Activity of the enzymes of cholinergic system was investigated in the cochlea of mice sensitized for audiogenic seizure by priming and compared with genetically audiogenic seizure susceptible mice. Higher choline acetyltransferase activity was found in the cochlea of primed mice as well as in the cochlea of audiogenic seizure susceptible mice as previously stated. A possible interpretation of these data is discussed.  相似文献

The middle ear and the cochlea have been described in 20 representatives from the superfamily Phyllostomatoidea of the suborder Microchiroptera. Various measurements have been made and the results compared by means of graphs. The ultrasonic pulses used by these bats for echolocation have been recorded and analysed. Generally, the structure of the cochlea does not show extreme modifications as found in some other superfamilies that have previously been discussed.  相似文献

The structure of the external ears and the ultrasonic cries produced by one member of the single family of Megachiroptera and six representatives of the Vespertilionoidea of the Microchiroptera have been described. All the specimens were intra-vitally fixed and the preparations have been examined, photographed and measured. Brief notes are given on the middle ear and the following measurements have been made on the cochlea: the general size of the cochlea in various dimensions, the width and thickness of the basilar membrane, the size of the spiral ligament and the height of the cells of Claudius. In conclusion it can be said that there are marked differences in the structure of the cochleae of the two suborders, as well as within the superfamily Vespertilionoidea.  相似文献

The cochleae of chick embryos of 8 days of incubation until hatching (21 days) were examined by scanning electron microscopy. Unlike what one would expect from the literature, the total number of hair cells per cochlea (10,405 +/- 529) is already determined and visible in a 10-day embryo and the growth of the cochlea is a result of the growth in size and surface area of the hair cells. We also find that the hair cells differentiate simultaneously throughout the cochlea and have followed the differentiation of individual hair cells throughout development. During development we find that the total number, hexagonal packing, and orientation of the stereocilia in each hair cell is determined early and accurately (9- to 10-day embryos). The stereocilia then begin to elongate in all the cells of the cochlea at approximately 0.5 micron/day. By Day 12 the tallest stereocilia in each cell are 1.5-1.8 micron long, the mature length for cells at the proximal end of the cochlea. At this point all stereocilia cease elongating, but those along the inferior edge gradually increase in width from 0.11 micron to maximally 0.19 micron in 17-day embryos. When the stereocilia on the inferior edge reach their mature width, widening ceases and the elongation of stereocilia in the distal hair cells begins again. When these stereocilia have attained their mature lengths, they stop growing. Thus elongation and widening of stereocilia are separated in time. During this period, 11 to 13 days, the shape of the tufts at the proximal end of the cochlea changes. This occurs because stereocilia in the front of each tuft are absorbed while others at the sides appear de novo. This rearrangement converts a circular bundle of stereocilia to a rectangular bundle.  相似文献

The structure of the cochlea has been studied in 26 species of feral rodents from the Sub-Orders Myomorpha and Caviomorpha. The specimens were all intravitally perfused to obtain good preservation of the internal ear. The following measurements were made on the cochleae: the height and width of the cochlea, the number of half-turns, the width and thickness of the basilar membrane, the height of the cells of Claudius and the size of the spiral ligament; other special features were also noted.  相似文献

Imaging with hard X-rays allows visualizing cochlear structures while maintaining intrinsic qualities of the tissue, including structure and size. With coherent X-rays, soft tissues, including membranes, can be imaged as well as cells making use of the so-called in-line phase contrast. In the present experiments, partially coherent synchrotron radiation has been used for micro-tomography. Three-dimensional reconstructions of the mouse cochlea have been created using the EM3D software and the volume has been segmented in the Amira Software Suite. The structures that have been reconstructed include scala tympani, scala media, scala vestibuli, Reissner's membrane, basilar membrane, tectorial membrane, organ of Corti, spiral limbus, spiral ganglion and cochlear nerve. Cross-sectional areas of the scalae were measured. The results provide a realistic and quantitative reconstruction of the cochlea.  相似文献

The cochleotopic organization of the second auditory cortical area was investigated in cats anesthetized with pentobarbital by the evoked potentials method. Two independent representations of the cochlea were shown to exist in area AII: One in the dorsocaudal portion, the other in its ventrorostral portion. These projections of the cochlea differ in size and in the order of representation of its different parts. The dorsocaudal part of the auditory projection area of the cochlea, which extends over a distance of 2.6–2.8 mm from the center of the basal to the center of the apical focus, is arc-shaped. The order of arrangement of projections of different parts of the cochlea in this region of the auditory cortex coincides with that in the first auditory area, whereas the projection of the cochlea in the ventrorostral part of area AII, the length of which is 1.4–1.6 mm, has the opposite order of representation. The localization of projections of the cochlea in different cats shows considerable variability not only as regards anatomical topography of the auditory cortex, but also from one animal to another. The basal region of the cochlea was shown to project to a larger area of the cortex than the middle and apical portions taken together. It is suggested that the basal turn of the cochlea is functionally the most important for perception and primary analysis of auditory information.A. A. Triphosphoinositide (TPI) has been demonstrated to be a receptor for aminoglycosides in the cochlea and may regulate ionic permeability by its binding with Ca++. This phospholipid was localized by a protein A-gold technique in the cochlea at the electronmicroscopic level. TPI was prepared by a neomycin column and antibodies to it were raised in rabbits. The antibody used in this study reacted virtually only to TPI among the tested lipids. TPI was localized mainly at stereocilia, cuticular plates, head plates of Deiters' cells, plasma membrane, and mitochondria of various cells in the organ of Corti. In the vascular stria, TPI was found mainly at the plasma membrane of basal infoldings of the marginal cells. Possible physiological and pathophysiological roles of TPI in the cochlea are briefly discussed.  相似文献

An in vitro mouse temporal bone preparation has been developed in order to allow the investigation of structures and functions in a living hearing organ. Fluorescent vital probes (a potentiometric styryl dye, RH 795, and a vital dye staining cellular cytoplasm, calcein) were perfused through the scala tympani to stain cellular components of the cochlea. Observations of the cochlear apical turn were performed using a confocal microscope. In spite of the anatomical constraints due to the small size of the mouse cochlea, detailed images were obtained. The sensory cells as well as their innervating nerve fibres were clearly seen. Nerve fibres crossing the tunnel of Corti and projecting to the outer hair cells could also be visualised.  相似文献

The variations in width and height of the basilar membrane along the cochlea in four species of laboratory animals: white rat, guinea pig, chinchilla and cat have been investigated. The results obtained have been used to calculate the height/width ratio along the cochlea, suggested by Bruns as an estimate of basilar membrane stiffness. The given characteristic is practically identical in all species studied despite the differences in the frequency ranges of auditory reception and, therefore, cannot be used either for characterizing the basilar membrane stiffness or for frequency mapping the cochlea of mammals.  相似文献

The cochlea amplifies sound over a wide range of frequencies. Outer hair cells have been thought to play a mechanical part in this amplification, but it has been unclear whether they act rapidly enough. Recent work suggests that outer hair cells can indeed work at frequencies that cover the auditory range.  相似文献

The vestibular system maintains the body’s sense of balance and, therefore, was probably subject to strong selection during evolutionary transitions in locomotion. Among mammals, bats possess unique traits that place unusual demands on their vestibular systems. First, bats are capable of powered flight, which in birds is associated with enlarged semicircular canals. Second, many bats have enlarged cochleae associated with echolocation, and both cochleae and semicircular canals share a space within the petrosal bone. To determine how bat vestibular systems have evolved in the face of these pressures, we used micro-CT scans to compare canal morphology across species with contrasting flight and echolocation capabilities. We found no increase in canal radius in bats associated with the acquisition of powered flight, but canal radius did correlate with body mass in bat species from the suborder Yangochiroptera, and also in non-echolocating Old World fruit bats from the suborder Yinpterochiroptera. No such trend was seen in members of the Yinpterochiroptera that use laryngeal echolocation, although canal radius was associated with wing-tip roundedness in this group. We also found that the vestibular system scaled with cochlea size, although the relationship differed in species that use constant frequency echolocation. Across all bats, the shape of the anterior and lateral canals was associated with large cochlea size and small body size respectively, suggesting differential spatial constraints on each canal depending on its orientation within the skull. Thus in many echolocating bats, it seems that the combination of small body size and enlarged cochlea together act as a principal force on the vestibular system. The two main groups of echolocating bats displayed different canal morphologies, in terms of size and shape in relation to body mass and cochlear size, thus suggesting independent evolutionary pathways and offering tentative support for multiple acquisitions of echolocation.  相似文献

Multituberculate petrosals with well-preserved, three-dimensional internal anatomy from the Late Cretaceous/early Paleocene Bug Creek Anthills, Montana, U.S.A., are described from X-radiographic and SEM images, as well as from conventional visual observations, and are compared with the anatomy of the osseous inner ear in monotremes and in primitive non-therian and therian mammals. Results of this study indicate that: (1) the cochlea of at least some multituberculates retained a lagena, previously known only in monotremes among mammals; (2) an enlarged vestibule evolved in several lineages of multituberculates independently, and hence is not a synapomorphy of the order; (3) the cochlear canal lacks osseous laminae in support of the short, wide basilar membrane, which was probably inefficient in responding to high-frequency airborne vibrations; and (4) consequently, bone-conducted hearing in some multituberculate species may have been important in interpretation of their surroundings. Comparisons with the inner ear of monotremes and primitive therians indicate that curvature of the cochlea and cribriform plates for passage of vestibulocochlear nerve branches through the petrosal are unlikely homologues between monotremes and therians. From non-therian to therian mammals, there is a distinct morphological gap in the inner ear transition, characterized by acquisition of a number of neomorphs in the therian inner ear; an intermediate stage has yet to be discovered.  相似文献

Cenograms are graphic representations of the size distribution of the mammalian species present in a community and are used in palaeoecological studies to obtain information about the environment. Three empirical rules are commonly applied in the interpretation of cenograms. This paper reviews the methodology of cenograms, special attention being paid to those rules. A database of 92 recent faunas and environmental data has been used to explore the relationships between the shape of the cenograms and the environment. A quantitative procedure has been developed to test the validity of the rules from a statistical point of view. The analyses carried out in this paper failed to confirm the alleged relationships between the size distribution of the large mammals and the aridity of the environment and between the size distribution of the small mammals and the temperature. The gap in medium-sized species is related to the vegetation structure, although only in tropical communities.  相似文献

Loss-of function mutations in the transmembrane inner ear expressed (Tmie/TMIE) gene have been shown to cause deafness in mice and humans (DFNB6). Previous studies report that the circling mouse can be an animal model for DFNB6. However, the expression pattern of Tmie protein in postnatal developmental stages has not been clearly revealed. In this study we tried to investigate the expression of Tmie protein in the liver, spleen, kidney, and lung, as well as in the cochlea. We examined various tissue samples from five different age groups of C57BL/6J animals. Using western blotting analysis, the expression of Tmie protein in these organs has been identified. The results show that Tmie protein expression in the cochlea has been increased in postnatal developmental stages, indicating that Tmie plays an important role in not only the development and also in the function of the cochlea. The expression pattern of Tmie in adult mouse organs such as the liver, spleen, kidney, and spleen significantly vary in adult rats. The order of Tmie expression level in mice (63 days after birth) was spleen, liver, lung, cochlea, and kidney, whereas in the adult rat it was liver, cochlea, lung, spleen, and kidney.  相似文献

Pannexin (Panx) is a gene family encoding gap junction proteins in vertebrates. So far, three isoforms (Panx1, 2 and 3) have been identified. All of three Panx isoforms express in the cochlea with distinct expression patterns. Panx1 expresses in the cochlea extensively, including the spiral limbus, the organ of Corti, and the cochlear lateral wall, whereas Panx2 and Panx3 restrict to the basal cells of the stria vascularis in the lateral wall and the cochlear bony structure, respectively. However, there is no pannexin expression in auditory sensory hair cells. Recent studies demonstrated that like connexin gap junction gene, Panx1 deficiency causes hearing loss. Panx1 channels dominate ATP release in the cochlea. Deletion of Panx1 abolishes ATP release in the cochlea and reduces endocochlear potential (EP), auditory receptor current/potential, and active cochlear amplification. Panx1 deficiency in the cochlea also activates caspase-3 cell apoptotic pathway leading to cell degeneration. These new findings suggest that pannexins have a critical role in the cochlea in regard to hearing. However, detailed information about pannexin function in the cochlea and Panx mutation induced hearing loss still remain largely undetermined. Further studies are required.  相似文献

Though there have been considerable improvements in the use of statistical methods for clinical trials in recent years, there remain major practical difficulties in the design and interpretation of many trials. This paper concentrates on problems relating to randomisation, the overemphasis on significance testing, and the inadequate size of many trials. Each topic is illustrated by examples from recent trials.  相似文献

Various measurements have been made on the cochleae of some insectivorous African Microchiroptera, including representatives from all the three superfamilies, the Emballonuroidea, Rhinolophoidea and Vespertilionoidea. Their ultrasonic pulses have been recorded and correlations between the structure of the cochlea and the pulses have been attempted. The most extreme measurements are found in the Rhinolophoidea, confirming earlier results in other species.
