Egg maturation and oosorption in Gonatocerus ashmeadi were investigated in the laboratory and the relationship between hind tibia length (HTL) and <12 h egg load, and wing wear and parasitoid age were determined. G. ashmeadi given access to honey-water and hosts, on average, matured 77 eggs in excess of those they were born with. The number of mature eggs in female G. ashmeadi provided honey-water with no hosts significantly declined after 163 degree-days eggs, while the number of ‘dissolved’ eggs (partially disintegrated mature eggs) increased by nine eggs after 163 degree-days. These results are consistent with oosorption. There was a significant positive correlation between HTL and <12 h egg load. The ovigeny index (the number of mature eggs at female emergence divided by potential lifetime fecundity) for G. ashmeadi was calculated as 0.22 indicating that this parasitoid is a syn-ovigenic species when studied under laboratory conditions. There was a significant positive correlation between wing wear (measured as the number of broken setae per wing) and parasitoid age in the laboratory. The practical implications of these results for G. ashmeadi on the biological control of Homalodisca vitripennis are discussed.  相似文献

When females ofTrichogramma pretiosum Riley were confined with host eggs at a density of 2/150 eggs, they produced 12 times more female progeny on eggs of potato tuber moth than on eggs ofHeliothis armigera (Hübner) and 13,6 times more on eggs ofSitotroga cerealella (Olivier) than on eggs ofHeliothis. At a density of 4/150 eggs, the correspondent figures were 13 and 8 times. The percentage emergence fromHeliothis eggs was from 0,29 to 0,14 times as great as from tuber moth orSitotroga. From 15 to 140 times more runts were observed amongTrichogramma fromHeliothis eggs than among those from tuber moth eggs and 8 times more thant among those fromSitotroga eggs. This may explain the low recoveries in South Africa ofT. pretiosum in eggs ofH. armigera collected in cotton fields after mass liberation of the parasite. An increase in parasite density from 1/300 eggs to 16/300 eggs resulted in a decrease from 29 to 14 in the hosts parasitised per female, a decrease in the proportion of female progeny from 72 to 39%, a decrease in the female progeny per female from 18 to 4,8, and an increase in the proportion of runts from 2,4 to 12,4%. It is suggested that in mass culture ofTrichogramma unduly high parasite densities should be avoided in order to reduce the effect of mutual interference and raise the output of female progeny.  相似文献

It is unexplained how strepsipteran insects manipulate the physiology of their hosts in order to undergo endoparasitic development without being entrapped by the innate immune defences of the host. Here we present pioneering work that aimed to explore for the first time several components of the cellular and humoral immune response among immature stages of the paper wasp Polistes dominulus, in both unparasitized insects and after infection by the strepsipteran endoparasite Xenos vesparum. We carried out hemocyte counts, phagocytosis assays in vitro and antibacterial response in vivo. On the whole, hemocyte load does not seem to be drastically affected by parasitization: a non-significant increase in hemocyte numbers was observed in parasitized wasps as respect to control, while the two dominant hemocyte types were present with similar proportions in both groups. On the other hand, phagocytosis was significantly reduced in hemocytes from parasitized wasps while the antibacterial response seemed to be less effective in control. These somewhat unexpected results are discussed, along with the implications of a multiple approach in immune response studies.  相似文献

Aedes aegypti infected with Dirofilaria immitis and uninfected mosquitoes were maintained on various carbohydrate diets (glucose, galactose, fructose, sucrose, trehalose, maltose, and melibiose). The value of each of these sugars in supporting survival of adult A. aegypti, and in supporting egg production, viability of eggs, and development of third-stage larvae of D. immitis in A. aegypti was analyzed. Fructose, glucose, maltose, sucrose, and trehalose provided the strongest support for survival of adult male, and infected and uninfected adult female A. aegypti. Galactose and melibiose provided the least support for survival of all groups of mosquitoes. The mean number of eggs laid per uninfected adult female A. aegypti was greatest when mosquitoes were maintained on glucose, melibiose, maltose, fructose, sucrose, and trehalose. The same was true for female mosquitoes infected with D. immitis; except for melibiose which provided poor support for egg production. In both Dirofilaria-infected and in uninfected mosquitoes, galactose supported the production of low mean numbers of eggs per adult female A. aegypti. High percentages of eggs laid by uninfected and by infected female mosquitoes fed glucose, melibiose, maltose, sucrose, and trehalose hatched. While galactose supported a high percentage of hatching in eggs laid by uninfected A. aegypti, a much lower percentage of eggs laid by infected female mosquitoes maintained on this same carbohydrate hatched. The lowest percentages of eggs that hatched were from among those laid by infected and by uninfected females fed fructose. The highest mean number of D. immitis larvae (L3) were recovered from adult A. aegypti fed glucose, maltose, fructose, and sucrose; the second best sugar in this regard was trehalose. The lowest mean number of D. immitis larvae were isolated from female A. aegypti fed galactose and melibiose.  相似文献

The comparative spermatology of 4 strepsipteran species, namely, Xenos moutoni De Buysson, Elenchus tenuicornis (Kirby), Elenchus japonicus Esaki and Hashimoto and Halictophagus chilensis Hofmann, have been studied by transmission electron microscopy. The spermatozoon of all 4 species examined were seen to have: an elongated head characterized by a nucleus with an internal channel of uncondensed chromatin, a one-layered acrosome, and a tail containing a 9 + 9 + 2 axoneme and 2 partially crystallized mitochondrial derivatives. Each sperm, nevertheless, shows a few peculiarities that confirm the taxonomic value of comparative spermatology. In addition, the strepsipteran spermatozoa were seen to have a different organization to that of Pelecotoma fennica Pewkull (Rhipiphoridae, Pelecotominae), which has the typical structure of a coleopteran sperm. It was characterized by a 3-layered acrosomal complex, a tail with a 9 + 9 + 2 axoneme flanked by 2 accessory bodies and 2 mitochondrial derivatives. From the spermatological point of view, primitive Coleoptera cannot be considered to be closely related to Strepsiptera.  相似文献

Thoracic structures of the extremely small first instar larva of the strepsipteran species Mengenilla chobauti (ca. 200 μm) were examined, described and reconstructed 3-dimensionally. The focus is on the skeletomuscular system. The characters were compared to conditions found in other insect larvae of very small (Ptiliidae) or large (Dytiscus) size (both Coleoptera) and features of “triungulin” larvae, first instar larvae of Rhipiphoridae, Meloidae (both Coleoptera), and Mantispidae (Neuroptera). The specific lifestyle and the extreme degree of miniaturisation result in numerous thoracic modifications. Many sclerites of the exo- and endoskeleton are reduced. Cervical sclerites, pleural ridges, furcae and spinae are absent. Most of the longitudinal muscles are connected within the thorax, and a pair of ventral longitudinal muscles is present in the pleural region of the meso- and metathorax. This results in a high intersegmental flexibility. Due to the size reduction and the correlated shift of the brain to the thorax, with 94 identified muscles the thoracic musculature appears highly compact. Compared to larger larvae the number of both the individual muscles and the muscle bundles are distinctly reduced. The thorax of the first instar larvae displays many additional strepsipteran autapomorphies. At least partly due to the highly specialised condition, potential synapomorphies with other groups were not found.  相似文献

The striped stem borer, Chilo suppressalis (Walker), is one of the most economically important rice pests worldwide. However, biological control of this pest using natural-enemy insects has been rarely documented to date. With the objective of screening suitable candidate species for controlling the striped stem borer, we investigated the effect of the age of host eggs on the host selection and suitability by four indigenous Trichogramma species on their native host, C. suppressalis. The results indicated that the differently aged eggs of C. suppressalis were all accepted by T. japonicum, T. dendrolimi and T. chilonis, and there was a clear tendency to parasitize older eggs less under no-choice and choice conditions. The number of parasitized host eggs by T. ostriniae also decreased with the increasing host age in the no-choice test, but more 2-day-old host eggs were parasitized in the choice test. When 0-, 2-day-old eggs were offered, T. dendrolimi, T. japonicum and T. chilonis exhibited similar parasitism ability, whereas T. ostriniae appeared to have a stronger ability to attack the older host eggs (4-day-old). Trichogramma japonicum developed and emerged on parasitized C. suppressalis eggs of all ages tested, while showing a better adaptation to younger host eggs with significantly faster developmental time, higher survival and more female progeny on 0-day-old eggs. No adults for each of the other three Trichogramma species emerged from parasitized 4-day-old host eggs, and they had similar developmental time, survival and female progeny on parasitized 0-, 2-day-old host eggs with an exception of female progeny for T. chilonis. On 0-day-old host eggs, T. japonicum developed faster and T. ostriniae had lower progeny survival than the other three Trichogramma species evaluated, respectively. The current study provides useful information to select suitable Trichogramma species for controlling the striped stem borer, C. suppressalis.  相似文献

The biology of Phyllocoptes adalius Keifer (Acari: Eriophyoidea) and influence of insemination on female fecundity and longevity were studied. The experiment was conducted at a constant temperature of 25 ± 0.5 °C, 70–80 % RH and 16-h photoperiod. A modified method of mite rearing on detached leaves in closed cells was successfully applied and demonstrated to be efficient for biological studies of eriophyoids. Survival and development duration of the immature stages, as well as fecundity of female and longevity of adults, were calculated. The longest time of development was observed for eggs, which was almost twice as long as that for larvae and nymphs. Egg-to-adult development did not significantly differ between males and females. Survival rate for the immature stages was highest for nymphs (98.2 %), exceeding 86.2 % for overall pre-adult stages. Life table parameters of P. adalius were estimated as follows: mean generation time (T), 15.8 days; doubling time (Dt), 3.3 days; net reproductive rate (R 0 ), 27.8 female eggs/female; the intrinsic rate of natural increase (r m ), 0.21 female eggs/female/day; the finite rate of increase (λ), 1.23 female eggs/female/day; and sex ratio (proportion females), 0.82. Our studies indicate that P. adalius has the potential for rapid population increase, becoming one of the most important rose mite species.  相似文献

Even though the spermatozoa of several strepsipteran species were described earlier, no data were available for the basal family Mengenillidae. Well-fixed material of the recently described Tunisian species Mengenilla moldrzyki was used for a detailed examination of the sperm ultrastructure. The total length is c. 30 μm. The head region contains a conical acrosome vesicle (0.3-0.35 μm) and an elongated nucleus (7.3 μm) with dense chromatin. Some granular material along with a uniformely dense centriole adjunct and two mitochondrial derivatives are visible at the posterior end of the nucleus. The material of the centriole adjunct does not extend along the flagellum and accessory bodies are absent. The mitochondrial derivatives are elongated structures crossed by a longitudinal crista but lacking parallel transverse cristae and paracrystalline material in the dense matrix. The mitochondrial derivatives gradually reduce their size and end at the most posterior tail region. The flagellar axoneme has a 9 + 9 + 2 pattern and originates beneath the nucleus. In the terminal tail region the axoneme gradually disintegrates. Despite the extreme specialization of the endoparasitc group, strepsipteran spermatozoa are mostly characterized by plesiomorphies. The pattern within the order is largely uniform, but Mengenilla displays several apomorphic features compared to the presumptive strepsipteran groundplan (e.g., absence of crystallizations and cristae in the mitochondrial derivatives). The subdivision of the intertubular material into two compartments with a dense beak-like structure adhering to the tubular wall supports a clade Coleopterida (=Strepsiptera + Coleoptera) + Neuropterida.  相似文献

The effect of a naturally acquired infection by three acanthocephalan parasites Dentitruncus truttae, Echinorhynchus truttae, and Polymorphus minutus on the reproductive potential of their intermediate host, Echinogammarus tibaldii (Amphipoda) from Lake Piediluco (Centre of Italy) was assessed. During May 2007, 1135 amphipods were collected from two different samplings and examined for larval helminths. Forty-five amphipods were infected and of those, 16 were infected with D. truttae (intensity = 1-3 larvae), 15 with E. truttae (intensity = 1-2 larvae), and 14 with P. minutus (intensity = 1 larva). The sex ratio was nearly 1:1 in all examined amphipods. One female infected with D. truttae contained six eggs in the brood pouch and another female infected with E. truttae contained five eggs. However, none of the eight female amphipods harbouring P. minutus larva contained eggs in their brood pouch. Uninfected females of the same size and body length as that of the infected females contained between 20 and 32 eggs. No acanthocephalan species were found to co-occur.  相似文献

Bioassays were conducted to document the effects of Metarhizium anisopliae infection on adult female Asian longhorned beetle (Anoplophora glabripennis) reproduction before death and subsequent survival of offspring. The effect of infection on fecundity was evaluated for females already laying eggs and for newly eclosed females using M. anisopliae isolates ARSEF 7234 and 7711, respectively. Decreased longevity and oviposition compared with controls were observed in females that were already laying eggs when exposed to M. anisopliae ARSEF 7234. Newly eclosed females exposed to M. anisopliae ARSEF 7711 displayed shortened longevity (10.0 ± 0.7 days vs 74.3 ± 6.8 days for controls) and decreased oviposition (1.3 ± 0.7 eggs per ARSEF 7711-exposed female vs 97.2 ± 13.7 eggs per female for controls) compared with controls. Percentages of eggs that did not hatch were greater for both groups of fungal-treated females compared with controls and 60.0% of unhatched eggs contained signs of fungal infection. The percentage of larvae dying within 9 weeks of oviposition was higher for sexually mature females exposed to ARSEF 7234 compared with controls and >40% of dead larvae displayed signs of fungal infection. Thus, for both stages of females and both fungal isolates, fewer surviving larvae were produced after female fungal infection compared with controls. M. anisopliae infection affects female fitness by decreasing female longevity, by decreasing female oviposition before death and through horizontal transmission of M. anisopliae to offspring.  相似文献

Studies supporting a project seeking to introduce Heringia calcarata (Loew) (Diptera: Syrphidae) to New Zealand (NZ) to supplement biological control of woolly apple aphid (WAA), Eriosoma lanigerum (Hausmann) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) are reported. Annual surveys of H. calcarata presence and abundance in a Virginia, USA apple orchard revealed a bimodal distribution, with peaks in mid-June and mid-September. In the field, female H. calcarata oviposited on sentinel apple shoots infested with WAA, providing an efficient method for egg collection and larval production. Similarly, most field-collected females readily deposited viable eggs on WAA colonies in laboratory cages, demonstrating that mated females will oviposit in captivity. Survivorship of eggs and larvae transported to NZ was good, yielding adult flies in containment in Auckland. Adult, virgin female H. calcarata reared from eggs in captivity developed mature oocytes, providing an important step toward future mating studies in containment. Oviposition and larval feeding studies examined aspects of the intraguild interactions between H. calcarata and Aphelinus mali (Haldeman) (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), the sole biological control agent of WAA in NZ. Field tests using paired sentinel apple shoots with a non-parasitized or parasitized WAA colony revealed that although H. calcarata deposited eggs on both parasitized and non-parasitized colonies, fewest eggs were deposited on heavily parasitized colonies. Feeding studies showed that larval H. calcarata consumed fewer mummified aphids or aphids in an earlier stage of parasitization than non-parasitized aphids.  相似文献

Female qualities in males are common in vertebrates but have not been extensively reported in insects. Vitellogenin (Vg) is highly expressed in the female fat body and is generally required for the formation of yolk proteins in the insect egg. Vg upregulation is generally regarded as a female quality in female oviparous animals. In this study, we found that Bombyx mori Vg (BmVg) is especially highly expressed in the female pupa. Downregulation of the BmVg gene in the female pupa by RNA interference (RNAi) interfered with egg formation and embryonic development, showing the importance of BmVg in these processes. So, we used BmVg as a biomarker for female qualities in the silkworm. Hematoxylin-eosin staining and immunofluorescence histochemistry showed that ovary transplants induced BmVg synthesis in the male pupa fat body. Ovaries transplanted into male silkworms produced only a few eggs with deformed yolk granules. These results suggested that the amount of BmVg in the male silkworm was insufficient for eggs to undergo complete embryonic development. After 17-beta-estradiol was used to treat male pupae and male pupal fat bodies, BmVg was upregulated in vivo and in vitro. These findings indicated that the male silkworm has innate female qualities that were induced by a transplanted ovary and 17β-estradiol. However, in silkworms, female qualities in males are not as complete as in females.  相似文献

A Drosophila melanogaster mutant, fs(1)pyr Su(b) , carrying a mutation that maps to the tip of the X chromosome, has been isolated. The mutation, when present alone, does not confer a detectable phenotype. However, this mutation causes female sterility and reduces embryonic viability when combined with mutations which deregulate the pyrimidine and β-alanine pools. Embryos that are homozygous for the mutations fs(1)pyr Su(b) , r Su(b) [previously designated as Su(b)] and b, and originate from a female parent homozygous for the three mutations show severely reduced viability. Newly laid eggs begin development normally, but the majority of the embryos die just before the eggs are due to hatch.  相似文献

The egg complement (total number of eggs produced by a single female) differs greatly among the species of Strepsiptera. The maximum is found in Stichotrema dallatorreanum (750,000 eggs), and the minimum in Triozocera minor (984 eggs). Based on the egg complement of 31 species in 11 genera, the following conclusions were drawn: (1) The egg complement is generally smaller in those species whose hosts gregariously cohabit in a very limited area, or are distinct flower-visitors, compared with those whose hosts display the above two traits weakly; (2) The egg complement is determined by the size of the maternal body. The size of female strepsipterans is reduced when they parasitize smaller host such as males and workers, as compared with those that parasitize larger host such as females and queens; likewise, the size of the strepsipterans becomes larger on increase in size of hosts, showing that their egg complements are principally determined by the size of host species; (3) The increase in the egg complement is compensated for by the reduction in egg size. The relative egg size (length of the firstinstar larva/length of maternal body) is conspicuously reduced according to an increase in the size of the female strepsipterans.  相似文献

Drosophila melanogaster females homozygous forflex, an X-linked recessive mutation, do not survive. Hemizygous males are unaffected. Homozygous embryos appear to lack SXL, the product of theSex-lethal (Sxl) gene, apparently as a result of disruption ofSxl splicing. It is known that bothSxl and its somatic splicing regulators [snf andfl(2)d] also function in the development of the female germ line. For this reason, we investigated the role offlex in the germ line by generatingflex/flex clones inflex/+ females. Females carrying such clones in their germ lines do not lay eggs whereas females carryingflex+ eggs lay viable eggs. Additionally, DAPI staining of ovarioles showed that diploid germ cells that are homozygous mutant forflex do not complete oogenesis. These results indicate that theflex+ gene product may be required for the development of the female germ line.  相似文献

Dwarfism in males is a common phenomenon in planktonic monogonont rotifers. Considering the small body size of males, some studies suggested that the development time of male rotifers is faster than that of females. However, empirical studies associated with such a speculation are scarce. In this study, we used two common rotifer species, Brachionus calyciflorus and Brachionus plicatilis (each with two geographical populations), to test the hypothesis that the development time of dwarf males is significantly shorter than that of females. Results showed that male eggs (embryos) were deposited much faster than female eggs (embryos) in both Brachionus species. However, the embryonic development time of these small male eggs (embryos) was longer than that of large female eggs (embryos). As a result, males needed significantly longer total development time than females. The total development time of males was 2–3 h longer than that of females in both Brachionus species. Male-producing and female-producing females in the two Brachionus species did not show any difference in development time. Because sexual reproduction begins at high population densities in both species, postponement of development in males will be advantageous by decreasing mating costs in male rotifers.  相似文献

At 25°C, adult female aedes aegypti are most sensitive to sterilization by juvenile hormone (JH) mimics when such chemicals are applied 32 to 36 hr after the blood meal (when the ovaries are at late stage III to early stage IV). Application of JH mimics during this period reduces egg fertility and female fecundity and induces the production of large numbers of visually abnormal eggs. As the most sensitive phase for sterilization with JH mimics is well before oviposition, and as many abnormal eggs are laid following JH mimic treatment, it is likely that in this species sterilization effects are induced by some action on the developing oöcyte rather than on embryonic development. The relative activities of several JH mimics in sterilizing adult female A. aegypti are very similar to their relative activities in inhibiting metamorphosis. Thus the sterilizing action of JH mimics is likely to be a true JH effect and can be used as a test for JH activity for A. aegypti.  相似文献

Superparasitism is a widespread phenomenon. Having accepted superparasitism, mated female parasitoids must decide on the sex of each egg they subsequently lay into the same host. Theory predicts that this decision is either based on host quality, when more male eggs are laid in hosts that are already parasitized because they are perceived to be of poorer quality; or more eggs are laid of the sex that is most likely to be a strong larval competitor, i.e. generally females.Anastatus disparis is a facultative endoparasitic egg parasitoid. We used ‘artificial’ hosts to explore outcomes of decision making by A. disparis during superparasitism under a manipulated absence of larval competition. When only one egg was laid it was always female. As the number of eggs laid increased, so more of them were male. This supports the theory that oviposition decisions are based on host quality; more male eggs were laid in hosts that were already parasitized and thus of poorer quality. In a second experiment, eggs were exposed to parasitoids for different periods of time. Half the eggs were dissected to determine the number of parasitoid eggs that had been laid. The remaining eggs were incubated and the number and sex of offspring that ultimately emerged, following larval competition, were recorded. Under superparasitism conditions fierce larval competition ensued; only one offspring survived and they were predominantly female. In conclusion, oviposition decisions by female A. disparis accepting self-superparasitism were made based on host quality.  相似文献

The first record of the omnivorous predator Dicyphus maroccanus Wagner (Hemiptera: Miridae) inhabiting tomato crops in the Valencia region (East Coast of Spain) was in 2009. Since then, D. maroccanus has often been found preying on the eggs of Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) in this area. To evaluate this predator’s potential as a biological control agent, its life-history traits in the presence and absence of prey [(eggs of Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)] on tomato plants were studied under laboratory conditions. Immature stages that preyed on eggs of E. kuehniella developed successfully. However, no nymph completed development on the plant without the addition of E. kuehniella eggs. To reach adulthood, male and female D. maroccanus nymphs consumed 267 and 312 E. kuehniella eggs, respectively. The net reproductive rate (R0) was estimated to be 34.52 female eggs per female, the generation time (T) was 40.48 days, and the estimated intrinsic rate of increase (rm) was 0.0868 females per female per day at 25 °C. In a second experiment, the capacity to detect plants infested or not infested with T. absoluta was studied using a Y-tube olfactometer. Female D. maroccanus were strongly attracted to the odor of T. absoluta-infested plants. In a third experiment, the capacity of D. maroccanus to control T. absoluta on tomato plants was investigated under extended laboratory conditions. Dicyphus maroccanus significantly reduced the number of T. absoluta-infested leaves in over 90 % of cases relative to control conditions. These results suggest that D. maroccanus could play a significant role in T. absoluta management. The potential of this zoophytophagous predator as a biocontrol agent on tomato crops is discussed.  相似文献
