Reticulitermes urbis is a recently described termite species that has probably been introduced into Western Europe where it has been found exclusively in urban areas. However, little is known about the geographic distribution and origin of R. urbis. This study was undertaken to determine whether this species was introduced from the Balkans. A parsimony network did not show any association between mtDNA haplotypes and geographic regions suggesting that western European populations were the result of human-mediated dispersion. Variation patterns of the COI and COII regions as well as microsatellites showed that the genetic diversity of Western European colonies was lower than for colonies collected in the Balkans, suggesting that the introduced populations suffered from a founder effect. As observed in the introduced populations of R. flavipes, all colonies of R. urbis had an extended-family structure with several reproductives. These results support the scenario that this termite was introduced into Western Europe.  相似文献

Hybridization, both within and between taxa, can be an important evolutionary stimulus for bioinvasions. Novel intra-taxon hybridizations may arise either between formerly allopatric introduced lineages, or between native and introduced lineages. The latter can occur following a cryptic invasion of a non-native lineage, such as the nineteenth century introduction to North America of a European lineage of the common reed Phragmites australis. Previous studies found no evidence of natural hybridization between native and introduced lineages of P. australis, but produced some F1 hybrids under experimental conditions when the seed parent was native and the pollen parent was introduced. In this study we used microsatellite data to compare genotypes of P. australis along a transect of approximately 2,000 km in eastern North America. Although hybridization appears uncommon, simulations and principle component analysis of genetic data provided strong evidence for natural hybridization at two sites adjacent to Lake Erie in which native and introduced lineages were sympatric. The seed parent was the native lineage in some cases, and the introduced lineage in other cases. There is now the potential for P. australis hybrids to become increasingly invasive, and managers should consider as a priority the removal of introduced stands from sites where they co-exist with native stands.  相似文献

Aim To examine the composition and structure of the arthropod community on the invasive weed Lepidium draba in its native, expanded and introduced ranges, in order to elucidate the lack of a biotic constraint that may facilitate invasion. Location Europe and western North America. Methods Identical sampling protocols were used to collect data from a total of 35 populations of L. draba in its native (Eastern European), expanded (Western European) and introduced (western US) ranges. A bootstrapping analysis was used to compare herbivore richness, diversity and evenness among the regions. Core species groups (monophages, oligophages and polyphages) on the plant were defined and their abundances and host utilization patterns described. Results Species richness was greatest in the native range, while species diversity and evenness were similar in the native and expanded range, but significantly greater than in the introduced range of L. draba. Specialist herbivore abundance was greater in the native and expanded compared with the introduced range. Oligophagous Brassicaceae‐feeders were equally abundant in all three ranges, and polyphagous herbivore abundance was significantly greater in the introduced range. Overall herbivore abundance was greater in the introduced range. Host utilization was more complete in the two European ranges due to monophagous herbivores that do not exist in the introduced range. Root feeders and gall formers were completely absent from the introduced range, which was dominated by generalist sap‐sucking herbivores. However, one indigenous stem‐mining weevil, Ceutorhynchus americanus, occurred on L. draba in the introduced range. Main conclusions This is, to our knowledge, the first study documenting greater herbivore abundance on an invasive weed in its introduced, compared with its native, range. However, greater abundance does not necessarily translate to greater impact. We argue that, despite the greater total herbivore abundance in the introduced range, differences in the herbivore community structure (specialist vs. generalist herbivory) may contribute to the invasion success of L. draba in the western USA.  相似文献

Native Parasites Adopt Introduced Bivalves of the North Sea   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
Introduced species may have a competitive advantage over native species due to a lack of predators or pathogens. In the North Sea region, it has been assumed that no metazoan parasites are to be found in marine introduced species. In an attempt to test this assumption, we found native parasites in the introduced bivalves Crassostrea gigas and Ensis americanus with a prevalence of 35% and 80%, respectively, dominated by the trematode Renicola roscovita. When comparing these introduced species with native bivalves from the same localities, Mytilus edulis and Cerastoderma edule, trematode intensity was always lower in the introduced species. These findings have three major implications: (1) introduced bivalves are not free of detrimental parasites which raises the question whether introduced species have an advantage over native species after invasion, (2) introduced bivalves may divert parasite burdens providing a relief for native species and (3) they may affect parasite populations by influencing the fate of infectious stages, ending either in dead end hosts, not being consumed by potential final hosts or by adding new hosts. Future studies should consider these implications to arrive at a better understanding of the interplay between native parasites and introduced hosts.

Apparently between 1980 and 1984, Cyprinodon variegatus was introduced into an area of the Pecos River in Texas, where it hybridized with an endemic species, C. pecosensis. Protein electrophoresis indicated that, by 1985, panmictic admixtures of these two pupfishes occupied approximately 430 river-kilometers of the Pecos River, roughly one-half of the historic range of the endemic species. The average frequency of introduced alleles at four diagnostic loci ranged from 0.18 to 0.84 at the 15 sites sampled from the Pecos River in Texas. Clinal patterns in allele frequencies suggest that C. variegatus was introduced into a mid-reach of the river and that this was followed by both upstream and downstream dispersal of the introduced alleles. All pairwise combinations of loci showed significant linkage disequilibrium. The level of disequilibrium indicates chromosomal linkage for one gene-pair, Gpi-A and Est-1. The change in pupfish allele frequencies in the Pecos River represents an extreme example of rapid natural selection in a seminatural situation.  相似文献

One of the most popular single-factor hypotheses that have been proposed to explain the naturalization and spread of introduced species is the enemy release hypothesis (ERH). One ramification of the ERH is that invasive plants sustain less herbivore damage than their native counterparts in the invaded range. However, introduced plants, invasive or not, may experience less herbivore damage than the natives. Therefore, to test the role of natural enemies in the success of invasive plants, studies should include both invasive as well as non-invasive introduced species. In this study, we employed a novel three-way comparison, in which we compared herbivore damage among native, introduced invasive, and introduced non-invasive Eugenia (Myrtaceae) in South Florida. We found that introduced Eugenia, both invasive and non-invasive, sustained less herbivore damage, especially damage by oligophagous and endophagous insects, than native Eugenia. However, the difference in insect damage between introduced invasive and introduced non-invasive Eugenia was not significant. Escape from herbivores may not account for the spread of invasive Eugenia. We would not have been able to draw this conclusion without inclusion of the non-invasive Eugenia species in the study.  相似文献

Rapana venosa is a predatory marine gastropod native to the coastal waters of China, Korea, and Japan. Since the 1940s, R. venosa has been transported around the globe and introduced populations now exist in the Black Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, the Adriatic and Aegean seas, off the coasts of France and the Netherlands, in Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, USA, and in the Rio de la Plata between Uruguay and Argentina. This study surveyed variation in two mitochondrial gene regions to investigate the invasion pathways of R. venosa, identify likely sources for introduced populations, and evaluate current hypotheses of potential transportation vectors. Sequence data were obtained for the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I and NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 gene regions of 178 individuals from eight native locations and 106 individuals from 12 introduced locations. Collections from within the native range displayed very high levels of genetic variation while collections from all introduced populations showed a complete lack of genetic diversity; a single haplotype was common to all introduced individuals. This finding is consistent with the hypothesis that R. venosa was initially introduced into the Black Sea, and this Black Sea population then served as a source for the other secondary invasions by various introduction vectors including ballast water transport. Although non‐native R. venosa populations currently appear to be thriving in their new environments, the lack of genetic variability raises questions regarding the evolutionary persistence of these populations.  相似文献

Differences in the herbivore community between a plant’s native (specialists and generalists) and introduced range (almost exclusively generalists) may lead to the evolution of reduced allocation to defences against specialist herbivores in the introduced range, allowing for increased allocation to competitive ability and to defences against generalist herbivores. Following this logic, the introduction of biological control agents should reverse this evolutionary shift and select for plants with life-history traits that are more similar to those of plants in the native range than those of plants in the introduced range that have not been exposed to biological control. In a common garden experiment, we compared performance and resistance traits of tansy ragwort, Jacobaea vulgaris, among populations from the introduced range (New Zealand and North America) that have either been exposed to or grown free from the biological control agent Longitarsus jacobaeae. For comparison, we included populations from the native European range. We found lower levels of generalist-deterrent pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) and of soluble phenolics in New Zealand populations with than in populations without exposure to L. jacobaeae, while the opposite pattern was detected among North American populations. Contrary to expectation, populations with exposure to L. jacobaeae revealed more feeding damage by L. jacobaeae than populations without exposure. Introduced populations had higher levels of PAs and reproductive output than native J. vulgaris populations. Jacobaea vulgaris was introduced in different parts of the world some 100–130 years ago, while L. jacobaeae was introduced only some 20–40 years ago. Hence, the larger differences observed between native and introduced populations, as compared to introduced populations with and without biological control history, may result from different time scales available for selection to act.  相似文献

Summary Introduced African grasses are invading the grasslands of the Venezuelan savannas and displacing the native grasses. This work, which is part of a program to understand the reasons for the success of the African grasses, specifically investigates whether introduced and native grasses differ in some photosynthetic characteristics. The responses to photon flux density, leaf temperature, leaf-air vapour pressure difference and leaf water potential of leaf photosynthetic rate of two introduced African C4 grasses (Hyparrhenia rufa and Melinis minutiflora) and of a lowland and a highland population of a native Venezuelan grass (Trachypogon plumosus) grown under controlled conditions were compared. These responses in all three species were typical of tropical C4 pasture grasses. The introduced grasses had higher maximum leaf conductance, net photosynthetic rates, and optimum temperature (H. rufa only) for photosynthesis than T. plumosus. However, T. plumosus was able to continue photosynthesis to lower leaf water potentials than the two introduced grasses, and the efficiency which it utilized water, light and mineral nutrients to fix carbon were similar to those of the introduced grasses. The higher rates of leaf photosynthesis of the introduced grasses contributed to, but only partially explained, the higher growth rates compared to T. plumosus. The higher growth rates and nutrient concentration of the introduced grasses are consistent with their ability to establish rapidly, compete successfully for resources, and displace T. plumosus from moist, fertile sites. Conversely, the slower growth rate, lower nutrient concentrations, and superior water relations characteristics are consistent with the capacity of T. plumosus to resist invasion by introduced grasses in poorer sites.  相似文献

Some invasive plants perform better in their area of introduction than in their native region, and this is often attributed either to phenotypic responses and/or to adaptive evolution following exposure to new environmental conditions. Genista monspessulana (French broom) is native to Europe, but highly invasive and abundant along the Pacific Coast of the USA. In this study, the population density and age structure, plant growth and reproductive traits, and seed bank characteristics of 13 native (Mediterranean Basin) and 15 introduced (California, USA) field populations of G. monspessulana were compared. Mean population density, plant height and stem diameter were greater in introduced populations, with the latter two traits explained by a greater mean plant age. Age structure also showed a greater percentage of seedling plants in introduced populations. Fecundity was higher in introduced populations when measured in terms of mature seeds per pod, but lower when comparing seed production per plant (number of pods and mature seeds). Thus, seed rain and seed bank size was considerably higher in introduced populations. Results from this study indicate that G. monspessulana performs better in its introduced region. We hypothesize that release from natural enemies and competitors together with more favorable environmental conditions in the introduced region may explain the invasion success of G. monspessulana. As a result, an integrated management approach using introduced seed predators to suppress seed production and selected management practices to reduce seed banks may be needed for effective long-term control in California.  相似文献

RobA is a member of the XylS/AraC subfamily of DNA binding proteins, and when overexpressed, it induces multiple antibiotic resistance in Escherichia coli. In this study, we introduced a multicopy robA plasmid (pMEP1) and its derivative into OmpF mutants and an AcrAB-deficient mutant. We found that a decrease in susceptibility to multiple antibiotics in these OmpF mutants when pMEP1 was introduced did not depend on OmpF porin expression. Interestingly, a ΔompF mutant (TK007) became more sensitive when pMEP1 was introduced. Moreover, no effect of RobA on the induction of multiple antibiotic resistance in an acrA1? mutant was observed. Therefore, we conclude that the multiple antibiotic resistance induced by the overexpression of RobA largely depends on the activation of the AcrAB efflux, as well as the activation of micF.  相似文献

Summary Demographic characteristics associated with the maintenance and growth of populations, such as seed dynamics, seedling emergence, survival, and tiller dynamics were examined for two tussock grasses, the native Agropyron spicatum and the introduced Agropyron desertorum in a 30-month field study. The introduced grass was aerially sown onto a native grassland site. Seed production of the introduced grass was greater than the native grass in both above- and below-average precipitation years. Seeds of A. spicatum were dispersed when they mature, while A. desertorum retained some seeds in inflorescences, and dispersed them slowly throughout the year. This seed retention allowed some seeds of the introduced grass to escape peak periods of seed predation during the summer and allowed seeds to be deposited constantly into the seed bank. Carryover of seeds in the seed bank beyond one year occurred in the introduced grass but not in the native species. For both species, seedling emergence occurred in both autumn or spring. Survival rates for A. desertorum were higher than A. spicatum when seedlings emerged between November and March. Survival rates of cohorts emerging before November favored A. spicatum whereas survival rates did not differ between species for cohorts emerging after March. Individuals of both species emerging after April were unable to survive the summer drought. Demographic factors associated with seeds of A. desertorum seemed to favor the maintenance and spread of this introduced grass into native stands formerly dominated by A. spicatum.  相似文献

Aim To assess the population genetic consequences of the colonization of two species with contrasting mating systems, Solidago canadensis and Lactuca serriola, along altitudinal gradients in both their native and introduced ranges. Location Allegheny Mountains, West Virginia and Wallowa Mountains, Oregon, USA; Valais, southern Switzerland. Methods Leaf material was collected from populations along altitudinal gradients and genotyped at seven microsatellite loci for each species. Differences in variability between native and introduced areas and in relation to altitude were analysed using linear models. Differences in the genetic, geographical and altitudinal structure of populations between areas were analysed by AMOVA, cluster analysis and Mantel tests. Results Genetic variation within and across populations of S. canadensis was significantly reduced, while populations of L. serriola were significantly more variable, in the introduced area. Genetic diversity decreased significantly with altitude for S. canadensis but not L. serriola. Genetic structure of S. canadensis was similar in both areas, and populations were isolated by geographical but not altitudinal distance. By contrast, population structure of L. serriola was much weaker in the introduced area, and populations were not isolated by distance in either area. Main conclusions Solidago canadensis has experienced a strong genetic bottleneck on introduction to the Valais, but this has not prevented it from colonizing a wide altitudinal range. Variation in neutral markers is therefore not necessarily a good measure for judging the ecological behaviour of a species. By contrast, the greater variability of L. serriola in the introduced area, where it also occurs over a greater altitudinal range, can be explained by increased outcrossing among admixed populations. This suggests that the ecological amplitude of alien species might be enhanced after population admixture in the new range, especially for species with highly structured native populations. However, even genetically depauperate introduced populations can be expected to colonize the same environmental range that they occupy in the native area.  相似文献

To investigate factors affecting the ability of introduced species to invade natural communities in the Western Australian wheatbelt, five communities were examined within a nature reserve near Kellerberrin. Transect studies indicated that introduced annuals were more abundant in woodland than in shrub communities, despite an input of introduced seed into all communities. The response of native and introduced annuals to soil disturbance and fertilizer addition was examined. Small areas were disturbed and/or provided with fertilizer prior to addition of seed of introduced annuals. In most communities, the introduced species used (Avena fatua and Ursinia anthemoides) established well only where the soil had been disturbed, but their growth was increased greatly when fertilizer was also added. Establishment and growth of other introduced species also increased where nutrient addition and soil disturbance were combined. Growth of several native annuals increased greatly with fertilizer addition, but showed little response to disturbance. Fertilizer addition also significantly increased the number of native species present in most communities. This indicates that growth of both native and introduced species is limited by nutrient availability in these communities, but also that introduced species respond more to a combination of nutrient addition and soil disturbance.  相似文献

  1. The parasitoid wasp Ibalia leucospoides is native to the northern hemisphere and has been introduced to the southern hemisphere as a biological control agent for the invasive woodwasp Sirex noctilio. Two subspecies of the parasitoid, Ibalia leucospoides leucospoides (Palearctic distribution) and Ibalia leucospoides ensiger (Nearctic distribution), were introduced and are reported to have hybridized.
  2. Despite extensive records of the numbers and origins of the wasps imported into the southern hemisphere, nothing is known regarding their current population diversity. We investigated the genetic variation of I. leucospoides in its native and introduced ranges using mitochondrial (COI) and nuclear (ITS) markers.
  3. Mitochondrial DNA diversity in the introduced range was limited, with only five haplotypes, although sequence divergence between these haplotypes was high. Similarly, the ITS rDNA sequences revealed multiple clades present in the introduced range.
  4. These results reflect introductions from a wide geographical range but where genetic bottlenecks have possibly reduced the genetic diversity. The data further reflect the origin of the I. leucospoides populations in South America and South Africa from New Zealand or Australia. We found no evidence of hybridization between the two subspecies of the parasitoid in its introduced range, and no evidence that I. leucospoides ensiger has established outside its native range.

Biotic interactions involving exotic plants in their introduced ranges may differ from those of co‐occurring plant species and from interactions in their native ranges. When interactions are less negative, or more positive compared to native plant species, this may increase invasion success, and differences among ranges may cause changes in exotic plant traits. Here, we investigated arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM) associated with Triadica sebifera seedlings from populations in native (China) and introduced ranges (US) and with seedlings from US and China species within three co‐occurring genera (Liquidambar, Ulmus, Celtis) grown in multiple common gardens in both ranges. No general pattern of higher or lower AM colonization was found in the introduced range for China and US Celtis, Liquidambar, or Ulmus species. However, AM colonization was significantly higher for Triadica than for other genera, particularly in the introduced range, suggesting AM may improve Triadica's invasion success. Triadica AM colonization was higher in US than China gardens, decreased with increasing soil nitrogen in China, but was independent of soil nitrogen in the US. This might reflect a different effect of soil fertility on this mutualism among ranges. Introduced Triadica populations had higher AM colonization than native populations, particularly in US gardens, implying a possible advantage from greater AM association in the introduced range. This is the first field study demonstrating post‐introduction changes in mycorrhizal colonization of an invasive species. It indicates that there are ecological and evolutionary components to the effect of positive interactions on plant invasions.  相似文献

Introduced Plant Viruses and the Invasion of a Native Grass Flora   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Weed and native grasses from the South Island of New Zealand were surveyed for virus infection. Cocksfoot mottle virus (CfMV) and Ryegrass mosaic virus (RgMV) were restricted to a few introduced species; however, Barley yellow dwarf viruses (BYDVs) have invaded native grasses in New Zealand. Virus incidence was significantly lower in the native species (2%) than in the introduced species (12%). Four different serotypes (RMV, RPV, PAV, MAV) were detected in the introduced grass flora but only two (RMV, PAV) were detected in native species. In experimental transmission tests the aphid vector Rhopalosiphum padi's survival was variable on the 20 native species tested but this was not due to the presence or absence of endophytic fungi as none were detected in the New Zealand species. Aphid numbers increased and plants were killed when R. padi fed on Agrostis muelleriana and Festuca multinodis. R. padi transmitted a PAV isolate to these and six other native species. BYDVs infected 4/5 of the subfamilies tested. Virus incidence in native Arundinoideae and Pooideae was significantly lower than in introduced Pooideae and Panicoideae. One species of Bambusoideae collected from the field was not infected but was found susceptible in glasshouse tests. Agrostis capillaris, Dactylis glomerata and Lolium perenne were identified as the most likely reservoirs of infection for the native flora. Anthoxanthum odoratum was not infected but if the SGV serotype and its vector Schizaphis graminum were ever introduced, A. odoratum could form an effective reservoir from near sea level into alpine areas. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

A macaque population produced by the hybridization of native Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) and introduced Taiwanese macaques (M. cyclopis) in Wakayama Prefecture was shown to possess three DNA haplotypes of the natural resistance-associated macrophage protein 1 (NRAMP1). Based on genotyping and comparison with M. fuscata populations, it was revealed that the introduced M. cyclopis population was polymorphic for the NRAMP1 locus. Extensive crossbreeding of the introduced species with the native species was confirmed using this genetic marker and the proportion of M. cyclopis genes was 57.4%. Results of statistical tests suggested non-random mating in the hybrid population.  相似文献
