18 non-breeding three-spined sticklebacks from a heavily predated site a further 24 fish from a predator-free site were screened for their responses to a realistic model pike. The behaviour of the same fish when confronted with a territorial intruder during the breeding season was also recorded, the two tests being carried out in random sequence and with an interval of at least 6 weeks. Multivariate analyses identified major behavioural dimensions in the pike test and in the intruder test, summarized by the labels ‘boldness’ and ‘aggression’ respectively. Sticklebacks from the heavily predated site were both less bold and less aggressive than those from the unpredated site. Levels of aggression for individuals within each population were positively correlated with their boldness scores, but only for the period when the subjects were recovering from a simulated predatory attack.  相似文献

Size-matched groups of three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) fry were established using fish from two sites, one with abundant piscivorous predators (the high-risk site) and the other with very few heterospecific predators (the low-risk site). Over a period of two months, social interactions within groups were monitored regularly and mean lengths and coefficients of variance in length were tracked. Agonistic behaviour was observed in 45% of observation periods, but was more common in the groups of fry from the low-risk site, where it was more likely to take the form of direct attack rather than displacement without contact. In both categories of fish, the great majority of agonistic acts were directed to fish of a similar size or smaller. Mean size increased rapidly in all groups. At the same time, the coefficient of variation also increased, approaching 15% after two months in both categories of fish, reflecting differing growth rates among individuals. After three months, the two largest and the two smallest fish from each group were observed individually during an encounter with a model predatory fish. Large and small fish from both sites behaved identically in this test, suggesting that in sticklebacks (unlike guppies, for example) early experience of aggressive attacks from conspecific companions may not influence the development of anti-predator responses. As has been reported previously, sticklebacks from the high-risk site responded much more strongly than low-risk fish.  相似文献

Predation risk from fish and bird predators was assessed at seven Scottish Gasterosteus aculeatus L. sites. Samples of adult male and female sticklebacks and fry from each site were tested with either a model heron or a live pike to measure anti-predator responses. Principal Component Analyses were then used to describe the responses, the first factor to emerge from each multivariate analysis providing an index of overall level of response toward the predator. Significant sexual and inter-population differences in behaviour are described. Sticklebacks from populations at high risk from either predatory fish or birds showed higher fright response scores than fish from low risk sites. In general, adult male sticklebacks are bolder than adult females during interactions with predators.  相似文献

Three-spined stickleback fry (mean length 20 mm, mean weight 14 mg) were reared for 14 days alone and in groups of six in a constant per capita water volume. The fish originated from two habitats (rock-pools, sea) of different predation pressure. The fry were fed nauplii of Artemia and commercial aquarium fish food ad libitum. Specific growth rates of solitary and schooling fry differed and were also affected by their origin. The specific growth rates of solitary fry from the sea averaged 1.0% day−1 (length) and 6.0% day−1 (weight) and those of solitary rock-pool fry 1.1 and 6.7%, respectively. For group-reared fish the corresponding values were 1.2% (length) and 6.6% (weight), and 1.3% (length) and 7.6% (weight). The finding that schooling sticklebacks grow faster than solitary ones implies that grouping enhances fitness in stickleback fry under the conditions of our experiments.  相似文献

Eighty sticklebacks (32 parasitized, 48 uninfected) were subjected to a serial reduction in dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration until they showed continuous aquatic surface respiration for longer than 10s (> 10s ASR). An analysis of results showed that (1) parasitized adult male and female sticklebacks reacted to low DO significantly earlier than non-parasitized controls; (2) severity of parasite infection was significantly correlated with DO at which > 10s ASR occurred; (3) gravid, non-parasitized females show ASR at a relatively high DO, with a threshold response similar to that of parasitized fish.
It is suggested that the metabolic respiratory demand of the parasitic tapeworm larvae causes the stickleback to modify its behaviour at lowered DO. This behavioural modification causes the fish to surface, where they are likely to be at risk from predatory birds. Field data on DO levels at the study site show that environmental conditions in the shallow lake margins approach the range required to affect the behaviour of heavily parasitized sticklebacks.  相似文献

The relative abundance of predatory fish at 15 sites was assessed and the reactions of stickle-backs (Gasterosteus aculeatus) collected from these sites to a hunting pike (Esox lucius) and a breeding conspecific were measured. Both the degree of boldness shown towards a pike and the level of aggression shown towards conspecifics varied significantly between sites; sticklebacks coexisting with abundant predators showed the lowest level of both these responses, but this was less clear-cut in the case of intraspecific aggression.  相似文献

Yolk-sac pike fry were stocked at densities of 0.74 – 81.4 m−2 in two ponds, each divided into eight sectors (mean area 155.8 m2). Growth and survival were recorded from May to December 1985. The growth rates were variable within each sector. The size-range of sampled fish increased throughout the year, but showed no significant correlation with density. Fry survival was initially density-independent but switched by late June/July to density-dependence, ranging from 0.5 to 43.6% of initial stocking numbers. The highest mean daily mortality rates occurred during May-July. The final survival in December ranged between sectors from 0.059 to 11.25% of the starting stock densities. The final biomass per unit area of pike surviving in December was not related to initial stocking density. In Pond 1 the mean biomass produced was 2.21 gm−2 and in Pond 2 was 3.49gm−2.
Pike fry < 30 mm fed only on invertebrates; those 30–100 mm took a wide range of invertebrates, cyprinids. sticklebacks and other pike. Cannibalism occurred at most densities between 5.45 and 81.4 fish m−2.
Where attempts are made to increase pike production in managed populations by releasing small fry, an upper stock density of 5 fry m−2 is advised if large, density-dependent mortalities are to be avoided.  相似文献

The biology of young grey mullet, Mugil cephalus L. populations of a coastal lagoon—the Negombo Lagoon on the West Coast of Sri Lanka was studied from October 1976 to March 1978. The relative abundance of fry were found to vary from month to month, with peaks occurring in December-January, May and September-October, coinciding with the end of rainy seasons. It was found that the young fry tended to migrate into the lagoon at a size of about 10–20 mm, most frequently between 15–20 mm in length, by which time they were fully scaled. The young fry after a period of growth in the shallow areas of the lagoon, when they reached a size of 30–35 mm, emigrated into the deeper waters of the lagoon. The rate of growth, as computed from length frequency distribution studies, was found to be around 0.24 mm day−1. Results of diurnal surveys showed a movement of the larger size fry into shallower waters during the hours of darkness and this movement appears to be independent of the tidal cycle. It is postulated that the cause of this migration is to escape from predators, chiefly piscine. Investigations of the meristic characters indicated that the young fry which migrated into the lagoon at different times of the year probably originated from a single spawning stock.  相似文献

1. The relative importance of density‐dependent and density‐independent processes in explaining fluctuations in natural populations has been widely debated. In particular, the importance of larval supply and whether it may control the type of regulatory processes a population experiences has proved contentious. 2. Using surveys and field experiments conducted in streams in Canterbury, New Zealand, we investigated how variation in the survival of non‐migratory Galaxias vulgaris fry was affected by density‐dependent and density‐independent processes and how this variation influenced recruitment dynamics. 3. Fry populations with high settlement densities experienced a 70–80% reduction in population size from density‐related mortality during the first fourteen days after peak settlement but thereafter the influence of density‐dependent processes on fry was weak. The impact of environmental conditions on fry populations was dependent on fry size and the magnitude of the perturbation, such that flooding effects on fry survival were most severe when fry were small. 4. In streams not affected by flooding, the size and density of introduced trout (Salmo trutta and Oncorhynchus mykiss) were the most significant factors determining the abundance of eventual recruits. A field experiment manipulating brown trout access to fry populations revealed that trout as small as 110 mm may be capable of greatly reducing and possibly preventing galaxiid recruitment. 5. Overall, the results indicated density‐dependent population regulation was only possible at sites with high native fish densities because trout were likely to be suppressing the number of potential recruits at sites with low native fish numbers. Whilst density‐dependent processes had a strong effect on fry survival following the period of peak fry abundance, density‐independent processes associated with flow and predatory trout influences on fry survival largely determined recruitment variability among galaxiid populations. Focusing conservation efforts on improving habitat to increase fry retention and reducing the impacts of trout on galaxiids would ensure more native fish populations reached their potential abundance.  相似文献

This paper describes the results of a study of the effects of Schistocephalus solidus on one of its intermediate hosts, the stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus , in an annual population in which infection is known to occur in one major wave in autumn. Weight, as a function of length, was lower in infected sticklebacks compared with uninfected fish during autumn and spring; in winter and summer, both categories of fish were in equally poor condition. In early autumn, the hepatosomatic indices of newly infected fish were higher than those of uninfected fish, perhaps due to a pathological response. Thereafter, relative liver size of uninfected and infected sticklebacks was comparable until spring, when it increased sharply in uninfected sticklebacks but remained stable at a low level in infected sticklebacks. Few infected fish reached maturity. The only males to attain maturity whilst sustaining an infection of S. solidus were in particularly good condition. Nuptial coloration, kidney hypertrophy and testes size were unimpaired in these mature infected males, but whether they were capable of successful reproduction remains debatable.  相似文献

Predation risk is one of the major forces affecting phenotypic variation among and within animal populations. While fixed anti-predator morphologies are favoured when predation level is consistently high, plastic morphological responses are advantageous when predation risk is changing temporarily, spatially, or qualitatively. Three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) are well known for their substantial variability in morphology, including defensive traits. Part of this variation might be due to phenotypic plasticity. However, little is known about sticklebacks’ plastic ability to react morphologically to changing risks of predation and about the proximate cues involved. Using a split-clutch design we show that odour of a predatory fish induces morphological changes in sticklebacks. Under predation risk, i.e., when exposed to odour of a predator, fish grew faster and developed a different morphology, compared to fish reared under low predation risk, i.e., exposed to odour of a non-predatory fish, or in a fish-free environment. However, fast growing comes at cost of increased body asymmetries suggesting developmental constraints. The results indicate that sticklebacks are able to distinguish between predatory and non-predatory fishes by olfactory cues alone. As fishes were fed on invertebrates, this reaction was not induced by chemical cues of digested conspecifics, but rather by predator cues themselves. Further, the results show that variation in body morphology in sticklebacks has not only a strong genetical component, but is also based on plastic responses to different environments, in our case different predation pressures, thus opening new questions for this model species in ecology and evolution.  相似文献

Variation in the overhead fright response within populations between adult and juvenile sticklebacks and between juveniles from separate populations are described. The development of the response was measured experimentally in fish from two populations subject to avian predation and in predator-inexperienced fry from one of these populations. The response developed with age and/or body size. The even development of the response in a sample of laboratory-reared fry suggests that experience of predators is not necessary for the normal development of this behaviour.  相似文献

Common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) were reared from hatching until 61 mm total length (TL) at 21 degrees C. At 14 weeks and 20 weeks post-hatch, corresponding to initial lengths of 30 mm and 44 mm respectively, fish were acclimated to 10 degrees C using a rate of cooling of 1 degrees C per day. A statistical model was used to compare the time course in the change of white muscle myofibrillar ATPase activity with temperature acclimation. The myosin heavy chain (MHC) composition of white muscle myofibrils was investigated using peptide mapping. A significant increase in myofibrillar ATPase activity was observed after 2-3 weeks in the 44 mm group, but not until 4-5 weeks in the 30 mm group. when they had reached 37 mm TL. The MHC banding pattern of 120 mm TL fish acclimated to 10 degrees C or 21 degrees C for a minimum of 6 weeks were distinct from each other. The MHC peptide map characteristic of 10-degrees C-acclimated fish was not observed in individuals less than 37 mm length. We therefore conclude that the capacity to alter the composition and properties of myofibrils with cold acclimation is acquired in juvenile carp at around 37 mm TL.  相似文献

Male poeciliid fishes inseminate females using an intromittent organ called the gonopodium. Here we report on natural variation in gonopodium size both within and between 12 populations of the freshwater fish Brachyrhaphis episcopi (Poeciliidae) in Panama. We show that males from sites with more predatory fish species have, on average, a relatively longer gonopodium than males inhabiting sites with fewer predatory fish. Gonopodium length was not correlated with the site-specific adult sex ratio and the average sex ratio was more strongly female biased at sites with more predatory fish. The gonopodium exhibited lower phenotypic variance than the average for sexually selected traits and it generally showed negative allometry. Our results are similar to those reported for the guppy Poecilia reticulata . Two alternative hypotheses for these findings are discussed. First, that population differences are sexually selected. Second, that they are an incidental consequence of environmental differences between sites. Specifically, that higher water flow rates select for enlarged fin size and stockier bodies in downstream sites where predatory fish are more common.  相似文献

Further evidence for size-assortative schooling in sticklebacks   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Using brook ( Culaea inconstans ) and 10-spined ( Pungitius pungitius ) sticklebacks we examined body-size related schooling behaviour. Small and large sticklebacks were allowed to choose between two test schools, of small and of large individuals, with and without a piscivorous fish ( Oncorhynchus mykiss ) visible. Sticklebacks of both species preferred the company of fish of matching body size: small fish associating with a school of small fish, large fish with a school of large fish. While no interspecific differences were found in responses to school selection, body size and predator presence did affect selection of school-type. In both species, small fish tended to show a stronger preference for matching schools. The preference was enhanced in small fish with presence of a predator, but not in large fish. These observations are further evidence for assortative schooling in sticklebacks.  相似文献

An investigation of the reproductive state and gonad development of Gerreidae in Natal showed that the fry of Gerres rappi, G. acinaces and G. filamentosus entered estuaries at 10 mm (s.l.). They stayed in the estuary until attainment of maturity, which was between 70 and 110 mm according to species. Gonad activity was initiated in estuaries but all females left before their eggs were ripe. Testes ripened while the fish were still in the estuary but no ripe running individuals were found. Since few large and no spent individuals occurred in the estuaries sampled, it appears that most fish do not return from the sea. Sequence of oocyte maturation and testes development were determined histologically. The estuarine area may be of importance to the fry as a safe nursery ground and to maturing individuals as an environment in which gonad maturity is reached for the first time.  相似文献

Variation among populations in extrinsic mortality schedules selects for different patterns of investment in key life-history traits. We compared life-history phenotypes among 12 populations of the live-bearing fish Brachyrhaphis episcopi. Five populations co-occurred with predatory fish large enough to prey upon adults, while the other seven populations lacked these predators. At sites with large predatory fish, both sexes reached maturity at a smaller size. Females of small to average length that co-occurred with predators had higher fecundity and greater reproductive allotment than those from populations that lacked predators, but the fecundity and reproductive allotment of females one standard deviation larger than mean body length did not differ among sites. In populations with large predatory fish, offspring mass was significantly reduced. In each population, fecundity, offspring size and reproductive allotment increased with female body size. When controlling for maternal size, offspring mass and number were significantly negatively correlated, indicating a phenotypic trade-off. This trade-off was non-linear, however, because reproductive allotment still increased with brood size after controlling for maternal size. Similar differences in life-history phenotypes among populations with and without large aquatic predators have been reported for Brachyrhaphis rhabdophora in Costa Rica and Poecilia reticulata (a guppy) in Trinidad. This may represent a convergent adaptation in life-history strategies attributable to predator-mediated effects or environmental correlates of predator presence.  相似文献

Three-spined sticklebacks, Gasterosteus aculeatus Linnaeus, were exposed to 0, 0.1, 1.0, 2.5 and 10 μg bis(tributyltin)oxide (TBTO) 1−1 for up to 7.5 months in a flow-through system of sea water. As early as 4 weeks after the start of the experiment, fish from the 10 μg TBTO 1−1 group showed diminishing appetite, increasing lethargy and opaque eyes. The mortality in this group after 2 months of exposure was 80%. No significant differences between the control and the exposed groups were noted concerning fecundity, hatched fry and frequencies of malformed fry. The gonad somatic index (GSI) was determined before and during the spawning period. GSI in control fish increased significantly, while that in the exposed groups remained unchanged between the two sampling occasions. Structural examination of the gills from fish exposed for 2 months to 10 μg TBTO I−1 revealed fusion between secondary lamellae and gradual cell degeneration. The chloride cells were characterized by degenerating mitochondria. Hepatocytes in fish exposed to 2.5 and 10 μg TBTO I−1 contained an increased number of lipid-containing vacuoles and the nucleoli were disorganized and fragmented.  相似文献

Horizontal migrations of zooplankton between macrophyte patches and open areas were investigated in the sparsely vegetated littoral zone of the Sulejow Reservoir in June-July 2000 and 2001, using one-litre plastic traps. Large-bodied zooplankton: daphnids and copepods generally swam towards the open water at dusk and towards submerged macrophytes at dawn. Small-bodied zooplankton (Bosmina sp., Chydorus sp.) did not show any pattern of horizontal movement. At the time of the research the phytoplankton community was dominated by eatable diatoms (Cyclotella sp.), whose biomass reached 14 mg l−1. Thus, bottom-up forces (food scarcity) are not likely to be responsible for the observed zooplankton migrations. Analyses of fish stomach contents showed high contribution of large zooplankters to the food of juvenile roach (Rutilus rutilus) and perch (Perca fluviatilis) which densely inhabited the littoral zone of reservoir. High fish pressure in the littoral zone along with high density of the predatory cladoceran, Leptodora kindtii in the open water, suggest that top-down forces (predatory pressure) were responsible for the migration of large zooplankton. At dusk predatory pressure of fish fry exceeded that of L. kindtii, forcing endangered zooplankton to escape from macrophytes towards open water. The opposite situation occurred at dawn. The consequences of the relationships for both zooplankton and fish fry communities dynamics are discussed.

Convict cichlid fish have biparental care for a period of about6 weeks lasting from egg laying until the young (fry) have grownto about 10 mm. However, the young can sometimes survive withcare from only one parent, and desertion of the mate and offspringby males has been observed. I tested a theoretical model modifiedfrom Lazarus (1990) which predicted that mate and offspringdesertion by male convict cichlids should be promoted by lowpredation pressure on fry, high remating opportunities for males, increasing age of fry, and decreasing number of fry. Males deserted7.8% of 334 broods studied during two breeding seasons in CostaRican streams. As predicted, males deserted their broods mostfrequently at sites with the highest brood survivorship (lowestbrood predation pressure), when fry were close to independenceand when brood size was smaller than average. Sex ratios andinterspawning intervals did not indicate any relationship betweenmate desertion and opportunities for remating for males. Thereuse of spawning caves may favor fidelity to the mate and brood, and defending the young from predators at the same time as defendingthe cave from conspecifics may favor biparental care in thisspecies.  相似文献
