Questions: What is the contribution of management continuity during the last 30–40 years to variation in species diversity and composition of a calcareous wooded meadow plant community? Is tree cover related to species diversity and composition of the herbaceous layer? What are the effects of local soil gradients on species diversity? Location: Laelatu calcareous wooded meadow, Western Estonian coastal zone. Methods: Plant community composition was assessed in 150 1 m × 1 m plots, located at 30 sites with known management history within Laelatu meadow (7 ha). Light and soil conditions and relative altitude were measured at each plot. DCA was used to analyse variation in species composition and general linear mixed models to analyse the effects of management and environmental parameters on diversity. Results: Management continuity was the primary determinant of plant community composition, followed by light conditions and soil parameters. Species richness, diversity and evenness are positively dependent on management continuity. Spatial autocorrelation is important as well. Diversity started to decline under the tree canopy where 50% or less irradiation reached the level of the herbaceous layer. We did not find significant effects of soil conditions on small‐scale diversity. Conclusions: Management continuity, together with the cover of the tree layer, are the most important determinants of diversity. Despite grassland stands with different management history are located side by side, the regeneration of diversity and composition of plant communities after restoring regular management practices is a slow process.  相似文献

Aim  To describe New Zealand's historical terrestrial biogeography and place this history in a wider Southern Hemisphere context.
Location  New Zealand.
Methods  The analysis is based primarily on literature on the distributions and relationships of New Zealand's terrestrial flora and fauna.
Results  New Zealand is shown to have a biota that has broad relationships, primarily around the cool Southern Hemisphere, as well as with New Caledonia to the north. There are hints of ancient Gondwanan taxa, although the long-argued predominance of taxa derived by vicariant processes, driven by plate tectonics and the fragmentation of Gondwana, is no longer accepted as a principal explanation of the biota's origins and relationships.
Main conclusions  Most of the terrestrial New Zealand flora and fauna has clearly arrived in New Zealand much more recently than the postulated separation of New Zealand from Gondwana, dated at c. 80 Ma. There is a view that New Zealand may have disappeared completely beneath the sea in the early Cenozoic, and acceptance of this would mean derivation of the entire biota by transoceanic dispersal. However, there are elements in the biota that seem to have broad distributions that date back to Gondwanan times, and also some that are thought unlikely to have been able to disperse to New Zealand across ocean gaps, especially freshwater organisms. Very strong connections to the biota of Australia, rather than to South America, are inconsistent with the timing of New Zealand's ancient and early separation from Gondwana and seem likely to have resulted from dispersal.  相似文献

Nearly 30% of emerging infectious disease events are caused by vector‐borne pathogens with wildlife origins. Their transmission involves a complex interplay among pathogens, arthropod vectors, the environment and host species, and they pose a risk for public health, livestock and wildlife species. Examining habitat associations of vector species known to transmit infectious diseases, and quantifying spatio‐temporal dynamics of mosquito vector communities is one aspect of the holistic One Health approach that is necessary to develop effective control measures. A survey was conducted from May to August, 2010 of the abundance and diversity of mosquito species occurring in the mixed‐grass prairie habitat of the Smoky Hills of Kansas. This region is an important breeding ground for North America's grassland nesting birds and, as such, it could represent an important habitat for the enzootic amplification cycle of avian malaria and infectious encephalitides, as well as spill‐over events to humans and livestock. A total of 11 species, belonging to the three genera Aedes, Anopheles, and Culex, was collected during this study. Aedes nigromaculis, Ae. sollicitans, Ae. taeniorhynchus, Culex salinarius, and Cx. tarsalis accounted for 98% of the collected species. Multiple linear regression models suggested that mosquito abundances in the grasslands of the central Great Plains were explained by meteorological and environmental variables. Temporal dynamics in mosquito abundances were well supported by models that included maximum and minimum temperature indices (adjusted R2= 0.73). Spatial dynamics of mosquito abundances were best explained by a model containing the following environmental variables (adjusted R2=0.37): ground curvature, topographic wetness index, distance to woodland, and distance to road. The mosquito species we detected are known vectors for infectious encephalitides, including West Nile virus. Understanding the microhabitat characteristics of these mosquito species in a grassland ecosystem will aid in the control and management of these disease vectors.  相似文献

Aim To examine the roles of physical and biotic environment, distance, direction and dispersal in determining the composition of plant communities at a regional scale. Location Grassland and shrubland at 266 sites in the mountains of southern South Island, New Zealand. Methods Species abundances of vascular plants, bryophytes and lichens were measured by height‐frequency. Predictors were soils, climate, mammal grazing, physical distance and direction between plots, and geological history represented by occurrence on the same or different mountain ranges. Relationships were evaluated with quadratic multiple regression and Mantel tests. Results Spatial autocorrelation was present for both vascular and lower plants. However, distance explained only a minor part of the variation. Distance relationships were anisotropic, with the vegetation differences being greatest in the direction of the prevailing south‐westerly wind. Even using all the environmental information, much of the species composition remained unexplained. For species presence, distance alone explained 7% of the variation, environment alone 25% and both together 28%. The abundance of species was even less predictable: distance 2%, environment 11% and both 12%. With vascular species, climate‐related factors contributed the most to prediction, especially altitude. Surprisingly, soil chemical factors were more important for lower plants that are not rooted in the substrate. Species likely to disperse further showed a tendency towards weaker distance differentiation. Vegetation composition seemed unrelated to contemporary grazing, although historical grazing/burning may have been causal. There was little evidence for a relationship of species composition with biogeographic/geological history. Main conclusions Difference in community composition in these grasslands is only weakly related to distance, and only half of the distance effect can be explained by the environmental factors measured. Dispersal and geological history do not seem to explain the discrepancy. Explicability of community differences was comparable to that in some previous case studies, although weaker than that in others, but all of the previous studies examined only part of the flora, such as ‘abundant trees’ or palms – none examined even all the vascular species. The species complement of a site seems more conservative than the abundance of the species, much of which was not explicable from current information and may reflect past management history.  相似文献

以祁连山高寒干旱退化草地披针叶黄华(Thermopsis lanceolate)群落为研究对象,采取野外调查取样和室内分析相结合的方法,对群落土壤种子库与地上植被的关系进行了对比研究。结果表明:地上植被物种共调查出15种,土壤种子库检测出植物18种,地上植被阿尔泰针茅(S.krylovii)、赖草(A.dasystachys)和扁穗冰草等可食草以及不食草披针叶黄华和阿尔泰狗哇花(H.altaicus)优势度明显,其它物种不明显;土壤种子库与地上植被物种组成的相似性程度较低;土壤种子库与地上植被中可食草的物种数多于不食草,土壤种子库的物种数均不小于地上植被中的物种数,地上植被中存在而未在土壤种子库中检测到的可食草物种有阿尔泰针茅和赖草,土壤种子库中存在而地上植被中未被发现的物种有早熟禾(P.annua)、灰绿藜(C.glaucum)、碱韭(A.polyrhizum)、酸模(R.patientia)、独行菜(L.apetalum)和秦艽(G.macrophylla);原生禾草物种在可食草功能群中生物量所占比例较低,毒杂草物种生物量所占比例增加显著,而土壤种子库的数量百分含量较低;可食草与不食草的生物量在植被梯度下的变化呈显著负相关(r=-0.940,P=0.018),而土壤种子库密度变化无相关性;可食草生物量变化与其土壤种子库密度变化不相关,不食草生物量变化与其土壤种子库密度的增加呈显著正相关(r=0.902,P=0.036)。  相似文献

This paper presents the stratigraphic record of Gymnodinium catenatum during the last ~ 500 years, in Pescadero Basin, southern Gulf of California. Our aim is to help clarify the relation between abundances of cysts of G. catenatum and regional changes in the sea surface temperature and nutrient availability at a decadal scale. The record was obtained from core samples of laminated sediments dated with 14C, representing conditions in the area from 1483 to 1967 (PCM99-74C-5) and from 1907 to 1994 (PCM00-61C-4). Samples were treated with normal palynological processing, without oxidation, and using Lycopodium spores for quantification. The palynological assemblages observed contain varied and abundant terrestrial and marine components. However, we focus on the abundance of G. catenatum, due to its toxicity and the resulting impact in the area. This species is currently common in the area, and according to our results has been present there since ~ 1483. Cysts of G. catenatum are generally abundant in the 20th century, with maximum concentrations observed from 1888 to 1920, and from 1945 to 1965, but they show a steady decrease in the latter part of the century (1965–1994). Before 1830, abundances of G. catenatum were low because of increased upwelling conditions, probably related to a higher variability of the winter sea surface temperatures in the area. Both our data in the 20th century and the actual reports in the area, indicate a close relation with sea surface temperature. From 1907 to 1994 cyst abundances seem to increase during cool La Niña conditions in the area, and decrease during warmer El Niño events. They also show an evident decrease in cyst abundance from 1970 to 1994, while the sea surface temperature in the area increased during the same period. This inverse relation is also indicated by the low abundances of G. catenatum observed during red tide events, combined with high sea surface temperatures in Mazatlan. Additionally, our results do not show any relation of G. catenatum blooms and anthropogenic activity in the area.  相似文献

The distribution pattern of Pseudo-nitzschia species, associated phytoplankton flora and its relationships with main environmental factors were studied for the first time in continental shelf surface waters of the Argentine Sea (Southwestern Atlantic Ocean, 38–55°S). Both qualitative and quantitative samples, collected during summer and fall 2003, were examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. Results indicated that the genus Pseudo-nitzschia has a wide distribution along the studied area. It was present at low densities, with infrequent peak abundances and appeared most frequently as a minor component of the diatom populations that typically develop on the continental shelf of the Argentine Sea. Moreover, phytoplankton communities were numerically dominated by unidentified phytoflagellates (≤5 μm) throughout almost all samples analyzed. Eight Pseudo-nitzschia species were identified in our study: P. australis, P. fraudulenta, P. heimii, P. lineola, P. pungens, P. cf. subcurvata, P. turgidula and P. turgiduloides. Of these, P. heimii, P. lineola and P. turgiduloides are new records for the Argentine Sea. Their presence in the area is attributable to the influence of southerly cold water masses. Spatial and temporal variations of the environmental parameters recorded in the study area generally determined the distribution of Pseudo-nitzschia species. P. pungens and P. australis were widely distributed and reached high densities, especially in waters with elevated temperatures and salinities (around 15 °C, 33.8 psu) and low nutrients concentrations. On the other hand, P. heimii, P. lineola, P. turgidula and P. turgiduloides showed a more restricted distribution, with lower densities in relatively cold, less saline (8 °C, 32.45 psu) and nutrient-rich waters. From the Pseudo-nitzschia species found throughout this survey, P. australis, P. fraudulenta, P. pungens and P. turgidula are known as domoic acid (DA) producers around the world, but there is little information on the potential toxicity of these species in Argentina.  相似文献

The breeding system of the European tussock grass Nardus stricta L. (Poaceae) was investigated with pollination experiments. Plants were sampled from two populations at Lake Pukaki, Canterbury, New Zealand, where the species is recognised as an alien invader. Bagging of flowers with king-sized cigarette paper and hand-pollination were used to test for three modes of reproduction in the greenhouse: (1) agamospermy (apomixis), (2) autogamy and self-compatibility, and (3) allogamy (outcrossing). Two control groups without experimental treatments were further tested for seed set under (1) greenhouse and (2) field conditions. The success or failure of all experimental treatments was assessed with seed set and germination trials. All agamospermy treatments showed high seed set and germination proportions arguing for an apomictic mode of reproduction in Nardus stricta. Cross-pollination treatments were also successful making it difficult to estimate the degree of outcrossing, selfing, and agamospermous seed production in Nardus stricta. Fecundity in field populations was considerably reduced, possibly due to environmental factors acting upon seed development during maturation. The reproductive strategy of Nardus stricta might be particularly beneficial during invasion because single tussocks can form reproducing colonies and high reproductive output is ensured even in the absence of pollination. Genetic studies in combination with pollination experiments would be necessary to gain deeper insights into the breeding strategy of Nardus stricta.  相似文献

Variability in timing of the reproductive stages of Scotch broom (Cytisus scoparius) may influence synchronization and establishment of the broom seed beetle (Bruchidius villosus), a biological control agent. A sampling scheme was devised to compare the phenologies of Scotch broom at different sites in the same season and in different seasons at the same site. The synchrony of the broom seed beetle's life stages with those of the host plant was also determined. The phenology of Scotch broom varied only slightly from season to season at Lincoln, but could vary considerably between sites in the same season. At both sites where it is established, the broom seed beetle was synchronized with its host; adult beetles were present throughout the flowering period. Eggs were found on suitable green pods. The broom seed beetle appears capable of adapting to the phenology of its host and has the potential to be an effective agent for Scotch broom. Variability in phenology of the reproductive stages of Scotch broom, even at nearby sites, must be taken into account by practitioners of biological control when releasing broom seed beetles and later when sampling beetles to determine establishment.  相似文献

种植苜蓿恢复模式在半干旱矿区植被恢复中占重要地位。为掌握其恢复过程中土壤颗粒分形的演变特征,选择恢复年限分别为2 a、4 a、6 a和10 a(M2、M4、M6和M10)的苜蓿种植地为研究对象,通过野外分层采样与室内测定,依据颗粒体积分形理论,研究了排土场苜蓿恢复过程中土壤颗粒分形的演变特征及与土壤特性的关系。结果表明:研究区土壤各粒径含量以砂粒为主,粉粒次之,粘粒最少;随着苜蓿恢复过程,粘粒与粉粒含量整体表现为先增加后下降的趋势,且在M4阶段达到最佳,砂粒反之。土壤分形维数变化在2.09—2.57,在苜蓿恢复过程中先增大后减小,在M4阶段达到最大。土壤分形维数与粘粒、粉粒具有极显著正相关性(P<0.01),与砂粒具有极显著负相关性(P<0.01);土壤分形维数与电导率呈极显著负相关关系(P<0.01),与pH值和速效钾含量呈显著负相关关系(P<0.05),与碱解氮含量呈显著正相关关系(P<0.05)。在半干旱矿区排土场采用苜蓿恢复模式,可用土壤分形维数表征土壤特性,应重视恢复年限的调控,适时进行适宜的利用与改造,确保矿区生态恢复的可持续性。  相似文献

Among the south Asian Sericini only a very few endemic monophyletic lineages developed in the lowland areas, such as the taxa belonging to Maladera (subgenus Cycloserica). Twenty species of Sericini (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) representing the principal lineages of Maladera occurring in the Palearctic region were included in a parsimony analysis based on 37 morphological characters. Maladera (Cycloserica) was found be monophyletic, composed by a clade comprising (Maladera caspia (Cycloserica excisipes, Leucoserica arenicola)) being distributed in the Middle Asian lowlands and its sister group the Maladera quinquidens-group with four endemic species in the Himalayan and North Indian lowlands. The ranges of these two clades as well as of the sister group of Cycloserica reveal a separating effect by the uplifted Himalayan–Alpine belt. It is hypothesized that these two Cycloserica lineages existed before they dispersed into the two separated areas, the northern Indian subcontinent (Himalayas) and the Middle Asian lowland. Due to the sister group relationship of Cycloserica and Leucoserica, both nested deeply within the species of Maladera, it seems reasonable to consider both synonymous with Maladera. Based on this conclusion one new combination is necessary, Maladera (Cycloserica) arenicola, and Leucoserica Reitter, 1896, is placed in synonymy with Cycloserica Reitter, 1896).  相似文献

The nasal roof cartilage of a neonate sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) was examined by gross dissection and routine histology. This cartilage is part of the embryonic Tectum nasi and is a critical feature in the formation of the massive sperm whale forehead. In neonates as well as in adults, the blade-like nasal roof cartilage extends diagonally through the huge nasal complex from the bony nares to the blowhole on the left side of the rostral apex of the head. It accompanies the left nasal passage along its entire length, which may reach several meters in adult males. The tissue of the nasal roof cartilage in the neonate whale shows an intermediate state of development. For example, in embryos and fetuses, the nasal roof cartilage consists of hyaline cartilage, but in adult sperm whales, it also includes elastic fibers. In our neonate sperm whale, the nasal roof cartilage already consisted of adult-like elastic cartilage. In addition, the active or growing, layer of the perichondrium was relatively thick compared to that of fetuses, and a large number of straight elastic fibers that were arranged perpendicularly to the long axis of the nasal roof cartilage were present. These neonatal features can be interpreted as characteristics of immature and growing cartilaginous tissue. An important function of the nasal roof cartilage may be the stabilization of the left nasal passage, which is embedded within the soft tissue of the nasal complex. The nasal roof cartilage with its elastic fibers may keep the nasal passage open and prevent its collapse from Bernoulli forces during inhalation. Additionally, the intrinsic tension of the massive nasal musculature may be a source of compression on the nasal roof cartilage and could explain its hyaline character in the adult. In our neonate specimen, in contrast, the cartilaginous rostrum (i.e., mesorostral cartilage) consisted of hyaline cartilage with an ample blood supply. The cartilaginous rostrum does not change its histological characteristics during development, but its function in adults is still not understood.  相似文献

A 3 year study (2000–2002) in Barnegat Bay-Little Egg Harbor (BB/LEH), New Jersey (USA), was conducted by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Division of Science Research and Technology (DSRT) in cooperation with several partners to assess brown tide blooms in coastal waters in NJ. Water samples were collected by boat and helicopter at coastal stations from 2000 to 2002 along with field measurements. Aureococcus anophagefferens were enumerated and associated environmental factors were analyzed. A. anophagefferens abundances were classified using the Brown Tide Bloom Index and mapped, along with salinity and temperature parameters, to their geo-referenced location using the ArcView GIS. The highest A. anophagefferens abundances (>106 cells ml−1), including category 3 blooms (≥200,000 cells ml−1) and category 2 blooms (≥35,000 to ≤200,000 cells ml−1), recurred during each of the 3 years of sampling and covered significant geographic areas of the estuary, especially in Little Egg Harbor. While category 3 blooms were generally associated with warmer water temperatures (>16 °C) and higher salinity (>25–26 ppt), these factors were not sufficient alone to explain the timing or distribution of A. anophagefferens blooms. There was no significant relationship between brown tide abundances and dissolved organic nitrogen measured in 2002 but this was consistent with other studies. Extended drought conditions, with corresponding low freshwater inputs and elevated bay water salinities, occurring during this time were conducive to blooms. A. anophagefferens abundances were well above the reported levels that have been reported to cause negative impacts on shellfish. It was shown that over 50% of the submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) habitat located in Barnegat Bay/Little Egg Harbor was categorized as having a high frequency of category 2 or 3 blooms for all 3 years.  相似文献

The Devonian Hunsrück Slate fossil Devonohexapodus bocksbergensis Haas, Waloszek & Hartenberger, 2003 has been interpreted as a stem-lineage representative of the Hexapoda, implying their marine origin and independent terrestrialisation within the ‘Atelocerata’. Devonohexapodus bocksbergensis was based on a single specimen embedded in a lateral position. Reinvestigation of that holotype and of all known specimens of the Hunsrück Slate arthropod Wingertshellicus backesi Briggs & Bartels, 2001 demonstrates that all this material represents a single species. The latter is redescribed, its taxonomic diagnosis is emended, and the name Devonohexapodus bocksbergensis is treated as a junior synonym of Wingertshellicus backesi. The phylogenetic position of W. backesi neither is that of a stem-lineage representative of Hexapoda, nor does it fall within the crown group Mandibulata. The Hunsrück Slate provides no evidence of an independent terrestrialisation within the ‘Atelocerata’ or of a marine origin of the Hexapoda.  相似文献

Long‐term social structure data on small delphinids is lacking for most species except the bottlenose dolphin. This study describes the long‐term social structure of one community of Atlantic spotted dolphins, Stenella frontalis, divided into three social clusters. Data from 12 yr were analyzed using SOCPROG 2.3. Coefficients of association (CoA) were calculated using the half‐weight index. The overall mean community CoA ranged from 0.09 to 0.12. Temporal analyses and mantel tests revealed significant differences between sex class associations due to high male‐male CoA (0.12–0.23) compared to female‐female and mixed sex CoA (0.08–0.10). Female associations were strongly influenced by reproductive status, calf care, and social familiarity, but not by age class. Male associations were strongly influenced by age, access to females, and alliance formation. Males showed two levels of alliance formation, long‐term first order pairs/trios (CoA 0.70–1.00) and shorter‐term second order alliances between two or more first order alliances (CoA 0.45–0.69), and a possible third level during interspecies interactions. Mating strategies, sex, and cluster formation shaped the social structure in this spotted dolphin community. Similar to many bottlenose dolphin studies, long‐term affiliations for spotted dolphins were correlated with age, sex, and reproductive status.  相似文献
