Development and reproduction of Iphiseiodes quadripilis (Banks) were evaluated on single food diets of pollen (Malephora crocea Jacquin [ice plant] or Quercus sp. [oak]), spider mites, [Eutetranychus banksi (McGregor) or Panonychus citri (McGregor) (Acari: Tetranychidae)], or the citrus rust mite Phyllocoptruta oleivora (Ashmead) (Acari: Eriophyidae). Experiments were conducted in an environmental chamber at 28 degrees +/- 1 degrees C, 14:10 (L:D) daylength, and 45% RH. I. quadripilis completed development and laid viable eggs that subsequently hatched on diets of either ice plant or oak pollen or eggs and motile stages of E. banksi. P. citri was acceptable as prey, but survival of larvae to adults was only 36%, whereas survival on E. banksi, ice plant pollen, and oak pollen was 48, 60, and 68%, respectively. The webbing produced by P. citri seemed to inhibit foraging behavior of I. quadripilis larvae and nymphs. Larvae of I. quadripilis developed only to the second nymphal instar on a diet of P. oleivora alone or water alone. Starved I. quadripilis females and deutonymphs were observed preying on the pink citrus rust mite, Aculops pelekassi (Keifer) (Eriophyidae). During 4-min observation trials, two series of I. quadripilis fed on 1.8 +/- 0.47 and 3.5 +/- 0.45 A. pelekassi motile stages after being starved for 6 and 24 h, respectively. I. quadripilis females did not prey on P. oleivora in arenas containing both rust mite species.  相似文献

The influence of feeding and temperature on life table parameters ofEuseius stipulatus (Athias-Henriot) andTyphlodromus phialatus Athias-Henriot was determined in laboratory tests. Both phytoseiids developed and reproduced readily when fed onCarpobrotus edulis (L.) pollen andPanonychus citri (McGregor) Intrinsic rates of increase (r m ) at 25°C forE. stipulatus andT. phialatus were 0.197 and 0.126, and, when fed onP. citri, 0.129 and 0.144, respectively.Tetranychus urticae Koch offered as prey allowed normal development and oviposition ofT. phialatus, but no eggs were laid byE. stipulatus when fed on this spider mite. Eggs and honeydew ofAleurothrixus floccosus Mask. furnished sufficient nutrition for development of immatures ofE. stipulatus. Larvae ofPlanoccocus citri Risso, and honeydew and eggs ofA. floccosus, allowed adult survival but no egg-laying of the predaceous mites.Lorryia formosa Cooreman was not a favoured prey species.Life tables were calculated forE. stipulatus fed on pollen andT. phialatus fed onP. citri at constant temperatures of 18, 25, and 32°C. Maximum development was reached at 32°C, withr m values of 0.225 forE. stipulatus and 0.179 forT. phialatus. In general, both phytoseiids showed medium to high total number of eggs per female and long oviposition periods when compared with other phytoseiid species. When mating took place at 32°C,E. stipulatus females were not able to lay eggs, thus suggesting an interference of high temperatures with fertilization in this species. No hatching was observed in eggs of either species when kept at relative humidities of 50% or lower. The possible significance of these responses is discussed in relation to population trends observed in the field.  相似文献

The aim of this study was todetermine the biology and reproductivepotential of Euseius scutalis(Athias-Henriot) (Acari: Phytoseiidae) atvarious temperatures. These data are of valuein relation to mass rearing and the developmentof population dynamics models. The developmenttime, survival and fecundity of E.scutalis were determined at 20, 25 and30 ± 1 °C, 65 ± 10% RH and 16:8photoperiod. Total development times of E.scutalis were 6.7, 4.9 and 4.2 days at 20, 25and 30 ± 1 °C, respectively, using adiet of all life stages of the spider mite Panonychus citri (McGregor) (Acari:Tetranychidae). In general, preoviposition andpostoviposition periods of E. scutaliswere shortened as temperature increased, butthe oviposition period was longer at 25 °C than at 20 and 30 °C. Theshortest survival time of E. scutalis, at30 °C, was 10.1 days, followed by 23.7days and 28.6 days at 20 and 25 °C,respectively. Mated females laid on average1.1, 1.4 and 1.7 eggs per female per day and21.5, 39.7 and 17.1 eggs over their entire lifetime at 20, 25 and 30 °C, respectively. The sex ratios of E. scutalis were2.11/1, 2.24/1 and 2.11/1 female/male at 20, 25and 30 °C, respectively. The intrinsicrate of natural increase (r m) increasedwith rising temperatures from 0.166 at 20 °C to 0.295 females/female/day at 30 °C. The net reproductive rate (R 0)was highest at 25 °C (26.03females/female) and lowest at 30 °C(12.95 females/female). Mean generation time(T 0) was longest at 25 °C (17.50days) and shortest (9.53 days) at 30 °C.  相似文献

Phytoseiid mites which contaminated the spider mite colony and interfered with the mass-rearing of spider mites were controlled by dipping in hot water. Immersion for 60 s in water of 50°C killed all stages ofAmblyseius fallacis (Garman),A. womersleyi Schicha andPhytoseiulus persimilis (Athias-Henriot) (Acari: Phytoseiidae). Only approximately 0.3% of theA. womersleyi eggs hatched, and this seems negligible. The populations ofTetranychus kanzawai Kishida andT. urticae (Koch) (Acari: Tetranychidae) were reduced. However, they recovered well. Although this treatment resulted in the withering of some soybean seedlings, the next trifoliate leaf to be produced was normal. A very satisfactory result was obtained when this technique was applied to the mass-rearing system.  相似文献

Differences in responsiveness to potential prey and pollen were tested in the facultative predator,Euseius tularensis Congdon. Following isolation without food for 16 h, adult female mites were observed with one of the following potential foods: pollen ofMalephora crocea (Jacquin) Schwantes,Scirtothrips citri (Moulton) 2nd instar larvae,Tetranychus pacificus McGregor nymphs and ♂,Panonychus citri (McGregor) nymphs and ♂,E. hibisci (Chant) larvae, andE. tularensis larvae. Responses were compared using the proportion of encounters that resulted in consumption. This proportion was highest when pollen was encountered, followed byS. citri andT. pacificus. Consumption was much lower in response toP. citri and congeneric larvae. WhenS. citri larvae were encountered a 2nd time, 1 to 2 h after the initial capture and consumption, responsiveness increased to a level equal to the response observed with pollen. These results suggest thatE. tularensis is a more effective biological control agent of citrus thrips (S. citri) than of citrus red mite (P. citri).  相似文献

Some aspects of the biologies ofTyphlodromus annectens De Leon andT. porresi McMurtry were studied at 25°C. The tetranychid mitesOligonychus punicae (Hirst),Panonychus citri (McGregor) andTetranychus pacificus McGregor were all favorable foods for development ofTy. annectens, whereas a low survival rate of immatures and no oviposition occurred on pollen.Tetranychus pacificus appeared to be a less favorable prey than the other two tetranychids forTy. porresi. Typhlodromus annectens, a very small species, andTy. occidentalis, a medium-sized species used for comparison, consumed significantly moreTe. pacificus larvae than did the medium-sizedTy. porreso. Comparing weights of fed and starved individuals suggested thatTy. occidentalis consumed the greatest volume of food material per time unit. The results are compared with those of previous studies of species in theoccidentalis species group ofTyphlodromus.  相似文献

The orange bagworm (OBW), Cryptothelea gloverii (Packard) (Lepidoptera: Psychidae) was previously reported feeding on citrus fruit and foliage and preying upon the camphor scale Pseudaonidia duplex (Cockerell) (Homoptera: Coccidae). In this study using laboratory assays, OBW preyed upon citrus rust mite, Phyllocoptruta oleivora (Ashmead) (Acari: Eriophyidae) and consumed eggs and adults of both P. oleivora and Panonychus citri (McGregor) (Acari: Tetranychidae), two important pest mites on Florida citrus. OBW was also observed to feed on the purple scale, Lepidosaphes beckii (Newman) (Homoptera: Diaspididae) and on a fungus (Penicillium sp.). OBW fed on orange and grapefruit leaves by starting from the border and eating part of the leaf, by chewing holes, or consuming the outer epithelium of either the axial or abaxial surface of the leaf without penetrating through the leaf. OBW was observed in orange orchards in association with fruit extensively russeted by P. oleivora feeding. Laboratory assays revealed that OBW larvae preferred to feed on oranges infested with P. oleivora rather than on clean fruits that were free of mite feeding damage. Feeding damage to citrus fruit by OBW larvae results in one to several holes being eaten into the rind or albedo, without damage to the fruit sacs.  相似文献

The biology and life table parameters of Agistemus industani Gonzalez, A. cyprius Gonzalez, and A. floridanus Gonzalez (Acari: Stigmaeidae) were studied under laboratory conditions using two food sources: Panonychus citri (McGregor) eggs or ice plant, Malephora crocea (Jacquin) Schwantes pollen at 25 degrees C. The larval, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages of A. industani fed on citrus red mite eggs. All active stages of A. industani, except the larva, fed on all P. citri stages and the larval stage could not feed on P. citri adults. All immature stages of A. industani fed on M. crocea pollen. Agistemus cyprius larvae fed on P. citri eggs and larvae or ice plant pollen. The nymphal stages fed on P. citri eggs, larvae, and protonymphs but not deutonymphs or adults while A. cyprius deutonymphs and adults fed on all P. citri stages. Adult and nymphal stages of A. cyprius fed on ice plant pollen and successfully completed their development while A. floridanus did not. Agistemus floridanus larvae fed only on P. citri eggs, while the other stages fed on P. citri eggs, larvae, and protonymphs. The developmental times from egg to adult for A. industani and A. cyprius when fed M. crocea pollen were 11.3 and 13.4 days, respectively. Agistemus floridanus was unable to complete its life cycle on a diet of only M. crocea pollen. Agistemus industani, A. cyprius, and A. floridanus completed development from egg to adult in 11.7, 13.8, and 10.8 days, respectively, when fed P. citri eggs. The intrinsic rate of increase (r(m)) values for A. cyprius and A. industani were 0.0311 and 0.1201 per day on the pollen diet. The net reproductive rate (Ro) was 3.58 for A. cyprius and 10.07 for A. industani with generation times (T) of 45.2 and 35.1 days, respectively, on the ice plant pollen diet. The r(m) values for A. cyprius, A. floridanus, and A. industani on the P. citri egg only diet were: 0.0562, 0.1001, and 0.1031 per day, respectively. The Ro values for each species fed P. citri eggs only were: 6.36, 7.90, and 18.70 for A. cyprius, A. floridanus, and A. industani and the generation times (T) for each of the three species were: 35.2, 29.9 and 37.8 days, respectively.  相似文献

Stethorus japonicusKamiya (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is an indigenous ladybird beetle in Japan, which feeds on many spider mite species. We evaluated the development, survivorship and life-history parameters of this lady beetle on a diet of eggs of the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch (red form) (Acari: Tetranychidae). In addition, the effect of short photoperiod on its reproduction was assessed. Survival rates from egg to adult were more than 71% at temperatures between 17.5 and 30 °C. The highest immature mortality was 100% at 35 °C followed by 76% at 15 °C and 52% at 32.5 °C. The lower threshold temperature for development from egg to egg-laying adult was 13.0 °C and the thermal constant was calculated as 238.7° days. Based on these data, the maximum number of generations that could complete development in a year under field conditions in Ibaraki, central Japan, would be between five and seven. The intrinsic rates of natural increase (rm) were 0.093 at 20 °C, 0.156 at 25 °C and 0.241 at 30 °C. Reproductive diapause was induced at photoperiods with light phases shorter than 13 h at 18 °C.  相似文献

Field samples and experiments conducted in apple orchards in the south of France showed that Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) searched for prey on the trees and in the ground cover as late as mid-November 1993, and at least as early in the spring as the end of February 1994. Overwintering females fed, expanded and produced viable eggs within 7.9±0.3 (SE) days given the natural light regime, adequate food and temperatures of 17.0±20.6°C. The first generation of N. californicus developed in the field during March and April 1994. N. californicus nymphs, females and males readily moved over bare ground and through a grass ground cover to trap plants located on stakes 1 m above the ground. In the laboratory, the rate of movement of adult females on 0.5 mm copper wire was a linear function of temperature above a threshold of 11.9±0.9°C. At 25°C they travelled 10 m per h. The migration rate of N. californicus to trap plants on stakes placed in an orchard 13 Apr. increased in 2 weeks from 0.07 to 0.57 predators/trap plant/degree-day, while the migration rate to plants placed directly in the ground cover was 1.45 predators/trap plant/degree-day. The largest population of N. californicus in April occurred on Barley, Hordeum murinum L. This plant produces pollen in April and May, and may be useful in biocontrol programs.  相似文献

Development duration, mortality and oviposition rate ofEuseius tularensis (Congdon),E. stipulatus (Athias-Henriot) andE. hibisci (Chant) were determined on three basic foods (pollen of iceplant, Pacific spider mite and citrus red mite) in the presence and absence of supplementary foods (honeydew from aphids and whiteflies). The studies were conducted in the laboratory at a constant temperature of 25°C. The mean duration of each development stage and total development time did not differe significantly between treatments with and without supplementary food, regardless of species and basic foods. The mortality of the immature stages of the threeEuseius species was generally higher in the absence of supplementary foods than in the presence of these foods, but differences were not significant (P=0.05). Oviposition rates generally were significantly higher in the presence of supplementary foods. The basic food was the most important factor affecting development, survival and oviposition rate; the most favorable food was pollen and the least favorable was citrus red mite. The development and oviposition rates differed somewhat among the threeEuseis, species on the same food or food combination.  相似文献

Field specimens ofEuseius mesembrinus (Dean) from Florida and Texas were found to be morphologically similar regardless of differences in the lengths of dorsal shield setae or the St IV macroseta. Populations from both states were reproductively compatible. Taxonomic characters ofE. mesembrinus were illustrated using both light and scanning electron microscopy. Lengths of dorsal shield setae and the macroseta on the tarsus of leg IV of field-collected specimens from Florida and Texas, laboratory cultures, and their crosses (F1) showed inconsistent variance. Multivariate analysis of variance and canonical discriminate analysis revealed that the source of variance can be attributed to ecological factors. The results suggest that the two populations are the same species and support the possibility that the Florida population originated from Texas.Florida Agricultural Experiment Station Journal Series No. R-00380.  相似文献

The ecology and physiology of a free-living mite species Antarcticola meyeri, Cryptostigmata, rarely discovered in the Continental Antarctic Zone, were studied near the Japanese Antarctic Base, Syowa Station. The distribution of this mite species correlated noticeably with the distribution of its food, the imperfect lichen species, which grow in moss carpets. Within a limited habitat, this mite species preferred dry carpets to wet carpets. Low humidity appeared disadvantageous to the species at high temperatures (ca. 30°C), but at low temperatures (ca. -25°C), low humidity appeared advantageous. This may explain why this species preferred dry carpets. The mean supercooling point of starved individuals was -30.6°C (nymphs) to-33.9°C (eggs). When fed with lichens, however, it was significantly raised, probably because the gut contents functioned as ice nucleators or contained ice-nucleating agents. Acclimation to low temperatures significantly lowered the supercooling point of larvae but not of other growth stages.  相似文献

The citrus red mite, Panonychus citri (McGregor) (Acari: Tetranychidae), is an important pest worldwide. Previous studies showed that acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACCase) may be a critical target of spirodiclofen, a recently introduced insecticide. Therefore, we cloned the PcACCase gene and obtained a full‐length cDNA (Genbank accession number KJ675439 ). The open reading frame was 6 972 bp, coding for 2 323 amino acids. The PcACCase protein had a theoretical molecular weight of 262.82 kDa and an isoelectric point of 6.31, and it contained six conserved domains and one low‐complexity region. Quantitative real‐time PCR showed that spirodiclofen can up‐regulate the expression levels of ACCase mRNA during all four developmental stages.  相似文献

The intrinsic rate of natural increase(rm) is useful to estimate the populationgrowth potential of insects and mites, whichmay help predict the outcome of pest-naturalenemy interactions. This study was conductedto determine how 12 constant temperatureregimes between 10–38 °C (± 0.5 °C) may differentially affect therm of the McDaniel spider mite, Tetranychus mcdanieli McGregor (Acarina: Tetranychidea), a common pest of raspberry, andits coccinellid predator, Stethoruspunctillum Weise (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). Tetranychus mcdanieli survived tomaturity in the 14–36 °C range, comparedto the 14–32 °C range for S.punctillum. Survival above 24 °Cremained high for the spider mite, butdecreased markedly for the coccinellid. Tetranychus mcdanieli's range forreproduction was similar to its survival range, but S. punctillum failed to reproduce at14 °C and reproduced only poorlyat 16 °C. Offspring production peakedat 24 °C for both T. mcdanieli(average 152 eggs per female), and S.punctillum (280 eggs per female). At alltemperatures suitable for reproduction, femalelongevity of the coccinellid was greater thanthe spider mite, which was characterized byearlier/faster reproduction than thecoccinellid. As temperature increased, therm followed a typical asymmetricaldome-shape pattern, with maximum values of0.196 d–1 and 0.385 d–1at 30 °C and 34 °C, for S.punctillum and T. mcdanieli, respectively. For each species, therm-temperature relation was successfullymodelled using a curvilinear regressionequation previously shown to predictdevelopment rate. In both species, thedevelopment rate response to temperature has amajor influence on the temperature-rmrelationship. In the 16–32 °C rangesuitable for population growth of both species, the rm of T. mcdanieliwas 1.9 (30 °C) to 8 (16 °C) times greaterthan S. punctillum. These growthpotential ratios are consistently in favor ofthe prey, suggesting a limitation of thecoccinellid with respect to its capacity totrack T. mcdanieli populations. However, under short season conditions, the inferiorreproductive dynamics of S. punctillum'svs. spider mite prey should not have aprevailing influence in determining impact, andmay be compensated by high voracity incombination with a strong aggregativeresponse.  相似文献

Intraguild predation (IGP) is defined as the killing and eating of prey species by a predator that also can utilize the resources of the prey. It is mainly reported among carnivores that share common herbivorous prey. However, a large chewing herbivore could prey upon sedentary and/or micro herbivores in addition to utilizing a host plant. To investigate such coincidental IGP, we observed the behavioral responses of the polyphagous mite Tetranychus kanzawai Kishida (Acari: Tetranychidae) when its host plant Cayratia japonica (Thunb.) Gagnep. (Vitaceae) was attacked by hornworms, Theretra japonica Boisduval (Sphingidae) and T. oldenlandiae Fabricius (Sphingidae). We also examined an interaction between the oligophagous mite Panonychus citri McGregor (Acari: Tetranychidae) and caterpillars of the swallowtail Papilio xuthus L. (Papilionidae) that share citrus plants as their main food source. Although all T. kanzawai and some active stage P. citri tried to escape from the coincidental IGP, some were consumed together with eggs, quiescent mites, and host plant leaves, suggesting that coincidental IGP occurs on spider mites in the wild. Moreover, neither hornworms nor swallowtail caterpillars distinguished between spider mite-infested and uninfested leaves, suggesting that the mite-infested leaves do not discourage caterpillar feeding. The reasons that the mites have no effective defense against coincidental IGP other than escaping are discussed.  相似文献

Low air temperature accompanied with high humidity is effective for long-term cold storage of the predatory mite Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) (Acari: Phytoseiidae). To further improve this storage method, we investigated the effect of pre-storage nutrition on survival during storage and on post-storage quality in terms of survival, oviposition, and progeny viability. The predatory mite was fed from the egg to adult stage on the diapausing two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae), non-diapausing spider mites, or Japanese pear pollen, Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai. Newly emerged N. californicus adult females and males were mated, and then both were stored at 7.5 °C and a vapor pressure deficit of 0.0 kPa for up to 75 days. Survival during storage and post-storage quality was significantly better with the diapausing spider mite diet than with the other diets. No effects on the survival or sex ratio of the progeny of the stored adults were observed, regardless of diet or storage duration. Providing diapausing spider mites as a pre-storage diet therefore significantly improves the long-term storage of N. californicus. We discuss the possibility that ingestion of the cryoprotectants, antioxidants, and energy reserves that are present in rich amounts in diapausing spider mites mitigates chilling injury.  相似文献

The effects of cassava exudate and prey densities on reproduction and survival of the predatory mite, Typhlodromalus limonicus (Garman & McGregor) (Acari: Phytoseiidae), were investigated in the laboratory. Females were provided either cassava exudate ad lib. daily, low or high numbers of the cassava green mite prey, Mononychellus tanajoa (Bondar) (Acari: Tetranychidae) daily, or exudate for 5 or 10 days before switching to a low or high prey diet. Females fed only exudate laid no eggs. Females fed exudate before prey experienced a significant decrease (30%) in the number of eggs laid compared to females fed high numbers of prey daily. The reduction in fecundity was the result of prolonged preoviposition periods (2.0 days on prey daily vs 4.0 days on exudate before prey) and reduced number of eggs laid per female per day (1.7 eggs per female per day on prey daily vs 0.4 eggs per female per day on exudate before prey). Females fed only exudate had a greater survival rate and longevity than females fed prey daily or females fed exudate before a diet of prey. These results suggest that T. limonicus can survice for a limited period on cassava exudate during periods of low prey availability, but requires prey to complete oögenesis and propagate the population.  相似文献

The developmental time of the predatory mite Blattisocius tarsalis (Berlese) (Acari: Ascidae) was investigated at temperatures of 15, 21 and 25°C and 75% r.h. Eggs 1–3 days old of Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lep.: Pyralidae), killed by freezing, were used as food. Mean developmental times were found to be 22.4, 8.5 and 7.0 days, respectively. Within the investigated thermal limits the developmental rate showed a linear relationship with temperature and the corresponding thermal threshold for development was calculated to 10.2°C.  相似文献
