Foraging honeybees are likely to learn visual and chemical cues associated with many different food sources. Here, we explore
how many such sources can be memorized and recalled. Marked bees were trained to visit two (or three) sugar feeders, each
placed at a different outdoor location and carrying a different scent. We then tested the ability of the bees to recall these
locations and fly to them, when the training scents were blown into the hive, and the scents and food at the feeders were
removed. When trained on two feeder locations, each associated with a different scent, the bees could correctly recall the
location associated with each scent. However, this ability broke down when the number of scents and feeder locations was increased
to three. Performance was partially restored when each of the three training feeders was endowed with an additional cue, namely,
a distinct colour. Our results suggest that bees can recall a maximum of two locations when each is associated with a different
scent. However, this number can be increased if the scent cues are augmented by visual cues. These findings have implications
for the ways in which associations are established and laid down in honeybee memory. 相似文献

Since genotyping can represent an important cost in genomic selection, it is important to minimize it without compromising the accuracy of predictions. The objectives of the present study were to explore how a decrease in the unit cost of genotyping impacted: (1) the number of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers; (2) the accuracy of the resulting genotypic data; (3) the extent of coverage on both physical and genetic maps; and (4) the prediction accuracy (PA) for six important traits in barley. Variations on the genotyping by sequencing protocol were used to generate 16 SNP sets ranging from ~?500 to ~?35,000 SNPs. The accuracy of SNP genotypes fluctuated between 95 and 99%. Marker distribution on the physical map was highly skewed toward the terminal regions, whereas a fairly uniform coverage of the genetic map was achieved with all but the smallest set of SNPs. We estimated the PA using three statistical models capturing (or not) the epistatic effect; the one modeling both additivity and epistasis was selected as the best model. The PA obtained with the different SNP sets was measured and found to remain stable, except with the smallest set, where a significant decrease was observed. Finally, we examined if the localization of SNP loci (genic vs. intergenic) affected the PA. No gain in PA was observed using SNPs located in genic regions. In summary, we found that there is considerable scope for decreasing the cost of genotyping in barley (to capture ~?2000 SNPs) without loss of PA.3.

It is most likely that the loss of melanocytes in vitiligo arises through a combination of pathogenic mechanisms that act in concert. Here, we discuss the potential interconnection of several mechanisms that are likely to operate. Vitis vinifera (grapevines) can form mutualistic associations with endophytic fungi. However, to date, there is not much information on the influence of endophytic Fusarium isolates on grapevine growth, oenological characteristics or their capabilities to suppress disease. In the present study, it was demonstrated on two grapevine varieties, in a field experiment, under natural conditions, that three isolates of Fusarium do indeed enter into mutualistic interactions with grapevines. Results indicate a complementary relationship between grape yield and Fusarium colonization. Plants treated with Fusarium isolates not only showed increased yield, but also had fewer losses due to shriveling and also had more robust development under unfavorable weather conditions. Furthermore, treatment with isolates of Fusarium solani and Fusarium subglutinans resulted in significantly lower gray mold incidence at rates of 80%. 相似文献

For decades vaccine program managers and governments have devoted many resources to addressing public vaccine concerns, vaccine risk perception, risk management and safety assessment. Despite ever growing evidence that vaccines are safe and effective, public concerns continue. Education and evidence based scientific messages have not ended concerns. How can governments and programs more effectively address the public’s vaccine concerns and increase confidence in the vaccine safety system? Vaccination hesitation has been attributed to concerns about vaccine safety, perceptions of high vaccine risks and low disease risk and consequences. Even when the public believes vaccines are important for protection many still have concerns about vaccine safety. This overview explores how heuristics affect public perception of vaccines and vaccine safety, how the public finds and uses vaccine information, and then proposes strategies for changes in the approach to vaccine safety communications. Facts and evidence confirming the safety of vaccines are not enough. Vaccine beliefs and behaviours must be shaped. This will require a shift in the what, when, how and why of vaccine risk and benefit communication content and practice. A change to a behavioural change strategy such as the WHO COMBI program that has been applied to disease eradication efforts is suggested. 相似文献

Quantifying how human disturbance affects biotic communities in the context of other natural and spatial factors is a vital precursor to develop environmental management strategies to effectively conserve and restore ecosystem. This is particularly so for freshwater ecosystems in heavily populated and increasingly disturbed regions such as the Wei River basin in north-west China. In this paper, we employed both species’ abundance and functional metrics (displaying species diversity, habitat, trophic level, tolerance and abundance) to quantify the effect of human disturbance using canonical correspondence analysis. The results showed that spatial, natural and human disturbance variables can explain 40.1% and 33.7% of the total variation in fish abundance without rare species and with all species, respectively. 37.1% and 37.9% variation can be explained in fish metrics without rare species and with all species. Human disturbance variables explained most of the total variations in the four fish matrices. Inclusion or exclusion of rare species will influence the total explained variation from three factors in fish metrics, but little in fish abundance. Rare species will highlight this relationship with human disturbance gradient. For fish metrics, removing rare species will reflect some wrong information for human disturbance gradient. We recommend to include rare species for fish metrics to assess the impact of environment. 相似文献

In the last decades, plant resistance to drought conditions has been studied intensively both at whole-tree level and at tissue level. These studies have highlighted the role of xylem cavitation in the global resistance of plants to drought. In this paper, we investigate the coordination among several symplastic variables during intense drought conditions and its relationship to resistance to xylem cavitation. We selected 2-year-old seedlings of Pistacia lentiscus L. and Quercus coccifera L., two Mediterranean drought-resistant species with differences in both xylem vulnerability to cavitation and survival rates under field conditions. Drought provoked large decreases in photosynthetic rates and predawn Fv/Fm ratios, as well as less marked decreases in actual PSII efficiency (due to decreases in both intrinsic PSII efficiency and photochemical quenching). Photosynthetic pigment composition remained fairly unchanged down to water potentials of −8 MPa, despite inter-conversions within the xanthophyll cycle in both species. Cell membrane injury and proline accumulation followed similar patterns, and were much more intense in P. lentiscus than in Q. coccifera. Comparisons between variables revealed that both species: (i) followed a drought avoidance strategy, (ii) were very resistant to drought conditions at symplastic level, and (iii) showed an overall good relationship between apoplast (xylem cavitation) and symplast resistance (membrane stability, PSII functionality, proline accumulation and pigment composition). Differences between species in functional symplastic and apoplastic characteristics are discussed. 相似文献

Behavioural observations of reproduction and mate choice in wild fossorial rodents are extremely limited and consequently indirect methods are typically used to infer mating strategies. We use a combination of morphological, reproductive, spatial, and genetic data to investigate the reproductive strategy of a solitary endemic species, the Cape dune mole-rat Bathyergus suillus. These data provide the first account on the population dynamics of this species. Marked sexual dimorphism was apparent with males being both significantly larger and heavier than females. Of all females sampled 36% had previously reproduced and 12% were pregnant at the time of capture. Post-partum sex ratio was found to be significantly skewed in favour of females. The paternity of fifteen litters (n?=?37) was calculated, with sires assigned to progeny using both categorical and full probability methods, and including a distance function. The maximum distance between progeny and a putative sire was determined as 2149 m with males moving between sub-populations. We suggest that above-ground movement should not be ignored in the consideration of mate acquisition behaviour of subterranean mammals. Estimated levels of multiple paternity were shown to be potentially as high as 26%, as determined using sibship and sire assignment methods. Such high levels of multiple paternity have not been found in other solitary mole-rat species. The data therefore suggest polyandry with no evidence as yet for polygyny. 相似文献

Interest in the use of regulatory T cells (Tregs) as cellular therapeutics has been tempered by reports of naturally occurring Tregs losing Foxp3 expression and producing IL-17, raising concerns over a switch to pathogenic function under inflammatory conditions in vivo. TGF-β-induced Tregs (inducible Tregs [iTregs]), generated in large numbers in response to disease-relevant Ags, represent the most amenable source of therapeutic Tregs. Using Foxp3-reporter T cells recognizing myelin basic protein (MBP), we investigated the capacity of iTregs to produce effector-associated cytokines under proinflammatory cytokine conditions in vitro and whether this translated into proinflammatory function in vivo. In contrast with naturally occurring Tregs, iTregs resisted conversion to an IL-17-producing phenotype but were able to express T-bet and to produce IFN-γ. iTregs initiated their T-bet expression during their in vitro induction, and this was dependent on exposure to IFN-γ. IL-12 reignited iTreg expression of T-bet and further promoted iTreg production of IFN-γ upon secondary stimulation. Despite losing Foxp3 expression and expressing both T-bet and IFN-γ, MBP-responsive IL-12-conditioned iTregs induced only mild CNS inflammation and only when given in high numbers. Furthermore, iTregs retained an ability to suppress naive T cell clonal expansion in vivo and protected against the development of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis. Therefore, despite bearing predictive hallmarks of pathogenic effector function, previously Foxp3(+) iTregs have much lower proinflammatory potential than that of MBP-responsive Th1 cells. Our results demonstrate that autoprotective versus autoaggressive functions in iTregs are not simply a binary relationship to be determined by their relative expression of Foxp3 versus T-bet and IFN-γ. 相似文献

An experiment was made to measure root growth of nitrogen catch crops, to investigate whether differences in root growth among plant species are related to their ability to deplete the soil nitrate-N pool. Large differences were observed in root growth parameters. Monocot species had rooting depth penetration rates in the range of 1.0 to 1.2 mm d–1 °C–1, whereas the non-legume dicot species had rates between 1.5 and 2.3 mm d–1 °C–1. Substantial differences were also found in the lag time from sowing until significant root growth was observed. The estimated temperature sum needed for the crops to reach a rooting depth of 1.0 m varied from 750 d °C for fodder radish to 1375 d °C for Italian ryegrass. The depth distribution of the root system varied strongly, and at a depth of 1.0 m the non-legume dicot species generally had root intensities (number of root intersections m–1 line on the minirhizotrons) 12 times as high as the monocot species.The amount of nitrate left in the topsoil (0–0.5 m) was only weakly correlated to a few of the measured plant and root parameters, whereas nitrate left in the subsoil (0.5–1.0 m) was clearly correlated to several root parameters. Subsoil nitrate residues were well correlated to root intensity, but showed even stronger correlations to more simple estimates of rooting depth. In the deepest soil layer measured (1.0–1.5 m), the soil water nitrate concentration was reduced from 119 g L–1 without a catch crop to 61 g L–1 under Italian ryegrass and to only 1.5 g L–1 under fodder radish.The results show that to identify the important differences in root growth among catch crops, root growth must be measured in deep soil layers. In this study, none of the measurements made aboveground or in the upper soil layers were well related to subsoil nitrate depletion. 相似文献

Among stylommatophoran gastropods, many species have simplified or reduced their copulatory organs, for example, within the Arionidae, many species lack penes. In this study, I ask two questions 1) How are soft bodied slugs which do not possess a penis connected during copulation? and 2) Is there a mechanical isolating barrier between related sympatric slug species? Observations on the mating behavior and the functional morphology of the distal genital apparatus were made in a mixed population of Arion lusitanicus and Arion rufus. The investigated Arion species exhibit an elaborate copulation process with a quick genital coupling. Prior to full eversion of the distal genitalia, the genital coupling proceeds inside the atrium cavity of one of the partners. This is in contrast to the symmetrical mutual eversion in penis‐bearing species. The donor–recipient channels are tightly connected to one after another and fit precisely. During copulation, the jelly‐coated spermatophore of the donor is pressed out into the connected channel of the partner, where it is implanted only with its frontal part. In the field, successful interspecific matings in terms of spermatophore transfer were rarely observed. The observations presented indicate a mechanical barrier which may profoundly influence the intraspecific and interspecific mating success. J. The stress of water-borne hormone collection process was examined in sailfin mollies Poecilia latipinna. Baseline release rates of the stress hormone cortisol were measured and minimum confinement time for water sampling was evaluated for a standard 60 min v. a 30 min protocol. A 30 min hormone collection period reflects release rates over 60 min. Potential stress response to confinement in the beaker for the water-borne collection process was tested over 4 days. There was no evidence of stress due to the collection methods, as cortisol release rates did not differ significantly across four sequential days of handling for P. latipinna. Males and females did not differ significantly in baseline cortisol release rates. Baseline cortisol release rates from fish immediately after being collected in the field were also not significantly different than those in the 4 day confinement experiment. After exposure to a novel environment, however, P. latipinna mounted a stress response. Stress may also affect sex steroids and behaviour but cortisol release rates were not significantly correlated with sex steroids [11-ketotestosterone (KT), testosterone, or oestradiol], or mating attempts. The correlation between water-borne release rates and plasma steroid levels was validated for both cortisol and KT. Finally, normalizing cortisol release rates using standard length in lieu of mass is viable and accurate. Water-borne hormone assays are a valuable tool for investigating questions concerning the role of hormones in mediating stress responses and reproductive behaviours in P. latipinna and other livebearing fishes. 相似文献
