Photoresponses of isofemale strains of sympatric sibling species, Drosophila pseudoobscura and D. persimilis from MacDonald Ranch, California and D. pseudoobscura and D. miranda from Mather, California were compared at relative humidities of 95, 50 and 5% for a period of 30 min. The sympatric species could be distinguished behaviourally by their responses at the three humidities. Although the average photoresponses of all four populations were negative, D. pseudoobscura was significantly more photonegative than its sibling sympatric species in each habitat. There was no effect of humidity on light response over the short term duration of exposure to desiccating environments. A hypothesis is presented to account for this phenomenon.  相似文献

The role of spotted knapweed phenology on the attack rate of two seed-head insects Urophora affinis and Larinus minutus was assessed in a series of field studies at four study sites in south-eastern British Columbia, Canada. Slow or later developing knapweed plants had more seed heads that contained only single or multiple U. affinis whereas early or faster developing plants had more seed heads containing L. minutus alone or in combination with U. affinis. L. minutus did not distinguish between seed heads with or without U. affinis larvae when laying eggs. However, seed heads with multiple U. affinis present, produced fewer L. minutus adults than expected. The probability of single or multiple U. affinis galls being present increased with seed-head diameter but was not affected by seed-head height. Attack by L. minutus increased with seed-head diameters >5 mm and was lower at plant heights above 50 cm. These results demonstrate two mechanisms that enable U. affinis to successfully coexist with L. minutus: differences between the species in their response to the developmental phenology of knapweed heads, and increased survivorship of U. affinis in heads with multiple U. affinis galls through niche interference competition. These mechanisms provide a possible explanation for the persistence of U. affinis populations on spotted knapweed, in spite of high levels of within seed-head mortality that have been observed with increasing L. minutus populations.  相似文献

1 We studied the synchrony of two sympatric delphacids species with different outbreak behaviours over a range of 250 km in Argentina. 2 The spatial synchrony in the dynamics of Delphacodes kuscheli and Toya propinqua was quantified by collecting individuals of both species simultaneously at three sampling heights: ground, 1.5 m and 6 m above the ground. Synchrony between paired sampling sites separated by increasing distances was estimated using a nonparametric covariance function. 3 A significant difference was found between the spatial synchrony of the species studied. Delphacodes kuscheli individuals collected at 6 m above the ground showed consistent spatial synchrony over long distances with correlation values declining by 40%. Population dynamics showed declining synchrony as site separation increased. Toya propinqua populations did not show this pattern. This species had a lower mean regional synchrony at at 6 m above the ground, but their ground height synchrony was greater than that observed for D. kuscheli. 4 One possible synchronizing mechanism is seasonality and the dispersal strategies of each species. The main host plants of D. kuscheli are winter cereals sown as pasture for cattle grazing and the synchrony of the crop may affect the general pattern of dispersing individuals of this species. The lack of synchrony observed in T. propinqua populations was probably due to the wider host range of this species.  相似文献

Two sympatric, distantly related Drosophila species, D. affinis and D. melanogaster, interact sexually in the laboratory and in the field. When mature males from one species are tested with females or sexually attractive males from the other species, the mature males perform courtship that, in most cases, is indistinguishable from the courtship that attractive conspecific flies elicit. Moreover, some of the D. affinis females that elicit courtship from D. melanogaster males copulate with them.  相似文献

The seasonal abundance and reproductive cycle of the flyingfish Hirundichthys affinis was studied near Barbados. H. affinis shows large seasonal variation in abundance. They are common between December and June and scarce from July to November. The population size structure of H. affinis was determined by fishing with four different mesh sizes throughout one year. There appear to be two cohorts of H. affinis present in May and June, one of immature fish with a mean size of 19.8cm FL, and one of mature fish with a mean size of 21.7cm FL. From September to April there is only a single cohort of maturing fish with a mean size that increases from 20.4cm FL in September to 22.0cm FL in April. H. affinis spawns throughout the fishing-season (December–June) and shows a peak in spawning activity from March to June. Immature fish are present in Barbados waters from July to November but in very low abundance. Surface water temperature, wind speed and swell height are the only environmental factors with which catch rate of H. affinis showed significant correlation. Catch rate appears to be negatively correlated with temperature, whereas for wind speed and swell height there are optima. Three hypotheses for the seasonal variation in abundance of H. affinis were examined. The hypothesis that this species remains dispersed near Barbados during the off-season was rejected. The other hypotheses were refined. Both post-spawning mortality, resulting in an interval of low abundance between cohorts (non-overlapping generations), and migration of fish away from Barbados at the end of the fishing season, remain possible explanations for the observed seasonal variation in abundance of this species.  相似文献

Abstract. The response of Larrea divaricata and L. cuneifolia to cutting stems 0–20 cm above the ground was studied in the arid piedmont area west of Mendoza, Argentina. The species occur at different elevations and in vegetation zones: L. cuneifolia < 1250 m; L. divaricata between 1250 and 2500 m. Four treatments with 10 replicates were analysed in randomly chosen plants: cut at ground level with lopping shears; cut at ground level with a pick; cut at 10 cm with lopping shears; and cut at 20 cm with lopping shears. The initial and final height, volume, and dry matter (above‐ and below‐ground) were determined. The relation between volume and initial and final dry matter and height was analysed through a factorial MANOVA (p < 0,05), and the functional relation between volume, dry matter and height was estimated by adjusting a regression model. In both species, maximum recovery was reached when cut with shears, and predicted recovery (turnover) was 17‐18 yr. In the two last treatments height was a useful predictor of dry matter. L. divaricata‐dominated plots have a lower biomass, growth rate, and allocation to stems and root than L. cuneifolia‐dominated plots. Regrowth following clipping on an area of 3–10 ha, is sufficient to support the annual needs (cooking and heating) of one family.  相似文献

1. Several species with complex life‐history traits such as amphibians and insects with aquatic immature stages and terrestrial adults avoid ovipositing in pools containing larvivorous fish. This avoidance response was assumed to be a general one for most fish species. 2. The generality of ovipositing Culex to the presence of three, widespread larvivorous fish species was tested in a set of field experiments with artificial oviposition pools using caged fish. 3. Larval performance was further examined under actual predation by these three fish species. 4. Results show that ovipositing females responded strongly to the presence of caged mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis, while showing no significant response to the presence of caged green sunfish, Lepomis cyanellus, or the pirate perch, Aphredoderus sayanus. All three fish species consumed similar amounts of larvae. 5. This is the first example of species‐specific response differences to predators during mosquito oviposition habitat selection. These results point to the existence of predator‐released kairomones affecting mosquito behaviour. These kairomones may either be species‐specific or vary in concentration among fish, and probably have an important role in the understanding of mosquito spatial distribution.  相似文献

The variation of four floral characters (resin-gland area, gland-stigma distance, gland-anther distance, and anther-stigma distance) was analyzed across 15 populations of Dalechampia scandens occurring sympatrically, in various combinations, with five other congeners. Univariate and multivariate analysis of variance and a posteriori comparison tests indicate that there are significant statistical patterns of character divergence away from sympatric congeners for three of the floral characters. These characters, which on the basis of common garden studies appear to be under genetic control, may not vary independently; i.e., genetic control may be overlapping. The characters appear to be functionally related. Populations of Dalechampia scandens occurring sympatrically with congeners possessing relatively large resin glands, large gland-stigma distances and large anther-stigma distances (e.g., D. dioscoreifolia and D. affinis) have significantly smaller resin glands, gland-stigma distances and anther-stigma distances than do populations occurring sympatrically with congeners with relatively small resin glands, gland-stigma distances, and anther-stigma distances (e.g., D. cissifolia, D. heteromorpha and D. schottii). Populations of D. scandens not sympatric with other Dalechampia species generally have intermediately sized structures. The pattern of bidirectional divergence is consistent with the evolutionary scenario that selection against interspecific pollination has resulted in local ecotypic differentiation and character displacement in populations sympatric with ecologically similar congeners.  相似文献

Competitive interactions among the three common green lacewing species of the Chrysoperla complex in Europe are presented. Four morphological characters were registered as semi‐quantitative traits to assess variation between populations. Data were obtained from 325 adults originating from 14 locations. A statistical approach was performed in conjunction with observations of ecological traits and a survey of genetic relationships assessed by mitochondrial DNA cytochrome b analysis. The results indicate character displacement in Chrysoperla affinis when living in sympatry with Chrysoperla carnea. The morphological traits of Ch. affinis sympatric with Ch. carnea differ from those of allopatric Ch. affinis, although the genetic distance between those strains was weak. This was associated with a large difference in microhabitats and premating behaviour. Variation in courtship songs manifests a process of speciation within related populations. Thus, that ecological switching can also promote character displacement is supported. This suggests that character displacement acts through phenotypic variability and mediates negative interactions among species. These findings suggest that the highest rate of speciation occurs in groups of species in which competition is the strongest. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 102 , 292–300.  相似文献

Tsetse flies Glossina palpalis gambiensis and G. tachinoides are among the major vectors of sleeping sickness (Human African Trypanosomiasis‐HAT) and nagana (African Animal Trypanosomiasis – AAT) in West Africa. Both riparian species occur sympatrically in gallery forests of south west Burkina Faso, but little is known of their interspecies relationships although different authors think there may be some competition between them. The aim of this study was to check if sympatric species have different strategies when approaching a host. A man placed in a sticky cube (1 m × 1 m × 1 m) and a sticky black‐blue‐black target (1 m × 1 m) were used to capture tsetse along the Comoe river banks in a Latin Square design. The number and the height at which tsetse were caught by each capture method were recorded according to species and sex. Glossina p. gambiensis was more attracted to human bait than to the target, but both species were captured at a significantly higher height on the target compared with the human bait (P < 0.05). No significant difference in heights was found between G. tachinoides and G. p. gambiensis captured on targets (33 and 35 cm, respectively, P > 0.05). However, catches on human bait showed a significant difference in height between G. tachinoides and G. p. gambiensis (22.5 and 30.6 cm, respectively, P < 0.001). This study showed that these sympatric species had different attack behaviours to humans, which is not the case with the target. The implications of these findings are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract 1 Synthetic blends of bole and foliage volatiles of four sympatric species of conifers were released from pheromone‐baited multiple‐funnel traps to determine if three species of tree‐killing bark beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytidae): (i) exhibited primary attraction to volatiles of their hosts and (ii) discriminated among volatiles of four sympatric species of host and nonhost conifers. 2 Bole and foliage volatiles from Douglas‐fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco, increased the attraction of coastal and interior Douglas‐fir beetles, Dendroctonus pseudotsugae Hopkins, to pheromone‐baited traps. Primary attraction to bole volatiles was observed in interior D. pseudotsugae. Beetles were significantly less attracted to the pheromone bait when it was combined with volatiles of lodgepole pine, Pinus contorta var. latifolia Engelm. or interior fir, Abies lasiocarpa × bifolia. 3 The monoterpene myrcene synergized attraction of mountain pine beetles, Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins, to their aggregation pheromones, but there was no evidence of primary attraction to host volatiles or discrimination among volatiles from the four conifers. 4 There was significant primary attraction of the spruce beetle, Dendroctonus rufipennis Kirby, to bole and foliage volatiles of interior spruce, Picea engelmannii × glauca, but beetles did not discriminate among volatiles of four sympatric conifers when they were combined with pheromone baits. 5 Our results indicate that host volatiles act as kairomones to aid pioneer Douglas‐fir beetles and spruce beetles in host location by primary attraction, and that their role as synergists to aggregation pheromones is significant. For the mountain pine beetle, we conclude that random landing and close range acceptance or rejection of potential hosts would occur in the absence of aggregation pheromones emanating from a tree under attack.  相似文献

The phenology of leaves and stages from immature sori to spore release were studied in natural populations of two perennial herbaceous ferns, Dryopteris affinis ssp. affinis and Polystichum aculeatum, for 2 years in Italy. The Generalized Additive Model for Location, Scale and Shape (GAMLSS) was used to predict a particular phenological event from the climatic variables. Both fern species are evergreen with leaf lifespan of 13–14 months in D. affinis ssp. affinis and 15–24 months in P. aculeatum. Their leaf production is seasonal with most flushed in spring. In D. affinis ssp. affinis the decaying of old leaves is sudden whereas in P. aculeatum it is gradual, and in both types the decaying is accelerated just as the new leaves emerge. Temperature is the best predictor for the development of sori and spore release. The end of spore release and leaf emergence are positively affected by temperature and negatively affected by rainfall and snow cover for P. aculeatum. An almost similar response to climatic factors of emergent and senescent leaves and their phenology supportsthe hypothesis that old leaves serve as nutrient storage organs for new leaf growth. Comparison the phenological patterns between the 2 years indicated that the time lapses between each phenological event were the same within seasons for D. affinis ssp. affinis but show some differences for P. aculeatum. We also hypothesize that endogenous factors may play an important role in the phenology of P. aculeatum.  相似文献

A phytosociological study was conducted in a riparian forest of the Rio Paraguai near Corumbá and Ladário in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The topographic distribution of species was correlated with durations of the river's seasonal floodings and the cumulative time of flooding between 1974 and 1995. One hundred and eight contiguous 10×10 m plots were systematically established. All individuals with more than 15 cm of girth at breast height (gbh=1.3 m) were sampled. A total of 695 individuals distributed among 37 species, 35 genera and 23 families were found. The Shannon index (H′) for species diversity was 2.7. The highest importance value (IV) was found for Inga vera ssp. affinis, followed by Triplaris gardneriana, Ocotea diospyrifolia, Crataeva tapia and Vochysia divergens. The plots were classified into two groups according to their distance from the margin, applying Ward's method of classification and principal coordinate analysis (PCO) on the same Bray Curtis distance matrix. The topical environments were divided into four bands by Two-Way Indicator Species Analysis (TWINSPAN), and the species were also grouped into four groups. Flooding in these groups ranged from regular inundation in all 23 years of the historical series of the Ladário gauge to sporadic flooding for a maximum of 2 consecutive years.

Question: What characteristics of local biotic neighbourhood is the best proxy of competitive effects experienced by plants in a herbaceous community: (1) total above‐ground biomass, (2) root mass or (3) relative above‐ground abundance of selected species? Location: Grassland at ca. 1100 m a.s.l. in the Krkono?e Mts., northern Czech Republic. Methods: We implanted two phytometer species, Antho‐xanthum alpinum and Festuca rubra, into a mountain grassland, and examined their response to local variation in (1) total above‐ground biomass, (2) root mass at three soil depths, and (3) relative abundance of individual species above‐ground. Results : Performance of both phytometer species was determined much more consistently by the mass of neighbouring roots and by species composition of neighbours than by the total above‐ground biomass. The two phytometer species showed different responses to these parameters. The most important relationships were (1) negative relationship between performance of Anthoxanthum and mass of neighbouring roots at 0–3 cm, (2) positive relationship between performance of Festuca and mass of neighbouring roots at 3–6 cm, and (3) negative relationship between performance of Festuca and relative abundance of Festuca in the neighbourhood. Conclusions: Neighbouring root mass and above‐ground species composition are better determinants of biotic interactions than total above‐ground biomass of neighbours in the studied mountain grassland. However, the relationships found are not necessarily due to variation in competitive intensity but can be due to other hidden factors as well, e.g. local availability of resources.  相似文献

The impact of different reproductive barriers on species or population isolation may vary in different stages of speciation depending on evolutionary forces acting within species and through species’ interactions. Genetic incompatibilities between interacting species are expected to reinforce prezygotic barriers in sympatric populations and lead to cascade reinforcement between conspecific populations living within and outside the areas of sympatry. We tested these predictions and studied whether and how the strength and target of reinforcement between Drosophila montana and Drosophila flavomontana vary between sympatric populations with different histories and species abundances. All barriers between D. montana females and D. flavomontana males were nearly complete, while in the reciprocal cross strong postzygotic isolation was accompanied by prezygotic barriers whose strength varied according to population composition. Sexual isolation between D. flavomontana females and D. montana males was increased in long‐established sympatric populations, where D. flavomontana is abundant, while postmating prezygotic (PMPZ) barriers were stronger in populations where this species is a new invader and still rare and where female discrimination against heterospecific males was lower. Strengthening of sexual and PMPZ barriers in this cross also induced cascade reinforcement of respective barriers between D. flavomontana populations, which is a classic signature of reinforcement process.  相似文献

Two hybridization zones were taken as an example (the russet ground squirrel (Spermophilus major) and the speckled ground squirrel (S. suslicus), the russet ground squirrel and the yellow ground squirrel S. fulvus) to show that biotope characteristics determine segregation of sympatric species in contact colonies. The heterogeneity of biotopes with regard to the requirements of sympatric species promotes their long-term and steady dispersal and, in rare cases, sporadic hybridization. A biotope with a homogenous environment enables wide interspecies hybridization and a rapid increase in the ratio of hybrids in the colony.  相似文献

Electrophoretic variation was examined in 14 populations of tetraploid Deschampsia mackenzieana, an endemic of the Athabasca sand dunes in northern Saskatchewan, Canada, and 20 populations of its geographically widespread diploid progenitor, D. cespitosa. Three of the D. cespitosa populations were sympatric with the endemic on the Athabasca sand dunes. Populations of the endemic were found to have fewer alleles per locus (1.22 vs. 1.52), fewer alleles per polymorphic locus (2.17 vs. 2.70), lower percent polymorphic loci (18.9 vs. 30.5), and lower heterozygosity (0.062 vs. 0.119) than progenitor populations. Species level genetic diversity parameters also indicated that D. mackenzieana was genetically depauperate relative to its progenitor D. cespitosa. Deschampsia mackenzieana had no novel alleles but did share one allele with sympatric progenitor populations that did not occur in populations of D. cespitosa from other habitats. Although both species were found to partition most of their genetic diversity within populations, D. mackenzieana did have more of its limited genetic diversity partitioned among populations than D. cespitosa. The close genetic relationship between D. mackenzieana and sympatric populations of D. cespitosa may suggest the endemic tetraploid evolved from the sympatric diploid gene pool in the Athabasca sand dune region. The low levels of genetic diversity in D. mackenzieana suggest a restricted origin with limited gene flow from the progenitor since speciation.  相似文献

  • Distyly is a mechanism promoting cross‐pollination within a balanced polymorphism. Numerous studies show that the degree of inter‐morph sexual organ reciprocity (SOR) within species relates to its pollen‐mediated gene flow. Similarly, a lower interspecific SOR should promote interspecific isolation when congeners are sympatric, co‐blooming and share pollinators. In this comparative study, we address the significance of SOR at both intra‐ and interspecific levels.
  • Seventeen allopatric and eight sympatric populations representing four Primula species (P. anisodora, P. beesiana, P. bulleyana and P. poissonii) native to the Himalaya‐Hengduan Mountains were measured for eight floral traits in both long‐ and short‐styled morphs. GLMM and spatial overlap methods were used to compare intra‐ and interspecific SOR.
  • While floral morphology differed among four Primula species, SOR within species was generally higher than between species, but in species pairs P. poissonii/P. anisodora and P. beesiana/P. bulleyana, the SOR was high at both intra‐ and interspecific levels. We did not detect a significant variation in intraspecific SOR or interspecific SOR when comparing allopatric versus sympatric populations for all species studied.
  • As intraspecific SOR increased, disassortative mating may be promoted. As interspecific SOR decreased, interspecific isolation between co‐flowering species pairs also may increase. Hybridisation between congeners occurred when interspecific SOR increased in sympatric populations, as confirmed in two species pairs, P. poissonii/P. anisodora and P. beesiana/P. bulleyana.

Inferring evolutionary relationships among recently diverged lineages is necessary to understand how isolating barriers produce independent lineages. Here, we investigate the phylogenetic relationships between three incompletely isolated and closely related mushroom‐feeding Drosophila species. These species form the Drosophila subquinaria species complex and consist of one Eurasian species (D. transversa) and two widespread North American species (D. subquinaria and D. recens) that are sympatric in central Canada. Although patterns of pre‐ and post‐mating isolation among these species are well characterized, previous work on their phylogenetic relationships is limited and conflicting. In this study, we generated a multi‐locus data set of 29 loci from across the genome sequenced in a population sample from each species, and then, we inferred species relationships and patterns of introgression. We find strong statistical support that D. subquinaria is paraphyletic, showing that samples from the geographic region sympatric with D. recens are most closely related to D. recens, whereas samples from the geographic region allopatric with D. recens are most closely related to D. transversa. We present several lines of evidence that both incomplete lineage sorting and gene flow are causing phylogenetic discordance. We suggest that ongoing gene flow primarily from D. recens into D. subquinaria in the sympatric part of their ranges causes phylogenetic uncertainty in the evolutionary history of these species. Our results highlight how population genetic data can be used to disentangle the sources of phylogenetic discordance among closely related species.  相似文献
