In shallow, wind exposed lakes, the light conditions, the cycling of nutrients, heavy metals and organic micro-pollutants and changes in the local composition of the sediment top layer can be dominated by resuspension/erosion of bottom sediment and sedimentation of suspended solids. A 2 dimensional model for Sediment Transport, Resuspension and Sedimentation in Shallow lakes (STRESS-2d), based on an existing transport model, is discussed. In the model, mass balance equations for the water compartment and the bottom sediment are solved numerically. Up to 7 sediment fractions can be taken into account, each having a specific set of resuspension/erosion and sedimentation parameter values. Several options for modelling the changes in the bottom sediment composition are available.A simulation experiment for Lake Veluwe (The Netherlands), in which model options with and without the distinction of sediment fractions were used, showed that using sediment fractions to account for the variability in the sediment composition leads to an improvement of the model results, particularly the simulated phosphorus sediment-water exchange fluxes. For Lake Ketel (The Netherlands) two options for modelling changes in the bottom sediment composition are compared. It is shown that an option in which a thin water-sediment layer on top of the more consolidated bottom sediment is simulated provides an improvement in the simulation of the suspended solids concentration.  相似文献

In lake Marken (Markermeer), a shallow lake in the Netherlands, sediment transport and suspended solids concentration are dominated by wind induced resuspension of sediment. The suspended solids concentration in the lake determines the attenuation of light. A 2-dimensional sediment transport model, STRESS-2d, was used to estimate the special distribution of the silt content for periods with different wind conditions. The model was calibrated using measured values of the fall velocity distributions of sediment, freshly deposited material and suspended solids. The specific light attenuation coefficient of the various sediment classes was also measured and used in the light attenuation model, CLEAR, together with simulation results from the STRESS-2d model, to simulate the light attenuation variations in time and space. By comparison of the simulation results for different scenarios, the influence of regional planning features on the sediment balance and the light attenuation can quantified. A provisional example of this method is presented.  相似文献

To understand the effect of hydrodynamical process on water phosphorus concentration, wind, wave, and several water quality indices were observed in Meiliang Bay, a shallow and eutrophic bay locates in north of Lake Taihu. During the 7 day observation period, wind speed and significant wave height were recorded more than 3 h per day, and water samples were collected in five water-depth layers once a day. Hydrodynamical disturbance had no significant correlationship with the water quality at the top layer when the significant wave height was smaller than 30 cm, but it significantly increased suspended solids (SS) concentration of the bottom water layer. Concentrations of nutrients showed no positive correlationship with SS concentration in the water body. Intensive sediment resuspension may not have occurred when the hydrodynamic stress on sediment was only a little higher than the critical stress for sediment resuspension. A new method for confirming the critical stress for intensive sediment resuspension and nutrient release still needs to be developed. The range of the water quality indices was quite high during the seven days of observation. High variation seems to be a common character of large shallow lakes like Taihu.  相似文献

The observation that deposits of fine sediment are found on stream beds only in areas of slower water velocity promotes a common misunderstanding of the depositional behaviour of fine suspensoids in flowing water and a disregard for the potential for siltation effects on the biota on the surface of stones in fast flowing water. A model for deposition from turbulent water, whereby particles are lost from suspension where water currents are slowed by boundary friction, provides an explanation for silt infiltration into epilithic periphyton. Theoretically calculated deposition rates of clay sized mineral particles at low suspended concentrations (2 to 5 g m–3) were found to account for observed rates of silt accumulation in epilithic periphyton in a braided river in the South Island of New Zealand. At concentrations between 1 and 10 g m–3 of suspended mineral silt during normal flow, silt accumulation in epilithic periphyton accounted for about 50% of its dry weight. This caused a reduction in the mean organic content of the periphyton to 22% of the dry weight compared to 52% in a reference stream where the concentration of suspended mineral particles was less than 1.0 g m–3 during non-freshet flow. This reduction in proportional organic content is discussed in terms of diminished food value of the periphyton and potential interactions between periphyton and invertebrate consumers.  相似文献

Total oxygen deficit occurred regularly during stagnation periods in the deepest part of Lake Kallavesi in the period 1973–1986. The sediment was black and anaerobic during the first sampling in 1987. After beginning of artificial lake oxygenation and efficient purification of waste waters of a paper board mill in 1986 the oxygen deficit decreased gradually and a light brown oxidized uppermost sediment layer appeared and began to thicken. The following changes in the sediment composition were observed during 1987–1996: loss on ignition, total nitrogen and BOD7 concentrations decreased in the uppermost sediment layer (0–2 cm) and BOD7 concentration increased in the next sediment layer beneath (2–10 cm). There were no significant change in phosphorus and iron concentrations.Lake oxygen, total phosphorus and suspended solids concentrations fluctuated in a noticeable degree in Lake Huruslahti depending on waste water input and artificial oxygenation during the years 1980–1993. Oxygen condition was good at times of successful waste water elimination and lake oxygenation while deterioration of either resulted oxygen deficiency as well as increase of total phosphorus and suspended solids concentration. Most of the internal load entered with suspended solids during periods of total oxygen deficiency.An explanation for the findings in Lake Huruslahti could be microbiological. Gas formation inside sediment lift organic material towards top of the sediment and into the water, but after the lake recovery the material retain in the sediment. Also in Lake Kallavesi microbiological gas formation resuspended sediment particles with phosphorus into the overlaying water prior to oxygenation. During oxygenation microbiological processes in uppermost sediment utilize the anaerobic metabolic products, organic acids and methane, and block gas formation. Organic substances remain in the top sediment decomposing gradually in the uppermost layer.  相似文献

Diatoms are photosynthetic unicellular, eukaryotic, microorganisms (algae) that are distinguished by their silicified (SiO2‐nH2O) cell walls. They have often been employed to assess salinity, pH, and nutrient conditions. Our data suggest that, they may also be used to assess suspended solid levels in streams. The ratio of motile to attached benthic diatoms from five different stream sites in Hong Kong was correlated with the level of suspended solids for each of these sites. Sites with high concentrations of suspended solids had a high percentage of motile diatoms on their rocks while sites with low concentrations of suspended solids had a high percentage of attached (non‐motile) diatoms on their rocks. When water carried by a stream has a high concentration of suspended solids, benthic diatoms in the stream are often covered in a layer of silt. Those diatoms that are motile are able to get on top of this silt layer while attached diatoms cannot. If the silt layer is not washed away, the attached diatoms perish and the percentage of motile diatoms increases. Thus, streams with high concentrations of suspended solids display a higher proportion of motile diatoms than do clear water streams with low concentrations of suspended solids. 采用克隆培养法 (编制生命表 )和群体累积培养法 ,研究了长江口疏浚弃土悬沙对褶皱臂尾轮虫(Brachionusplicatilis)的影响 .实验设 0 (CK)、1、3、5、7、9mg·ml-16个悬沙梯度和 2 0、12× 10 6cells·ml-1两个饵料密度 .结果表明 ,克隆培养时 ,悬沙可使该轮虫种群的内禀增长率 (rm)下降 2 9.6 %~ 6 4 .1% ,最大降幅为 130 .0 % .悬沙对轮虫种群的存活率 (lx)有影响 ,而对种群的繁殖率 (mx)无显著影响 .群体累积培养时 ,悬沙对轮虫种群的雌体密度、雄体密度、孤雌生殖卵和休眠卵的密度以及种群的动态变化规律无显著影响 .可见 ,长江口疏浚工程会对轮虫动物有一定的负面影响  相似文献

Tilapia rendalli was exposed to various siltconcentrationsfor different exposure periods to determine LC50 andsublethalconcentration ranges. The extent of damaging effects, if any,ofsuspended silt on the exposed fish, were investigated by meansofscanning electron microscopy. The LC50 values rangedbetween21 to 24 g l1 and 42–48 g l1 for juveniles andadultsrespectively. The silt concentrations tolerated by the testfisheswere above those found in most natural waters. The resultstherefore support the hypothesis that suspended silt is lethaltofish at concentrations higher than those naturally observed insurface water. The observed mortalities can be attributed tothecombined physical effects of high silt concentrations andassociated reduction in dissolved oxygen levels. To preventfishmortalities and other impacts on biota, anthropogenicactivitiesthat affect the natural variation in suspended siltconcentrationsin surface water should be carefully monitored and, wherepossible,be restricted.  相似文献

Lake circulation and sediment transport in Lake Myvatn have been calculated using AQUASEA, a numerical model developed by Vatnaskil Consulting Engineers. The goal of the modelling was to calculate changes in sediment transport within the lake due to changes in lake bathymetry caused by diatomite mining. The model uses the Galerkin finite element method and consists of a hydrodynamic flow model and a transport-dispersion model. The flow model is based on the shallow water equations and the wave equation. The transport model is based on the conservation of mass for suspended sediment. The model was calibrated against measurements performed during the summer of 1992. These included measurements of water elevation, current velocity, wave height, and concentration of suspended sediment. After calibration, the model was run for different mining scenarios to determine their impact on the sediment transport in the lake.  相似文献

The trophic status and water quality of Lake Tilitso (4920 m above sea level) in a high altitude region in central Nepal were surveyed in September, 1984. The lake is rather large with a maximum depth of 95 m and a surface area of 10.2 km2. The lake water was turbid due to glacier silt and the euphotic layer was only 5 m deep. The nutrient concentration was very low with total phosphorus concentration 1–6 μg l−1, and DTN concentration 0.10–0.22 mg l−1. The phytoplankton biomass and chlorophyll-a concentration were also low. Primary production was estimated to be about 12 mg C m−2 d−1. The concentrations of particulate matter and most cations and bacterial number were higher in the epilimnion than in the hypolimnion. The trophic status of this lake was estimated as ultraoligotrophic.  相似文献

We examined sediment resuspension and light attenuation in relation to the potential for macrophytes to improve water quality conditions in Peoria Lake, Illinois (U.S.A.). The lake exhibited high total suspended solids (TSS) loading and retention of predominantly fine-grained particles in 2000. Large fetches along prevailing wind rose, coupled with shallow morphometry and sediment particles composed of >90% silt and clay resulted in frequent periods of sediment resuspension. As calculated (wave theory) shear stress increased above the critical shear stress (measured experimentally), turbidity increased substantially at a resuspension monitoring station. Resuspension model explorations suggested that establishment of submersed aquatic macrophytes could substantially reduce sediment resuspension in Peoria Lake. However, K d is currently very high, while Secchi transparency low, at in-lake stations. Thus, in order to establish a persistent macrophyte population in the lake to control resuspension, the underwater light regime will have to improve quite dramatically.  相似文献

A hydrodynamic model of the upper part of the Techa river was developed on the basis of the river valley geometry as well as data of hydrological conditions and of the granulometric composition of bottom sediments. The model describes the transport of radioactivity by suspended sediments with different granulometric compositions (clay, silt) in the early 1950s. It includes the stirring-up of bottom sediments and the precipitation of suspended sediments as a function of water discharge rate and water level in the investigated part of the river. The results allow to specify the development of the river system contamination as a result of inflow of suspended sediments contaminated with radionuclides. In the period of liquid radioactive waste (LRW) discharges, the water of the Techa river contained a large fraction of finely dispersed particles of less than 5 micro m diameter. At the site of LRW discharge 80% of the discharged activity was adsorbed to these particles. Depending on the water flow, 40-80% of the suspensions precipitated at the bottom of subsequent sedimentation reservoirs. A total of about 1.6 MCi adsorbed to the suspended particles entered the open hydrographic system of the Techa river. The conclusion that the largest part of the activity was adsorbed on the suspended particles contradicts the assumption in the Techa river dosimetry system, TRDS-2000, that most of the released activity entered the Techa river in soluble form. For a correct reconstruction of the doses received by the Techa river population it is, therefore, essential to consider hydrodynamic models that take into account the transport of radionuclides adsorbed on the suspended particles.  相似文献

The routine oxygen consumption of redbreast tilapia, Tilapia rendalli exposed to silt from the Phalaborwa Barrage was investigated under controlled laboratory conditions. Exposure of adult fish to sublethal concentrations of silt did alter routine oxygen consumption by causing increased rates (53–77% from initial) of oxygen consumption. This indicates that sublethal levels of suspended silt concentrations results in an increase in oxygen consumption by the fish due to an increase in metabolic rate associated with increased activity and stress. From the laboratory experiments, it can therefore be predicted that sublethal releases from the Phalaborwa Barrage will stress the resident fish populations. However, the extent of the impact on the fish population will depend on factors such as frequency, duration and severity of exposure as well as the species in question. Long term monitoring of the fish population below the Phalaborwa Barrage is therefore essential.  相似文献

Summary

Exposure of adult Oreochromismossambicusto sublethal concentrations (5 to 20 g silt ??1) of natural silt from the Phalaborwa Barrage altered routine oxygen consumption by causing increased rates of oxygen consumption. This indicates that sublethal levels of suspended silt result in a significant (p<0.05) increase in oxygen consumption by the exposed fish due to an increase in metabolic rate associated with increased activity and stress. Suspended particles are abiotic factors that can affect the abundance of cladocerans such as daphnids. Ultra-oligotrophic Lake Brienz, situated in the front ranges of the Swiss Alps, is dominated by two major inflows that annually transport over 300,000 tons of suspended glacial material into the lake. A laboratory flow-through experiment was performed to test whether these suspended particles have an influence on the fitness of Daphnia hyalina from Lake Brienz, measured as body size, fecundity and juvenile growth rate, especially when they are simultaneously exposed to low food concentrations. Our results show that the concentration of suspended particles present in Lake Brienz does not reduce the fitness of daphnids, even at very low food concentration. In fact, a low concentration of suspended particles increased the fitness. Reduction of fitness could only be observed at a suspended particle concentration of over 25 mg l−1, a level that has never been recorded in Lake Brienz. The contribution of erosion of bed sediment to the load of metals leaving Lake Ketelmeer, a shallow lake in the Netherlands fed by the IJssel branch of the River Rhine, is reported. Transport of suspended matter and associated trace metals was measured using both centrifuges and sediment traps at several locations in the lake. Mass balances of suspended matter and heavy metals were calculated using data from these field measurements.Metal/scandium-ratios were used to identify the source of the suspended matter in the lake. Since the bed sediment is more polluted than the suspended sediment entering the lake, higher metal/scandium-ratios were found for bottom sediment in the lake compared with those for suspended matter entering the lake from the River IJssel. Using the metal/scadium-ratio in suspended matter from the lake, it was calculated that bottom sediments made up 43% of the suspended matter leaving the lake. This implies an erosion flux of bottom sediment of 16 g m–2 d–1. For cadmium, mercury, chromium and zinc, this erosion process accounts for more than 50% of the pollutant load leaving Lake Ketelmeer and entering Lake IJsselmeer.  相似文献

The distribution of iron both in suspended sediment and in the water column has been studied during summer stratification in Lake Banyoles. In this lake, near bottom springs, a very fine material suspended sediment remains in suspension. Dissolved Fe2+ in interstitial water of this suspended sediment, is related to redox potential and to the bottom water inflow. In the water column, soluble iron is present in the hypolimnion of the six different basins forming Lake Banyoles. Under those conditions Fe2+ is partially removed by sulfide produced in the anoxic sediment. In addition, a peak of Fe2+ found at the density gradient level in basins C-III, C-IV and C-VI. A three compartment model on the dynamics of the processes involving iron in Lake Banyoles is proposed. The bottom springs supply oxygen to the anoxic hypolimnion affecting chemical processes of the iron cycle. The presence of phototrophic sulfur bacteria in the anoxic monimolimnion of basins C-III and C-IV can be related to the kinetics of Fe2+ and sulfide. In C-III sulfide concentration exceeds Fe2+ concentration whereas in C-IV sulfide is not detectable and iron reached values up to 60 mM. The presence of phototrophic sulfur bacteria in iron-containing environments with no detectable sulfide is explained by the ability of such microorganisms to use FeS as electron donor instead of H2S.  相似文献

The importance of photodegradation in surface litter decomposition has recently been recognized in arid and semi-arid terrestrial ecosystems, yet its importance in decomposing dense litter and the mechanisms through which it acts remain unclear. We investigated how ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure and litter position affected decomposition processes in a California annual grassland. In a split-plot design, we exposed Bromus diandrus litter to two levels of UV radiation (UV pass and UV block) at two aboveground locations (at the top, suspended above the litter layer, and at the bottom of the litter layer) for 1 year. We found that UV radiation increased the litter decay constant by 23% at the top location over 1 year, consistent with the occurrence of photodegradation. Surprisingly, UV radiation also increased the litter decay constant by 30% at the bottom location over 1 year. We speculate that photodegradation indirectly increased microbial decomposition through priming effects. Overall, litter in the top location had a 29% higher decay constant than litter in the bottom location. In terms of litter chemistry, exposure to UV radiation increased loss of hemicellulose by 26%, but not loss of lignin. Litter in the bottom location exhibited greater loss of the cell solubles fraction and greater nitrogen immobilization, but lower loss of hemicellulose than litter in the top location. Our results demonstrate that litter position significantly regulates the contribution of photodegradation to overall decomposition, both through direct (top location) and indirect (bottom location) effects. Therefore, better quantification of both direct and indirect effects of photodegradation can greatly improve understanding of biogeochemical cycling in grasslands.  相似文献
