Particle tracking in living systems requires low light exposure and short exposure times to avoid phototoxicity and photobleaching and to fully capture particle motion with high-speed imaging. Low-excitation light comes at the expense of tracking accuracy. Image restoration methods based on deep learning dramatically improve the signal-to-noise ratio in low-exposure data sets, qualitatively improving the images. However, it is not clear whether images generated by these methods yield accurate quantitative measurements such as diffusion parameters in (single) particle tracking experiments. Here, we evaluate the performance of two popular deep learning denoising software packages for particle tracking, using synthetic data sets and movies of diffusing chromatin as biological examples. With synthetic data, both supervised and unsupervised deep learning restored particle motions with high accuracy in two-dimensional data sets, whereas artifacts were introduced by the denoisers in three-dimensional data sets. Experimentally, we found that, while both supervised and unsupervised approaches improved tracking results compared with the original noisy images, supervised learning generally outperformed the unsupervised approach. We find that nicer-looking image sequences are not synonymous with more precise tracking results and highlight that deep learning algorithms can produce deceiving artifacts with extremely noisy images. Finally, we address the challenge of selecting parameters to train convolutional neural networks by implementing a frugal Bayesian optimizer that rapidly explores multidimensional parameter spaces, identifying networks yielding optimal particle tracking accuracy. Our study provides quantitative outcome measures of image restoration using deep learning. We anticipate broad application of this approach to critically evaluate artificial intelligence solutions for quantitative microscopy.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to present a unifying view of four SVD-neural-computation techniques found in the scientific literature and to present some theoretical results on their behavior. The considered SVD neural algorithms are shown to arise as Riemannian-gradient flows on double Stiefel manifold and their geometric and dynamical properties are investigated with the help of differential geometry.  相似文献

An unsupervised neural network is proposed to learn and recall complex robot trajectories. Two cases are considered: (i) A single trajectory in which a particular arm configuration (state) may occur more than once, and (ii) trajectories sharing states with each other. Ambiguities occur in both cases during recall of such trajectories. The proposed model consists of two groups of synaptic weights trained by competitive and Hebbian learning laws. They are responsible for encoding spatial and temporal features of the input sequences, respectively. Three mechanisms allow the network to deal with repeated or shared states: local and global context units, neurons disabled from learning, and redundancy. The network reproduces the current and the next state of the learned sequences and is able to resolve ambiguities. The model was simulated over various sets of robot trajectories in order to evaluate learning and recall, trajectory sampling effects and robustness.  相似文献

We present machine learning approaches for turn prediction from the amino acid sequence. Different turn classes and types were considered based on a novel turn classification scheme. We trained an unsupervised (self-organizing map) and two kernel-based classifiers, namely the support vector machine and a probabilistic neural network. Turn versus non-turn classification was carried out for turn families containing intramolecular hydrogen bonds and three to six residues. Support vector machine classifiers yielded a Matthews correlation coefficient (mcc) of approximately 0.6 and a prediction accuracy of 80%. Probabilistic neural networks were developed for beta-turn type prediction. The method was able to distinguish between five types of beta-turns yielding mcc > 0.5 and at least 80% overall accuracy. We conclude that the proposed new turn classification is distinct and well-defined, and machine learning classifiers are suited for sequence-based turn prediction. Their potential for sequence-based prediction of turn structures is discussed.  相似文献

Working memory is a core component of critical cognitive functions such as planning and decision-making. Persistent activity that lasts long after the stimulus offset has been considered a neural substrate for working memory. Attractor dynamics based on network interactions can successfully reproduce such persistent activity. However, it requires a fine-tuning of network connectivity, in particular, to form continuous attractors which were suggested for encoding continuous signals in working memory. Here, we investigate whether a specific form of synaptic plasticity rules can mitigate such tuning problems in two representative working memory models, namely, rate-coded and location-coded persistent activity. We consider two prominent types of plasticity rules, differential plasticity correcting the rapid activity changes and homeostatic plasticity regularizing the long-term average of activity, both of which have been proposed to fine-tune the weights in an unsupervised manner. Consistent with the findings of previous works, differential plasticity alone was enough to recover a graded-level persistent activity after perturbations in the connectivity. For the location-coded memory, differential plasticity could also recover persistent activity. However, its pattern can be irregular for different stimulus locations under slow learning speed or large perturbation in the connectivity. On the other hand, homeostatic plasticity shows a robust recovery of smooth spatial patterns under particular types of synaptic perturbations, such as perturbations in incoming synapses onto the entire or local populations. However, homeostatic plasticity was not effective against perturbations in outgoing synapses from local populations. Instead, combining it with differential plasticity recovers location-coded persistent activity for a broader range of perturbations, suggesting compensation between two plasticity rules.  相似文献

The existence of spatially localized solutions in neural networks is an important topic in neuroscience as these solutions are considered to characterize working (short-term) memory. We work with an unbounded neural network represented by the neural field equation with smooth firing rate function and a wizard hat spatial connectivity. Noting that stationary solutions of our neural field equation are equivalent to homoclinic orbits in a related fourth order ordinary differential equation, we apply normal form theory for a reversible Hopf bifurcation to prove the existence of localized solutions; further, we present results concerning their stability. Numerical continuation is used to compute branches of localized solution that exhibit snaking-type behaviour. We describe in terms of three parameters the exact regions for which localized solutions persist.  相似文献

The brain performs various cognitive functions by learning the spatiotemporal salient features of the environment. This learning requires unsupervised segmentation of hierarchically organized spike sequences, but the underlying neural mechanism is only poorly understood. Here, we show that a recurrent gated network of neurons with dendrites can efficiently solve difficult segmentation tasks. In this model, multiplicative recurrent connections learn a context-dependent gating of dendro-somatic information transfers to minimize error in the prediction of somatic responses by the dendrites. Consequently, these connections filter the redundant input features represented by the dendrites but unnecessary in the given context. The model was tested on both synthetic and real neural data. In particular, the model was successful for segmenting multiple cell assemblies repeating in large-scale calcium imaging data containing thousands of cortical neurons. Our results suggest that recurrent gating of dendro-somatic signal transfers is crucial for cortical learning of context-dependent segmentation tasks.  相似文献

A large class of neural network models have their units organized in a lattice with fixed topology or generate their topology during the learning process. These network models can be used as neighborhood preserving map of the input manifold, but such a structure is difficult to manage since these maps are graphs with a number of nodes that is just one or two orders of magnitude less than the number of input points (i.e., the complexity of the map is comparable with the complexity of the manifold) and some hierarchical algorithms were proposed in order to obtain a high-level abstraction of these structures. In this paper a general structure capable to extract high order information from the graph generated by a large class of self-organizing networks is presented. This algorithm will allow to build a two layers hierarchical structure starting from the results obtained by using the suitable neural network for the distribution of the input data. Moreover the proposed algorithm is also capable to build a topology preserving map if it is trained using a graph that is also a topology preserving map.  相似文献

The recent increase in data accuracy from high resolution accelerometers offers substantial potential for improved understanding and prediction of animal movements. However, current approaches used for analysing these multivariable datasets typically require existing knowledge of the behaviors of the animals to inform the behavioral classification process. These methods are thus not well‐suited for the many cases where limited knowledge of the different behaviors performed exist. Here, we introduce the use of an unsupervised learning algorithm. To illustrate the method's capability we analyse data collected using a combination of GPS and Accelerometers on two seabird species: razorbills (Alca torda) and common guillemots (Uria aalge). We applied the unsupervised learning algorithm Expectation Maximization to characterize latent behavioral states both above and below water at both individual and group level. The application of this flexible approach yielded significant new insights into the foraging strategies of the two study species, both above and below the surface of the water. In addition to general behavioral modes such as flying, floating, as well as descending and ascending phases within the water column, this approach allowed an exploration of previously unstudied and important behaviors such as searching and prey chasing/capture events. We propose that this unsupervised learning approach provides an ideal tool for the systematic analysis of such complex multivariable movement data that are increasingly being obtained with accelerometer tags across species. In particular, we recommend its application in cases where we have limited current knowledge of the behaviors performed and existing supervised learning approaches may have limited utility.  相似文献

A functional model of biological neural networks, called temporal hierarchical probabilistic associative memory (THPAM), is proposed in this paper. THPAM comprises functional models of dendritic trees for encoding inputs to neurons, a first type of neuron for generating spike trains, a second type of neuron for generating graded signals to modulate neurons of the first type, supervised and unsupervised Hebbian learning mechanisms for easy learning and retrieving, an arrangement of dendritic trees for maximizing generalization, hardwiring for rotation-translation-scaling invariance, and feedback connections with different delay durations for neurons to make full use of present and past informations generated by neurons in the same and higher layers. These functional models and their processing operations have many functions of biological neural networks that have not been achieved by other models in the open literature and provide logically coherent answers to many long-standing neuroscientific questions. However, biological justifications of these functional models and their processing operations are required for THPAM to qualify as a macroscopic model (or low-order approximate) of biological neural networks.  相似文献

We present for mental processes the program of mathematical mapping which has been successfully realized for physical processes. We emphasize that our project is not about mathematical simulation of the brain's functioning as a complex physical system, i.e., mapping of physical and chemical processes in the brain on mathematical spaces. The project is about mapping of purely mental processes on mathematical spaces. We present various arguments--philosophic, mathematical, information, and neurophysiological--in favor of the p-adic model of mental space. p-adic spaces have structures of hierarchic trees and in our model such a tree hierarchy is considered as an image of neuronal hierarchy. Hierarchic neural pathways are considered as fundamental units of information processing. As neural pathways can go through the whole body, the mental space is produced by the whole neural system. Finally, we develop the probabilistic neural pathway model in that mental states are represented by probability distributions on mental space.  相似文献

Despite of the many successful applications of backpropagation for training multi-layer neural networks, it has many drawbocks. For complex problems it may require a long time to train the networks, and it may not train at all. Long training time can be the result of the non-optimal parameters. It is not easy to choose appropriate value of the parameters for a particular problem. In this paper, by interconnection of fixed structure learning automata (FSLA) to the feedforward neural networks, we apply learning automata (LA) scheme for adjusting these parameters based on the observation of random response of neural networks. The main motivation in using learning automata as an adaptation algorithm is to use its capability of global optimization when dealing with multi-modal surface. The feasibility of proposed method is shown through simulations on three learning problems: exclusive-or, encoding problem, and digit recognition. The simulation results show that the adaptation of these parameters using this method not only increases the convergence rate of learning but it increases the likelihood of escaping from the local minima.  相似文献

Pitch perception is important for understanding speech prosody, music perception, recognizing tones in tonal languages, and perceiving speech in noisy environments. The two principal pitch perception theories consider the place of maximum neural excitation along the auditory nerve and the temporal pattern of the auditory neurons’ action potentials (spikes) as pitch cues. This paper describes a biophysical mechanism by which fine-structure temporal information can be extracted from the spikes generated at the auditory periphery. Deriving meaningful pitch-related information from spike times requires neural structures specialized in capturing synchronous or correlated activity from amongst neural events. The emergence of such pitch-processing neural mechanisms is described through a computational model of auditory processing. Simulation results show that a correlation-based, unsupervised, spike-based form of Hebbian learning can explain the development of neural structures required for recognizing the pitch of simple and complex tones, with or without the fundamental frequency. The temporal code is robust to variations in the spectral shape of the signal and thus can explain the phenomenon of pitch constancy.  相似文献

The self-organizing map (SOM), as a kind of unsupervised neural network, has been used for both static data management and dynamic data analysis. To further exploit its search abilities, in this paper we propose an SOM-based algorithm (SOMS) for optimization problems involving both static and dynamic functions. Furthermore, a new SOM weight updating rule is proposed to enhance the learning efficiency; this may dynamically adjust the neighborhood function for the SOM in learning system parameters. As a demonstration, the proposed SOMS is applied to function optimization and also dynamic trajectory prediction, and its performance compared with that of the genetic algorithm (GA) due to the similar ways both methods conduct searches.  相似文献

Summary Regularities in the environment are accessible to an autonomous agents as reproducible relations between actions and perceptions and can be exploited by unsupervised learning. Our approach is based on the possibility to perform and to verify predictions about perceivable consequences of actions. It is implemented as a three-layer neural network that combines predictive perception, internal-state transitions and action selection into a loop which closes via the environment. In addition to minimizing prediction errors, the goal of network adaptation comprises also an optimization of the minimization rate such that new behaviors are favored over already learned ones, which would result in a vanishing improvement of predictability. Previously learned behaviors are reactivated or continued if triggering stimuli are available and an externally or otherwise given reward overcompensates the decay of the learning rate. In the model, behavior learning and learning behavior are brought about by the same mechanism, namely the drive to continuously experience learning success. Behavior learning comprises representation and storage of learned behaviors and finally their inhibition such that a further exploration of the environment is possible. Learning behavior, in contrast, detects the frontiers of the manifold of learned behaviors and provides estimates of the learnability of behaviors leading outwards the field of expertise. The network module has been implemented in a Khepera miniature robot. We also consider hierarchical architectures consisting of several modules in one agent as well as groups of several agents, which are controlled by such networks.  相似文献

One popular learning algorithm for feedforward neural networks is the backpropagation (BP) algorithm which includes parameters, learning rate (eta), momentum factor (alpha) and steepness parameter (lambda). The appropriate selections of these parameters have large effects on the convergence of the algorithm. Many techniques that adaptively adjust these parameters have been developed to increase speed of convergence. In this paper, we shall present several classes of learning automata based solutions to the problem of adaptation of BP algorithm parameters. By interconnection of learning automata to the feedforward neural networks, we use learning automata scheme for adjusting the parameters eta, alpha, and lambda based on the observation of random response of the neural networks. One of the important aspects of the proposed schemes is its ability to escape from local minima with high possibility during the training period. The feasibility of proposed methods is shown through simulations on several problems.  相似文献

Multi-atlas segmentation has been widely used to segment various anatomical structures. The success of this technique partly relies on the selection of atlases that are best mapped to a new target image after registration. Recently, manifold learning has been proposed as a method for atlas selection. Each manifold learning technique seeks to optimize a unique objective function. Therefore, different techniques produce different embeddings even when applied to the same data set. Previous studies used a single technique in their method and gave no reason for the choice of the manifold learning technique employed nor the theoretical grounds for the choice of the manifold parameters. In this study, we compare side-by-side the results given by 3 manifold learning techniques (Isomap, Laplacian Eigenmaps and Locally Linear Embedding) on the same data set. We assess the ability of those 3 different techniques to select the best atlases to combine in the framework of multi-atlas segmentation. First, a leave-one-out experiment is used to optimize our method on a set of 110 manually segmented atlases of hippocampi and find the manifold learning technique and associated manifold parameters that give the best segmentation accuracy. Then, the optimal parameters are used to automatically segment 30 subjects from the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). For our dataset, the selection of atlases with Locally Linear Embedding gives the best results. Our findings show that selection of atlases with manifold learning leads to segmentation accuracy close to or significantly higher than the state-of-the-art method and that accuracy can be increased by fine tuning the manifold learning process.  相似文献
