A total of 41 faeces and 5 vomits of the Weddell seal Leptonychotes weddelli was collected at Harmony Point, Nelson Island, South Shetland Islands, from 14 January to 1 February 1996. The diet indicated
by the remains in the samples was diverse and comprised both pelagic and benthic-demersal species. Fish were the most frequent
(95.7%) and numerous prey (46.2%), but molluscs were the most important by mass (65.8%). Octopods, mainly Pareledone charcoti, constituted the bulk of the diet (63.1% by mass), but the importance of the remaining molluscs was negligible. Otoliths
represented 510 fish of which 491 were identified as belonging to 5 species: Gymnoscopelus nicholsi, Electrona antarctica, Lepidonotothen nudifrons, Gobionotothen gibberifrons and Nototheniops nybelini. The myctophid Gymnoscopelus nicholsi was the most important fish prey, and the contribution of benthic-demersal species was low. However, the importance of that
fish was over-estimated since 96% of the specimens were obtained from the five vomits analysed. The biases associated with
the faecal analysis technique are discussed.

Egg variability and hatching success in the Cape petrel Daption capense at Nelson Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Eggs of the Cape petrel Daption capense at Nelson Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica, exhibited high variability in volume between females (up to 48%), while for each individual female, both volume and shape of eggs were highly correlated over two seasons. Both female size and body-condition at laying were unrelated to egg-volume in the 'good'season 1991, but larger females produced larger eggs in the 'bad'season 1990, when eggs were smaller on average. In 1991, females in better body-condition, but not larger, started laying earlier. In spite of synchronized laying (75% of eggs laid within five days), egg-volume decreased with laying date. Egg-volume differed significantly between the two years, which could not be explained by changes in the breeding population or timing of breeding. The laying of relatively small eggs and low overall breeding success in 1990 most probably reflected changes in food availability. Overall hatchability was 88% and did not differ significantly between disturbed and control colonies in 1991. Larger and more rounded eggs showed better hatching success, but hatchability was related more to egg-volume whereas hatching rate was related more to egg-shape. As the majority of egg losses were attributable to predation, the hatching rate was influenced by parental performance relatively more than by hatchability. Hence the relationship between hatching rate and egg-shape probably reflects improvement in hatching success with female age/experience, whereas the relationship between egg-size and hatchability suggests effect of egg-size independently of parental traits. 相似文献

All of the fish identified in stomach contents and regurgitations of breeding and chick Cape petrels collected during January and February 1996 at Fildes Peninsula and Harmony Point, both in the South Shetland Islands and at Laurie Island, South Orkney Islands, were myctophids, a family never previously reported in the diet of breeding Cape petrels. Electrona antarctica was the most important fish prey, followed by Electrona carlsbergi at Fildes Peninsula, Krefftichthys anderssoni at Harmony Point and Gymnoscopelus braueri at Laurie Island. Seabirds and their response to climate perturbations are important bioindicators of changes in Antarctic ecosystems. During 30?years of observations of two chinstrap penguin (Pygoscelis antarcticus) colonies, one on King George Island and the other on Penguin Island (South Shetland Islands, Antarctica), the size of the breeding populations decreased by 84 and 41?%, respectively. We applied analyses of amplified fragment length polymorphisms to study the genetic structure of the two populations and to evaluate the influence of the sudden population decrease. Our data indicate that there were only weak genetic differences between the populations, which were not strong enough to support the hypothesis of population differentiation. Weak genetic differences observed between the two populations seem not to be determined by selection processes. We hypothesize that the very low level of between-population genetic structure can be explained by some extent of genetic drift, which is largely compensated by gene flow. Moreover, the two populations seem to remain in a stationary state. Our results support the hypothesis of limited natal philopatry in chinstrap penguins. The observed decrease in population size is probably caused by emigration or a rise in juvenile mortality due to the increasing krill limitation of the marine food web. Summary Approximately 1000 specimens belonging to eight fish species were collected at Potter Cove, King George Island, South Shetland Islands, from August 1985 to May 1986. This study deals with the dominant species Notothenia neglecta, Notothenia gibberifrons, Trematomus newnesi and Notothenia rossii marmorata. Age and size structure of the fish were analyzed using scale and otolith readings. Notothenia neglecta was the most abundant species. It spawns in the austral autumn. Juvenile N. rossii marmorata migrate offshore when sexually mature. Over eight hundred stomach contents were analyzed. The four species studied were generally benthophagous. However, in summer T. newnesi and N. rossii marmorata, carried out vertical migrations, feeding on pelagic organisms. Gammarid amphipods constituted the main food in all four species. Algae were consumed regularly throughout the year and we suggest that they are intentially eaten by the fish, rather than by accident. Two 48 hour sampling periods, carried out in summer of 1987, showed that N. neglecta was more active during the day. 相似文献

Diving behavior of 2 breeding Chinstrap penguins (Pygoscelis antarctica) was studied focusing first and primarily on dive bouts rather than dives themselves. Analysis of dive bout organization
revealed (1) though there are differences between solitary dives and dive bouts in dive duration and dive depth, the first
dives of dive bouts do not differ from solitary dives in the dive parameters, (2) mean dive duration during bout correlates
positively to both mean dive depth during bout and mean surface interval during bout, while number of dives during bout negatively
correlates to both cost (consumed energy) and duration of a dive cycle during bout. These findings suggest the following possibilities
on foraging behavior of penguins: (1) their decision to repeat diving depends on the result of the first dive at a site, and
the first dives of bouts would tend to be searching or evaluating dives though they would be also successful foraging dives,
(2) they repeat diving at a foraging patch until foraging efficiency decrease to a threshold of diminishing returns. 相似文献

Every year, shortly after the emancipation of chicks at our study colony (Deception Island, South Shetlands), hundreds of carcasses of presumably starved Chinstrap penguin Pygoscelis antarctica chicks are washed on the shore. In 1997 we measured the flippers of fresh carcasses and compared their lengths with those of live chicks about to become independent. There was a highly significant difference of 6.5 mm between both distributions, which suggests strong directional phenotypic selection on skeletal size operating through its association with body reserves at independence. Given that heritabilities of flipper length and body weight measured on 36 families are 0.73(± 0.32) and 0.075(± 0.081), and that both characters show a genetic correlation of 0.44(± 0.14), we can expect an evolutionary response to this selection episode. Assuming that the target of selection is weight at emancipation (heavier chicks carry proportionally larger reserves), and that flipper length changes as a consequence of its genetic correlation with weight, we can predict a response of 1.32–2.87 mm or 0.23–0.51 standard deviation units for flipper length. This substantial evolutionary response may be countered by other selective pressures affecting other life stages of these birds. Selection on reserve storage capacity at independence may affect morphological traits also in other species. 相似文献

Labelled-water methodology was used to quantify energy costs and energy transfer efficiency in 18 mother-pup pairs of southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina) during lactation. During the lactation period, mothers lost a mean mass of 227±47 kg. Mass loss included 22% of the protein, 60% of the fat, and 51% of the energy in the mothers body upon arrival. Total body-energy reserves at parturition explained 69% of the variation in the total lactation costs and 50% of the variation in the pups body energy at weaning. On average, pups retained 48% of the mass, 49% of protein, 53% of fat and 51% of energy lost by their mothers. Greater, fatter females showed a decrease in the efficiency of energy and fat transfer and, at the same time, an increase in the efficiency of protein transfer. This may be due to an increased use of protein as metabolic fuel, as fat demands for milk production increase. There was no evidence that greater total lactation costs influence the ability of mothers to produce a pup in the next breeding season. 相似文献

Inter-annual variation in the diet of female southern rockhopper penguins (Eudyptes chrysocome chrysocome) at Staten Island was studied during the early chick-rearing period to investigate the components of the diet and highlight some points of the possible food web in the study area. Gregarious crustaceans, small juveniles of squid and octopus, fish larvae and juvenile fish dominated the diet. There was a high degree of variability in the relative contribution of the different prey taxa during the three seasons studied. Overall, crustaceans were by far the most abundant in terms of number. Cephalopods contributed less to numbers, while fish was the least represented of the prey item in 2 years. Inter-annual variation in the proportion of prey items consumed was apparent only for some prey species: Thysanoessa gregaria, Gonatus antarcticus, Themisto gaudichaudii, Harpagifer bispinis and Salilota australis. These data suggest variability in the prey resources at sea during the study period and a subsequent opportunism of this penguin species to exploit what is differentially available. In terms of the food web in the area, we suggest an apparent relationship in the availability between T. gaudichaudii and G. antarcticus, and between T. gaudichaudii and H bispinnis. These relationships emphasise the importance of understanding food web interactions, especially those involving multiple trophic levels, when determining the role of upper-trophic level predators in marine systems. 相似文献

The diet of Harpagifer antarcticus was studied at two localities of the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. The analysis of the stomach contents of specimens
collected in tide pools at Potter Cove, King George Island, indicated that gammarid amphipods (mainly Gondogeneia sp.) were the main prey of this fish, followed by polychaetes, gastropods and isopods. By contrast, the specimens from Harmony
Point, Nelson Island, which were recovered from stomach contents of Antarctic shags Phalacrocorax bransfieldensis feeding at depths of 46–110 m, preyed almost exclusively on the Antarctic krill Euphausia superba. These results are discussed and compared with previous studies.

The number of Antarctic fur seals Arctocephalus gazella hauled out at Signy Island in the South Orkneys was monitored annually between 1977 and 2008. Over the study period seal
abundance showed a tenfold increase, from a minimum of 1,643 seals in 1978 to a maximum of 21,303 in 1994. The majority of
individuals observed were young adult males, likely to be migrants from South Georgia, with small numbers of female seals
and only 65 pups recorded during the survey period. Variability in counts showed a similar pattern to Laurie Island, also
in the South Orkneys archipelago, suggesting a similar annual immigration of seals to these two islands. The date of first
seal arrival was correlated with the date of fast-ice breakout at Factory Cove, Signy Island, and years in which break out
was exceptionally late (>21 December) corresponded with years of reduced seal abundance. While the presence of fast-ice during
the early breeding season may currently inhibit the establishment of a major breeding population of fur seals at Signy Island,
it is important that routine monitoring should continue, particularly in the light of current patterns of climate warming

Among the South Shetland Islands, the potential competition for krill (Euphausia superba) between the Japanese fishery and krill-eating breeding penguins was assessed. A low level of competition was apparent due to several factors. Spatial overlap between the main fishing and foraging areas was insignificant. Firstly, the large colonies of the dominant penguin (chinstrap penguins,Pygoscelis antarctica) occurred where sea ice disappears early in spring, and not necessarily where krill are abundant in summer, i.e. the area of krill fishery. Secondly, overlap between trawling depth and foraging dive depth of penguins was marginal, with the latter depth being shallower. Moreover, overlap in the size-frequency of krill caught by trawlers and those captured by penguins was not complete; the penguins took larger krill on average. Finally, the present small fishery is unlikely to impact upon local krill biomass in the region. Krill biomass was estimated to be 250–1500 × 103 tonnes within the preferred fishing areas during summer. The present catch rate by the fishery (≤13 × 103 tonnes/half-month period) is smaller by an order of magnitude, and the fishing area does not include the main foraging areas of breeding penguins. 相似文献

The diet of the Southern rockhopper penguin at Beauchene Island, Falkland Islands, was studied in the early chick-rearing period by quantitative analysis of adult stomach contents. Juvenile squid (Teuthowenia sp.) comprised on average 21% by numbers (c. 1000 per sample) and 53% by weight; crustaceans contributed 79% by numbers (c. 4000 per sample) but only 45% by weight, and fish 2% by weight. Of the crustaceans only the euphausids Euphausia lucens (66% by numbers), E. vallentini (19%) and Thysanoessa gregaria (15%) were present in significant quantities, and all are swarming species characteristic of the Patagonian shelf epipelagic zooplankton. Comparison is made with the limited dietary data available from other studies, and rockhopper penguins are suggested typically to feed opportunistically on swarming or shoaling zooplankton (particularly euphausids and young squid) and small fish. Whereas the average weight of the stomach contents was 220 g, the biomass of the individuals originally ingested was estimated to total 800 g; the c. 3000 kj this represents is consistent with the likely energy requirements of adults making daily foraging trips to rear small chicks. 相似文献

Foraminiferal samples were taken from bottom sediments at Marian Cove, West Antarctica, in order to determine the depth zonation and foraminiferal species composition. Benthic foraminiferal communities are mainly composed of calcareous, agglutinated, and mixed associations. The Fisher-α diversity of the total assemblage groups is close to 6.0. The dominance/diversity patterns are characterized by low dominance and high diversity.Three zones are recognized at Marian Cove with depth boundaries at 22 and 65.5 m. Areas shallower than 22 m are nearly devoid of any toraminifera. Calcareous forms and/or calcareous forms mixed with agglutinated forms are relatively abundant between 22 and 65.5 m, while agglutinated forms dominate below 65.5 m. 相似文献

The intensity of stone collection and stone theft by breeding Chinstrap penguins was measured, and estimations made of the number of stones per nest in large (> 400 nests) and small subcolonies (< 50 nests) in the large Vapour Col colony on Deception Island, South Shetland Islands. Stone availability was significantly higher both inside and outside small subcolonies. Penguins carried stones to the nest at the same rate in large and small subcolonies, but stole more intensively in large subcolonies. Stones obtained by theft were significantly larger than those collected elsewhere. When stone availability was increased experimentally, individuals of large subcolonies collected more intensively than control individuals in large and small subcolonies, and stole significantly less than control individuals in large subcolonies, and as much as individuals in small subcolonies. The greater theft pressure in large subcolonies was accompanied by more aggressive defence by nest owners and by reduced succession stealing. However, the reduced availability of stones on the ground near large subcolonies led to a significantly lower number of stones per nest than in small subcolonies. These results are interpreted in the light of the geometric effects of breeding group size (perimeter to surface ratio) on stone accessibility. 相似文献

The diet of breeding and non-breeding Wilson's storm-petrels (Oceanites oceanicus) was analysed over four breeding seasons on King George Island, South Shetland Islands, in order to test if there are changes in diet composition within and between seasons. Krill was the most important food item, followed by myctophid fish and amphipods. Breeding birds showed a clear seasonal pattern of diet, with krill decreasing and alternative prey increasing from the incubation to the chick-rearing period. Non-breeders were not found to change their diet composition. The data suggest that Wilson's storm-petrels selectively choose alternative prey to krill in order to meet the nutrient demands of their chicks. In years of low food availability, Wilson's storm-petrels may have a limited option of prey choice. 相似文献

In February 1992, 34 faecal samples from non-breeding male Antarctic fur seals, Arctocephalus gazella, were collected at Stranger Point, King George Island, South Shetlands. Fish constituted an important part of the diet, occurring
in 90% of those scats containing prey remains. From 1162 otoliths found in the faeces, 1086 were identified to at least family
level. Myctophids and nototheniids represented together almost 90% of the fish eaten. The dominant species were Gymnoscopelus nicholsi, Pleuragramma antarcticum and Electrona antarctica, contributing 33.3%, 30.8% and 12.0% of the otoliths respectively. The standard length of these three species was estimated
from otoliths with little or no signs of erosion. This study showed that fur seals fed mainly on pelagic fish species that
are often associated with krill. These findings are corroborated by fur seal diving patterns.

During the BENTART 95 survey, epifauna was sampled with an Agassiz trawl at 24 stations ranging from north of Livingston Island (South Shetland Islands) to the Antarctic Peninsula at depths from 40 to 850 m. Four assemblages of ophiuroids were identified and correspond to Deception Island, Trinity Island, and the southern and northern zones of Livingston Island. In addition to these regions, gradients related to depth and filter-feeder biomass were found. The brittle-star assemblages were dominated by Ophionotus victoriae Bell, 1902, which to a large extent determine the biogeographic structure in the South Shetland Islands. 相似文献
