Chromosome studies in six wild-caught specimens of Cebus apella xanthosternos showed a distinctive chromosome pair number 11 that made it possible to distinguish this subspecies from other Cebus apella. The characteristic chromosome pair had intercalar heterochromatin unlike the “standard” chromosome type of Cebus apella and other species of the same genus, in which this chromosome pair shows a large, terminal, heterochromatic block. A comparison at the chromosomal level between different Cebus apella populations suggests that chromosome 11 in Cebus apella xanthosternos is a derived chromosome that has probably become fixed in this subspecies, either by selection or by drift in a small isolated population.  相似文献

Cytogenetic studies have been carried out in 39 specimens of C. apella of different origins. Three different morphologies, one affecting the long arm of chromosome 4 and two affecting pair 17, have been detected. In each case, they can be related by paracentric inversions. Heterochromatin polymorphisms affecting terminal or interstitial C+ regions have also been observed. The length of the terminal heterochromatic region in the long arms of chromosome 11 is variable in C. apella sp., in C. a. paraguayanus and absent in the C. a. nigritus specimens studied. Interstitial C + bands can be observed in the long arms of the biarmed chromosomes 4 and 6, and in the long arms of the acrocentric pairs 12, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20, and 21. Interstitial C + bands in the long arms of chromosomes 4, 12, 17, and 19 are present in all animals studied, although their size is variable, especially in the case of chromosomes 17 and 19. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

We describe the C-bands in the karyotypes of Lagothrix lagothricha cana, Cebus apella and Cebus capucinus. The C-banding patterns show both a high degree of polymorphism as well as the presence of terminal and interstitial C-bands. Varying amounts of heterochromatin result in dimorphism of some chromosome pairs. The high incidence of chromosome rearrangements found in the Cebidae may be due to the presence of terminal and interstitial C-bands.  相似文献

The pattern of late DNA replication in the allocyclic X chromosome has been studied in the primary fibroblasts of two neotropical primates (Cebus apella and Leontopithecus rosalia chrysomelas). A comparison with previous reports showed a pattern identical with that of (1) the allocyclic X chromosome of human fibroblasts, and (2) the allocyclic X chromosome of rhesus and Cebus lymphocytes. Our results show that at least in one species (C. apella), and probably in rhesus and Leontopithecus, there is no tissue-specific difference between the late DNA replication patterns of the allocyclic X chromosome as there is between human lymphocytes and fibroblasts.  相似文献

Karyotypes of three species of South American primates (Cebus apella, Cebus albifrons, and Lagothrix lagothricha) were studied using high-resolution banding techniques, and were compared to the human karyotype. The number of homologies was very high for the three species. Some of the breakpoints implicated in chromosome rearrangements corresponded with human fragile sites. The fragile sites in human chromosomes often correspond with the localization of latent centromeres in the platyrrhines or with large heterochromatic regions that may have been lost or newly added during evolution.  相似文献

Research programs involving the study of genetic variation of proteins have been carried out both in humans and catarrhine primates but rarely in New World species. Considering the great possibilities offered by protein variations as genetic markers in systematic and evolutionary studies in this group of organisms, the authors are specially interested in the investigation of genetic polymorphisms of blood proteins in Amazonian primates. In this paper we describe the electro phoretic patterns of erythrocyte esterases obtained from blood samples of 57 Cebus apella specimens. Blood hemolysates from Cebus display four main set of bands in azo-coupled stained gels. These bands are identified as esterases P, A1, A2 and B by their electro phoretic migration, substrate specificity and eserine reaction. The use of the fluoregenic reagent 4-methylumbelliferyl acetate revealed the presence of a fifth set of enzymes not detected by the azo-coupled staining method. This ser of enzymes, probably a polymorphic genetic system, was named ESD as in humans.  相似文献

Cebus Apella (C. apella) is a species of Nonhuman Primate (NHP) used for biomedical research because it is phylogenetically similar and shares anatomical commonalities with humans. Here, the gut microbiota of three C. apella were examined in the different regions of the intestinal tract. Using metagenomics, the gut microbiota associated with the luminal content and mucus layer for each intestinal region was identified, and functionality was investigated by quantifying the levels of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) produced. The results of this study show a high degree of similarity in the intestinal communities among C. apella subjects, with multiple shared characteristics. First, the communities in the lumen were more phylogenetically diverse and rich compared to the mucus layer communities throughout the entire intestinal tract. The small intestine communities in the lumen displayed a higher Shannon diversity index compared to the colon communities. Second, all the communities were dominated by aero‐tolerant taxa such as Streptococcus, Enterococcus, Abiotrophia, and Lactobacillus, although there was preferential colonization of specific taxa observed. Finally, the primary SCFA produced throughout the intestinal tract was acetic acid, with some propionic acid and butyric acid detected in the colon regions. The small intestine microbiota produced significantly less SCFAs compared to the communities in the colon. Collectively, these data provide an in‐depth report on the composition, distribution, and SCFA production of the gut microbiota along the intestinal tract of the C. apella NHP animal model.  相似文献

We examined the relationship among carrying, food-sharing, and hand preference in tufted capuchins (Cebus apella). The rationale was to evaluate further the use of Cebus as an alternative primate model to Pan for behavior relevant to early hominid evolution. We first examined bipedalism and food-sharing within an established social group, and then examined the direction and strength of hand preference for food carrying in an expanded sample. Several aspects of capuchin behavior warrant discussion. First, bipedal carrying and food-sharing occurred more frequently when we provided bulky foods than when we provided smaller foods. Second, food-sharing was characterized by passive tolerance, rather than active giving, between subjects. Third, subjects shared food primarily with immatures and followed a pattern of reciprocal exchange. Finally, we found no evidence for population-level hand preference for carrying. We posit that an array of behavioral similarities among Cebus, Pan, and Homo evolved through convergent processes, and in this regard capuchins can be seen as an alternative primate model to chimpanzees for the evolution of early hominid behavior.  相似文献

Karyotypes of 82 individuals from five Platyrrhini species (Alouatta caraya, Aotus azarae, Callithrix jacchus, Cebus apella, andSaimiri sciureus) were studied and compared using a G-banding technique. Cytogenetic analysis showed full chromosome or full arm homologies among these geographically neighbouring species. A small number of chromosomal rearrangements (inversions, deletions, and translocations) could be detected among these taxa. These five species are closely related in chromosomal evolution. An interesting correspondance was found betweenCebus apella chromosomes and those of the other four species.Alouatta caraya andCebus apella are the closest species.Callithrix jacchus andAotus azarae would have the most separated karyotypes.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the hierarchical complexity of combinatorial manipulation in capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella). Two experiments were conducted. In Experiment 1 capuchins were presented with an apparatus designed to accommodate the use of probing tools. In Experiment 2 the same capuchins were presented with sets of nesting containers. Five of the ten subjects used probing tools and seven subjects placed objects in the containers. The capuchins' behavior reflected three hierarchically organized combinatorial patterns displayed by chimpanzees and human infants. Although the capuchins sometimes displayed the two more complex patterns (“pot” and “subassembly”), their combinatorial behavior was dominated by the simplest pattern (“pairing”). In this regard capuchins may not attain the same grammar of manipulative action that has been reported for chimpanzees and young human children. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Little is known about the milk composition of nonhuman primates, and it has never been examined in capuchin monkeys (genus Cebus). This article reports on the macronutrient milk composition (fat, crude protein (CP), lactose, dry matter (DM), and total gross energy (GE)) of captive housed tufted capuchins (Cebus apella) (n=8). C. apella milk averaged 5.22% fat, 2.40% CP, 6.94% lactose, 16.48% DM, and 0.89 kcal/g. Fat was the most variable macronutrient and was significantly higher in samples collected after 2 months of lactation. To explore the adaptive significance of C. apella milk composition, results were compared with data on milk composition from a closely related cebid, Saimiri boliviensis boliviensis, and another large‐brained anthropoid, Homo sapiens. C. apella milk was only significantly different from Saimiri milk in CP and the proportion of energy from CP. Compared with human milk, C. apella milk was lower in lactose but higher in fat, CP, DM, GE, and the proportion of energy from CP. Results from this small dataset suggest that among anthropoid primates, the macronutrient composition of milk is influenced by phylogeny, may vary relative to infant growth rates, but may not be related in any direct way to relative brain size. Traditionally, scientists believed that crowded housing conditions increased aggression in animals. Recent research on captive primates fails to support a linear relationship between population density and aggressive behavior. Our study is the first to investigate the effects of acute crowding on a New World primate. We observed brown capuchins (Cebus apella) under 2 different spatial conditions: a control that offered the full indoor space in the enclosure and a short-term experimental condition that restricted the capuchins to approximately half the amount of space of the control condition. We compared rates of self-grooming, aggression, contact sitting, social grooming, and play between both conditions. We conducted a mixed factorial ANOVA at the individual level while taking subject sex and age class into account. Intense aggression, play, and social grooming decreased significantly in crowded conditions, suggesting that capuchins avoid social encounters if spatially confined. Their strategy for coping with acute crowding via a decrease in all forms of social behavior is intermediate between chimpanzee and macaque strategies in similar experiments. The only behavior to increase under crowding was a nonsocial, self-directed behavior with the potential of reducing arousal: self-grooming.  相似文献

We examined the production of stone took by capuchins (Cebus apella). Eleven subjects used five reduction techniques to produce 346 stone tools (48 cores and 298 flakes). They produced a sharp edge on 83% of the cores and largest flakes. Three monkeys later used a sample of these objects as cutting tools. These results demonstrate that monkeys produce lithic tools analogous to those produced by Oldowan hominids.  相似文献

We know the capuchin (Cebus apella) is an omnivorous monkey; we have a considerable amount of information given by native hunters that it feeds on small-sized species of amphibians and reptiles, young birds and birds' eggs, as well as various kinds of fruit and insects. However, how the monkey discovers, captures, and eats such food has not yet been reported. Neither has it been reported that the capuchin feeds on certain species of them purposely, not accidentally. The capuchin observed by the author fed on a kind of frog (Hylidae), which inhabits Guadua (Bambusa guadua) and each individual used the same method to discover, capture, and eat the frog. It can be suggested that the behavior in such a series are adaptive ones which guarantee the capuchin a constant supply of frogs.  相似文献

The author undertook a field survey of the capuchin (Cebus apella) lasting 60 days from December 1976 to January 1977, and determined the basic daily activity of its groups and spacing of group members in the day time. Furthermore, based on studies of various types of interactions between individuals of the groups, he was able to show that (1) decisive rank orders exist both among adults and among sub-adults of both sexes; (2) grooming at the resting time is peculiar to adult males; (3) with quite mild agonistic interactions being maintained, a high tolerance exists between the group members; (4) alpha males represent individuals which can be called leaders of groups; and (5) a strong psychological or spiritual bond exists among the adult males, which can be termed a “male-bond.” Furthermore, according to comparative studies on some adjoining groups, it was found that the group structure is strongly influenced by the individuality or character of the adult males of each group. The present findings are generally in agreement with those forC. apella studied by the author and other researchers in other localities. It can be safely said therefore that these findings are probably common to this species of monkey. Based on a comparison with findings for three other species ofCebus, the author attempts to clarify the points of difference betweenC. apella and these three other species ofCebus from the viewpoint of behavioral science and sociology.  相似文献

The sudden death of a Cebus apella female (>19 years old) on an experimental hyperlipidic diet during three years is described. The gross lesions were hemothorax, atherosclerotic plaques in the aortic curve, and an aneurysm in the ascending aorta. Histologically, an enlargement of the intima in the ascending aorta with hyalinization and a thrombus were observed. The media was thinned and showed sclerosis and hemorrhage extending to the tunica adventicia.  相似文献

Animals respond to novel stimuli via explorative or neophobic behavior or both. The coexistence of these responses toward novel foods may be a successful adaptive strategy for a generalist species such as Cebus apella, because it allows the gradual introduction of new foods into the diet and reduces the risk of poisoning by ingestion of large amounts of toxic compounds (Glander, 1982; Milton, 1993; Visalberghi, 1994). Neophobia has been studied mostly in captivity. We investigated responsiveness to novelty in a group of 25–30 wild tufted capuchins (Cebus apella) in Iguazü National Park (Argentina). They had been habituated to visiting sites where bananas were provided on three elevated platforms. We presented novel stimuli on an adjacent platform. There were 4 experimental conditions with 10 sessions each: the Novel Food condition, the Novel Object condition, the Control condition, in which the platform was empty, and the Banana condition. In the Novel Food and Novel Object conditions, a new stimulus—food or object—was on the platform during each session. The Banana condition provided information on capuchin response to a familiar preferred food. Overall, capuchins were less responsive toward novel objects than toward novel foods; however, although cautious, they ate small amounts of the novel foods. Age affected individual responsiveness toward novel foods, whereas sex affected responsiveness toward novel objects. Capuchins ignored the empty platform. Our findings are in agreement with the idea that tufted capuchins can adapt to new habitats by gradually exploiting new food sources.  相似文献

Tufted capuchins are diurnal New World primates whose social interactions involve vocal and visual communication. We aimed to describe their facial displays and assessed the use (in relation to rank and age/sex classes of the sender or the receiver or both) and the social function of the most frequent ones. More specifically, we analyzed the temporal relationship between each facial display and specific classes of behaviors, e.g., play, aggression, performed by the sender and by the receiver (Pre-Post-Event Histogram [PPEH]). We observed 20 captives, belonging to 2 groups, for a total of 320 h. The capuchins displayed relaxed open-mouth, silent bared-teeth, open-mouth threat, lip-smacking, open-mouth silent bared-teeth, scalp lifting, and, rarely, protruded lips. The repertoire and the meanings of the different facial expressions are similar to those described for Catarrhini. In some cases, such as for the silent bared-teeth display, the meaning depends on the age of the sender. Silent bared-teeth is associated with play in juveniles and with submissiveness of the sender to the receiver and affiliative interactions in adults. The finding, and the fact that silent bared-teeth display is used during courtship (Carosi and Visalberghi, 2002), support Preuschoft and van Hooff’s (1995, 1997) power asymmetry hypothesis of motivational emancipation, according to which there is convergence between affiliative and submissive behaviors in species with a high degree of social tolerance.  相似文献
