Mammary gland growth patterns were studied in 110 guinea pigs during the growth phase, pregnancy and lactation. Body weight changes were studied and, in addition, mammary indices were wet weight, dry fat-free tissue (DFFT), deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA). Statistical analyses were mathematical regression models to best fit the actual data. These included linear, quadratic, cubic, and several forms of exponential regression models. Data were separated into growth phase (60 guinea pigs in 10 age groups), pregnancy (20 guinea pigs in 4 groups), and lactation (30 guinea pigs in 6 groups). Data during pregnancy and the first 5 days of lactation were pooled and analyzed also because mammary growth continued beyond pregnancy to Day 5 of lactation. Mammary wet weight increased according to a cubic expression in the growth phase, while mammary DFFT, DNA and RNA were rectilinear through 200 days of age. During pregnancy and the first 5 days of lactation, mammary growth parameters followed the pattern of an exponential equation. Daily rates of increase for mammary DFFT and DNA were twice the rate for mammary wet weight. During lactation, mammary gland indices increased to Day 5 and then decreased gradually from Day 10 to Day 20. The best mathematical models for these change were those which are used to describe lactation curves, but all mammary gland indices decreased later and more gradually than milk production. Comparisons in growth rates of guinea pig mammary glands were made with those published for dairy goats and dairy cows. Rates of mammary DNA changed inversely to lengths of gestation in these 3 species.  相似文献

Abstract

Ovaries were recovered from red deer hinds culled in South West and in 1973–1976 during late pregnancy/early lactation (13 November – 18 December), the non-breeding season (10 January – 23 February), the period just before the onset of the rut (16 March – 11 April), and early pregnancy (13 May – 1 June). The percentage of hinds with a corpus luteum just before the onset of the rut was low (16.3% of adult hinds). An accessory corpus luteum of pregnancy was found in 46.8% of hinds in early pregnancy and in 58.9% in late pregnancy/early lactation (the difference is not significant). The accessory corpus luteum was about half the size of the primary corpus luteum of pregnancy. It appeared that the accessory corpus luteum was formed early in the breeding season, and persisted until parturition.  相似文献

This study outlines the reproduction periods of the African fruit bats Epomops buettikoferi, Epomophorus garnbianus , and Micropteropus pusillus at two West African savanna sites: a wet southern Guinea savanna and a drier southern Sudanese savanna. At both sites the two annual birth periods were timed such that both lactation by only one weaning period coincided with the rainy season peaks in fruit availability. On this basis we propose that lactation rather than weaning was the important determinant of the timing of reproduction. There was no evidence of cycling of testes size in males corresponding with the seasonal mating periods. E. buettikoferi and M. pusillus females mated at six months and gave birth at the age of 12 months. Males of the two species reached puberty by 11 months and seven months, respectively. Growth rates did not differ between cohorts growing through the wet and dry season and E. buettikoferi and M. pusillus grew at rates of 276 mg/day and 116 mg/day, respectively.  相似文献

The objectives of health management of ewes during pregnancy are as follows: (i) successful completion of pregnancy at term, (ii) birth of healthy and viable lambs, with optimal birth and potential weaning bodyweight, (iii) optimum milk production during the subsequent lactation and (iv) improved management in relation to drug residues in animal products. Knowledge of the physiological background of pregnancy in ewes: changes, mechanisms and interactions, during pregnancy is important for the overall health management of ewes during pregnancy. Health management of pregnant ewes includes diagnosis of pregnancy and evaluation of the number of foetuses borne, which will support strategies for subsequent management of the flock. Nutritional management of ewes depends upon the stage of lactation and specifically aims to (i) prevention of pregnancy toxaemia and other metabolic diseases during the peri-partum period, (ii) formation of colostrum in appropriate quantity and quality, (iii) production of lambs with normal future birth bodyweight and (iv) support of increased milk yield during the subsequent lactation. At the end of lactation, udder management of pregnant ewes includes its clinical examination, culling of ewes considered unsuitable for lactation and, possibly, the intramammary administration of antibiotics; objectives of that procedure are (i) to cure infections which have occurred during the previous lactation and (ii) to prevent development of new mammary infection during the dry period. Management of abortions includes the correct and timely diagnosis of the causative agent of the disorder, as well as the strategic administrations of chemotherapeutic agents, aiming to prevent abortions in flocks with confirmed infection with an abortifacient agent, especially if no appropriate vaccinations had been carried out before the mating season. During the final stage of pregnancy, health management of ewes includes administration of appropriate anthelmintic drugs, aiming to eliminate gastrointestinal helminthes (thus, increasing production output of ewes) and preventing the built-up of parasitic burdens in the environment (thus, reducing infection of lambs during their neonatal period). Vaccinations of pregnant ewes aim to protect these animals, as well as their offspring, especially against diseases which are a frequent cause of neonatal mortality (e.g., clostridial infections). Health management also aims to prevent the main metabolic disorders of pregnant ewes (i.e., pregnancy toxaemia and hypocalcaemia), as well as to monitor flocks for development of these disorders. Health management of pregnant ewes is completed with application of husbandry practices before the start of the lambing season. Finally, in some cases, health management may include induction and synchronisation of lambings, which is a management or therapeutic procedure.  相似文献

Information on mating season is of paramount importance for our understanding of reproductive behavior, yet little is currently known about the breeding season of Xenarhtra as a whole and sloths in particular. A pair of maned sloths was observed copulating in September 2005 in the Atlantic Forest region of south-eastern Brazil. Our studies on mating of the manned sloth as well of other hitherto unpublished records of newborn sloths seen in the wild, together with a review of previous information, indicate that B. torquatus is a seasonal breeder. Infants are born predominantly at the end of the wet season and beginning of the dry season (February–April), and copulation concentrates in the late dry and early wet seasons (August–October). This strategy allows for the energy-demanding gestation and lactation to take place during the less stressful period of the year.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of two different rumen-protected fat supplements, on reproductive performance and milk production, in grass-based spring calving cows. Two hundred and one Holstein-Friesian cows with an average lactation number of 3.6 (20% first lactation, 16% second lactation and 64% third lactation or greater) were grouped into blocks of three on the basis of calving date, lactation number and previous lactation milk yield for cows of second lactation or greater and on the basis of calving date for first lactation animals. From within-blocks individual animals were assigned at random, within 10 days post-calving, to one of the following three treatments: (1) Megalac Plus 3% (MP; 0.4kg/day, containing Ca salt of palm fatty acids and Ca salt of methionine hydroxy analogue), (2) Megapro Gold (MPG; 1.5kg/day, containing Ca salt of palm fatty acids, extracted rapeseed meal and whey permeate), and (3) Control (C; unsupplemented). Cows were supplemented for on average 103 days (range 54-134 days). The average milk yield over the first 12 weeks of lactation was higher (P<0.05) for both fat supplements compared to C and was higher for MP compared to C over the full lactation. Both supplements reduced (P<0.05) milk protein concentration over the first 6 weeks of lactation. MPG increased (P<0.05) conception rate to first service compared to C. Conception rate to first service was similar (P=0.14) on MP compared to C. For pregnancy to second service, C had a higher (P<0.05) conception rate than MP. There were no significant differences between treatments in overall pregnancy rate, services per conception, number of cows served in the first 3 weeks of the breeding season or the 6-weeks in-calf rate. Comparing the combined fat treatments to C resulted in a higher (P<0.05) conception rate to first service for the fat treatments but no significant difference in overall pregnancy rate. In conclusion, fat supplements increased conception rate to first service but did not significantly affect the proportion of cows pregnant at the end of the breeding season.  相似文献

1. The activities of fatty acid synthetase, acyl-CoA synthetase, glycerol phosphate acyltransferase and phosphatidate phosphatase were measured in the mammary glands of rabbits from day 16 of pregnancy to day 15 of post partum. 2. There were significant correlations between the increases in activities of these enzymes during this period. This was the case whether the activities were expressed per mg of homogenate protein, per g wet wt. of tissue or per total wet weight of the whole glands. The only exception was the lack of correlation between the activities of fatty acid synthetase and of phosphatidate phosphatase per g wet wt. of tissue. 3. These co-ordinate increases are discussed in relation to the changes which occur in fatty acid metabolism in the mammary gland during pregnancy and lactation.  相似文献

The movement and metabolism of vitamin A is dependent on a number of specific carrier proteins. The small intestine contains both cellular retinol-binding protein (type two) (CRBP(II], restricted to the villus-associated enterocytes, and cellular retinol-binding protein (CRBP), present primarily in supporting mesenchymal cells. The content of these proteins in the small intestine of prepartum and postpartum Sprague-Dawley rats was determined by radioimmunoassay. Levels of CRBP(II), but not CRBP, changed dramatically during this period. Total content of CRBP(II) in the small intestine rose precipitously in late pregnancy and continued to rise throughout lactation to a peak at day 21 postpartum more than 300% greater than in nulliparous, nonpregnant controls. In contrast, total small intestinal weight and CRBP content increased only approximately 100% from late pregnancy to day 21 of lactation. CRBP(II) concentration in the proximal and middle segments of small intestine (expressed on a g wet tissue, mg protein, or mg DNA basis) remained at control levels through day 17 of pregnancy, increased 50-100% in late pregnancy, then rose markedly at parturition to levels two- to threefold greater than controls. CRBP(II) concentration was then maintained at a relatively constant elevated level during the remainder of lactation, but decreased markedly after weaning, approaching control levels within 1 week. The concentrations of CRBP(II) in enterocytes isolated from the proximal two-thirds of the small intestine from rats on day 20 of pregnancy and days 1 and 16 of lactation, expressed on a mg DNA basis, were similar and approximately 60% greater than controls.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

This study addresses potential management risk factors affecting the incidence of twin pregnancies in high-producing dairy cows. Special attention was paid to the estrus synchronization protocol used before the AI resulting in pregnancy. Possible factors affecting the twin pregnancy rate were analyzed through binary logistic regression procedures on 2015 pregnant cows from July 2010 to July 2011. Twin pregnancy was recorded in 361 of the 2015 pregnancy diagnoses made (17.9%). Twin pregnancy rates differed among herds (P < 0.001) and ranged from 12.4% to 23.9%. Based on the odds ratios, the risk of twin pregnancy was reduced by factors of 0.65 or 0.71 when AI was performed during the warm season or an increasing photoperiod, respectively and increased by a factor of 1.11 for each unit increase in lactation number; by factors of 4.57 or 6.33 in cows that received a progesterone-releasing intravaginal device (PRID) plus 500 or 750 IU of equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) 28 days before the pregnancy AI, respectively; by a factor of 2.39 in cows with an ovarian cyst diagnosed in the 14 days prior to AI and treated with prostaglandins (PG); by factors of 1.94 or 3.91 in cows that received two PG doses during the 14 days prior to AI or cows that following failed PRID treatment had received PG started over the 28 days prior to AI, respectively; and by a factor of 2.58 in cows that had previously delivered twins compared to cows delivering singletons. Our results indicate that cow factors, such as lactation number and previous twining, as well as environmental factors, such as photoperiod and season and management related to synchronization protocols affect significantly the incidence of twin pregnancies.  相似文献

The geographic distribution of Japanese macaques includes populations with the most northern range of any primate species. Not surprisingly, females of this species are characterized by physiological adaptations and unique fat deposition mechanisms that facilitate their survival through the sometimes‐harsh seasonal conditions of temperate climates, as well as sustaining the metabolic costs of mating, pregnancy, and lactation. Here, we explore the relationship between nutritional status, seasonality, and reproductive status using anthropometric and leptin measures from 14 captive female Japanese macaques. No seasonal patterns were found in the levels of leptin, but there were differences between seasons in anthropometric measures, specifically between the beginning and the end of the mating season. Females gained weight and accumulated energy reserves in fall to prepare for mating activity, and to survive the severe conditions of winter, which is also the period of gestation if pregnancy occurs. Lactating females had larger total skinfolds relative to nonlactating individuals, and females with older babies at the beginning of the mating season had larger abdominal skinfolds than did those with younger babies. There was a relationship between the likelihood of conception and nutritional status, with females that conceived during one mating season being in better condition at the end of their previous mating season. Together, these results suggest that, even in captive settings, seasonal breeding has a cost on the energetic demands of mating, and that higher condition (i.e. fatter) females could afford the demands of lactation and reproduced more rapidly. Poor detection of estrus, still a major problem in the dairy industry, has prompted the development of electronic estrous detection technologies. One of the features of estrous behavior is a marked increase in walking activity. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the effects of various management factors on walking activity increase at estrus, and the relationship between this trait and fertility. Data from 5883 artificial inseminations (AI) conducted in two high-producing dairy herds were analyzed. Detection of estrus was performed using a pedometer system. Of the total AI investigated, 2072 (35.2%) resulted in pregnancy. The following data were recorded for each animal at AI: herd, lactation number, milk production (average for the 3 days prior to AI), lactation stage (early, mid, and late lactation), previous estrous synchronization (cloprostenol or progesterone releasing intravaginal device [PRID] for animals showing estrus within 7 days of treatment), season (warm versus cool period), insemination number following parturition, inseminating bull, inseminator, and pedometer measurements. Variables were screened for associations with walking activity by analysis of variance (ANOVA) through generalized linear model procedures (PROC GLM). Increased parity and milk production, and insemination during the warm period were associated with lower pedometer measurements. No significant effects of the herd, estrous synchronization, and lactation stage were observed. The link between walking activity and fertility was determined by applying logistic regression models. We detected no significant effects of herd, milk production, estrous synchronization, lactation stage, and inseminator on pregnancy rate. A higher lactation and insemination number, and insemination during the warm period were negatively correlated with the pregnancy rate. The likelihood of pregnancy was greater when semen from one of the bulls was used and when physical activity at estrus was increased. Our findings indicate that cow and management factors contribute intensely to walking activity at estrus, and also reveal a close link between increased walking activity and fertility.  相似文献

During a long-term field study of a free-living population of California ground squirrels (Spermophilus beecheyi), blood samples were drawn at regular intervals from marked females via femoral venipuncture, and plasma progesterone (P) and prolactin (PRL) were measured by radioimmunoassay. Marked fluctuations with season and reproductive condition occurred in circulating levels of both hormones, with peak levels occurring during the spring breeding season. Two peaks in P concentrations were observed each spring, the first occurring during pregnancy, and the second during lactation. Peak PRL levels in females were also reached during the lactation interval, midway between the two P peaks. Analysis of repeated measures from individual females showed a marked decline in circulating P around the time of parturition. Juveniles had lower mean P levels than adults, and yearlings had lower peak levels during their initial reproductive episodes than older females did. The observed pattern of P secretion in S. beecheyi differs from that known for most mammals, but resembles those reported for other ground-dwelling sciurid rodents.  相似文献

Various physiological and environmental factors were examined for possible association with retention of the fetal membranes in a herd experiencing a high incidence of this problem. Data were collected on 116 multiparous and primiparous cows during the first lactation of the trial and 57 multiparous cows during the second lactation of the trial. No mineral or heavy metal deficiencies or toxicities were detected in the herd and injections of selenium and/or vitamins A, D and E during the prepartum period were not beneficial. Also, no common disease entity could be found in this herd. Placental retention rates observed were 28% and 42% in the first and second lactations, respectively, of this study. The incidence of retained placenta was higher in cows giving birth to twins or male calves, and following abortions, stillbirths or placental retention at the previous parturition. Seasonal effects varied, with a higher retention rate in the warm season in the first lactation and in the cold season in the second lactation. Factors examined that did not show a statistically significant relationship to the placental retention rate included: blood serum vitamin A and β-carotene concentrations; age or lactation number; calf birth weight; presence of serum antibodies to leucosis or chlamydia; incidence of milk fever or ketosis; and services per conception, days open and gestation length of the pregnancy prior to retention. Cows with retained placenta subsequently had longer postpartum intervals to first ovulation and more uterine infections, foot problems and mastitis than cows without retained placenta.  相似文献

Studies on the relationship between female testosterone (T) measures and behavior, particularly in free-ranging primate populations, remain scant. In this study we used fecal steroid analysis to examine the effects of seasonal, reproductive, and social factors on female T in a group of free-ranging hybrid baboons (Papio sp.) in the Awash National Park of Ethiopia. We collected behavioral and hormonal data from 25 adult females across an 11-month period. Solid phase extraction and radioimmunoassay (RIA) techniques were used to quantify T in 776 fecal samples collected weekly from each female. The results indicate that 1) the females had elevated T during pregnancy and during the wet season relative to other periods, 2) female dominance rank was positively related to T measures, and 3) female T and aggression were positively related within subjects but not across subjects. Higher T concentrations during pregnancy are consistent with other published profiles of pregnancy in primates. In combination with data on foraging, wet season increases in T may indicate contest competition for females. The rank-T relationship may be mediated by supplants or aggression. Finally, we discuss the different interpretations of the hormone-behavior relationship based on within- and across-subject analyses.  相似文献

Lactose biosynthesis and relevant enzymatic activity in rabbit mamma ry tissue during various stages of pregnancy and lactation are investigated by using a tissue-slice incubation method in order to understand the temporal relationships. Ovulation was induced in 27 New Zealand white rabbits and they were bred by artificial insemination. Sacrifice occurred on days 15, 24, and 29 of pregnancy, and day 2, 5, 8, 15, and 22 post partum. Nucleic acids were extracted and concentratons of DNA determined spectrophotometrically at 600 nm with diphenylamine reagent and RNA determined with orcinal reagent. The tissue incubations were made with (U-14C) glucose. (14C) lactose was then separated by paper chromatography from unchanged radioactive glucose. Enzyme analysis including determining the activities of phosphoglucomutase, UDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase, and UDP-glucose 4-epimerase. Lactose synthase was determined, as well as, hexokinase. A biphasic adaptation in the rate of lactose synthesis and in the RNA concentration was noted during lactogenesis. The 1st increase in the rate of lactose biosynthes is occurred between days 15 and 24 of pregnancy. A 2nd substantial increase was noted immediately post partum. The overall rate of lactose biosynthesis increased 12-fold from day 24 of pregnancy to day 15 of lactation post partum, and then decreased from 15 to 22 days post partum. The RNA concentration/g wet weight of tissue and the ratio of RNA/DNA closely represented the biphasic ability of the mammary-tissue slice to synthesize lactose. Increases in the activities of UDP-glucose 4-epimerase and lactose synthase were most closely correlated with increases in the rate of lactose biosynthesis. UDP-glucose pyrophosphor ylase activity was unrelated with the ability to synthesize lactose, and hexokinase and phosphoglucomutase activities were variable during pregnancy and lactation. Lactose synthase activity was present by day 15 of pregnancy, but the ability to synthesize lactose was undetected until day 24 of pregnancy.  相似文献

We compared levels of prolactin-releasing peptide (PrRP) mRNA expression in mouse medulla at different stages of pregnancy and lactation. Mouse medulla samples were collected on days 6, 12 and 18 of pregnancy and lactation, respectively (six per group), for mRNA. Expression levels of PrRP mRNA in the medulla were measured by semi-quantitative RT-PCR, with glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase as a control. PrRP mRNA was highly expressed in mouse medulla oblongata on day 6 of pregnancy (0.53), followed by 0.43 at lactation day 6, and 0.42 at lactation day 12. The expression level of PrRP mRNA on days 12 and 18 of pregnancy and day 18 of lactation shared the same value of 0.36. PrRP mRNA levels during lactation decreased slightly compared with that during pregnancy, but the differences between them were not significant. In summary, PrRP mRNA levels in the medulla oblongata remain relatively stable during pregnancy and lactation. This is evidence that medulla PrRP is not involved in the regulation of prolactin secretion.  相似文献

The relationship was investigated of the hormones associated with pregnancy and lactation and the termination of pregnancy that occurs when rats mated at the post-partum oestrus are allowed to suckle a large litter after implantation. The primary cause for pregnancy termination was found to be an insufficient level of progesterone with the possible need for a primary or synergistic dose of oestrogen. The progesterone deficiency was not due to the high levels of prolactin present in nursing rats, since pregnancy termination could not be produced by prolactin administration in the absence of accelerated lactation, and could not be prevented by blocking prolactin secretion after accelerated lactation. Administration of LH to rats after accelerated lactation did prevent termination of pregnancy.  相似文献

The mammary gland tissue hexose monophosphate dehydrogenase activities were low in virgin, pregnant and weaned rats, but increased at the onset of lactation. The muscle and liver glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity peaked at early and late lactation respectively. The liver 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase peaked in late pregnancy and remained elevated through lactation. The muscle 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase peaked at the onset of lactation. The adipose tissue hexose monophosphate dehydrogenases exhibited small changes during pregnancy and lactation. The spleen hexose monophosphate dehydrogenases did not respond to lactation An overshoot in both the liver and the adipose tissue hexose monophosphate dehydrogenases was observed on weaning. Serum glucose levels remained unchanged throughout pregnancy, lactation and weaning. Only liver glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity correlated with plasma insulin, which also correlated positively with food consumption. The results demonstrate that tissue-specific control of the hexose monophosphate dehydrogenases occurs in the female rat during its complete lactation cycle.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine serum Cu, Zn, Mn, K, and Mg levels before and during pregnancy and during the lactation period of sheep and cattle and to determine the relationships between periods. For this purpose, blood samples of 14 healthy, pregnant Brown Swiss cows fed under normal condition and 36 Karakaş (İvesi × Akkaraman) sheep were used. Blood samples were analyzed using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. There were significant differences between before pregnancy and during pregnancy, and during pregnancy and the lactation period for serum Zn concentration; also before pregnancy and during pregnancy, and before pregnancy and the lactation period for serum K concentration in cows (p<0.05). There were significant differences between before pregnancy and the lactation period for serum Cu concentration, and before pregnancy and during pregnancy for serum K concentration; also pregnancy and the lactation period for serum Mg concentration in sheep (p<0.05).  相似文献

The kinetics of endogenous urea were compared during the last month of pregnancy, lactation, and a nonpregnant, nonlactating control period in Sardi sheep kept on a constant feed level. Urea entry rate estimated by injections of [14C]urea rose by 36% during pregnancy. Renal urea excretion was reduced by 40% during pregnancy and by 28% during lactation. Consequently, fractional urea recycling was greater during pregnancy and, to some extent, during lactation than during the control period. In a second series of experiments, glomerular filtration rate increased by 48% and urea filtration rate rose by 17% during pregnancy. During lactation, both glomerular filtration rate and urea filtration rate were close to control levels. It appears that the decreased renal urea excretion during pregnancy and lactation was due mainly to increased tubular reabsorption of urea. Rumination time increased by 15% during pregnancy. Rumen ammonia concentration was elevated in both pregnant and lactating ewes above the control period level. The results suggest that Sardi sheep possess a high potential for the conservation of nitrogen during pregnancy and lactation periods.  相似文献
