1. Insect population size is regulated by both intrinsic traits of organisms and extrinsic factors. The impacts of natural enemies are typically considered to be extrinsic factors, however insects have traits that affect their vulnerability to attack by natural enemies, and thus intrinsic and extrinsic factors can interact in their effects on population size. 2. Pea aphids Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris (Hemiptera: Aphididae) in New York and Maryland that are specialised on alfalfa are approximately two times more physiologically resistant to parasitism by Aphidius ervi Haliday (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) than pea aphids specialised on clover. To assess the potential influence of this genetically based difference in resistance to parasitism on pea aphid population dynamics, pea aphids, A. ervi, and other natural enemies of aphids in clover and alfalfa fields were sampled. 3. Rates of successful parasitism by A. ervi were higher and pea aphid population sizes were lower in clover, where the aphids are less resistant to parasitism. In contrast, mortality due to a fungal pathogen of pea aphids was higher in alfalfa. Generalist aphid predators did not differ significantly in density between the crops. 4. To explore whether intrinsic resistance to parasitism influences field dynamics, the relationship between resistance and successful field parasitism in 12 populations was analysed. The average level of resistance of a population strongly predicts rates of successful parasitism in the field. The ability of the parasitoid to regulate the aphid may vary among pea aphid populations of different levels of resistance.  相似文献

The performance of three aphid species, Aphis fubae, Acyrthosiphon pisum and Megoura viciae, was quantified on 22 taxonomically-selected host plant species from the genus Vicia (vetches), using intrinsic rate of increase (rm) k standard errors. A. pisum proved to be the most successful aphid species, both in terms of highest potential population increase and widest host range; M. viciae was least successful, with most restricted host range and low rm values on all but the closest relatives of Vicia faba. A wide range of antibiotic resistance was found within the genus, and host resistance to the three aphid species was found to be broadly related to classification patterns based on taxonomy and life-form. Analysis of the components of rm revealed that nymphal survival rates were the most significant factor limiting host colonisation, not pre-reproductive period which is the most important factor in cultivars of V. faba. The consequences of aphid polyphagy on performance are discussed.

Herbivores can have strong deleterious effects on vital rates (growth, reproduction, and survival) and thus negatively impact the population dynamics of plant species. In practice, however, these effects might be strongly correlated, for example as a result of tradeoffs between vital rates. To get better insights into the effects of herbivory on the population dynamics of the long‐lived grassland plant Primula veris population projection matrices were constructed from demographic data collected between 1999 and 2008 (nine annual transitions). Data were collected in two large grassland populations, each of which was subjected to two treatments (grazing by cattle versus a mowing treatment), yielding a total of 36 matrices. We applied a lower‐level vital rate life table response experiment (LTRE) using the small noise approximation (SNA) of the stochastic population growth rate to disentangle the contributions of changes in mean vital rates, variability in vital rates, correlations between vital rates and vital rate elasticities to the difference in the stochastic growth rate. Stochastic growth rates (a= log λS) were significantly lower in grazed than in mown plots (a= 0.0185 and 0.1019, respectively). SNA LTRE analysis showed that contributions of mean vital rates by far made the largest contribution to the observed difference in a between grazed and control plots. In particular, changes in sexual reproduction rates made the largest contributions to lower the stochastic growth rate in grazed plots: both adult flowering probabilities and flower and seed production were importantly lower in grazed populations, but these negative effects were largely buffered by increased establishment and seedling survival rates. Among the stochastic terms of the SNA decomposition, contributions of covariance and correlations between vital rates had the largest impact, whereas contributions of elasticities were smaller. The strongest correlation driver was the association between adult survival and seedling establishment, suggesting that environmental conditions favouring adult survival also are beneficial for seedling establishment. Overall, our results show that herbivory had a strong negative effect on the long‐term population growth rate of P. veris that was primarily mediated by differences in fecundity (flower and seed production) and germination.  相似文献

The kinetic behavior of heterogeneous microbial populations of sewage origin was studied in a single-stage isothermal continuous flow completely mixed aeration tank. A series of experiments were carried out at various dilution rates using glucose as the growth limiting substrate. The steady-state behavior of the system was observed at each dilution rate and the results were found to fit fairly well with the steady-state equation bayed on the Monod model with an endogenous respiration term included, i.e., μ = μmS/(Ks + S) ? Kd. The growth kinetics of cells harvested at steady state for each dilution rate were studied using batch experiments. The multiple response data of the system as functions of time were used to estimate the parameter values in the above kinetic model. It was found that values of the growth parameters changed significantly and systematically with cell population. For example, values of μm were high at high dilution rates and low at low dilution rates. It was also found that only those batch growth parameters from cells obtained at fairly high dilution rates are comparable with those estimated by the results of steady-state operations. The results of this investigation suggest that (1) different cell populations pre dominated at different steady-state dilution rates, with high dilution rates resulting in predominantly fast-growing organisms and low dilution rates resulting in predominantly slow-growing cells, and (2) risk exists in any randomly picked batch experiment to predict the steady-state behavior of the system when heterogeneous microbial populations must be used.  相似文献

The effect of water availability and the temperature of the growth substrate on growth and disease development of softrot bacteria were studied using artificial media and plant material. Water availability was measured as the osmotic potential of a solution (ψosm) and was assessed for solutions of PEG4000 and KNO3 as artificial osmotica and for plant tissue of chicory heads. Growth of softrot bacteria was found at water potentials from ψ= -0.12 MPa to ψ= -8.0 MPa but the lag phase of the growth curve increased with decreasing water potential. The relative growth rates of the three softrot pathogens showed a sigmoidal relationship with water potential, the relative growth rates decreasing rapidly at water potentials lower than ψ= -1.5 MPa. The water potential of harvested chicory heads decreased with storage time of the harvested crop but was still within the growth limits for softrot bacteria. In relation to temperature, the relative growth rate of Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora (Ecc) was highest at 10°C, of Erwinia carotovora subsp. atroseptica (Eca) at 15°C and of Pseudomonas marginalis (Pm) at 5°C. Chicory heads of two cultivars, Rumba and Salsa, inoculated with Ecc, had a significantly higher disease severity at 30°C (0.72 for Rumba and 0.47 for Salsa) than at lower or higher temperatures. In conclusion, temperature and water availability during forcing of chicory were not factors limiting populations of softrot bacteria. Possibilities for crop protection thus only avail during chicory root storage. During storage a high death rate combined with a low growth rate of the softrot bacteria may result in a decrease of bacterial populations below the minimum densities needed for infection during the forcing of chicory heads.  相似文献

The photosynthetic and respiratory responses to irradiance, salinity and temperature of the red alga, Gracilaria vermiculophylla, collected from Kumamoto, Shizuoka and Iwate in Japan were studied using an electronic Dissolved Oxygen sensor. The parameters derived from the photosynthesis versus irradiance relationship indicated the potential to acclimate to broad irradiance variations in all of the populations of G. vermiculophylla collected from these three sites. In addition, the light-saturated photosynthesis rate (P max) and the dark respiration rate of all populations increased with increasing temperature up to 20–30°C, while the P max decreased at 35°C. All populations also showed a broad variation of photosynthetic responses to salinity changes in the range from 10 to 30 psu. On the other hand, the population from Iwate showed high photosynthetic efficiency, especially in the temperature range of 5–10°C, and showed low values of saturation irradiance compared to the populations from Shizuoka and Kumamoto. These results suggest that there is greater potential to acclimate to low irradiance and low temperature in the population from Iwate compared to those from the Shizuoka and Kumamoto populations. However, the P max of the populations from Iwate and Shizuoka was reached at 20°C and 25°C, respectively, while the Kumamoto population reached P max at 30°C. This implies that the latter population has greater potential to tolerate higher temperatures than the former. Such characteristics in photosynthesis and respiration of G. vermiculophylla collected from the three locations probably indicate an acclimation to prevailing environmental conditions in their respective habitats.  相似文献

  • 1 Altered atmospheric composition, associated with climate change, can modify herbivore population dynamics through CO2 and/or O3‐mediated changes in plant quality.
  • 2 Although pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum genotypes exhibit intraspecific variation in population growth in response to atmospheric composition, the proximate mechanisms underlying this variation are largely unknown.
  • 3 By rearing single (green, pink) and mixed (green + pink) pea aphid genotypes on red clover Trifolium pratense at the Aspen Free Air CO2 and O3 Enrichment (Aspen FACE) site, we assessed whether: (i) elevated CO2 and/or O3 concentrations alter aphid growth and development and (ii) individual aphid growth rates predict aphid population densities.
  • 4 We showed that growth and development of individual green and pink aphids were not influenced by CO2 and/or O3 concentrations when reared as individual or mixed genotypes. Individual growth rates, however, did not predict population densities.
  • 5 Reared as a single genotype, green pea aphid populations decreased in response to elevated CO2 concentrations, but not in response to elevated CO2 + O3 concentrations. Pink pea aphid populations reared as a single genotype were unaffected by augmented CO2 or O3. Populations of mixed genotypes, however, were reduced under elevated CO2 concentrations, irrespective of O3 concentrations.
  • 6 Herbivore population sizes may not readily be predicted from growth rates of individual organisms under atmospheric conditions associated with global climate change.

Since the 1970s, populations of the Australian White Ibis (Threskiornis molucca) have dramatically increased in many Australian urban centres. Managers of ibis are currently focusing on limiting this bird's reproductive success in order to reduce population sizes or at least halt further increases in urban areas. Here we use data on nesting success and survival for three populations of ibis around greater Sydney to develop an age-structured population model. The estimated growth rate for all populations combined was about 1.5 % per year and for individual sites were more variable at −1, −7, and 9 %. For all populations, growth rates were most sensitive (based on elasticity analyses) to the survival of adults and least sensitive to fecundity, especially of 3 year olds. Further exploration of the importance of fecundity rates, which are relatively poorly known for these populations, suggests that rates of <0.4 fledglings per nest per year is very likely to lead to a population decline (λ less than lower bound of 95 % CI). Conversely, positive population growth is nearly assured (λ greater than upper bound of 95 % CI) for fecundities of >0.7 fledgling per nest per year. The results suggest that ibis from other locations (probably their traditional breeding areas in inland Australia) have immigrated into urban environments as estimated growth rates cannot account for current population sizes. Management strategies must take these findings into account and also consider that ibis are declining in their traditional habitats to avoid exacerbating their decline at a regional scale.  相似文献

The parasitism (Hymenoptera, Braconidae, Aphidiinae) of alfalfa aphids (Hemiptera, Aphididae) was determined during three crop growing seasons. The highest rates of parasitism of Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris and of Therioaphis trifolii Monell occurred during the first-second and the fourth alfalfa intercuts, respectively. The landscape surrounding the fields affected only parasitism rates of A. pisum. During the second intercut the forest area had a negative influence on parasitism rates, whereas the bordering surfaces of alfalfa and winter cereals had a positive influence. Positive correlations were found between the rates of parasitism of A. pisum and the rate of aphid population increase in the first intercut. By contrast, negative correlations were found in the second intercut, when the aphid population peaked, suggesting that parasitoids contribute to the regulation of the aphid. This study stresses that regulation of alfalfa aphids cannot be explained solely on the basis of one functional group of natural enemies.  相似文献

The development of eight different species (populations) along temporal and vertical gradients in several lakes was studied. Many populations had an exponential growth phase and a decline phase. The growth rate was often high during the exponential phase. Some species, e.g. Oscillatoria spp. and Synedra cf. acus, often also had a long stationary phase. The growth rate and the sinking rate of these populations were often very low. Laboratory batch experiments with dilute phytoplankton populations were carried out to estimate the degree of growth limitation (L) for different populations sample from different lakes during the three growth phases. L was always low and often zero for populations initially in the exponential phase and always high for populations initially in the decline phase. The biotests also gave results that can help to explain the vertical distribution of Oscillatoria or Asterionella in three lakes investigated. The results indicate that the growth rates and the development of the populations were dependent on the external chemical and physical conditions. The transition between the different growth phases seemed often to be dependent on the external nutrient conditions. P, N, Si and Fe were probably the most growth-limiting nutrients. The growth rate of some diatoms was probably limited directly or indirectly at high pH. Laboratory biotests with natural populations may give valuable information on the growth-properties of different populations in the lakes. The biotests should, however, be carried out in combination with chemical and physical measurements and quantitative determinations of population densities.  相似文献

Countergradient variation in norms of reaction can dampen the direct effects of environmental influences on phenotypic traits, allowing phenotypic similarity among populations despite exposure to different environmental conditions. Such norms of reaction may occur at any phase of the life‐history (e.g. growth rates during both embryonic and postembryonic stages may influence geographical variation in adult body size). We collected gravid female lizards (Sceloporus undulatus) from northern (Indiana), central (Mississippi), and southern (Florida) populations, spanning almost the full latitudinal range of the species. Adult females from the southern population were smaller. Intrinsic growth rates of hatchlings were higher for the central population than for the other two populations. This pattern does not parallel the countergradient variation previously found in embryonic developmental rates among these populations. Earlier hatching enhanced survival rates of juveniles to a similar degree among populations, although juvenile survival rates in the field generally increase with latitude in this species. Our data reveal geographical variation in the ways in which intrinsic developmental/growth rates and survival shift during ontogeny, and suggest that latitudinal patterns in adult body size (such as Bergmann's rule) can result from both faster growth, and longer periods of growth. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 106 , 202–209.  相似文献

The incidence of banana aphid, Pentalonia nigronervosa Coqueral and the coccinellid predators populations on banana plants cultivated at the Agricultural Research Centre Farm in El-Kanater El-Khayria, Qualiobia Governorate, Egypt (about 30 km North Cairo) had been studied. The population of this insect pest was relatively high during the cold and wet months (October, November, December, January and February), and found at its lowest level during the summer months. On the other hand, the numbers of aphid were higher on the mother plants than on the suckers. On mother plants, the population density was much higher on the lower parts of the plant than on the upper parts. The growth rate of aphid population infesting the mother plant of banana in season 2001, increased during the period from January to March and decreased from April to June. The population growth rate then increased from July to November then decreased in December. The same trend could be applied for the growth rate of aphid population in season 2002. At high growth rate it is advisable to use chemical control. The effect of weather factors on the population density of the banana aphid; the correlation between the total number of aphid and temperature or R.H. had been worked out. The coccinellid beetles were found on the banana plants during the warm period from March to August.  相似文献

1 Broad beans (Vicia faba L.) were grown at either ambient (350 μL/L) or elevated (700 μL/L) CO2. Elevated CO2 increased shoot weight by 14% and root weight by 24% compared to ambient, but did not affect flowering. 2 A single pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris)) and its progeny decreased shoot and root weights by 20 and 24%, respectively, at ambient CO2 after 20 days, but did not affect flower number. At elevated CO2A. pisum decreased shoot and root weights by 27 and 34% and flower number decreased by 73%. 3 A single glasshouse and potato aphid (Aulacorthum solani (Kaltenbach)) and its progeny had no effect on the growth of bean plants after 20 days at ambient CO2. At elevated CO2, A. solani decreased shoot and root weights by 20 and 18%, and flower number by 60%. 4 The large reduction in flowering caused by aphids at elevated CO2 suggests a change in resource allocation within the plants to compensate for aphid infestation. 5 Aphid density was unaffected by elevated CO2, although there were significant effects of CO2 on the resulting population structure of both A. pisum and A solani. We suggest that at elevated CO2, aphids appear not to achieve their maximum reproductive potential and their populations are limited by the lower carrying capacity of their host plants.  相似文献

We studied the demography of Viola elatior, V. pumila, and V. stagnina, three rare and endangered Central European floodplain species, to (i) analyse variation in life-cycles among congeners and between regions (Dyje-Morava floodplains, Czech Republic; Upper Rhine, Germany), (ii) to define sensitive stages in the life-cycles, and (iii) to identify possible threats for population viability and species conservation. Matrix models were based on the fate of marked individuals from a total of 27 populations over two years. We analysed population growth rate (λ), stage distribution, net reproductive rate (R 0), generation time, age at first reproduction, and elasticity and calculated a life table response experiment (LTRE). Most populations were declining and λ did not differ between species or regions during the observed interval. Despite higher probabilities for survival and flowering in the Dyje populations, R 0 was higher in the Rhine populations. Also other demographic traits showed consistent differences between regions and/or species. Complex life-cycles and large variation in λ precluded unequivocal identification of sensitive stages or vital rates for conservation. Variation between regions may be a consequence of differences in habitat quality. Our results suggest that deterministic processes such as reduced management, succession, habitat destruction, and lack of disturbance through reduced or eliminated flooding present the strongest threat for the viability and persistence of populations of the three floodplain violets as compared with stochastic processes. However, the persistent seed bank of the species may buffer populations against environmental variation and represents a reservoir for recovery after resumption of suitable land-use management.  相似文献

Knowledge of mating systems is required in order to understand the genetic composition and evolutionary potential of plant populations. Outcrossing in a population may co-vary with the ecological and historical factors influencing it. However, literature on the outcrossing rate is limited in terms of wild sorghum species coverage and eco-geographic reference. This study investigated the outcrossing rates in wild sorghum populations from different ecological conditions of Kenya. Twelve wild sorghum populations were collected in four sorghum growing regions. Twenty-four individuals per population were genotyped using six polymorphic simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers to compute their indirect equilibrium estimates of outcrossing rate as well as population structure. In addition, the 12 populations were planted in a field in a randomised block design with five replications. Their progeny (250 individuals per population) were genotyped with the six SSR markers to estimate multi-locus outcrossing rates. Equilibrium estimates of outcrossing rates ranged from 7.0 to 75.0%, while multi-locus outcrossing rates (t m) ranged from 8.9 to 70.0% with a mean of 49.7%, indicating that wild sorghum exhibits a mixed mating system. The wide range of estimated outcrossing rates in wild sorghum populations indicate that environmental conditions may exist under which fitness is favoured by outcrossing and others under which selfing is more advantageous. The genetic structure of the populations studied is concordant with that expected for a species displaying mixed mating system.  相似文献

1. Generalist predators are important contributors to reliable conservation biological control. Indirect interactions between prey species that share a common generalist predator can influence both community dynamics and the efficacy of biological control. 2. Laboratory cage experiments investigated the impact of the combined consumptive and non-consumptive effects of predation by adult Hippodamia convergens as a shared predator on the population growth and relative abundance of Acyrthosiphon pisum and Aphis gossypii as prey species. Predation pressure and prey density were varied. 3. At low predation pressure the indirect interaction between aphid species was asymmetrical with a proportionally greater negative impact of predation on A. gossypii than on A. pisum. At intermediate predation pressure, the indirect interaction became symmetrical. At high predation pressure and higher levels of prey density, it was asymmetrical with greater negative impact on A. pisum, often driven to local extinction while A. gossypii populations persisted. 4. A linear mixed-effects model including early population growth of both aphid species and predation pressure explained 96% and 92% of the variation in the population growth of A. pisum and A. gossypii, respectively, over an 8-day period. The overall effect of shared predation on the indirect interaction between the two aphid species is best described as apparent commensalism, where A. pisum benefited from early population growth of A. gossypii, while A. gossypii was unaffected by early population growth of A. pisum. Considering these indirect interactions is important for conservation biological control efforts to be successful.  相似文献

Trait-mediated indirect effects can have important effects on food web dynamics but are still poorly understood in the field. In a previous population cage study of a small community of aphids and an aphid natural enemy it was found that a trait-mediated indirect effect involving the natural enemy’s behaviour was key to understanding community persistence. Here evidence is presented that a related phenomenon involving some of the same species occurs in the field. Surveys showed that two species of aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum and Megourella purpurea) tended to share a host plant with a third generally unpalatable species (Megoura viciae) more often than expected by chance. Further evidence suggested this was not due to differential plant suitability or location, but to a positive effect of M. viciae on the performance of the other two species. To test this, field experiments were set up comparing the size and persistence of A. pisum colonies sharing or not sharing a plant individual with M. viciae colonies. A. pisum colonies tended to be larger and persisted for a longer period of time in the presence of M. viciae, an effect that was significant for small colonies exposed to many predators. When protected from predation the presence of M. viciae had no effect on A. pisum colonies. The positive effects of M. viciae on A. pisum is thus likely to be natural-enemy mediated rather than plant mediated. How predation by Syrphidae, the major group observed in the study, is affected by M. viciae is discussed. Recent advances in stochastic demography provide tools to examine the importance of random and periodic variation in vital rates for population dynamics. In this study, we explore with simulations the effect of disturbance regime on population dynamics and viability. We collected 7 years of demographic data in three populations of the perennial herb Primula farinosa, and used these data to examine how variation in vital rates affected population viability parameters (stochastic growth rate, λS), and how vital rates were related to weather conditions. Elasticity analysis indicated that the stochastic growth rate was very sensitive to changes in regeneration, quantified as the production, survival, and germination of seeds. In one of the study years, all seedlings and mature plants in the demography plots died. This extinction coincided with the driest summer during the study period. Simulations suggested that a future increase in the frequency of high-mortality years due to climate change would result in reduced population growth rate, and an increased importance of survival in the seed bank for population viability. The results illustrate how the limited demographic data typically available for many natural systems can be used in simulation models to assess how environmental change will affect population viability.  相似文献
