This study examined the restoration of the digestive capacity of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua Linnaeus) following a long period of food deprivation. Fifty cod (48 cm, 1 kg) were food-deprived for 68 days and then fed in excess with capelin (Mallotus villosus Müller) on alternate days. Ten fish were sampled after 0, 2, 6, 14 and 28 days and the mass of the pyloric caeca, intestine and carcass determined. Two metabolic enzymes (cytochrome c oxidase and citrate synthase) were assayed in white muscle, pyloric caeca and intestine, and trypsin activity was measured in the pyloric caeca. A delay of 14 days was required before body mass started to increase markedly, whereas most of the increase in mass of both the pyloric caeca and intestine relative to fish length occurred earlier in the experiment. By day 14, the activities of trypsin and citrate synthase in the pyloric caeca as well as citrate synthase in the intestine had reached maxima. The growth of the digestive tissues and restoration of their metabolic capacities thus occur early upon refeeding and are likely required for recovery growth to take place. The phenotypic flexibility of the cod digestive system is therefore remarkable: increases in trypsin activity and size of pyloric caeca resulted in a combined 29-fold increase in digestive capacity of the fish during the refeeding period. Our study suggests that Atlantic cod are able to cope with marked fluctuations in food availability in their environment by making a rapid adjustment of their digestive capacity as soon as food availability increases.  相似文献

Seasonal prey bursts are important for the life cycles and energy budgets of many predators. This study documents the diet and, especially, the importance of the ephemeral occurrence of capelin as prey for Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) in Godthaabsfjord, west Greenland, over an annual cycle. The cod showed clear differences in diet composition on the 11 sampling dates resulting in a spring–summer, late summer–autumn and winter cluster. Moreover, a single sampling date, 12 May, was defined by cod gorge feeding on spawning capelin, which led to average stomach contents 4.3 times higher than the average for the remaining sampling dates. Changes in nitrogen stable isotope values from 22 April to 7 July in cod liver and muscle tissue were used to calculate the consumption of capelin. Based on this, the consumption of capelin varied between 538 and 658 g wet weight for a 1.3 kg cod. Using published consumption/biomass estimates and observed growth rates, the capelin intake corresponds to 10.1%–33.3% of the annual food consumption and accounts for 28.1%–34.5% of the annual growth of the cod. The present study documents the omnivorous feeding mode of Atlantic cod but highlights the utilization and importance of ephemeral prey bursts for the annual energy budget of the cod. It is hypothesized that access to capelin is critical for the postspawning recovery of Godthaabsfjord cod.  相似文献

Diet investigations were carried out on 0-, 1- and 2-year-old Northeast Arctic cod (Gadus morhua) sampled in the Barents Sea during 1984–2002. Stomach-content analyses showed that the 0 and 1 group cod fed mainly on crustaceans, with krill and amphipods composing up to 70% of their diet. Krill (Thysanoessa spp. and Meganyctiphanes norvegica) and amphipods (Themisto spp.) were mainly found in cod stomachs sampled in the central and close to the Polar Front region in the Barents Sea where these prey organisms are reported to be abundant in summer. A shift in the main diet from crustaceans to fish was observed from age 1 to age 2. The diet of 2-year-old cod mainly comprised capelin (Mallotus villosus) and other fish, and to a lesser degree, krill and amphipods. Shrimp (mainly Pandalus spp.) was also an important prey in both age 1 and 2 cod. A statistically significant positive relationship was obtained between capelin stock size and the amount of capelin in the diet of 2-year-old cod. Results from this study also show that the larger age-2 cod preyed more on capelin in winter and that larger cod (>22 cm) prefer larger capelin (>12 cm). During periods of low capelin abundance, the 2-year-old cod shift their diet more to crustaceans, such as krill and amphipods. A positive significant relationship was also obtained between Total Fullness Index (TFI) and the amount of capelin in the diet and between TFI and the growth of 2-year-old cod, indicating that the growth of age-2 cod is to a large extent dependent on the amount of capelin consumed. Growth of age-1 cod was also positively correlated to TFI.  相似文献

During 11 March to 4 April 2002, the distribution of Barents Sea capelin Mallotus villosus along the coast of Finnmark, northern Norway, was covered four times by combining acoustic survey with trawling, synoptically and simultaneously sampling capelin and its main fish predators; cod Gadus morhua, haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus and saithe Pollachius virens. The surveys demonstrated how these gadoid predators were able to exploit such a short‐term abundance of forage fish. The predator aggregation as well as the stomach fullness and proportion of capelin in their diet followed the capelin spawning migration, increasing in areas and periods with increasing capelin abundance. Capelin clearly constituted most of the biomass in stomachs of cod (97%), haddock (87%) and saithe (96%). The stomach fullness was highest in cod and lowest in haddock, although in areas with low capelin abundance, saithe had more capelin in their stomachs. The total length (LT) of capelin in predator stomachs increased with predator LT, but the proportion of capelin in the diet was not influenced by predator LT. The capelin in predator stomachs was significantly smaller than capelin in the trawl hauls, also when compared within the same sex, indicating feeding selectivity towards weaker individuals. Female capelin, being significantly smaller than the males, predominated in the diet of haddock, whereas in cod and saithe the sex ratio was more equal. Male capelin predominated in the predator diet during the pre‐spawning period, whereas the females predominated as the spawning commenced. During the overall study period, most of the female capelin in predator stomachs was in a pre‐spawning or a spawning stage, whereas the majority of the males appeared to be spent. Regardless of sex, the percentage of spent, relative to pre‐spawning or spawning capelin in the diet of the predators, followed the capelin spawning dynamics, increasing with time as the spawning progressed.  相似文献

Gelatine was extracted from Atlantic salmon and Atlantic cod skin by the acid extraction process. After filtration and ion exchange treatment the extracts were colourless and free from fishy odour. In three separate experiments the average yields of gelatine from salmon and cod skins were 39.7% (+/-2.2%) and 44.8% (+/-0.2%) respectively, on a dry matter basis. Gelatine from salmon contained slightly more hydroxyproline and proline (16.6%) than cod gelatine (15.4%), whereas the content of serine was lower (4.6% versus 6.3%). Salmon gelatine expressed slightly higher gelling temperature (12 degrees C) than cod gelatine (10 degrees C), and higher initial gel strength. During storage at 10 degrees C, gel strengths were increased and more so with gels made from cod than from salmon gelatine. Hence, gels made from cod and salmon gelatines extracted at 56 degrees C achieved the same gel strength (195g) after 7days of storage. Gelatines extracted at a higher temperature (65 degrees C) gave lower gel strengths.  相似文献

A study was conducted to determine the influence of environmental change on an endoparasite, Echinorhynchus gadi (Acanthocephala) of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) over a 30-year period off the coast of Labrador in the north-western Atlantic, North Atlantic Fisheries Organization subareas 2J-3K. Cod, once an abundant fish species that had been commercially exploited for many decades, declined precipitously during the mid-1980s onwards. This decline was attributed to climatic changes that affected the entire food chain from zooplankton to fish, sea birds and marine mammals. A monitoring programme was introduced, sampling cod by otter trawling using research vessels. The fish, after capture, were frozen at - 20 degrees C, subsequently thawed and the digestive tract removed and examined for the parasite in 2006. Data from samples taken in 1976, 1980-81, 1986, 1990, 2000 and 2003 were compared statistically with those collected in 2006. The results indicate a decline in the prevalence and mean abundance of E. gadi in 1986 with a minimum in 2000 but increasing gradually in 2003 and 2006. These changes were coincident initially with a decline of oceanic temperature and the entire food web, including capelin (Mallotus villosus), a preferred prey of cod and primary source of E. gadi. The increase in prevalence and mean abundance of the parasite in 2006 were associated with an increase of oceanic temperature and the return of small schools of capelin to offshore areas. Cod older than 4 years harboured a greater abundance of E. gadi than younger fish, while no difference was observed between the sexes. The results suggest that the abundance of E. gadi can be useful as a bioindicator of environmental changes in the north-western Atlantic.  相似文献

Groups of cod, Gadus morhua (L.), were fed exclusively on fish, crustaceans, or crustacean shells for a period of 3 weeks. Chitinase and ß-glucosidase activities were measured in enzyme extracts of stomach contents, stomach tissue, pyloric caeca, intestinal contents, and intestine tissue, and compared to the enzyme activities of control fish starved over the same period. Fulton's condition factor K , liver lipid content and liver water content were determined to estimate the effects of the diets on the condition of cod.
general, the highest chitinase activities were measured in samples of cod that had been fed on whole crustaceans. In this feeding group, there was also a remarkable increase of activity by a factor of four to eight in the pyloric caeca, compared to the group fed on fish and the control group, respectively.
Measurements of ß-glucosidase activity revealed no similar dependence on food quality, ß-glucosidase occurrence seemed to be mainly restricted to the pyloric caeca and the intestine of cod.  相似文献

We tested two biologically based predictions that potentially influence scales of spatial association between Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua , and prey populations of capelin, Mallotus vilhsus . If cod aggregate in response to concentrations of prey, then spatial association (coherence) between capelin and cod was predicted to peak at the scale of maximum capelin spatial variance. If capelin-cod coherence did not match the scale of maximum prey spatial variability, then capelin-cod coherence was predicted to peak at the spatial scale that maximizes net energetic benefit to the predator. Contrary to predictions, we found no evidence of aggregative responses of cod to capelin over resolution scales of 20 m to 10 km. This result was observed consistently at the temporal scale of a single transect ( c . 1 h duration) and at the scale of averaged transects ( c . 2 weeks duration). Estimates of cod foraging energetics showed that they were not constrained by physiology to aggregate relative to capelin at any scale less than 10 km. A net energetic gain of 478 to 784 kJ would result if a 44 cm, 752 g cod consumed a ration of eight to 12 capelin over a period of 58 h. Energetic calculations included costs of egestion and excretion (317 to 476 kJ), maintenance (58 kJ), digestion (125 to 188 kJ), and continuous swimming during ration assimilation (79 kJ). During this period, a 44 cm cod could travel over 38 km swimming at 1 b.l. s−1. Foraging cod are virtually certain to encounter capelin over this distance based on the abundance of pre-spawning capelin present in coastal bays during the spawning season. This study illustrates that aggregative responses of predators do no occur at all scales and possibly occur over a very limited range of scales.  相似文献

Metamorphosis in cod, Gadus morhua L., was investigated with respect to morphological changes in the alimentary tract (mouth, stomach and pyloric caeca) and external characters (finfold and fin development). Morphometric measurements and histological investigations were made on both larvae and juveniles and all fish lengths are given as standard length. Median unpaired fins started to develop when the fish were 9–10 mm in length. The larval median finfold was resorbed when fish reached a size of 11–15 mm. The vertebrae were formed in fish of 11–20 mm. The supraterminal mouth, seen in larvae <12 mm, changed gradually to a sub-terminal position in juveniles larger than 65 mm. The development of the stomach and pyloric caeca started at 15 mm and the juvenile form was seen in fish of 40 mm. The ability to store and grind food particles in the stomach developed gradually as fish increased in size from 20 to 40 mm. Compared to many other teleost species, cod juveniles are relatively large when the stomach and pyloric caeca become fully developed. These findings may have important implications for both start-feeding of cod larvae and the weaning of juveniles on to artificial diets.  相似文献

Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) were held either at seasonal ambient temperatures (-0.3 to 11 degrees C) or at a relatively constant control temperature (8-11 degrees C) to investigate aspects of protein synthesis during a period of compensatory growth. Protein synthesis rate, total RNA, and RNA-specific protein synthesis rate were determined in white muscle and liver when ambient temperatures were -0.3, 4.5, and 11 degrees C in February, June, and July, respectively. To allow for comparisons between treatment temperatures, fish were also acutely transferred to a comparable assay temperature in February and June. Over the transition from 4.5 to 11 degrees C (June to July), the ambient-held cod had a significant increase in size and a substantially higher growth rate relative to control-held fish over the same period, consistent with cold-induced compensatory growth. During the onset of this enhanced growth, in June when ambient temperature was approximately 4.5 degrees C, ambient-held fish elevated their capacity for protein synthesis in the white muscle and liver via elevation of the RNA content. When ambient temperature reached the same point as for the control fish (11 degrees C), the rate of white muscle protein synthesis remained higher in the ambient-held vs. that in the control-held fish, a process facilitated by elevated RNA content and greater RNA-specific rate of protein synthesis. In the liver, all measured characteristics of protein synthesis were the same for ambient and control fish in July. The latter suggests that compensatory growth may be in part explained by improved efficiency of protein synthesis.  相似文献

Atlantic cod is a marine fish that lives at low temperatures of 0-10 degrees C and contains a cold-adapted alkaline phosphatase (AP). Preparations of AP from either the lower part of the intestines or the pyloric caeca area were subjected to proteolytic digestion, mass spectrometry and amino acid sequencing by Edman degradation. The primary structure exhibits greatest similarity to human tissue non-specific AP (80%), and approximately 30% similarity to AP from Escherichia coli. The key residues required for catalysis are conserved in the cod AP, except for the third metal binding site, where cod AP has the same variable residues as mammalian APs (His153 and His328 by E. coli AP numbering). General comparison of the amino acid composition with mammalian APs showed that cod AP contains fewer Cys, Leu, Met and Ser, but proportionally more Asn, Asp, Ile, Lys, Trp and Tyr residues. Three N-linked glycosylation sites were found. The glycan structure was determined as complex biantennary in type with fucose and sialic acid attached, although a trace of complex tri-antennary structure was also observed. A three-dimensional model was obtained by homology modelling using the human placental AP scaffold. Cod AP has fewer charged and hydrophobic residues, but more polar residues at the intersubunit surface. The N-terminal helix arm that embraces the second subunit in dimeric APs may be more flexible due to a replaced Pro at its base. One disulfide bridge was found instead of the two present in most other APs. This may invoke greater movement in the structure that together with weaker subunit contacts leads to improved catalytic efficiency.  相似文献

A collagenase in the culture supernatant of B. subtilis FS-2, isolated from traditional fish sauce, was purified. The enzyme had a molecular mass of about 125 kDa. It degraded gelatin with maximum activity at pH 9 and a temperature of 50 degrees C. The purified enzyme was stable over a wide range of pH (5-10) and lost only 15% and 35% activity after incubation at 60 degrees C and 65 degrees C for 30 min, respectively. Slightly inhibited by EDTA, soybean tripsin inhibitor, iodoacetamide, and iodoacetic acid, the enzyme was severely inhibited by 2-beta-mercaptoethanol and DFP. The protease from B. subtilis FS-2 culture digested acid casein into fragments with hydrophilic and hydrophobic amino acids as C-terminals, in particular Asn, Gly, Val, and Ile.  相似文献

Growth of 2659 Atlantic cod Gadus morhua aged 4 to 9 years examined in Placentia Bay, Newfoundland, peaked in most cases in June and was at a minimum in October or November. Water temperature, partial fullness index ( I P) and gonado‐somatic index ( I G) explained between 31 and 52% of the monthly variability in growth. Temperature and I P of capelin Mallotus villosus had significant effects on growth of all age groups and explained most of the variance for ages 6–8 and 4–5 years, respectively. The I P of large invertebrates (ages 4 to 7 years), sandlance ( Ammodytes sp. age 6 years) and demersal fishes (age 9 years) had age‐specific effects in the model. Overall, amphipods, decapods and echinoderms dominated the Atlantic cod diet in most seasons, but fish consumption by Atlantic cod was high in June and July, particularly on capelin. The rapid increase in somatic mass during June and July occurred despite cold water temperatures ( < 3° C at 50 m) and moderate to high gonado‐somatic index. The findings of this study suggest that when food was not a limiting factor, growth tended to increase even when Atlantic cod occupied colder waters, but when food was limiting, the opposite may have occured.  相似文献

The feeding habits of harp seals (Phoca groenlandica) in the Barents Sea were examined in studies conducted during June 1991, September 1990 and 1991, and October 1992. Analyses of stomach and intestinal contents were carried out and concurrent estimates of prey abundance were made using trawl gear. Harp seals appeared to feed at low intensity in the pack ice belt during the first half of June. There was little potential prey in the water column, but prawns (Pandalus borealis), capelin (Mallotus villosus) and polar cod (Boreogadus saida) were abundant close to the bottom. In September, the seals sampled in the northern pack ice areas of the Barents Sea fed on the pelagic amphipod Parathemisto libellula, krill (Thysanoessa spp.), prawns and, to a lesser extent, on fish species such as polar cod, sculpins (Cottidae) and snailfish (Liparidae). Trawling revealed that large quantities of Parathemisto libellala were present in the upper layers of the water column. Fish, mainly capelin and polar cod, were less abundant and occurred in deeper waters. In mid-October, the diet of seals in the northern Barents Sea consisted mainly of amphipods (Parathemisto sp.). Later in October, when increasing pack ice cover forced the harp seals to move south, the diet seemed to change from amphipods to fish prey, predominantly capelin and polar cod.  相似文献

The Barents Sea system is often depicted as a simple food web in terms of number of dominant feeding links. The most conspicuous feeding link is between the Northeast Arctic cod Gadus morhua, the world''s largest cod stock which is presently at a historical high level, and capelin Mallotus villosus. The system also holds diverse seabird and marine mammal communities. Previous diet studies may suggest that these top predators (cod, bird and sea mammals) compete for food particularly with respect to pelagic fish such as capelin and juvenile herring (Clupea harengus), and krill. In this paper we explored the diet of some Barents Sea top predators (cod, Black-legged kittiwake Rissa tridactyla, Common guillemot Uria aalge, and Minke whale Balaenoptera acutorostrata). We developed a GAM modelling approach to analyse the temporal variation diet composition within and between predators, to explore intra- and inter-specific interactions. The GAM models demonstrated that the seabird diet is temperature dependent while the diet of Minke whale and cod is prey dependent; Minke whale and cod diets depend on the abundance of herring and capelin, respectively. There was significant diet overlap between cod and Minke whale, and between kittiwake and guillemot. In general, the diet overlap between predators increased with changes in herring and krill abundances. The diet overlap models developed in this study may help to identify inter-specific interactions and their dynamics that potentially affect the stocks targeted by fisheries.  相似文献

Numerous changes occur post-mortem in fish, affecting its chemical composition and nutritional quality. In the present paper we describe the effect of storage on ice or at -30 degrees C or -80 degrees C on 10 species of Mediterranean fish. Water and lipid soluble antioxidants, lipid pattern and products of oxidative attack on lipids, proteins and DNA were quantified for 7 consecutive days on homogenates of fish light muscle. The earliest events were oxidation of ubiquinol and vitamin C, which disappeared almost completely within 48 hours. Ubiquinol oxidation gave rise to an initial increase of ubiquinone, which peaked at the second day: thereafter ubiquinone itslef decreased, more rapidly and to a greater extent than vitamin E. The decrease in antioxidants was accompanied by significant oxidative damage to lipids, proteins and DNA. TBARS significantly increased beginning from the third day of storage in all species and were linked to a significant reduction in the n-3 PUFA of triglycerides (TG) and phospholipid fractions (PL). A remarkable elevation of protein carbonyls and 8OHdG occurred approximately 24 hours later than PUFA oxidation. For SOD, GPX and GSH significant depletions occurred for all species only at 6th or 7th day, but the final values were always higher than 50% compared to the initial ones. Deep-freezing of the same species at -30 degrees C and -80 degrees C for up to 12 months did not significantly affect the levels of enzymatic antioxidants, the redox couple GSH/GS-SG, n-3 and n-6 PUFA of TG and PL fractions of the light muscle. The only antioxidants, which at -30 degrees C and -80 degrees C appeared to be degraded after 6 and 12 months were ubiquinol and vitamin C. As expected their degradation was higher at -30 degrees C than at -80 degrees C. In fact the average decrease for ubiquinol at -80 degrees C was 42% at 6 and 12 months respectively, whereas at -30 degrees C the decrease was 61% and 87% For vitamin C the average decrease at -80 degrees C was 36% and 67% at 6 and 12 months respectively, and at -30 degrees C it was 61% and 82%. Vitamin E was considerably more stable than ubiquinol and vitamin C. The relative stability of the antioxidants, with the exceptions of ubiquionols, vitamin C and, to a certain extent, vitamin E, was accompanied by a very limited increase in oxidation products. In addition no significant hydrolysis of TG and PL fractions were observed throughout the storage time. The dynamics of lipid, protein and DNA oxidation is discussed in the light of depletion of the various antioxidant systems.  相似文献

The key step in the purification of a deoxyribonuclease (DNase) from extracts of cod (Gadus morhua L.) pyloric caeca, is the selective retention of the enzyme by anion exchange chromatography. The cod DNase purification on Q-Sepharose Fast Flow (Pharmacia) was optimized, using a 60 ml fixed-bed column. In combination with titration curve analysis, we have screened the effect of buffer pHs, feed conductivity and protein loading, on the product recovery and purity. We have developed elution conditions which allow effective separation of the cod DNase from bounded impurities, such as proteinases and nucleic acids. Low levels of these impurities were regarded as essential for the desired product quality. The optimum resolution and maximum purification (ca. 20-fold increase in specific activity) of DNase, was, however, achieved at low protein loading (2.6 mg ml-1 gel), corresponding to less than 4% of the dynamic bed capacity. Scale-up to a 2.5 l pilot scale column (axial flow) and a 0.25 l radial flow column showed that the separation and yield obtained at laboratory scale was retained, and was independent of column geometry and bed height. The implications for a production scale scenario of 100 g of fractionated protein, are also discussed, as well as process hygiene. The optimization described herein adds further knowledge to the treatment of fish waste and the downstream processing of valuable biochemicals from marine raw material.  相似文献

Shewanella putrefaciens has been considered the main spoilage bacteria of low-temperature stored marine seafood. However, psychrotropic Shewanella have been reclassified during recent years, and the purpose of the present study was to determine whether any of the new Shewanella species are important in fish spoilage. More than 500 H2S-producing strains were isolated from iced stored marine fish (cod, plaice, and flounder) caught in the Baltic Sea during winter or summer time. All strains were identified as Shewanella species by phenotypic tests. Different Shewanella species were present on newly caught fish. During the warm summer months the mesophilic human pathogenic S. algae dominated the H2S-producing bacterial population. After iced storage, a shift in the Shewanella species was found, and most of the H2S-producing strains were identified as S. baltica. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis confirmed the identification of these two major groups. Several isolates could only be identified to the genus Shewanella level and were separated into two subgroups with low (44%) and high (47%) G+C mol%. The low G+C% group was isolated during winter months, whereas the high G+C% group was isolated on fish caught during summer and only during the first few days of iced storage. Phenotypically, these strains were different from the type strains of S. putrefaciens, S. oneidensis, S. colwelliana, and S. affinis, but the high G+C% group clustered close to S. colwelliana by 16S rRNA gene sequence comparison. The low G+C% group may constitute a new species. S. baltica, and the low G+C% group of Shewanella spp. strains grew well in cod juice at 0 degrees C, but three high G+C Shewanella spp. were unable to grow at 0 degrees C. In conclusion, the spoilage reactions of iced Danish marine fish remain unchanged (i.e., trimethylamine-N-oxide reduction and H2S production); however, the main H2S-producing organism was identified as S. baltica.  相似文献

Effect of storage condition of tuna viscera on chemical, physical and microbiological changes of its sauce were monitored. Results based on microbial counts, protein degradation products, total volatile base (TVB), and trimethylamine (TMA) contents, showed that tuna viscera stored at room temperature underwent more deterioration than that kept in ice, especially with increasing storage time. As a result, fish sauce obtained from tuna viscera stored at room temperature for a longer time rendered the greater amino nitrogen, TVB, TMA contents as well as browning intensity. However, storage conditions had no marked effect on overall changes in chemical, physical and microbiological characteristics of sauce generated during fermentation. Additionally, fish sauce produced from tuna viscera kept at room temperature comprised lower histamine content than that prepared from fresh or ice-stored viscera. Therefore, tuna viscera stored at room temperature for up to 8h could be used for the production of fish sauce with no detrimental effect on the quality.  相似文献

Juvenile herring and capelin are the main stocks of plankton feeders in the Barents Sea, the cod is the dominant predator. Warm climate favours recruitment of herring and cod, but large stocks of juvenile herring hamper survival of the capelin fry. Since the early 1970s, the herring stock has been grossly overexploited, which could have led to an imbalance in the state of the predatorprey relationships in the Barents Sea. In the 1970s and early 80s, however, cod could feed on capelin which had excellent growth and recruitment conditions when the herring was absent. The consequences of the reduced herring stock were triggered in the mid 1980s, when excellent recruitment conditions for herring and cod occurred. Three abundant year classes of cod were recruited, but the herring stock was not sufficiently large to take full advantage of the favourable recruitment conditions. Given the lack of juvenile herring and a reduced capelin stock, the rapidly growing cod stock grazed down all other available prey species in the area, including its own progeny, and starved cod, seabirds and seals have in later years appeared on the north Norwegian coast. The capelin fishery collapsed, and the traditional coastal cod fisheries have been struck by the most serious crisis on record.  相似文献
