Quantifying the self-thinning process in various plant communities has been a long-standing issue in both theoretical and empirical studies. Most studies on plant self-thinning have centered only on aboveground parts, and rarely on belowground parts. There is still a general lack of comparison between above- and belowground self-thinning processes, especially for forest communities. The fundamental mechanistic difference and the functional association between above- and belowground competition indicate that the self-thinning process of belowground parts may be different from that of aboveground parts. We investigated the self-thinning lines for above-ground (M A), below-ground (M B), and total biomass (M T), respectively, across forest communities in China. The results showed that neither the classical self-thinning rule (−3/2 exponent) nor the universal scaling rule (−4/3 exponent) can apply to all the self-thinning relationships across these forest communities and that the self-thinning lines for belowground biomass were flatter and lower than those for aboveground biomass across most of these forest communities.  相似文献

Forest biomass plays a key role in the global carbon cycle. In the present study, a general allometric model was derived to predict the relationships among the stem biomass Ms, aboveground biomass MA and total biomass MT, based on previously developed scaling relationships for leaf, stem and root standing biomass. The model predicted complex scaling exponents for MT and/or MA with respect to Ms. Because annual biomass accumulation in the stem, root and branch far exceeded the annual increase in standing leaf biomass, we can predict that MT ∝MA ∝ Ms as a simple result of the model. Although slight variations existed in different phyletic affiliations (i.e. conifers versus angiosperms), empirical results using Model Type Ⅱ (reduced major axis) regression supported the model's predictions. The predictive formulas among stem, aboveground and total biomass were obtained using Model Type I (ordinary least squares) regression to estimate forest biomass. Given the low mean percentage prediction errors for aboveground (and total biomass) based on the stem biomass, the results provided a reasonable method to estimate the biomass of forests at the individual level, which was insensitive to the variation in local environmental conditions (e.g. precipitation, temperature, etc.).  相似文献

Background and Aims Empirical studies and allometric partitioning (AP) theory indicate that plant above-ground biomass (MA) scales, on average, one-to-one (isometrically) with below-ground biomass (MR) at the level of individual trees and at the level of entire forest communities. However, the ability of the AP theory to predict the biomass allocation patterns of understorey plants has not been established because most previous empirical tests have focused on canopy tree species or very large shrubs. Methods In order to test the AP theory further, 1586 understorey sub-tropical forest plants from 30 sites in south-east China were harvested and examined. The numerical values of the scaling exponents and normalization constants (i.e. slopes and y-intercepts, respectively) of log–log linear MA vs. MR relationships were determined for all individual plants, for each site, across the entire data set, and for data sorted into a total of 19 sub-sets of forest types and successional stages. Similar comparisons of MA/MR were also made.Key Results The data revealed that the mean MA/MR of understorey plants was 2·44 and 1·57 across all 1586 plants and for all communities, respectively, and MA scaled nearly isometrically with respect to MR, with scaling exponents of 1·01 for all individual plants and 0·99 for all communities. The scaling exponents did not differ significantly among different forest types or successional stages, but the normalization constants did, and were positively correlated with MA/MR and negatively correlated with scaling exponents across all 1586 plants. Conclusions The results support the AP theory’s prediction that MA scales nearly one-to-one with MR (i.e. MAMR ≈1·0) and that plant biomass partitioning for individual plants and at the community level share a strikingly similar pattern, at least for the understorey plants examined in this study. Furthermore, variation in environmental conditions appears to affect the numerical values of normalization constants, but not the scaling exponents of the MA vs. MR relationship. This feature of the results suggests that plant size is the primary driver of the MA vs. MR biomass allocation pattern for understorey plants in sub-tropical forests.  相似文献

We investigated functional coordination between branch hydraulic properties and leaf functional traits among nine miombo woodlands canopy tree species differing in habitat preference and phenology. Specifically, we were seeking to answer the question: are branch hydraulic properties coordinated with leaf functional traits linked to plant drought tolerance in seasonally dry tropical forests and what are the implications for species habitat preference? The hydraulic properties investigated in this study were stem area specific hydraulic conductivity (K S), Huber value (H v), and xylem cavitation vulnerability (??50). The leaf functional traits measured were specific leaf area (SLA), leaf dry matter content (LDMC), and mean leaf area (MLA). Generalists displayed significantly (P?<?0.05) higher cavitation resistance (??50) and SLA, but lower sapwood specific hydraulic conductivity (K S), leaf specific conductivity (K L), MLA, and LDMC than mesic specialists. Although MLA was uncorrelated with ??50, we found significant (P?<?0.05) positive and negative correlations between plant hydraulic properties and leaf functional traits linked to plant drought tolerance ability, indicating that the interactions between branch hydraulics and leaf functional traits related to plant drought tolerance ability may influence tree species habitat preference in water-limited ecosystems.  相似文献

The Sundarbans, the world??s largest single expanse of natural mangroves located in southern Bangladesh, is the most productive mangrove ecosystem in the world. Ceriops decandra (Griff.) Ding Hou is the dominant shrub in the strong saline zone of the Sundarbans and is mainly extracted for fuel wood, charcoal and tannin. The harvest of C. decandra has decreased by about 50?% in the Sundarbans during the last 10?years creating a major concern. This study derived allometric models of above-ground biomass and estimated of above-ground standing and harvestable biomass and nutrient stock in C. decandra in dominant forest types (C. decandra and C. decandra?CExcoecaria agallocha) in the Sundarbans. Allometric relationships between collar girth (CG) and biomass of plant parts (leaf, branch and stem) were tested using linear, power and logarithmic equations. The power equation was found to be most suitable. The density and the estimated total aboveground biomass of C. decandra in C. decandra and C. decandra?CE. agallocha forest types were 33,237 and 965?stems/ha (density) and 33.49 and 14.36?t/ha (biomass), respectively. Also, 13.56 and 6.61?t/ha of harvestable biomass were estimated, from C. decandra and C. decandra?CE. agallocha forest types, respectively. Nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus concentrations in the leaves, branches and stems showed significant (p?<?0.05) variation. The findings of the present study will help to quantify the impact of present harvesting techniques and alteration of different silvicultural intervention like fixation of felling cycle, felling criterion, and regeneration and slash treatment.  相似文献

The frequency distribution of diameter (x) in foliage shoot segments, ø(x), was examined in 18 branches at different height levels of three trees in a 25-yr-old sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) plantation. The ø-x relationships were approximated by power-form equations, in which the exponent differed among the branches from ?0.6 to ?4.2. Leaf area (S B) and leaf weight (W B) of a branch were estimated on the basis of the ø-x relationship, and the dependency of specific leaf area (SLA 0) and density (ρ 0) of a foliage shoot segment on itsx. SLA B value of a branch defined byS B/W B ranged from 27 to 80 cm2 g. d.w.?1 according to the exponent in the function of ø(x). Total leaf area (u) and leaf weight (wl) of a tree were estimated by summation ofS B andW B for seven sample trees. TheSLA T value of a tree defined byu/wl ranged from 65 to 76 cm2 g d.w.?1 and increased with stem diameter at clear length (D B). By use of the allometric equations betweenu andD B,LAI of the plot was estimated to be 17.3 ha ha?1 (half of the total surface area of needles). By a process similar to that used for calculatingLAI, the amount of woody tissues included in sugi foliage was evaluated to be about 10% of the stand foliage biomass.  相似文献

Coexistence of multiple species is a fundamental aspect of plant and forest ecology. Although spatial arrangement of leaves within crowns is an important determinant of light interception and productivity, shoot structure varies considerably among coexisting canopy species. We investigated the relative importance of structural traits in determining the light availability of leaves (I) and light interception efficiency at the current-year shoot level (LIECS; the total light interception of leaves divided by shoot biomass) at the top of crowns of 11 canopy species in a cool-temperate forest in Japan. In accordance with Corner’s rules, the total mass, stem mass, total mass of leaf laminae, individual leaf area, and stem cross-sectional area of current-year shoot were positively correlated with each other, and branching intensity (the number of current-year shoots per branch unit of 1-m length) was inversely correlated with these traits across species. In contrast, I was correlated not with these traits, but with leaf elevation angle (a L). Moreover, variation in LIECS across species was caused by variation in I (thus in a L). Thus, a L is a key parameter for the leaf light interception of canopy shoots in this cool-temperate forest. Differences in a L across species might be related to different physiological strategies that developed in the high light and water-limited environment of forest canopies. Small variation in the length of current-year shoots among species implies that variations in I and LIECS would be important for the coexistence of these canopy species.  相似文献

Dense dwarf bamboo population is a structurally and functionally important component in many subalpine forest systems. To characterize the effects of stem density on biomass, carbon and majority nutrients (N, P, K, Ca and Mg) distribution pattern, three dwarf bamboo (Fargesia denudata) populations with different stem densities (Dh with 220 ± 11 stems m?2, Dm with 140 ± 7 stems m?2, and Dl with 80 ± 4 stems m?2, respectively) were selected beneath a bamboo-fir (Picea purpurea) forest in Wanglang National Nature Reserve, Sichuan, China. Leaf, branch, rhizome, root and total biomass of dwarf bamboo increased with the increase of stem density, while carbon and nutrient concentrations in bamboo components decreased. Percentages of below-ground biomass and element stocks to total biomass and stocks decreased with the increase of stem density, whereas above-ground biomass and element stocks exhibited the opposite tendency. Moreover, more above-ground biomass and elements were allocated to higher part in the higher density population. In addition, percentages of culm biomass, above-ground biomass and element stocks below 100 cm culm height (H100) increased with the increase of stem density, while percentages of branch and leaf biomass below H100 decreased. Pearson’s correlation analyses revealed that root biomass, above-ground biomass, below-ground biomass and total biomass significantly correlated to leaf biomass in H100?200 and total leaf biomass within high density population, while they significantly correlated to leaf biomass in H50?150 within low density population. The results suggested that dwarf bamboo performed an efficient adaptive strategy to favor limited resources by altering biomass, carbon and nutrients distribution pattern in the dense population.  相似文献

Alpine steppe is considered to be the largest grassland type on the Tibetan Plateau. This grassland contributes to the global carbon cycle and is sensitive to climate changes. The allocation of biomass in an ecosystem affects plant growth and the overall functioning of the ecosystem. However, the mechanism by which plant biomass is allocated on the alpine steppe remains unclear. In this study, biomass allocation and its relationship to environmental factors on the alpine grassland were studied by a meta-analysis of 32 field sites across the alpine steppe of the northern Tibetan Plateau. We found that there is less above-ground biomass (MA) and below-ground biomass (MB) in the alpine steppe than there is in alpine meadows and temperate grasslands. By contrast, the root-to-shoot ratio (R:S) in the alpine steppe is higher than it is in alpine meadows and temperate grasslands. Although temperature maintained the biomass in the alpine steppe, precipitation was found to considerably influence MA, MB, and R:S, as shown by ordination space partitioning. After standardized major axis (SMA) analysis, we found that allocation of biomass on the alpine steppe is supported by the allometric biomass partitioning hypothesis rather than the isometric allocation hypothesis. Based on these results, we believe that MA and MB will decrease as a result of the increased aridity expected to occur in the future, which will reduce the landscape’s capacity for carbon storage.  相似文献

Allometric biomass allocation theory predicts that leaf biomass (ML) scaled isometrically with stem (MS) and root (MR) biomass, and thus above‐ground biomass (leaf and stem) (MA) and root (MR) scaled nearly isometrically with below‐ground biomass (root) for tree seedlings across a wide diversity of taxa. Furthermore, prior studies also imply that scaling constant should vary with species. However, litter is known about whether such invariant isometric scaling exponents hold for intraspecific biomass allocation, and how variation in scaling constants influences the interspecific scaling relationship between above‐ and below‐ground biomass. Biomass data of seedlings from five evergreen species were examined to test scaling relationships among biomass components across and within species. Model Type II regression was used to compare the numerical values of scaling exponents and constants among leaf, stem, root, and above‐ to below‐ground biomass. The results indicated that ML and MS scaled in an isometric or a nearly isometric manner with MR, as well as MA to MR for five woody species. Significant variation was observed in the Y‐intercepts of the biomass scaling curves, resulting in the divergence for intraspecific scaling and interspecific scaling relationships for ML versus MS and ML versus MR, but not for MS versus MR and MA versus MR. We conclude, therefore, that a nearly isometric scaling relationship of MA versus MR holds true within each of the studied woody species and across them irrespective the negative scaling relationship between leaf and stem.  相似文献

Canonical rules for plant organ biomass partitioning and annual allocation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Here we review a general allometric model for the allometric relationships among standing leaf, stem, and root biomass (M(L), M(S), and M(R), respectively) and the exponents for the relationships among annual leaf, stem, and root biomass production or "growth rates" (G(L), G(S), and G(R), respectively). This model predicts that M(L) ∝ M(S)(3/4) ∝ M(R)(3/4) such that M(S) ∝ M(R) and that G(L) ∝ G(S) ∝ G(R). A large synoptic data set for standing plant organ biomass and organ biomass production spanning ten orders of magnitude in total plant body mass supports these predictions. Although the numerical values for the allometric "constants" governing these scaling relationships differ between angiosperms and conifers, across all species, standing leaf, stem, and root biomass, respectively, comprise 8%, 67%, and 25% of total plant biomass, whereas annual leaf, stem, and root biomass growth represent 30%, 57%, and 13% of total plant growth. Importantly, our analyses of large data sets confirm the existence of scaling exponents predicted by theory. These scaling "rules" emerge from simple biophysical mechanisms that hold across a remarkably broad spectrum of ecologically and phyletically divergent herbaceous and tree-sized monocot, dicot, and conifer species. As such, they are likely to extend into evolutionary history when tracheophytes with the stereotypical "leaf," "stem," and "root" body plan first appeared.  相似文献

Water availability is a principal factor limiting the distribution of closed-canopy forest in the seasonal tropics, suggesting that forest tree species may not be well adapted to cope with seasonal drought. We studied 11 congeneric species pairs, each containing one forest and one savanna species, to test the hypothesis that forest trees have a lower capacity to maintain seasonal homeostasis in water relations relative to savanna species. To quantify this, we measured sap flow, leaf water potential (ΨL), stomatal conductance (g s), wood density, and Huber value (sapwood area:leaf area) of the 22 study species. We found significant differences in the water relations of these two species types. Leaf area specific hydraulic conductance of the soil/root/leaf pathway (G t) was greater for savanna species than forest species. The lower G t of forest trees resulted in significantly lower ΨL and g s in the late dry season relative to savanna trees. The differences in G t can be explained by differences in biomass allocation of savanna and forest trees. Savanna species had higher Huber values relative to forest species, conferring greater transport capacity on a leaf area basis. Forest trees have a lower capacity to maintain homeostasis in ΨL due to greater allocation to leaf area relative to savanna species. Despite significant differences in water relations, relationships between traits such as wood density and minimum ΨL were indistinguishable for the two species groups, indicating that forest and savanna share a common axis of water-use strategies involving multiple traits.  相似文献

Temperature generally explained variation in branch and leaf biomasses, whereas stem and root biomasses–temperature relationships restricted certain age stages may not hold at broader age ranges.

Abstract

In this study, biomass data for alpine temperate Larix forest, alpine Picea-Abies forest, temperate typical deciduous broadleaved forest, temperate Pinus tabulaeformis forest, temperate mixed coniferous-broadleaved forest, montane Populus-Betula deciduous forest, subtropical evergreen broadleaved forest, subtropical montane Cupressus and Sabina forest, subtropical Pinus massoniana forest and subtropical Cunninghamia lanceolata forest were used to examine the effect of temperature on biomass allocations between organs. The data of the ten forests were classified as ≤30, 31–60 and >60 years, to test whether biomass allocations of these age group forests vary systematically in their responses to temperature. With increasing mean annual temperature, branch and leaf biomasses significantly increased in ≤30, 31–60 and >60 years and all age groups; stem biomass significantly increased in ≤30-, 31–60- and >60-year groups, but no significant trend in all age groups; Root biomass significantly increased in 31–60, >60 years and all age groups, but had no response to mean annual temperature in the 30-year group, which suggest that root biomass allocation in response to temperature is dependent upon forest age. We conclude that temperature generally explained variation in branch and leaf biomasses, whereas stem and root biomasses–temperature relationships restricted certain age stages may not hold at broader age ranges.

Based on the isometric hypothesis, belowground plant biomass (MB) should scale isometrically with aboveground biomass (MA) and the scaling exponent should not vary with environmental factors. We tested this hypothesis using a large forest biomass database collected in China. Allometric scaling functions relating MB and MA were developed for the entire database and for different groups based on tree age, diameter at breast height, height, latitude, longitude or elevation. To investigate whether the scaling exponent is independent of these biotic and abiotic factors, we analyzed the relationship between the scaling exponent and these factors. Overall MB was significantly related to MA with a scaling exponent of 0.964. The scaling exponent of the allometric function did not vary with tree age, density, latitude, or longitude, but varied with diameter at breast height, height, and elevation. The mean of the scaling exponent over all groups was 0.986. Among 57 scaling relationships developed, 26 of the scaling exponents were not significantly different from 1. Our results generally support the isometric hypothesis. MB scaled near isometrically with MA and the scaling exponent did not vary with tree age, density, latitude, or longitude, but increased with tree size and elevation. While fitting a single allometric scaling relationship may be adequate, the estimation of MB from MA could be improved with size-specific scaling relationships.  相似文献

Understanding the scaling between leaf size and leafing intensity (leaf number per stem size) is crucial for comprehending theories about the leaf costs and benefits in the leaf size–twig size spectrum. However, the scaling scope of leaf size versus leafing intensity changes along the twig leaf size variation in different leaf habit species remains elusive. Here, we hypothesize that the numerical value of scaling exponent for leaf mass versus leafing intensity in twig is governed by the minimum leaf mass versus maximum leaf mass (M min versus M max) and constrained to be ≤−1.0. We tested this hypothesis by analyzing the twigs of 123 species datasets compiled in the subtropical mountain forest. The standardized major axis regression (SMA) analyses showed the M min scaled as the 1.19 power of M max and the ‐α (−1.19) were not statistically different from the exponents of M min versus leafing intensity in whole data. Across leaf habit groups, the M max scaled negatively and isometrically with respect to leafing intensity. The pooled data''s scaling exponents ranged from −1.14 to −0.96 for M min and M max versus the leafing intensity based on stem volume (LIV). In the case of M min and M max versus the leafing intensity based on stem mass (LIM), the scaling exponents ranged from −1.24 to −1.04. Our hypothesis successfully predicts that the scaling relationship between leaf mass and leafing intensity is constrained to be ≤−1.0. More importantly, the lower limit to scaling of leaf mass and leafing intensity may be closely correlated with M min versus M max. Besides, constrained by the maximum leaf mass expansion, the broad scope range between leaf size and number may be insensitive to leaf habit groups in subtropical mountain forest.  相似文献

Genetic differences in individual-tree biomass partitioning, growth efficiency, and stem relative growth rate (RGR) could confer intraspecific productivity differences and might strongly influence forest ecosystem carbon storage. We examined the relationship between genotype productivity (stem volume), whole-tree biomass partitioning, growth efficiency (stem wood production per unit leaf area), and stem RGR among nine different loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) genotypes from three different genetic groups of contrasting inherent genetic homogeneity: three open-pollinated (half-sib) families, three mass-control pollinated (full-sib) families, and three clonal varieties. We hypothesized that genotype productivity would be positively associated with increased partitioning to stem wood relative to other plant parts, higher stem RGR, and enhanced growth efficiency. After 3 years under plantation conditions, genotypes showed significant differences in stem volume, percent stem wood, percent branch wood, and partitioning to fine roots, yet no differences in stem RGR or growth efficiency. Furthermore, genotypic differences in stem volume were independent of genotypic differences in biomass partitioning, and overall, we found no evidence to support the hypothesized relationships. Even so, the observed variation in biomass partitioning has implications for forest C sequestration as genotypes which partition more biomass to long-lived biomass pools such as stems, may sequester more C. Moreover, the lack of a genetic relationship between stem volume and belowground partitioning suggests that highly productive genotypes may be planted without compromising belowground C storage.  相似文献

Basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) seedlings were cultured on liquid medium in controlled conditions. Two varieties differing in leaf size were compared. When plants were 30?days old, the medium was supplemented with 50?mM NaCl. After 15?days of treatment, root, stem and leaf biomass, leaf number, and leaf surface area were measured. Ion accumulation was determined in roots, stems, and leaves. Photosynthetic parameters (CO2 fixation rate, internal CO2 concentration, stomatal conductance) as well as transpiration rate were determined on separate leaves. Electrolyte leakage and malondialdehyde content were used to estimate damage to membranes and lipid peroxidation, respectively. Several antioxidant enzymatic activities were used as proxies of oxidative stress. High Na+ concentration was reached in leaf tissues. Salt restricted whole plant biomass deposition rate by diminishing leaf number and leaf expansion, as well as photosynthetic activity were estimated from whole plant biomass production per unit leaf surface area. Diminished stomatal conductance restricted CO2 fixation rate, and decrease in chlorophyll content presumably limited photosynthetic activity. Lipid peroxidation revealed damages to membranes. The magnitude of these responses differed between the two varieties, indicating that an intraspecific variability in salt response exists in basil.  相似文献
