C and N mineralization kinetics of 25 catch crop (CC) residues, whose organic C:N ratio varied from 9.5 to 34.0, were studied during soil incubations under controlled conditions. Decomposition rates were rather similar for the different CC residues, 59% to 68% residue-C being mineralized after 168 days incubation. C mineralized during the first weeks was mainly correlated to the soluble C content of the residue. N mineralized from CC residues was much more variable (?4.9 to +38.0 mg N g?1 added C at day 168), and was mainly related to the organic N content in residues. C and N mineralization kinetics were simulated with STICS residue decomposition model, using the previous parameterization mostly based on mature crop residues (Nicolardot et al. Plant Soil 228:83–103, 2001). A reasonable agreement was found between measured and simulated C kinetics but N mineralization was underestimated by the model. A new parameterization was carried out to improve N predictions. The fitting procedure was first applied independently to each CC residue in order to optimise the five parameters of the model. The relationships found between each optimised parameter and the C:N ratio of CC residues were similar to those obtained previously, indicating that the same model was applicable to all residues. The parameters of these relationships were fitted on a combined dataset including CC and mature residues. The new parameterisation lead to better simulations for CC residues, the errors of prediction (RMSE) for C and N mineralization being 32 and 1.8 mg g?1 added C, respectively. For the whole dataset (68 residues), the RMSE were 50 and 3.3 mg g?1 added C. The prediction quality is satisfactory with respect to the model simplicity and the single criterion of residue quality (C:N ratio).  相似文献

Managing the crop residue particle size has the potential to affect N conservation in agricultural systems. We investigated the influence of barley (Hordeum vulgare) and pea (Pisum sativum) crop residue particle size on N mineralization and denitrification in two laboratory experiments. Experiment 1: 15N-labelled ground (3 mm) and cut (25 mm) barley residue, and microcrystalline cellulose+glucose were mixed into a sandy loam soil with additional inorganic N. Experiment 2: inorganic15 N and C2H2 were added to soils with barley and pea material after 3, 26, and 109 days for measuring gross N mineralization and denitrification.Net N immobilization over 60 days in Experiment 1 cumulated to 63 mg N kg-1 soil (ground barley), 42 (cut barley), and 122 (cellulose+glucose). More N was seemingly net mineralized from ground barley (3.3 mg N kg-1 soil) than from cut barley (2.7 mg N kg-1 soil). Microbial biomass peaked at day 4 with the barley treatments and at day 14 with the cellulose+glucose whereafter the biomass leveled out at values 79 mg C kg-1 (ground), 104 (cut), and 242 (cellulose+glucose) higher than for the control soil. Microbial growth yields were similar for the two barley treatments, ca. 60 mg C g-1 substrate C added, which was lower than the 142 mg C g-1 C added with cellulose+glucose. This suggests that the 75% (w/w) holocelluloses and sugars contained with the barley material remained physically protected despite grinding. In Experiment 2 gross mineralization on day 3 was 4.8 mg N kg-1 d-1 with ground pea, twice as much as for all other treatments. On day 26 the treatment with ground barley had the greatest gross N mineralization. In static cores ground barley denitrified 11-fold more than did cut barley, whereas denitrification was similar for the two pea treatments. In suspensions denitrification was similar for the two treatments both with barley and pea residue. We conclude that the higher microbial activity associated with the initial decomposition of ground plant material is due to a more intimate plant residue-soil contact. On the long term, grinding the plant residues has no significant effect on N dynamics.  相似文献

Predicting the C and N mineralization of straw added to soil is important for forecasting subsequent soil N availability during and between crop growth cycles. The decomposition module of the STICS model, parameterized under optimal conditions, was used to predict straw decomposition in sub-optimal conditions, i.e. when contact between soil and residue was poor (due to large size residues or surface placement) or when mineral N availability was restricted. The data used in the simulations were obtained from published studies of effects of residue size, location and N availability on C and N mineralization from straw under controlled laboratory conditions. We selected studies in which the dynamics of C and N mineralization were measured simultaneously. The dynamics of straw mineralization could be well predicted by the model under optimal conditions with standard parameter values as derived from measured C/N ratios of the residues, but not under sub-optimal conditions which required a new parameterization. A good fit could be obtained on these treatments by a marked reduction in the rate constants of residue and microbial biomass decomposition and a marked increase in the microbial biomass C/N ratio. Our results show the need to include in decomposition models routines for simulating effects of spatial heterogeneity of residue distribution, different particle sizes and limiting N availability.  相似文献

Soil nitrogen heterogeneity in a Dehesa ecosystem   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The C mineralization and N transformations during the decomposition of sunflower stalks (Helianthus annuus L.) and wheat straw (Triticum aestivum L.) with and without addition of (NH4)2SO4 (27.53 atom% 15N) were studied in a Vertisol. Soil samples were incubated under aerobic conditions for 224 days at 22 °C. The plant residues were added at a rate of 5.2 g kg-1 soil. Nitrogen was applied at a rate of 50.7 mg N kg-1 soil. Carbon dioxide emission and inorganic N content in soil were periodically determined. Gross N immobilization and remineralization were calculated on the basis of the isotopic dilution technique. At the end of the incubation period a 15N balance was established. Respectively, 68 and 45% of the applied residue-C mineralized from the sunflower stalks and wheat straw after 224 days. Both crop residues caused losses of up to 25% of added 15N after 224 days of incubation. These 15N losses were about three times larger than in the control soil, and were probably due to denitrification. The net immobilization of soil derived N following residue incorporation was largest in the case of wheat straw, depleting all soil inorganic N. In the wheat straw treatment with added (NH4)2SO4 soil inorganic N remained available, resulting in an enhanced initial C mineralization and N immobilization compared to the treatment without added N. In the case of the sunflower stalks, the high inorganic N content of the stalks suppressed the effects of N addition on C mineralization and N immobilization/mineralization. Gross N immobilization amounted to 31.9 and 28.2 mg N g-1 added C after 14 days for wheat straw and sunflower stalks, respectively. At the end of the incubation, about 35% of the newly immobilized N was remineralized in both plant residue treatments. Gross N immobilization plotted against decomposed C suggests that fairly uniform C-N relationships exist during the decomposition of divers C substrates. The results demonstrate that low fertilizer N use efficiencies may be expected in a wheat-sunflower cropping system with incorporation of crop residues, as the fertilizer N applied becomes largely immobilized in the soil organic fraction. Characterization of decomposition characteristics is important for sound management of organic residues for both soils and livestock, but routine residue quality analysis is hindered by slow and costly laboratory methods. This study tested the accuracy and repeatability of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) for direct prediction of in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) and C and N mineralization for a diverse range of organic materials (mostly crop and tree residues) of varying quality (n = 32). The residue samples were aerobically incubated in a sandy soil and amounts of C and N mineralized determined after 28 days. IVDMD and quality attributes were determined using wet chemistry methods. Repeatability was higher with NIR than the original wet chemistry methods: on average NIR halved the measurement standard deviation. NIR predicted IVDMD and C and N mineralization more accurately than models based on wet chemical analysis of residue quality attributes: reduction in root mean square error of prediction with NIR, compared with using quality attributes, was IVDMD, 6%; C mineralization after 28 days, 8%; and N mineralization after 28 days, 8%. Cross-validated r 2 values for measured wet chemistry vs. NIR-predicted values were: IVDMD, 0.88; C mineralization, 0.82; and N mineralization, 0.87. Direct prediction of decomposition and mineralization from NIR is faster, more accurate and more repeatable than prediction from residue quality attributes determined using wet chemistry. Further research should be directed towards establishment of diverse NIR calibration libraries under controlled conditions and direct calibration of soil quality, crop and livestock responses in the field to NIR characteristics of residues.  相似文献

Catch crops can effectively decrease nitrate leaching in arable cropping systems but their long-term impacts on nitrogen mineralization are not well known. This study quantified the effects of continuous catch crops on net N mineralization, crop N uptake, crop N use efficiency and N leaching in three long-term (13?C17?years) field experiments in northern France. Mustard was grown every year at Boigneville, radish every year at Thibie and ryegrass every 2?years at Kerlavic. The mean N content of catch crop residues at these sites was 33, 36 and 35?kg ha?1 yr?1 and their mean C:N ratio was 13, 17 and 28, respectively. Net mineralization was calculated with a mass balance of soil mineral N using measured inputs and outputs. Catch crop establishment enhanced annual mineralization by on average 26, 18 and 9?kg N ha?1 yr?1 respectively during the 13?C17?year period. The difference in mineralization rate between catch crop and control treatments (extra mineralization) was positive from the first year at Boigneville, whereas it was negative or nil during the first 3?C5?years at Thibie and Kerlavic. At the latter sites, the extra mineralization rate increased significantly over time at a rate of 2.0 and 2.6?kg N ha?1 yr?2. At the end of the experiment, cumulative extra mineralization represented 72%, 60% and 23% of the total N added by catch crop residues at Boigneville, Thibie and Kerlavic, respectively. Repeated catch crops significantly increased N uptake and N use efficiency by main crops at Kerlavic and Thibie, but not at Boigneville. The efficiency of catch crops in reducing N leaching persisted over the years at all sites. A model simulating C and N dynamics during catch crop decomposition was able to reproduce the pattern of extra N mineralization kinetics with the various catch crop species, but underestimated the range of variation between sites. Better predictions were obtained when C or N inputs due to catch crops were increased by 10?C57%, suggesting that the actual inputs could be markedly greater than those measured in catch crop residues. According to the model, the C:N ratio of catch crop residues largely explained differences in mineralization due to different catch crop species.  相似文献

More efficient fertilization practices could conceivably be developed if nutrient availability from manures and crop residues could be accurately predicted under field conditions. Heat units were recently found useful for describing the combined thermal and temporal relationships with papermill sludge C and N mineralization. This study was conducted to describe C and N mineralization of corn (Zea mays L. cv. ‘King 1113’), lupin (Lupinus albus L. cv. ‘ultra’), and potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. ‘russet burbank’) residues and to field test the utility of heat units in predicting these processes. Residues of each crop were applied to soil microplots in May, June, and July of 1987. Carbon mineralization was monitored by periodic capture of evolved CO2 in alkali traps. Nitrogen mineralization-immobilization processes were followed by frequent sampling for KCl extractable inorganic N. Net N mineralization from the potato residue occurred almost immediately after residue application, apparently owing to its relatively low C/N of 15/1. Net N mineralization from the corn and lupin residues began 119, 99, and 317 d after application in the May, June, and July application months, respectively. These respective times represented 2346, 1990, and 2360 degree days after application. Heat units appear to provide a mathematically simple, pragmatic approach for predicting crop residue N mineralization under field climatic conditions.  相似文献

Increased atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration will likely cause changes in plant productivity and composition that might affect soil decomposition processes. The objective of this study was to test to what extent elevated CO2 and N fertility-induced changes in residue quality controlled decomposition rates. Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) was grown in 8-l pots and exposed to two concentrations of CO2 (390 or 722 μmol mol-1) and two levels of N fertilization (1.0 or 0.25 g l-1 soil) within greenhouse chambers for 8 wks. Plants were then chemically defoliated and air-dried. Leaf, stem and root residues were assayed for total non-structural carbohydrates (TNC), lignin (LTGA), proanthocyanidins (PA), C and N. Respiration rates of an unsterilized sandy soil (Lakeland Sand) mixed with residues from the various treatments were determined using a soda lime trap to measure CO2 release. At harvest, TNC and PA concentrations were 17 to 45% higher in residues previously treated with elevated CO2 compared with controls. Leaf and stem residue LTGA concentrations were not significantly affected by either the elevated CO2 or N fertilization treatments, although root residue LTGA concentration was 30% greater in plants treated with elevated CO2. The concentration of TNC in leaf residues from the low N fertilization treatment was 2.3 times greater than that in the high N fertilization treatment, although TNC concentration in root and stem residues was suppressed 13 to 23% by the low soil N treatment. PA and LTGA concentrations in leaf, root and stem residues were affected by less than 10% by the low N fertilization treatment. N concentration was 14 to 44% lower in residues obtained from the elevated CO2 and low N fertilization treatments. In the soil microbial respiration assay, cumulative CO2 release was 10 to 14% lower in soils amended with residues from the elevated CO2 and low N fertility treatments, although treatment differences diminished as the experiment progressed. Treatment effects on residue N concentration and C:N ratios appeared to be the most important factors affecting soil microbial respiration. The results of our study strongly suggest that, although elevated CO2 and N fertility may have significant impact on post-harvest plant residue quality of cotton, neither factor is likely to substantially affect decomposition. Thus, C cycling might not be affected in this way, but via simple increases in plant biomass production. A laboratory incubation experiment with 15N labeled root and leaf residues of 3 agroforestry species (Leucaena leucocephala, Dactyladenia barteri and Flemingia macrophylla) was conducted under controlled conditions (25 C) for 56 days to quantify residue C and N mineralization and its relationship with residue quality. No uniform relation was found between the chemical composition of the above and below residues. The leucaena and dactyladenia roots contained more lignin (8 and 26% respectively) and less N (2.0 and 1.0% respectively) than the respective leaves (2 and 13% lignin and 2.9 and 1.4% N, respectively), whereas the differences between the lignin and N contents of the flemingia leaves and roots were not significant (4.6 and 3.0% lignin and 2.63 and 2.68% N, respectively). The leucaena leaves contained more polyphenols than the roots (6.4 and 3.6%), while the polyphenol content of the leaves and roots of the other residues was similar (5.0 and 5.1% for dactyladenia and 4.0 and 3.5% for flemingia).Three patterns of N mineralization could be distinguished. A first pattern, followed by residues producing the highest amounts of CO2, showed an initial immobilization of soil derived N, followed by a net release of both soil and residue derived N after 7 days of incubation. A second pattern, followed by the flemingia leaf residues which produced intermediate amounts of CO2 and had an intermediate quality, showed no significant immobilization of soil derived N, and significant mineralization of residue N. A third pattern, followed by both low quality dactyladenia residues, showed a low release of residue derived N and a continued inmobilization of soil derived N.Residue C mineralization was significantly (p<0.05) correlated with the residue lignin content, C-to-N ratio, and polyphenol-to-N ratio. The proportion of residue N mineralized (immobilized) after 56 days of incubation was significantly correlated with the residue N content (p<0.01) and the C-to-N ratio (p<0.05). The relations were quadratic, rather than linear. The ratio of the proportion of residue N mineralized (immobilized) over the proportion of residue C mineralized after 56 days was highly significantly correlated with the lignin content (p<0.01) and C-to-N (p<0.001), lignin-to-N (p<0.01), polyphenol-to-N (p<0.01) and (lignin+polyphenol)-to-N ratios (p<0.01) in a linear way. This indicates that due to the low availability of the residue C, relatively less N is immobilized for the very low quality residues ((lignin+polyphenol)-to-N ratio: 29.7) than for the residues with a relatively higher quality ((lignin+polyphenol)-to-N ratios between 3.3 and 12.5).

The application of herbicides has induced symptoms of nutrient deficiencies under some circumstances. This glasshouse study examined the effect of chlorsulfuron on the uptake and utilization of copper (Cu) in four cultivars of wheat plants (Triticum aestivum L. cvs. Kulin, Cranbrook, Gamenya and Bodallin) on a Cu-responsive soil. Application of chlorsulfuron depressed the concentration of Cu in wheat plants receiving either inadequate or adequate Cu. In plants with inadequate Cu supply, chlorsulfuron increased the severity of Cu deficiency. Shoot weight was markedly decreased by chlorsulfuron at all levels of Cu, through decreasing the number of tillers and the elongation of leaves. This decreased growth of shoots occurred prior to the effect on Cu concentration in tissues. The retranslocation of Cu in old tissues over time was unaffected by chlorsulfuron. In all wheat cultivars, the decreased growth of shoots were correlated with the concentration of Cu in the youngest fully emerged leaf blade with critical levels of 1.6−1.7 at day 25 and 0.9−1.0 μg g−1 d. wt. at day 60. The application of chlorsulfuron tended to increase the critical level at day 25 but not at day 60. In addition, Kulin seems to be most, and Cranbrook least, sensitive to chlorsulfuron. This sensitivity was associated with the sensitivity of the cultivars to Cu deficiency. It is suggested that chlorsulfuron application induces Cu deficiency in wheat plants mainly due to effects on the uptake of Cu. N mineralization, N immobilization and denitrification were determined for vetch, rye and rye-vetch cover crops using large packed soil cores. Plants were grown to maturity from seed in cores. Cores were periodically leached, allowing for quantification of NO3 and NH4 + production, and denitrification incubations were conducted before and after cover crop kill. Gas permeable tubing was buried at two depths in cores allowing for quantification of N2O in the soil profile. Cover crops assimilated most soil N prior to kill. After kill, relative rates of N mineralization were vetch > rye-vetch mixture > fallow > rye. After correcting for N mineralization from fallow cores, net N mineralization was observed in vetch and rye-vetch cores, while net N immobilization was observed in rye cores. Denitrification incubations were conducted 5, 15 and 55 days after kill, with adjustment of cores to 75% water filled pore space (WFPS). The highest denitrification was observed in vetch cores 5 days after kill, when soil NO3 and respiration rates were high. Substantially lower denitrification was observed on subsequent measurement dates and in other treatments probably due to either limited NO3 or organic carbon in the soil. On day 5, 3%, 23%, 31% and 31% of the N2O was recovered in the headspace of fallow, vetch, rye and rye-vetch cores, respectively. The rest was stored in the soil profile. In a field study using intact soil cores, denitrification rates also peaked 1 week after cover crop kill and decreased significantly thereafter. Results suggest greater potential N losses from vetch than rye or rye-vetch cover crops due to rapid N-mineralization in conjunction with denitrification and potential leaching, prior to significant crop N-assimilation. Agronomic results indicate that maize grain yields generally are higher when the crop is planted following soybean than in continuous maize cultivation in the moist savanna agroecological zones of West Africa. Many factors have been hypothesized to explain this phenomenon, including enhanced N availability and the so-called `rotational effect'. There is, however, hardly any quantitative information on the residual N benefits of promiscuous soybeans to subsequent cereal crops grown in rotation with soybean. Three IITA promiscuous soybean breeding lines and two Brazilian soybean lines were grown in 1994 and 1995 at Mokwa in the southern Guinea savanna, Nigeria, to quantify the nitrogen contribution by soybeans to a succeeding crop of maize grown in rotation with soybean for two consecutive years, 1996 and 1997 using two methods of introducing 15N into soil (fresh 15N labelling and its residual 15N) and three maize cultivars (including one cultivar with high N use efficiency) used as reference plants. The nodulating soybeans fixed between 44 and 103 kg N ha–1 of their total N and had an estimated net N balance input from fixation following grain harvest ranging from –8 to 43 kg N ha–1. Results in 1996 and in 1997 showed that maize growing after soybean had significantly higher grain yield (1.2 – 2.3-fold increase compared to maize control) except for maize cultivar Oba super 2 (8644-27) (a N-efficient hybrid). The 15N isotope dilution method was able to estimate N contribution by promiscuous soybeans to maize only in the first succeeding maize crop grown in 1996 but not in the second maize crop in 1997. The first crop of maize grown after soybean accumulated an average between 10 and 22 kg N ha–1 from soybean residue, representing 17–33% of the soybean total N ha–1. The percentage 15N derived from residue recovery in maize grown after maize was influenced by the maize cultivars. Maize crop grown after the N-efficient hybrid cultivar Oba Super 2 (844-27) had similar 15N values similar to maize grown after soybeans, confirming the ability of this cultivar to use N efficiently in low N soil due to an efficient N translocation ability. The maize crop in 1997 grown after maize had lower 15N enrichment than that grown in soybean plots, suggesting that soybean residues contributed a little to soil available N and to crop N uptake by the second maize crop. The differential mineralization and immobilization turnover of maize and soybean residues in these soils may be important and N contribution estimates in longer term rotation involving legumes and cereals may be difficult to quantify using the 15N labelling approaches. Therefore alternative methods are required to measure N release from organic residues in these cropping systems.  相似文献

Litter nutrient dynamics contribute significantly to biogeochemical cycling in forest ecosystems. We examined how site environment and initial substrate quality influence decomposition and nitrogen (N) dynamics of multiple litter types. A 2.5-year decomposition study was installed in the Oregon Coast Range and West Cascades using 15N-labeled litter from Acer macrophyllum, Picea sitchensis, and Pseudotsuga menziesii. Mass loss for leaf litter was similar between the two sites, while root and twig litter exhibited greater mass loss in the Coast Range. Mass loss was greatest from leaves and roots, and species differences in mass loss were more prominent in the Coast Range. All litter types and species mineralized N early in the decomposition process; only A. macrophyllum leaves exhibited a net N immobilization phase. There were no site differences with respect to litter N dynamics despite differences in site N availability, and litter N mineralization patterns were species-specific. For multiple litter × species combinations, the difference between gross and net N mineralization was significant, and gross mineralization was 7–20 % greater than net mineralization. The mineralization results suggest that initial litter chemistry may be an important driver of litter N dynamics. Our study demonstrates that greater amounts of N are cycling through these systems than may be quantified by only measuring net mineralization and challenges current leaf-based biogeochemical theory regarding patterns of N immobilization and mineralization.  相似文献

Background and purpose

Rapid increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration ([CO2]) may increase crop residue production and carbon: nitrogen (C:N) ratio. Whether the incorporation of residues produced under elevated [CO2] will limit soil N availability and fertilizer N recovery in the plant is unknown. This study investigated the interaction between crop residue incorporation and elevated [CO2] on the growth, grain yield and the recovery of 15N-labeled fertilizer by wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Yitpi) under controlled environmental conditions.

Methods

Residue for ambient and elevated [CO2] treatments, obtained from wheat grown previously under ambient and elevated [CO2], respectively, was incorporated into two soils (from a cereal-legume rotation and a cereal-fallow rotation) 1 month before the sowing of wheat. At the early vegetative stage 15N-labeled granular urea (10.22 atom%) was applied at 50 kg?N ha?1 and the wheat grown to maturity.

Results

When residue was not incorporated into the soil, elevated [CO2] increased wheat shoot (16 %) and root biomass (41 %), grain yield (19 %), total N uptake (4 %) and grain N removal (8 %). However, the positive [CO2] fertilization effect on these parameters was absent in the soil amended with residue. In the absence of residue, elevated [CO2] increased fertilizer N recovery in the plant (7 %), but when residue was incorporated elevated [CO2] decreased fertilizer N recovery.

Conclusions

A higher fertilizer application rate will be required under future elevated [CO2] atmospheres to replenish the extra N removed in grains from cropping systems if no residue is incorporated, or to facilitate the [CO2] fertilization effect on grain yield by overcoming N immobilization resulting from residue amendment.  相似文献

Decomposition of soybean grown under elevated concentrations of CO2 and O3   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A critical global climate change issue is how increasing concentrations of atmospheric CO2 and ground‐level O3 will affect agricultural productivity. This includes effects on decomposition of residues left in the field and availability of mineral nutrients to subsequent crops. To address questions about decomposition processes, a 2‐year experiment was conducted to determine the chemistry and decomposition rate of aboveground residues of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) grown under reciprocal combinations of low and high concentrations of CO2 and O3 in open‐top field chambers. The CO2 treatments were ambient (370 μmol mol?1) and elevated (714 μmol mol?1) levels (daytime 12 h averages). Ozone treatments were charcoal‐filtered air (21 nmol mol?1) and nonfiltered air plus 1.5 times ambient O3 (74 nmol mol?1) 12 h day?1. Elevated CO2 increased aboveground postharvest residue production by 28–56% while elevated O3 suppressed it by 15–46%. In combination, inhibitory effects of added O3 on biomass production were largely negated by elevated CO2. Plant residue chemistry was generally unaffected by elevated CO2, except for an increase in leaf residue lignin concentration. Leaf residues from the elevated O3 treatments had lower concentrations of nonstructural carbohydrates, but higher N, fiber, and lignin levels. Chemical composition of petiole, stem, and pod husk residues was only marginally affected by the elevated gas treatments. Treatment effects on plant biomass production, however, influenced the content of chemical constituents on an areal basis. Elevated CO2 increased the mass per square meter of nonstructural carbohydrates, phenolics, N, cellulose, and lignin by 24–46%. Elevated O3 decreased the mass per square meter of these constituents by 30–48%, while elevated CO2 largely ameliorated the added O3 effect. Carbon mineralization rates of component residues from the elevated gas treatments were not significantly different from the control. However, N immobilization increased in soils containing petiole and stem residues from the elevated CO2, O3, and combined gas treatments. Mass loss of decomposing leaf residue from the added O3 and combined gas treatments was 48% less than the control treatment after 20 weeks, while differences in decomposition of petiole, stem, and husk residues among treatments were minor. Decreased decomposition of leaf residues was correlated with lower starch and higher lignin levels. However, leaf residues only comprised about 20% of the total residue biomass assayed so treatment effects on mass loss of total aboveground residues were relatively small. The primary influence of elevated atmospheric CO2 and O3 concentrations on decomposition processes is apt to arise from effects on residue mass input, which is increased by elevated CO2 and suppressed by O3.  相似文献

Field experiments were carried out on a temperate soil to determine the decline rate, the stabilization in soil organic matter and the plant uptake of N from 15N-labelled crop residues. The fate of N from field pea (Pisum sativum L.) and spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) residues was followed in unplanted and planted plots and related to their chemical composition. In the top 10 cm of unplanted plots, inorganic N was immobilized after barley residue incorporation, whereas the inorganic N pool was increased during the initial 30 days after incorporation (DAI) of pea residues. Initial net mineralization of N was highly correlated to the concentrations of soluble C and N and the lignin: N ratio of residues. The contribution of residue-derived N to the inorganic N pool was at its maximum 30 DAI (10–55%) and declined to on average 5% after 3 years of decomposition.Residual organic labelled N in the top 10 cm soil declined rapidly during the initial 86 DAI for all residue types. Leaching of soluble organic materials may have contributed to this decline. At 216 DAI 72, 59 and 45% of the barley, mature pea and green pea residue N, respectively, were present in organic N-forms in the topsoil. During the 1–3 year period, residual organic labelled N from different residues declined at similar rates, mean decay constant: 0.18 yr-1. After 3 years, 45% of the barley and on average 32% of the pea residue N were present as soil organic N. The proportion of residue N remaining in the soil after 3 years of decomposition was most strongly correlated with the total and soluble N concentrations in the residue. The ratio (% inorganic N derived from residues): (% organic N derived from residues) was used as a measure of the rate residue N stabilization. From initial values of 3–7 the ratios declined to on average 1.9 and 1.6 after 2 and 3 yrs, respectively, indicating that a major part of the residue N was stabilized after 2 years of decomposition. Even though the largest proportion of residue N stabilized after 3 years was found for barley, the largest amount of residue N stabilized was found with incorporation of pea residues, since much more N was incorporated with these residues. In planted plots and after one year of decomposition, 7% of the pea and 5% of the barley residue N were recovered in perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) shoots. After 2 years the cumulative recovery of residue N in ryegrass shoots and roots was 14% for pea and 15% for barley residue N. The total uptake of non-labelled soil N after 2 years of growth was similar in the two residue treatments, but the amount of soil N taken up in each growth period varied between the treatments, apparently because the soil N immobilized during initial decomposition of residues was remineralized later in the barley than in the pea residue treatment. Balances were established for the amounts of barley and mature pea residue N remaining in the 0–10 cm soil layer and taken up in ryegrass after 2 years of decomposition. About 24% of the barley and 35% of the pea residue N were unaccounted for. Since these apparent losses are comparable to almost twice the amounts of pea and barley residue N taken up by the perennial ryegrass crop, there seems to be a potential for improved crop residue management in order to conserve nutrients in the soil-plant system.  相似文献

Current inputs of organic materials to cropped lands on sandy Alfisols and Entisols in Sahelian West Africa are insufficient to arrest soil organic matter (SOM) decline. Crop residues and green manures require proper management in order to maximize their contribution to nutrient supply and SOM maintenance. The objectives of this study were to quantify the rates of C and N mineralization from cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) green manure, cowpea residue, and millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R.Br.) residue under field conditions in Niger and to determine the effect of these organic amendments on pearl millet yield. Millet was grown (1) as sole crop, (2) as intercrop with cowpea, (3) as intercrop with cowpea that was incorporated as green manure during the second half of the growing season, (4) with incorporated cowpea residue (2000 kg ha–1), (5) with millet residue mulch (3000 kg ha–1), and (6) with N fertilizer. Carbon loss as CO2 from soil with and without organic amendment was measured three times per week during the growing season. Nitrogen fertilizer increased millet yield only in a year with a favorable rainfall distribution. Cowpea grown in intercrop with millet during the first part of the growing season and subsequently incorporated as green manure between millet rows increased millet grain yield in a year with sufficient early rainfall, which could be attributed to the rapid rate of decomposition and nutrient release during the first 3 weeks after incorporation. In a year with limited early rainfall, however, densely planted green manure cowpeas competed for water and nutrients with the growing millet crop. Incorporated cowpea residue and millet residue mulch increased millet yield. Surface applied millet residue had high rates of decomposition only during the first 3 days after a rainfall event, with 34% of the millet residue C lost as CO2 in one rainy season. Recovery of undecomposed millet residue at the end of the rainy season was related to presence or absence of termites, but not to seasonal C loss. Millet residue mulch increased soil organic C content of this sandy Alfisol in Niger. Cowpea and millet residues had a greater effect on SOM and millet yield than cowpea green manure due to their greater rate of application and slower rate of decomposition.  相似文献
