直鬃蓟马属Stenchaetothrips是由Bagnall(1926)以Stenchaetothrips melanurusBagnall为模式种建立的,Mound(1968)曾将该属列为Baliothrips Uzel,1895属的异名。Bhatti和Mound(1980)检验了有关模式标本后认为,Stenchaetothrips属与Baliothrips属实为两个不同的属,同时指出,Priesner(1957)根据成虫中、后胸腹板内骨不具小刺(spinula)为主要特征建立的Chloethrips属,应为Stenchaetothrips属的异名。

New Neotropical Species of the Genus Frankliniella Karny (Insecta: Thysanoptera: Thripidae)

Four new species of the genus Frankliniella Karny are described, two from Chile, F. rahakana sp. n. and F. otites sp. n.; one from Costa Rica, F. senckenbergiana sp. n. and one from Argentina, F. amigoi sp. n. F. rahakana sp. n. belongs to the ‘intonsa group’ and the other three to the ‘minuta group’ of Frankliniella.     

First Record of Elixothrips brevisetis (Bagnall) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) in Brazil

Elixothrips brevisetis (Bagnall), a species exotic to Brazil, is first recorded in the country. Individuals were collected on banana fruits (Musa sp.) (Musaceae) in July 2010 in the municipality of Luís Alves, state of Santa Catarina, causing rusting on the fruit peel in several bunches of bananas.

Spatiotemporal population dynamics of the banana rind thrips,Elixothrips brevisetis (Bagnall) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae)

The understanding of how environmental factors and agricultural practices affect population dynamics of insect pests is necessary for pest management. Here, we provide insight into the ecology of the banana rind thrips Elixothrips brevisetis (Bagnall) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) by collecting and analysing a spatiotemporal database of population estimates in Martinique (West French Indies). We assessed the influence of climatic variables (which were rainfall and temperature) and biotic variables (which were banana and three weed species) on the adult thrips abundance for different components of the banana plant (sucker, mother plant and bunch) and evaluated the effect of thrips abundance and standard bunch covers on damages. The abundance of thrips on the sucker, the mother plant, and the bunch was significantly related to the abundance on neighbouring banana plants, and spatial autocorrelation indicated that E. brevisetis dispersed for only short distances. The number of thrips on the mother plant and on the bunch was positively related to the number of thrips on the sucker, suggesting that the thrips may disperse from the sucker to the mother plant and then to the bunch. The abundance of thrips on the sucker increased with sucker height and was positively correlated with the mean daily rainfall during the 17 days before sampling; the length of that period might correspond with the time required for an individual to complete its life cycle. Covered bunches had 98% fewer thrips than non‐covered bunches, and the damage caused by thrips was linearly related to the number of thrips present between the 2nd and 4th week after flowering. Finally, we found that the presence of Alocasia cucullata, Dieffenbachia seguine and Peperomia pellucida is significantly related with a decrease in thrips abundance on banana plants, suggesting the use of these weeds as potential trap plants.

Studies on Kelly's citrus thrips, Pezothrips kellyanus (Bagnall) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae): sex attractants, host associations and country of origin

Abstract  Under controlled conditions of 25°C and 14 h light, adult Pezothrips kellyanus (Bagnall) were observed to have a peak mating time at 17:00 h, this almost coinciding with the time of minimum feeding. Filter papers on which males had walked attracted both sexes, the attraction being strongest when the odour was collected during the mating period and subsequently offered during this period. Field observations indicate that males aggregate and that females approach such aggregations for mating. In Australia, in the vicinity of citrus orchards, this thrips is associated particularly with non-Australian perfumed white flowers. However, recent collecting indicates that the species is widespread in south-eastern coastal areas far distant from citrus cultivation, in the flowers of an Australian native plant, Myoporum insulare . Despite this host plant evidence, morphological evidence continues to suggest retention of the species in the northern hemisphere genus Pezothrips Karny, and thus the country of origin of the pest remains in doubt.

The grass-living genus Aptinothrips Haliday (Thysanoptera: Thripidae)

A key is provided to the species of Aptinothrips: elegans Priesner, karnyi John, rufus (Haliday) and stylifer Trybom, with notes on their biology, host preferences and distribution. The following new synonymies are also included: Thrips imaginis Bagnall (= Aptinothrips apertus Kelly and Mayne); Aptinothrips stylifer Trybom (= Aptinothrips nitidulus forma groenlandica Richter).     

A newly recorded genus of the Rhamphothrips genus-group (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) from China

The genus Parexothrips Priesner of Rhamphothrips genus-group(Thripidae: Thripinae) is recorded in China for the first time. A new record species, Parexothrips tenellus(Priesner), is described and illustrated from China. A key to genera of Chinese Rhamphothrips genus-group is provided. Examined specimens are deposited in the Insect Collection of Department of Entomology, South China Agricultural University(SCAU).
