Sea World has maintained killer whales (Orcinus orca) since 1965. The total killer whale inventory (1965–1993) has included 39 whales (25 females, 14 males); 28 were wild-caught and 11 captive-born, including one second-generation calf. As of September, 1993, there were 19 whales in the breeding program. Ten of these whales (53%) were captive-born, either at Sea World or other facilities in North America. The live wild-caught whales ranged in estimated age from 12–27 years (x? ± sd = 17.6 ± 4.2 years). The captive-born whales ranged in age from <1 to 8 years. In the Sea World breeding program (through September, 1993), there have been nine live births and one stillbirth, with eight calves part of the current inventory. Births occurred from July to February. Calving intervals ranged from 32–58 months. Female age at birth of first calves ranged from 8 years to an estimated 17 years (x? ± sd = 12.7 ± 3.0 years). Gestation, based on conception estimates from serum progesterone analysis, averaged 17 months (x? ± sd = 517 ± 20 days), but successful pregnancies with viable calves occurred from 15–18 months (468–539 days). Females, in the presence and absence of males, were polyestrus with periods of cycling interspersed with individually variable noncycling (presumed anestrous) periods ranging from 3–16 months. Mean serum progesterone levels (±se) were as follows: noncycling periods = 121 ± 20 pg/ml; peak elevations during nonconceptive ovulatory (estrous) cycles = 3,962 ± 2,280 pg/ml; first pregnancies = 14,592 ± 3,854 pg/ml; second pregnancies = 8,389 ± 395 pg/ml; and third pregnancy = 8,180 ± 4,556. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Age-related changes in testosterone, progesterone and estradiol 17-beta were determined by radioimmunoassay (RIA) in the serum of 155 male buffalo calves of varying ages. The calves were classified into 17 age groups. The mean weight of calves increased from 33.6 +/- 9.6 kg at one week of age to 531 +/- 41.4 kg at 42 months. The testosterone levels were less than 100 pg/ml from birth until 15 months of age, followed by peak concentrations of 422 +/- 79 pg/ml at 24 to 30 months and 793 +/- 193 pg/ml at 42 to 48 months (corresponding to puberty and maturity, respectively). The progesterone levels were higher in newly born calves and mature bulls. Otherwise, the levels continued to be low throughout the period of growth and development. Estradiol 17-beta was significantly higher in postnatal calves up to two months of age. The testosterone revealed a positive correlation with weight and age while E2 17-beta showed a negative correlation with age. These results do not support a direct role of peripheral progesterone and estradiol 17-beta in the onset of puberty and sexual maturity of buffalo bulls.  相似文献

Baseline serum levels of progesterone and total immunoreactive estrogens were determined for intact and ovariectomized captive female Atlantic bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), as well as newly captured wild adult females. Stimulation of ovarian follicular growth and ovulation was attempted by intramuscular injection of pregnant mare's serum gonadotropin (PMSG). High doses of PMSG were required to increase serum estrogen levels. When PMSG was followed by an injection of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), ovulation was presumed to have occurred as indicated by subsequent high levels of serum progesterone. From these observations, it appears that 1) females with progesterone levels greater than 3000 pg/ml over an extended period are pregnant, 2) Tursiops truncatus is capable of spontaneous ovulation in captivity without gonadotropin therapy, 3) captive female dolphins, although relatively resistant to PMSG, can be induced to ovulate using a combination of high intramuscular-injected doses of PMSG followed by hCG, and 4) spontaneous ovulation is likely to follow an induced ovulation.  相似文献

Spatial variation in vital rates can affect the dynamics and persistence of a population. We evaluated the prediction that age-specific probabilities of survival and first reproduction for Weddell seals would vary as a function of birth location in Erebus Bay, Antarctica. We used multi-state mark–resight models and 25 years of data to estimate demographic rates for female seals. We predicted that probabilities of survival and first reproduction would be higher for seals born at near-shore colonies or more southerly-located colonies with consistent ice conditions. Contrary to predictions, results revealed higher age-specific probabilities of first reproduction at offshore colonies relative to near-shore colonies and no spatial variation in survival rates. For 7-year old females (average age at 1st reproduction=7.6 years old) born at offshore colonies to mothers aged 10.8 years (average maternal age), probability of first reproduction was 0.43 (SE=0.07), whereas probability of first reproduction for females born at near-shore colonies was 0.30 (SE=0.05) based on estimates from our top-ranked model. Breeding probabilities following first reproduction were also higher at offshore colonies. Thus, our results (1) provide evidence of spatial variation in breeding probabilities, (2) reveal the importance of birth location on a female's vital rates, and (3) suggest that the effect persisted for many years. Birth-colony effects may be attributed to spatial variation in prey availability, or to heterogeneity in female quality in this population. If females who are superior competitors consistently chose offshore colonies for pupping, pups born at these locations may have inherited those superior qualities and displayed higher probabilities of first reproduction, relative to seals born at other colonies. Further research into physical or food-related differences among colonies may offer insight into spatial variation in breeding probabilities documented in this paper.  相似文献

Social connectivity is important for measuring the fitness of common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). While interactions in fission-fusion societies vary between individuals, studies show that repeated interactions enhance reproduction and foraging success. Injuries that potentially remove an individual from its association network may disrupt these interactions. Using data from the long-term resident dolphin community in Sarasota Bay, Florida, we investigated how anthropogenic injuries affect the dolphins' social associations by examining the differences before and after injury to individuals. We examined group size, strength, eigenvector centrality, clustering coefficient, and number of triangles and analyzed whether the animal's sex, age class, type of injury, or human intervention affected these values. We found that while group size did not change, injured dolphins had fewer preferred associates (HWI > 0.14) and were found in more fluid groups immediately after injury, but started returning to normal association levels after 2 years. This initial decrease in connectivity was not related to the age, sex, type of injury, or intervention. Despite the fluidity in individual associations, the strongest bonds remained stable, those between mothers and calves and those between male alliance partners. These findings provide some of the first information relating injuries and social networks for animals.  相似文献

Plasma concentrations of oxytocin and progesterone have been measured by radioimmunoassay in jugular venous blood obtained daily from 5 sheep during 2 estrous cycles and in early pregnancy.Concentrations of oxytocin were relatively high (15–30 pg/ml) during the luteal phase of the cycle, but fell at estrus (to 1–17 pg/ml). A fall in oxytocin was also observed on day 15 of pregnancy, when, as expected, progesterone levels remained high. It is suggested that raised basal levels of oxytocin are unlikely to cause the increasing uterine release of prostaglandin F which occurs at the end of the estrous cycle.  相似文献

There has been much research studying the effect of homotypic embryonic neural tissue transplantation in the central nervous system of rats and cats, with promising results. The benefits of transplantation are dependent upon the appropriate aged donor. Therefore, it is critical that the exact age of the embryonic tissue be known. For this reason we have developed a method of determining, indirectly, the pregnancy status and embryonic age in the domestic cat (Felis catus) using serum progesterone levels. Serum progesterone levels were monitored in 16 domestic cats during 26 breeding trials. Blood samples were taken prior to and 6 days after natural breeding to determine if ovulation had occurred, indirectly indicating pregnancy status. By knowing the exact date bred and if it resulted in pregnancy, an accurate embryonic age was calculated. A day 6 post-breeding serum progesterone concentration of less than 5.0 ng/ml was considered a negative indication of pregnancy, greater than 5.0 ng/ml a positive indication of pregnancy. Pregnancy was confirmed by abdominal palpation 21 to 26 days after breeding. Serum progesterone levels taken on the sixth day after observed breeding provide an accurate, indirect evaluation of pregnancy in the timed pregnant domestic cat (81%, p = 0.003).  相似文献

The effects of body condition at calving and breeding and temporary calf removal prior to the start of the breeding season on reproductive performance of 323 cows from two breed groups were studied over two breeding seasons. Body condition score at calving was significantly and positively correlated with two body condition indices, which were based on weight-to-height ratio measured at calving and at the start of the breeding season. While the two body condition indices were strongly associated with the age of the cow, the body condition score, based on palpation and visual appraisal, was less affected by the age of the cow. Cows with a body condition score of 3.0 at calving had a shorter calving interval (P<0.02), higher pregnancy rate (P<0.08), and higher number of calves born (P<0.10) than cows which had body condition scores lower than 3.0 at calving. Temporary (48 h) calf removal prior to the start of the breeding season did not have a significant influence on the calving interval, pregnancy rate or the number of calves born nor on the weaning weights of their calves. Differences in reproductive performance between the two breed groups of cows were not significant.  相似文献

We trained a mature male bottlenose dolphin, Tursiops truncatus, to provide semen samples on command. After completion of the 10-week training period, semen was collected twice weekly and blood was sampled twice monthly for a period of 28 months. Total sperm per ejaculate ranged from near 0 to 54.6 x 10(9) (n = 1332). Sperm densities from each session ranged from no sperm to 1,587 x 10(6)/ml (n = 241). Testosterone levels ranged from 1.1 to 54.4 ng/ml (n = 79). Seasonal variations were observed in total sperm per ejaculate, sperm density per ml of ejaculate, and in serum testosterone levels. Peak sperm densities were detected during September and October of three consecutive breeding seasons. Serum testosterone levels peaked in June, decreased during July and August, and were lowest in September and October, the period of greatest sperm density. Peak sperm production and density were coincident with the peak period of breeding activity but at a time when serum testosterone levels were lowest.  相似文献

To investigate the endocrine factors in Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata) responsible for the suppression of the estrous cycle during the first reproductive season after delivery (150–360 days postpartum), peripheral blood was taken to measure plasma concentrations of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), progesterone, estradiol‐17β, immunoreactive (ir)‐inhibin, and cortisol. The results demonstrated that during the breeding season of lactating Japanese monkeys, circulating concentrations of FSH (1.7–2.7 ng/ml), LH (308.5–461.0 pg/ml), estradiol‐17β (<62.6 pg/ml), and progesterone (145.0–453.0 pg/ml) remained low and were similar to the nadir levels observed during both the normal menstrual cycles and the nonbreeding season. Concentrations of ir‐inhibin, which is secreted from both follicles and corpus luteum in female Japanese monkeys, were also low (300.5–585.0 pg/ml). This strongly suggests that no follicular development occurs during lactation. Serum concentrations of cortisol (261.0–519 ng/ml) were higher during lactation than during the nonbreeding season. Since babies were often seen suckling their mothers during the study, the results indicate that the increased cortisol levels were associated with suckling‐induced secretion of corticotrophin‐releasing hormone (CRH) and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). The results of this study indicate that a long period of postpartum infertility in lactating Japanese monkeys, with apparent inhibition of follicle growth and anovulation, is due to weak gonadotropin stimulation, which may occur as the result of a suckling stimulus. The peripheral blood plasma concentration of estrone, progesterone and 15-keto-13, 14-dihydroprostaglandin F2alpha (PGF2alpha metabolite) were determined by radioimmunoassay techniques during the peripartal period in 5 buffalo cows belonging to a river type breed. Estrone levels started to increase from below 200 pg/ml about 15 days prior to parturition, and reached high concentrations (400-750 pg/ml) during the last 5 days of pregnancy. The estrone concentration decreased to baseline levels after delivery. The concentration of progesterone fluctuated between 800 and 2000 pg/ml until 15 days before calving and showed a gradual increase during the last 15 days of pregnancy. The progesterone levels declined abruptly on the day of calving and remained below 100 pg/ml for up to 60 days post-partum. Increased levels of the prostaglandin metabolite were recorded from 15 days prior to parturition with further increases occurring during the last 3 days of pregnancy. PGF2alpha metabolite levels declined gradually after parturition, reaching base line levels 15-20 days after calving.  相似文献

The evolutionary potential in the timing of recruitment and reproduction may be crucial for the ability of populations to buffer against environmental changes, allowing them to avoid unfavourable breeding conditions. The evolution of a trait in a local population is determined by its heritability and selection. In the present study, we performed pedigree‐based quantitative genetic analyses for two life‐history traits (recruiting age and laying date) using population data of the storm petrel over an 18‐year period in two adjacent breeding colonies (only 150 m apart) that share the same environmental conditions. In both traits, natal colony effect was the main source of the phenotypic variation among individuals, and cohort variance for recruitment age and additive genetic variance for laying date were natal colony‐specific. We found significant heritability only in laying date and, more specifically, only in birds born in one of the colonies. The difference in genetic variance between the colonies was statistically significant. Interestingly, selection on earlier breeding birds was detected only in the colony in which heritable variation in laying date was found. Therefore, local evolvability for a life‐history trait may vary within a unexpectedly small spatial scale, through the diversifying natural selection and insulating gene flow. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 106 , 439–446.  相似文献

Data from a 35-year study of rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) at Madingley, Cambridge, were used to investigate sex ratio biases associated with maternal rank. Data were available from two colonies, the Old colony (1960–81) and New colony (1982–93). Overall, top-ranking mothers gave birth to 30.9% sons, while non-top mothers gave birth to 58.4% sons. Among non-top mothers, middle- and bottom-ranking ones had 59.0 and 55.0% sons, respectively. Top mothers' daughter biases were strongest in matrilines with two adult females in the year the infants were conceived (15.4 sons and 14.3% sons in Old and New colonies). Non-top mothers' son biases (88.9 and 71.0% in Old and New colonies) were strongest in matrilines with 3 females. The findings are discussed in relation to the colonies' small matriline sizes and data on breeding performance and infant survival, which indicate the costs to mothers of different rank of having different sex infants. Overall, top-ranking mothers were more likely to breed in two successive years (78.6%) than non-top mothers (56.7%). Infant survival to 7 days was significantly higher in the New colony (89.0%) than the Old colony (75.3%), with daughters born to Old colony mothers doing especially poorly. We point out that between-group and between-species comparisons of sex ratio effects depend critically on how females are assigned to rank categories, and require information about divergences of sex ratios from 50:50 in each category. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Circulating concentrations of progesterone, progesterone-binding plasma proteins (PBPP) and oestradiol-17 beta in pregnant porcupines remained relatively low until Days 25-30 post coitum. Progesterone values peaked (102-180 ng/ml; N = 3) 42-60 days post coitum and the rapid increase in oestradiol-17 beta concentrations approximated that of progesterone with peak values (170-210 pg/ml) being attained 60-85 days post coitum. The pattern of PBPP synthesis, as suggested by circulating concentrations, was closely related to that of plasma progesterone, with values remaining low (less than 20 pmol/ml) until Day 31 post coitum, reaching peak levels at Days 50-56 and Days 73-77 post coitum. The production of PBPP during pregnancy is, as in related New World hystricomorph species, considered to be a mechanism which facilitates a reduction in the rate of progesterone metabolism during pregnancy.  相似文献

Serial blood samples were taken from eight lactating women while they were nursing their babies 1–4 months postpartum, and from four lactating controls while they were not nursing. The plasma was assayed for oxytocin by radioimmunoassay after extraction with activated Vycor glass powder. In the suckling mothers mean plasma oxytocin rose from 5.4 pg/ml before nursing to 13.0 pg/ml during nursing. Oxytocin levels changed rapidly from minute to minute, with individual peaks as high as 54 pg/ml. Oxytocin levels in the control mothers averaged 4.4 pg/ml.  相似文献

Sexual segregation seems to be common in bottlenose dolphins, whereby males and females live in different pods that mix mainly for mating. Male dolphins often use aggressive behaviour to mate with females, while females with calves may have different activity and dietary requirements to males and different susceptibility to predation. We investigated the degree of spatial and social sexual segregation in Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) in a subtropical estuary in Australia. Based on surveys completed over three years, dolphin groups were mostly mixed-sex or female. Mixed-sex groups were found in larger groups in mostly deeper water, whereas, female groups were foraging across all water depths in smaller groups. Aggressive coercive behaviour by males towards females was high, occurring mainly in deeper water, at higher tides, and outside the breeding season. Habitat use by female dolphin groups suggests that shallow tributaries may provide a sanctuary from aggressive males, access to suitable prey items and density for mothers and their calves, or a combination of these factors.  相似文献

The woodchuck is a seasonally breeding sciurid rodent. Female woodchucks are monoestrous and, when isolated from males, remain in a prolonged period of estrus characterized by a clear predominance of cornified cells in the vaginal smear. This study was designed to characterize relationships between the degree of vaginal cornification and sexual receptivity, and to study ovulation and related phenomena of this species in captivity. Fourteen individually caged adult females, maintained under standard laboratory conditions for 9-23 mo, were used in this investigation. Females exhibiting predominantly (67-97%) cornified smears were always receptive, regardless of the time interval from the onset of estrus, and mated within 24 h of pairing. Mated females allowed to complete pregnancy gave birth to live pups 30-32 days later. Litter size ranged from 3-7 pups. Serum progesterone (P) levels increased to approximately 2 ng/ml during the first week of pregnancy and greater than 5 ng/ml during the second and third weeks of pregnancy. Serum estradiol (E2) levels were elevated during the first week of pregnancy and began to decline thereafter. Examination of ovarian serial sections revealed that ovulation took place between 20 and 32 h after copulation. Serum levels increased significantly (4-fold) after ovulation (1.2 +/- 0.3 vs. 0.3 +/- 0.01 ng/ml). However, the circulating levels of E2 remained unchanged between the periods before (53 +/- 1 pg/ml) and after ovulation (60 +/- 3 pg/ml). Serum progesterone and urinary total estrogen concentrations were determined weekly to bi-weekly in 2 female Asian elephants for 96 weeks. The mean estrous interval was approximately 16 weeks in the nonpregnant animal. A total of 5 cycles were observed in the 96 week study period. The serum progesterone concentration ranged from 150 pg/ml to greater than 350 pg/ml during the luteal phase of the estrous cycle. The serum progesterone was elevated for 8–12 week weeks of the 16 week estrous cycle. The urinary total estrogen concentration ranged from less than 10 to greater than 300 pg/μg creatinine. The second animal was pregnant at the beginning of the study period. The serum progesterone concentration was elevated (> 100 pg/ml) in the pregnant animal until parturition. The urinary total estrogens increased from approximately 50 pg/μg creatinine to greater than 400 pg/μg creatinine during the first year of pregnancy and remained elevated until parturition. Blood samples from 15 breeding male Murrah buffaloes were collected during the winter, summer and monsoon seasons. Seminal characteristics and sexual behaviour were also studied. Serum samples were analysed for testosterone, progesterone and estradiol-17beta levels by radioimmunoassay. The studies showed significantly lower values for testosterone during winter (0.53 +/- 0.06 ng/ml) than during summer (1.22 +/- 0.19 ng/ml) and monsoon (1.06 +/- 0.12 ng/ml). The progesterone level was lowest during monsoon (84 +/- 9 pg/ml), intermediate during winter (115 +/- 14 pg/ml) and highest during summer (224 +/- 24 pg/ml). The mean level of estradiol-17beta was almost double (9 +/- 0.7 pg/ml) during monsoon as compared to winter (5 +/- 0.1 pg/ml). The correlations between hormone levels, seminal characteristics and sexual behaviour were of low magnitude.  相似文献
