Lemur catta troops in a 1-km 2 study area at Berenty Reserve have maintained fidelity to core areas since Budnitz and Dainis' study of 1972–1973, and for two troops possibly since 1963. Population in 1 km 2 fluctuated from 155 to 105 to 282 individuals (excluding infants), and the number of troops increased from 12 to 21. Most troops retain the same core areas from year to year (170 observed troop-years). Ten troops derived from known fissions have settled in parts of their parent troop range or an adjacent neighbor's range. Five more troops may derive from similar matrilocal fissioning, inferred from behavior and ranging patterns. One has remained unchanged. Five have unknown parentage, in the ranges of four previously censused troops. Once a fissioned troop completely replaced another, one troop permanently extended its range, three times females joined a different troop, once a female remained nomadic for two years without stable home range. No fissioned troop has been seen to leapfrog others: to settle discontiuously from its parent. Intertroop antagonism may reflect benefits of long-term core area control.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Use of Global Positioning System (GPS) collars on free-ranging ungulates overcomes many limitations of conventional very high frequency (VHF) telemetry and offers a practical means of studying space use and home range estimation. To better understand winter home ranges of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), we evaluated GPS collar performance, and we compared GPS- and VHF-derived diurnal home ranges (for the same animals) and GPS-derived home range estimates for diurnal and nocturnal locations. Overall, the mean fix success rate of our GPS collars was 85% (range = 14–99%). Kernel density estimates of home range (using the 95% probability contour) derived from GPS and VHF locations were generally similar, as were GPS-derived diurnal and nocturnal home ranges. Overlap indices between GPS and VHF utilization distributions (UDs) ranged from 0.49 to 0.78 for the volume of intersection (VI) index and from 0.67 to 0.94 for Bhattacharyya's affinity (BA); overlap indices for GPS-diurnal and nocturnal UDs ranged from 0.29 to 0.81 for VI and from 0.56 to 0.94 for BA. Despite similarities of home ranges estimated from GPS versus VHF locations and GPS-diurnal versus nocturnal locations, our data also indicate that differences may have important implications for studies focused on deer use of space, habitat, and resources at a finer scale.  相似文献

Photo-identification surveys conducted between 2002 and 2005 were used to determine dolphin home ranges and site fidelity within the Indian River Lagoon (IRL), Florida. The IRL was divided into six segments based on hydrodynamics and geographic features for purposes of characterization. Among the 615 dolphins with identifiable dorsal fins, 339 had ≥6 sightings and were used in segment and linear range analyses. The majority (98%) of dolphins were seen in ≤3 consecutive segments (331/339); of these, 44% (144/331) occurred in two segments, and 33% (109/331) in one segment. No dolphins were observed in all six segments. The largest number of dolphins was sighted in segment 1C (North Indian River). However, the highest density of dolphins was found in segment 2 (North-Central Indian River). Re-sighting rates for dolphins with ≥6 sightings ranged from 2.8 to 8.7 times observed. The mean linear home range varied from 22 to 54 km. Distributional analyses indicated that at least three different dolphin communities exist within the IRL: Mosquito Lagoon, and the North and South Indian River. No statistically significant correlations were found between the total number or density per km2 of dolphins and surface water area, salinity, or contaminant loads within segments of the lagoon. These results suggest that dolphins do not selectively avoid areas with relatively unfavorable water quality. IRL dolphins should be studied on smaller spatial scales than currently practiced, and potential anthropogenic impacts should be evaluated based on geographic partitioning.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to estimate the size of the home range used by individual Cape pangolins ( Manis temminckii ). The study was conducted in 1991–95 at Sengwa Wildlife Research Institute, Gokwe, Zimbabwe. Radio‐telemetry was used to repeatedly locate study pangolins. Home range area was estimated from the location of the burrows used by each pangolin. It was established that pangolins must be tracked for 85+ days to generate a reliable estimate of home range. The size of home ranges, determined from 1141 tracking days of data for 10 pangolins (3·0–15·8 kg body mass) that were each tracked for at least 85 days, was from 0·17 to 11·07 km2. Larger (older) pangolins used more burrows and had larger home ranges than smaller (younger) pangolins. The data indicate that large adult males had larger home ranges than large adult females. Within each sex, the home ranges were adjacent to each other with only slight overlap at the boundaries. There was clear overlap of home ranges between males and females.  相似文献

The western woolly lemur is distributed through central western, northwestern and possibly northern Madagascar and is traditionally viewed as a monotypic species (Avahi occidentalis) or as a subspecies of A. laniger. We present new data on body weights of Avahi which, together with previously available body weights, provide additional evidence for recognizing eastern and western woolly lemurs as two distinct species. We then reexamine the distributions of, and chromatic variation within and between, populations of western woolly lemurs. A comparative study of wild subjects and museum skins reveals that several geographically discrete morphs exist in western Avahi, which is clearly polytypic. Marked differences between populations in fur coloration suggest that 3 distinct taxa should be recognized. The populations differ considerably in their habitat structure. In addition, field observations suggest clear differences in population density between 2 of the populations. We describe and name one new species.  相似文献

Abstract

The home ranges of 5 ship rats (Rattus r. rattus L.) in a small forest area near Palmerston North were determined for 7 months by concurrent cage-trapping and smoked paper tracking. Baited tracking platforms were over 20 times as effective as cage-trapping in obtaining location data, and home ranges revealed by tracking were on average 5 times the area of trap-revealed home ranges. All the rats were to some extent cage-trap shy. However, although cage-traps could not supply useful information on range boundaries or swift acknowledgment of boundary changes, centres of activity calculated from trap data were comparable with those from tracking data. Tracking rates of individuals were variable; it would be risky to assume that they accurately reflected intensity of use of any area over short periods or when rats may have been competing for baits. The rats had stable home ranges; 3 females had ranges predominantly exclusive to each other. The progressive removal of individuals from the study area effected the prompt expansion of adjacent ranges to include vacated areas; that is, range size was inversely related to rat density.  相似文献

Relationships between the movement patterns of free-ranging mountain gorillas (Gorilla gorilla beringei) and the abundance and distribution of foods in their home range were examined. During an 18-month field study, the ranging of one group of G. gorilla beringei was recorded on a 250 × 250 m grid system, from which measurements of frequency and duration of use, travel rate, and rate of revisitation of each quadrangle by the group were derived. Food items were sampled in selected quadrangles throughout the home range and various measures of food abundance, frequency and diversity were calculated. Analyses based on both spatial and temporal variation in food availability give supporting evidence for the prediction that mountain gorilla ranging patterns are influenced by the distribution and abundance of foods. Quality of food appears to be an important factor, as shown in analyses of yearly patterns and monthly changes in ranging. The gorillas studied spent more time in the higher quality areas of their home range, responded to a correlate of decreasing food abundance by increasing their rate of travel and area used, and revisited regions more frequently when the renewal rate of foods was clearly greater. Each of their foraging tactics can be explained as serving to increase the efficiency of harvesting foods.  相似文献

We report the results of a census of Indri indri conducted in Betampona Nature Reserve, a lowland rain forest in eastern Madagascar. In addition, we conducted a year-long study of the ranging behavior of 3 groups in the southwestern region of the reserve. We used 2 methods to calculate population density and home range size, and to provide minimum and maximum estimates. Population density of Indri indri ranged from 6.9–13.2 individuals/km2 in Betampona. Mean home range size is 27 ha. The values for population density and home range size are intermediate between values for Indri indri in selectively logged and undisturbed montane rain forest. Our results suggest a relationship between habitat disturbance, population density and home range size for the species. Recent increases in habitat disturbance appear to cause an increase in population density and a decrease in home range size. The results are consistent with ones for other folivorous primate populations. Further research on habitat requirements of Indri and availability in Betampona is necessary to investigate the possibility of translocating Indri from nearby forest fragments into Betampona.  相似文献

We present data on aspects of the behavioral ecology of a free- ranging group of Saguinus fuscicollis weddelliat a site in Brazilian Amazonia where a second callitrichid, Callithrix emiliae,is syntopic. Diet, activity patterns, and ranging behavior are broadly similar to those of S. fuscicollisfrom sites in Bolivia, Brazil, and Perú, though significant seasonal changes include an extreme and atypical form of ranging behavior in which they foraged in central-place fashion around a source of exudate—Parkia pendula. S. f. weddelliwas active at relatively low levels in the forest both in absolute terms and relative to C.emiliae, which appears to be an important factor in their niche partitioning. Association between the two species appeared to be less systematic overall than those observed between S. fuscicollisand congeners at other sites, though this may be partly a result of observation conditions. During the period of central-place foraging, the two species exhibited a high degree of association. Other characteristics of the behavior of S. f. weddelliat the study site include the frequent use of tree holes as sleeping sites.  相似文献

The most important factor concerning wild cat populations is the loss of habitat. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the size of the home ranges of wild and domestic cats along with the features of these areas (vegetation, elevation, proximity to human settlement, etc.). A total of 16 wildcats and 19 domestic cats were caught and fitted with radio collars within the period between 1989–1993. It was possible to analyze the radiotelemetry data of 4 wildcats and 3 domestic cats. It resulted that the wildcats occupied larger home ranges than the domestic cats, however, there were exceptions. Home range size variability was extensive in both species. The males occupied larger areas than the females. This was most likely due to the reproductional wandering of males into female home ranges. Also the overlap between the home ranges of males was larger than that of females. However, there were very small overlaps between the core areas. No cats used the same sites at the same time. This indicates that the home ranges of cats exist only in space and time as well. Although these animals are solitary, there was some indication that hierarchy exists between males.  相似文献

Abstract

Biotin is involved in many vital metabolic pathways and must be provided for an efficient fermentation in the rumen, as well as for the intermediary metabolism of the host animal. Factors influencing ruminal biotin metabolism and output are widely unknown at present. Therefore, dairy cows fitted with permanent cannulas in the dorsal rumen and in the proximal duodenum were fed differently composed diets, and the biotin flow at the proximal duodenum was measured. The diets (on DM basis) consisted of 8.9 kg grass hay (Diet 1), 8.9 kg corn silage plus 2.0 kg concentrate (Diet 2), or 7.3 and 7.4 kg grass silage plus 10.0 kg concentrate (Diets 3 and 4). The concentrate in Diets 3 and 4 contained 87% wheat and corn grain, respectively. The cows were pre-fed the rations for 21 days. Thereafter duodenal digesta was sampled every two h for 5 days. Cr2O3 served as a flow marker and the microbial proportion of total nitrogen at the duodenum was estimated by near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). The duodenal flow of biotin was not related to biotin intake, but to the amount of fermented organic matter (FOM) and the amount of microbial protein (Biotin [mg/d] = 0.518 · kg FOM?0.300; r = 0.85 and biotin [mg/d] = 0.012 · g microbial protein + 1.478; r = 0.84), irrespective of the composition of the diet fed. Mean daily biotin flow was 0.48 ± 0.11 mg/kg FOM without any systematic effect of diet composition. The ruminal biotin balance, calculated as the difference between biotin flow at the duodenum and biotin intake, was positive (1.4 – 2.0 mg/d) in cows fed the mixed roughage/concentrate diets and negative (?0.71 mg/d) when the pure hay diet was fed.  相似文献

Provisioning along pedestrian trails by tourists much increased the nutrient quality and patchiness of food (NqPF) for Tibetan macaques (Macaca thibetana) at Mt Emei in spring and summer. In the habitat at a temperate-subtropical transition zone, the macaque's NqPF could be ordered in a decreasing rank from spring-summer to autumn to winter. With the aid of a radio-tracking system, I collected ranging data on a multigroup community in three 70-day periods representing the different seasons in 1991–92. Rank-order correlation on the data show that with the decline of NqPF, the groups tended to increase days away from the trail, their effective range size (ERS), their exclusive area (EA) and the number of days spent in the EA, and reduced their group/community density and the ratio of the overlapped range to the seasonal range (ROR). In icy/snowy winter, the macaques searched for mature leaves slowly and carefully in the largest seasonal range with a considerable portion that was not used in other seasons. Of the responses, the ROR decreased with the reduction in group/community density; and the ERS was the function of both group size (+) and intergroup rank (–) when favorite food was highly clumped. All above responses were clearly bound to maximize foraging effectiveness and minimize energy expenditure, and their integration in term of changes in time and space leads to better understanding macaque ecological adaptability. Based on this study and previous work on behavioral and physiological factors, I suggest a unifying theory of intergroup interactions. In addition, as the rate of behavioral interactions was also related to the group density, Waser's (1976) gas model probably applies to behavioral, as well as spatial, data on intergroup interactions.  相似文献

The characteristic CXC chemokine disulfide core of interleukin-8 (IL-8) has been rearranged in a variant replacing the 9—50 disulfide with a 9—38 disulfide. The new variant has been characterized by its binding affinity to IL-8 receptors A and B and the erythrocyte receptor DARC. This variant binds the three receptors with affinities between 500- and 2,500-fold lower than wild-type IL-8. Binding affinity results are also reported for the variant with alanine substituted for both cysteines 9 and 50. The Glu38 → Cys/Cys50 → Ala IL-8 crystallizes in space group P212121 with cell parameters a = 46.4, b = 49.2, and c = 69.5 Å, and has been refined to an R-value of 19.4% for data from 10 to 2 Å resolution. Analysis of the structure confirms the new disulfide arrangement and suggests that changes at Ile10 may be the principal cause of the lowered affinities. © 1997 Wiley-Liss Inc.  相似文献

The spatial pattern of mitotic activity, cell elongation, rate of H+ fluxes, and 14-3-3 protein content were determined in Zea mays roots. We found that the regions along the apical part of the growing root conversely differ in their proton pumping activity. Higher rate of H+ efflux coincides with higher growth rate and correlates with increased 14-3-3 protein content in membrane preparations. The segment consisting of the root cap and the apical part of the meristem exerts net inward proton pumping, which can be inverted under fusicoccin treatment or osmotic stress. In the latter case, this inversion is accompanied by accumulation of 14-3-3 protein in plasma membranes. The results obtained highlight 14-3-3 protein as an obvious candidate for the fine regulation of plasma membrane H+-ATPase in root apex.  相似文献

Although the pharmacological inhibition of cholesterol ester transport protein (CETP) has been proposed as a method of preventing and treating cardiovascular disease (CVD), the adverse effects of current inhibitors have cast doubt on the interaction mechanisms of inhibitors and CETP. In response, a molecular dynamics simulation was used to investigate their interaction and shed light on the lipid exchange mechanism of CETP. Results showed that torcetrapib, anacetrapib, and evacetrapib can induce the incremental rigidity of CETP, yet decrease the stability of Helix X and the hydrophobic tunnel of CETP, with passable binding abilities (ΔGbind, ?61.08, ?64.23, and ?61.57 kcal mol?1). During their binding processes, Van der Waals components (ΔEvdw + ΔGSA) play a dominant role, and the inhibitory effects closely correlated with residues Cys13, Val198, Gln199, Ser230, His232, and Phe263, which could reduce the flexibility of N- and C- termini and Helix X, as well as the stability of hydrophobic tunnel, into which the three inhibitors could enter and promote the formation of intramolecular H-bonds such as Thr138–Asn192 and Arg37–Glu186. Additionally, the three inhibitors could restrain the formation of an opening at the CETP N-terminal, which given the other findings suggests the tunneling mechanism of CETP transfer. The paper closes with an explanation of conceivable causes of the insufficient efficacy of the inhibitors, and puts forward the rationality in targeting the CETP distal end for CVD therapies.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Familial fatal insomnia (FFI) is fatal disorder characterized by damage to select thalamic nuclei, together with progressive insomnia and dysautonomia. In subjects carrying the D178N prion protein (PRNP) mutation, distinct phenotypes can be observed, depending on the methionine (Met) /valine (Val) codon 129 polymorphism. We report here a Chinese case of FFI with a D178N/Met129 genotype of the PRNP gene, who exhibited rapidly progressive dementia combined with behavioral disturbances and paroxysmal limb myoclonus. Our patient did not show refractory insomnia early in the disease course, nor demonstrate typical MRI and EEG alterations. There was remarkable family history of similar symptoms.  相似文献

We investigated what roles coevolution plays in shaping yeast protein interaction network (PIN). We found that the extent of coevolution between two proteins decreases rapidly as their interacting distance on the PIN increases, suggesting coevolutionary constraint is a short-distance force at the molecular level. We also found that protein-protein interactions (PPIs) with strong coevolution tend to be enriched in interconnected clusters, whereas PPIs with weak coevolution are more frequently present at inter-cluster region. The findings indicate the close relationship between coevolution and modular organization of PINs, and may provide insights into evolution and modularity of cellular networks.  相似文献

The human erythroleukemic cell line, K562, can be induced to differentiate by the addition of activin A, a newly purified protein belonging to the TGF-beta 1 family. The present studies used flow cytometric cell cycle analysis, indirect immunofluorescence staining of the proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), and thymidine incorporation assay of cell proliferation to study the effects of activin A on the cell cycle during differentiation in K562 cells. Activin A-treated K562 cells were found to undergo a transient block in cell cycle, temporarily halting progression from G1 to S phase. The latter can be observed after approximately 24 hr of incubation with activin A and then disappears after this early stage of induction of differentiation. Cell cycle kinetics analysis using synchronized K562 cells also confirms that in the presence of activin A, K562 cells progress normally through various phases of cell cycle, except that there is prolongation of the G1 phase between 10 to 24 hr of culture. Furthermore, this transient arrest in G1 is correlated with dephosphorylation of a nucleoprotein, the RB gene product, which occurs within 9-24 hr of incubation with activin A; and phosphorylation of RB protein then develops afterward. In addition, these cell cycle-related events are observed to occur earlier than the accumulation of hemoglobins in K562 cells. It is concluded that transient dephosphorylation of RB protein and prolongation of G1 phase of cell cycle precede and accompany erythroid differentiation caused by activin A and chemical inducers, thus constituting part of the mechanism for induction of differentiation in the erythroleukemia cells.  相似文献
