Protoparmelia hypotremellavan Herk, Spier & Wirth, a sterile corticolous lichen, is described as a species new to science, so far known from Austria, SW Germany and the Netherlands. It is rapidly spreading in Germany and the Netherlands. It is apparently close toP. oleagina, and is often found growing together with that species on oak trees along roads in the Netherlands. Both species are host to the lichenicolous fungiSphinctrina anglicaandTremella wirthii.  相似文献

In a leaf flavonoid investigation of all species and one hybrid of Fuchsia sect. Skinnera flavonol glycosides were found in all except F. procumbens and F. perscandens. Flavone glycosides and their sulphates previously characterized in F. excorticata, F. procumbens and their hybrid were found additionally in F. perscandens and F. colensoi but were absent from F. cyrtandroides. However, the rare Fuchsia constituents diosmetin 7-glucuronide and eriodictyol 7-glucoside were identified only in F. excorticata, F. excorticata x F. procumbens and F. colensoi, supporting the suggestion that the latter species is of hybrid origin with F. excorticata as one of the parents. The chemical evidence also indicates that sect. Skinnera is monophyletic with the Tahitian F. cyrtandroides, a sister species to a clade incorporating all the New Zealand species and thus not necessarily derived from a New Zealand ancestor.  相似文献

Esca disease of grapevine is a complex trunk disease consisting of several symptoms, one of which, white rot, has been found to be caused by various basidiomycetes within the order Hymenochaetales. During recent surveys of esca-related pathogens in South African vineyards, several unidentified basidiomycetes were isolated from white rot occurring in diseased vines. A new Fomitiporia species, F. capensis, is described based on fruit body morphology and combined internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and large-subunit (LSU) phylogeny, where it forms a clearly delineated and well-supported clade. Morphologically, F. capensis is similar to F. punctata in that both species essentially lack setae. Fomitiporia capensis, F. punctata and F. aethiopica produce similarly sized basidiospores but differ in terms of host range, pore size and, possibly, fruit body shape. Phylogenetically, F. capensis appears to be related to F. tenuis, though morphologically, the species differ significantly in that F. tenuis has smaller pores and smaller basidiospores. Fomitiporia capensis was found to occur widely as vegetative mycelium throughout the Western Cape Province, though fruit bodies were scarce in comparison. A vineyard with fruit bodies was also found in Limpopo in the north east of the country. Fruit bodies were found growing on the underside of the cordon of living vines displaying external symptoms typically associated with esca, or general decline and dieback symptoms together with internal white rot.  相似文献

Bacidia neosquamulosaAptroot & van Herk, a new corticolous lichen species, is described from the Netherlands, where it seems to be rapidly spreading and where it is considered to be a neophytic species. It is also reported from Belgium and Great Britain. It resembles corticolous morphs of the rather variableB. arnoldiana, but differs from this and other species by the longer, conspicuously septate, filiform, curved, macroconidia, the longer ascospores and the squamulose-isidiate thallus.  相似文献

Interspecific hybridisation and gene flow from cultivated plants may have profound effects on the evolution of wild species. Considering the cultural history and past use of Ulmus minor and Ulmus glabra trees in Flanders (northern Belgium), we investigated the extent of human impact on the genetic variation of the remaining, supposedly indigenous elm populations. We therefore examined the rate of interspecific hybridisation, which is expected to be higher under human influence, the occurrence of clones within and among locations, the presence of cultivars and their possible offspring. Based on results produced using 385 amplified fragment length polymorphic (AFLP) markers, 46 % of the 106 investigated Flemish elms appeared to be F1 hybrids or backcrosses to one of the parent species, while no F2 hybrids (F1?×?F1 progeny) were found. Clonality was mainly found among U. minor and hybrids, which are more likely to form root suckers or sprouts as opposed to U. glabra. The majority of the studied locations (76 % of the locations with multiple samples) showed evidence of clonal reproduction. Several, sometimes distant, locations shared a multilocus lineage. We also found indications of gene flow from cultivated elms into native species. It is conceivable that reproductive material has been moved around extensively, obscuring the natural genetic structure of the elm populations. The results help guide the Flemish elm genetic resources conservation programme.  相似文献

The European sheet-web spider Linyphia triangularis (Araneae: Linyphiidae) has become established in Maine, where it often reaches very high densities. Two lines of evidence from previous work suggest that L. triangularis affects populations of the native linyphiid spider Frontinella communis. First, F. communis individuals are relatively scarce in both forest and coastal habitat where L. triangularis is common, but more common where L. triangularis is at low density. Second, in field experiments, F. communis species are less likely to settle in experimental plots when L. triangularis is present, and F. communis disappears from study plots when L. triangularis is introduced. Here we test two mechanisms that may underlie these patterns. First, we tested whether L. triangularis invades and usurps the webs of F. communis. When spiders were released onto webs of heterospecifics, L. triangularis was more likely to take over or share webs of F. communis than the reverse. We also observed natural takeovers of F. communis webs. Second, we explored the hypothesis that L. triangularis reduces prey availability for native species. We sampled flying prey in areas with L. triangularis and those where it had been removed, and found no effect of spider presence on measured prey density. We also found no effect of prey supplementation on web tenacity in F. communis, suggesting that F. communis movements are not highly dependent on prey availability. We conclude that web takeover is likely more important than prey reduction in driving negative effects of L. triangularis on F. communis.  相似文献

The oral opportunistic pathogen Fusobacterium nucleatum is known to interact with a large number of different bacterial species residing in the oral cavity. It adheres to a variety of Gram-positive bacteria, including oral streptococci via the arginine-inhibitable adhesin RadD. In this study, we describe a novel protein encoded by the predicted open reading frame FN1253 that appears to play a role in interspecies interactions of F. nucleatum, particularly with oral streptococci and related Gram-positive species. We designated FN1253 as aid1 (Adherence Inducing Determinant 1). Expression analyses demonstrated that this gene was induced in F. nucleatum single species biofilms, while the presence of representative members of the oral microbiota known to adhere to F. nucleatum triggered its suppression. Inactivation as well as overexpression of aid1 affected the ability of F. nucleatum to coaggregate with oral streptococci and the closely related Enterococcus faecalis, but not other Gram-positive oral species tested. Furthermore, overexpression of aid1 led to a drastic change in the structure of dual species biofilms of F. nucleatum with oral streptococci. Aid1 function was abolished in the presence of arginine and found to be dependent on RadD. Interestingly, differential expression of aid1 did not affect messenger RNA and protein levels of RadD. These findings indicate that RadD-mediated adhesion to oral streptococci involves more complex cellular processes than the simple interaction of adhesins on the surface of partner strains. Aid1 could potentially play an important role in facilitating RadD-mediated interaction with oral streptococci by increasing binding specificity of F. nucleatum to other microbial species.  相似文献

In a leaf flavonoid analysis of six Fuchsia species and seven Fuchsia hybrids, flavonols were found to be abundant in all taxa except F. procumbens. Flavone glycosides were found in only three species: luteolin 7-glucoside in F. splendens; and luteolin and apigenin 7-glucuronides and 7-glucuronidesulphates, tricin 7-glucuronidesulphate and diosmetin 7-glucuronide from one or both of the New Zealand species F. procumbens and F. excorticata. Luteolin 7- glucuronidesulphate is reported for the first time. Other less common phenolics identified include the flavanone, eriodictyol 7-glucoside from F. excorticata, a galloylglucose from F. triphylla, and a galloylglucosesulphate present in all taxa. Eight of the flavonoid glycosides proved useful as marker substances for particular Fuchsia species: quercetin 3- rhamnoside, 3-glucuronide and 3-rutinoside for F.fulgens; quercetin and kaempferol 3-galactosides for F. boliviana var. luxurians; diosmetin 7-glucuronide for F. excorticata and apigenin 7-glucuronide and 7-glucuronidesulphate for F. procumbens. The chemical results on the hybrids support the view that the cultivar ‘Mary’ is a hybrid of F. boliviana var. luxurians and F. triphylla and that both F.fulgens and F. triphylla are involved as parents of the cultivars ‘Koralle’ and ‘Traudchen Bondstedt’.  相似文献

The importance of leaf anatomical characters in the taxonomy of Ugandan Festuca species was investigated. In particular, leaf cross sections were studied for variation in disposition of the sclerenchyma tissue to determine whether this is as taxonomically useful as is implied in much of the literature. Also the leaf epidermis was investigated for the presence of diagnostic features. A lot of variation in disposition of sclerenchyma tissue was found in F. abyssinica, which did not support the recognition of F. elgonensis and F. richardii as good species, yet they were described mainly based on leaf anatomy. The ring of sclerenchyma in F. pilgeri and the presence of papillae on the epidermis of F. claytonii supported them to be good species. The presence of silica bodies on the epidermis of Ugandan species of Festuca was investigated for the first time and is confirmed using energy dispersive X-ray analysis. In conclusion, leaf anatomy should be used together with other non-anatomical characters before recognizing species.  相似文献

Hybridization has the potential to contribute to phenotypic and genetic variation and can be a major evolutionary mechanism. However, when hybridization is extensive it can also lead to the blurring of species boundaries and the emergence of cryptic species (i.e., two or more species not distinguishable morphologically). In this study, we address this hypothesis in Epidendrum, the largest Neotropical genus of orchids where hybridization is apparently so common that it may explain the high levels of morphological diversity found. Nonetheless, this hypothesis is mostly based on the intermediacy of morphological characters and intermediacy by itself is not a proof of hybridization. Therefore, in this study, we first assessed the existence of hybrids using cpDNA and AFLP data gathered from a large-scale sampling comprising 1038 plants of three species of Epidendrum (E. calanthum, E. cochlidium and E. schistochilum). Subsequently, a Bayesian assignment of individuals into different genetic classes (pure species, F1, F2 or backcross generations) revealed that hybrid genotypes were prevalent in all sympatric populations. In most cases, parental species were not assigned as pure individuals, rather consisting in backcrossed genotypes or F1 hybrids. We also found that reproductive barriers are apparently very weak in Epidendrum because the three species largely overlapped in their flowering periods and interspecific crosses always produced viable seeds. Further, hybridization contributed to enhance floral variability, genome size and reproductive success since we found that these traits were always higher in hybrid classes (F1, F2 and backcrosses) than in pure parental species, and offer an explanation for the blurring of species boundaries in this genus of orchids. We hypothesize that these natural hybrids possess an evolutionary advantage, which may explain the high rates of cryptic species observed in this genus.  相似文献

The floristic composition and distribution of mature plants, seedlings, and soil-seed material in both ant territories and territory borders between colonies of two ant species, Lasius fuliginosus and Formica polyctena, were compared in a deciduous forest in central Ukraine. Additional seed samples were taken from ant nests. Workers of both species collect seeds of myrmecochores, but only individuals of F. polyctena relocate seeds to territory borders after the removal of elaiosomes. Borders of F. polyctena territories are thus ‘garbage dumps’ of waste organic material and probably also nutrient-enriched microsites. The floristic composition of L. fuliginosus’ territory differed from that of the territory borders and F. polyctena territory owing to a lower abundance of myrmecochores in the former. There were no great differences in the abundance or in the number of species (altogether fourteen species) in mature myrmecochores or non-myrmecochores among the sampling sites. However, the abundance and to some extent the number of species (altogether 21 species) of seedlings of myrmecochores (but not of non-myrmecochores) were lower in L. fuliginosus territory than in the other sampling sites. In particular, seedlings of two large-seeded myrmecochores, Asarum europaeum and Viola odorata, were more abundant in territory borders than in the territories. With a small-seeded myrmecochore, Ballota nigra, no such differences were found. Seeds of large-seeded myrmecochores, small-seeded myrmecochores and non-myrmecochores were more abundant than expected in the territory borders, in the nest of L. fuliginosus, in the nest of F. polyctena, respectively. It is suggested that seed flow from F. polyctena nests to the territory borders results in an increase in the seed-dispersal distances from the parent plant and among seeds dispersed in both small- and large-seeded myrmecochores. In large-seeded myrmecochores, this also results in a higher likelihood of reaching ‘garbage dumps’. The influence of ant behaviour on plant seed flow with different seed-dispersal strategies are discussed.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the diversity and prevalence of Fusarium species in a survey of cereal and grassland systems from the South Island of New Zealand by applying morphological and molecular techniques. Isolates were collected from soil, roots, and stems from 21 cereal and grassland sites. Ten Fusarium species were identified using morphological characters, including F. acuminatum, F. avenaceum, F. crookwellense, F. culmorum, F. equiseti, F. oxysporum, F. poae, F. pseudograminearum, F. sambucinum, and F. tricinctum. In general, their distribution was found to be unrelated to biogeographical location, although agricultural practice increased the overall diversity of Fusarium. Phylogenetic analyses were successfully used to identify morphologically similar isolates belonging to the F. avenaceum/F. acuminatum/F. tricinctum species complex and to resolve previously undetermined relationships amongst these species. Fifty-eight isolates classified as either F. avenaceum, F. acuminatum, or other closely related species as well as several well-characterised isolates from international culture collections were examined using DNA sequence data for β-tubulin (βTUB), translation elongation factor 1α (EF1α), and mitochondrial small subunit ribosomal RNA (mtSSU). Analyses of DNA sequence data from both βTUB and EF1α discriminated among isolates of F. avenaceum, F. acuminatum, and F. tricinctum and determined that these three distinct sequence groups formed a single clade. By contrast, mtSSU was unable to differentiate F. avenaceum from F. acuminatum and other closely related species believed to be F. tricinctum. Comparison of the EF1α sequences with the international FUSARIUM-ID database supported the identification of isolates in this study. As in other studies, F. avenaceum was found to be widespread in agricultural and native ecosystems. However, F. acuminatum in New Zealand was found only on non-wheat hosts. The reason for the absence of this wheat pathogen in cereal-based ecosystems in New Zealand remains unknown.  相似文献

Pineapple (Ananas comosus var. comosus) is an important perennial crop in tropical and subtropical areas. It may be infected by various Fusarium species, contaminating the plant material with mycotoxins. The aim of this study was to evaluate Fusarium species variability among the genotypes isolated from pineapple fruits displaying fungal infection symptoms and to evaluate their mycotoxigenic abilities. Forty-four isolates of ten Fusarium species were obtained from pineapple fruit samples: F. ananatum, F. concentricum, F. fujikuroi, F. guttiforme, F. incarnatum, F. oxysporum, F. polyphialidicum, F. proliferatum, F. temperatum and F. verticillioides. Fumonisins B1–B3, beauvericin (BEA) and moniliformin (MON) contents were quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in pineapple fruit tissue. Fumonisins are likely the most dangerous metabolites present in fruit samples (the maximum FB1 content was 250 μg g?1 in pineapple skin and 20 μg ml?1 in juice fraction). In both fractions, BEA and MON were of minor significance. FUM1 and FUM8 genes were identified in F. fujikuroi, F. proliferatum, F. temperatum and F. verticillioides. Cyclic peptide synthase gene (esyn1 homologue) from the BEA biosynthetic pathway was identified in 40 isolates of eight species. Based on the gene-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays, none of the isolates tested were found to be able to produce trichothecenes or zearalenone.  相似文献

Forty-six volatile compounds were identified in the secretions from Dufour's gland of worker ants of the species Formica nigricans, F. rufa, and F. polyctena using combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and capillary gas chromatography. In both methods the natural volatile material has been driven off excised glands using a precolumn technique.The composition of the secretions from the three species are very similar but there are also some distinct differences, especially between F. nigricans on the one hand and F. rufa and F. polyctena on the other. Straight-chain, saturated hydrocarbons are the quantitatively dominating compounds, with undecane as the largest individual component, followed by tridecane, pentadecane, and heptadecane. Straight-chain, monounsaturated hydrocarbons and methyl-branched, saturated hydrocarbons are also present and a few straight-chain, doubly unsaturated hydrocarbons are present in trace amounts.In the region of lower volatility two isoprenoids identified as all-trans-geranylgeraniol and the corresponding acetate all-trans-geranylgeranyl acetate, have been found together with octadecyl acetate. The relative amounts between these compounds are the main difference between the secretions from the three species. Octadecyl acetate is thus present only in trace amounts in the secretion of F. nigricans.In addition to the compounds mentioned a few aliphatic acetates and alcohols present in small amounts have been identified.The secretions are thought to have many functions which are reflected in their complex composition. This is discussed in comparison with results from other formicine ants. The species specificity in the composition of the secretion from Dufour's gland and the taxonomic value of this specificity are also discussed.  相似文献

The synthesis of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) in the enzyme extracts of Nicotiana glauca, Nicotiana langsdorffii, their F1 hybrid, their amphidiploid hybrid, and the nontumorous mutant of the hybrid was investigated. Tryptamine, a possible precursor of IAA biosynthesis in Nicotiana tabacum, was not found in the callus tissue of N. glauca, N. langsdorffii, and their F1 hybrid.

In petiole slices, the synthesis of IAA progressively increased during 5 hours of incubation in [14C]tryptophan. The rate of synthesis was about equal in the hybrid and N. langsdorffii but lower in N. glauca on either a cell or fresh weight basis. It was also found that tryptophan was about 25 times more efficient than tryptamine in promoting synthesis of IAA in petiole slices.

It was found that indoleacetaldehyde oxidase, indoleacetaldehyde reductase, and tryptophan aminotransferase activities were present in all of the species examined; however, tryptophan decarboxylase activity was not found. The tryptophan aminotransferase activity in N. glauca, N. langsdorffii, and the nontumorous mutant required α-ketoglutaric acid and pyridoxal 5-phosphate whereas the addition of pyridoxal 5-phosphate seemed not to increase the enzyme activity in tumor plants.

The tryptophan aminotransferase in the amphidiploid hybrid was partially purified by acetone precipitation. The enzyme activity had a temperature optimum at 49 C and a pH optimum at 8.9. It is suggested that there is an indolepyruvic acid pathway in the synthesis of IAA in the Nicotiana species examined.

Understanding habitat requirements of species is important in conservation. As an obligate ant nest associate, the survival of the globally vulnerable shining guest ant, Formicoxenus nitidulus, is strictly tied to that of its hosts (mound building Formica ants). We investigated how host species, nest density, inter-nest distance and nest mound size relate to the occurrence of F. nitidulus. In total, 166 red wood ant nests were surveyed in SW Finland (120 Formica polyctena, 25 F. rufa, 14 F. aquilonia, 5 F. pratensis, and 2 F. lugubris). Overall, F. nitidulus was found in 60% of the nests. For the actual analysis, only F. polyctena and F. rufa nests were included due to the small number of other nests. F. nitidulus was more likely to be found among F. polyctena than F. rufa. Also, while inter-nest distance was not important, a high nest density, commonly found in polydomous (multi-nest) wood ant colonies, was beneficial for F. nitidulus. The guest ant was also more likely to be found in large host nests than small nests. Thus, our results show that the best habitat for the guest ant is a dense population of host nest mounds with a high proportion of large mounds. Conservation efforts should be directed at keeping the quality of the red wood ant habitats high to preserve their current populations and to increase colonization. This will not only benefit the guest ant, but also a plethora of other species, and help in maintaining the biodiversity of forests.  相似文献

The impact of agriculture on wood ants of the Formica rufa group was investigated in a small-scale agricultural landscape with many woodland fragments in the east of the Netherlands. An inventory of nests was carried out in 1986, and repeated in 2014. The number of nests of F. rufa and F. polyctena had drastically decreased during the intervening 28 years, especially in small patches of woodland bordering a maize field. The species F. rufa, which mainly disperses by flight of the queen, seems to be better adapted to habitat fragmentation than F. polyctena, where dispersal is mainly by colony splitting. However, the flying strategy can only be successful in a landscape where most woodland fragments have a good quality habitat; in the study area, the habitat quality had deteriorated. This is ascribed to the development of a tall, nitrophilous vegetation, a result of considerable nitrogen deposition from the atmosphere and the spraying of manure. The regional survival of wood ants in the east of the Netherlands is at risk in the agricultural landscapes we studied. This is due to the increasing probability of colonies becoming extinct and the decreased probability of a queen colonizing habitat patches. However, the negative influence of agriculture on the edge vegetation of patches of woodland can be decreased by leaving a wide strip between the arable land and the woodland that receives no manure.  相似文献

The morphology and the anatomy of the 13 species presently included in the genusFulgensiawere surveyed.Caloplaca aureaandC. paulii, two species regarded as closely related toFulgensiaby earlier authors, were also included in the study.Fulgensiawas found to exhibit a great variation in both morphology and anatomy. The differences in size, shape and septation of the spores, in the anatomy of cortex and exciple, and in the gross morphology, will presumably motivate a different taxonomic treatment in the future. A tentative separation of the species into four different groups is proposed here. Group A comprisesF. australisandF. chanousiae, which appear close to species inCaloplacasect.Gasparrinia.Groups B and C, each comprises one species,F. schistidiiandF. canariensisrespectively and group D comprises the remaining nine species, including the type speciesF. fulgens. The last group may be further split by a more detailed investigation. The present separation ofFulgensiainto two subgenera cannot be regarded as taxonomically sound. The genus is probably polyphyletic and the different groups are probably related to different groups within the large genusCaloplaca.  相似文献
