A relationship exists among the calculated rate of metabolism of an animal enclosed in a chamber, chamber volume and air flow rate. A "critical" flow rate, defined as the minimal flow rate that produces a complete mixture of chamber gases, characterizes each chamber/animal combination. At flow rates below the critical flow rate, calculated rates of metabolism decrease with flow rate and approach zero as flow rate approaches zero. These calculated rates are unreliable estimates of rate of metabolism. At flow rates greater than the critical flow rate, calculated rates of metabolism are independent of flow rate because a reciprocal relationship exists between flow rate and the differential in oxygen content found between the air entering and exiting the chamber; they represent an accurate estimate of the animal's rate of metabolism under the conditions to which the animal is exposed. The critical flow rate increases with chamber volume, the animal's rate of metabolism and with any factor that increases rate of metabolism, including body mass, activity and in endotherms ambient temperatures below thermoneutrality, although chamber volume is its single most important determinant. Some evasions of the critical flow rate are discussed.  相似文献

Metabolic rate, heart rate and respiratory rate of three adult moose were monitored simultaneously on selected days between January 1982 and October 1983. Heart rate was successfully monitored using two types of implanted radio transmitters. Metabolic rate was significantly (P less than 0.001) correlated with heart rate for individual animals (r = 0.94-0.98). The relationship was best described by an exponential equation. A mean weighted equation predicted metabolic rate within 9% of individual equations. In adult moose cows, heart rate was a more reliable predictor of energy expenditure than respiratory rate.  相似文献

Neural messengers affect Drosophila heart rate. Serotonin increases larval, pupal, and adult heart rate. Octopamine and dopamine are inactive in larva, decrease pupal rate, and increase adult heart rate. Acetylcholine and nicotine decrease larval and pupal heart rate, while acetylcholine decreases and nicotine increases adult heart rate. Muscarine decreases pupal heart rate, but is inactive in larva and adult. GABA is inactive in larva and adult, but decreases pupal heart rate. Glutamate is inactive in larva and pupa, but decreases adult heart rate. Proctolin decreases heart rate in all three stages. Caffeine acts only to decrease adult heart rate.  相似文献

本文报道了两种土壤水分条件下羊草明呼吸速率与光照和温度的关系,以及暗呼吸速率与温度的关系。结果表明,羊草的明呼吸速率与光强呈非线性函数关系。在低光强下,明呼吸速率随光强升高而有较快的增加;随着光强的增高,其增加速度减慢。在温度低于羊草光合的高温补偿点的条件下,明呼吸速率在一定温度范围内随温度升高而增大;当温度达到一定限度时,有一个下降阶段,而后又回升。羊草的暗呼吸速率随温度增加而升高,且在一定限度内,其升高速度随温度增高而加快。当土壤干旱时,明呼吸速率显著降低,而暗呼吸速率仅略有减小。  相似文献

The neutral rate of allelic substitution is analyzed for a class-structured population subject to a stationary stochastic demographic process. The substitution rate is shown to be generally equal to the effective mutation rate, and under overlapping generations it can be expressed as the effective mutation rate in newborns when measured in units of average generation time. 授粉方式对铁皮石斛种质座果及种子萌发的影响   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
为进行铁皮石斛(Dendrobium officinale)的良种选育和种苗生产,对46个铁皮石斛种质进行人工授粉试验,研究了不同授粉方式的授粉成功率、座果率和种子的萌发能力。结果表明,4种授粉方式的授粉成功率明显不同,不同种质间的授粉成功率可达100%,且座果率普遍较高。只有31.3%的种质可以成功自花授粉,且座果率相差较大。同株异花授粉和种质内异株授粉的成功率和座果率均介于上述二者之间。授粉后所得种子的萌发率和萌发速度在4种授粉方式间也呈现与授粉成功率和座果率一致的趋势。这表明在铁皮石斛种质中存在自交不亲和现象,因此以不同产地来源的铁皮石斛种质为亲本进行人工授粉,可大大提高授粉的成功率和座果率,以及后代种子的萌发能力。  相似文献

本文研究茶叶品种和质量、提取剂种类和萃取溶剂量对咖啡因和茶多酚提取得率、提取率和纯度的影响,结果表明:茶叶质量高,咖啡因和茶多酚的含量、得率和纯度就高。95%乙醇提取咖啡因和茶多酚的得率、提取率和纯度最高。1%氧化钙水溶液单纯提取咖啡因的得率、提取率和纯度较高。增加萃取次数和萃取溶剂量可提高咖啡因和茶多酚的得率,对产品纯度没有影响。  相似文献

I explore the relationship between metabolism and personality by establishing how selection acts on metabolic rate and risk-taking in the context of a trade-off between energy and predation. Using a simple time budget model, I show that a high resting metabolic rate is not necessarily associated with a high daily energy expenditure. The metabolic rate that minimizes the time spent foraging does not maximize the net gain rate while foraging, and it is not always advantageous for animals to have a higher metabolic rate when food availability is high. A model based on minimizing the ratio of mortality rate to net gain rate is used to determine how a willingness to take risks should be correlated with metabolic rate. My results establish that it is not always advantageous for animals to take greater risks when metabolic rate is high. When foraging intensity and metabolic rate coevolve, I show that in a particular case different combinations of foraging intensity and metabolic rate can have equal fitness.  相似文献

Production rate is an important parameter in the design of efficient protein A affinity chromatography processes for purifying recombinant monoclonal antibodies. A simple equation was derived that expresses production rate in terms of flow rate and column length. Changes in flow rate and column length will not affect the antibody and are therefore easily varied for bioprocess applications. In the equation, production rate depends on dynamic capacity, which can be expressed as a function of the load flow rate and column length. The only empirical data needed for production rate optimization is the relationship of dynamic capacity to load flow rate and column length, which was quickly determined by using an on-line assay. The optimal production rate was found at a high flow rate, a low column length, and a low dynamic capacity, which has several implications for using high production rate protein A affinity chromatography for antibody manufacturing.  相似文献

ProjectThere is limited literature concerning the effect of urinary flow rate on mercury excretion at low-level exposure. The aim of the present study is to examine the influence of urinary flow rate on mercury excretion in children. Also of interest is the influence of flow rate on creatinine excretion and creatinine-corrected mercury, which arisearises with spot urine samples.ProcedureA substudy of the New England Children's Amalgam Trial collected pairs of urine samples from children aged 10–16 years: a timed overnight collection and a spot daytime sample collected the following day. These samples were analyzed for mercury and creatinine concentration. Regression analysis was used to model the effect of urinary flow rate in the timed overnight samples. A paired t-test compared concentrations and creatinine-corrected mercury between overnight and daytime samples.ResultsCreatinine excretion rate (mg/h) increased significantly with urinary flow rate (mL/h), whereas creatinine concentration (g/L) decreased with flow rate. We found a non-significant increase in mercury excretion rate (ng/h) with flow rate, and mercury concentration decreased with flow rate. Mercury and creatinine concentrations were significantly higher in the overnight compared to daytime samples. For creatinine-corrected mercury, no significant impact of urinary flow rate was found.ConclusionsAlthough the creatinine excretion rate, and probably the mercury excretion rate, increased with urinary flow rate, the mercury/creatinine ratio seemed relatively unaffected by urinary flow rate.  相似文献

The embryo culture in vitro response was examined among ten rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars and 26 cross combinations to evaluate the correlation between callus induction rate and differentiation rate with plantlet regeneration rate, the influence of parents to hybrid Fl embryo culture in vitro as well as the cytoplasmic effects. Plantlet regeneration rate was used as the product of callus production and regeneration capacity. The ten pure-lines, the five F1s and their reciprocal hybrid as well as the ten F1s among the ten lines were evaluated for callus production and regeneration capaticy. Significant variation was observed among the 36 genotypes in callus induction rate, callus differentiation rate and plantlet regeneration rate on embryo culture in vitro. The positive correlation between general callus induction rate and differentiation rate with plantlet regeneration rate was significant. There was a similar trend for callus induction rate between maternal parents and Fis during mature embryo culture in vitro. However, parent-offspring correlation for callus differentiation rate and plantlet regeneration rate were nonsignificant. Whether cytoplasmic effects for embryo culture response exist among the six pure-lines was examined py the differences between reciprocal F1 hybrids. The extent of cytoplasmic effects depended on cross combination.  相似文献

A clonal derivative of a transfectant of the SP2/O myeloma cell line producing a chimeric monoclonal antibody was maintained in steady-state, continuous culture at dilution rates ranging from 0.21 to 1.04 day(-1). The steady-state values for nonviable and total cell concentrations increased as the dilution rate decreased, while the viable cell concentration was roughly independent of the dilution rate. At steady state, the specific growth rate increased and the specific death rate decreased as the dilution rate increased. The maximum specific growth rate was 1.15 day(-1). Antibody production was growth associated and the specific rate of antibody production increased linearly as the specific growth rate increased.  相似文献

Norwegian Landrace gilts were inseminated on the second day of their second oestrus and slaughtered 28 to 34 days after insemination. The number of corpora lutea (ovulation rate) and normal embryos was counted and the embryonic survival rate was calculated for the 306 pregnant gilts. Mean (+/-S.D.) ovulation rate, number of normal embryos and embryonic survival rate were 14.17+/-2.48, 10.55+/-3.30 and 74.8%+/-20.7%, respectively. The significant (P<0.001) curvilinear regression of embryonic survival rate on ovulation rate gives a maximum embryonic survival rate at 13.2 ovulations. Increased ovulation rate gives increased number of normal embryos up to 18.1 ovulations. Ovulation rate should be considered when assessing factors affecting embryonic survival in pigs.  相似文献

The rate of protein degradation was estimated in several regions of rat brain at various ages by subtracting the rate of accumulation of protein from the rate of synthesis. The rate of degradation in cerebral hemisphere, which was 1.3%/h at 2 days of age, declined steadily with age, approaching the synthesis rate is about 30 days of age (0.8%/h). Degradation rates in the pons medulla, mid-brain and spinal cord were of a similar order to that in the cerebral hemisphere. The cerebellum had an exceptionally high rate of degradation in young rats, 1.9%/h at 2 days of age, which complemented its high rates of synthesis and accumulation. The degradation rate in the young was 2-2.5 times the rate in older rats and was approx. 65% of the synthesis rate during the more active phase of growth. The rapid accumulation of protein in the nervous system during the first week post partum was accompanied by high rates of breakdown, and was the result of a relatively small difference between that high rate of degradation and an even higher synthesis rate.  相似文献

A major question about the mechanism of the myosin ATPase is how much of the fluorescence change which accompanies the binding of ATP to myosin is due to the conformational change induced by ATP and how much is due to the subsequent hydrolysis of ATP in the initial Pi burst. Several laboratories have suggested that the maximal rate of the fluorescence change represents the rate of the irreversible conformational change induced by ATP. In the present study, the rate of irreversible ATP binding, the rate of the initial Pi burst, and the rate of the fluorescence enhancement were compared under varied conditions. The results show that: 1) the fluorescence enhancement is mainly due to the hydrolysis of ATP in the initial Pi burst rather than to the conformational change induced by the binding of ATP; 2) the rate of the initial Pi burst is considerably slower than the rate of irreversible ATP binding at high ATP concentration; 3) the rate of the initial Pi burst is almost the same as the rate of the fluorescence enhancement. Therefore, the maximum rate of the fluorescence enhancement represents the rate of the initial Pi burst rather than the rate of the conformational change induced by ATP binding.  相似文献

Subjects in this experiment viewed a stressful film and then received one of five treatments: (a) practice at increasing heart rate without feedback, (b) practice at decreasing heart rate without feedback, (c) practice at increasing heart rate with feedback, (d) practice at decreasing heart rate with feedback, or (e) a control condition. Subjects then returned on the following day, practiced controlling heart rate again (or sat quietly, for subjects in the control condition), and then viewed the stressful film again. Heart-rate results indicated that subjects in both feedback groups manifested tonic decreases in heart rate from the first viewing of the film to the second, whereas subjects in both of the no-feedback groups manifested no changes in heart rate between viewings, and subjects in the control condition manifested increases in heart rate between viewings. However, all five groups of subjects displayed phasic increases in heart rate during specific stressors in the film during both viewings. The tonic changes in heart rate noted between viewings of the film for the feedback groups were not accompanied by parallel changes in electrodermal activity or respiration rate. Self-report ratings of subjects' beliefs about ability to control heart rate were significantly correlated with the tonic changes in heart rate that were noted between viewings of the stressful film.  相似文献

Measurements of oxygen consumption and heart rate showed that the range of variation in metabolic rate for any given heart rate in fish is too wide for any significant correlation to be used as a measure of metabolism as in some other vertebrates. By defining the maximum oxygen pulse a precise relationship can be established between maximum metabolic rate and heart rate. Morphological parameters, such as hyphal growth rate, tip formation rate, tip extension rate and branch formation rate, of Mortierella alpina have been measured using a flow-through chamber under 25 different combinations of carbon and nitrogen concentrations. Morphological parameters were influenced not by C/N ratio but by carbon concentration in the medium. Specific rates of hyphal growth and tip formation both remained constant at a low carbon concentration of 5 g/l. Tip extension rate from one tip was 60 microm tip(-1) h(-1) at a carbon concentration below 15 g/l, and the branching formation rate was independent of carbon concentration. Tip extension rate was a function of specific hyphal growth rate, which in turn was linearly proportional to the specific tip formation rate, demonstrating that tip extension rate was exponentially proportional to the specific tip formation rate. Branch formation rate per hyphal element remained unchanged even at tip extension rates lower than 60 microm tip(-1) h(-1) and at specific hyphal growth rates lower than 0.83 h(-1), but decreased drastically at higher rates of tip extension and hyphal growth.  相似文献
