Recent work exploring the effects of physical stress and herbivory on secondary succession in estuarine plant communities agrees with basic stress models and reveal that herbivory is an important force in brackish and oligohaline marshes but negligible in physically stressful salt marshes. In these systems, herbivores are terrestrial, and thus negatively affected by the same stressful factors that affect marsh plants (i.e. frequent flooding or high salinities). We evaluated the effects of a marine herbivore (i.e. the crab Neohelice granulata) on plant secondary succession in a southwestern Atlantic salt marsh. Field surveys revealed that disturbance‐generated bare patches have harsh physical conditions and that their edges suffer higher herbivore pressure compared to the marsh matrix. A factorial experiment demonstrated that asexual expansion of the surrounding plants is the only possible mechanism to re‐colonize disturbed patches and that crab exclusion can increase this colonization rate by more than 30 times. Our results show that even in highly stressful environments, herbivores strongly impact marsh structure by regulating patch recovery. The synergism of physical stress and herbivory may make plant succession an extremely slow process and lead to the prevalence of bare areas.  相似文献

Traditionally, salt marsh ecosystems were thought to be controlled exclusively by bottom–up processes. Recently, this paradigm has shifted to include top–down control as an additional primary factor regulating salt‐marsh community structure. The most recent research on consumer impacts in southern US marshes has shown that top–down forces often interact with biotic and abiotic factors, such as secondary fungal infection in grazer‐induced wounds, soil nutrients and climatic variation, to influence ecosystem structure. In a more northern salt marsh, located in New England, we examined the separate and interactive effects of nutrient availability, insect herbivory and secondary fungal infection, on growth of the foundation species, Spartina alterniflora. We used a factorial design with two levels of nutrients (control and addition) insects (control and removal) and fungi (control and removal). Nutrient addition increased plant biomass by 131% in the absence of herbivores. When insect consumers were allowed access to fertilized plots, biomass was reduced by nearly 45% when compared with treatments with nutrients and insecticide. In contrast, insect herbivores did not affect plant biomass in unfertilized control treatments. These differences suggest that consumer effects are triggered under high nutrient levels only. We also found that secondary fungal infections in grazer‐induced wounds, in contrast to lower latitude marshes, did not significantly impact primary production. Our results suggest that while New England salt marshes may typically be under bottom–up control, eutrophication can trigger dual control with inclusion of top–down regulation. However, unlike lower latitude marshes, consumer control of plant growth in northern US salt marshes is not dependent on herbivores facilitating fungal infections that then control grass growth, suggesting that the intensity of disease mediated top–down control by small grazers may be regulated by climate and/or grazer identity that co‐vary with latitude.  相似文献

Surface fires burn extensive areas of tropical forests each year, altering resource availability, biotic interactions, and, ultimately, plant diversity. In transitional forest between the Brazilian cerrado (savanna) and high stature Amazon forest, we took advantage of a long-term fire experiment to establish a factorial study of the interactions between fire, nutrient availability, and herbivory on early plant regeneration. Overall, five annual burns reduced the number and diversity of regenerating stems. Community composition changed substantially after repeated fires, and species common in the cerrado became more abundant. The number of recruits and their diversity were reduced in the burned area, but burned plots closed to herbivores with nitrogen additions had a 14 % increase in recruitment. Diversity of recruits also increased up to 50 % in burned plots when nitrogen was added. Phosphorus additions were related to an increase in species evenness in burned plots open to herbivores. Herbivory reduced seedling survival overall and increased diversity in burned plots when nutrients were added. This last result supports our hypothesis that positive relationships between herbivore presence and diversity would be strongest in treatments that favor herbivory—in this case herbivory was higher in burned plots which were initially lower in diversity. Regenerating seedlings in less diverse plots were likely more apparent to herbivores, enabling increased herbivory and a stronger signal of negative density dependence. In contrast, herbivores generally decreased diversity in more species rich unburned plots. Although this study documents complex interactions between repeated burns, nutrients, and herbivory, it is clear that fire initiates a shift in the factors that are most important in determining the diversity and number of recruits. This change may have long-lasting effects as the forest progresses through succession.  相似文献

Increasing evidence has shown that nutrients and consumers interact to control primary productivity in natural systems, but how abiotic stress affects this interaction is unclear. Moreover, while herbivores can strongly impact zonation patterns in a variety of systems, there are few examples of this in salt marshes. We evaluated the effect of nutrients and herbivores on the productivity and distribution of the cordgrass Spartina densiflora along an intertidal stress gradient, in a Southwestern Atlantic salt marsh. We characterized abiotic stresses (salinity, ammonium concentration, and anoxia) and manipulated nutrients and the presence of the herbivorous crab Neohelice (Chasmagnathus) granulata, at different tidal heights with a factorial experiment. Abiotic stress increased at both ends of the tidal gradient. Salinity and anoxia were highest at the upper and lower edge of the intertidal, respectively. Nutrients and herbivory interacted to control cordgrass biomass, but their relative importance varied with environmental context. Herbivory increased at lower tidal heights to the point that cordgrass transplants onto bare mud substrate were entirely consumed unless crabs were excluded, while nutrients were most important where abiotic stress was reduced. Our results show how the impact of herbivores and nutrients on plant productivity can be dependent on environmental conditions and that the lower intertidal limits of marsh plants can be controlled by herbivory.  相似文献

In different ecosystems herbivores highly prefer particular plant species. This is often explained in a stoichiometric framework of nutrient‐based plant adaptations to herbivory. We hypothesize that such super‐palatability can also arise as an evolutionary by‐product of osmoregulatory adaptations of plants to stressful environmental conditions, as salinity, drought and cold. Here, we investigate in a coastal salt marsh why some plant species are highly preferred by migratory brent geese Branta bernicla bernicla in spring while others are avoided. This salt marsh is an important spring staging site for the geese. Sufficient energy storage in a short period is critical to enable their northward migration to Siberia and subsequent reproduction. We test if geese prefer plants that balance their internal osmotic potential with the saline environment through energy‐rich soluble sugars over plant species that use (compartmentalized) salts for this. We find that plant nitrogen and acid detergent fiber content, classic predictors of herbivore preferences, poorly explain which plants the geese prefer. Instead, plant species that are highly preferred by the geese adapt to salinity by high soluble sugar concentrations while avoided species do this by high plant salt concentrations. Thus, the type of osmoregulatory adaptation to stress displayed by different plant species is a good predictor for the food preference of geese on this salt marsh. We suggest that variation in other types of osmoregulation‐based stress adaptations, as plant cold adaptations in tundras and plant drought adaptations in savannas, have similar important consequences for trophic interactions.  相似文献

Disturbance can generate heterogeneous environments and profoundly influence plant diversity by creating patches at different successional stages. Herbivores, in turn, can govern plant succession dynamics by determining the rate of species replacement, ultimately affecting plant community structure. In a south-western Atlantic salt marsh, we experimentally evaluated the role of herbivory in the recovery following disturbance of the plant community and assessed whether herbivory affects the relative importance of sexual and clonal reproduction on these dynamics. Our results show that herbivory strongly affects salt marsh secondary succession by suppressing seedlings and limiting clonal colonization of the dominant marsh grass, allowing subordinate species to dominate disturbed patches. These results demonstrate that herbivores can have an important role in salt marsh community structure and function, and can be a key force during succession dynamics.  相似文献

Herbivores in nutrient‐limited systems such as arctic tundra have been suggested to play a minor role in controlling plant growth simply because they are relatively few in number. However, theory predicts that as net primary productivity (NPP) increases because of greater inputs of nutrients or energy, herbivores may have greater effects on plant growth. This prediction has not been tested in the context of climate warming in arctic tundra, which may increase soil nutrient availability and thus NPP. We examined a long‐term experiment that excluded small and large mammalian herbivores and increased soil nutrients in two arctic Alaskan tundra communities: dry heath (DH) and moist acidic tussock (MAT). In the ninth year of manipulations, we measured weekly growth of three plant species of three growth forms: tussock‐forming graminoid, rhizomatous graminoid, and dwarf deciduous shrub, in each community. All species grew better when fertilized. In DH, this increase in growth was exaggerated when plants were protected from herbivores, confirming that herbivory had a negative effect on plant growth under increased nutrient conditions, but was unimportant under ambient soil conditions. However, in MAT, the importance of herbivory differed among species with fertilization. The tussock‐forming sedge at MAT, Eriophorum vaginatum, grew better and flowered more when fenced under both ambient and amended nutrients compared to plants exposed to herbivores. This species decreases in abundance in long‐term fertilized plots when mammals are present, and our results suggest that herbivory may be accounting for at least some of that loss, in addition to shifts in competitive relationships. Although we only focused on individual plants here rather than the entire community, our results suggest that under the increased soil nutrient conditions expected with continued climate warming in the Arctic, herbivores may become more important in affecting several abundant tundra plant populations, and should not be ignored.  相似文献

Herbivore damage and impact on plants often varies spatially across environmental gradients. Although such variation has been hypothesized to influence plant distribution, few quantitative evaluations exist. In this study I evaluated patterns of insect herbivory on an annual forb, Atriplex patula var. hastata, across a salt marsh tidal gradient, and performed experiments to examine potential causes and consequences of variation in herbivory. Damage to plants was generally twice as great at mid-tidal elevations, which are more frequently inundated, than at higher, less stressful, elevations at five of six surveyed sites. Field herbivore assays and herbivore preference experiments eliminated the hypothesis that plant damage was mediated by herbivore response to differences in host plants across the gradient. Alternately, greater herbivore densities in the mid-marsh, where densities of an alternate host plant (Salicornia europaea) were high, were associated with greater levels of herbivory on Atriplex, suggesting spillover effects. The effect of insect herbivores on host plant performance varied between the two sites studied more intensively. Where overall herbivore damage to plants was low, herbivory had no detectable effect on plant survival or seed production, and plant performance did not significantly differ between zones. However, where herbivore damage was high, herbivores dramatically reduced both plant survival (>50%) and fruit production (40-70%), and their effects were stronger in the harsher mid-marsh than the high marsh. Thus herbivores likely play a role in maintaining lower Atriplex densities in mid-marsh. Overall, these results suggest that variation in herbivore pressure can be an important determinant of patterns of plant abundance across environmental gradients.  相似文献

Eastern European grasslands are still inhabited by a rich arthropod fauna, but the drivers and mechanisms influencing their communities have to be understood to ensure their future survival. Heteroptera communities were studied in 20 plot-pairs in Pannonic salt steppe–salt marsh mosaics in Hungary. The effects of vegetation characteristics, landscape diversity and the proportion of surrounding grasslands on the composition, species richness and abundance of different feeding groups of true bugs (carnivores, specialist and generalist herbivores) were examined using ordinations and mixed-effect models. We found distinct herbivorous assemblages corresponding to microtopography-driven differences in water regime and vegetation between steppe and marsh plots, but this pattern was less pronounced in carnivorous assemblages. A higher species richness of true bugs was found in the more diverse steppe vegetation than in the salt marsh vegetation, while the abundance pattern of true bugs was opposite. Landscape diversity had a positive effect on the species richness and abundance of generalist herbivores and carnivores. Our results suggested that generalist herbivores and carnivores appear to drive diversity patterns in the local landscape due to their high dispersal abilities and the broader range of resources they can utilize. Specialist herbivores strongly influence the local insect biomass in relation to the distribution and density of their host plants. The present study highlights the importance of both habitat and landscape diversity for local insect diversity in Pannonic salt grasslands and suggests that the main threats for arthropod diversity are those processes and activities that homogenize these areas.  相似文献

Abstract Fire and herbivory are known to modify plant community structure. Many studies have suggested that fire ashes may increase soil nutrients in dystrophic soils. Herbivores may also change plant community structure through direct effects of herbivory and affecting nutrient cycling. Leaf‐cutting ants were traditionally viewed as herbivores, although their role may be more complex, because their nests affect both chemical and physical soil properties, thus affecting plants indirectly. We investigated the effects of frequent burning and of leaf‐cutting ants on the nutrient status of an herbaceous and a shrub species occurring in the Brazilian Cerrado, a habitat that is characterized by natural burnings. The proximity of ant nests resulted in an increase of nutrients in the leaves of both vegetation strata, whereas burning sometimes resulted in a decrease of nutrients. Our results do not lead to a possible positive effect of fire on plant nutrient content. On the other hand, ant nests may represent an important source of nutrients for plants on the nutrient‐depleted Cerrado soils and may accelerate vegetation recovery after burning.  相似文献

Herbivores induce plants to undergo diverse processes that minimize costs to the plant, such as producing defences to deter herbivory or reallocating limited resources to inaccessible portions of the plant. Yet most plant tissue is consumed by decomposers, not herbivores, and these defensive processes aimed to deter herbivores may alter plant tissue even after detachment from the plant. All consumers value nutrients, but plants also require these nutrients for primary functions and defensive processes. We experimentally simulated herbivory with and without nutrient additions on red alder (Alnus rubra), which supplies the majority of leaf litter for many rivers in western North America. Simulated herbivory induced a defence response with cascading effects: terrestrial herbivores and aquatic decomposers fed less on leaves from stressed trees. This effect was context dependent: leaves from fertilized-only trees decomposed most rapidly while leaves from fertilized trees receiving the herbivory treatment decomposed least, suggesting plants funnelled a nutritionally valuable resource into enhanced defence. One component of the defence response was a decrease in leaf nitrogen leading to elevated carbon : nitrogen. Aquatic decomposers prefer leaves naturally low in C : N and this altered nutrient profile largely explains the lower rate of aquatic decomposition. Furthermore, terrestrial soil decomposers were unaffected by either treatment but did show a preference for local and nitrogen-rich leaves. Our study illustrates the ecological implications of terrestrial herbivory and these findings demonstrate that the effects of selection caused by terrestrial herbivory in one ecosystem can indirectly shape the structure of other ecosystems through ecological fluxes across boundaries.  相似文献

Although plant–animal interactions like pollination and herbivory are obviously interdependent, ecological investigations focus mainly on one kind of interaction ignoring the possible significance of the others. Plants with flowers offer an extraordinary possibility to study such mutualistic and antagonistic interactions since it is possible to measure changes in floral traits and fitness components in response to different organisms or combinations of them. In a three factorial common garden experiment we investigated single and combined effects of root herbivores, leaf herbivores and decomposers on flowering traits and plant fitness of Sinapis arvensis. Leaf herbivory negatively affected flowering traits indicating that it could significantly affect plant attractiveness to pollinators. Decomposers increased total plant biomass and seed mass indicating that plants use the nutrients liberated by decomposers to increase seed production. We suggest that S. arvensis faced no strong selection pressure from pollen limitation, for two reasons. First, reduced nutrient availability through leaf herbivory affected primarily floral traits that could be important for pollinator attraction. Second, improved nutrient supply through decomposer activity was invested in seed production and not in floral traits. This study indicates the importance of considering multiple plant–animal interactions simultaneously to understand selection pressures underlying plant traits and fitness.  相似文献

The response of semiarid grasslands to small, non‐colonial herbivores has received little attention, focusing primarily on the effects of granivore assemblages on annual plant communities. We studied the long‐term effects of both small and large herbivores on vegetation structure and species diversity of shortgrass steppe, a perennial semiarid grassland considered marginal habitat for small mammalian herbivores. We hypothesized that 1) large generalist herbivores would affect more abundant species and proportions of litter‐bare ground‐vegetation cover through non‐selective herbivory, 2) small herbivores would affect less common species through selective but limited consumption, and 3) herbivore effects on plant richness would increase with increasing aboveground net primary production (ANPP). Plant community composition was assessed over a 14‐year period in pastures grazed at moderate intensities by cattle and in exclosures for large (cattle) and large‐plus‐small herbivores (additional exclusion of rabbits and rodents). Exclusion of large herbivores affected litter and bare ground and basal cover of abundant, common and uncommon species. Additional exclusion of small herbivores did not affect uncommon components of the plant community, but had indirect effects on abundant species, decreased the cover of the dominant grass Bouteloua gracilis and total vegetation, and increased litter and species diversity. There was no relationship between ANPP and the intensity of effects of either herbivore body size on richness. Exclusion of herbivores of both body sizes had complementary and additive effects which promoted changes in vegetation composition and physiognomy that were linked to increased abundance of tall and decreased abundance of short species. Our findings show that small mammalian herbivores had disproportionately large effects on plant communities relative to their small consumption of biomass. Even in small‐seeded perennial grasslands with a long history of intensive grazing by large herbivores, non‐colonial small mammalian herbivores should be recognized as an important driver of grassland structure and diversity.  相似文献

Flooding and salinity stress are predicted to increase in coastal Louisiana as relative sea level rise (RSLR) continues in the Gulf of Mexico region. Although wetland plant species are adapted to these stressors, questions persist as to how marshes may respond to changed abiotic variables caused by RSLR, and how herbivory by native and non-native mammals may affect this response. The effects of altered flooding and salinity on coastal marsh communities were examined in two field experiments that simultaneously manipulated herbivore pressure. Marsh sods subjected to increased or decreased flooding (by lowering or raising sods, respectively), and increased or decreased salinity (by reciprocally transplanting sods between a brackish and fresh marsh), were monitored inside and outside mammalian herbivore exclosures for three growing seasons. Increased flooding stress reduced species numbers and biomass; alleviating flooding stress did not significantly alter species numbers while community biomass increased. Increased salinity reduced species numbers and biomass, more so if herbivores were present. Decreasing salinity had an unexpected effect: herbivores selectively consumed plants transplanted from the higher-salinity site. In plots protected from herbivory, decreased salinity had little effect on species numbers or biomass, but community composition changed. Overall, herbivore pressure further reduced species richness and biomass under conditions of increased flooding and increased salinity, supporting other findings that coastal marsh species can tolerate increasingly stressful conditions unless another factor, e.g., herbivory, is also present. Also, species dropped out of more stressful treatments much faster than they were added when stresses were alleviated, likely due to restrictions on dispersal. The rate at which plant communities will shift as a result of changed abiotic variables will determine if marshes remain viable when subjected to RSLR. Question: Knowledge of the interaction between understorey herb and overstorey tree layer diversity is mostly restricted to temperate forests. How do tree layer diversity and environmental variables affect herb layer attributes in subtropical forests and do these relationships change in the course of succession? Do abundance and diversity of woody saplings within the herb layer shift during succession? Location: Subtropical broad‐leaved forests in southeast China (29°8′18″‐29°17′29″N, 118°2′14″118°11′12″E). Methods: A full inventory of the herb layer including all plants below 1‐m height was done in 27 plots (10 × 10 m) from five successional stages (<20, <40, <60, <80 and ≥80 yr). We quantified the contribution of different life forms (herbaceous, woody and climber species) to herb layer diversity and productivity and analysed effects of environmental variables and tree layer diversity on these attributes. Results: Herb layer composition followed a successional gradient, as revealed by non‐metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS), but diversity was not correlated to the successional gradient. There was no correlation of diversity across layers. Herb layer productivity was neither affected by tree layer diversity nor by herb layer diversity. Although abundance of woody species in the herb layer decreased significantly during succession, woody species contributed extraordinarily to herb layer species diversity in all successional stages. All environmental factors considered had little impact on herb layer attributes. Conclusions: The subtropical forest investigated displays an immense richness of woody species in the herb layer while herbaceous species are less prominent. Species composition of the herb layer shows a clear successional pattern, however, the presence or absence of certain species appears to be random.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that selective feeding by insect herbivores in an old‐field plant community induces a shift of community structure towards less palatable plant species with lower leaf and litter tissue quality and may therefore affect nutrient cycling. Leaf palatability of 20 herbaceous plant species which are common during the early successional stages of an old‐field plant community was assayed using the generalist herbivores Deroceras reticulatum (Mollusca: Agriolomacidae) and Acheta domesticus (Ensifera: Gryllidae). Palatability was positively correlated with nitrogen content, specific leaf area and water content of leaves and negatively correlated with leaf carbon content and leaf C/N‐ratio. Specific decomposition rates were assessed in a litter bag experiment. Decomposition was positively correlated with nitrogen content of litter, specific leaf area and water content of living leaves and negatively correlated with leaf C/N‐ratio. When using phylogentically independent contrasts the correlations between palatability and decomposition versus leaf and litter traits remained significant (except for specific leaf area) and may therefore reflect functional relationships. As palatability and decomposition show similar correlations to leaf and litter traits, the correlation between leaf palatability and litter decomposition rate was also significant, and this held even in a phylogenetically controlled analysis. This correlation highlights the possible effects of invertebrate herbivory on resource dynamics. In a two‐year experiment we reduced the density of above‐ground and below‐ground insect herbivores in an early successional old‐field community in a two‐factorial design by insecticide application. The palatability ranking of plants showed no relationship with the specific change of cover abundance of plants due to the reduction of above‐ or below‐ground herbivory. Thus, changes in the dominance structure as well as potentially associated changes in the resource dynamics are not the result of differences in palatability between plant species. This highlights fundamental differences between the effects of insect herbivory on ecosystems and published results from vertebrate‐grazing systems.  相似文献

Herbivores are important drivers of plant population dynamics and community composition in natural and managed systems. Intraspecific genetic diversity of long‐lived plants like trees might shape patterns of herbivory by different guilds of herbivores that trees experience through time. However, previous studies on plant genetic diversity effects on herbivores have been largely short‐term. We investigated how tree genotypic variation and diversity influence herbivory of silver birch Betula pendula in a long‐term field experiment. Using clones of eight genotypes, we constructed experimental plots consisting of one, two, four or eight genotypes, and measured damage by five guilds of arthropod herbivores twice a year over three different years (four, six and nine years after the experiment was established). Genotypes varied significantly for most types of herbivore damage, but genotype resistance rankings often shifted over time, and none of the clones was more resistant than all others to all types of herbivores. At the plot level, birch genotypic diversity had significant positive additive effect on leaf rollers and negative non‐additive effects on chewing herbivores and gall makers. In contrast, leaf‐mining and leaf‐tying damage was not influenced by birch genotypic diversity. Within diverse plots, the direction of genotypic diversity effects varied depending on birch genotype, some having lower and some having higher herbivory in mixed stands. This research highlights the importance of long‐term studies including different feeding guilds of herbivores to understand the effects of plant genetic diversity on arthropod communities. Different responses of various feeding guilds to genotypic diversity and shifts in resistance of individual genotypes over time indicate that genotypic mixtures are unlikely to result in overall reduction in herbivory over time.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Much has been learned in recent years regarding the influence of environmental conditions on top‐down and bottom‐up effects acting on insect herbivores. Temporal variation in environmental conditions, however, has gone largely unstudied in spite of undoubtedly strong influences in most systems. 2. A 2‐year study was conducted to examine the legacy effects of previous manipulations of host plant quality and parasitism pressure on the top‐down and bottom‐up effects influencing population densities of the salt marsh planthopper Pissonotus quadripustulatus. 3. For 10 months in 1998, a 2 × 2 factorial experiment was carried out, in which host plant quality was increased by the addition of nitrogen fertiliser, and parasitism pressure was decreased through the use of yellow sticky traps. This was followed by 2 months in the winter with no treatment applications. Treatments were then reversed in 1999 for a further 10 months. 4. In 1998, fertilisation treatments increased plant quality significantly, which resulted in strong effects on P. quadripustulatus density. Parasitism reduction treatments had weaker and time‐dependent effects on the herbivore, increasing planthopper density in late summer and autumn. 5. After 2 months without treatments, previous fertilisation treatments were still influencing all response variables measured significantly. The legacy effects of fertilisation persisted for at least 7 months for the host plant, and at least 5 months for the herbivore and parasitoid. 6. Fertilisation treatments in 1999 increased P. quadripustulatus density by approximately the same percentage as in 1998, suggesting that previous reductions in parasitism had no influence on herbivore responses to increased nutrients. Parasitism reduction treatments in 1999, however, resulted in greater increases in herbivore density than in 1998, suggesting that previous increases in nutrients enabled greater responses to reductions in top‐down pressure. 7. The results show that the top‐down effects of parasitism attenuated more quickly than did the bottom‐up effects of increased plant quality through greater nutrient availability. They also suggest that the recent history of nutrient status in an ecosystem may be important in determining the relative strengths of top‐down and bottom‐up forces.  相似文献

Coastal communities are under threat from many and often co‐occurring local (e.g., pollution, eutrophication) and global stressors (e.g., climate change), yet understanding the interactive and cumulative impacts of multiple stressors in ecosystem function is far from being accomplished. Ecological redundancy may be key for ecosystem resilience, but there are still many gaps in our understanding of interspecific differences within a functional group, particularly regarding response diversity, that is, whether members of a functional group respond equally or differently to anthropogenic stressors. Herbivores are critical in determining plant community structure and the transfer of energy up the food web. Human disturbances may alter the ecological role of herbivory by modifying the defense strategies of plants and thus the feeding patterns and performance of herbivores. We conducted a suite of experiments to examine the independent and interactive effects of anthropogenic (nutrient and CO2 additions) and natural (simulated herbivory) disturbances on a seagrass and its interaction with two common generalist consumers to understand how multiple disturbances can impact both a foundation species and a key ecological function (herbivory) and to assess the potential existence of response diversity to anthropogenic and natural changes in these systems. While all three disturbances modified seagrass defense traits, there were contrasting responses of herbivores to such plant changes. Both CO2 and nutrient additions influenced herbivore feeding behavior, yet while sea urchins preferred nutrient‐enriched seagrass tissue (regardless of other experimental treatments), isopods were deterred by these same plant tissues. In contrast, carbon enrichment deterred sea urchins and attracted isopods, while simulated herbivory only influenced isopod feeding choice. These contrasting responses of herbivores to disturbance‐induced changes in seagrass help to better understand the ecological functioning of seagrass ecosystems in the face of human disturbances and may have important implications regarding the resilience and conservation of these threatened ecosystems.  相似文献

We investigated how the relative availability of solar radiation in the presence or absence of grazing alters the ability of benthic algae to respond to nutrient enrichment in an Alaskan marsh. We used a factorial mesocosm experiment that included nutrient enrichment (enriched or control), grazing (grazed or ungrazed), and light (unshaded or shaded) to simulate shading by macrophytes early and late in the growing season, respectively. We found stronger effects of grazers and nutrients compared to light on benthic algal biomass and taxonomic composition. Algal biomass increased in nutrient‐enriched treatments and was reduced by grazing. Shading did not have an effect on algal biomass or taxonomic composition, but the concentration of chl a per algal biovolume increased with shading, demonstrating the ability of algae to compensate for changes in light availability. Algal taxonomic composition was more affected by grazer presence than nutrients or light. Grazer‐resistant taxa (basal filaments of Stigeoclonium) were replaced by diatoms (Nitzschia) and filamentous green algae (Ulothrix) when herbivores were removed. The interacting and opposing influences of nutrients and grazing indicate that the algal community is under dual control from the bottom‐up (nutrient limitation) and from the top‐down (consumption by herbivores), although grazers had a stronger influence on algal biomass and taxonomic composition than nutrient enrichment. Our results suggest that low light availability will not inhibit the algal response to elevated nutrient concentrations expected with ongoing climate change, but grazers rapidly consume algae following enrichment, masking the effects of elevated nutrients on algal production.  相似文献
