The Nariokotome Homo erectus has an apparent disjunction of inferred age as judged by dental maturity, by epiphyseal closure and by stature, when compared to modern human norms. On this basis, it has been suggested that this fossil hominin differed in its pattern of growth and development from modern humans. In particular, the characteristic human adolescent growth spurt may not yet have been present, and in this sense H. erectus growth would be more ape-like than human-like. This study tests this conclusion by examining the variation in age as inferred from the maturity indicators in a modern human skeletal population of known age. The results show that all of the maturity indicators used in this analysis underage the test skeletons. Furthermore, there is also no consistency between the indicators; they do not agree in their inferred chronological ages. The disjunction between the maturity indicators in the test skeletons is similar in pattern to the disjunction observed in the Nariokotome Homo erectus. This is particularly true of the relationship between dental age and the other two indicators. These results suggest that the pattern observed in Nariokotome is within the normal range of variation found in modern humans. It does not necessarily indicate a different pattern of growth and development.  相似文献

To identify new indicators of aquatic environmental parameters, both qualitative (the percentages of curved filaments and filaments with ending separation spines) and quantitative morphological parameters (filament and cell size) of a dominant chain colony-forming planktonic diatom (Aulacoseira granulata) were determined in the large, subtropical Pearl River, China. The qualitative parameters mainly exhibited a spatial pattern. The percentage of curved filaments was a good bioindicator of spatial patterns because it varied along the nutrient gradient. Furthermore, the percentage of filaments with ending separation spines was a good bioindicator of seasonal variation. Although the quantitative parameters exhibited a clear temporal pattern, no single parameter could be used as a bioindicator of either spatial or temporal patterns. The link between qualitative and quantitative parameters reflected the internal adaptation mechanism of filamentous diatoms to the external environment. The methods of the present study can also be applied to ecological indicators in other aquatic ecosystems dominated by chain colony-forming diatoms.  相似文献

This study assesses chronological age of immature individuals from the degree of ossification evident in the foot skeleton. We considered all tarsal and ray bones in various combinations to determine the most sensitive indicators of chronological age. Skeletal maturity was rated according to a subjective but simple scoring system applied to radiographs of normal feet of children of known chronological age. Scales for assessing the primary center of ossification, secondary center of ossification, and state of fusion are defined. In general, as expected, females show earlier onset of skeletal maturity than males; in particular, females in our sample are skeletally mature in most elements beginning 48 months prior to the earliest incidence of skeletal maturity in males for the same bones. Females in our sample show a marked tendency toward skeletal maturity of all elements by 150 months of age, while males do not show the same tendency until approximately 200 months of age. In general within each sex, consecutive states of fusion show broad overlap in range of chronological age within each bone. Combining scores from several different bones enables a reasonable estimate of potential age in a test application of the model.  相似文献

Although adult skeletal morphological variation is best understood within the framework of age-related processes, relatively little research has been directed towards the structure of and variation in trabecular bone during ontogeny. We report here new quantitative and structural data on trabecular bone microarchitecture in the proximal tibia during growth and development, as demonstrated in a subadult archaeological skeletal sample from the Late Prehistoric Ohio Valley. These data characterize the temporal sequence and variation in trabecular bone structure and structural parameters during ontogeny as related to the acquisition of normal functional activities and changing body mass. The skeletal sample from the Fort Ancient Period site of SunWatch Village is composed of 33 subadult and three young adult proximal tibiae. Nondestructive microCT scanning of the proximal metaphyseal and epiphyseal tibia captures the microarchitectural trabecular structure, allowing quantitative structural analyses measuring bone volume fraction, degree of anisotropy, trabecular thickness, and trabecular number. The microCT resolution effects on structural parameters were analyzed. Bone volume fraction and degree of anisotropy are highest at birth, decreasing to low values at 1 year of age, and then gradually increasing to the adult range around 6-8 years of age. Trabecular number is highest at birth and lowest at skeletal maturity; trabecular thickness is lowest at birth and highest at skeletal maturity. The results of this study highlight the dynamic sequential relationships between growth/development, general functional activities, and trabecular distribution and architecture, providing a reference for comparative studies.  相似文献

本文对Fels追踪研究中8—17岁男性青少年的相对骨龄与脂肪分布类型之间的关系做了分析。按体重/身高~2调整后,如用每个年龄的三种皮褶厚度(ST)指数的均值表示脂肪分布类型的话,8—12岁时,脂肪分布类型呈外周型分布,但13岁后开始朝向心型发展呈全身性分布。如用肩胛下ST/(肩胛下ST+肱三头肌区ST)的比例表示的话,那么14—17岁时,相对骨龄早者(简称早组)与相对骨龄晚者(简称晚组)相比,前者有较明显的向心型分布倾向。13—14岁时,早组的上述比值的年增长明显大于晚组。但是,按脂肪分布类型指数等级的基线和体重/身高~2调整之后,7、11或14岁时的相对骨龄不能预测17岁时的脂肪分布类型指数的等级。所以,我们可以得出这样的结论:如按本文的比例指数加以定量的话,脂肪分布类型与男性青少年的相对骨龄只有微弱的关系。他们的脂肪分布类型可能与其它成熟指征(如男性青春期的第二性征)有明显的关系。  相似文献

The assessment of age‐at‐death in non‐adult skeletal remains is under constant review. However, in many past societies an individual's physical maturation may have been more important in social terms than their exact age, particularly during the period of adolescence. In a recent article (Shapland and Lewis: Am J Phys Anthropol 151 (2013) 302–310) highlighted a set of dental and skeletal indicators that may be useful in mapping the progress of the pubertal growth spurt. This article presents a further skeletal indicator of adolescent development commonly used by modern clinicians: cervical vertebrae maturation (CVM). This method is applied to a collection of 594 adolescents from the medieval cemetery of St. Mary Spital, London. Analysis reveals a potential delay in ages of attainment of the later CVM stages compared with modern adolescents, presumably reflecting negative environmental conditions for growth and development. The data gathered on CVM is compared to other skeletal indicators of pubertal maturity and long bone growth from this site to ascertain the usefulness of this method on archaeological collections. Growth series of femora, tibiotarsi, and humeri of the Canada goose Branta canadensis were examined to evaluate whether bone surface textures are reliable indicators of relative age and skeletal maturity in this taxon. The relationship between surface texture and skeletal maturity was analysed by comparing element texture types with both size-based and size-independent maturity estimates. A subsample of hindlimb elements was thin sectioned to observe histological structures underlying various surface textures. Three relative age classes of elements are identifiable based on surface texture. Juvenile and subadult bone textures have fibrous and/or porous areas on the bone shaft and are distinguished by the presence (in juveniles) or absence (in subadults) of coarse longitudinal striations in proximal and/or distal regions. Adult bone texture lacks surface porosity. Immature textures are caused by channels in fibrolamellar bone intersecting the bone surface; the presence or absence of striations is determined by channel orientation. Mature textures may be underlain by fibrolamellar bone with little to no surface exposure of channels, or by lamellar bone deposited after rapid growth ceases. The utility of the textural ageing method appears intimately related to the uninterrupted determinate growth regime of Branta . This suggests that bone surface textures may prove useful as skeletal maturity indicators in both modern and fossil taxa with similar growth regimes, but may not necessarily be reliable for taxa with interrupted and/or indeterminate growth.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 148 , 133–168.  相似文献

Assessments of the relative maturity of individual children have been widely used to improve estimations of future growth as well as in evaluations of physiological disorders. Skeletal age (Hand) has been the most commonly used method for these estimations. In the clinical use of skeletal ages, certain problems are inherent regardless of which standard is selected. One of these is the method of reporting so that the cliniciam may learn of the normal variation at each age as well as the operational error of the specific assessor. Another problem lies in the proper clinical interpretation to be put upon significantly variant skeletal age readings in infancy, in childhood, or in adolescence. A third problem arises in limiting the use of skeletal ages which are read from areas which are involved with osseous pathology. And fourthly, a child's level of maturity is not static throughout his growing years; even with no change in therapeutic regime, marked shifts in relative maturity have been often noted. The wealth of experience which has now been acquired with the Greulich-Pyle standard is not the least of the advantages in using the Hand for the assessment of skeletal age. The 30 centers in this small area of the body, however, may be harmonious in development or may vary in “maturity” by as much as three years in a single hand. The problems then are: Which centers best represent the individual child? Which centers are most closely related to growth? Is growth in the hand and accurate index of the growth in other areas of the body? In total stature? The clinical assessment of future growth may best be made from a consideration of the whole child: his size, his physical characteristics, and his skeletal age, as well as the pattern of change-with-age in each of these. These problems will be discussed with illustrations drawn from the longitudinal Growth Study at this institution.  相似文献

In studies of postnatal human development the skeletal maturation of the hand has been found to be a better indicator of general physical maturation than attained body height. For assessment of prenatal human development the Crown-rump length (CRL) has so far been the most commonly used measure. The object of the present study is to examine the possibility of also using the skeletal maturation of the hand as a maturity indicator in fetal development. The study is based upon a radiographic and histochemical investigation of 169 human fetuses. On the basis of counting silver-impregnated diaphyses on radiographs of the hand and foot a maturity indicator (CNO = Composite Number of Ossified bones in hand and foot) was established. Owing to the marked regularity of the recorded ossification pattern, the CNO parameter can be used for evaluating fetal maturation during the early half of the prenatal period. To supplement the assessment of skeletal maturation during the later stages of development, a classification based on the shape of some bones was included in the study. In many cases fetuses of the same size (CRL) exhibited different stages of skeletal maturation (CNO). In accordance with findings from assessment of postnatal development, a more accurate evaluation of fetal development is obtained by combining the size parameter CRL with an assessment of fetal skeletal maturation, CNO.  相似文献

《开发区区域环境影响评价技术导则》(HJ/T2003)已将生态适宜度评价列为区域环境影响评价的主要内容,并明确提出了三级指标集成的框架要求,但并未推荐具体的技术方法。在当前的环评工作实际中,出现了多种生态适宜度的评价技术,如排列成比较技术、层次分析、模糊评价法等,然而这些方法却普遍存在着权重分配过程中的主观性问题。而对于生态适宜度评价这类多指标集成的问题,无论采用何种技术方法,只有减少权重赋值的主观性才能体现评价结论的科学性。鉴于此,推荐了一种新型的生态适宜度评价方法——突变级数法。通过镇江新区环评的具体案例分析,突变级数法表现出在生态适宜度评价方面较好的适用性。更为重要的是,通过对前述3种方法的数理分析对比,突变级数法表现出主营以下两方面的比较优势:首先该法不使用权重,只需按指标间的内在逻辑关系对指标的重要程度进行排序,很大限度地避免了人为制定权重的主观性;同时,作为定性与定量相结合的技术方法,突变级数法不仅可以对各地块是否适合其利用类型做出评价,还可以运用模型计算出各个地块生态适宜度的具体数值,对不同地块的生态适宜性程度进行定量的对比。诚然,应该客观地指出,在按指标的重要程度排序过程、以及评价指标的量化分级过程中,突变级数法仍然不能完全避免人为主观性,这也需要今后继续探索整合其他技术方法。加以进一步完善。  相似文献

It is the aim of this study to provide non-state as well as state actors with an effective tool to assess the drought risk of households. The developed methodology introduces a technique for comparative measuring in the context of drought disaster risk management. This approach is designed to contribute to the effectiveness and accuracy of drought risk analyses at the micro level. In a process of qualitative and quantitative empirical research in East India, 10 single indicators for drought risk at the household level have been developed and validated. Based on this, methods of combining these single indicators within a composite index are introduced. Within the study area in Orissa, this instrument can be used for drought risk analysis in order to prioritize preventive measures. Outside the study area, the developed methodology can be adopted to gain suitable risk indicators and composite index weighting criteria. This study tackles the desire of disaster risk management projects for comparative risk analysis at the micro level and demonstrates how certain characteristics of households’ can be quantified. Thus the developed instrument facilitates prioritizing preventive actions for the most vulnerable households.  相似文献

The present research analyses the reliability of coprological tests, both quantitative and qualitative, as indicators of the parasite burden of hosts, using data from wild boars (Sus scrofa) living in Livorno Mountain Park (Tuscany, Central Italy). In the case of intestinal strongyles, which turned out to be the dominant helminths of wild boars, the qualitative coprological test appears as a bad predictor of the real parasite situation of the herds, due to the high number of false negative results (34 animals out of 68). On the other hand, the positive predictive value of the test is high (90%). The quantitative test is significantly correlated with the individual parasite burden of wild boars.  相似文献

Chronological age conveys only a rough approximation of the maturational status of a person whereas skeletal maturity indicators give a more accurate estimation. Therefore, it is of interest to document the correlation between chronological and skeletal age using CVMI and modified MP3 methods. A total of 39 subjects between the age ranges of 9-16 years were selected for this study. Pre-treatment lateral cephalograms and hand-wrist radiographs of the subjects were used. The skeletal age was analyzed by the Cervical Vertebrae Maturity Index (CVMI) and modified MP3 methods. The data was analyzed with SPSS software version 23.00. Kendall''s Tau correlation test was performed to estimate the correlation between chronological age and skeletal age among the subjects and a linear regression test was also performed. Positive correlation was found between chronological age and skeletal age assessed by CVMI method (r= 0.398) and modified MP3 method (r=0.382) with p value >0.003. Thus it can be concluded that there was a positive correlation between chronological age and skeletal age among all the subjects.  相似文献

Estimation of age-at-death of subadults in prehistoric skeletal samples based on modern reference standards rests on a number of assumptions of which many are untestable. If these assumptions are not met error of unknown magnitude and direction will be introduced to the subadult age estimates. This situation suggests that an independent estimate or estimates of age-related features, free of most of the assumptions made when using modern reference standards may be useful supplements in evaluating the age of subadults in prehistoric samples. The present study provides an internally consistent, population-specific measure of maturity for prehistoric Ohio valley Native Americans based on the seriation of dental development that may be used as a supplement to age-estimation. The developing dentition of 581 subadults from eight Ohio valley prehistoric-protohistoric groups was seriated within and among individuals resulting in a sequence of tooth development and a sequence of individuals from least to most mature. Dental maturity stages or sorting categories were then defined based on exclusive, easily observable, and highly repeatable tooth-formation stages. Tooth eruption (into occlusion), bone lengths, and fusion of skeletal elements are summarized by dental maturity stage. This procedure provides maturity estimates for skeletal features ordered by dental maturity stages derived from the same sample thus making explicit the relationship between dental and skeletal maturity.  相似文献

Total tRNA extracted from liver as well as from skeletal muscle of young, adult and old female albino rats showed quantitative variation with age. The amount of liver total tRNA was maximum in adult rats when compared to that in young and old ones, whose levels were almost the same. Transfer RNA from skeletal muscle showed a different pattern with age. It was maximum in young rats and showed a gradual decline with age. Transfer RNAs were aminoacylated using homologous synthetase preparations to study their qualitative variation during aging, which followed the trend of quantitative variation in both the tissues. Arginyl and glutamyl-tRNAs were fractionated from both the tissues at the three ages. Isoacceptor profile of glutamyl-tRNAs showed neither tissue specificity nor age-related change, whereas a definite change was found in the case of arginyl-tRNA isoacceptors in the two tissues during aging.  相似文献

Despite its potential importance in the reconstruction of hunting strategies and subsistence patterns, determining sex in zooarchaeological assemblages is a task that has been often neglected because the assemblages consist mainly of fragmentary bones. Only a limited amount of research has been focused on sexing individuals at archaeological sites. Although dimorphic elements in skeletal anatomy (e.g., horns) are the most widely used indicators for sexing, other skeletal parts, such as the pelvic acetabulum provide valuable information to identify sex. The present work builds upon previous research and indicates the most useful indicators in the pelvic acetabulum to distinguish sex in bovids, with the goal of providing an analytical basis to expand interpretations of carcass acquisition strategies by humans.  相似文献

Recently a number of lower-affinity fluorescent Ca2+ indicators have become available with principal absorbance bands at visible wavelengths. This article evaluates these indicators, as well as two shorter wavelength indicators, mag-fura-5 and mag-indo-1, for their suitability as rapid Ca2+ indicators in frog skeletal muscle fibers. With three lower-affinity tricarboxylate indicators (mag-fura-5, mag-indo-1, and magnesium orange), the change in fluorescence in response to an action potential (delta F) appeared to track the myoplasmic Ca2+ transient (delta[Ca2+]) without delay. With three lower-affinity tetracarboxylate indicators (BTC, calcium-orange-5N, and calcium-green-5N) and one tricarboxylate indicator (magnesium green), delta F responded to delta[Ca2+] with a small delay. Unfortunately, with the tetracarboxylate indicators, other problems were detected that appear to limit their usefulness as reliable Ca2+ indicators. Surprisingly, delta F from mag-fura-red, another tricarboxylate indicator, was biphasic (with 480 nm excitation), a feature that also greatly limits its usefulness. With several of the indicators, estimates were obtained for the myoplasmic value of KD, Ca (the indicator's dissociation constant for Ca2+) and found to be elevated severalfold in comparison with the value measured in a simple salt solution. These and other problems related to the quantitative use of Ca2+ indicators in the intracellular environment are evaluated and discussed.  相似文献

Phenotypic plasticity and genotype-environment interactions (GEI) play an important role in the evolution of life histories. Knowledge of the molecular genetic basis of plasticity and GEI provides insight into the underlying mechanisms of life-history changes in different environments. We used a genomewide single-nucleotide polymorphism map in a recombinant N2 x CB4856 inbred panel of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans to study the genetic control of phenotypic plasticity to temperature in four fitness-related traits, that is, age at maturity, fertility, egg size and growth rate. We mapped quantitative trait loci (QTL) for the respective traits at 12 and 24 degrees C, as well as their plasticities. We found genetic variation and GEI for age at maturity, fertility, egg size and growth rate. GEI in fertility and egg size was attributed to changes in rank order of reaction norms. In case of age at maturity and growth rate, GEI was caused mainly by differences in the among-line variance. In total, 11 QTLs were detected, five QTL at 12 degrees C and six QTL at 24 degrees C, which were associated with life-history traits. Five QTL associated with age at maturity, fertility and growth rate showed QTL x environment interaction. These colocalized with plasticity QTL for the respective traits suggesting allelic sensitivity to temperature. Further fine mapping, complementation analyses and gene silencing are planned to identify candidate genes underlying phenotypic plasticity for age at maturity, fertility and growth.  相似文献

Qualitative and quantitative alterations of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in the skeletal muscle from two patients with cirrhosis and severe asthenia have been studied. The 4977 bp (mtDNA(4977)) and the 7436 bp (mtDNA(7436)) mtDNA deletions, as well as other mtDNA deletions, revealed by long extension PCR (LX-PCR), were found in the two patients, whereas the 10,422 bp (mtDNA(10,422)) mtDNA deletion was absent. Altogether, the qualitative alterations of mtDNA in cirrhotic patients with severe asthenia were comparable to those of age-matched healthy individuals. The mtDNA content, on the contrary, was substantially decreased in both patients with respect to control. Such mtDNA depletion might be explained by an increased, disease-related, oxidative damage to mtDNA, which probably affects the replication of the mitochondrial genome as already suggested in other oxidative stress-associated diseases.  相似文献
