequate, N. californicus is a more efficient predator at high TSSM densities. Field studies included three treatments consisting of releases of N. californicus at one-month intervals. All treatments significantly reduced TSSM compared with the control plots (no releases). Releases applied early in the season sustained TSSM significantly below those in the control plots for the whole season. Our results indicate that one release of N. californicus is able to sustained control of TSSM in strawberry throughout a growing season if released when TSSM populations are low early in the season in the southeastern United States.  相似文献

Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) genotypes varying in area per nodal unit (usually a trifoliolate) and maturity class were grown in plots at the University of Illinois experimental farm. Leaf CO2-exchange rates per unit area (CER) were measured under sunlight on intact plants. In addition to previously reported correlations with specific leaf weight and chlorophyll, CER was positively correlated with ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBPcase) activity, specific activity, and soluble protein, and was negatively correlated with area per leaf unit. The CER: chlorophyll correlation was destroyed by high CER values in 2 chlorophyll-deficient lines. CER values for 27 of the 35 lines tested fell within the range of those for isolines of cultivar Clark varying in leaf characteristics. The CER values were highest for fully expanded leaves during rapid pod fill. These results suggested that photoperiod (maturity) genes and genes for leaf area growth interact with genes controlling photosynthetic CO2-exchange to produce the major differences in CER values among soybean genotypes.  相似文献

The predatory mite Phytoseiulus macropilis is a potential biological control agent of the two-spotted spider mite (TSSM) Tetranychus urticae on strawberry plants. Its ability to control TSSM was recently assessed under laboratory conditions, but its ability to locate and control TSSM under greenhouse conditions has not been tested so far. We evaluated whether P. macropilis is able to control TSSM on strawberry plants and to locate strawberry plants infested with TSSM under greenhouse conditions. Additionally, we tested, in an olfactometer, whether odours play a role in prey-finding by P. macropilis. The predatory mite P. macropilis required about 20 days to achive reduction of the TSSM population on strawberry plants initially infested with 100 TSSM females per plant. TSSM-infested plants attract an average of 27.5 ± 1.0% of the predators recaptured per plant and uninfested plants attracted only 5.8 ± 1.0% per plant. The predatory mites were able to suppress TSSM populations on a single strawberry plant and were able to use odours from TSSM-infested strawberry plants to locate prey in both olfactometer and arena experiments. Hence, it is concluded that P. macropilis can locate and reduce TSSM population on strawberry plants under greenhouse conditions.  相似文献

To develop a new control method for the two-spotted spider mite (TSSM), Tetranychus urticae, we investigated the effect of controlled atmospheres of carbon dioxide (CO2) on TSSM mortality under different concentrations and treatment periods, and evaluated the impact of treatments on seedlings of five host plants of TSSM. Egg hatching rate of TSSM was reduced to 37.7, 5.4 or 0% after 24 h treatment involving concentrations of 16.7, 33.3 or 50%, respectively. Mobile stages (nymphs and adult) of TSSM were completely controlled after 24 h treatment at concentrations higher than 33.3%. After 4 h at concentrations of 33.3 or 50%, 1st-day survival rate for all mobile stages was 45.3 or 36.0%, respectively, whereas after 8 or 16 h treatments, all values were decreased to zero. Seedlings of four major host plants of TSSM (cucumber, eggplant, rape, green peppers) were damaged to varying degrees after 24 h at the three concentrations, but strawberry, another host plant, was not damaged. Cucumber suffered the most serious damage, resulting in wilting and death. In conclusion, controlled atmospheres of CO2 can kill TSSM, particularly at high concentrations and with long treatment times. It can be used to control TSSM on strawberry, but should be used cautiously on other host plants.  相似文献

To examine trophic dynamics over different size classes, an isotopic study of sailfish Istiophorus platypterus life‐history stages was carried out. Samples were collected from eastern Taiwan and the South China Sea during April 2009 and February 2012. A total of 263 samples (111–245 cm, lower jaw fork length, LLJFL) were examined for changes in trophic structure in relation to LLJFL by using stable isotope analysis of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N). The δ15N values for I. platypterus ranged from 7·51 to 14·19‰ (mean ± s.d . = 12·06 ± 1·16‰) and the δ13C values ranged from ?22·04 to ?15·48‰ (mean ± s.d . = ?17·62 ± 1·10‰). The δ15N values were positively dependent on LLJFL (r2 = 0·377), whereas δ13C were negatively dependent on LLJFL (r2 = 0·063). There were significantly different seasonal changes in nitrogen and carbon isotopic concentration, but no significant differences in concentrations between eastern Taiwan and the South China Sea were reported. The trophic level (TL) of each LLJFL class was correlated, starting from 2·84 TL for size class I (LLJFL < 140 cm) and reaching 5·03 TL for size class VI (LLJFL > 221 cm). The mean ± s.d . TL was 4·43 ± 0·19 for all samples. The results reveal that I. platypterus occupies a wide range of trophic levels and different size classes occupy different trophic positions in the pelagic ecosystem.  相似文献

L-Ascorbyl oleate and L-ascorbyl linoleate were synthesized by an immobilized lipase from Candida antarctica with yields of 38% and 44%, respectively. L-Ascorbyl oleate was stable in sterile culture medium over 12 h at 37 °C but L-ascorbyl linoleate degraded by 17%. Predation by naturally occurring predatory arthropods was investigated to explain variations in population numbers of twospotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae Koch) between first and second season strawberry crops. Araneomorph spiders. European harvestman [Phalangium opilio (L.)], Tasmanian lacewing [Micromus tasmaniae (Walker)] and Pacific damsel bug [Nabis kinbergii Reuter] were the only predators found in high numbers. However, spiders and harvestment were more prevalent than lacewings and nabids. Laboratory feedings trials indicated spiders build horizontal webs in the plants and prey predominantly on small flying insects that shelter in the crops. Similar feeding trials cofirmed the palatability of TSSM to spiders and harvestmen. Immunological testing for proteins of TSSM, aphids, Collembola and leafrollers in the intestines of field collected European harvestman, spiders, Tasmanian lacewing and Pacific damsel bug confirmed European harvestman includes TSSM in its diet, but not in large enough quantities to exert a significant regulating pressure on TSSM populations. Lacewings and nabids include TSSM in their diets but only in very small quantities (2% and 1% respectively). Spiders do not take TSSM unless they drop or spin down onto the spider webbing. The immunological testing also showed European harvestman to be a polyphagous and opportunistic feeder. Prey residues were detected more frequently in harvestmen intestines at times of prey abundance which indicated a seasonality to harvestmen diet.   相似文献

The variation in nucleotide sequence observed in the envelope (E) gene and the prM (precursor of M protein) region of different strains of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) was analysed. Presence of selective forces acting on these regions was investigated by computing the relative rates of synonymous (K s) and nonsynonymous (K a) substitutions. The ratioK s/K a was used as an indicator of the overall selective constraints on the amino acid sequence of JEV proteins. The possibility that different regions of the gene may be subject to varying selective pressures was tested by dividing the gene into three regions and estimating theK s/K a ratio for each region. On the basis of analysis of a limited number (17) of strains of JEV, evidence suggestive of positive selection acting on certain regions of the E gene of the virus, and in some cases on the entire gene, was obtained. Analysis ofK a diversity in the prM region of 46 JEV strains grouped into three genotypes revealed that strains included in genotype II were more heterogeneous than strains belonging to genotype I, while the differences between meanK a values for genotypes I and III and genotypes II and III were not statistically significant. Analysis of host-specific heterogeneity in the prM region revealed that pig isolates were more Xa-diverse than human isolates.  相似文献

Photosynthesis and photoinhibition in two xerophytic shrubs during drought   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Seasonal changes in water relations, net photosynthetic rate (P N), and fluorescence of chlorophyll (Chl) a of two perennial C3 deciduous shrubs, Ipomoea carnea and Jatropha gossypifolia, growing in a thorn scrub in Venezuela were studied in order to establish the possible occurrence of photoinhibition during dry season and determine whether changes in photochemical activity of photosystem 2 (PS2) may explain variations of P N in these species. Leaf water potential () decreased from –0.2 to –2.1 MPa during drought in both species. The P N decreased with in I. carnea and J. gossypifolia by 64 and 74 %, respectively. Carboxylation efficiency (CE) decreased by more than 50 and 70 % in I. carnea and J. gossypifolia, respectively. In I. carnea, relative stomatal limitation (Ls) increased by 17 % and mesophyll limitation (Lm) by 65 % during drought, while in J. gossypifolia Ls decreased by 27 % and Lm increased by 51 %. Drought caused a reduction in quantum yield of PS2 (PS2) in both species. Drought affected the capacity of energy dissipation of leaves, judging from the changes in the photochemical (qP) and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) coefficients. Photoinhibition during drought in I. carnea and J. gossypifolia was evidenced in the field by a drop in the maximum quantum yield of PS2 (Fv/Fm) below 0.8 and also by non-coordinated changes in PS2 and quantum yield of non-photochemical excitation quenching (Yn). Total soluble protein content on an area basis increased with but the ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase content remained unchanged. A reduction of total Chl content with drought was observed. Hence in the species studied photoinhibition occurred, which imposed an important limitation on carbon assimilation during drought.  相似文献

Spinosad is a bioinsecticide with a high degree of selective toxicity towards insects of different orders, but its toxicity towards the two-spotted spider mite (TSSM), Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) is under debate. In this study, we compared the acaricidal properties of spinosad with the commercial bioacaricide abamectin on the life stages of TSSM. Adulticide and ovicide bioassays were performed on a susceptible laboratory strain using direct spraying of leaf disks with five rates of spinosad (20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 mg/l), five rates of abamectin (0.125, 0.25, 0.5, 1 and 2.5 mg/l), sublethal concentrations or a combination of spinosad and abamectin. Both adulticidal and ovicidal effects of spinosad against T. urticae in the laboratory were apparent, based on morality rates of the adults, reduction of female fecundity and death of offspring. Abamectin was also found to significantly reduce female fecundity and killed offspring when applied directly on the eggs. Interestingly, sublethal concentrations of spinosad reduced female fecundity stronger than abamectin. When a mixture of spinosad and abamectin was applied at LC50, mortality was 74%, fecundity reduction was comparable to abamectin alone and egg hatching rate was lower than by either compound alone. In conclusion, spinosad was more harmful than abamectin for TSSM life stages and the combined application is recommended.  相似文献

First estimates of sex allocation patterns and body size‐at‐sexual maturity and at protogynous sex change are presented for the five major (including one endemic) species of parrotfishes of Hawaii. Median body size at initial maturation as a female (LM50) and at protogynous sex change from adult female to adult male (LΔ50) varied greatly among the five species. Estimates of LM50 were about 14, 17, 24, 34 and 35 cm fork length (LF) in palenose Scarus psittacus, Pacific bullethead Chlorurus spilurus, stareye Calotomus carolinus, spectacled Chlorurus perspicillatus and redlip parrotfish Scarus rubroviolaceus. Values of LΔ50 were c. 23, 27, 37, 46 and 47 cm LF in the respective species. Length at female maturation was proportional to maximum body size (Lmax) of the respective species, ranging from 50 to 72% and averaging 62% of Lmax across species. LΔ50 was also proportional to Lmax, ranging from 82 to 97% and averaging 92%. Males of both pairs of Scarus and Chlorurus spp. reported here are diandric. Only one of the five major species (C. carolinus) is functionally monandric, with either all or nearly all males secondarily derived from adult females. The broadly differing absolute body sizes at sexual maturation and at sex change among the five species have important implications for improving regulatory size limits for parrotfishes in the State of Hawaii, where parrotfish species have historically been managed based on a single minimum size limit of 30·5 cm LF. This study provides a model demonstration of why catch data for parrotfishes, and other size‐structured reef‐fish populations, should be recorded either by species or by functional size‐groups of species that allow setting more meaningful minimum size limits.  相似文献

Differences between two maize and two triticale genotypes grown in low soil compaction (LSC), moderate soil compaction (MSC) and severe soil compaction (SSC) and with a limited (D) or excess (W) soil water content were observed as a decrease in shoot (S) and root (R) biomass, leaf greening (SPAD) and increase in membrane injury (LI), root and leaf water potential (ψ), photosynthesis (Pn), transpiration (E) and stomata conductance (gS). Close correlations between ψL and ψR, and between differences ψL and ψRψ) were found. Drought or waterlogging with LSC conditions in both maize genotypes resulted in higher WUE than in control plants (LSC C), but under the SSC WUE declined. However, for triticale differences in WUE, between treatments were small and insignificant. In general, changes in markers were greater for genotypes sensitive to the soil compaction (Ankora, CHD-12) than in resistant ones (Tina, CHD-247) and were higher in seedlings grown under SSC conditions.

A bovine serum albumin-bovine hemoglobin conjugate was prepared using 3-maleimidobenzoic acid N-hydroxysuccinimide ester as cross-linker. The conjugate was purified using DEAE Sepharose. Effect of salinity on phosphate accumulation and injury in soybean   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Many soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] genotypes that are grown in solution cultures are highly sensitive to the combination of both salinity and inorganic phosphate (Pi) in the substrate. This effect has been observed on numerous occasions on plants grown in a saline medium that contained a substantial amount of Ca (i.e., CaCl2/NaCl=0.5 on a molar basis). Because Ca is important in regulating ion transport and membrane permeability, solution culture experiments were designed to examine the effects of various concentrations of Pi and ratios of CaCl2/NaCl (0 to 0.5 on a molar basis) at a constant osmotic potential (−0.34 MPa) on this adverse interaction. Four soybean cultivars (‘Lee’, ‘Lee 74’ ‘Clark’ and ‘Clark 63’) were tested. No adverse salinity x Pi interaction was found on Lee at any ratio and leaf P and Cl were maintained below 300 and 200 mmol kg−1 dry wt, respectively. Clark, Clark 63 and Lee 74 soybean plants, on the other hand, were severely injured by solution salinity (−0.34 MPa osmotic potential) when substrate Pi was ≥0.12 mM. Reduced substrate Ca did not intensify the salinity x Pi interaction. On the contrary, the onset of injury was hastened and more severe with increased CaCl2/NaCl ratios in isotonic solutions. Shoot and root growth rates decreased as injury increased. Leaf P concentrations from these cultivars grown in saline solutions with 0.12 mM Pi were excessive (>600 mmol kg−1 dry wt) compared with concentrations commonly found in soybean leaf tissue yet they were independent of the severity of injury. Since leaf Cl increased wiht increased CaCl2/NaCl ratio, we suspect that the severity of foliar injury was related to the combined effects of excessive P and Cl within the tissue. Lee 74, the only injured cultivar examined that excluded Cl from its leaves, was less sensitive than either Clark cultivar and its injury was characteristically different. Other ion interactions were reported that may have played a role in injury susceptibility.  相似文献

Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of PCR-amplified 16S rDNA fragments was used to explore the genetic diversity of hydrothermal vent microbial communities, specifically to determine the importance of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria therein. DGGE analysis of two different hydrothermal vent samples revealed one PCR band for one sample and three PCR bands for the other sample, which probably correspond to the dominant bacterial populations in these communities. Three of the four 16S rDNA fragments were sequenced. By comparison with 16S rRNA sequences of the Ribosomal Database Project, two of the DGGE-separated fragments were assigned to the genusThiomicrospira. To identify these ‘phylotypes’ in more detail, a phylogenetic framework was created by determining the nearly complete 16S rRNA gene sequence (approx. 1500 nucleotides) from three describedThiomicrospira species, viz.,Tms. crunogena, Tms. pelophila, Tms. denitrificans, and from a new isolate,Thiomicrospira sp. strain MA2-6. AllThiomicrospira species exceptTms. denitrificans formed a monophyletic group within the gamma subdivision of the Proteobacteria.Tms. denitrificans was assigned as a member of the epsilon subdivision and was distantly affiliated withThiovulum, another sulfur-oxidizing bacterium. Sequences of two dominant 16S rDNA fragments obtained by DGGE analysis fell into the gamma subdivisionThiomicrospira. The sequence of one fragment was in all comparable positions identical to the 16S rRNA sequence ofTms. crunogena. Identifying a dominant molecular isolate asTms. crunogena indicates that this species is a dominant community member of hydrothermal vent sites. Another ‘phylotype’ represented a newThiomicrospira species, phylogenetically in an intermediate position betweenTms. crunogena andTms. pelophila. The third ‘phylotype’ was identified as aDesulfovibrio, indicating that sulfate-reducing bacteria, as sources of sulfide, may complement sulfur- and sulfide-oxidizing bacteria ecologically in these sulfide-producing hydrothermal vents.  相似文献

Orange roughy Hoplostethus atlanticus juveniles <24 cm fork length (LF) (10–17 years old) were recorded for the first time in Chile, when 10 specimens were collected on the continental slope and seamount JF2 in Juan Fernandez Archipelago. Physiological basis of QTLs for boron efficiency in Arabidopsis thaliana   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Boron (B) is an essential micronutrient for higher plants, but the adaptability of plants to B deficiency varies widely both between and within species. On the basis of quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis of the B efficiency coefficient (BEC) detected in an Arabidopsis thaliana Ler × Col recombinant inbred (RI) population, B efficiency was evaluated in the original parents (Ler and Col-4) and two F8 lines (1938 and 1961), both of which were selected on the basis of phenotype and genotype of the RI population. The parent Ler and F8 progeny 1938 had higher BEC and B utilization efficiency (BUE) values than those calculated for parent Col-4 and F8 progeny 1961, respectively, when grown in nutrient solutions containing three different concentrations of B. The magnitude of the BEC and BUE-values was correlated closely with the combined phenotypic effect of the corresponding QTLs among the four genotypes. The F8 line, 1938, inherited all four B-efficient QTLs, AtBE1-1, AtBE1-2, AtBE2 and AtBE5, from its two original parents. The four QTLs accounted for 65.2% of the total variation in BEC and 1938 showed the highest BEC (0.74) and BUE (10.5) values among the four genotypes when grown in nutrient solution that contained 0.324 μM B. Only one minor-effect QTL (AtBE1-1) was found in the parent, Col-4. This QTL accounted only for 8.8% of total BEC variation and resulted in the lowest BEC (0.39) and BUE (0.76) in Col-4 when it was grown in nutrient solution that contained 0.324 μM B. Phenotypic profile analysis showed that 1938 not only inherited the B utilization and distribution characteristics found in the silique of Ler, but also acquired the low-B requirement for root and shoot growth from Col-4. As a result, this genotype displayed the strongest tolerance to B deficiency. In addition, both B-efficient genotypes, 1938 and Ler, possessed the QTL (AtBE1-2) and both plants had high-seed yields and high-B distributions in their siliques. Therefore, we hypothesize that QTL AtBE1-2 plays a role in the utilization and/or the distribution of B to the silique when plants suffer from B deficiency. The diet of the alfonsino Beryx splendens was determined from examination of stomach contents of 287 specimens of 17 to 48 cm fork length (LF) sampled by bottom trawl on the Chatham Rise to the east of New Zealand. Prey items were predominantly crustaceans and mesopelagic fishes. The most important prey species by mass was Sergestes spp. prawns, followed by the myctophid Lampanyctodes hectoris, and then Pasiphaea spp. prawns. Multivariate analyses indicated that small crustaceans (euphausiids and amphipods) were most important in the diet of smaller B. splendens (100–424 g, 17–26·5 cm), with larger prawn species and mesopelagic fishes most important for larger fish (425–2070 g, 27–46 cm). Moon phase and bottom temperature also explained some of the variability in diet, but the moon phase effect was difficult to explain, and the bottom temperature effect may have been confounded, to some extent, with LF. The results indicated that B. splendens were moderately selective feeders that foraged primarily in the mesopelagic layers. The diet of New Zealand B. splendens is generally similar to those reported from other areas, i.e. dominated by mesopelagic crustaceans and fishes, and with a transition from small crustaceans to fishes with increasing predator size.  相似文献
