The effects of drought stress induced by polyethylene glycol, PEG (molecular mass 6000) on some ecophysiological characteristics of two wild pistachio species, Mastic and Khinjuk (P. mutica and P. khinjuk) selected as root stocks for production of edible pistachio trees (P. vera) in Iran and Turkey, were studied. Net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence parameters, leaf water potential (Ψ1), leaf osmotic potential (Ψπ), leaf osmotic adjustment (ΔΨπ), and Chl a and b were measured. All parameters were influenced by increase in concentra-tion of PEG in the nutrient solutions. P N, g s, and Chl a were significantly higher in P. mutica than in P. khinjuk but, compared to the control treatment, P. khinjuk showed a higher resistance to drought stress than P. mutica. Thirty-days-old plants of two cultivars of okra (Hibiscus esculentus L.), Sabzpari and Chinese-red, were subjected for 30 d to two water regimes (100 and 60 % field capacity). Leaf water potential and osmotic potential of both lines decreased significantly with the imposition of drought. Both the leaf pressure potential and osmotic adjustment were much lower in Chinese-red than those in Sabzpari. Chlorophyll (Chl) b content increased, whereas Chl a content remained unchanged and thus Chl a/b ratios were reduced in both lines. Drought stress also caused a significant reduction in net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (g s), and water use efficiency (WUE) especially in cv. Sabzpari. The lines did not differ in intrinsic WUE (P Ngs) or intercellular/ambient CO2 ratio. Overall, the growth of two okra cultivars was positively correlated with P N, but not with g s or P N/E, and negatively correlated with osmotic adjustment.  相似文献

The source level in the olive cultivar Leccino was varied by girdling at different stages of fruit growth. Afterwards, the effects on gas exchange, fruit growth, and ripening and blooming were studied. Girdling during fruit growth did not significantly influence net photosynthetic rate (P N) except in the last phase of fruit growth when the P N was reduced. In the girdled branch, P N began to decrease at the onset of starch accumulation because fruit growth ceased. In mid-November stomatal conductance (g s) and transpiration rate (E) were also reduced by girdling, whereas sub-stomatal CO2 concentration (C i) increased in leaves from the girdled branches. The total chlorophyll content (Chl) tended to decrease in parallel with the reduced P N. Girdling did not substantially influence the leaf and shoot water contents. The large availability of assimilates seems to cause an earlier fruit ripening. In general, girdling increased fruit dry mass. Healing before the time when the majority of pulp growth occurs reduced the effect of girdling. June girdling increased the pit dry mass. Girdling at the beginning of August and September, compared to the control, increased the pulp dry mass, but the pit dry mass did not differ with respect to the control. The percentage of oil in the fruit, on a dry mass basis, increased with August and September girdlings, but the percentage of oil in the pulp did not change. Girdling reduced shoot growth, but the internode length was unchanged. Girdling slightly stimulated differentiation of flower buds.  相似文献

Effect of Fruiting on Leaf Gas Exchange in Olive (Olea Europaea L.)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The effect on traits of photosynthesis and water relations of assimilate demand was studied in olive tree that has strong alternate bearing. The diurnal and seasonal leaf gas exchanges, area dry mass, and saccharide and chlorophyll (Chl) contents were measured by comparing shoots with fruit of "on-trees" (heavy fruit load) with shoots without fruit on both "on-trees" and "off-trees" (light fruit load). In spite of large seasonal and diurnal differences, leaf net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), sub-stomatal CO2 concentration (C 1), transpiration rate (E), and respiration rate (R D) were not significantly influenced by fruit load or by the presence or absence of fruit on the shoot. An only exception was at the beginning of July when the one-year-old leaves on shoots with fruit had slightly higher P N and E than leaves on shoots without fruit. Water content, Chl and saccharide contents, and area dry mass of the leaf were not substantially influenced by the presence/absence of fruit on the shoot or fruit load. Hence the sink demand, associated with fruit growth, did not improve leaf photosynthetic efficiency in olive. Effects of plant hormones indole-3-yl-acetic acid (IAA), gibberellic acid (GA), benzylaminopurine (BAP), abscisic acid (ABA) and ethrel (ETH) in 5 M concentration on gas exchange, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBPCO, EC 4.1.1.39) activity, pigment content and yield in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L. cv. H-777) under drought were studied. At reproductive stage (55 – 60 d after sowing) these hormones were sprayed on shoots one day prior to stress imposition by withholding irrigation. The soil moisture of control plants was kept at field capacity. Net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration rate (E), carboxylation efficiency (CE), water use efficiency (WUE), RuBPCO activity, boll number per plant, seed number per plant and lint mass per plant significantly decreased at drought while chlorophyll (Chl) b content and flower number per plant increased. ABA and ETH significantly reduced gas exchange parameters, Chl a and Chl b content. Detrimental drought effect on PN, gs, E, CE, RuBPCO and lint mass per plant was significantly alleviated by BAP and also its effect on seed number and lint mass per plant was significantly alleviated with the ABA treatment.  相似文献

Plants of an Egyptian cultivar of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Giza 63) were exposed in open-top chambers (OTCs) for 8 h d–1 for up to 75 d to a factorial combination of two levels of salinity (0 and 50 mM NaCl) and two levels of O3 (filtered air and 50 mm3 m–3). Exposure to 50 mm3 m–3 O3 significantly decreased stomatal conductance (g s), net photosynthetic rate (P N), and chlorophyll (Chl) content by 20, 25, and 21 %, respectively. This reduction resulted in a change in assimilate allocation in favour of shoot growth leading to a decrease in root to shoot ratio and eventually to a decrease in relative growth rate (RGR) of both root and shoot. There was a very large reduction in yield parameters, especially in the number of ears/plant and 1 000-grain mass. Soil salinity significantly reduced P N and g s by 17 and 15 %, respectively, while Chl content was increased by 17 %. Root growth was decreased leading to an increase in root/shoot ratio. Yield parameters were decreased due to salt stress. There was antagonistic interaction between salinity (50 mM NaCl) and O3 (50 mm3 m–3) showing that salinity effectively protects against the adverse effects of O3 by increasing g s during O3 fumigation.  相似文献

Changes in chloroplastidic pigments, gas exchange and carbohydrate concentrations were assessed during the rapid initial expansion of C. guianensis leaflet. Leaves at metaphyll stage were tagged and assessments were carried out 14, 17, 20, 23, 27, and 31 days later. Pigments synthesis, distribution and accumulation were uniform among leaflet sections (basal, median and apical). Chlorophyll (Chl) a, Chl b, Chl (a+b), and total carotenoids (Car) concentrations were significantly increased after 27 days from metaphyll, and the most expressive increases were parallel to lower specific leaflet area. Chl a/b was lower on day 14 and it was increased on subsequent days. Negative net photosynthesis rate (P N), and the lowest stomatal conductance (g s) and transpiration (E) were registered on day 14, following significant increases on subsequent days. The Chl (a+b) and Chl a effects on P N were more expressive until day 20. Intercellular to ambient CO2 concentration ratio (C i/C a) was higher on day 14 and lower on subsequent days, and no stomatal limitation to CO2 influx inside leaflets was observed. Leaflet temperature was almost constant (ca. 35°C) during leaflet development. Sucrose and starch concentrations were increased in parallel to increases in P N. Altogether, these results highlight the main physiological changes during C. guianensis leaflet expansion and they should be considered in future experiments focusing on factors affecting P N in this species.  相似文献

The possibility to improve the recovery of sugar beet plants after water stress by application of synthetic cytokinins N6-benzyladenine (BA) or N6-(m-hydroxybenzyl)adenosine (HBA) was tested. Relative water content (RWC), net photosynthetic rate (PN), transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (gs), chlorophyll (Chl) a and Chl b contents, and photosystem 2 efficiency characterized by variable to maximal fluorescence ratio (Fv/Fm) were measured in control plants, in water-stressed plants, and after rehydration (4, 8, 24, and 48 h). Water stress markedly decreased parameters of gas exchange, but they started to recover soon after irrigation. Application of BA or HBA to the substrate or sprayed on leaves only slightly stimulated recovery of PN, E, and gs in rehydrated plants, especially during the first phases of recovery. Chl contents decreased only under severe water stress and Fv/Fm ratio was not significantly affected by water stress applied. Positive effects of BA or HBA application on Chl content and Fv/Fm ratio were mostly not observed.  相似文献

Seedling performance may determine plant distribution, especially in water-limited environments. Plants of Caragana korshinskii commonly grow in arid and semiarid areas in northwestern China, and endure water shortage in various ways, but little is known about their performance when water shortage occurs at early growth stages. The water relations, photosynthetic activity, chlorophyll (Chl) content and proline accumulation were determined in 1-year-old seedlings growing in a 1:1 mixture of Loess soil and Perlite and subjected to (1) a water deficit for 20 days and (2) kept adequately watered throughout. The water deficit induced low (−6.1 MPa) predawn leaf water potentials (LWP), but did not induce any leaf abscission. Stomatal conductance (g s), leaf transpiration rate (E), and net photosynthetic rate (P N) decreased immediately following the imposition of the water deficit, while the maximal photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) (Fv/Fm) and the effective quantum yield of PSII (ΦPSII) decreased 15 days later. An early and rapid decrease in g s, reduced E, increased Chl (a+b) loss, increased the apparent rate of photochemical transport of electrons through PSII (ETR)/P N, as well as a gradual increase in non-photochemical quenching of fluorescence (NPQ) and proline may have contributed to preventing ΦPSII from photodamage. C. korshinskii seedlings used a stress-tolerance strategy, with leaf maintenance providing a clear selective advantage, considering the occasional rainfall events during the growing season.  相似文献

Inconsistency of cropping is an important problem for UK sweet cherry production. Premature fruit abscission in Prunus can reduce yields severely, however, the environmental cues and hormonal signals that trigger abscission have not been identified. Auxin (IAA) is known to delay abscission by reducing the sensitivity of cells in the abscission zone to ethylene, a promoter of abscission. Therefore, the capacity for polar auxin transport (PAT) through sweet cherry pedicels was examined in relation to fruit abscission. Cherry ‘spurs’ (short shoots) with similar leaf areas and different fruit numbers were phloem-girdled to restrict assimilate movement. Abscission from spurs with many fruit (eight or more) occurred within 14 days of girdling, whereas abscission from spurs with few (two) fruit was minimal. The pedicels’ capacity for PAT in spurs with different fruit numbers was determined 1, 3 and 9 days after girdling (DAG). Fruit were analysed for endogenous IAA concentration 3, 5, 7 and 9 DAG. PAT inhibitors 2,3,5-triiodobenzoic acid or 1-N-naphthylphtalamic acid were applied to pedicels of fruit not expected to abscise, i.e. on spurs with few fruit. The effect of these inhibitors on fruit abscission was determined 14 DAG. The proportion of the transported [3H]-IAA was lower from the outset in pedicels from spurs with many fruit. By 9 DAG, symptoms of fruit abscission were apparent and 40% less [3H] -IAA was transported through pedicels on spurs with many fruit. Fruit endogenous IAA concentrations were similar in the two groups of spurs. Application of PAT inhibitors shortly after girdling increased fruit abscission by 30%. The results suggest that although a decline in PAT is not the only cause of fruit abscission, the maintenance of PAT contributes to fruit retention.  相似文献

The inter-and intra-specific physiological differences, e.g. rates of net photosynthesis (P N) and transpiration (E), stomatal conductance (g s), and water use efficiency (WUE), were compared between two grasses, Calamagrostis epigeios (L.) Roth. and Psammochloa villosa (Trin.) Bor., and between their leaf types in a desertification steppe in North China. The two species had a similar habitat, but differed in leaf area and rhizome depth. Leaf P N, E, and g s for P. villosa were significantly greater than those for C. epigeios in the growing season, but WUE for the former species was only 50 and 80 % of that for the latter one in dry and rainy seasons, respectively. In general, leaf P N, E, g s, and WUE for both vegetative and reproductive shoots of the two species exhibited little variations between leaf types or with leaf age, even though there were some remarkable differences between dry and rainy seasons. The mean leaf P N and E in reproductive shoots of P. villosa were significantly lower than those in its vegetative shoots in rainy season, while these differences were much smaller for those of C. epigeios. P. villosa with deeper rhizome roots has relative higher leaf P N, E, and g s, but a smaller WUE in the arid desertification steppe region.  相似文献

The influence of different leaf-to-fruit (l-t-f) ratios on leaf net photosynthetic rate (P N) and fruit characteristics in Olea europaea L. cv. Frantoio was evaluated in 2001 and 2002. In both years, at the end of June, at the end of July, and in mid-September (first, second, and third time of treatment, respectively), defoliation or fruit thinning were performed to give l-t-f ratios of 1/1, 3/1, 5/1, and 7/1 (about 5.1, 15.3, 25.6, and 35.8 cm2 of leaf area per fruit, respectively) on girdled and ungirdled peripheral shoots. P N showed substantial seasonal and diurnal variations. In ungirdled shoots, no differences due to the different l-t-f ratios were observed, whereas in girdled shoots P N tended to be lower in shoots with a high l-t-f ratio. In general, the values of leaf transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (g s), sub-stomatal CO2 concentration (C i), and dark respiration rate (R D) were associated with those of P N. The starch and reducing sugar contents and area leaf dry mass (ADM) tended to be higher in leaves on girdled shoots with high l-t-f ratio, whereas in ungirdled shoots no differences related to the different l-t-f ratios were observed. The higher saccharide content in the leaves and the lower P N, in the presence of a high C i, observed in girdled shoots with a high l-t-f ratio suggests that the depression in P N in these shoots may be the result of a feedback inhibition of the photosynthetic mechanism that regulates such a process. The l-t-f ratio did not have a substantial effect on fruit drop. In ungirdled shoots, the different l-t-f ratios did not produce significant differences in terms of fruit growth and leaf dry matter and saccharide contents, whereas in girdled shoots fruit growth increased as the l-t-f ratio increased, particularly when treatments were applied at the initial stage of fruit development. The percentage of oil in the pulp, on a dry matter basis, was not substantially influenced by girdling and l-t-f ratio. The abundant availability of assimilates seemed to cause earlier fruit ripening and, at the same time, retard fruit senescence (fruit detachment force). Shoot growth was slightly reduced by girdling. The abundant availability of assimilates, induced by girdling associated with high l-t-f ratio, stimulated flower induction.  相似文献

High variability in leaf gas exchange and related traits were found in 30 genotypes of field grown finger millet. The variability in carbon exchange rate per unit leaf area (P N) can be partly attributed to the differences in the stomatal conductance (gs) and area leaf mass (ALM). The P N was positively correlated with total dry matter (TDM). However, no relationship between P N and seed yield was found. The leaf area showed a positive and significant correlation with total biomass. None of the other gas-exchange traits had significant relationship either with TDM or with seed yield. The ALM showed a strong positive association with P N. However, it was not correlated with either total biomass or seed yield. As a result, the use of ALM as surrogate for P N for identifying high biomass producing genotypes only had a limited value. Hence selection for high P N would result in higher biomass producing types.  相似文献

Photosynthetic rate (PN) and chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence induction of source leaves in response to a low sink demand created by girdling the branch (GB) between the root-tuber-system and the leaves were studied in Dahlia pinnata L. cv. Rigolet during the stage of rapid tuber growth in the greenhouse. GB resulted in significantly lower values of PN, stomatal conductance (gs), and transpiration rate (E), but in higher leaf temperature (Tl) compared with those of controls. With exception of maximum quantum yield of photosystem 2 (PS 2) photochemistry (Fv/Fm) and maximum ratio of quantum yields of photochemical and concurrent non-photochemical processes in PS 2 (Fv/F0), no significant differences were observed in Chl fluorescence parameters between girdled and control leaves on days 1 and 2 after GB, indicating no apparent damage in the photosynthetic apparatus. However, longer girdling duration resulted in higher non-photochemical Chl fluorescence quenching (NPQ), but lower Fv/F0, actual efficiency of energy conversion in PS 2 under steady-state conditions (ΦPS2), and photochemical quenching coefficient (qP) in comparison with controls from 10:00 to 16:00 or 15:00 on days 4 and 5, respectively, indicating reversible injury in the photosynthetic apparatus.  相似文献

One-year-old olive trees (cv. Koroneiki) were grown in plastic containers of 50 000 cm3 under full daylight and 30, 60, and 90 % shade for two years. The effects of shade on leaf morphology and anatomy, including stomatal density and chloroplast structure, net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), and fruit yield were studied. Shade reduced leaf thickness due to the presence of only 1–2 palisade layers and reduced the length of palisade cells and spongy parenchyma. The number of thylakoids in grana as well as in stroma increased as shade increased, while the number of plastoglobuli decreased in proportion to the reduced photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). The higher the level of shade, the lower the stomatal and trichome density, leaf mass per area (ALM), g s, and P N. Shade of 30, 60, and 90 % reduced stomatal density by 7, 16, and 27 %, respectively, while the corresponding reduction in P N was 21, 35, and 67 %. In contrast, chlorophyll a+b per fresh mass, and leaf width, length, and particularly area increased under the same shade levels (by 16, 33, and 81 % in leaf area). P N reduction was due both to a decrease in PAR and to the morphological changes in leaves. The effect of shade was more severe on fruit yield per tree (32, 67, and 84 %) than on P N indicating an effect on bud differentiation and fruit set. The olive tree adapts well to shade compared with other fruit trees by a small reduction in stomatal and trichome density, palisade parenchyma, and a significant increase in leaf area.  相似文献

In order to investigate the effect of day/night temperature difference (DIF) on photosynthetic characteristics of tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum, cv. Jinguan 5) at fruit stage, an experiment was carried out in climate chambers. Five day/night temperature regimes (16/34, 19/31, 25/25, 31/19, and 34/16°C) with respective DIFs of -18, -12, 0, +12, and +18 were used and measured at mean daily temperature of 25°C. The results showed that chlorophyll (Chl) a, Chl b, net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), maximum quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (Fv/Fm), effective quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (?PSII), and photochemical quenching (qp) significantly increased under positive DIF, while they decreased with negative DIF. In contrast, the Chl a/b ratio and nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) decreased under positive DIF, while increased with negative DIF. Chl a, Chl b, PN, gs, Fv/Fm, ?PSII, and qp were larger under +12 DIF than those at +18 DIF, while Chl a/b and NPQ showed an opposite trend.  相似文献

Changes of photosynthesis under blue light were examined in the ABA-overproducing 7B-1 mutant in tomato. Net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), intrinsic water-use efficiency (WUEi) and chlorophyll (a+b) [Chl (a+b)] content in leaves of different insertion (1st, 4th and 9th ones) were measured in 5-, 7- and 9-week-old plants. P N, g s, and Chl (a+b) content were mostly similar in young leaves of 7B-1 and wild type (WT) plants. With the aging of leaves, a blue-light-induced increase in P N and g s to steady-state was delayed and steady-state values of P N and g s were lower in 7B-1 plants compared with WT. Steady-state values of WUEi were increased in 4th and 9th leaves of 7B-1 plants compared with WT. The results can be explained by the higher endogenous level of ABA in 7B-1 plants and their lower sensitivity to ABA in earlier growth stage.  相似文献

Wheat plants grown in controlled growth chambers were exposed to drought stress (DS) and high temperature (HT) singly and in combination (DS+HT). The effects of these two stresses on net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), intercellular CO2 concentration (C i), quantum efficiency of photosystem 2 (ΦPS2), variable to maximum chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence (Fv/Fm), photochemical (qp) and non-photochemical (NPQ) Chl fluorescence, and yield were investigated. Grain yield was decreased by 21 % due to DS, while it was increased by 26 % due to HT. P N, g s, C i, and Chl fluorescence were dramatically reduced to DS, HT, and their interaction, except NPQ which showed an increase due to HT.  相似文献

Diurnal changes in net photosynthetic rate (P N), chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence, and stomatal aperture of several hybrid poplar clones subjected to midday light stress were measured in July and August of 1996. Midday depression of P N, photosystem 2 (PS2) efficiency, stomatal conductance (g s), and stomatal aperture was observed in all clones, though at differing rates among them. Non-uniform stomatal closure occurred at noon and at other times, requiring a modification of intercellular CO2 concentration (C 1). A linear relationship was found between g s and stomatal aperture. More than half of the photons absorbed by PS2 centre dissipated thermally when subjected to light stress at noon. There was a linear relationship between the rate of PS2 photochemical electron transport (PxPFD) and P N. There was a consensus for two fluorescence indicators (1 – qP/qN and (Fm' – F)/Fm') in assessment of susceptibility of photoinhibition in the clones. According to P N, Chl fluorescence, and stomatal aperture, we conclude that midday depression of photosynthesis can be attributed to both stomatal and non-stomatal limitations.  相似文献

The effects of nitrogen (N) supply restriction on the CO2 assimilation and photosystem 2 (PS2) function of flag leaves were compared between two contrastive Japanese rice cultivars, a low-yield cultivar released one century ago, cv. Shirobeniya (SRB), and a recently improved high-yield cultivar, cv. Akenohoshi (AKN). Both cultivars were solution-cultured at four N supply levels from N4 (control) to N1 (the lowest). With a reduction in N-supply, contents of N (LNC), ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBPCO), and chlorophyll (Chl) in flag leaves decreased in both cultivars. In parallel with this, the net photosynthetic rate (P N), mesophyll conductance (g m), and stomatal conductance (g s) decreased. P N was more dominantly restricted by g m than g s. The values of P N, g m, and RuBPCO content were larger in AKN than SRB at the four N supply levels. The content of Chl greatly decreased with N deficiency, but the reduction in the maximum quantum yield of PS2 was relatively small. Quantum yield of PS2 (ΦPS2) decreased with N deficiency, and its significant cultivar difference was observed between the two cultivars at N1: a high value was found in AKN. The content ratio of Chl/RuBPCO was also significantly low in AKN. The low Chl/RuBPCO is one of the reasons why AKN maintained a comparatively high P N and ΦPS2 at N deficiency. The adequate ratio of N distribution between Chl and RuBPCO is the important prerequisite for the efficient and sustainable photosynthesis in a flag leaf of rice plant under low N-input.  相似文献
