This study is focused on the development, implementation and evaluation of an environmental education programme for secondary education students. The programme was entitled ‘Τhe effects of fire on the soil system’ and it was implemented during the school period of 2008. Twenty-four (24) students (aged from 15 to 20) coming from Lidoriki Secondary School (Central Greece) participated in the programme, which was based on Project Method. The programme consisted of one theoretical part (achievement of cognitive and affective goals) and one experimental part (achievement of cognitive and psychomotor goals). Initial, formative and summative assessments were implemented during the course of the programme, by means of questionnaires, observation of students’ teamwork and examination of their work sheets. The questionnaire analysis highlighted students’ misconceptions regarding the subject, revealed positive changes in students’ attitudes as a result of their participation in the programme, as well as satisfactory results concerning the acquired knowledge and skills. The experimental results were of significant scientific and educational value.  相似文献

Croatia never had a separate vocation (occupation) of a health educator. Health education is one of the main tasks in the long tradition of preventive work of doctors-school medicine specialists. Additionally, in the school curriculum in the Republic of Croatia the health-educational contents are integrated into various subjects, and are conducted by teachers. However, there are requests to introduce a new subject into schools called Health Education. We asked physicians of school medicine their opinion on the introduction of this new subject. 30% of the physicians were dissatisfied with the current condition, 10% were satisfied, while there were no very satisfied school medicine doctors. They believe that health education goals are oriented solely to passing on knowledge (facts), while efforts are not done to change habits and attitudes of young people. They recognize themselves as persons mostly involved in health education in schools. Half of the school medicine doctors believe that the school curriculum should contain both a separate subject as well as integration of health education into other subjects. Before introducing any changes into healthcare or education system, it is necessary to examine the attitudes of students and parents, to direct the changes towards the promotion of the cooperation between the healthcare system, education, civil society, school and community where investing into the health of young people is done through comprehensive and holistic programmes.  相似文献

Analytical study of large-scale nonlinear neural circuits is a difficult task. Here we analyze the function of neural systems by probing the fuzzy logical framework of the neural cells’ dynamical equations. Although there is a close relation between the theories of fuzzy logical systems and neural systems and many papers investigate this subject, most investigations focus on finding new functions of neural systems by hybridizing fuzzy logical and neural system. In this paper, the fuzzy logical framework of neural cells is used to understand the nonlinear dynamic attributes of a common neural system by abstracting the fuzzy logical framework of a neural cell. Our analysis enables the educated design of network models for classes of computation. As an example, a recurrent network model of the primary visual cortex has been built and tested using this approach.  相似文献

Zoos exude a certain self‐confidence regarding their roles as education providers. Indeed, the education outputs of zoos are, at face value, pretty impressive, with most investing in learning opportunities for leisure visitors, education groups and in some cases, as part of their in situ programs. However, these outputs are not necessarily reliable indicators of the educational achievements of zoos. Quantity does not necessarily equate to quality, just as outputs do not necessarily lead to outcomes. Zoo‐accreditation organizations such as the AZA and EAZA offer us clear insight into the strategic vision underpinning the education goals for zoo visitors; a heightened appreciation of the value of biodiversity and a connectedness with the natural world. Unsurprisingly, most zoos have educational goals that ally neatly with the vision of their respective accreditation body. Consequently, we are left with fairly narrow, top‐down educational goals. This does not necessarily sit well with what we know about the unpredictability of “free choice” learning in environments such as zoos and aquariums, or what is known about public science communication. Research that seeks to explore the impacts of zoo visits often focuses on evaluating performance based on educational goals and the findings are used as a means of providing evidence of institutional achievement. However, any visitor outcome that falls outside of this narrow range could well be missed by the research. The size of the liver and spleen of 32 patients was assessed by four clinicians from a clinical examination and by four radiologists from a plain radiograph of the abdomen. The latter assessment was found to be subject to less variation than the former, particularly in regard to the liver. Large livers and spleens were more easily seen radiologically than small ones. Most of the variation among the radiologists arose because of the 6% and 24% of cases in which the liver and spleen, respectively, were poorly seen on the radiograph. It is concluded that a plain radiograph of the abdomen, including the diaphragm and with the costal margin indicated, is a useful adjunct to clinical examination.  相似文献

Model Biologists     
The nature of problems and problem solving in relation to current developments in science education are discussed. The paper deals particularly with a suggested methodology for teaching and subsequent assessment of group problem-solving activities with pupils of 15 years of age in schools in the UK. The strategy described and tested is based on a schedule given to pupils which provides them with details of a series of logical stages which might be adopted in a problem-solving approach. The schedule is used as the basis for the assessment instrument which is outlined in detail, giving criteria for grading performance. Analysis of the findings from trials suggests that this approach could form the basis of a model for teaching and assessment of group performance in problem-solving activities in science.  相似文献

The documentation of biological control agents targeting arthropods in the United States has historically been subject to less regulation relative to weed biological control releases. This study reviews publicly available databases to track environmental releases of biological control agents targeting arthropods in the United States. It then presents available data for the states with the most releases between 1962 and 2005: Hawaii, California and Florida. These data indicate a clear decline in rates of introduction since 1982 or 1994, depending on the source. Existing record-keeping systems offer incomplete or inconsistent data for evaluation because they were designed with limited goals, attempt to capture excessive detail and are thus impractical, or are insufficiently resourced. Existing databases cannot be used to answer meaningful questions regarding non-target effects of introduced control agents. Current databases are inappropriately designed and insufficiently resourced to meet today's research and regulatory needs. Mass segmentation in mammograms is a challenging task due to problems such as low contrast, ill-defined, fuzzy or spiculated borders, and the presence of intensity inhomogeneities. These facts complicate the development of computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems to assist radiologists. In this paper, a novel mass segmentation algorithm for mammograms based on robust multiscale feature-fusion, and automatic estimation based maximum a posteriori (MAP) method is presented. The proposed segmentation technique consists of mainly four stages: a dynamic contrast improvement scheme applied to a selected region-of-interest (ROI), background-influence correction by template matching, detection of mass candidate points by prior and posterior probabilities based on robust multiscale feature-fusion, and final delineation of the mass region by a MAP scheme. This segmentation method is applied to 480 ROI masses that used ground truth from two radiologists. To compare its effectiveness with the state-of-the-art segmentation methods, three statistical metrics are employed. The experimental results indicate that the developed methods can reliably segment ill-defined or spiculated lesions when compared to other algorithms. Its integration in a CAD system may result in an improved aid to radiologists.  相似文献

It is postulated that in neurotic persons who have unrealistic feelings of superiority and inferiority the two are interdependent. This is a departure from the concept of previous observers that either one or the other is primary and its opposite is overcompensation. The author postulates considerable parallelism, with equal importance for each. He submits that the neurotic person forms two logic-resistant compartments for the two opposed self-estimates and that treatment which makes inroads of logic upon one compartment, simultaneously does so upon the other. Two examples are briefly reported.The neurotic benefits sought in exaggeration of capability are the same as those sought in insistence upon inferiority: Presumption of superiority at once bids for approbation and delivers the subject from the need to prove himself worthy of it in dreaded competition; exaggeration of incapability baits sympathy and makes competition unnecessary because failure is conceded.Some of the characteristics of abnormal self-estimates that distinguish them from normal are: Preoccupation with self, resistance to logical explanation of personality problems, inconsistency in reasons for beliefs in adequacy on the one hand and inadequacy on the other, unreality, rationalization of faults, and difficulty and vacillation in the selection of adequate goals.  相似文献

Symbolic logic, as used in the formal theory of scientific explanation proposed by Hempel and Oppenheim, has been suggested as the basis for automated medical diagnosis. In human autopsy pathology the determination of cause-and-effect relationships is a major area subject to logical analysis. We propose a modification of the Hempel-Oppenheim schema in which the logical relationships must only be satisfied “much” of the time, as determined by binomial significance tests. The analysis employs “certainty levels” logic with a more limited consistency requirement than classical logic. The analysis is applied to a series of 181 autopsied patients with leukemia in an attempt to determine a possible role of chemotherapeutic agents in the etiology of pulmonary edema. Among 51 patients who had received cytosine arabinoside (Ara-C) within 30 days of death, there was significantly more unexplained moderate or massive pulmonary edema than among patients with no or remote therapy (p<0.001). The results suggest that a symbolic logical analysis combined with a binomial significance test can elucidate cause-and-effect relationships observed at autopsy, especially when there are multiple possible explanations for the same effect.  相似文献

We present a practical activity focusing on two main goals: to give learners the opportunity to experience how the scientific method works and to increase their knowledge about enzymes in everyday situations. The exercise consists of determining the amylase activity of commercial detergents. The methodology is based on a qualitative assay using a colorimetric process. Quantitative results are also obtained by measuring the halo formed. This activity is suitable for and adaptable to learners at different levels of education: primary school, secondary education or even for pre-service teachers, which is the group the version described in this paper was intended for. This laboratory activity was designed to include the scientific method as a learning outcome. This was especially important in pre-service teachers, as increasing scientific literacy is one of the primary goals of science education. Through the activity, students also learn about micro-organisms and their applications in their daily lives, which is one of the tenets of Science–Technology–Society–Environment programs. A case study was conducted with a group of learners made up of 75 pre-service teachers from Universitat Rovira i Virgili in Tarragona, in order to verify whether this lab activity is well designed and can be satisfactorily implemented.  相似文献

大学生素质教育要求新时代的大学生不仅要学习理论知识,更重要的是培养科学思维并掌握应用技能。我校微生物学课程教学中探索了以创新实践为主要内容的模式改革,其中"理论—技能—创新实践"同步训练的创新模式,是以将参与创新实践计入期末成绩的形式"强迫"学生进入实验室参与科研项目。实施中我们以"教师—研究生—创新小组"交互学习的方式,任课教师制定规则与目标,研究生帮助创新项目的选题、研究方案设计及实施指导,创新小组依照目标参与研究生的科研课题,最后完成创新实践并获得一定比例的成绩。实践证实创新实践教学对促进学生的理论课程学习、科学思维培养以及创新意识训练等方面都有积极的促进作用,是大学生素质教育的一种实用且高效的教学模式。  相似文献

The statement is substantiated that the main subject of epidemiology, determining its specificity, is the morbidity of the population, and the content of the epidemiological goals and methods are disclosed. From an administrative perspective, this article investigates equity issues in dance education, and current challenges and opportunities for leadership in postsecondary dance programs involved in teacher education and certification. Although dance education is varied in content and environment, much is shared in terms of common goals for gender equity, curricular equity, status of dance education, and diversity in the field. The author urges dance educators and administrators to actively emphasize and act on commonly shared goals, rather than focusing on differences that have historically served to separate the field. The article provides recommendations and strategies for advocacy and development focused on enduring values of dance education rooted in art making, creativity, experimentation, and the importance of artistic expression in education.  相似文献
