The size of some Trichogramma spp. adults and especially the ovipositor length depends on the species, but is also related to the host species and to the number of parasitoids per host. The length is greater in T. evanescens than in T. pretiosum itself greater than in T. exiguum, but the width is similar in the three species. For T. evanescens, the size obtained in Mamestra brassicae host when three or four insects emerged is similar to that obtained in Ephestia kuehniella host when singly parasitized. The size of the ovipositor is important because it may influence the possibility of in vitro egg laying in artificial host eggs. A shorter or a narrower ovipositor could cause difficulties in egg-laying into artificial host eggs composed of a membrane of unsuitable thickness.  相似文献

In the female reproductive system of the relatively large hemipteran, the western conifer seed bug Leptoglossus occidentalis (Heidemann), a cuticle‐lined tube extends medially along the surface of the vagina from the proximal end of the spermathecal complex anteriorly to the base of the common oviduct. This medial tube houses the proximal end of the spermathecal duct, thereby enabling the transport of material from the spermatheca at the distal end of the spermathecal complex, past the vagina (or bursa copulatrix) and directly to the common oviduct. The proximal portion of the spermathecal complex also contains an insemination duct that is separate from the spermathecal duct. The insemination duct allows the male intromittent organ to extend from the vagina to the spermatheca without navigating through the spermathecal duct. The reproductive systems of two previously studied Hemiptera, the milkweed bug Oncopeltus fasciatus (Dallas) and the box elder bug Leptocoris trivittatus (Say), possess a similar cuticle‐lined medial tube housing the spermathecal duct. This new information provides a clearer understanding of sperm transport in the female reproductive system of Lygaeidae bugs, and helps to clarify the path of the male organ during copulation, as well as the movement of sperm during egg laying.  相似文献

Oviposition and host discrimination behaviour of unmated Anagyrus pseudococci (Girault), an endoparasitoid of the citrus mealybug Planococcus citri (Risso), were investigated in the laboratory. Female parasitoids were able to discriminate between parasitized hosts and healthy ones. The mean number of ovipositions was significantly higher in unparasitized than in parasitized hosts. Conspecific-superparasitism occurred more often than self-superparasitism. Changes in consecutive ovipositions over three hours by A. pseudococci suggested that egg load influenced the discrimination behaviour of the parasitoids, with females which had low egg loads mostly avoiding oviposition in already parasitized hosts at time intervals ranging from 0 h to 96 h, and distributing their eggs in the high quality (unparasitized) hosts. The parasitized hosts were rejected more commonly through antennal perception of external markers than during ovipositor probing which could have encountered internal markers but this relationship changed with increasing time after oviposition. The parasitoid's oviposition rate in unparasitized and conspecific-parasitized hosts varied at the different oviposition time intervals when the females had fewer eggs in the ovaries. Percentage emergence of parasitized offspring was not significantly influenced by whether they developed in single or superparasitized mealybugs. The significance of host discrimination by A. pseudococci is discussed.  相似文献

The general structure of the female genital system of Zorotypus caudelli is described. The ovarioles are of the panoistic type. Due to the reduction of the envelope (tunica externa) the ovarioles are in direct contact with the hemolymph like in some other insect groups, Plecoptera included. The calices are much larger in Z. caudelli then in Zorotypus hubbardi and their epithelial cells produce large amounts of secretions, probably protecting the surface of the eggs deposited on the substrate. Eggs taken from the calyx bear a series of long fringes, which are missing in the eggs found in the ovariole, and in other zorapteran species. The long sperm of Z. caudelli and the long spermathecal duct are likely related to a sexual isolating mechanism (cryptic female choice), impeding female re-mating. The apical receptacle and the spermathecal duct - both of ectodermal origin - consist of three cell types. In addition to the cells beneath the cuticle lining the lumen, two other cell types are visible: secretory and canal cells. The cytoplasm of the former is rich in rough endoplasmic reticulum cisterns and Golgi complexes, which produce numerous discrete dense secretory bodies. These products are released into the receiving canal crossing the extracellular cavity of secretory cells, extending over a series of long microvilli. The secretion is transported towards the lumen of the apical receptacle of the spermatheca or to that of the spermathecal duct by a connecting canal formed by the canal cells. It is enriched by material produced by the slender canal cells. Before mating, the sperm cells are enveloped by a thick glycocalyx produced at the level of the male accessory glands, but it is absent when they have reached the apical receptacle, and also in the spermathecal duct lumen. It is likely removed by secretions of the spermatheca. The eggs are fertilized at the level of the common oviduct where the spermathecal duct opens. Two micropyles at the dorsal side of the equator level possibly facilitate fertilization. The presence of these two micropyles is a presumably derived feature shared with Phasmatodea. The fine structure of the female reproductive system of Z. caudelli does not allow to assess the phylogenetic position at the present stage of knowledge. The enlarged calyx and the temporary presence of long fringes on the eggs are potential autapomorphies of Z. caudelli or may indicate relationships with other Zorotypus species.  相似文献

At study sites in Cambridgeshire, England, the percentage of reed warbler, Acrocephalus scirpaceus, nests parasitized by cuckoos, Cuculus canorus, in 2 years was 22·5% and 9·1%. The warblers rejected cuckoo eggs at 19% of parasitized nests. Parasitized clutches suffered less predation than unparasitized clutches, suggesting that the cuckoo itself was the major predator, plundering nests too advanced for parasitism so that the hosts would re-lay. The cuckoos laid a mimetic egg, parasitized nests in the afternoons during the host laying period, usually removed one host egg, laid a remarkably small egg and laid very quickly. Nests were experimentally parasitized with model eggs to study the significance of this procedure. Experiments showed that host discrimination selects for: (1) egg mimicry by cuckoos (poorer matching model eggs were more likely to be rejected); (2) parasitism during the laying period (mimetic eggs put in nests before host laying began were rejected); (3) afternoon laying (mimetic eggs were less likely to be accepted in the early morning than in the afternoon, when hosts were more often absent from the nest); (4) a small egg (large eggs, typical of non-parasitic cuckoos, were more likely to be rejected); (5) rapid laying (a stuffed cuckoo on the nest stimulated increased rejection of model eggs), and (6) sets a limit to host egg removal by cuckoos (if more than one or two are removed desertion may occur). Mimicry may also be selected for because it reduced the chance that second cuckoos can discriminate the first cuckoo's egg from the host's clutch. Predation did not select for mimicry; nests with a non-mimetic egg did not suffer greater predation than those with a mimetic egg. Host rejection of model eggs did not depend on: (1) stage of parasitism once host egg laying had begun (nevertheless cuckoos were more likely to lay early in the host laying period probably to increase the chance the cuckoo chick hatched); (2) removal of a host egg (however, this reduced the incidence of unhatched eggs so cuckoos may remove a host egg so as not to exceed the host incubation limit). There were two costs of rejection, an ‘ejection’ cost (own eggs ejected as well as the cuckoo egg) and, with mimetic eggs, a ‘recognition’ cost (own eggs ejected instead of the cuckoo egg). Reed warblers did not discriminate against unlike chicks (another species) and did not favour either a cuckoo chick or their own chicks when these were placed in two nests side by side. Possible reasons why the hosts discriminate against unlike eggs but not unlike chicks are discussed.  相似文献

The host-handling behavior of individual female waspsDiglyphys minoeus which attack the larvae of the honeysuckle leaf-miner,Phytomyza lonicerae, include 4 types of behavior: probing, ovipositor insertion, host-feeding, and resting. Ovipositor insertion may either be injection of venom, probing of the host by the sensilla on the ovipositor's tip or egg laying. Three types of attacks were distinguished: oviposition attack for unparasitized larvae, host-feeding attack for unparasitized host larvae and host rejection for previously parasitized host larvae. Oviposition attack was characterized by frequent alternation between probing and ovipositor insertion, long duration of ovipositor insertion and resting, and the long duration of host-handling. Resting behavior is thought to protect the progeny against superparasitism, host-feeding by other wasps or hosts' recovery from paralysis. Host-feeding attack was characterized by frequent alternation between host-feeding and ovipositor insertion and long duration of host-feeding. Host rejection was composed mainly of probing and ovipositor insertion and short handling time.   相似文献

Abstract.  Eupelmus vuilleti acts as a cleptoparasitoid when encountering a host parasitized by Dinarmus basalis . The encounter of a parasitized host stimulates an increasing number of ovipositor probes directly above the parasitized host, an increasing number of host stings and the destruction of approximately 40% of the D. basalis eggs. The stimulation of ovipositor probes appears to be due to the detection of a stimulus that is different from the stimulus allowing interspecific host discrimination. It appears that a proteinacious substance produced by the D. basalis venom gland and deposited on the edge of the drilled hole induces probing behaviour of E. vuilleti .  相似文献

Intraspecific nest parasitism in two colonies of Spotless Starling Sturnus unicolor breeding in nestboxes was studied in central Spain from 1991 to 1994. Nests were monitored regularly and three criteria were used to detect nest parasitism: the appearance of more than one egg per day during the laying period of the host; the appearance of an egg after the start of incubation; eggs with unusual shape or pigmentation. The proportion of parasitized nests in first clutches (37%) was twice that of intermediate (19%) or second (20%) clutches in colony B, whereas parasitism occurred in first (35%) and intermediate (12%) but not in second clutches in colony A. Most clutches (52–70%) were parasitized during the host's laying period and received one parasitic egg. In 10% of the parasitized clutches in colony B, one of the host's eggs disappeared on the day the parasitic egg was added, suggesting that the parasitic female removed this egg. Although parasitism increased clutch size significantly, it led to a decrease in host breeding success, mainly through the removal of eggs and the loss of host nestlings and the survival of parasitic chicks. Observations suggested that parasitic females were young individuals without their own nests and/or those whose breeding attempt had been disrupted while laying in their own nest.  相似文献

对斜纹夜蛾的内寄生蜂双斑侧沟茧蜂MicroplitisbicoloratusChen和南美斑潜蝇的外寄生蜂潜蝇姬小蜂Diglyhusisaea(Walker)的卵巢结构进行了研究。双斑侧沟茧蜂的2个卵巢管底部膨大有大量的卵,通过凹陷的颈部与萼区相连接,在萼区里大量成熟待产的卵浸泡在萼液中。产卵量随产卵时间延长而降低,在日产卵实验中,日产卵量202(±114SE),从1000至1800每2h的产卵量分别占日产卵量的38,32,17和13%;在一生产卵量实验中,9d产卵期,每头雌峰一生平均产卵量为502(±78SE)粒,第1d产卵量占一生总产卵量的42%。潜蝇姬小蜂的每个卵巢由3条卵巢管组成,每条输卵管中仅有1粒成熟卵,整个卵巢中只有6粒成熟卵,每次产卵数不超过6粒。结果表明,M.bicoloratus是早熟卵(proovigenic)类昆虫;D.isaea是同步卵(synovigenic)类昆虫。  相似文献

In the present experiments the effect of GSM radiation on ovarian development of virgin Drosophila melanogaster female insects was studied. Newly emerged adult female flies were collected and divided into separate identical groups. After the a lapse of certain number of hours-different for each group-the insects (exposed and sham-exposed) were dissected and their intact ovaries were collected and photographed under an optical microscope with the same magnification. The size of the ovaries was compared between exposed and sham-exposed virgin female insects, during the time needed for the completion of oogenesis and maturation of the first eggs in the ovarioles. Immediately after the intact ovaries were photographed, they were further dissected into individual ovarioles and treated for TUNEL and acridine-orange assays to determine the degree of DNA damage in the egg chamber cells. The study showed that the ovarian size of the exposed insects is significantly smaller than that of the corresponding sham-exposed insects, due to destruction of egg chambers by the GSM radiation, after DNA damage and consequent cell death induction in the egg chamber cells of the virgin females as shown in previous experiments on inseminated females. The difference in ovarian size between sham-exposed and exposed virgin female flies becomes most evident 39-45 h after eclosion when the first eggs within the ovaries are at the late vitellogenic and post-vitellogenic stages (mid-late oogenesis). More than 45 h after eclosion, the difference in ovarian size decreases, as the first mature eggs of the sham-exposed insects are leaving the ovaries and are laid.  相似文献

Through the process of ecological speciation, insect populations that adapt to new host plant species or to different plant tissues could speciate if such adaptations cause reproductive isolation. One of the key issues in this process is identifying the mechanisms by which adaptation in ecological traits leads directly to reproductive isolation. Here I show that within a radiation of specialist moths that pollinate and feed on yuccas, shifts in egg placement resulted in changes in female moth egg‐laying structures that led to concomitant changes in male reproductive morphology. As pollinator moths evolved to circumvent the ability of yuccas to selectively abscise flowers that contain pollinator eggs, ovipositor length became shorter. Because mating occurs through the ovipositor, shortening of the ovipositor also led to significantly shorter and wider male intromittent organs. In instances where two pollinator moth species occur in sympatry and on the same host plant species, there is one short and one long ovipositor species that are reproductively isolated. Given that many plant‐feeding insects lay eggs into plant tissues, changes in ovipositor morphology that lead to correlated changes in reproductive morphology may be a mechanism that maintains reproductive isolation among closely related species using the same host plant species.  相似文献

The oviposition decisions made by insect parasitoids when encountering hosts of variable quality have been the subject of extensive theoretical and experimental investigation. For parasitoids that lay their eggs inside the host, the possible outcomes of encounters with parasitized hosts have been assumed to include only oviposition (superparasitism), rejection, or in some cases feeding on host haemolymph. We document another outcome in Encarsia formosa Gahan (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), a species that has been a model system for the study of oviposition behaviour. In E. formosa, females may kill eggs previously laid within the host by jabbing them with their ovipositor before ovipositing themselves. (1) Our observations indicated that jabbed eggs were indeed killed. (2) In experimental arenas in the laboratory, ovicide occurred in the majority of encounters with parasitized hosts and at highest frequency in encounters resulting in oviposition. (3) There was no significant difference in the handling time associated with oviposition+ovicide in parasitized hosts in comparison with oviposition alone, suggesting that there is no time cost to ovicide. (4) Ovicide did not appear to be incidental to normal probing within a host. Radial analysis of the direction of ovipositor movement with respect to the centre of the previously laid egg within the host showed that females engaged in ovicidal bouts probed most often in the direction of the egg. This is the first well-documented study of ovicide in an endoparasitoid. We suggest ovicide may be under-reported in other endoparasitoid species due to the difficulty of observing it. A stochastic model is formulated to determine the optimal strategy for a solitary parasitoid which has discovered an already parasitized host. The model assumes that the parasitoid can count both the number of eggs already present in a host and the number of conspecifics searching in the same patch. The survival probability of an egg is assumed to depend on the total number of eggs in a host. The decision to (super)parasitize depends both on the degree to which the discovered host already is parasitized and on the number of conspecific females searching in the same patch. We consider both the case that egg laying does not involve any costs for the parasitoid and the case that it involves some marginal costs. Uniform behaviour of all the conspecific parasitoids in a patch, i.e. laying one additional egg in all encountered larvae containing a particular number of eggs, appears to be a pure evolutionary stable strategy (ESS). If either the probability that a parasitoid emerges from a host decreases with an increasing degree of parasitism, at least from a particular number of eggs onwards, or if parasitism involves marginal costs, the maximum number of eggs for which it is still profitable to superparasitize a host once more is limited. This number increases with the number of conspecifics searching in the patch. Large marginal costs (i.e. the expected gain of not parasitizing now) decrease the profit of superparasitism. For newly emerged parasitoids the rejection of an already parasitized host is not advantageous as long as the marginal costs of parasitism are small, because the host can never contain an egg of its own.  相似文献

Arhopalus ferus (Mulsant) female pupae and adults were dissected, and both internal and external genitalia are described. The external genitalia involve segments 8 and 9. Segment 9 and its appendages are modified into a long ovipositor which telescopes with segment 8 into segment 7 when retracted. The internal genitalia include ovaries, bursa copulatrix, spermatheca, spermathecal gland, vagina, and accessory glands. Abstract. When the spermathecal muscle of a virgin female Chelymorpha alternans Boheman (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) was cut, the number of spermatozoa transferred in a single mating to the spermatheca and the spermathecal duct was not affected, but their distribution differed. Cutting the spermathecal muscle also reduced egg fertility. Eggs from females with a cut muscle showed a lower average percentage fertilization. Longer delays in oviposition after removal of the spermathecal muscle were associated with higher proportions of infertile eggs.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of the genital tracts in amphigonic females of Aphidoidea is described for the first time, using Euceraphis betulae Koch (Aphididae: Calaphidinae) as a representative. The female reproductive apparatus consists of two ovaries, each one with three/four meroistic telotrophic ovarioles; two sac‐like accessory glands lie laterally to a sac‐like seminal receptacle, opening into the dorso‐medial part of the common oviduct by means of a spermathecal duct. A marked secretory activity takes place in the epithelial cells of all the investigated tracts as shown by ultrastructural observation of many organelles involved in this process. No evident golgian area was observed in the cytoplasm of these cells. Extensive smooth endoplasmic reticulum, whose probable role is here discussed, was observed in epithelial cells of the wall of the accessory gland. Spermathecal duct and seminal receptacle had peculiar features that could be related to different secretory activities carried out by these two parts of the spermatheca.  相似文献

室内比较了寄生烟粉虱Bemisia tabaci的两种寄生蜂——丽蚜小蜂Encarsia formosa和浅黄恩蚜小蜂En. sophia的生物学特性,并研究了以烟粉虱为寄主时两种寄生蜂间的竞争关系。结果表明:两者的后足胫节长度间无显著差异。浅黄恩蚜小蜂的产卵器及卵均长于丽蚜小蜂的,但浅黄恩蚜小蜂的待产卵量显著少于丽蚜小蜂。浅黄恩蚜小蜂检测寄主所花时间短于丽蚜小蜂,但检查圈数显著多于丽蚜小蜂,产卵时间以丽蚜小蜂所花时间为多。以4龄初期的烟粉虱为寄主时,丽蚜小蜂的卵期为48 h,而浅黄恩蚜小蜂24 h即完成卵期的发育。后者的蛹历期也显著短于丽蚜小蜂的蛹历期。丽蚜小蜂由卵到成虫的总发育历期比浅黄恩蚜小蜂的要长72 h左右。一头丽蚜小蜂与一头浅黄恩蚜小蜂组合后的总产卵量为14.0粒,略高于两头丽蚜小蜂组合的总产卵量(10.2粒),显著高于两头浅黄恩蚜小蜂组合的产卵量(9.5粒);两种蜂组合的处理中被寄生寄主体内的着卵量为1.73粒,显著高于单独一种蜂组合中被寄生寄主的着卵量,后两者分别为1.29和1.39粒。在寄主竞争情况下,在被两种蜂均寄生的寄主体内丽蚜小蜂和浅黄恩蚜小蜂产入的卵量分别为1.21和1.43粒,显著高于仅被一种蜂寄生的寄主体内的对应蜂种的卵量,后者分别为1.06和1.19粒。结果提示两种蜂均能识别对方的存在,且浅黄恩蚜小蜂表现出更强的竞争能力。  相似文献

We investigated the histological structure of the female gonads and ovipositor of the European bitterling, Rhodeus amarus. The base of the ovipositor was formed by the conical organ or ‘eminence’. Based on the structure of the conical organ, including a special distribution of collagenous and muscular fibrils, a well‐developed vascular system and numerous scyphoid mucous cells in the internal epithelium, this organ was used for temporary storage of oocytes during the spawning period and for their movement along the ovipositor. An extensive network of blood vessels, muscular fibrils and numerous collagenous fibrils in the connective tissue of the ovipositor may make a functional contribution to the ovipositor by making it firmer during egg laying. Mucous cells were detected in the medial and distal regions of the ovipositor, which may play a role in facilitating insertion of the ovipositor into the exhalant siphon of a mussel during oviposition. European bitterling are batch spawners, and the female spawns eggs in clutches at intervals during the breeding season, which were visible as three distinct cohorts of oocytes in the ovary.  相似文献
