In highly mobile animals post-settlement dispersion of juveniles can strongly influence the observed patterns of abundance and distribution. To explore the relative importance of factors regulating the use of habitat by crabs we performed a multi-species manipulative experiment in a subtidal environment of the central Chilean coast. First, demographic patterns were established by performing a year-round crab survey in three discrete and well-known subtidal crab habitats: (1) algal turf, (2) cobbles and (3) shell hash. Second, habitat preferences were experimentally evaluated using concrete trays that were filled with different substrate types that simulate natural habitats. Settlement and recruitment rates were estimated from experimental trays that were left in the field and surveyed after 2 weeks (complete experiment was repeated 7 times throughout 1 year). Third, mortality, due to predation, was assessed by covering 50% of the trays with a 4-mm mesh-size screen that excluded large predators (i.e., fishes, shrimps). Fourth, habitat colonization rates were evaluated by quantifying the arrival, into open trays, of large juveniles (secondary dispersal). The most abundant species in this system (Paraxhantus barbiger, Cancer setosus, Taliepus dentatus and Pilumnoides perlatus) displayed clear habitat preferences at the time of settlement, evidenced by differences in density of recruits among habitats. Recruitment regulation by predation seemed to explain the observed patterns in only one case. For most species, however, evidence of ontogenetic change in the use of habitat, through active habitat redistribution by large juveniles, was detected. Thus, secondary dispersal among habitats seems to outweigh the influence of megalopae's habitat selection and post-settlement mortality as responsible for the observed demographic patterns.  相似文献

Palaearctic migrant passerines and near-passerines which visit eastern Africa can be divided into six groups based on the latitude of their final wintering area. Species wintering further north in Africa tend (a) to breed in more southern parts of the Palaearctic, (b) to prefer drier habitats and (c) to feed more from the ground than those wintering further south. Many species use quite narrow passage routes through eastern Africa and, for some species, passage is centred further east in spring than in autumn. Southward migration can take more than 4 months from the Palaearctic breeding grounds and many birds stopover in the northern tropics from September to November. By contrast, the return migration takes only about 6 weeks. The timing and strategy of migration within Africa can be broadly related to seasonal patterns of rainfall and vegetation.  相似文献

We censused pond-breeding hylid frogs in northeastern Costa Rica weekly for 15 months to deseribe patterns of reproduction, habitat use, and to establish baseline data on relative abundance for members of the assemblage. Reproduction in the Costa Rican assemblage was seasonal and occurred only during wet months. Some species called, but none reproduced, during the dry season. Three species (Agalychnis callidryas, Hyla ebraccata, and Scinax elaeochroa) accounted for more than 75% of the observations made during the study. The species overlapped broadly in time and space, but differed in substrate use and phenology. Two species of leaf-breeding frogs (A. callidryas and A. saltator) used perches that were significantly higher than those used by the other species. Some phenological differences were associated with different mating strategies. Explosive breeders (Scinax elaeochroa and Smilisca baudinii) were most common early in the wet seasons. Prolonged breeders (A. callidryas and H. ebraccata) were the most persistent members of this assemblage. Predation affects early and late life history stages of these hylids. Predation on arboreal egg masses by two snake species was observed. Ctenid spiders preyed on recently metamorphosed frogs and small adults. Our weekly samples were pooled into 21-day periods so that we could compare our results with those obtained for two communities of breeding anurans from South America. The patterns observed in the Costa Rican assemblage differed from those reported for South American pond-breeding frogs, but in all three assemblages reproduction was associated with wet periods.  相似文献

Passerines are especially vulnerable to predation at the pre-independence stage. Although the role of nest success in British farmland passerine declines is contentious, improvement in nest success through sympathetic management could play a role in their reversal. Because habitat is known to interact with predation, management options for mitigation will need to consider effects of nest predation. We present results from an observational study of a population of Common Blackbird Turdus merula on a farm which has experienced a range of agri-environment and game-management options, including a period with nest predator control, as a case study to address some of these issues. We used an information theoretic model comparison procedure to look for evidence of interactions between habitat and nest predation, and then asked whether habitat management and nest predator abundances could explain population trends at the site through their effects on nest success. Interactions were detected between measures of predator abundance and habitat variables, and these varied with nest stage – habitat within the vicinity of the nest appeared to be important at the egg stage, and nest-placement characteristics were important at the nestling stage. Although predator control appeared to have a positive influence on Blackbird breeding population size, the non-experimental set-up meant we could not eliminate other potential explanations. Variation in breeding population size did not appear to be influenced by variation in nest success alone. Our study demonstrates that observational data can only go so far in detection of such effects, and we discuss how it might be taken further. Agri-environment and game-management techniques are likely to influence nest predation pressure on farmland passerines, but the patterns, mechanisms and importance to population processes remain not wholly understood.  相似文献

To contribute to the poorly known ecology of Palearctic immigrant waders in East Africa, we studied the foraging system (roosting and foraging behaviours, 24‐h activity rhythm, time‐activity budget and habitat use) of eleven wader species overwintering on the Kenyan coast. The waders congregated in communal roosts and completely overlapped in their foraging rhythms, which in this tidal environment were completely determined by tides, and which were independent of the dark/light cycle. All species, both tactile and visual foragers, fed both by day and by night. This study, along with similar findings for other areas of the Palaeotropics, shows that wader activity throughout the 24‐h day is essentially uniform, and is only slightly influenced by the dark/light cycle, but is modified by tidal levels. The total time devoted to feeding by each wader species was related to their body mass. Each species used a specific micro‐habitat for foraging.  相似文献

Capsule: Wintering male Bull-headed Shrikes Lanius buchepalus preferred vegetable fields with perch sites to search for and detect terrestrial prey, and males occupying territories with large areas of vegetable fields acquired more prey and cached more food.

Aims: To better understand effects of habitat use on food acquisition and food caching of the Bull-headed Shrike, we investigated relationships between habitat quality (measured through foraging-site selection and foraging success) and food caching during the non-breeding season.

Methods: We monitored 66 territorial male shrikes during the non-breeding season from 2014 to 2016, and collected data on foraging-site selection, foraging success, and food caching.

Results: Our field observations showed that male shrikes preferred to forage over vegetable fields and that males occupying territories incorporating large areas of that habitat were able to acquire more food items and store more food caches in their territories during the nonbreeding season.

Conclusion: We suggest that for male Bull-headed Shrikes, a winter-breeding food-storing passerine, the quality of habitat in the nonbreeding season has the potential to affect their subsequent fitness.  相似文献

In human-altered environments, organisms may preferentially settle in poor-quality habitats where fitness returns are lower relative to available higher-quality habitats. Such ecological trapping is due to a mismatch between the cues used during habitat selection and the habitat quality. Maladaptive settlement decisions may occur when organisms are time-constrained and have to rapidly evaluate habitat quality based on incomplete knowledge of the resources and conditions that will be available later in the season. During a three-year study, we examined settlement decision-making in the long-distance migratory, open-habitat bird, the Red-backed shrike (Lanius collurio), as a response to recent land-use changes. In Northwest Europe, the shrikes typically breed in open areas under a management regime of extensive farming. In recent decades, Spruce forests have been increasingly managed with large-size cutblocks in even-aged plantations, thereby producing early-successional vegetation areas that are also colonised by the species. Farmland and open areas in forests create mosaics of two different types of habitats that are now occupied by the shrikes. We examined redundant measures of habitat preference (order of settlement after migration and distribution of dominant individuals) and several reproductive performance parameters in both habitat types to investigate whether habitat preference is in line with habitat quality. Territorial males exhibited a clear preference for the recently created open areas in forests with higher-quality males settling in this habitat type earlier. Reproductive performance was, however, higher in farmland, with higher nest success, offspring quantity, and quality compared to open areas in forests. The results showed strong among-year consistency and we can therefore exclude a transient situation. This study demonstrates a case of maladaptive habitat selection in a farmland bird expanding its breeding range to human-created open habitats in plantations. We discuss the reasons that could explain this decision-making and the possible consequences for the population dynamics and persistence.  相似文献

We assessed the lizard assemblage from a priority conservation Caatinga area from northeastern Brazil, through a pluriannual ecological approach, to expand the understanding on biodiversity patterns of Neotropical semiarid habitats. The studied area presented one of the richest lizard faunas among Caatinga sites, being composed primarily by species typical from open landscapes. The local species composition was more similar to assemblages from adjacent Caatinga ecoregions than to those from other areas within the same ecoregion. The inventoried lizard assemblage consisted of a few common species and a majority of low abundance ones, and its overall richness and abundance did not differ between rainy and dry months. Our findings demonstrated that the composition of lizard assemblages did not match with the current proposed Caatinga ecoregions, and revealed that the studied assemblage followed a lognormal species-abundance distribution, showing no significant seasonal fluctuation in richness and abundance.  相似文献

We examined microhabitat use among fishes in a 37-m section of Coweeta Creek, North Carolina. Numerical abundances of species changed substantially during the 17-month study period. Microhabitat availability, however, did not change markedly during our investigation. Seasonal principal component analyses of microhabitat availability and fish microhabitat use data extracted two main patterns of non-random microhabitat use. Clinostomus funduloides, Notropis eoccogenis and Semotilus atromaculatm were significantly over-represented in deep areas with low to intermediate velocities and depositional substrata. Campostoma oligolepis, Coitus bairdi, Etheostoma blennioides, Rhinichthys cataractae and Salmo gairdneri all occurred in intermediate to deep microhabitats with moderate to high velocities and erosional substrata. Five of seven species exhibited seasonal variation in microhabitat utilization, whereas six species displayed size-related variation in use. Size-related variation was probably ontogenetic. We attributed most seasonal changes in microhabitat use to variations in microhabitat availability.
We used canonical analysis of discriminants to identify factors maximizing interspecific differences in microhabitat use. This analysis indicated that species could be assigned to either a benthic or a water column guild. Species within a guild generally could not be differentiated statistically, whereas members of different guilds were readily separable. These patterns persisted throughout the study, despite changes in numerical abundances of assemblage members. There was no evidence of either exploitation or interference competition for microhabitat, consequently it is unlikely that spatial resources were limiting during our study.  相似文献

Horizontal gradients in fish assemblage structures in and around a seagrass habitat were evaluated by visual observations. The assemblage structures clearly differed between open microhabitats lacking seagrass, i.e., nearby sand and the area adjoining the outer margin of the seagrass bed (referred to as “outer gap”), and microhabitats with seagrass within the overall seagrass bed, although not differing among the latter microhabitats, including both edge and core portions. Such open microhabitats were found to be not always inferior, but nearly equal to or even sometimes greatly superior in fish species’ diversity and/or abundance to the microhabitats with seagrass. In particular, the outer gap was always ranked first in total species’ number and had outstanding abundance in spring. Similar open microhabitats adjoining seagrass walls facing the sand patch within the seagrass bed (referred to as “inner gap”) in spring were also characterized by higher fish species and individual numbers. The 11 most abundant fishes showed four discrete distribution patterns (three recognized herein and one implied by precedent studies), such contributing to a horizontal gradient in the fish assemblage structure. While no fishes showed a preference for the edge or core of the seagrass bed, group-forming juveniles of several species favored gap microhabitats, suggesting that, in addition to the traditionally recognized edge and core microhabitats, the concept of gap microhabitats should be included in seagrass conservation ecology.  相似文献

Summary We examined microhabitat use in Barbus graellsii, Barbus haasi, Chondrostoma toxostoma, Rutilus arcasii, and Salmo gairdneri over a 19 month period in the upper Rio Matarraña, Spain. B. graellsii and Ch. toxostoma exhibited non-random microhabitat use during all seasons and preferentially occupied deep microhabitats with heterogeneous substrates. During the majority of seasons in which they were present, B. haasi and R. arcasii occurred in microhabitats similar to those occupied by B. graellsii and Ch. toxostoma. S. gairdneri was over-represented in high velocity microhabitats with erosional substrates. We did not observe any evidence of interspecific interference competition or avoidance. Substrate composition did not appear to affect microhabitat use outside of its covariation with depth and velocity. Seaonal variation in microhabitat use by B. graellsii, B. haasi and Ch. toxostoma was strongly correlated with seasonal changes in microhabitat availability. S. gairdneri, however, occurred closer to the substrate when average velocities were high. Larger B. graellsii and B. haasi sometimes occupied deeper, higher velocity microhabitats than did smaller specimens. Larger B. graellsii also occasionally occurred farther from shelter than did smaller specimens; the reverse was true for B. haasi. Larger Ch. toxostoma sometimes were found farther from both the substrate and shelter than smaller individuals, whereas smaller specimens occasionally inhabited deeper areas with more depositional substrates than did larger Ch. toxostoma. During Late Summer 1985, smaller Ch. toxostoma also occupied microhabitats with higher velocities than did larger specimens. A comparison of microhabitat use for two species present in both upper and lower portions of the Matarraña indicated that most differences in microhabitat use could be attributed to inter-site differences in microhabitat availability. The data suggest, hovever, that both species shifted to more protected microhabitats in the higher velocity site. Assemblage members generally occupied statistically distinguishable microhabitats and could be classified as: 1) high-velocity upper water column (S. gairdneri), 2) low velocity lower water column (B. graellsii, Ch. toxostoma and R. arcasii), and 3) shelter-oriented benthic (B. haasi). The introduction of S. gairdneri during Winter 1984 did not produce microhabitat shifts in any of the native species. Whether or not the native species affected microhabitat use in S. gairdneri is unknown. Interspecific competition for space, however, did not appear to strongly influence microhabitat use among the native species.  相似文献

The identification of environmental factors linked to increased risk of local extinction often relies on inference from patterns of distribution. Yet for declining populations, the assumption of population equilibrium that underlies species distribution models is violated. Measures such as individual condition can provide a more direct indication of extinction risk, and can start to be detected before declines commence. We compared distribution-based and condition-based approaches to identifying factors affecting habitat suitability for an area-sensitive passerine, the eastern yellow robin Eopsaltria australis, in eastern Australia. We compared patterns of individual condition between robins and several common, more mobile species (Meliphagid honeyeaters and yellow thornbills Acanthiza nana). Robin presence was not affected by landscape context, but robins avoided sites with a more grassy ground layer. However, robins inhabiting landscapes with less remnant woodland had higher ratios of heterophils to lymphocytes in peripheral blood, indicating higher long-term stress. No clear spatial patterns of condition were detected for the more mobile species. Our findings suggest a hierarchical model of habitat suitability, whereby robins avoid grassy sites, but where they do occur are in poorest condition when inhabiting less-vegetated landscapes. We predict greater rates of local extinction of robins from such landscapes. The use of indicators of individual condition, in addition to distribution data, can unveil otherwise cryptic factors as important influences on habitat quality. As habitat occupancy does not always reflect habitat quality, exploring patterns in condition indices can complement species distribution modelling, potentially revealing threats to persistence before population declines have commenced.  相似文献

Common reed is increasingly harvested from the Mediterranean region toprovide thatching material to north European countries. The impact of thesemanagement practices on the fauna is poorly known. The aim of this study was toquantify the effect of reed cutting in the Mediterranean region through acomparative analysis of water regime, vegetation structure, arthropoddistribution and passerine assemblage at cut and uncut reedbeds in southernFrance. Cut reedbeds were characterised by a lower salinity, higher water levelin spring, and higher reed biomass than uncut reedbeds. Arthropod distributiondiffered consistently between cut and uncut sites, leading to a higher index offood available to passerines in cut reedbeds. Cut reedbeds had a similar birdspecies richness but a lower bird abundance, due to the significant decrease inMoustached Warblers and Bearded Tits at cut sites. The mild Mediterranean winterfavoured early growth of reed in spring, making harvested reedbeds suitable forbreeding of long-distance migrants such as the Great Reed Warbler and ReedWarbler. However, for the resident species that breed earlier in the season, cutreedbeds presumably lack sufficient vegetation cover to provide adequate nestingand feeding sites. Although biennial cutting (double wale) is considered as agood compromise between conservation and commercial interests in the UK, thejuxtaposition of annually cut and never cut reed patches appears as the onlysustainable alternative for the Mediterranean region. We further hypothesisethat an optimal mosaic design of cut/uncut reed patches could provide as high aconservation value as unmanaged reedbeds.  相似文献

We analyzed the carbon and nitrogen isotopic values of the muscle, liver, and crop contents (“diet”) of 132 individuals of 16 species of Chilean birds. The nitrogen content of diet was tightly correlated with the fraction of gut contents represented by insects relative to plant material. The carbon and nitrogen isotopic values of diet, liver, and muscle were all linearly correlated, implying high temporal consistency in the isotopic value of the diet of these birds. However, δ15N was not significantly related with the percentage of insects in diet. These results cast doubt on the applicability of the use of 15N enrichment to diagnose trophic level in, at least some, terrestrial ecosystems. However, the residuals of the relationship relating the isotopic value of bird tissues with those of their diet were weakly negatively correlated with insect intake. We hypothesize that this negative correlation stems from the higher quality of protein found in insects relative to that of plant materials. Finally, our data corroborated a perplexing and controversial negative relationship between tissue to diet isotopic discrimination and the isotopic value of diet. We suggest that this relationship is an example of the commonly observed regression to the mean effect that plagues many scientific studies.  相似文献

Understanding the influence of intrinsic (genetic and morphological) and extrinsic (geographical, environmental and social) factors on the performance and spatial differentiation of sexual signals, such as bird song, can help identify behavioural indicators of individual quality, habitat degradation and social environment. We used the Iberian Bluethroat Luscinia svecica azuricollis, a migratory bird that breeds in fragmented landscapes dominated by shrublands, as a case study to: (1) assess how a set of acoustic indicators of song performance are driven by intrinsic and extrinsic factors; and (2) contrast deterministic (adaptations to the environmental context and morphological constraints) vs. stochastic (differentiation by geographical isolation) explanations for song differentiation patterns. We explored acoustic indicators of song performance (spectral, temporal and song complexity) in relation to parameters related to genetic structure, body size, habitat type, habitat quality (assessed through a spatially explicit modelling approach) and social context (population abundance and songbird community composition). Then, we explored the contribution of genetic, geographical and environmental dissimilarity to song diversification across space. Our results highlight an association of song spectral variables with genetic structure and a significant connection between song complexity and duration with habitat quality. We found no relationship between social features and acoustic variables, or between song differentiation and genetic or geographical distances. There was, however, a correlation between song differentiation and environmental dissimilarity. We recommend the consideration of song complexity as an indicator of habitat quality.  相似文献

Recent population declines of seed-eating farmland birds have been associated with reduced overwinter survival due to reductions in food supply. An important component of predicting how food shortages will affect animal populations is to measure the functional response, i.e. the relationship between food density and feeding rate, over the range of environmental conditions experienced by foraging animals. Crop stubble fields are an important foraging habitat for many species of seed-eating farmland bird. However, some important questions remain regarding farmland bird foraging behaviour in this habitat, and in particular the effect of stubble on farmland bird functional responses is unknown. We measured the functional responses of a seed-eating passerine, the Chaffinch Fringilla coelebs , consuming seeds placed on the substrate surface in three different treatments: bare soil, low density stubble and high density stubble. Stubble presence significantly reduced feeding rates, but there was no significant difference between the two stubble treatments. Stubble reduced feeding rates by reducing the maximum attack distance, i.e. the distance over which an individual food item is targeted and consumed. The searching speed, handling time per seed, proportion of time spent vigilant, duration of vigilance bouts and duration of head-down search periods were unaffected by the presence of stubble. The frequency of vigilance bouts was higher in the bare soil treatment, but this is likely to be a consequence of the increased feeding rate. We show the influence of a key habitat type on the functional response of a seed-eating passerine, and discuss the consequences of this for farmland bird conservation.  相似文献

Summary Island size, habitat heterogeneity, and distance from major (mainland) stands of habitat were examined relative to composition and number of coexisting reptile species dependent on upland habitats of 11 mountain and 4 riparian habitat islands. Species richness increased with area on mountain islands, but area was unimportant in predicting species richness on riparian islands. Instead, isolation was of primary importance. Regardless of factors determining species richness, composition of species were deterministic; small assemblages were always totally included subsets of all larger assemblages. This pattern of determinism apparently reflects selective extinctions and the inability of species to recolonize due to the insurmountable barrier imposed by the Sonoran Desert.  相似文献

In habitats where the density of breeding individuals is higher, breeding success has been shown to increase with the number of close conspecific and heterospecific neighbours. However, the mechanisms linking habitat quality, group size of prey individuals and offspring defence are poorly known. In this field study, we examined the relationships between habitat quality and parental nest defence behaviour in the pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca). We found that mobbing is more intense in unmanaged forests where birds breed in more dense and diverse communities than in heavily managed young forests where heterospecific densities are lower. We also found that the mobbing activities of pied flycatchers breeding in unmanaged mature boreal forests attracted more neighbouring prey individuals than in nearby managed forests. This study shows that habitat quality-mediated effects might be responsible for the decreased group size of mobbing birds in managed forests, which may lead to less effective communal defence.  相似文献
