Abstract.  1. The abscission of seeds infested by insects is common in many plants and has been proposed as a defensive mechanism, although its negative consequences for insects have rarely been assessed.
2. We assessed the consequences of seed abscission studying the interactions between the holm oak Quercus ilex and the chestnut weevil Curculio elephas , its main pre-dispersal seed predator. Female weevils oviposit into the acorns and the larvae must complete their development inside a single acorn feeding on the cotyledons. The growth of the infested acorns is suppressed because they are prematurely abscised.
3. Female weevils oviposit along the acorn growing period; hence, the size of the infested acorns increased with date. The growth of the larvae inside the smaller, early infested, acorns was constrained because food (i.e. cotyledons) was frequently depleted. Larval size increased with the date along with the size of the infested acorns, but it declined slightly in the latest dates as a result of the higher conspecific competition provoked by the larger number of larvae per acorn.
4. The present results demonstrate that premature seed abscission by Q. ilex had negative consequences for C. elephas , as a smaller acorn size reduced food availability and constrained larval size, a key insect life history trait. At the same time, it is suggested that the growth suppression of infested acorns may condition the oviposition phenology of these insects according to their body size. These results need to be considered in further research in the context of the evolutionary significance of premature seed abscission as a defensive mechanism.  相似文献

辽东栎林(Q. liaotungensis)是北京东灵山地区典型地带植被。过去研究表明,鼠类对辽东栎更新有很大影响。本研究主要调查3个问题:(1)采食辽东栎坚果的鼠类种类;(2)将坚果埋藏于土中能否减少鼠类对坚果的采食,并提高出苗率?(3)地表植被是否影响辽东栎的出苗率?1996年9月在北京东灵山地区山地选取5个类型的样地37块,每样地在地表放置10粒坚果,检查地表种子消失率。使用木板夹来调查采食坚果的鼠类种类,诱饵分别为坚果和花生米。于1997年10月,选取5块样地,间隔25 m,每样地在1m2范围内埋50粒坚果,深度5 cm,次年5月调查出苗情况。研究结果表明,大林姬鼠、社鼠和黑线姬鼠为取食坚果的主要种类,取食比例与其丰富度有关。370粒坚果放在地表后,1d、10d、20d的消失率分别达15.1%、78.1%、和 100%。250粒坚果埋入土层后,出苗率达11.2%,苗平均高度为7.8cm,出苗率与地表植被盖度有一定负相关。本研究认为,人工埋藏植物种子可以减少鼠类捕食坚果,并能增加其出苗率。  相似文献

Perceived predation risk and competition for acorns are expected to affect scatter-hoarding decisions by Algerian mice (Mus spretus). We manipulated both factors by means of predator fecal scents and ungulate exclosures. We hypothesized that high-risk perception and ungulate presence would promote acorn dispersal. In the former case, it would stimulate acorn mobilization to safe microhabitats rather than in situ consumption. In the latter, increased competition for acorns would promote their storage for later consumption. We also expected that mice would adapt their foraging behavior to previous experience modulating the strength of these effects.In the presence of ungulates, mice focused their foraging activities on food acquisition at the expenses of vigilant behaviors. However, a more efficient foraging did not entail enhanced dispersal services. Lack of anti-predatory cover in tree surroundings may have deterred mice from transporting seeds outside canopies. Increased risk interacted with previous experience. In control trees (no predator odor), mice confidence increased throughout the night resulting in decreased vigilance and enhanced acorn mobilization rates. In contrast, in risky conditions (trees with predator odor) mice maintained a base-line vigilant behavior. Contrary to our expectations, increased risk did not result in higher acorn mobilization, but the opposite. Again, the scarcity of safe microhabitats for mobilization may have been the underlying cause of this behavior.Our results show that successful acorn dispersal depends, at least partly, on plant-animal relationships that are beyond the oak-rodent mutualism. Thus, any conservation policy aimed at restoring natural regeneration of oaks should take into account the interaction network in which oak-rodent encounters are embedded. In addition, they suggest that mice incorporate direct and indirect cues of risks (habitat structure) through recent experience. A better understanding of this process will improve our ability to incorporate such temporal and spatial variability in models of acorn dispersal.  相似文献

Since the XIX century, there is a controversy about the existence of biennial maturation of the acorns in Quercus suber L. While some authors recognised biennial cycles as an adaptation to habitats with short vegetative periods, other authors discarded the biennial pattern. Successive flowering events from spring to autumn and annual acorn ripening are proposed as an explanation of the multiple acorn crops typical of Iberian forests. To clarify this discussion, the presence of annual and biennial acorns was assessed in seven cork oak stands, covering a wide range of environmental conditions. In each stand, 100 individuals were sampled once in spring and once in autumn. Biennial acorns were observed with variable frequencies in all populations. There was a significant and positive relationship between latitude and the percentage of trees with biennial acorns within northern and central populations. On the contrary, this trend was not significant among southern populations. The hypothesis that the presence of biennial acorns in Quercus suber is related to individual female flowering phenology was confirmed in four populations located in the southwestern Iberian Peninsula. Unregarding local differences in the distribution of phenological stages anticipated trees bore significantly less biennial acorns than delayed individuals of the same stand. This result is coherent with the idea that the length of the vegetative period plays a crucial role in the frequency of annual and biennial acorn ripening patterns. The relationship between annual and biennial ripening cycles and the multiple acorn crops is discussed.  相似文献

森林鼠类的种子贮藏行为对植物的扩散和自然更新有着非常重要的影响。然而,鼠类是否具有鉴别虫蛀种子的能力还存在一定的争议。此外,鼠类的鉴别能力是否受到食物丰富度变化的影响也未见相关报道。采用标签标记法,2011年秋季(9—11月,食物丰富季节)和2012年春季(4—6月,食物匮乏季节)分别在秦岭南坡的佛坪国家级自然保护区内,调查了森林鼠类对完好和虫蛀锐齿槲栎(Quercus aliena)种子的选择差异。结果显示:1)在秋季,尽管2种类型种子的存留动态没有显著差异,但是在后期虫蛀种子的存留时间相对更长;而在春季2种类型种子的存留动态则极为显著,几乎所有的完好种子(99%)在释放后的第3天就被鼠类全部扩散,虫蛀种子的存留时间则相对较长。2)在秋季,鼠类更喜好扩散后取食完好种子;而在春季,鼠类则喜好在原地取食绝大部分的种子,并且优先取食完好种子。3)在秋季,鼠类贮藏了更多的完好种子;而在春季,尽管完好种子在释放后第1天便达到贮藏高峰,然而由于后期的大量被捕食,2种类型种子在贮藏动态上没有显示出显著差异。研究结果表明秦岭地区森林鼠类可以准确区分完好与虫蛀种子,但是食物丰富度会影响鼠类对种子的选择策略。在食物丰富的秋季,鼠类更多地选择贮藏完好种子;而在食物相对匮乏的春季,鼠类更倾向于同时取食2种类型种子。森林鼠类通过对2种类型种子的鉴别和选择,影响不同种子的命运,从而可能对种子的扩散和自然更新产生重要影响。  相似文献

Plants can enhance their seed viability and survival through reducing the fitness costs of herbivory by satiating seed predators at either plant or seed level, or both. The former satiates with production of large crops while the latter with large-sized seeds, enhancing the probability of seed survival. We analyzed both types of satiation in the interaction between the Quercus aliena and the weevil Curculio spp in 2 years with different crop size and acorn size. Larger crop size seemed to satiate less effectively weevils due to higher proportions of the seeds were attacked in oaks producing more crops of smaller acorns. However, prematurely abscission of infested acorns in large crop year might compensate this ineffectiveness. Larger acorns in lean year well satiated weevil larvae, as a larger acorn size increased the likelihood of embryo survival and seedling establishment. Although effective satiation by larger acorns would be negated by smaller seed crops, the proportion of attacked acorns that survived increased with large acorn size in lean year. These results highlighted the importance of annual variation in acorn size of Quercus aliena in satiating and defending weevil larval predations, consequently in successful seedling recruitment and establishment.  相似文献

Landscape characteristics and social behavior can affect the foraging patterns of seed-dependent animals. We examine the movement of acorns from valley oak (Quercus lobata) trees to granaries maintained by acorn woodpeckers (Melanerpes formicivorus) in two California oak savanna-woodlands differing in the distribution of Q. lobata within each site. In 2004, we sampled Q. lobata acorns from 16 granaries at Sedgwick Reserve in Santa Barbara County and 18 granaries at Hastings Reserve in Monterey County. Sedgwick has lower site-wide density of Q. lobata than Hastings as well as different frequencies of other Quercus species common to both sites. We found acorn woodpeckers foraged from fewer Q. lobata seed source trees (K(g) = 4.1 ± 0.5) at Sedgwick than at Hastings (K(g) = 7.6 ± 0.6) and from fewer effective seed sources (N(em)* = 2.00 and 5.78, respectively). The differences between sites are due to a greater number of incidental seed sources used per granary at Hastings than at Sedgwick. We also found very low levels of seed source sharing between adjacent granaries, indicating that territoriality is strong at both sites and that each social group forages on its own subset of trees. We discovered an interesting spatial pattern in the location of granaries. At Sedgwick, acorn woodpeckers situated their granaries within areas of higher-than-average tree density, while at Hastings, they placed them within areas of lower-than-average tree density, with the outcome that granaries at the two sites were located in areas of similar valley oak density. Our results illustrate that landscape characteristics might influence the number of trees visited by acorn woodpeckers and the locations of territories, while woodpecker social behavior, such as territoriality, shapes which trees are visited and whether they are shared with other social groups.  相似文献

A strong selection for acorn characteristics is expected to have evolved in the mutualistic relationship between the European jay (Garrulus glandarius) and the oak (Quercus spp.). Bossema's pioneer work suggested that jays do not select acorns randomly, but rather they preferentially select some size and species. Preference for some seeds over others may have implications on plant community dynamics by conferring advantages (or disadvantages) on the selected (avoided) seed characteristics. In this paper we test to what extent jays select acorns by species and/or by size and the relation between these two traits in Mediterranean oak species. The experiments consist of a set of field tests in which acorns from four different coexisting Mediterranean oak species (Quercus ilex, Quercus faginea, Quercus suber, and Quercus coccifera) were placed in artificial feeders accessible to wild jays. The acorns were previously measured to control individual acorn characteristics. Using video-recording techniques, we followed jay activity and the fate of each acorn (sequence of acorn selection and method of transport). Q. ilex acorns were preferred over other acorns, and Q. coccifera acorns were avoided when other acorns were available. Preference for Q. faginea and Q. suber acorns was intermediate, that is, they were preferred over Q. coccifera acorns but not over Q. ilex acorns. Large acorns were also preferred although acorn species selection was stronger than size selection. Jays selected species and size both by visual means and by using acorn area as an indicator of size. Acorns wider than 17–19 mm were carried in the bill because of throat limitation. Our results confirm Bossema's study on temperate oaks and extend it to Mediterranean oak species, revealing implications on mixed oak forest dynamics.  相似文献

In dry areas such as Mediterranean ecosystems, fluctuations in seed production are typically explained by resource (water) availability. However, acorn production in cork oak (Quercus suber) populations shows a very low relationship to weather. Because cork oak trees produce acorns with different maturation patterns (annual and biennial), we hypothesized that acorn production in coexisting individuals with a different dominant acorn maturation type should respond differently to climatic factors and that disaggregating the trees according to their acorn-maturation pattern should provide a more proximal relation to weather factors. We assessed acorn production variability in fragmented cork oak populations of the eastern Iberian Peninsula by counting the total number of acorns in 155 trees during an 8-year period. An initial assessment of acorn production variability in relation to weather parameters yielded very low explained variance (7%). However, after the trees were grouped according to their dominant acorn maturation pattern, weather parameters were found to account for 44% of the variability in acorn crops, with trees with annual acorns exhibiting mast fruiting in years with reduced spring frost and shorter summer droughts and trees with biennial acorns showing the opposite pattern. Thus, conditions that negatively affect annual production could be beneficial for biennial production (and vice versa). The results highlight the importance of the resource-matching hypothesis for explaining acorn production in Quercus suber and suggest that different seed maturation types within a population may allow the species to deal with highly variable weather conditions. They also emphasize the importance of understanding acorn maturation patterns for interpreting masting cycles.  相似文献

In order to evaluate the role of granivorous mice, Apodemus speciosus Temminck and Apodemus argenteus Temminck, in the regeneration of Pasania edulis (Makino) Makino, an evergreen tree, we conducted field studies examining acorn crops, the population dynamics and hoarding behavior of mice and pre- and postdispersal acorn predation in an evergreen broad-leaved forest dominated by P.edulis in Kagoshima, southern Japan. The study was conducted from 1994 to 2000. Apodemus mice selected sound acorns and hoarded them in the soil after transporting them for distances ranging from 5.4 to 19.9m. This behavior appeared to be beneficial to the establishment of seedlings of P.edulis. However, the positive effects were negated by a high rate of recovery of the acorns hoarded by the mice. A life-table analysis of five cohorts of P.edulis indicated that postdispersal predation of acorns by Apodemus mice was a major contributor to annual variation in the number of new seedlings. A considerable number of acorns germinated only in years with a good acorn crop and a low level of resident mice. These results suggest that Apodemus mice are serious acorn predators rather than important dispersers. After germination, acorns were attacked by the acorn borer at a high rate. From these results, we can conclude that acorn production probably makes a smaller contribution to the regeneration of P.edulis than coppice shoot production at the study site.  相似文献

1. The timing of reproduction is predicted to match the period of maximum food availability. In this sense, the case of many phytophagous insects in temperate regions is very illustrative, as their larvae usually depend on a resource only available for a limited period of time each year. 2. For 3 years the interactions between the weevil Curculio elephas and the Mediterranean Holm oak Quercus ilex were studied. Weevil larvae grow within the acorns, feeding on the cotyledons. The timing of oviposition will determine food availability for the larvae, as acorns stop growing once they are attacked. 3. Acorn temporal growing patterns did not change between years and food availability for larvae was at its highest in October, when temperature was still suitable for larval development. However, oviposition phenology did change between years. In 2002 females oviposited later, larvae grew within larger acorns, and their body mass was significantly higher than in 2003 or 2004, when females oviposited into early acorns. 4. Thus, weevils do not always adjust oviposition to the best possible feeding conditions for their offspring. Rather, they seem to maximise their own lifetime fitness, ovipositing as soon as they emerge in late summer. Emergence, in turn, depends strongly on stochastic events such as summer storms in the Mediterranean region. 5. Under a climate change perspective, the trend towards higher August rainfall recorded in our study area may alter oviposition phenology, with the subsequent cascade effects on weevil body size and fitness  相似文献

Many masting species switch resources between vegetative growth and reproduction in mast and non-mast years. Although masting of oak species is well known, there have been few investigations of the relationship between vegetative growth and reproduction based on long-term monitoring data, especially in evergreen oaks of subgenus Cyclobalanopsis. We investigated annual variations over 13?years in acorn and leaf production of three evergreen oak species in subgenus Cyclobalanopsis, genus Quercus (Fagaceae)??Q. acuta, Q. salicina and Q. sessilifolia??in western Japan. In these species, the maturation of acorns occurs in the second autumn after flowering, which is known as a biennial-fruiting habit. We found a pattern of acorn production and masting in alternate years that was synchronized in all three species. Masting was not correlated with temperature and precipitation. Annual leaf-fall also showed 2-year cycle in the three oak species; peak years were synchronized between species and peak leaf-fall alternated with acorn production in all three species. Furthermore, there was a significant negative correlation between acorn and leaf production in all three species. Data showing 2-year cycles of acorn and leaf production and the negative correlation between them supports the hypothesis of resource switching between vegetative growth and reproduction. The 2-year cycle might be the basic, intrinsic rhythm of resource allocation in biennial-fruiting Cyclobalanopsis species.  相似文献

Land‐use changes are expected to affect plant–disperser conditional mutualisms through changes in animal behavior. We analyzed the oak–rodent conditional mutualism in Mediterranean fragmented forests at two climatically different locations. We quantified fragmentation effects on seed dispersal effectiveness and assessed if such effects were due to changes in habitat structure and intraspecific competition for acorns in fragmented areas. Fragmentation decreased cover from predators within mouse territories as well as intraspecific competition for acorns. This resulted in lower dispersal effectiveness in small forest fragments. Globally, habitat structure was the main driver in mouse foraging decisions. In small fragments, low shelter availability precluded mouse movements, leading to short mobilization distances and low caching rates. However, as the proportion of cover from predators increased, mice were able to modulate their foraging decisions depending on intraspecific competition for acorns, resulting in higher dispersal quality. In addition to fragmentation effects, delayed breeding in the southern locality caused lower number of rodents during the dispersal season, which reduced acorn mobilization rates. Our study shows that seed dispersal patterns in managed systems can be analyzed as the result of management effects on key environmental factors in dispersers’ foraging decisions.  相似文献

Northern Gulf of Mexico (NGoM) loggerheads (Caretta caretta) make up one of the smallest subpopulations of this threatened species and have declining nest numbers. We used satellite telemetry and a switching state-space model to identify distinct foraging areas used by 59 NGoM loggerheads tagged during 2010–2013. We tagged turtles after nesting at three sites, 1 in Alabama (Gulf Shores; n = 37) and 2 in Florida (St. Joseph Peninsula; n = 20 and Eglin Air Force Base; n = 2). Peak migration time was 22 July to 9 August during which >40% of turtles were in migration mode; the mean post-nesting migration period was 23.0 d (±13.8 d SD). After displacement from nesting beaches, 44 turtles traveled to foraging sites where they remained resident throughout tracking durations. Selected foraging locations were variable distances from tagging sites, and in 5 geographic regions; no turtles selected foraging sites outside the Gulf of Mexico (GoM). Foraging sites delineated using 50% kernel density estimation were located a mean distance of 47.6 km from land and in water with mean depth of −32.5 m; other foraging sites, delineated using minimum convex polygons, were located a mean distance of 43.0 km from land and in water with a mean depth of −24.9 m. Foraging sites overlapped with known trawling activities, oil and gas extraction activities, and the footprint of surface oiling during the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill (n = 10). Our results highlight the year-round use of habitats in the GoM by loggerheads that nest in the NGoM. Our findings indicate that protection of females in this subpopulation requires both international collaborations and management of threats that spatially overlap with distinct foraging habitats.  相似文献

The stoichiometric composition of plant reproductive organs varies with environmental conditions at a large geographical scale, which has potentially important consequences both for plant reproductive success and for the nutrition of consumers. In the study reported here, we investigated variations in the concentrations of macronutrients in acorns of the oriental oak (Quercus variabilis) in relation to environmental variables across a geographic gradient spanning temperate and subtropical latitudes. Across this gradient, nitrogen (N) and calcium (Ca) concentrations of the acorns had higher coefficients of variance (CV 18?C23?%) than the other elements (CV 8?C14?%). With increasing latitude (LAT), acorn N, potassium (K), and magnesium (Mg) concentrations increased, whereas those of sulfur (S) and Ca and the carbon:nitrogen (C:N) and S:N ratios decreased. The K and Mg concentrations of the acorns were positively correlated with the concentrations of these elements in the soil, whereas N and Ca concentrations were inversely correlated with soil concentrations. The C:N:P (phosphorus) molar ratio of the acorns was 1,008:17:1. A low temperature and short growing season stimulated seeds to accumulate more macronutrient elements in the north to ensure reproductive success, while high soil Ca in the north led plants to allocate less Ca to their acorns. The pattern of variation in acorn stoichiometric traits along LAT may be the result of interacting effects of plant reproduction strategy and environmental factors. Our results can help improve our understanding of the effects of global changes on the chemical compositions of plant reproductive organs and advance our knowledge of global patterns of ecological stoichiometry in reproductive organs.  相似文献

Wood mice Apodemus sylvaticus are the main dispersers of acorns in highly managed Mediterranean holm‐oak woodlands. Mice mobilize and cache acorns to store them for winter consumption. They carry acorns away from potential competitors, face predation risks during mobilization, and cache acorns in areas where pilfering risks are low. However, mice can act either as net predators or as moderately efficient dispersers, depending on the way landscape management affects intraspecific competition for acorns and shelter availability. To assess the influence of landscape structure and mouse behavior on acorn dispersal, we developed an agent‐based model (ABM) that translates forest management into changes in key environmental factors driving mouse foraging decisions. The model was able to predict accurately acorn dispersal patterns in a wide range of forest management practices based on information on forest habitat availability, stem density and shrub cover. Sensitivity analysis revealed that caching rates emerged from the interplay between intraspecific competition for seeds and predation risk accepted during mobilization. It also showed that intraspecific competition for acorns decreased with increasing habitat loss (due to positive edge effects on acorn production) while landscape resistance to mouse movements increased. As a result, the net benefits of caching declined and acorn predation became the dominant strategy. Finally, we assessed the effects of shrub encroachment as a management practice to enhance dispersal services in savanna‐like landscapes (dehesas). The model predicted non‐linear responses with a 65% threshold of shrub cover needed to achieve relatively high levels of acorn dispersal. This value may not be compatible with the traditional exploitation of dehesas (livestock rearing). Our study shows that integrated approaches that combine environmental change driven by management with behavioral responses of dispersers improve our understanding of the causes of recruitment bottlenecks, and are useful tools for evaluating conservation strategies aimed at enhancing dispersal services.  相似文献

We investigated why some mature females of New?Zealand?s critically endangered parrot, the kakapo (Strigops habroptilus), did not attempt to breed during the 2005 breeding season on Codfish Island. At a population level, the initiation of kakapo breeding appears to correspond with years of mast fruiting of rimu (Dacrydium cupressinum) trees, with the proportion of females that breed each season dependent on the quantity of rimu fruit available. This research investigates possible links between habitat quality within individual home ranges and the breeding status of adult females during 2005, when the abundance of available rimu fruit was low. We assessed the importance of both home range size and habitat characteristics in determining breeding attempts. Foraging home ranges were characterised using radio-tracking and triangulation techniques. The relative importance of habitat variables in optimal breeding habitat was assessed using ecological niche factor analysis. Our results show that female kakapo breeding in 2005 had, on average, home ranges twice the size of those females that did not breed that season and the ranges contained a significantly greater quantity of mature rimu forest. Multivariate analysis illustrates female kakapo were effectively partitioning available habitat, as breeders? foraging locations were positively correlated with high-abundance rimu forest with a tall canopy, described as optimal breeding habitat. In contrast non-breeders? locations were weakly correlated with short forest containing little or no mature rimu forest. To maximise reproductive output each breeding season, conservation managers need to ensure that all breeding-aged females occupy optimal breeding habitat on Codfish Island. Removal to other islands of kakapo not required in the breeding population may enable females to increase their home range size and occupy better breeding habitat.  相似文献
