Feldberger Haussee provides a classic example of eutrophication history of hardwater lakes in the Baltic Lake District (Germany) and of changes in their algal flora during the 20th century. The lake originally was regarded as slightly eutrophic. A process of drastic eutrophication from the 1950s until the end of the 1970s caused mass developments of blue-green and green algae. A restoration program was started in the 1980s to improve the water quality of the lake using both diversion of sewage outside the catchment area, and biomanipulation by altering the fish community. This restoration program led to positive changes in the lake ecosystem. Direct effects of biomanipulation resulted in an increase of herbivorous zooplankton, a decrease of phytoplankton biomass, and an increase of water transparency. The recovery of Feldberger Haussee also may have been indirectly enhanced by an increase in nutrient sedimentation as a consequence of intensified calcite precipitation, decrease in phosphorus remobilization due to a pH-decrease, increased NIP-ratio, and recolonization of the littoral zone by macrophytes. This paper concentrates on the long term development of the phytoplankton community as a response to changes in the food web structure as well as to alterations in the chemical environment of the algae. Both are reflected in four major stages passed by the algal assemblage between 1980 and 1994: (1) From 1980-summer 1985 dense green algal populations were found indicating similar conditions as in the 1970s during the period of maximum eutrophication. (2) A diverse phytoplankton community during summer 1985–1989 showed the first effects of a recovery. (3) From 1990–1992 the phytoplankton was characterized by ungrazeable filamentous blue-green algae first of all as a response to increased herbivory of zooplankton on edible species and to increasing N/P-ratios. (4) Finally, the algal species diversity increased in 1993 and 1994 whereas the phytoplankton biomass decreased showing the success of the combined restoration measures.  相似文献

The influences of imports of nutrients and planktonic algae from the River Spree on the dynamics of phytoplankton were examined in the shallow, eutrophic Müggelsee, which has a retention time of only 42 days. Phytoplankton biomass and nutrient concentrations were measured in both the lake and its inflow from 1980–1990. On a long-term average, mean biomass as well as vitality of most dominant phytoplankton populations in the lake were not significantly different from those in the river. Nevertheless, during distinct periods the external rates of biomass change of single lake populations (due to dilution or enrichment) were as high as the lake internal ones. The import of inocula populations from the river probably induced the formation of the typical community structure in the lake. Growth and decay of phytoplankton populations in the river strongly influenced the load of dissolved nutrients and thus indirectly the dynamics of planktonic algae in the downstream lake. For example, intensive assimilation of phosphorus by riverine algae in spring intensified the P-shortage and supported possible P-limitation of algal growth in the lake at that time. In years with high vernal biomass of centric diatoms in the river, and thus diminished import of dissolved silicon, the growth of diatoms was suppressed and that of cyanobacteria was favoured in the lake during summer.  相似文献

In a 20-month study, phytoplankton and periphyton chl a, and dry mass of macroscopic algal aggregates in four marshes and a lake within the Okefenokee Swamp (Georgia, USA) were comparable to other wetlands and lake littoral areas. Chlorophyll levels in two marshes were inversely related to water level and phytoplankton at three marshes developed unimodal maxima following macrophyte dieback. Standing stocks in a vernally inundated marsh were greater than a nearby marsh which was permanently inundated; chlorophyll levels displayed longer blooms in the inundated marsh during periods of low rainfall or after drought. Field dynamics, sediment sorption characteristics and algal bioassays suggest that evaporative drawdown stimulates algae by release of nutrients from exposed peat, while high water levels reduce nutrient release from sediments and disperse phytoplankton through flushing. Equilibrium phosphate concentrations of sediments and algal levels were higher at an abandoned rookery than a nearby non-rookery area, indicating nutrient enrichment from residual guano deposits.  相似文献

Phytoplankton dynamics in Lake Müggelsee, a eutrophic and polymictic lake in Berlin, and in the inflowing lowland River Spree have been comprehensively investigated during the last two decades. Zooplankton dynamics, nutrient supply, light climate, duration of ice cover and of summer stratification have also been regularly measured to help to explain phytoplankton development. The first period (1978–1990) was characterised by high nutrient loads and dominance of cyanobacteria from spring to autumn. Since then, loads of phosphorus and nitrogen have been lowered by 40–50%. Oscillatoria-like cyanobacteria (Limnothrix redekei, Planktothrix agardhii) were favoured under hypertrophic conditions in both the polymictic lake and the river, but they have disappeared nearly completely after nutrient reduction. Development of these species depended on meteorological conditions and nutrient supply in spring rather than on seasonal averages of nutrient concentrations. Diatoms have became dominant and chlorophytes have increased their share of the biomass since the nutrient load was reduced. Species com- position changed even within the algal groups. Retention time of water and duration of thermal stratification of the water column modified phytoplankton structure. Mobile algae like Microcystisor Ceratium occurred in the lake during stratification periods. Otherwise, species composition in the shallow, polymictic lake was very similar to that in the inflowing lowland river. Species with high starting biomass, fed by high riverine import, resting stages or perennation were selected in this flushed system.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Based on data for 14C-primary production and biomass changes in a small and shallow lake (Créteil Lake, France), overall phytoplankton losses were calculated through an annual cycle (November 1985-October 1986). The summer period in 1986 is compared with two other summer periods in 1985 and 1980, these two years corresponding to extreme levels of algal biomass.
2. Independent from the trophic state of the lake, phytoplankton populations were dominated by small-sized species (<20 μm); their high growth rate (maximal in May and June: 0–8 day−1) was characteristic of nanoplanktonic natural populations.
3. The positive correlation between phytoplankton losses and production indicates a close coupling between growth and loss processes.
4. With a high filtering rate (0.22 day−1 as an annual average), zoo-plankton impact is considerable at any time of the year but especially in late summer, when grazing losses exceeded primary production.
5. Despite the uncertainty concerning the meaning of 14C-primary production, the persistence of small algae throughout the year implies that a great part of the phytoplankton production was harvested by grazers which led to a recycling of organic matter within the water column.  相似文献

We studied phytoplankton community and succession in Lake Dishui, the largest man-made coastal lake in China. The lake experienced drastic changes in physicochemical conditions since its creation in 2003. Monthly phytoplankton communities were characterized between 2006 and 2011. A two-dimensional solution of nonmetric multidimensional scaling clearly delineated four groups of distinct phytoplankton community structure. Indicator species analysis showed that Group I (2006–2008) was characterized by mainly nanoplankton including Chromulina pygmaea. Group II (2009) was characterized by nonmotile, unicellular, elongated, or filamentous taxa, which are resistant to grazing pressure due to their large size. Group III (winter–early spring since 2010) was characterized by many motile taxa. The most characteristic taxa in Group IV (summer–autumn since 2010) were the flagellate algae. Seasonal variation in phytoplankton community was highest after 2010. Changes in phytoplankton communities may closely reflect rapid changes in lake environmental conditions such as desalination and nutrient enrichment.

Onondaga Lake, possibly the most polluted lake in New York State, supports an algal flora characteristic of a eutrophic lake with an admixture of saline species. Floral diversity is noteworthy under the circumstances. Seasons in the lake may be identified by the succession of flora. High salinity of lake water results in layering at the outfall (as in an estuary, in reverse) such that river water may enter the lake at the outlet despite continuous net outflow. Certain species of algae appeared first at the outflow station and then spread through the lake. Phosphorus and nitrogen are never limiting, although seasonal diminution in the latter may influence the composition of the flora. Silica diminution was related to blooms of diatoms and may then be limiting for further growth of diatom populations. No obvious controlling relationship exists between herbivores and phytoplankton populations. The euphotic layer is typically much shallower than the thermocline. Therefore turbulence and mixing may play an important role in controlling certain populations. A brief midsummer clearing in 1969, characteristic for the lake, resulted in serious oxygen depletion and cannot be accounted for with the available data. Among metals, chromium and copper are high in the lake as the result of industrial discharges. The former may be inhibiting, the latter probably is inhibiting to algal growth. Consequently, measures underway to “clean up” the lake may result in increased blooms. Biomass calculations have been made for the major phytoplankters, and a list of 82 species is presented.  相似文献

Calanoid copepods are major components of most lacustrine ecosystems and their grazing activities may influence both phytoplankton biomass and species composition. To assess this we conducted four seasonal, in situ, grazing experiments in eutrophic Lake Rotomanuka, New Zealand. Ambient concentrations of late stage copepodites and adults of calanoid copepods (predominantly Calamoecia lucasi, but with small numbers of Boeckella delicata) were allowed to feed for nine days on natural phytoplankton assemblages suspended in the lake within 1160 litre polyethylene enclosures. The copepods reduced the total phytoplankton biomass of the dominant species in all experiments but were most effective in summer (the time of highest grazer biomass) followed by spring and autumn. In response to grazing pressure the density of individual algal species showed either no change or a decline. There were no taxa which increased in density in the presence of the copepods. The calanoid copepods suppressed the smallest phytoplankton species (especially those with GALD (Greatest Axial Linear Dimension) < µm) and there appeared to be no selection of algae on the basis of biovolume. Algal taxa which showed strong declines in abundance in the presence of the copepods include Cyclotella stelligera, Coelastrum spp., Trachelomonas spp., Cryptomonas spp., and Mallomonas akrokomos. Calanoid copepods are considered important grazers of phytoplankton biomass in this lake. The study supports the view that high phytoplankton:zooplankton biomass ratios and large average algal sizes characteristic of New Zealand lake plankton may, at least partly, be caused by year round grazing pressure on small algae shifting the competitive balance in favour of larger algal species.  相似文献

The phytoplankton of Lake Kinneret, a warm monomictic lake,is dominated by a Pyrrhophyta-Chlorophyta assemblage. Four stagesof succession of planktonic algae occur in the lake, startingwith thermal and chemical destratification and ending with stratification. The index of diversity of the phytoplankton communities is highduring the destratification and mixed periods. The index reachesminimal values during late summer, when the ecosystem is subjectto strong physical, chemical and biological stresses. The diversityin Lake Kinneret increases with the increase in nutrients andnot with the increase in temperature. During most of the year, the nanoplanktonic forms are in greaternumbers than the netplankton species. This fact is correlatedwith the amounts of available nutrients in the lake. The annual averages of the wet autotrophic biomass in Lake Kinneretare very high in comparison with other warm lakes. The contributionof the nanoplanktonic species to the total algal biomass isvery small during the Peridinium bloom, but represents approximatelyhalf of the total algal biomass during the rest of the year. The concentration of nutrients in the water, together with theadverse competitive effect of Peridinium on other algae, areto a large extent responsible for the composition, successionand abundance of the phytoplankton assemblages in Lake Kinneret.  相似文献

This study deals with the variation in the algal assemblages across the transversal dimension of a wetland of the Lower Paraná River from October 1998 to September 1999. The relationship between the algal composition and the physico-chemical variables is analyzed by means of Canonical Correspondence Analysis. The abundant floating macrophytes generated a severe reduction in light penetration in the relictual oxbow lakes (ROLs), almost anoxic conditions and high values of P, N and K. Such characteristics accounted for their very particular algal flora dominated by Cyanobacteria and several diatoms, species probably mixotrophic regarding their capacity to grow in darkness and tolerate very low oxygen contents. In the shallow lake, the phytoplankton comprised many small autotrophic green algae, accompanied by many flagellates of the classes Cryptophyceae, Euglenophyceae and Dinophyceae. Our results indicate that the macrophyte cover was probably the stirring factor in the selection of algal species along the transitional zone comprising a floodplain shallow lake and several ROLs.  相似文献

Biomass assessments of algae in wetlands usually include only the phytoplankton community without considering the contribution of other algal associations to total algal biomass. This omission prevents an accurate evaluation of the phytoplankton community as an integral part of the total ecosystem. In the present work, the biomass contributions (expressed as chlorophyll-a content per m2 of lake) of phytoplankton, epiphyton on both submerged and emergent macrophytes, and epipelon were measured in Lacombe Lake, Argentina, for the purpose of (1) establishing the relative importance of the phytoplankton and (2) evaluating the entire contribution of algal biomass within the context of the Goldsborough & Robinson conceptual model. Our sampling was carried out monthly for a year in sites representative of different conditions with respect to water depth and type of macrophytes. Physicochemical analyses of water were performed following standard methods. Plankton was collected in a five-level profile at deeper stations and in subsurface samples at the shallow one. Samples of sediment obtained with corers were collected for epipelon sampling and segments of plants were cut at different levels, so as to obtain the epiphytes by scraping. Pigment was extracted with aqueous acetone and calculations were made by means of the Lorenzen equation. According to the Goldsborough & Robinson model, a Lake State developed here during the winter (phytoplankton maxima: 150 mg chlorophyll-a per m2). Then, through the subsequent growth of the submerged macrophytes, an Open State was observed, characterized by a maximum epiphyton biomass (at 3,502 mg chlorophyll-a per m2) along with lower levels of phytoplankton biomass. The epiphytic algae on the emergent macrophytes were always present but attained only relatively low biomass values (maximum: 120 mg of chlorophyll-a per m2 in February). The epipelon biomass varied between 50 and 252 mg chlorophyll-a per m2, registering a considerable contribution of settled algae from the water column (phytoplankton). This study contributes to our knowledge of wetland dynamics through its assessment of the rapid changes in the relative contributions of both planktonic and attached algae to the total algal biomass within the context of specific environmental factors.

Phytoplankton periodicity in a subtropical lake (Lake Kinneret,Israel)   总被引:5,自引:5,他引:0
Lake kinneret is a subtropical monomictic lake characterized by a Pyrrhophyta-Chlorophyta assemblage, supplemented by Cyanophyta in some years. Concerning their abundance and seasonal occurrence, the phytoplanktonic algae belong to two groups: algae appearing in quantity at a definite annual period and algae present throughout the year. Four stages of algal succession occur in the lake. There is a marked periodicity in the phytoplankton composition with a high standing stock in winter-spring, due to the dinoflagellate water-bloom, and a low one during the summer months, related to the high stability of summer stratification. The annual succession at the species level has been an almost constant event in the lake for many years. The increase in nutrient concentrations in 1973 and 1974 increased the diversity and abundance of algae (except Peridinium) but did not lead to significant changes in algal succession. Conversely, the decrease of the zooplankton grazing pressure in 1975 and 1976 facilitated the development of algal maxima during summer-fall. They were caused by nanoplanktonic forms, and they developed without additional enrichment of nutrients. The algal abundance and diversity decreased. The years 1981 and 1982 were characterized by both an increase in phosphorus and a decrease in zooplankton. These conditions favored the concomitant abundance of many species and an increase of non-Pyrrhophyta biomass.  相似文献

The dumping of bauxite tailings on a clear-water Amazonian lake caused a significant decrease in phytoplankton densities. The influence of these suspended clay particles on algal sinking, through algae–clay aggregation, was investigated under laboratory conditions, by measuring fluctuations in algal population densities over time, with different suspended clay concentrations. The population densities of the four algal species tested, Phormidium amoenum, Mougeotia sp., Staurodesmus convergens and Chlorella sp., were decreased by the algae–clay aggregation. The extent of this process was dependent on algal morphological characteristics such as size and shape, as well as on the concentration of suspended clay particles.  相似文献

SUMMARY. The plankton community within an Equisetum fluviatile stand in oligotrophic Lake Pääjärvi had distinct diurnal fluctuations in the total cell volume and species composition of algae and in the abundance of microcrustaceans ( Bosmina coregoni ). Diurnal fluctuations in pH, oxygen saturation and temperature of the water were also recorded. Within the littoral region, daytime pH values > 9 were recorded, whereas in the pelagial region of the lake, values remained near pH 7. Diatoms and green algae dominated the littoral phytoplankton especially in the innermost parts of the macrophyte stand, with cryptophytes (dominant in the pelagial area) occurring only in small numbers. At the outer parts of the macrophyte stand, water movements between the pelagial and littoral areas might rapidly increase the contribution of cryptophytes in the phytoplankton. The fall in algal cell volume during the night may have resulted from settling out of cells in the absence of wind-induced water movements, perhaps together with increased grazing pressure from dense swarms of Bosmina (up to 3000 individuals per litre) which appeared during the night.  相似文献

Macrophytes and phytoplankton are recognized as having roles in determining alternative stable states in shallow lakes and reservoirs, while the role of periphyton has been poorly investigated. Temporal and spatial variation of phytoplankton, epipelon and epiphyton was examined in a shallow reservoir with high abundance of aquatic macrophytes. The relationships between algae communities and abiotic factors, macrophyte coverage and zooplankton density were also analyzed. Monthly sampling was performed in three zones of the depth gradient of the reservoir. Two phases of algal dominance were found: a phytoplankton phase and epipelon phase. The phase of phytoplankton dominance was characterized by high macrophyte coverage. Rotifera was the dominant zooplankton group in all the zones. Flagellate algae were dominant in phytoplankton, epipelon and epiphyton. Macrophyte coverage was found to be a predictor for algal biomass. Changes in biomass and species composition were associated with macrophyte cover variation, mainly the Nymphaea. In addition to the abiotic factors, the macrophyte coverage was a determining factor for changes to the algal community, contributing to the alternation between dominance phases of phytoplankton and epipelon. The macrophyte–phytoplankton–periphyton relationship needs to be further known in shallow reservoirs, especially the role of epipelon as an alternate stable state.

Planktonic food chains of a highly humic lake   总被引:4,自引:4,他引:0
The development and metabolism of the plankton of a highly humic lake were followed over the vernal primary production maximum. The study was made in a mesocosm in which large filter feeders, typical of this lake in summer, were absent. During the rising phase of phytoplankton, the community was predominantly autotrophic. The most important constituents in the algal biomass were a dinoflagellate, Gymnodinium sp. (40–50%), and a prasinophycean, Scourfieldia cordiformis (7%). The biomasses of Chlamydomonas spp. and Chrysococcus spp. reached their maxima a few days later and Cryptomonas sp. became most abundant at the end of the experiment. After the phytoplankton maximum, about one week from the beginning ofthe experiment, grazing of algae by phagotrophic protozoans and phosphate depletion led to a rapid decrease of algal biomass and the community became predominantly heterotrophic. In spite of a large variation in algal biomass and primary production, the biomass of bacteria remained of the same order of magnitude as in algae both before and after the algal maximum. Bacteria were mostly responsible for the plankton respiration, which also showed no dependence on primary production. Since exudation by phytoplankton was also low, the nutrition of bacterioplankton was probably mainly based on allochthonous dissolved organic matter rather than or primary production. Thus the production of bacteria was an additional food source for higher trophic levels along with phytoplankton. Because filter feeding zooplankton was absent in the experiment, protozoans were the only grazers utilizing algae and bacteria. Essentially all growth of bacteria was used by bacterivores.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of long-term research regarding the algal biodiversity of the Sikhote-Alin biosphere reserve, Primorsky region (Russian Far East). The algal flora is compised of 675 species represented by 839 subspecific taxa from seven divisions: Cyanophyta, 77 (91 including subspecific taxa); Euglenophyta, 18 (21); Chlorophyta, 84 (86); Streptophyta, 137 (169); Rhodophyta, 3; Ochrophyta, 355 (468): Diatomophyceae, 331 (444), Chrysophyceae, 6, Xanthophyceae, 16, Phaeophyceae, 2; Dinophyta, 1. The algal floras of ecologically different reserve water bodies are described, including the brackish, Blagodatnoe Lake, the shallow freshwater Golubichnoe Lake, the alpine Solontsovskie Lakes, the rapid cold-water Serebryanka and Dzhigitovka rivers, and the lowland Kolumbe River. The taxonomic composition of the algal flora has been analysed. Differences between the algal communities of lakes and rivers are described and rare species are noted. The algal flora of the Sikhote-Alin biosphere reserve is currently the richest and most diverse of the six reserves studied in the Primorsky region.  相似文献
