Teniasis     
The aim of this study was to investigate the changes of level of the essential elements of copper, magnesium, and zinc status in cases of teniasis in children. Copper, magnesium, and zinc levels were measured in 40 children who were positive for intestinal parasite of Taenia saginata. Scores were obtained for the positives and their 30 age- and sex-matched T. saginata-negative healthy children. The mean concentration of copper, magnesium, and zinc in blood showed no statistically difference in T. saginata-positive children than in their controls both in females (p>0.05) and males (p>0.05). However, a clear numerically decrease was observed especially in magnesium and zinc levels compared to the controls both in females and males. The average magnesium concentration in T. saginata-positive female children and male children were 20±1.9 and 22±2.2 mg/L and it was 27±2.1 and 27±2.3 mg/L in controls, respectively. The mean values of the zinc in blood were 0.76±0.5 and 0.72±0.4 mg/L in T. saginata-positive female children and male children and 0.85±0.3 and 0.81±0.5 mg/L in female and male controls, respectively. No correlation could be demonstrated between age and mean values of copper, magnesium, and zinc in T. saginata-positive females and males and controls (p>0.05). No significant correlation could be found between blood copper, magnesium and zinc levels in T. saginata-positive female and male children and controls (p>0.05). Although there was no statistical correlation observed in copper, magnesium, and zinc levels between patients and controls, there seem to be, especially in magnesium and zinc levels, a decrease, whereas no change was seen in the zinc level in children infected with T. saginata compared to controls.  相似文献

Inadequate minerals intake, as well as disruption of some metabolic processes in which microelements are cofactors, are suggested to lead to the development of hypertension. The role of minerals in the pathogenesis of hypertension still remains to be explained. In the present study, we sought to determine associations between serum and hair mineral concentrations and serum lipids and glucose levels. Forty obese hypertensive subjects with insulin resistance and 40 healthy volunteers were recruited in the study. Blood pressure, BMI, and insulin resistance were recorded in all subjects. Levels of lipids, glucose, sodium and potassium, iron, copper, zinc, magnesium, and calcium were assessed in serum. Iron, copper, zinc, magnesium, and calcium were assessed in hair. Dietary intake of the analyzed minerals was estimated. We found distinctly higher concentrations of serum iron and serum and hair calcium as well as markedly lower levels of hair zinc in the hypertensive subjects. The study group manifested also significantly lower daily intake of calcium, magnesium, and iron. We observed a relationship between the concentrations of iron, zinc, and copper in serum and hair and high and low range of cholesterol, triglycerides, and glucose serum levels in the studied patients. Moreover, this study demonstrated significant correlation between serum and hair concentrations of selected minerals and their dietary intake and levels of serum lipids and glucose and blood pressure in the study and the control groups. The obtained results seem to indicate the association between lipid and glucose metabolism and iron, copper, zinc, and calcium concentrations in blood and hair of hypertensive and obese patients with insulin resistance.  相似文献

Deficient or excessive levels of blood trace elements can be an adverse factor in human and animal pregnancy. The aim of this study was to investigate possible differences in the levels of serum magnesium, calcium, copper, and zinc in preeclamptic and healthy pregnant women. Samples were collected from 30 preeclamptic (PE) and 30 healthy pregnant (HP) women. The serum copper concentration was significantly lower in the PE group by 68% (p<0.0001) when compared to the healthy controls. The serum zinc and calcium were 43% and 10% lower in the PE women, respectively (both with p<0.0001), whereas the magnesium concentration showed nonsignificant differences between the two groups. Measurement of these elements may be useful for the early diagnosis of a preeclamptic condition.  相似文献

Changes in essential trace elements and heavy metals may affect the atherosclerotic state of patients on maintenance hemodialysis (HD). The aim of the study was to evaluate the relation between the serum levels of some trace elements and heavy metals (iron, zinc, manganese, copper, magnesium, cobalt, cadmium, lead, and copper/zinc ratio) and carotid artery intima-media thickness (CIMT) in HD patients. Fifty chronic HD patients without known atherosclerotic disease and 48 age- and sex-matched healthy individuals were included in the study. The serum levels of trace elements (iron, zinc, manganese, copper, and magnesium) and heavy metals (cobalt, cadmium, and lead) were measured by Atomic Adsorption Spectrophotometer (UNICAM-929). CIMT was assessed by carotid artery ultrasonography. The serum levels of iron, zinc, and manganese were lower; levels of copper, magnesium, cobalt, cadmium, lead, and copper/zinc ratio were higher in HD patients compared to controls. A direct method for determination of Fe, Cu, Zn, Mg and Se in erythrocytes was developed. The aim of the present study was to establish a method for examining perioperative levels of the above mentioned elements simultaneously in erythrocytes and plasma by atomic absorption spectrophotometry in 11 patients undergoing neurosurgery for acute spinal nerve compressions because of intervertebral disk prolapses. Reference values for erythrocytes were 11.49 +/- 3.48 mmol/mmol Hb; 0.82 +/- 0.087 mmol/mmol Hb; 9.01 +/- 2.20 mmol/mmol Hb; 0.104 +/- 0.032 mmol/mmol Hb; 0.07 +/- 0.050 mmol/mmol Hb for iron, copper, zinc, magnesium, and selenium, respectively. Postoperative erythrocyte concentrations did not differ significantly compared to those obtained preoperatively and remained within the reference ranges perioperatively. For plasma the following reference values were used: 19.0 +/- 8.0 mmol/l (Fe); 20.1 +/- 8.2 mmol/l (Cu); 15.4 +/- 4.6 mmol/l (Zn); 0.9 +/- 0.15 mmol/l (Mg); 1.02 +/- 0.3 mmol/l (Se). There was a significant decrease in the concentration of copper in plasma (13.41 +/- 3.46 mmol/l, p < 0.1) and zinc (10.73 +/- 2.73 mmol/l, p < 0.1) immediately postoperative, iron (10.56 +/- 3.91 mmol/l, p < 0.1) and zinc on day 1 (11.28 +/- 1.88 mmol/l, p < 0.10), and a significant postoperative increase of copper on day 5 (18.81 +/- 3.97 mmol/l, p < 0.1), postoperatively. BackgroundPityriasis Alba (PA) is a common skin disorder affecting the children and it has multiple risk factors.ObjectivesTo assess the serum levels of trace elements (copper, zinc, and magnesium) and hemoglobin (Hb) level in patients with PA.MethodThis is a case control study; 110 participants (55 cases and 55 controls) were recruited from pediatric dermatology and family medicine clinics, Cairo university hospitals. Patients were allocated into two groups, PA group (randomly selected male and female children age group (6–16) with PA lesions) and a matched control group. Full history was taken including sociodemographic data, present history of the lesions. Full general and dermatological examination was done. Blood samples were taken to asses iron and trace elements levels. The gained measures were analyzed by (SPSS) program version 22.ResultsThis study showed that Hb levels, serum ferritin, copper, zinc and magnesium were significantly lower in PA group. There was statistically significant difference between both cases and controls regarding trace elements (copper, zinc, and magnesium) with (p value was 0.000, 0.000 and 0.003) respectively. Zinc deficiency increased the risk by more than 15 folds. Also, there was statistically significant difference between both groups regarding Hb levels and serum ferritin (p value was 0.000). The reduced Hb level increases the risk of PA by more than nine folds (OR 9.6)ConclusionPA is associated with reduced levels of Hb, serum zinc, ferritin, copper and magnesium; sun exposure, skin phototype were found to be important risk factors for PA.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the zinc, iron, copper, calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium levels in blood serum and zinc and copper levels in hair of dogs with canine visceral leishmaniasis. The serum zinc and iron levels were found to be significantly lower in diseased dogs than those of healthy controls. Serum copper levels were significantly higher, whereas no significant differences were observed for calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium. There were no significant differences in the zinc and copper levels in hair. Our results show that the serum zinc, iron, and copper levels are altered in canine leishmaniasis.  相似文献

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine diseases. However, its pathogenesis is unclear. We aim to explore the potential relationships between serum macroelements/microelements and PCOS. A total of 1137 women were involved in the current study. PCOS was defined according to ESHRE/ASRM, and complete blood samples were collected. Serum macroelements (calcium and magnesium) and microelements (copper, zinc, and iron) were assayed through atomic absorption spectrophotometry. PCOS patients had significantly higher copper concentrations than patients without PCOS (P < 0.001). By contrast, PCOS patients had lower serum calcium levels than patients without PCOS (P < 0.001). No significant differences were observed in the levels of serum zinc, magnesium, and iron between PCOS and non-PCOS patients. PCOS patients with acne had higher magnesium levels than those without acne (P = 0.020), and PCOS patients with hirsutism had lower magnesium levels than those without hirsutism (P = 0.037). High serum copper and low calcium levels may be correlated with PCOS. Magnesium concentrations are correlated with acne and hirsutism in PCOS patients. These results provide clues to explore the mechanism of PCOS and guidance for element treatments in PCOS patients.  相似文献

Pregnant women in developing countries are vulnerable to multiple micronutrient deficiencies. Studies assessing serum levels of the micronutrients and magnitude of their deficiencies are very scarce in African subjects. This study was aimed at determining serum levels of micronutrients in 375 pregnant (42 HIV seropositive) and 76 non-pregnant women (20 HIV seropositive) who visited the University of Gondar Hospital, Gondar, Ethiopia. Serum concentrations of zinc,\ copper, selenium, calcium, and magnesium were determined using an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer. Irrespective of HIV serostatus, pregnant women had significantly higher serum concentrations of copper and copper/zinc ratio and significantly lower magnesium compared to those in non-pregnant women (P < 0.05). Except for selenium, which was significantly lower in HIV-seropositive pregnant women (P < 0.05), the mean serum concentrations of zinc, copper, calcium, and magnesium were not significantly different between pregnant women by HIV serostatus. The prevalence of deficiency in zinc, magnesium, selenium, and calcium in the pregnant women, irrespective of their HIV serostatus, was 66.7%, 25.6%, 21.9%, and 9.3%, respectively. The magnitude of deficiency in zinc, magnesium, and selenium was significantly higher in HIV seropositive pregnant women (76.2%, 52.4%, and 45.2%) than that in HIV-seronegative pregnant women (65.5%, 22.2%, and 18.9%) and in HIV-seronegative non-pregnant women (42.9%, 8.1%, and 30.4%; P < 0.05). Deficiency in one, two, three, or four mineral elements was observed in 44.8%, 14.4%, 9.9%, and 5.1% of the pregnant women, respectively. Only 25.9% of the pregnant women and 44.7% of the non-pregnant women were not deficient in any of the micronutrients. The high prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies in pregnant and non-pregnant women in Gondar, Ethiopia warrants the need for strategies on prevention and control of the deficiencies.  相似文献

The statistical tests analysis of variance, analysis of covariance, correlation coefficient, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test,t-test, and Tukey test were applied to copper, magnesium, managenese, and zinc content in serum (S) and in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of controls and of a sporadic form of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) disease. This is carried out in order to evaluate statistically the possible relationships among the trace elements when ALS patients and controls are considered as independent groups, within sex groups and within age decades of both patients and control classes. A statistically significant difference between older controls (age >40) and ALS patients (age>40) for copper in CSF, copper in S, manganese in S, and zinc in CSF was found. Statistically significant correlation coefficients within the different classes formed for this study were observed. Within this pool, a correlation of patient group can differ statistically from the corresponding one of controls and vice versa. Thus, this correlation could be characteristic of the group from which is extracted, e.g., the correlation between copper in S and zinc in S, which is characteristic of ALS patients when considered as an independent group as well as members of the male patient class.  相似文献

Possible regulation of trace metal metabolism by various steroid hormones has been reported by a number of investigators. The purpose of the present study was to determine the effect of aldosterone on the serum copper, zinc, and magnesium concentrations in the rat. Male and female rats were infused with aldosterone for up to 72 h and the serum copper, zinc, and magnesium concentrations were determined. The serum zinc concentration exhibited a transient decrease with a nadir at 24 h. No significant change was observed in serum magnesium or copper that was directly attributable to aldosterone. The mechanism by which aldosterone affects the transient serum zinc decrease was not demonstrated, but several possibilities were discussed.  相似文献

The effect of chronic inflammation on serum, blood and hepatic copper and zinc concentrations has been studied in arthritic female Sprague-Dawley rats, for a six week period. Metals were determined by atomic-absorption spectrophotometry and by inductively-coupled argon plasma spectrometry. Blood measurements evidenced hypercupremia and normal zinc levels. Serum and hepatic copper content were found to be increased. Serum zinc values were reduced whilst hepatic zinc concentration was higher. Serum alterations of both metals remained throughout the studied period. Good correlations were found between systemic alteration and changes in metal values.  相似文献

The variation in copper and zinc metabolism with tumor growth appears to relate directly to progression or regression of the disease. Historically, elevations in serum copper have been used as clinical indicators in hematological neoplasms since the early 1960s. More recently, we have monitored breast, colo-rectal, and lung cancer patients for a six-month period through courses of cytotoxic chemotherapy to determine copper and zinc changes with tumor growth. Groups were divided into responders and nonresponders blind to their serum copper and zinc levels. Trends in elevated serum copper with active disease have shown similar trends in decreasing values with effective therapy, but normalization was at a slower rate. Serum zinc levels in the same patients were markedly below normal and did not increase in the study period. The clinical significance or elevated serum copper and depressed serum zinc is discussed and the potential relationship between the two elements is explored. A solid tumor-bearing rat model, mammary adenocarcinoma R 3230 AC, has detailed more of the changes in copper and zinc metabolism with solid tumor growth. Serum copper and zinc varied with tumor mass, as in clinical studies. Liver values of the two essential metals did not change significantly, but liver-related copper-containing enzymes showed marked variations. Ceruloplasmin in serum increased with increasing tumor mass, as would be expected with the increased serum copper levels. Cytochrome c oxidase activity in liver homogenates from tumor-bearing animals was significantly depressed.  相似文献

Zinc, copper, and magnesium concentrations in hair were measured in groups of children varying in one condition—protein-energy malnutrition, ricketts, thalassemia, malignancy, cardiac failure, or after prolonged infection and in healthy controls. As compared with controls, copper and magnesium concentrations were low in all groups, whereas higher values were obtained for hair zinc. These results showed that a generalized copper and magnesium deficiency were observed in the southeastern part of Turkey. However, zinc deficiency couldn’t be detected as far as the hair zinc values were concerned, although all of the subjects fell within the 50 percentile limits for their age-appropriate weights and heights.  相似文献

In this study, serum copper, zinc, magnesium, iron and calcium concentrations were investigated in 40 patients with bronchial asthma (BA) and in 43 healthy subjects. Copper and calcium levels were found to be increased in patients with BA compared to the control group (p < 0.001 and p < 0.001 respectively). On the other hand, the serum zinc level was significantly lower in healthy subjects (p < 0.01). No changes were found in serum magnesium and iron levels in patients with BA compared to controls. In addition to various elements, certain serum proteins such as albumin, transferrin and ferritin were also assessed to determine whether there was a relationship between the elements and proteins in patients with BA. 目的:研究不育患者精浆和血液中微量元素的含量,为男性不育的诊断和治疗提供理论依据。方法:对73例正常生育组男性和265例男性不育患者的精浆和血液中的锌、铁、铜、钙、镁、镉进行检测分析,分析两组血液和精浆微量元素的差异。结果:不育组患者精浆和血液中锌的含量明显低于正常对照组,铜、镉离子含量明显高于正常对照组,与正常对照组比较均有显著性差异(P<0.01);而两组中的钙、铁、镁的含量接近,差异无统计学意义(P>0.05)。不育组患者精浆中的锌元素水平明显高于血液锌含量,而血液中的镉含量明显高于精浆中的镉含量,差异有明显的统计学意义(P<0.05)。结论:精浆和血液中锌、铜、镉的变化与男性不育密切相关。  相似文献

A completely randomized controlled study based on a rabbit model was designed to study the effect of repetitive ischemic preconditioning (IPC) on a spinal cord ischemic reperfusion injury. Twenty four white adult Japanese rabbits were randomly assigned to one of the 3 groups (n = 8 per group): Group I: sham-operation group, Group II: ischemic reperfusion group, and, Group III: IPC group. Spinal cord ischemia was induced by infra-renal aortic cross-clamp for 45 min in Group II. Before 45 min ischemia, the rabbits in Group III underwent four cycles of IPC (5 min of ischemia followed by 5 min of reperfusion). Post-operative neurological function, electromyography (EMG) of rear limbs, and spinal cord histopathological changes were measured. The concentrations of calcium, magnesium, copper, and zinc in spinal cord were measured in the 7th day. The neurological function and histopathological changes in Group II were significantly different from those in Group I or Group III (P < 0.05 or 0.01). There was a more significant change of EMG in Group II than that in Group III (P < 0.05). The concentrations of calcium and copper in Group II were significantly higher (P < 0.05 or 0.01), but magnesium and zinc were significantly lower (P < 0.05) than those in Group I. Calcium and copper in Group II were significantly higher (P < 0.05), but zinc was significantly lower (P < 0.01) than those in Group III. In conclusion, repetitive IPC can protect rabbit spinal cord from ischemic reperfusion injury in a timely manner, which is associated with corrections of imbalance of calcium, magnesium, copper, and zinc in the ischemic region.  相似文献

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of 6-week aerobic exercise program upon blood Zn and Cu levels. There were 12 male university students with an average age of 21.67+/-0.89 years and no regular training habits participated in the study. The participants were subjected three days a week 1 hour a day continuous running program on treadmill with an intensity of 60-70% for a period of six weeks. They were fed with zinc and copper free diet throughout the study and it was made sure that they were not using copper or zinc containing vitamin tablets. The difference between the pre and post study period were found to be statistically significant as regards to both resting and maximal loading conditions (p<0.01). The pre and post training maxVO2 values were also found to be positively correlated with the copper and zinc levels in blood. Both the copper and zinc blood levels were found decreased after the training period p<0.05.  相似文献

Imbalance of zinc and copper status has been hypothesized in human hypertension. A case-control study was carried out to elucidate the possible relationship between zinc and copper status and essential hypertension. Thirty-one subjects affected by mild stable hypertension, pharmacologically untreated, were investigated together with 31 normotensive controls individually matched for sex, age, and smoking habits. Zinc and copper in serum and urine were measured, and serum activities of alkaline phosphatase (AP), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), copper-zinc superoxide dismutase (Cu?Zn SOD), lysyl oxidase (LOX), and monoamine oxidase (MAO) were evaluated. No significant difference in serum and urine zinc and copper content as far as in serum activity of zinc (AP and LDH) or copper (Cu?Zn SOD, LOX, and MAO)-dependent enzymes was found between hypertensives and normotensives. Positive relationships were found in normotensives between serum and urine levels of zinc (r=0.577;p=0.001) and copper (r=0.394;p=0.028), and between serum copper and Cu?Zn SOD (r=0.534;p=0.002). In normotensives, diastolic blood pressure and serum zinc were positively related (r=0.370;p=0.041). In hypertensives, inverse correlations were observed between diastolic blood pressure and AP (r=?0.498;p=0.004) and Cu?Zn SOD (r=?0.452;p=0.011), and between systolic blood pressure and LOX (r=?0.385;p=0.033). Diastolic blood pressure was related to LDH inversely in hypertensives (r=?0.357;p=0.049) and positively in normotensives (r=0.457;p=0.010). In normotensives, diastolic blood pressure was inversely related with MAO (r=?0.360;p=0.046). These findings support the hypothesis that an imbalance of zinc and copper status might be involved in human hypertension.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: An imbalance between zinc and copper metabolism has been reported to predispose to coronary artery disease (CAD) in Western populations, but there are little data for other racial groups. We have therefore investigated the association between serum copper and zinc, and CAD in Iranian subjects undergoing coronary angiography. METHODS: Serum copper, zinc, fasting lipid profile, and blood glucose levels were measured in 114 patients (67 male and 47 female) undergoing routine coronary angiogram. Anthropometric features including blood pressure were determined using standard procedures. Demographic characteristics, including menopausal status and smoking habit, were assessed by questionnaire. RESULTS: Male patients had lower serum copper (p<0.05), lower serum zinc (p<0.05), and higher serum zinc/copper ratio (p<0.05) than females. Serum copper and zinc concentrations were significantly lower in the subjects with angiographically defined CAD than those patients with a normal angiogram, although the zinc/copper ratio was higher in these patients (p<0.001). Serum copper (r=-0.303, p<0.001) and zinc (r=-0.250, p<0.01) concentrations were both inversely related to age, and copper was positively associated with fasting serum triglycerides (r=0.188, p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Serum copper and zinc concentrations were significantly lower in Iranian patients with abnormal versus those with a normal angiogram. However, the zinc/copper ratio was higher in patients with CAD compared to subjects without CAD. Serum zinc and copper concentrations appear to be influenced by several physiological factors including age and gender.  相似文献
