Torquirhynchia inconstans, a rhynchonellid brachiopod, shows a curious asymmetric commissure. This is interpreted as an adaptation to life in tidal environments. Type of preservation, growth line, and size frequency analysis indicate that the population analyzed consist of dominantly mature individuals, which by analogy with recent brachiopod populations is a primary feature of the original population, and not due to selective destruction, selective transport, or selective predation of smaller individuals. The possible functions of the asymmetry of Torquirhynchia inconstans are considered, and it is concluded that the brachiopod was adapted to life in tidal environments, a conclusion supported by sedimentological evidence. Asymmetric brachiopods are considered to have developed from colonies of partly asymmetric, variable brachiopods by selection of extreme variants.  相似文献

The rhynchonellid brachiopod Obliquorhynchia flustracea from the middle Danian (Paleocene) cool‐water coral mounds of the Faxe Formation, Denmark, exhibits commissural asymmetry, a rare feature in articulate brachiopods. It has been much discussed whether the underlying reasons for this asymmetry were species specific caused by pedicle attachment in the limited space between the branches of the scleractinian Dendrophyllia candelabrum. The two species are always found together, and the brachiopod is essentially missing outside facies characterized by Dcandelabrum. Based on morphological analyses and statistical tests, we suggest that ecophenotypic variation is the main reason for the variability in the external shell morphology and development of commissural asymmetry. Conditions such as sexual dimorphism and defects can be dismissed as a facilitating reason of phenotypic variation. This is a rare case where it is possible to directly link commissural asymmetry to mode of attachment on a specific host.  相似文献

A recently discovered feature of plant–flower visitor webs is the asymmetric specialization of the interaction partners: specialized plants interact mainly with generalized flower visitors and specialized flower visitors mainly with generalized plants. Little is known about the factors leading to this asymmetry and their consequences for the extinction risk of species. Previous studies have proposed random interactions proportional to species abundance as an explanation. However, the simulation models used in these studies did not include potential biological constraints. In the present study, we tested the potential role of both morphological constraints and species abundance in promoting asymmetric specialization. We compared actual field data of a Mediterranean plant–flower visitor web with predictions of Monte Carlo simulations including different combinations of the potential factors structuring the web. Our simulations showed that both nectar-holder depth and abundance were able to produce asymmetry; but that the expected degree of asymmetry was stronger if based on both. Both factors can predict the number of interaction partners, but only nectar-holder depth was able to predict the degree of asymmetry of a certain species. What is more, without the size threshold the influence of abundance would disappear over time. Thus, asymmetric specialization seems to be the result of a size threshold and, only among the allowed interactions above this size threshold, a result of random interactions proportional to abundance. The simulations also showed that asymmetric specialization could not be the reason that the extinction risk of specialists and generalists is equalized, as suggested in the literature. In asymmetric webs specialists clearly had higher short-term extinction risks. In fact, primarily generalist visitors seem to profit from asymmetric specialization. In our web, specialists were less abundant than generalists. Therefore, including abundance in the simulation models increased the difference between specialists and generalists even more. In the Cantabrian Mountains (NW Spain) a strong difference exists between Emsian articulate brachiopod species diversity compared to that of other remaining Devonian stages (169 Emsian species versus 210 species for the rest of the Devonian). Historical, paleogeographic and eustatic reasons are presented that could in part explain this numerical asymmetry. The Emsian stratigraphy of the Asturo-Leonian domain Emsian is briefly discussed and related to both global bio-events and eustatic and magnetosusceptibility events. Spiriferids are the most diversified Emsian brachiopod group (44 species). Despite this fact only nine of these spiriferid species have adequately been described and/or figured in recent times. This paper focuses on the Asturo-Leonian domain upper Emsian Spinelloidea and Cyrtospiriferoidea. Nine species (five new) are described and/or figured belonging to six genera (four new). The meaning of the term “crural plates” and its diagnostic value in the taxonomic characterization of the Family Spinellidae is discussed.  相似文献

Many animals develop left-right (LR) asymmetry in their internal organs. The mechanisms of LR asymmetric development are evolutionarily divergent, and are poorly understood in invertebrates. Therefore, we studied the genetic pathway of LR asymmetric development in Drosophila. Drosophila has several organs that show directional and stereotypic LR asymmetry, including the embryonic gut, which is the first organ to develop LR asymmetry during Drosophila development. In this study, we found that genes encoding components of the Wnt-signaling pathway are required for LR asymmetric development of the anterior part of the embryonic midgut (AMG). frizzled 2 (fz2) and Wnt4, which encode a receptor and ligand of Wnt signaling, respectively, were required for the LR asymmetric development of the AMG. arrow (arr), an ortholog of the mammalian gene encoding low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 5/6, which is a co-receptor of the Wnt-signaling pathway, was also essential for LR asymmetric development of the AMG. These results are the first demonstration that Wnt signaling contributes to LR asymmetric development in invertebrates, as it does in vertebrates. The AMG consists of visceral muscle and an epithelial tube. Our genetic analyses revealed that Wnt signaling in the visceral muscle but not the epithelium of the midgut is required for the AMG to develop its normal laterality. Furthermore, fz2 and Wnt4 were expressed in the visceral muscles of the midgut. Consistent with these results, we observed that the LR asymmetric rearrangement of the visceral muscle cells, the first visible asymmetry of the developing AMG, did not occur in embryos lacking Wnt4 expression. Our results also suggest that canonical Wnt/β-catenin signaling, but not non-canonical Wnt signaling, is responsible for the LR asymmetric development of the AMG. Canonical Wnt/β-catenin signaling is reported to have important roles in LR asymmetric development in zebrafish. Thus, the contribution of canonical Wnt/β-catenin signaling to LR asymmetric development may be an evolutionarily conserved feature between vertebrates and invertebrates.  相似文献

Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) represents small, random variation from symmetry and can be used as an indicator of plant susceptibility to herbivory. We investigated the effects of FA of two oak species, Quercus laevis and Q. geminata, and the responses of three herbivore guilds: leaf miners, gallers, and chewers. To examine differences in FA and herbivory between individuals, 40 leaves from each tree were collected, and FA indices were calculated. To examine differences in FA and herbivory within-individuals, we sampled pairs of mined and unmined leaves for asymmetry measurements. Differences in growth of leaf miners between leaf types were determined by tracing 50 mines of each species on symmetric leaves and asymmetric leaves. Asymmetric leaves contained significantly lower concentrations of tannins and higher concentrations of nitrogen than symmetric leaves for both plant species. Both frequency of asymmetric leaves on plants and levels of asymmetry positively influenced the abundance of Brachys, Stilbosis and other leaf miners, but no significant relationship between asymmetry and herbivory was observed for Acrocercops. Brachys and Stilbosis mines were smaller on asymmetric leaves, but differences in mine survivorship between symmetric and asymmetric leaves were observed only for Stilbosis mines. This study indicated that leaf miners might use leaf FA as a cue to plant quality, although differential survivorship among leaf types was not observed for all species studied. Reasons for the different results between guilds are discussed.  相似文献

While left-right (LR) asymmetric morphogenesis is common to various animal species, there have been no systematic studies of the LR asymmetry of body structures of Drosophila melanogaster. In the present paper the LR asymmetric development of the Drosophila gut is described, in which three major parts, the foregut, midgut and hindgut, show almost invariant LR asymmetry. The asymmetry is generated by a twist of each part in particular orientations, resulting in a left-handed (sinistral) convolution as a whole. The frequency of spontaneous reversal of LR orientations is very low (< 0.6%) and reversal of each part of the gut occurs independently. The bicoid mutation causes duplication of the posterior half of the gut, essentially keeping the left-handed twist, suggesting that the LR asymmetry may depend on some intrinsic nature of the cells or tissues rather than a graded distribution of morphogens in the egg. The handedness of particular gut parts was randomized or became symmetric in mutants of brachyenteron, huckebein and patched, suggesting that different gene pathways can interfere in determining LR asymmetry of the gut. It is noteworthy that all of these genes are expressed LR symmetrically.  相似文献

Individuals allocate resources to the expansion of their foraging area and those resources are no longer available for the traits that determine how well those individuals are able to protect their foraging area against competitors. The resulting trade‐off between foraging area size and the traits associated with the ability to compete for the resources within the foraging area applies to ecological scenarios as different as territorial defence by individuals and colonies, and light competition in plants. Whether the trade‐off affects species performance in competition for resources at the area of overlap between foraging areas depends on the symmetry of resource division. In symmetric competition resources are divided equally between the competitors, while in asymmetric competition the individual with the smallest foraging area, and consequently the greatest competitive ability, gains all the resources. Competition may also be a combination of the symmetric and asymmetric processes. I studied the effects of competitive asymmetry on population dynamics and coexistence of two annual species with different sized foraging areas using an individual‐based spatially explicit simulation model. Symmetric competition favoured the species with the larger foraging area and did not allow coexistence. Competitive asymmetry favoured the species with smaller foraging area and allowed coexistence, which was due to the consequences of losing an asymmetric competition being more severe than losing a symmetric competition. The mechanism of coexistence is the larger foraging area's superiority in low population densities (little competition) and the smaller foraging area's ability to win a large foraging area when competition was intense. Competitive asymmetry and small size of both foraging areas led to population dynamics dominated by long‐term fluctuations of small intensity. Symmetric competition and large size of the foraging areas led to large short‐term fluctuations, which often resulted in the extinction of one or both of the species due to demographic stochasticity.  相似文献

The gastrointestinal tract is an asymmetrically patterned organ system. The signals which initiate left‐right asymmetry in the developing embryo have been extensively studied, but the downstream steps required to confer asymmetric morphogenesis on the gut organ primordia are less well understood. In this paper we outline key findings on the tissue mechanics underlying gut asymmetry, across a range of species, and use these to synthesise a conserved model for asymmetric gut morphogenesis. We also discuss the importance of correct establishment of left‐right asymmetry for gut development and the consequences of perturbations in this process.  相似文献

Lipid asymmetry, the difference in inner and outer leaflet lipid composition, is an important feature of biomembranes. By utilizing our recently developed MβCD-catalyzed exchange method, the effect of lipid acyl chain structure upon the ability to form asymmetric membranes was investigated. Using this approach, SM was efficiently introduced into the outer leaflet of vesicles containing various phosphatidylcholines (PC), but whether the resulting vesicles were asymmetric (SM outside/PC inside) depended upon PC acyl chain structure. Vesicles exhibited asymmetry using PC with two monounsaturated chains of >14 carbons; PC with one saturated and one unsaturated chain; and PC with phytanoyl chains. Vesicles were most weakly asymmetric using PC with two 14 carbon monounsaturated chains or with two polyunsaturated chains. To define the origin of this behavior, transverse diffusion (flip-flop) of lipids in vesicles containing various PCs was compared. A correlation between asymmetry and transverse diffusion was observed, with slower transverse diffusion in vesicles containing PCs that supported lipid asymmetry. Thus, asymmetric vesicles can be prepared using a wide range of acyl chain structures, but fast transverse diffusion destroys lipid asymmetry. These properties may constrain acyl chain structure in asymmetric natural membranes to avoid short or overly polyunsaturated acyl chains.  相似文献

This paper presents an asymmetric game-theoretical model to the following type of animal conflicts: a member of a group is at risk and needs the help of another member to be saved. As long as assistance is not provided, this individual has a positive, time-dependent rate of dying. Assisting the individual which is at risk accrues a cost, but losing it decreases each member's inclusive fitness. A potential helper's interval between the moment a group member gets into trouble and the moment it assists is a random variable, hence its strategy is to choose the distribution of this random variable. In the asymmetric conflict all the potential helpers have identical strategy sets, but each plays a different role. For example, male or female and young or old. We consider both payoff-irrelevant asymmetry and payoff-relevant asymmetry and characterize each role's stable replies. The evolutionarily stable strategies (ESS) are computed, and the model is applied to the n brothers' problem. According to our results immediate assistance and no assistance are possible ESS both under payoff-relevant asymmetry and under payoff-relevant asymmetry.  相似文献

Fluctuating asymmetry in male ornaments may be related to male quality and therefore may be used by females as a guide in mate choice. Experiments on different species have shown female preferences for symmetry, but few previous studies have addressed preferences for symmetry in coloration. Using the bluethroat,Luscinia s. svecicaa passerine with a conspicuous blue and chestnut throat patch, as a model species, we devised an experiment in which the females could choose between males with either symmetric or asymmetric coloured leg bands. The females associated more with symmetric than asymmetric males, indicating a preference for symmetry.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to test the assumption that asymmetric trunk loading requires a higher total muscle force and consequently entails a higher compression forces on the spine as compared to symmetric loading. When the trunk musculature is modelled in sufficient detail, optimisation shows that there is no mechanical necessity for an increase in total muscle force (or compression force) with task asymmetry. A physiologically based optimisation does also not predict an increase in total muscle force or spinal loading with asymmetry. EMG data on 14 trunk muscles collected in eight subjects showed antagonistic coactivity to be present in both conditions. However, estimates of total muscle force based on the EMG were lower when producing an asymmetric moment. In conclusion, producing an asymmetric moment appears to cause slightly lower forces on the lumbosacral joint as compared to a symmetric moment. Only lateral shear forces increase with asymmetry but these remain well below failure levels.  相似文献

Summary The asymmetric current-voltage relationship of gramicidin-doped asymmetric bilayers made by the Montal-Mueller technique was investigated in current relaxation experiments. It was shown that, in addition to the contribution of the asymmetric single channel conductance to the asymmetry of the steady-state current-voltage relationship, there is an asymmetric voltage dependence of the step which leads to the formation of the conducting channel. This asymmetric voltage dependence could be simulated in a model assuming a membrane-internal electrical potential drop or an equivalent potential, called asymmetry potential, which could be compensated by externally applying an offset potential. Significant asymmetry potentials were found in asymmetric bilayers made of charged lipids or only of neutral lipids. The asymmetry potential, was dependent on the salt composition in the aqueous phase. The factors responsible for the asymmetry potential do not appear to be of electrostatic origin. Several lines of evidence suggest that the dimerization step which leads to the conducting ion channel may be a complex series of reactions which are influenced by one or more membrane structural properties not yet characterized, in addition to the effects of the externally applied electric field.  相似文献

Individual symmetry is believed to be advantageous and reflecting developmental stability, but frequency‐dependent selection can also maintain polymorphisms of asymmetric phenotypes. There are many examples of so‐called antisymmetry, where mirror image morphs occur at equal frequencies. With very few exceptions, these are caused by nongenetic variation. One notable exception is handedness and mouth bending variation in the scale‐eating cichlid Perissodus microlepis, which has been suggested to be an example of antisymmetry determined by a single genetic locus of large effect. Here, we report that this handedness and mouth bending asymmetry are not jointly and exclusively determined by a single major locus. We found no evidence of a major locus for asymmetry and some support for a major handedness locus. Also, asymmetry is plastic in this species: it can change in adults. We suggest that behavioral handedness in this system precedes and guides morphological asymmetry.  相似文献

We are studying the development of handedness, in particular the relationships between handed structures with bilateral symmetry, for example the limbs, and those with lateral asymmetry, such as the heart, lungs and gut. Asymmetric (unilateral) developmental limb abnormalities can be induced by chemical treatment of mouse embryos, either in utero by acetazolamide, or in culture by misonidazole. We have examined these effects in mice homozygous for the iv gene. The development of bilateral symmetry in iv/iv mice is normal, but the control of asymmetry appears to be random, that is 50% develop normally (situs solitus), 50% with laterally inverted viscera (situs inversus). We find that the handedness of induced asymmetric limb defects is highly correlated with embryonic visceral situs. Right limb defects are induced in situs solitus embryos, left-sided defects in situs inversus. This suggests that the mechanism of induction of asymmetric defects is not related to any intrinsic difference between the development of left and right limbs, but is connected to visceral asymmetry. In addition, the high correlation of limb defects with situs was observed in culture as well as in utero suggesting that the maternal environment plays no role in the development of asymmetry.  相似文献

We studied asymmetric variation of the mandible in the Central European portion of the hybrid zone between two house mouse subspecies, Mus musculus musculus and Mus musculus domesticus. Within introgression classes, defined by the share of diagnostic allozymes, we quantified the directional and fluctuating component of asymmetric variation, as well as skewness and kurtosis of individual asymmetry distributions. Furthermore, in the same manner we re‐analysed asymmetric variation of the ventral side of the skull. According to the quadratic polynomial model, the mandible shape‐fluctuating asymmetry, but not size‐fluctuating asymmetry, was significantly decreased in the centre of the hybrid zone (with a minimum predicted for a hybrid index of 0.41). On the contrary, the skull shape‐fluctuating asymmetry non‐monotonically increased towards the musculus side of the hybrid zone (with a peak predicted for a hybrid index of 0.86). Thus, the impact of hybridization on fluctuating asymmetry is trait‐specific in this portion of the house mouse hybrid zone. The only general feature of asymmetric variation we observed was the shift towards the platykurtosis of asymmetry distributions in the centre of the hybrid zone. Taken together, we suggest genetic variability for right–left asymmetries to be generally increased, but the developmental instability of mandible shape to be decreased, by hybridization. We hypothesize the decrease of developmental instability to be caused by overdominant effects on developmental dynamics rather than by increased heterozygosity. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 101 , 13–27.  相似文献

I investigated the relationships among developmental stability(as measured by individual bilateral asymmetry values), twomeasures of locomotory performance and predation success inan insect predator-prey system. In this system yellow dungfliesScathophaga stercoraria preyed upon houseflies Musca domesticainlaboratory-controlled conditions. There was no relationshipbetween locomotion and absolute asymmetry or mean size of twomorphological traits (fourth longitudinal wing vein, forelegtibia) in either species. Analysis of single predation trialsindicated that locomotion performance and trait size are notassociated with the probability of predation. However, Muscathat were captured had tibia that were more asymmetric thanMusca that survived. Similarly, Scathophaga that were successfulpredators had more symmetric forelegs than unsuccessful predators. There was no relationship between predation and wing vein asymmetry, which may indicate the importance of terrestrial-based predatoryavoidance tactics in this system. There were no relationshipsbetween morphology or locomotion with predation latency, preyhandling times, or the number of times a prey "escaped" froma predator. The mechanisms behind the relationship between tibiaasymmetry and predation success are discussed. This is the firstexperiment to reveal direct evidence for selection for symmetric, developmentally stable individuals through differential predation  相似文献

Aging has been demonstrated in unicellular organisms and is presumably due to asymmetric distribution of damaged proteins and other components during cell division. Whether the asymmetry-induced aging is inevitable or an adaptive and adaptable response is debated. Although asymmetric division leads to aging and death of some cells, it increases the effective growth rate of the population as shown by theoretical and empirical studies. Mathematical models predict on the other hand, that if the cells divide symmetrically, cellular aging may be delayed or absent, growth rate will be reduced but growth yield will increase at optimum repair rates. Therefore in nutritionally dilute (oligotrophic) environments, where growth yield may be more critical for survival, symmetric division may get selected. These predictions have not been empirically tested so far. We report here that Escherichia coli grown in oligotrophic environments had greater morphological and functional symmetry in cell division. Both phenotypic plasticity and genetic selection appeared to shape cell division time asymmetry but plasticity was lost on prolonged selection. Lineages selected on high nutrient concentration showed greater frequency of presumably old or dead cells. Further, there was a negative correlation between cell division time asymmetry and growth yield but there was no significant correlation between asymmetry and growth rate. The results suggest that cellular aging driven by asymmetric division may not be hardwired but shows substantial plasticity as well as evolvability in response to the nutritional environment.  相似文献
