Tethered flying desert locusts, Schistocerca gregaria, generate yaw-torque in response to rotation of a radial grating located beneath them. By screening parts of the pattern, rotation of the unscreened grating turned out to induce a compensatory steering (by pattern motion within transversally oriented 90° wide sectors) as well as an upwind/downwind turning response (by pattern motion within the anterior ventral 90° wide sector). The strength and polarity of responses upon the unscreened grating results from a linear superposition of these two response components. The results are discussed with regard to a functional specialization of eye regions. In a typical experiment, 3 consecutive flight-phases, assumed to mirror start, long-range flight, and landing of a free-flying locust, were distinguished. They may result from a time dependent variation of the polarity and relative strength of upwind/downwind turning and compensatory steering responses. Starting and landing phases were under strong optomotor control and were dominated by the high-gain compensatory steering. In contrast, the phase of long-range flight was under weak optomotor control resulting from a low gain in both of the two response components. The biological significance of this variable strength of optomotor control on free flight orientation of swarming locusts is discussed.  相似文献

In tethered flying locusts, optomotor thrust responses induced by translatory pattern motion within the lateral visual fields were studied under closed-loop conditions. By modulating thrust in a compensatory manner, locusts counteracted a bias motion superposed on the thrust-related motion. This way, pattern speed was kept at 0° s–1, indicating the set point of the respective optomotor control circuit. Though the quality of bias compensation varied greatly, it was largely independent from pattern characteristics. It might indicate that the gain of behavior not only is controlled by an automatic mechanism but also is affected by spontaneous modulations. Compensation of bias motion was critically dependent on the relation between self- and bias-generated motion: Locusts did not take control over pattern motion if self- and bias-generated motion differed greatly. Instead, locusts adopted a constant, supposingly preferred, thrust value. Therefore, flight speed is assumed to be controlled by two systems: the optomotor and a preferred thrust system. In free flight, an equalization of the flight speed of locusts within a swarm might result from similar behavior. In combination with a presumed coordination of the locusts' course direction, this may explain the continued cohesion of swarms in the field.  相似文献

Abstract.  [His7]-corazonin is a neuropeptide that induces dark coloration in locusts. This study examined the effect of temperature on body colour in the migratory locust, Locusta migratoria . L. Injection of a low dose (1 pmol) of [His7]-corazonin caused albino nymphs to develop dark coloration at 25–34 °C, but little darkening occurred at 38 and 42 °C. However, injection of a high dose (10 pmol) induced darkening even at these high temperatures. Transfer of nymphs injected with 1 pmol of [His7]-corazonin from 30 to 42 °C, and vice versa, indicated that temperature influenced darkening at any time after injection. Measurements of the luminance of the pronotum were made using commercially available computer software to follow continuous changes in darkening of the body. The body colour of nymphs injected with [His7]-corazonin was reddish-brown at 25 °C, blackish at 30 and 34 °C, and greyish or whitish at 38 and 42 °C. High temperature also suppressed darkening in a normal (pigmented) strain. Most nymphs transferred from 30 to 42 °C during the first three stadia developed a light colour in the fifth stadium without the striking black patterns that are typically manifested in gregarious nymphs at lower temperatures. Such individuals developed black patterns in the fifth stadium when injected with [His7]-corazonin at a mid stage of the previous stadium. These results indicate that high temperature may induce light body coloration by suppressing the release of [His7]-corazonin in normal locusts.  相似文献

Summary Flight performance in locusts is a function of age, with its peak value at 18 days after emergence. While allatectomy retards the normal development of flight capability, it also has the effect of slowing down the decline in flight performance characteristic of operated control locusts as they age. Periodic topical application of synthetic juvenile hormone remedies the initial effect of allatectomy but its effectiveness wears off with age. The period of optimum flight performance is prolonged in locusts allatectomised when mature.A characteristic features of the flight pattern of immature-allatectomised and matureallatectomised locusts when flown about one week after the operation is a rapid decline in flight speed during the first 20 minutes of flight. Eventually, as the allatectomised locusts age, they assume the flight pattern of normal locusts and subsequent differences in flight performance between operated and normal locusts are confined to differences in flight intensity.Allatectomy has no marked effect on the preflight haemolymph total lipid and carbohydrate levels, the mobilisation of lipid and the amount of carbohydrate depleted. The quantity of lipid mobilised is, however, related to flight performance in both allatectomised and operated control locusts. Locusts which fly faster mobilise more lipid. The lipids mobilised by the adipokinetic hormone are 1618; 1818 and 1616 diglycerides in order of abundance. Allatectomy has no effect on the nature of these diglycerides released during flight.  相似文献

Studies on the generation of rhythmic motor patterns have shown that peripheral sensory input may contribute substantially to the rhythm generating network. A prominent example is the wing beat frequency of desert locusts, which can be entrained to rhythmic mechanosensory input, but also to the frequency of periodic light flashes. To further analyze the entrainment by light, tethered flying locusts were presented with periodic light flashes, while the position of the forewing was filmed. We show that entrainment of wing beat occurs both in the UV and green range of light. Animals maintained a characteristic phase relationship to the light stimulus with the most elevated wing position occurring at the end of the dark phase. Speed and time course of entrainment varied greatly and ranged from the duration of a single wing beat cycle to several seconds. To identify the visual system mediating entrainment, synchronization to UV light was tested after cutting the optic stalks to the optic lobes/compound eyes or the ocellar nerves. The results show that light entrainment of the locust flight pattern is largely and perhaps exclusively mediated via the fast ocellar pathway and may have a role to stabilize flight with respect to the horizon.  相似文献

There is an increasing awareness of the possibilities of mineral nutrition as regulator of growth substance action and vice versa. The present paper focuses on the effects of mineral nutrition and benzyladenine at the level of the plasma membrane. Seedlings of wheat ( Triticum aestivum L. cv. Drabant) and juvenile plants of Plantago major L. ssp. pleiosperma (Pilger) were grown hydroponically at different mineral levels with or without benzyladenine. Purified plasmalemma preparations from roots of wheat and P. major ssp. pleiosperma were obtained by the two phase partitioning method, using 6.5% (w/w) of each of Dextran T-500 and polyethylene glycol 3350. The Mg2+ and (Mg2++ K+) dependent ATPase activities of the root plasmalemma in both species and the (Mg2++ Cl) one in P. major ssp. pleiosperma increased with increasing mineral levels, but the ionic strength did not influence the substrate specificity, the sensitivity to inhibitors or the pH optima.
The addition of 10−8 M benzyladenine to a nutrient solution increased the ATPase activities. The pH optima and the sensitivity to several inhibitors were not affected by benzyladenine, but the substrate specificity for ATP decreased, except for the K+ stimulation. In conclusion, benzyladenine mimics the effects of a higher mineral level than actually applied. Data from this and previous experiments indicate that benzyladenine exerts its effects by increasing the endogenous cytokinin concentrations and by modulating membrane components.  相似文献

Summary Although it is generally agreed that locusts can generate flight similar rhythmic motor activity in the absence of sensory feedback from the wings, recent studies indicate that functional deafferentation produces significant changes in the flight motor pattern (Hedwig and Pearson 1984). These findings have raised doubts on the adequacy of the central pattern generator concept for the locust flight system (Pearson 1985). In this paper, we re-investigate the effects of deafferentation on the capacity of adult migratory locusts to generate the flight motor pattern. For this purpose, the experimental animals were dissected to various degrees, ranging from head-ventral nerve cord, to isolated pterothoracic nerve cord, and finally single isolated ganglion preparations. Flight motor activity was released by either wind stimulation, the more traditional method, or by applying octopamine (Sombati and Hoyle 1984; Stevenson and Kutsch 1986). In all cases the released motor activity was analysed, giving details of latency, and phase relationships between specific synergistic and antagonistic motor units, and then compared with the flight motor pattern generated by intact tethered locusts. This analysis shows that deafferentation, although reducing the frequency, does not necessarily disrupt the basic flight motor pattern. By using octopamine we could show that even isolated thoracic nerve cord preparations can generate activity, which in all major aspects corresponds to this motor program. This could also be shown for the fully isolated metathoracic ganglion and we provide some evidence that the mesothoracic ganglion may be capable of a similar performance. In addition to releasing flight activity, octopamine was also found to enhance the responsiveness of deafferentated locusts to wind stimulation. This resulted in a considerable elevation of the frequency and prolongation of the flight motor activity to values comparable to the performance of intact tethered locusts.  相似文献

Summary The development of the flight motor pattern was studied by recording from the thoracic muscles of locusts of various developmental stages. In response to a short wind stimulus, larval locusts generate unpatterned motor activity, whereas newly moulted adults generate the flight pattern (Fig. 1A). The latter is equivalent to the mature adult flight pattern, although more irregular and of lower frequency. Experiments with highly deafferentated locusts indicate that the switch from the larval tonic to adult phasic flight pattern and subsequent increase in frequency are not dependent on phasic peripheral feedback from moving body structures (Fig. 1B). By using octopamine, flight motor activity could be released without need of the wind stimulus (Fig. 2). This corresponded to the normal wind released flight pattern of intact locusts, although the frequency was lower (Fig. 8). Following octopamine treatment, the response to wind stimulation was enhanced. Wind then released in deafferentated adults long flight sequences of significantly elevated frequency (Fig. 3). Although flight is essentially an adult specific behaviour, octopamine was finally found to release flight motor activity in all larval stages (Fig. 7).We conclude that major steps in the development of the flight motor circuitry are completed by the end of embryogenesis. Thus, in contrast to previous assumptions (cf. Bentley and Hoy 1970; Kutsch 1974a; Altman 1975), postembryonic changes in neither the central, nor peripheral nervous system appear to be of major importance for the ontogeny of the locust flight motor program. Whether developmental changes in the wind sensory system of the head, or levels of neurohormones such as octopamine, are related to the newly acquired responsiveness of freshly moulted adult locusts to the normal flight releasing stimulus is discussed.  相似文献

Field metabolic rates (FMR) and activity patterns of black-browed albatrosses Thalassarche melanophrys were measured while at sea and on nest during the incubation stage at Kerguelen Island, southwestern Indian Ocean. Activity-specific metabolic rates of five albatrosses at sea (FMRat-sea) were measured using doubly labeled water (DLW), and by equipping birds with wet-dry activity data loggers that determined when birds were in flight or on the water. The metabolic rates of four birds incubating their eggs (FMRon-nest) were also measured using DLW. The mean±SD FMRat-sea of albatrosses was 611±96 kJ kg−1 d−1 compared to FMRon-nest of 196±52 kJ kg−1 d−1. While at sea, albatrosses spent 52.9±8.2% (N=3) of their time in flight and they landed on the water 41.2±13.9 times per day. The FMR of black-browed albatrosses appear to be intermediate to that of three other albatross species. Based on at-sea activity, the power requirement of flight was estimated to be 8.7 W kg−1 (or 4.0×predicted BMR), which is high compared to other albatross species, but may be explained by the high activity levels of the birds when at sea. The FMRat-sea of albatrosses, when scaled with body mass, are lower than other seabirds of similar body size, which probably reflects the economical nature of their soaring flight.  相似文献

Wing kinematics of avian flight across speeds   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
To test whether wing shape affects the kinematics of wing motion during bird flight, we recorded high-speed video (250 Hz) of four species flying in a variable-speed wind tunnel. The birds flew at intervals of 2 m s−1, ranging from 1 m s−1 up to their respective maximum flight speed, which varied from 14 to 17 m s−1 depending on the species. Kinematic data obtained from two synchronized, high-speed video cameras were analyzed using 3D reconstruction. Three species with relatively pointed, high-aspect ratio wings changed wingbeat styles according to flight speed (budgerigar, Melopsittacus undulatus ; cockatiel, Nymphicus hollandicus ; ringed turtle dove, Streptopelia risoria ). These species used a wing-tip reversal upstroke, characterized by supination of the distal wing at mid-upstroke, at equivalent airspeeds ≤7 to 9 m s−1. In faster flight, they used a swept-wing upstroke, without distal wing supination. At mid-upstroke at any speed, wingspan in these species was greater than wrist span. In contrast, at all steady flight speeds, the black-billed magpie Pica hudsonia with relatively broad, low-aspect ratio wings, used a flexed-wing, feathered upstroke in which wrist spans were equal to or greater than wingspans. Our results demonstrate that wing kinematics vary gradually as a function of flight speed, and that the patterns of variation are strongly influenced by external wing shape.  相似文献

The lift response of houseflies Musca domestica in fixed flight to periodic gratings movins in 12 different orientations has been measured. Two projectors were arranged symmetrically to the flies stimulating successively 18 circular patches of 50° (25°) diameter (9 for each eye) in their visual field. The shapes of the lift responses measured as a function of the orientation of the moving grating varied when different patches in the visual field were stimulated. A qualitative comparison of these response curves leads to the conclusion that the orientation of the movement detecting substrate acting on the flight lift response varies as a function of the stimulated area in the visual field. A straightforward correlation between the geometry of the ommatidial pattern and the orientation of the movement detecting substrate valid for all stimulated areas of the compound eyes does not seem very likely.  相似文献

Mature laboratory locusts normally exhibit a characteristic pattern of change in flight speed with time. They fly at high speed for the first few minutes, during which carbohydrate forms the major fuel, but then slow to a cruising speed when lipid is used almost exclusively. Locusts flown for 30 min, rested for 2hr, and then reflown, exhibit an identical pattern of flight, even though they oxidise only half the amount of carbohydrate used in the first flight. The injection of adipokinetic hormone before the first flight elicits a low initial flight speed for 10 to 15 min but then the locusts accelerate to a constant higher speed. The injection of hormone before the second flight, when blood lipid levels are already high, reduces the utilization of carbohydrate by the flight muscles dramatically but results in constant high-speed flight.  相似文献

Seedlings of spring wheat ( Triticum aestivum L. cv. Svenno) were cultivated at 20°C in continuous light or darkness with the roots in nutrient solutions for six days. The plants were starved for K+ during different periods of time to produce plants with various K+ status. In one cultivation light-grown plants were pretreated in darkness, and vice versa, before the uptake experiment. In all experiments, roots were put in a complete nutrient medium containing 2.0 m M K+ radiolabelled with 86Rb. The uptake time was varied (5, 60 or 120 min).
The K+ concentration in the roots, [K+]root, increased during the course of the uptake experiments, especially in light and at initially low [K+]root, At the same time K+ (86Rb) influx in the roots decreased. The simoidal relationship obtained between K+ (86Rb) influx and [K+]root was affected by these changes, and Hill plots gave various Hill coefficients, nH, depending on the duration of the uptake experiments. nH from three apparently straight line segments of the same plot, in different [K+]root - intervals, indicated a falling degree of interaction between the binding sites as [K+]root increased. For the dark-grown plants negative cooperativity could not be demonstrated.  相似文献

Nocturnal autumn bird migration at Falsterbo, South Sweden   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
We investigated the patterns of nocturnal bird migration in autumn 1998 at a coastal site on the Falsterbo peninsula in south-western Sweden, by means of a passive infrared device. In total 17 411 flight paths, including track direction and altitude, of migrating birds were recorded for 68 nights from August to October. Mean migratory traffic rate per night varied between 6 and 6618 birds km−1 h−1, with an average of 1319 birds km−1 h−1. Migration at Falsterbo showed a similar seasonal pattern to that reported for central Europe, with pronounced peaks of migration and intermittent periods with relatively low migratory intensities. Weather factors explained two thirds of the variance in the intensity of bird migration. During nights with intense migration, associated with weak winds, the mean track direction was close to that in central western Europe (225°). Birds usually maintained a constant heading independent of wind directions and, in consequence, were drifted by the wind. The mean orientation clearly differed from that of the nearest coastline, suggesting that the birds did not use the topography below to compensate for wind drift.  相似文献

Swifts Apus apus are renowned for their fast flight manner which has fascinated people in all times. However, previous studies of swifts in flight during migration and roosting flights have shown that the birds operate over a narrow range of flight speeds compared with most other birds studied. In this study we have focused on the special flight behavior often called 'screaming parties'. During these flights the birds appear to reach very high speeds and therefore we used a stereo high speed camera setup to measure the flight speeds of the birds during this behavior with high accuracy. The birds were found to fly at much higher speeds during 'screaming parties' than during migration or roosting, on average twice as fast, 20.9  ms−1 (±5.1  ms−1) in horizontal speed. The highest record was 31.1  ms−1 which is the highest measured yet for a swift in self powered flight. Furthermore, the birds were performing steep climbing flights, on average 4.0  ms−1 (±2.8  ms−1) in vertical velocity. A clear trade-off between horizontal speed and vertical speed was found, suggesting that the birds are operating at their maximum.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Studies were conducted in Zimbabwe of the catch of Glossina pallidipes Austen from an electric net plus target baited with mixtures of acetone plus carbon dioxide or 1-octen-3-ol (octenol) plus carbon dioxide. For acetone dispensed alone at 5–50, 000 mg h-1, ten-fold increments in the dose increased the catch 1.7 times. For carbon dioxide dispensed alone, dose increments from 12 to 1201 h-1 doubled the catch, but the catch was not further increased by dispensing carbon dioxide at 600–1200 1 h-1. For mixtures of these two odours, ten-fold increments in the dose of carbon dioxide between 12 and 12, 0001 h-1 increased the catch c . 2.5 times if acetone was also dispensed at >50 mg h-1; changes in the dose of acetone between 50 and 50 000 mg h-1 did not affect the catch. The addition of octenol (0.05 mg h-1) to carbon dioxide (12–12001 h-1) doubled the catch. Ten-fold increments in the dose of octenol between 0.05 and 5 mg h-1 did not increase the catch significantly and the catch was independent of changes in the dose of carbon dioxide between 120 and 12001 h-1. The behavioural basis of the dose-response curves was investigated using an incomplete ring of electric nets to assess the flight orientation of tsetse in different odours. Upwind flight was not elicited by acetone or octenol alone, or by carbon dioxide unless it was at very high doses, however, mixtures of carbon dioxide with acetone or octenol elicited upwind flight. It is suggested that the attractiveness of mixtures of acetone and carbon dioxide is a function of the region of overlap of these two odours at above threshold concentration. Acetone and octenol on their own appear to increase the responsiveness of flies to visual cues.  相似文献

The major excitatory neurotransmitter in the CNS, glutamate, can be released exocytotically by neurons and astrocytes. Glutamate released from neurons can affect adjacent astrocytes by changing their intracellular Ca2+ dynamics and, vice versa , glutamate released from astrocytes can cause a variety of responses in neurons such as: an elevation of [Ca2+]i, a slow inward current, an increase of excitability, modulation of synaptic transmission, synchronization of synaptic events, or some combination of these. This astrocyte-neuron signaling pathway might be a widespread phenomenon throughout the brain with astrocytes possessing the means to be active participants in many functions of the CNS. Thus, it appears that the vesicular release of glutamate can serve as a common denominator for two of the major cellular components of the CNS, astrocytes and neurons, in brain function.  相似文献

Abstract: Bradykinin (BK) receptor and P2-purinergic receptor are known to be coupled to phospholipase C (PLC) in PC12 cells. To study the interaction between these two PLC-linked receptors, the presence of both receptors on individual cells was demonstrated by sequential Ca2+ spikes caused by BK and ATP in a single fura-2-loaded cell. BK- and ATP-induced catecholamine (CA) secretions were desensitized within 5 min. However, in the sequential experiment, the BK-induced homologous desensitization of CA secretion did not block the ATP-induced secretion, and vice versa. Each agonist-induced an increase in inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3) production and intracellular free Ca2+ concentration also led to homologous desensitization. However, there was no heterologous desensitization between the two agonists. When the cells were treated with both BK and ATP simultaneously, the amounts of CA secretion, IP3 production, internal Ca2+ mobilization, and Ca2+ influx were all additive. We also found that both IP3-induced Ca2+ release from intracellular Ca2+ stores and Ca2+ influx from extracellular space were able to release [3H]norepinephrine, and the secretion induced by both agonists was exactly additive in the absence or presence of extracellular Ca2+. The data suggest that the CA secretions caused by BK or ATP may have separate secretory pathways even though they activate identical second messenger pathways.  相似文献

At-sea metabolism (CO2 production) and water turnover of six breeding Grey-headed Albatrosses Diomedea chrysostoma were measured, using the doubly labelled water method, at Bird Island, South Georgia, Mean food consumption (estimated from a water influx rate of 1.01 1 d-1 and data on dietary composition) was 1200gd-1 or 50.4 W. At-sea metabolism (derived from a rate of CO2 production of 3.98 1 h-1) was 27.7 W, 2.5 times the estimated basal metabolic rate (BMR). On average the birds ingested nearly twice as much food energy as they expended to obtain it. The metabolic rate during flight (estimated from at-sea metabolism and activity budget data) was 36.3 W (range 34.7–39.0 W) or 3.2 (range 3.0–3.4) times the predicted BMR. This is the lowest cost of flight yet measured, but consistent with the highly developed adaptations for economic flight shown by albatrosses. These results are briefly compared with data for other polar vertebrates (penguins, fur seals) exploiting similar prey.  相似文献

MECHANISMS ACTIVATING GLYCOLYSIS IN THE BRAIN IN ARTERIAL HYPOXIA   总被引:14,自引:11,他引:3
Abstract— In order to study regulatory steps responsible for the activation of anaerobic glycolysis in the brain during hypoxia, cerebral concentrations of carbohydrate substrates and organic phosphates were measured in rats after reduction of the arterial PO2 to 23-25 mm Hg for 2, 5 and 15 min. The results demonstrated a progressive accumulation of lactate as well as of pyruvate and malate in the absence of changes in ATP, A DP, AMP, citrate and ammonia. The pattern of substrate changes obtained indicate that hypoxia is accompanied by activation of pyruvate kinase and of hexokinase, but not of phosphofructokinase. There was a progressive fall in intracellular pH and a moderate increase in the calculated cytoplasmic NADH/NAD+ ratio. The changes in pyruvate and in the NADH/NAD+ ratio may be responsible for the observed increase in the malate concentration.  相似文献
