Summary The epidermal cell layer of the apical end of the ceras was investigated in two species of aeolid nudibranchs. Based on cellular inclusions, mostly two cell types were found: mucoid and ellipsoid-vacuolate cells. Mucoid cells ofCoryphella rufibranchialis have large heterogeneous and fibrillar secretory granules whereas inAeolidia papillosa, the granules are homogeneous, but vary in electron density from one cell to another. Ellipsoid-vacuolate cells contained large quantities of small vacuoles with an included ellipsoidal structure. Both species contained very numerous ellipsoid-vacuolate cells. Secretory granules and ellipsoid-vacuoles appear to arise from the Golgi apparatus and these contents stain with PAS, suggesting a polysaccharide composition. Mucoid cells contained both secretory granules and ellipsoid-vacuoles which may arise from the same Golgi apparatus.  相似文献

Lobo‐da‐Cunha, A., Oliveira, E., Alves, Â., Coelho, R. and Calado, G. 2010. Light and electron microscopic study of the anterior oesophagus of Bulla striata (Mollusca, Opisthobranchia). —Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 91 : 125–138. The anterior oesophagus of Bulla striata was investigated with light and electron microscopy. In the most anterior region, the ridges of the oesophageal wall are covered by a ciliated columnar epithelium forming large apical blebs which are released into the lumen, an activity that is particularly intense in the oesophageal pouch. In the last two‐thirds of the anterior oesophagus, the epithelium is covered with microvilli embedded in a cuticle, but apocrine secretion and cilia are absent. Subepithelial secretory cells are very abundant in the oesophageal wall, except in the roof of the pouch. They have a long neck that crosses the epithelium, whereas the cell body containing the nucleus is embedded in the connective tissue. Large electron‐lucent secretory vesicles and many Golgi stacks fill most of their cytoplasm. The histochemical and cytochemical assays show that these cells secrete acid mucopolysaccharides. With the current and future studies we aim to obtain data for the establishment of relationships between morphofunctional features of the digestive system and food types in cephalaspideans. Additionally, the new data about the oesophageal pouch of B. striata may be useful for the establishment of eventual homologies with the oesophageal diverticula of other opisthobranchs.  相似文献

The relationship between three genera considered basal in the Chromodorididae (Cadlina, Tyrinna, Cadlinella) has not yet been resolved by traditional morphological means. Here we examined the sperm ultrastructure of Tyrinna nobilis, Tyrinna evelinae, Cadlina flavomaculata and Cadlina cf. nigrobranchiata, with the expectation of finding phylogenetically informative characters. No Tyrinna or Cadlina species showed sperm similarities to Cadlinella. Both Cadlina species and Tyrinna nobilis (but not T. evelinae) exhibited coarse striations in the acrosomal pedestal. The putative fibers that occurred between the coarse striations of the pedestal are condensed into a layer in Cadlina and Tyrinna, but not in other species that also have coarse striations (Gymnodoris), and may constitute evidence for a close relationship. Tyrinna evelinae possessed fine acrosomal striations, which was shared with other Chromodorididae, Actinocyclidae and the cryptobranchs Rostanga and Aphelodoris. We also examined the sperm ultrastructure of ‘Chromodorisambiguus, an animal which has shown molecular affinities to species of Cadlina, and not Chromodoris. The sperm of ‘C.’ ambiguus did not exhibit the typical Cadlina characteristics, but also showed important differences to other investigated Chromodoris species.  相似文献

Summary The nudibranch molluscMelibe leonina is repellant to some seastars and fish, but not to crab predators. Distinctive subepidermal glands, which are particularly abundant within the cerata and dorsal wall of the oral hood, can be easily seen within the translucent body wall of this slug. The glands can be individually discharged by touching the overlying epidermis and the collected secretion is repugnant to seasters. Ultrastructural analysis reveals that each repugnatorial gland is composed of two types of secretory cell encased by cross-striated muscle. Storage of secretory product within a single, large, intracellular vacuole and cytological features of the muscle investment are consistent with a rapid, all-or-none secretion event, as observed in live tissue. The secretory cells empty into a short duct that opens by a pore. The pore is surrounded by ciliated sensory cells that probably act as mechanoreceptors triggering gland discharge. I argue that one of the two secretory cells releases defensive chemical, whereas the second may produce a protein-rich mucin.  相似文献

The Chromodorididae is a large and colourful family of nudibranch sea slugs distributed across the world's oceans. Most diversity is centred in the Indo-Pacific, but several genera are present in multiple ocean basins, or across regions separated by biogeographical barriers. The monophyly of these widespread genera had not been tested previously. We used 18S rDNA, 16S rDNA and COI sequence data to generate a molecular phylogeny for this group. We recovered evidence of paraphyly or polyphyly in all of the widespread genera examined ( Hypselodoris , Mexichromis , Chromodoris and Glossodoris ). East Atlantic Hypselodoris and west Atlantic + east Pacific Mexichromis species were more closely related to each other than they were to their Indo-Pacific congeners. The addition of Southern Ocean species of Digidentis demonstrated an interesting alternative to this relationship, becoming the sister group for the east Atlantic Hypselodoris on the basis of 16S and 18S data, but not COI data. Sister group relationships were recovered for most monotypic or enigmatic genera. Ardeadoris is linked to Glossodoris , as is Diversidoris ; Pectenodoris is sister to the Indo-Pacific Mexichromis clade, and Verconia is the sister to Noumea haliclona . Controversy surrounding the placement of the three most basal genera was only partially resolved. Using Actinocyclus to root the mitochondrial trees, Cadlinella was the unsupported sister to the Chromodorididae (excluding Cadlina ), and Tyrinna occupied a relatively basal position, although this also did not receive significant statistical support. Adding nuclear 18S data gave support for Cadlina as the sister group to the rest of the Chromodorididae s.s. Otherwise, like previous molecular studies, mitochondrial genes supported an alternative position for Cadlina (with other dorid genera).  相似文献

A new species of Melibe is described based on two specimens collected in Florida. This new species is well differentiated morphologically and genetically from other species of Melibe studied to date. The four residue deletions in the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 protein found in all previously sequenced tropical species of Melibe sequenced (and Melibe rosea) are also present in this new species. These deletions do not appear to affect important structural components of this protein but might have fitness implications. This paper provides the first confirmed record of Melibe in the tropical western Atlantic Ocean.  相似文献

Summary The fine structure of oyster leucocytes resembles to a great extent, that of typical eucaryotic cells. Organelles which have been described for the first time in this report are light granules, dense granules, protocentriole and X structure. Light microscopy reveals two morphological types of oyster leucocytes: agranular and granular. Based upon nuclear morphology and cytoplasmic compositions revealed in electron microscopy, at least three types of agranular and one type of granular cells are recognized. In the Giemsa-stained preparations, granular leucocytes exhibit three distinct types of cytoplasmic granules: refractile, dark blue, and pink, which presumably correspond to light granules Type A, B, and C seen in the electron micrographs. A granular leucocyte may contain one or more types of granules. Cytochemical investigations show that oyster leucocytes contain at least three hydrolytic enzymes: non-specific esterases, acid, and alkaline phosphatase. The latter two enzymes constitute 63% of the enzyme activity detected. These intracellular enzymes may be associated with the light granules and/or lysosome-like bodies. It is also demonstrated that the granular leucocyte population is significantly higher (P<0.001) in the oysters experimentally infected with Bacillus mycoides (72.19±4.71%) as contrasted with that of the controls (37.18±4.48%).Leucocytes in progressive stages of degeneration are also described.Contribution No. 71 from Marine Research Laboratory, University of Connecticut. The initial phase of this investigation was carried out at the Department of Zoology, Rutgers, The State University, New Brunswick, New Jersey, and supported by Public Health Service Research Grant AI-00781 from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the National Institute of Health, awarded to Dr. L. Although variance in life history parameters is well known from comparisons among broad phylogenetic groups of marine invertebrates, there is still an outstanding need to increase empirical studies that compare closely related species. If the species under study share a recent common ancestor and developmental strategy, there is an opportunity to contrast maternal investment against interspecific variation while controlling for evolutionary distance. Furthermore, when these species co-occur, it allows for exploration of potential character displacement. We examined egg size and other factors related to reproduction in four closely related species, co-occurring nudibranchs belonging to the monophyletic Chromodoris planar spawning clade. The duration of oviposition appeared to be conserved and may be phylogenetically constrained in these four co-occurring species. In contrast, egg size differed significantly among species, but was not influenced by parental body length or position within the egg mass for any of the species. The number of egg mass whorls also varied, but did not correspond to the interspecific differences in parental body length. These results suggest that some significant differences exist among these sympatric Chromodoris species that may be candidate traits for character displacement. These characters would need to be re-measured in geographic areas where the studied Chromodoris species do not co-occur.  相似文献

Cell organization of a multinuclear pelobiont Pelomyxa prima has been studied at the light and electron microscopic levels. Motile individuals demonstrate a characteristic drop-like or pyriform shape and reach 550 microkm in length. The cell cover is represented by a well-developed, morphologically differentiated glycocalyx 80-100 nm thick. The cytoplasm contains many structural vacuoles. The nuclei are of vertical type, numbering up to several nuclei in large individuals. Numerous cytoplasmic microtubules are associated with the external membrane of the nuclear envelope. Separate non-motile flagella are distributed throughout the cell surface, being more numerous in the posterior body end and uroidal zone of the protist. Basal bodies of the flagella are extremely long, being deeply immersed into the cytoplasm. These bodies are surrounded by a muff of electron-dense material, with numerous microtubules radiating from it. A compact bundle of microtubules starts from the base of a basal body axially into the cytoplasm. Besides, a band-like lateral microtubular rootlet is present. The number of microtubules in the axoneme of undulipodia is unstable. Neither mitochondria, nor Golgi complex were found. Two species of bacterial endocytobionts are present in the cytoplasm in considerable numbers.  相似文献

The oesophagus and crop epithelium of Aplysia depilans consist in a single layer of columnar cells with apical microvilli, and some of them also possess cilia. Cell membrane invaginations, small vesicles, multivesicular bodies and many dense lysosomes were observed in the apical region of the cytoplasm. In most cells, a very large lipid droplet was observed above the nucleus and a smaller one was frequently found below the nucleus; glycogen granules are also present. Considering these ultrastructural features, it seems that these cells collect nutritive substances from the lumen by endocytosis, digest them in the apical lysosomes and store the resulting products. The cell bodies of mucus secreting flask-shaped cells are subepithelial in the oesophagus and intraepithelial in the crop. Histochemistry methods showed that the secretion stored in these cells contains acidic polysaccharides. Secretory vesicles with thin electron-dense filaments scattered in an electron-lucent background fill most of these cells, and the basal nucleus is surrounded by dilated rough endoplasmic reticulum cisternae containing small tubular structures. Considering the relatively low number of secretory cells, mucus production cannot be high. Moreover, since protein secreting cells were not observed in either oesophagus or crop, extracellular digestion in the lumen of these anterior segments of the digestive tract most probably depend on the enzymes secreted by the salivary and digestive glands.  相似文献

Recently collected specimens of Armodoris from McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, were morphologically examined and sequenced. Comparison between this new material and literature sources revealed that it belongs to an undescribed species, Armodoris anudeorum. Although this new species is externally very similar to Armodoris antarctica (the only previously known species of Armodoris), these two species differ in several details of their external morphology, and particularly in their reproductive anatomy and radular morphology. This is the second known species of Armodoris; thus, this paper doubles the known diversity of this exclusively Antarctic group.  相似文献
