Hybrid breeding of rice via genomic selection   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Hybrid breeding is the main strategy for improving productivity in many crops, especially in rice and maize. Genomic hybrid breeding is a technology that uses whole‐genome markers to predict future hybrids. Predicted superior hybrids are then field evaluated and released as new hybrid cultivars after their superior performances are confirmed. This will increase the opportunity of selecting true superior hybrids with minimum costs. Here, we used genomic best linear unbiased prediction to perform hybrid performance prediction using an existing rice population of 1495 hybrids. Replicated 10‐fold cross‐validations showed that the prediction abilities on ten agronomic traits ranged from 0.35 to 0.92. Using the 1495 rice hybrids as a training sample, we predicted six agronomic traits of 100 hybrids derived from half diallel crosses involving 21 parents that are different from the parents of the hybrids in the training sample. The prediction abilities were relatively high, varying from 0.54 (yield) to 0.92 (grain length). We concluded that the current population of 1495 hybrids can be used to predict hybrids from seemingly unrelated parents. Eventually, we used this training population to predict all potential hybrids of cytoplasm male sterile lines from 3000 rice varieties from the 3K Rice Genome Project. Using a breeding index combining 10 traits, we identified the top and bottom 200 predicted hybrids. SNP genotypes of the training population and parameters estimated from this training population are available for general uses and further validation in genomic hybrid prediction of all potential hybrids generated from all varieties of rice.  相似文献

A method is presented for the selection of parents with the aim of obtaining improved genotypes in the progeny of a cross. The procedure is designed to select in several unrelated traits simultaneously and is based on the selection of molecular markers that are linked to QTLs. The method was compared with conventional phenotypic selection in simulation experiments for a number of genetic structures underlying the traits and several types of parental populations. Although the method in general provides good results, some of the underlying assumptions may be violated quite easily, thereby reducing the applicability of the procedure in practice. Marker-assisted selection in autogamous RIL populations: a simulation study   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
 Molecular markers may enable plant breeders to select indirectly for genes affecting quantitative traits by selecting for molecular markers closely linked to these genes (marker-assisted selection, MAS). We have assessed the effectiveness of MAS compared to phenotypic selection. Key variables in this assessment were: trait heritability, selection intensity, genetic architecture and uncertainty in QTL mapping. Simulation studies showed that the application of MAS in autogamous crops, with the objective of obtaining transgressive genotypes, can improve selection results when compared to conventional selection procedures. Marker-assisted selection appears particularly promising when dominant alleles at quantitative trait loci are present and linked in coupling phase. Uncertainty in estimated QTL map positions reduces the benefits of marker-assisted selection, but this reduction remains limited in most cases. General quantitative genetic properties are derived for the F2 originating from self-fertilisation of hybrid (F1) individuals. These results extend and generalize previous restricted knowledge about this F2. New equations are found for all genotype frequencies, allele frequencies, inbreeding coefficient, genic (additive-genetic) and dominance variances, broadsense and narrowsense heritabilities, and selection potential. The bulk mean is generally lower, and the genotypic variance is generally higher, than those of the F1 and the allogamous F2. Genic and dominance variances for the selfed F2 are very different to the classical counterparts. Their relationships with inbreeding have been investigated, and they are more elaborate than previously considered. The level of inbreeding is constant irrespective of parental combinations, which is different to the inbreeding of an allogamous F2. Selection potential is generally high, and selection advance generally exceeds bulk inbreeding depression. If selection is assisted by dispersion, the autogamous F2 may obtain greater genetic advance than its allogamous counterpart for the same selection pressure. Under conditions of spatially separated F2, swarms, natural selection may be enhanced by selfing.  相似文献

Accuracy of mapping quantitative trait loci in autogamous species   总被引:21,自引:0,他引:21  
Summary The development of linkage maps with large numbers of molecular markers has stimulated the search for methods to map genes involved in quantitative traits (QTLs). A promising method, proposed by Lander and Botstein (1989), employs pairs of neighbouring markers to obtain maximum linkage information about the presence of a QTL within the enclosed chromosomal segment. In this paper the accuracy of this method was investigated by computer simulation. The results show that there is a reasonable probability of detecting QTLs that explain at least 5% of the total variance. For this purpose a minimum population of 200 backcross or F2 individuals is necessary. Both the number of individuals and the relative size of the genotypic effect of the QTL are important factors determining the mapping precision. On the average, a QTL with 5% or 10% explained variance is mapped on an interval of 40 or 20 centiMorgans, respectively. Of course, QTLs with a larger genotypic effect will be located more precisely. It must be noted, however, that the interval length is rather variable.  相似文献

Is there any risk that the threshold for admixture of genetically modified seeds in the harvest of a conventional cultivar, 0.9% in Europe, will be exceeded in the case of inbreeder crops? Using herbicide-resistant foxtail millet, Setaria italica, as a model of a preferentially autogamous crop, such as wheat and rice, field experiments show that genotype admixture due to pollen flow between adjacent fields is about 0.03% on average for the 10 adjacent meters, and 10 times less in the next 20-m lane. In the case of a maternally inherited resistance gene, the admixture rate is at least 100 times lower. Recessive herbicide resistance has also been tested but would be efficient only if the agreed coexistence rules were based on phenotype detection.  相似文献

Saponins are a diverse family of secondary metabolites that are produced by many plant species, particularly dicots. These molecules commonly have potent antifungal activity and their natural role in plants is likely to be in protection against attack by pathogenic microbes. They also have a variety of commercial applications including use as drugs and medicines. The enzymes, genes and biochemical pathways involved in the synthesis of these complex molecules are largely uncharacterized for any plant species. Cereals and grasses appear to be generally deficient in saponins with the exception of oats, which produce both steroidal and triterpenoid saponins. The isolation of genes for saponin biosynthesis from oats is now providing tools for the analysis of the evolution and regulation of saponin biosynthesis in monocots. These genes may also have potential for the development of improved disease resistance in cultivated cereals.  相似文献

Sib-seedlings of 95 strains of the strictly autogamous grass Hordeum euclaston were analyzed by horizontal polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis for four isoenzyme systems at a specific ontogenetic stage. We found differences in the activity of some genes among individuals of this species. Hence, an ontogenetic analysis was carried out to investigate 12 strains at five ontogenetic stages, to determine the patterns of expression of these genes during development. The differences in the presence versus absence of certain isoenzyme bands may be due to differential regulatory activation in response to environmental differences, as all plants showed the same structural genes, although these genes were active in different tissues and/or times of development. These results indicate the importance of differential gene activation in the metabolic phenotype variability of this strictly autogamous, highly homozygous species. The same structural alleles for isoenzymes showed the active form of the enzymes (phenotypic expression) to be present in different tissues and/or stages of development. Differential isoenzyme gene activation was shown to be directly responsible for the enzymatic variability (metabolic phenotype) presented by the plants, which seem to possess almost no heterozygosis.  相似文献

Summary Wide hybridization is a useful tool in plant breeding, but little is known about its possible range. For the cereals, wheat, barley and rye, this was tested with 15 different species of the Poaceae and Panicoideae. Embryo formation could be obtained with Agropyron repens, Alopecurus agrestis, Dactylis glomerata, Festuca glauca, Hordeum bulbosum, Lolium perenne, Pennisetum americanum, and Zea mays. As well, haploid as diploid embryos occurred. New embryo culture techniques should enable these embryos to grow to plants.  相似文献

Limnanthes floccosa Howell is a variable autogamous species of recent origin. The phenetic relationships of a large number of populations ofL. floccosa were studied using taximetric techniques. Five subspecies are recognized inL. floccosa on the basis of the taximetric results.Limnanthes floccosa ssp.californica andL. floccosa ssp.grandiflora are described as new, andL. floccosa ssp.pumila andL. floccosa ssp.bellingeriana are proposed as new combinations. The combination of mutational and molecular studies has shed light on the role of reactive oxygen intermediates and programmed cell death in cereal disease resistance mechanisms. Rice Rac1 and barley Rar1 represent conserved disease resistance signalling genes, which may have related functions in animals. The analysis of non-pathogenic Magnaporthe grisea mutants may provide novel tools to study host defence pathways.  相似文献
