Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) via the nitrite pathway and anaerobic-anoxic-enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) are two processes that can significantly reduce the energy and COD demand for nitrogen and phosphorus removal. The combination of these two processes has the potential of achieving simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal with a minimal requirement for COD. A lab-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was operated in alternating anaerobic-aerobic mode with a low dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration (0.5 mg/L) during the aerobic period, and was demonstrated to accomplish nitrification, denitrification, and phosphorus removal. Under anaerobic conditions, COD was taken up and converted to polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), accompanied by phosphorus release. In the subsequent aerobic stage, PHA was oxidized and phosphorus was taken up to <0.5 mg/L by the end of the cycle. Ammonia was also oxidized during the aerobic period, but without accumulation of nitrite or nitrate in the system, indicating the occurrence of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification. However, off-gas analysis showed that the final denitrification product was mainly nitrous oxide (N(2)O), not N(2). Further experimental results demonstrated that nitrogen removal was via nitrite, not nitrate. These experiments also showed that denitrifying glycogen-accumulating organisms (DGAOs), rather than denitrifying polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (DPAOs), were responsible for the denitrification activity.  相似文献

Different alternative configurations and strategies for the simultaneous biological removal of organic matter and nutrients (N and P) in wastewater have been proposed in the literature. This work demonstrates a new successful strategy to bring in enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) to a conventional nitrification/denitrification system by means of bioaugmentation with an enriched culture of phosphorus accumulating organisms (PAO). This strategy was tested in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR), where an 8 h configuration with 3 h anoxic, 4.5 h aerobic and 25 min of settling confirmed that nitrification, denitrification and PAO activity could be maintained for a minimum of 60 days of operation after the bioaugmentation step. The successful bioaugmentation strategy opens new possibilities for retrofitting full-scale WWTP originally designed for only nitrification/denitrification. These systems could remove P simultaneously to COD and N if they were bioaugmented with waste purge of an anaerobic/aerobic SBR operated in parallel treating part of the influent wastewater.  相似文献

Phosphorus and nitrogen are the important eutrophication nutrients. They are removed in the anoxic/oxic reactor through simultaneous precipitation and biological nitrogen removal. The effect of alum a commonly used simultaneous precipitant on biological nitrification and denitrification are investigated in the present study. Simultaneous removal of phosphorus was carried out using the coagulant alum Al2(SO4)3·14H2O at 2.2 mol ratio. Before the start of simultaneous precipitation the nitrification rate of the A/O reactor was found to be 0.05 g N-NH4 +/g VSS/d. It starts to decrease with increase in coagulant dosage. The nitrification rate for alum dosage 97.13 mg/L was 0.38 g N- NH4 +/g VSS/d. There was no accumulation of nitrate in anoxic tank. The nitrogen removal efficiency of the reactor was affected and it fell from 88 to 78%. There was a slight decrease in effluent COD from 16∼20 mg/L to 8∼12 mg/L after the introduction of simultaneous precipitation into the reactor. The usage of alum as a simultaneous precipitant in the anoxic/oxic reactor was limited due to its inhibition on nitrification. Alum did not have any affect over denitrification process.  相似文献

Granular sludge for simultaneous nitrification, denitrification and phosphorus removal (SNDPR) was generated and studied in a lab-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR). The SBR was monitored for 450 days during which the biomass was transformed from flocs to granules, which persisted for the last 130 days of operation. Short sludge settling time was employed to successfully generate the granules, with the 10th and 90th percentiles of diameter being 0.7 and 1.6 mm respectively. Good phosphorus removal and nitrification occurred throughout the SBR operation but only when granules were generated were denitrification and full nutrient removal complete. Fluorescence in situ hybridization and oxygen microsensors were used to study the granules at a microscale. Accumulibacter spp. (a polyphosphate-accumulating organism, PAO) and Competibacter spp. (a glycogen non-polyphosphate-accumulating organism, GAO) were the most abundant microbial community members (together 74% of all Bacteria ) and both are capable of denitrification. In the aerobic period of the SBR operation, the oxygen penetrated 250 μm into the granules leaving large anoxic zones in the centre part where denitrification can occur. In granules > 500 μm in diameter, Accumulibacter spp. was dominant in the outermost 200 μm region of the granule while Competibacter spp. dominated in the granule central zone. The stratification of these two populations between the outer aerobic and inner anoxic part of the granule was highly significant ( P  < 0.003). We concluded that the GAO Competibacter spp., and not the PAO Accumulibacter spp., was responsible for denitrification in this SBR. This is undesirable for SNDPR as savings in carbon demand cannot be fulfilled with phosphorus removal and denitrification being achieved by different groups of bacteria.  相似文献

To maximize nitrogen utilization rates during nitrification and denitrification in a simultaneous reaction for direct nitrogen removal from ammonia–nitrogen in a single reactor, two different carriers were applied that immobilized nitrifiers and denitrifiers separately. With the optimized DO concentration and mixing ratio of immobilization carriers, ammonium–nitrogen was successfully removed as designed until the middle phase of treatment where nitrogen removal rate was higher than 83% of the theoretical value, although an imbalance between nitrification and denitrification occurred at a later phase of treatment where residual nitrate–nitrogen concentration was less than 2 mg/l. The new approach using two different carriers to immobilize nitrifiers and denitrifiers separately was proved useful for controlling both nitrification and denitrification rates, enabling the utilization of maximum treatment ability of both nitrifiers and denitrifiers in a single reactor for direct nitrogen removal from ammonium–nitrogen.  相似文献

The recently described process of simultaneous nitrification, denitrification and phosphorus removal (SNDPR) has a great potential to save capital and operating costs for wastewater treatment plants. However, the presence of glycogen-accumulating organisms (GAOs) and the accumulation of nitrous oxide (N(2)O) can severely compromise the advantages of this process. In this study, these two issues were investigated using a lab-scale sequencing batch reactor performing SNDPR over a 5-month period. The reactor was highly enriched in polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs) and GAOs representing around 70% of the total microbial community. PAOs were the dominant population at all times and their abundance increased, while GAOs population decreased over the study period. Anoxic batch tests demonstrated that GAOs rather than denitrifying PAOs were responsible for denitrification. N(2)O accumulated from denitrification and more than half of the nitrogen supplied in a reactor cycle was released into the atmosphere as N(2)O. After mixing SNDPR sludge with other denitrifying sludge, N(2)O present in the bulk liquid was reduced immediately if external carbon was added. We therefore suggest that the N(2)O accumulation observed in the SNDPR reactor is an artefact of the low microbial diversity facilitated by the use of synthetic wastewater with only a single carbon source.  相似文献

The biological removal of nitrogen and phosphorus from nutrient-rich abattoir wastewater using granular sludge has been investigated. A lab-scale sequencing batch reactor, seeded with granular sludge developed using synthetic wastewater, was operated for 13 months under alternating anaerobic and aerobic conditions. It is demonstrated that the granules could be sustained and indeed further developed with the use of abattoir wastewater. The organic, nitrogen, and phosphorus loading rates applied were 2.7 gCOD L(-1) day(-1), 0.43 gN L(-1) day(-1), and 0.06 gP L(-1) day(-1), respectively. The removal efficiency of soluble COD, soluble nitrogen and soluble phosphorus were 85%, 93%, and 89%, respectively. However, the high suspended solids in the effluent limited the overall removal efficiency to 68%, 86%, and 74% for total COD, TN, and TP, respectively. This good nutrient removal was achieved through the process known as simultaneous nitrification, denitrification, and phosphorus removal, likely facilitated by the presence of large anoxic zones in the center of the granules. The removal of nitrogen was likely via nitrite optimizing the use of the limited COD available in the wastewater. Accumulibacter spp. were found to be responsible for most of the denitrification, further reducing the COD requirement for nitrogen and phosphorus removal. Mineral precipitation was evaluated and was not found to significantly contribute to the overall nutrient removal. It is also shown that the minimum HRT in a granular sludge system is not governed by the sludge settleability, as is the case with floccular sludge systems, but likely by the limitations associated with the transfer of substrates in granules.  相似文献

Abstract

This study critically evaluates the biological processes and techniques applied to remove nitrogen and phosphorus from the anaerobic supernatant produced from the treatment of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) and from its co-digestion with other biodegradable organic waste (BOW) streams. The wide application of anaerobic digestion for the treatment of several organic waste streams results in the production of high quantities of anaerobic effluents. Such effluents are characterized by high nutrient content, because organic and particulate nitrogen and phosphorus are hydrolyzed in the anaerobic digestion process. Consequently, adequate post-treatment is required in order to comply with the existing land application and discharge legislation in the European Union countries. This may include physicochemical and biological processes, with the latter being more advantageous due to their lower cost. Nitrogen removal is accomplished through the conventional nitrification/denitrification, nitritation/denitritation and the complete autotrophic nitrogen removal process; the latter is accomplished by nitritation coupled with the anoxic ammonium oxidation process. As anaerobic digestion effluents are characterized by low COD/TKN ratio, conventional denitrification/nitrification is not an attractive option; short-cut nitrogen removal processes are more promising. Both suspended and attached growth processes have been employed to treat the anaerobic supernatant. Specifically, the sequencing batch reactor, the membrane bioreactor, the conventional activated sludge and the moving bed biofilm reactor processes have been investigated. Physicochemical phosphorus removal via struvite precipitation has been extensively examined. Enhanced biological phosphorus removal from the anaerobic supernatant can take place through the sequencing anaerobic/aerobic process. More recently, denitrifying phosphorus removal via nitrite or nitrate has been explored. The removal of phosphorus from the anaerobic supernatant of OFMSW is an interesting research topic that has not yet been explored. At the moment, standardization in the design of facilities that treat anaerobic supernatant produced from the treatment of OFMSW is still under development. To move toward this direction, it is first necessary to assess the performance of alternative treatment options. It study concentrates existing data regarding the characteristics of the anaerobic supernatant produced from the treatment of OFMSW and from their co-digestion with other BOW. This provides data documenting the effect of the anaerobic digestion operating conditions on the supernatant quality and critically evaluates alternative options for the post-treatment of the liquid fraction produced from the anaerobic digestion process.  相似文献

The performance of laboratory-scale attached growth (AG) and suspended growth (SG) membrane bioreactors (MBRs) was evaluated in treating synthetic wastewater simulating high strength domestic wastewater. This study investigated the influence of sponge suspended carriers in AG-MBR system, occupying 15% reactor volume, on the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP), and compared it to that of SG-MBR. Results showed that the removal efficiencies of COD, TN and TP in AG-MBR were 98%, 89% and 58%, respectively as compared to 98%, 74% and 38%, respectively in SG-MBR. Improved TN removal in AG-MBR systems was primarily based on simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) process. These results infer that the presence of small bio-particles having higher microbial activity and the growth of complex biomass captured within the suspended sponge carriers resulted in improved TN and TP removal in AG-MBR.  相似文献

The biological nitrification-denitrification process is used extensively for removal of ammonia nitrogen from wastewaters. Saves in aeration, organic matter (for denitrification) and surplus sludge are achievable if nitrite accumulation is possible in the nitrification step. In this paper, operational parameters were studied for each process for maximum nitrite accumulation in the nitrification step and nitrite adaptation in the denitrification step. Nitrite accumulation during nitrification can be controlled by the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration, presenting a maximum of 65% at around 0.7 mg DO/L. Denitrification can be adapted to nitrite and the process is stable if nitrite in the reactor is keep low. The performance of a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) and an up flow sludge blanket reactor (USB) were compared. Once the operational parameters were established, a CSTR for nitrification and an USB reactor for denitrification were operated in series for 25 days. The process was stable and a steady state was maintained for 20 days, and 93.5% of overall nitrogen removal was achieved in the nitrification-denitrification via the nitrite process.  相似文献

In the present study a laboratory scale anoxic/oxic reactor was used to remove the important eutrophication nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen from synthetic domestic wastewater. Phosphorus was removed through simultaneous precipitation and was carried out using the coagulant ferrous sulphate FeSO4 · 7H2O. Total phosphorus in the effluent was controlled to below 1 mg/l using a ferrous to phosphorus molar ratio of 2.1. pH after the addition of coagulant plays a major role in determining the molar ratio of the precipitant. Nitrogen was removed biologically in the anoxic/oxic system and the effect of simultaneous precipitation on nitrification and denitrification was investigated. The nitrification rate of the system remained unaffected during simultaneous precipitation and varied from 0.046 to 0.059 g N–NH4 +/g VSS/day. Denitrification was complete and was not affected by the coagulation process. The nitrogen removal efficiency varied from 78% to 85%. COD removal efficiency was not affected during simultaneous precipitation and was varied from 94% to 98%. The highly efficient nitrogen removal in the presence of simultaneous precipitant ferrous sulphate makes the process an ideal option for nutrient removal.  相似文献

In the Completely Autotrophic Nitrogen removal Over Nitrite (CANON) process, aerobic and anaerobic ammonia oxidizing bacteria cooperate to remove ammonia in one oxygen-limited reactor. Kinetic studies, microsensor analysis, and fluorescence in situ hybridization on CANON biomass showed a partial differentiation of processes and organisms within and among aggregates. Under normal oxygen-limited conditions ( approximately 5 microM O2), aerobic ammonia oxidation (nitrification) was restricted to an outer shell (<100 microm) while anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) was found in the central anoxic parts. Larger type aggregates (>500 microm) accounted for 68% of the anammox potential whereas 65% of the nitrification potential was found in the smaller aggregates (<500 microm). Analysis with O2 and NO2- microsensors showed that the thickness of the activity zones varied as a function of bulk O2 and NO2- concentrations and flow rate.  相似文献

AIMS: To develop a laboratory-scale autotrophic membrane-immobilized biofilm reactor to remove nitrogen from drinking water. METHODS AND RESULTS: A polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) immobilized biofilm, attached to the surface of a silicone tube, was used as the basis of a bioreactor for simultaneous nitrification and denitrification of water. The bioreactor was aerated with air to supply oxygen for nitrification. Pure hydrogen was supplied to the silicone tube and diffused through the membrane wall to feed the biofilm for autotrophic denitrification. The bioreactor was effective for the simultaneous nitrification and denitrification of water after a short period of acclimation, while the biofilm exhibited good resistance to the inhibition of denitrification by dissolved oxygen; the denitrification rate decreased by only 8% as the dissolved oxygen increased from 2 mg l(-1) to saturation. CONCLUSIONS: By using PVA crosslinked with sodium nitrate to entrap nitrifying and denitrifying sludge on the surface of a silicone tube, a novel bioreactor for simultaneous nitrification and denitrification was developed. In addition to performing as an immobilizing agent to strengthen the biofilm, PVA protected the denitrifying microorganisms to reduce the inhibition by dissolved oxygen under aerobic condition. Therefore, nitrification and denitrification occurred simultaneously within the biofilm. Furthermore, the immobilization technique shortened the acclimation period of the bioreactor. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The described space saving and simple to operate bioreactor for nitrogen removal performed autotrophic denitrification to solve the problem of residual carbon in heterotrophic denitrification, and thus is suitable for removing nitrogen from drinking water.  相似文献

The performance of a 10 L sequencing batch reactor (SBR) treating slaughterhouse wastewater was examined at ambient temperature. The influent wastewater comprised 4672+/-952 mg chemical oxygen demand (COD)/L, 356+/-46 mg total nitrogen (TN)/L and 29+/-10 mg total phosphorus (TP)/L. The duration of a complete cycle was 8 h and comprised four phases: fill (7 min), react (393 min), settle (30 min) and draw/idle (50 min). During the react phase, the reactor was intermittently aerated with an air supply of 0.8L/min four times at 50-min intervals, 50 min each time. At an influent organic loading rate of 1.2g COD/(Ld), average effluent concentrations of COD, TN and TP were 150 mg/L, 15 mg/L and 0.8 mg/L, respectively. This represented COD, TN and TP removals of 96%, 96% and 99%, respectively. Phase studies show that biological phosphorus uptake occurred in the first aeration period and nitrogen removal took place in the following reaction time by means of partial nitrification and denitrification. The nitrogen balance analysis indicates that denitrification and biomass synthesis contributed to 66% and 34% of TN removed, respectively.  相似文献

Aerobic granular sludge is a new type of microbe auto-immobilization technology; in this paper, short-cut nitrification and denitrification were effectively combined with the granular sludge technology. Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification granules were developed in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) using synthetic wastewater with a high concentration of ammonia nitrogen at 25 °C with a dissolved oxygen concentration above 2.0 mg/L and a 15 days sludge retention time. The characteristics of the sludge and the removal efficiency were studied, and the removal mechanisms of the pollutants and the process of short-cut nitrification were analyzed. The average granule diameter of the granular sludge was 704.0 μm. The removal rates of pollutants and the accumulation rate of nitrite in the SBR were studied. During treatment of wastewater with a high concentration of ammonia nitrogen, simultaneous nitrification, and denitrification and the stripping process could contribute to the removal of total nitrogen. The high pH value, the high concentration of free ammonia, and the delamination of granular sludge were the main factors contributing to the short-cut nitrification property of granular sludge in the reaction process.  相似文献

The simultaneous partial nitrification, anammox and denitrification (SNAD) process for treating domestic wastewater was investigated in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). The SBR was operated with air flow rate of 500 L h?1 at 30 °C. Domestic wastewater was used as influent and Kaldnes rings were used as biomass carriers. In the beginning, long aeration condition was implemented to cultivate nitrification biofilm. Afterwards, intermittent aerobic condition was conducted during the cycle operation. The influent organic matter loading rate was improved by reducing the aeration and mixing times. Consequently, when the SNAD biofilm reactor was fed with the organic matter loading rate of 0.77 (kg COD m?3 d?1), the bio-bubbles appeared in the reactor and the total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) removal efficiency decreased. After the organic matter loading rate decreased to 0.67 (kg COD m?3 d?1), the reactor showed excellent nitrogen removal performance. The TIN removal efficiency varied between 80 and 90 %, and the average TIN removal loading rate was 0.22 (kg TIN m?3 d?1). Additionally, the scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation confirmed that the anammox bacteria located in the inner part of the carriers. Finally, the microbial community analysis of 16S rRNA gene cloning revealed that the anammox bacteria on the carriers consisted of three main genuses: Candidatus Brocadia sp., Candidatus Brocadia caroliniensis and Candidatus Brocadia fulgida.  相似文献

Nitrification and denitrification are important microbiological reactions of nitrogen. In this work, the kinetics of these reactions have been investigated based on a Monod-type expression involving two growth limiting substrates: ammonium nitrogen and dissolved oxygen for nitrification and nitrate nitrogen and dissolved organic carbon for denitrification. The kinetic constants and yield coefficients were evaluated for both these reactions. Past experimental work was used to determine the constants for the nitrification reaction. For the denitrification reaction, experiments were performed in a stirred tank reactor under conditions such that only one substrate was growth limiting. Steady-state values of the substrate concentrations in the reactor were determined at various dilution rates. These data were analyzed to obtain the kinetic and stoichiometric constants. From these constants it was concluded that in the range of nitrate nitrogen concentrations encountered in waste water, the denitrification reaction can be considered a first-order reaction. It was also found that three times as much organic carbon is required as nitrate nitrogen for complete nitrogen removal.  相似文献

N-removal in a granular sludge sequencing batch airlift reactor   总被引:25,自引:0,他引:25
The removal of N-compounds in the sequencing batch airlift reactor (SBAR) containing granular sludge was studied under conditions of decreased dissolved oxygen (DO). A simulation model was developed to describe and evaluate the effects of several process conditions in the SBAR on N-removal performance. The model described the experimental data reasonable well. It has been shown that nitrification, denitrification, and removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) can occur simultaneously in a granular sludge SBR. It has also been shown that the exact location of the autotrophic biomass influences the net N-removal. The distribution of the autotrophic biomass is influenced by the DO in the reactor. The optimal DO value is expected to be around 40% air saturation. It was shown that storage and subsequent degradation of poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) benefit the denitrification. In particular, PHB is stored in bacteria situated in deeper layers of the granules below where the autotrophic activity occurs, serves as a C-source for denitrification.  相似文献
