Robert Redfield (1898–1958)

Geomancy is common in Southeast Asia. The imaginative association of disparate spatial and temporal coordinates allows discourses to emerge in which problems that cannot be resolved in the real world may be ‘thought’ through geomantic images and symbols. The Hindu‐Buddhist cosmographies of Southeast Asia form a framework within which the ‘geomancies’ of minority peoples take place. By modifying the relations of the real world, or depicting them in a timeless way, geomancy like poetry may allow changes to be experienced at a conceptual level before they are introduced into pragmatic affairs, or act against suck changes being brought about.     

怀念我的老师胡经甫教授(1896—1972)

胡经甫教授逝世已经整整八年了。在文化大革命中,林彪、“四人帮”推行极“左”路线,残酷迫害知识分子,胡教授这位老一辈科学家更是身受其害。“四人帮”的追随者们对他非法立案审查,强加给他“反动学术权威”等莫须有的罪名,进行批判揪斗,使他深受打击和摧残,终于在1972年含冤饮恨过

Structure of Poly (dT)·Poly (dA)·Poly (dT)

Abstract

The molecular structure of poly (dT)·poly (dA)·poly (dT) has been determined and refined using the continuous x-ray intensity data on layer lines in the diffraction pattern obtained from an oriented fiber of the DNA. The final R-value for the preferred structure is 0.29 significantly lower than that for plausible alternatives. The molecule forms a 12-fold right- handed triple-helix of pitch 38.4 Å and each base triplet is stabilized by a set of four Crick-Watson-Hoogsteen hydrogen bonds. The deoxyribose rings in all the three strands have C2′-endo conformations. The grooveless cylindrical shape of the triple-helix is consistent with the lack of lateral organization in the fiber.     

怀念师丹斯基

著名的奥地利古生物学家师丹斯基教授,不幸于1988年12月26日在瑞典乌普萨拉病逝,享年94岁.师丹斯基教授一生致力于科学研究,在古哺乳动物学领域中取得了重大成就.他与中国古脊椎动物与古人类学研究有着长期的、密切的关系.从1921年夏至1923年底,他随中瑞古生物考察团在中国做了大量的化石采集工作,之后陆续在《中国古生物志》上发表了多篇专著,其中包括:中国第三纪后期之食肉类化石(1924);中国北部第四纪之食肉类化石(1925);中国的鹿类化石(1925);河南渑池县之古骆驼类化石(1926);中国食肉类化石新发现之特征(1927);周口店第四纪之哺乳类化石(1928);中国早第三纪哺乳类化石(1930);马及其它奇蹄类(1935).在这些论文中,不仅记述了化石,而且有新见,为进一步研究中国这些门类的化石奠定了良好的基础.此外,他还在北京周口店发现过古人类化石.师丹斯基教授的逝世,无疑是古生物学界的一大损失,不仅中国同行,国外朋友也都缅怀他.
