Culture experiments were carried out with Acropora sp. (a branching scleractinian coral) in seawater at two pCO2 conditions (438 and 725 µatm) and two temperatures (25 and 28 °C) in order to establish the pH and temperature dependence of the boron isotopic composition of the skeleton. A clear pCO2 effect, but no temperature effect, on the coral boron isotope composition is seen. For corals cultured at normal pCO2 (438 µatm), the 11B of the skeleton was 24.0±0.2 at 25 °C, and 23.9±0.3 at 28 °C. The values of 11B measured for corals cultured at higher pCO2 (725 µatm) were lower: 22.5±0.1, and 22.8±0.1 at 25 and 28 °C, respectively. The 11B of corals cultivated at both high and normal pCO2 conditions are consistent with a dominant pH control, and are very close to that calculated from theoretical considerations. Thus, the corals do not seem to significantly alter ambient seawater for calcification with respect to pH. Co-variation between boron and carbon isotope values is explored.Communicated by: Guest Editor A. Grottoli

The stable isotope ratios of nitrogen were measured in the mysid,Neomysis intermedia, together with various biogenic materials in a eutrophic lake, Lake Kasumigaura, in Japan throughout a year of 1984/85. The mysid, particulate organic matter (POM, mostly phytoplankton), and zooplankton showed a clear seasonal change in 15N with high values in spring and fall, but the surface bottom mud did not. A year to year variation as well as seasonal change in 15N was found in the mysid. The annual averages of 15N of each material collected in 1984/85 are as follows: surface bottom mud, 6.3 (range: 5.7–6.9); POM, 7.9 (5.8–11.8); large sized mysid, 11.6 (7.7–14.3); zooplankton, 12.5 (10.0–16.4); prawn, 13.2 (9.9–15.4); goby, 15.1 (13.8–16.7). The degree of15N enrichment by the mysid was determined as 3.2 by the laboratory rearing experiments. The apparent parallel relationship between the POM and the mysid in the temporal patterns of 15N with about 3 difference suggests the POM (mostly phytoplankton) as a possible food source ofN. intermedia in this lake through the year.

Stable carbon (13C) and nitrogen (15N) isotopes were used to elucidate primary food sources and trophic relationships of organisms in Khung Krabaen Bay and adjacent offshore waters. The three separate sampling sites were mangroves, inner bay and offshore. The 13C values of mangrove leaves were –28.2 to –29.4, seagrass –10.5, macroalgae –14.9 to –18.2, plankton –20.0 to –21.8, benthic detritus –15.1 to –26.3, invertebrates –16.5 to –26.0, and fishes –13.4 to –26.3. The 15N values of mangrove leaves were 4.3 to 5.7, seagrass 4.3, macroalgae 2.2 to 4.4, plankton 5.7 to 6.4 , benthic detritus 5.1 to 5.3, invertebrates 7.2 to 12.2 , and fishes 6.3 to 15.9. The primary producers had distinct 13C values. The 13C values of animals collected from mangroves were more negative than those of animals collected far from shore. The primary carbon sources that support food webs clearly depended on location. The contribution of mangroves to food webs was confined only to mangroves, but a mixture of macroalgae and plankton was a major carbon source for organisms in the inner bay area. Offshore organisms clearly derived their carbon through the planktonic food web. The 15N values of consumers were enriched by 3–4 relative to their diets. The 15N data suggests that some of aquatic animals had capacity to change their feeding habits according to places and availability of foods and as a result, individuals of the same species could be assigned to different trophic levels at different places.

This study investigates the effect of water depth on stable isotope composition and density-band formation in the skeletal material of the zooxanthellate coral Porites lutea. In February 1991, several colonies were stained with Alizarin red-S and then transferred from 6 to 40 m. Ten years later, in February 2001, one colony was retrieved and analyzed. This provided us with the unique opportunity to maintain the corals genetic integrity and hence to isolate environmental factors affecting skeletal isotopic composition and density patterns. Despite extreme environmental changes experienced by the corals, the downward transplants showed no mortality after 10 years. Acclimatization of the coral to the deep-water environment involved changes in mean annual extension rates and colony morphology. The growth rate at 6 m was 5.66±0.47 mm/year, almost twice the growth rate following transplantation to 40 m, which was 3.00±0.37 mm/year. A significant difference in mean annual 18O between the shallow and deep growth phases (–3.10±0.10 and –2.80±0.14, respectively) and amplitude (1.14±0.15 and 1.49±0.20, respectively) was detected. Mean annual 13C in the shallow growth phase was –1.58±0.12, significantly heavier than that of the deep growth phase which was –1.92±0.14. The phase relation between 18O and 13C was also depth dependent. These results suggest that the role of the kinetic effect in determining skeletal isotopic composition of deep-water hermatypic corals in the study site is greater than in that of shallow-water colonies. The timing of density-band formation was found to be depth independent. At both depths, low-density skeleton is produced during summer, and high-density skeleton is produced during winter, implying that it is intrinsically controlled rather than environmentally governed. The implications of these results on paleoclimate and sea level reconstruction are discussed.

Stable isotope ratio as a tracer of mangrove carbon in Malaysian ecosystems
Summary The ratio of stable carbon isotopes (13C) in plants and animals from Malaysian mangrove swamps, coastal inlets, and offshore waters was determined. Vascular plants of the swamps were isotopically distinct ( x±s.d.=-27.1±1.2) from plankton (-21.0±0.3) and other algae (-18.7±2.2). Animals from the swamps (-20.9±4.1) and inlets (-19.8±2.5) had a wide range of isotope ratios (-28.6 to-15.4), indicating consumption of both mangrove and algal carbon. Several commercially important species of bivalves, shrimp, crabs, and fish obtained carbon from mangrove trees. Mangrove carbon was carried offshore as detritus and was isotopically distinguishable in suspended particulate matter and sediments. Animals collected from 2 to 18 km offshore, however, showed no isotopic evidence of mangrove carbon assimilation, with ratios (-16.5±1.1, range-19.1 to-13.1) virtually identical to those reported for similar animals from other plankton-based ecosystems. Within groups of animals, isotope ratios reflected intergencric and interspecific differences in feeding and trophic position. In particular, there was a trend to less negative ratios with increasing trophic level.

Time-series 18O and 13C records from cohabiting massive coralPorites australiensis and giant clamTridacna gigas from the Great Barrier Reed of Australia, and from calcareous green algae in a core through modernHalimeda bioherm accreting in the eastern Java Sea, provide insights into the complex links between environmental factors and stable isotopes imprinted in these reef skeletal materials. The aragonitic coral and giant clam offer 20 years and 15 years of growth history, respectively. The giant clam yields mean 18O and 13C values of-0.5±0.5 and 2.2±0.2 (n=67), which agree well with the predicted equilibrium values. The coral yields mean 18O and 13C values of-5.6±0.5 and-1.8±0.7 (n=84), offering a striking example of kinetic and metabolic fractionation effects. Although both the coral and giant clam harbor symbionts and were exposed to a uniform ambient environment during their growth histories, their distinct isotopic compositions demonstrate dissimilar calcification pathways. The 18O records contain periodicities corresponding to the alternating annual density bands revealed by X-radiography and optical transmitted light. Attenuation of the 18O seasonal amplitudes occurring in the giant clam record 8 years after skeletal growth commenced is attributed to a changeover from fast to slow growth rates. Extreme seasonal 18O amplitudes of up to 2.2 discerned in both the coral and giant clam records exceed the equivalent seasonal temperature contrast in the reef environment, and are caused by the combined effect of rainfall and evaporation during the monsoon and dry seasons, respectively. Thus in addition of being useful temperature recorders, reef skeletal material of sufficient longevity, such asPorites andTridacna, may also indicate rainfall variations. Changing growth rates, determined from the annual growth bands, may exert a primary control on the coral 13C record which shows a remarkable negative shift of 1.7 over its growth history, by comparison with only 0.15 negative shift in the contemporaneous giant clam record. Use of coral 13C records as proxies of fossil fuel CO2 uptake by the ocean must be regarded with caution. The 18O and 13C records fromHalimeda are remarkably uniform over 1000 years of bioherm accretion history (18O=-1.7±0.2; 13C=3.9±0.1,n=28), in spite of variable Mg-calcite cements present in the utricles. Most of the cement infilling is probably syndepositional, and both theHalimeda aragonite and the Mg-calcite cements containign 12.3 mole % MgCO3 are deposited in isotopic equilibrium. Therefore, in favorable circumstances these algal skeletal remains may act as the shallow water analogs of benthic foraminifera in deep sea sediments in recording ambient sea water isotopic composition and temperature.

Summary Stable carbon isotope ratio analysis is a powerful technique in tracing ecosystem carbon flows, especially those between primary and secondary producers. The distinctive 13C/12C ratios of plant species tend to pass along the food chain with little further fractionation, hence the stable carbon isotope composition of an animal is an important clue to what it has eaten. We compared the stable carbon isotope composition of plants and insects in an old field in Georgia. Of the dominant plants in the old field, 6 were C4 species and had 13C1 values of-10.9 to 12.9, and 7 were C3 species with values of-27.3 to-29.1. Insects known to be feeding on only one plant species had 13C values within 1 of the isotopic composition of the plant. Wasp larvae parasitizing two insect species had 13C values 1.3 and 1.7 higher than that of the food plant. A variety of insects of unknown food habits collected on monospecific and mixed species plant stands in the old field had 13C values ranging from-10.1 to-30.0. Two species of leafhopper and a grasshopper had isotopic compositions within the range of C4 plant values; a tortoise beetle and a lace bug had isotopic compositions within C3 plant values. Other insects had intermediate 13C values, suggesting a mixed diet composed of both C3 and C4 plants. The carbon isotopic ratios of field collected insects appears to be a useful qualitative indicator of their feeding preference.

Summary Enchytraeus albidus was fed with Fucus, green algae, Zostera marina and Delesseria. Judging from absorption of food, rate of reproduction and duration of life, the animals preferred the plants in the sequence given above. As the putrefaction of a Fucus substrate advances, more and more enchytraeids leave it. A changing salinity of the substrate also influences the number of emigrating worms, increasing it from 15–45, but decreasing it towards 60. Fed with Fucus E. albidus tolerates a salinity of 60–70 on sand for more than 4 weeks, on filter paper only 50 for about one week.Reproduction is possible at salinities up to 40. Cocoon production is most frequent at 5. The mortality of young worms within the cocoons is lowest at 15. The incubation period is significantly shorter at salinities of 0–15 than at 30 and 40.As a terrestrial immigrant to the seashore Enchytraeus albidus secondarily enlarged its range of poikilosmosis, tolerating a concentration of 72 in its coelomic fluid for some time. At low salinities it maintains a remarkable degree of hyperosmosis.

The food-web structure of the Arctic deep Canada Basin was investigated in summer 2002 using carbon and nitrogen stable isotope tracers. Overall food-web length of the range of organisms sampled occupied four trophic levels, based on 3.8 trophic level enrichment (15N range: 5.3–17.7). It was, thus, 0.5–1 trophic levels longer than food webs in both Arctic shelf and temperate deep-sea systems. The food sources, pelagic particulate organic matter (POM) (13C=–25.8, 15N=5.3) and ice POM (13C=–26.9, 15N=4.1), were not significantly different. Organisms of all habitats, ice-associated, pelagic and benthic, covered a large range of 15N values. In general, ice-associated crustaceans (15N range 4.6–12.4, mean 6.9) and pelagic species (15N range 5.9–16.5, mean 11.5) were depleted relative to benthic invertebrates (15N range 4.6–17.7, mean 13.2). The predominantly herbivorous and predatory sympagic and pelagic species constitute a shorter food chain that is based on fresh material produced in the water column. Many benthic invertebrates were deposit feeders, relying on largely refractory material. However, sufficient fresh phytodetritus appeared to arrive at the seafloor to support some benthic suspension and surface deposit feeders on a low trophic level (e.g., crinoids, cumaceans). The enriched signatures of benthic deposit feeders and predators may be a consequence of low primary production in the high Arctic and the subsequent high degree of reworking of organic material.

Apostichopus (= Stichopus) japonicus blastulae and gastrulae were acclimated for 18 h to salinities of 32 (control), 24 and 22 (the lower limit of the range of tolerance), and 20 (below the range of tolerance). Acclimation to 20 resulted in the appearance of teratic larvae, most of which subsequently died. Acclimation to 24, 22, and 20 led to a shift in the range of tolerance of the larvae at further stages of development. With a decrease in salinity, acclimated larvae developed more successfully than unacclimated larvae. Acclimated larvae attained the pentactula stage and settled at a salinity range of 32–20; unacclimated larvae, at 32–22. At different stages of development, acclimated larvae survived greater decreases in salinity than unacclimated larvae. The acclimation effects could be traced up to metamorphosis and settling, i.e., two weeks after the end of the acclimation process.

We have determined the 18O and 13C values of azooxanthellate (Lophelia pertusa) and zooxanthellate (Porites lutea) corals at a micrometer scale using an ion microprobe (SIMS—secondary ion mass spectrometry). In P. lutea, centers of calcification are small (10 to 15 m) and difficult to locate during measurements. In L. pertusa, they are large (50 m) and arranged in lines of centers of calcification. Our results show that centers of calcification in L. pertusa have a restricted range of variation in 18O [-2.8±0.3 (PDB)], and a larger range in 13C [14.3 to 10.9 (PDB)]. Surrounding skeletal fibers exhibit large isotopic variation both for C and O (up to 12), and 13C and 18O are positively correlated. The C and O isotopic compositions of the center of calcification deviate from this linear trend at the lightest 18O values of the surrounding fibers. Ion microprobe results on P. lutea demonstrate also a large range of variation for the 18O values (up to 10). No correlation is found with C isotopes that exhibit, in comparison with L. pertusa, a small range of variation (2). This variation of 18O at a micrometer scale is probably the result of two processes: (1) an isotopic equilibrium calcification with 1 pH unit variation in the calcification fluid as indicated by direct measurements of coelenteron pH in the coral Galaxea fascicularis (Al-Horani et al. 2003) and (2) a kinetic fractionation. The 13C apparent disequilibrium in P. lutea may be the result of mixing between metabolic CO2 (respiration) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) coming directly from seawater.

On the influence of salinity on photosynthetic performance of various ecotypes ofDelesseria sanguinea andFucus serratus
The phaeophyceanF. serratus and the rhodophyceanD. sanguinea came from the North Sea (30 S) and the Baltic Sea (15 S). The activity of photosynthesis was taken as a criterion of algae vitality. Experiments were made in salinity concentrations of 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 40 and 50 S. Thirty-minute exposures to sub- or supranormal salinities stimulate photosynthesis. Within their physiological salinity ranges the algae assume normal photosynthetic rates within 24 hours. Extreme salinities cause a reduction in photosynthetic activity; this reduction mostly disappears, however, after re-transfer into normal salinity conditions. At 5 S all test individuals ofDelesseria from different locations exhibit a reduction of photosynthetic rates. At 50 SDelesseria from the North Sea still show increased activity, whileDelesseria from the Baltic are already severely damaged. The brackish-water formD. sanguinea (formalanceolata) is most sensitive to salinity variations. The photosynthetic activity ofF. serratus from Helgoland does not vary in all salinities employed. The range of test salinities corresponds to that of the habitat in the littoral zone, where high salinities occur during air exposure, and low salinities, during rainfall. By contrast, inF. serratus from the Baltic Sea occurring only in the sublittoral zone, photosynthetic rates are similarly affected by salinity as inDelesseria.

Samples of background air were collected in thelower troposphere of the Northern (high Arctic, northern Ontario, Vancouver and Houston) andSouthern (Baring Head, New Zealand) Hemispheresover the period July 1999 until March 2001.These samples were analysed for the stablecarbon isotope ratios of1,1,1-trichlorotrifluoroethane (CFC113) andCH3Cl using a gaschromatography-continuous flow on-linecombustion isotope ratio mass spectrometrycombination. For CH3Cl the global averageof the stable carbon isotope ratio is –36.2± 0.3 (error of mean). The average isbased on 78 data points, standard deviation forall measurements is 2.3, and the 90%confidence interval is –35.8 to –36.6.However, the number of data points from theSouthern Hemisphere is rather limited and thusthis observation is not necessarilyrepresentative for the entire SouthernHemisphere. A simple isotopic budget ofCH3Cl shows the most important parametersneeding to be defined are the kinetic isotopeeffect of CH3Cl destruction by OH radicalsand the source composition of CH3Clemitted by the oceans and biomass burning ofC-4 plants. Present budgets of atmosphericCH3Cl show a significant deficit in thesource strength. We estimate that the averagestable carbon isotope ratio of the additionalCH3Cl emissions required to balance thebudget is –41.9 ± 7.8. The averageCFC113 isotopic composition based on 38measurements is –23.3 ± 1.6 (error ofmean), = 9.6 with no significantdifference between the hemispheres.

Summary The mean stable-carbon isotope ratios (13C) for polar bear (Ursus maritimus) tissues (bone collagen –15.7, muscle –17.7, fat –24.7) were close to those of the same tissues from ringed seals (Phoca hispida) (–16.2, –18.1, and –26.1, respectively), which feed exclusively from the marine food chain. The 13C values for 4 species of fruits to which polar bears have access when on land in summer ranged from –27.8 to –26.2, typical of terrestrial plants in the Arctic. An animal's 13C signature reflects closely the 13C signature of it's food. Accordingly, the amount of food that polar bears consume from terrestrial food webs appears negligible, even though some bears spend 1/3 or more of each year on land during the seasons of greatest primary productivity.

The littoral benthos of 18 lakes in Alberta and Saskatchewan ranging in salinity from 3 to 126 (g1–1 TDS) were investigated twice, in the spring and in the summer of 1986. Multiple Ekman dredge samples were taken at water depths of about 0.5, 1.0 and 2 metres in each transect. Two to three transects were used in each lake according to its estimated limnological diversity for a total of 114 stations. A total of 76 species was present varying from 29–31 species in the three lakes of lowest salinity (means of 3.1–5.55) to only 2 species in lakes exceeding 100. Species richness decreased rapidly in salinities greater than 15.Biomass maximum mean of 10.91 g m–2 dry weight (maximum 63.0 g m–2) occurred in culturally eutrophic Humboldt Lake (3.1) but one third as great in other low salinity lakes. However, biomass again increased to about 4.5 gm–2 in two lakes of 15 As the salinity increased still further biomass declined steadily until a minimum of 0.0212 g m–2 was recorded in most saline Aroma Lake (mean 119). Summer biomass (11 lakes) was greater than spring biomass (4 lakes) because some groups such as amphipods, corixids and ostracods became more abundant in summer. Wet weight biomass averaged 15.8 of dry weight biomass.Seasonality (spring or summer), sediment texture and organic matter content, water depth, pH, salinity (TDS) and the presence of aquatic plants ( plant cover) were considered in the matrix involving species dry weight biomass at each of 117 stations. TWINSPAN classification of the samples yielded a dendrogram with 18 indicator species. Successive dichotomies divided these indicator species into four main lake groups based on salinity, i.e., Group I: 3–10 (Gammarus, Glyptotendipes I, Chironomus cf. plumosus), Group II: 10–38%. (Hyalella, Enallagma,Bezzia), Group III: 38–63 (Hygrotus salinarius, Cricotopus ornatus), Group IV: >63 (Dolichopodidae, Ephydra hians). Each of these main groups was subdivided into smaller groups of lakes based on factors such as pH, seasonality (spring or summer species dominance), organic matter and plant cover. Depth of samples played no apparent role.

A method is described whereby arrays of samples ofClupea pallasi eggs may be stored during their preparation. The high fertilization potential retained by the eggs during short-term storage allows them to be fertilized synchronously when sample preparation is complete. A variation of the dry method of storage retained maximum fertilization potential (80–85%) of the eggs for about 1 hr, and of milt dilution (18 with 17 S sea water), about 7 hr. Following dry storage, eggs fertilized in salinities of 0–45 showed maximum rates of fertilization in salinities of 10–20, and fertilization rates 50% in salinities of 4.5–42. Salinities of fertilization influenced egg diameter, median hatching time, and larval length at hatching in egg samples transferred 21/2 hr after fertilization to an incubation salinity of 17 at 7°C. Fertilization rates were higher (90–95%) for eggs stored in 17 S at 7°C prior to fertilization. Under such wet storage conditions, maximum fertilization pontential was retained for about 2 hr. Highest fertilization rates (95–96%) were obtained for eggs stored and fertilized in salinities of 12–15. For the species and the area of origin considered (British Columbia), wet storage of eggs should result in maximum fertilization when the eggs are stored at 4°C for a period not greater than 2 hr prior to fertilization in the 12–15 S storage medium.Prepared under the auspices of the Canadian-German Scientific and Technical Cooperation Agreement.

Carbon and nitrogen stable isotopic data from the primary producers in mangrove ecosystems are needed to investigate trophic links and biogeochemical cycling. Compared with other mangrove species (e.g. Rhizophora mangle) very few measurements have been conducted on the white mangrove, Laguncularia racemosa. The carbon and nitrogen stable isotopic and elemental compositions of L. racemosa were analyzed and compared from Florida and Belize. 13C values of L. racemosa from Florida (mean = –26.4) were slightly higher than those from Twin Cays, Belize (mean = -27.4), which may be due to higher salinity in some parts of the Florida site. There was no difference between the 15N values from L. racemosa from these two sites (Florida mean = 0.6; Belize mean = 0.3), which are indicative of nitrogen derived from nitrogen fixation in a planktonic marine system. However, higher 15N values from L. racemosa at Man of War Cay in Belize (11.4 and 12.3), which is fertilized by roosting marine birds (14.0), illustrate that L. racemosa can sensitively reflect alternative nitrogen sources. Although the isotopic data could not distinguish between Avicennia germinans, R. mangle and L. racemosa in Belize the L. racemosa had considerably higher C/N ratios (46.5 – 116.1) compared with the Florida samples (42.2 – 76.0) or the other mangrove species. Unlike some previous findings from R. mangle, substrate characteristics (e.g. salinity, NH4 +, and H2S) were not related to the isotopic or elemental composition of L. racemosa. 13C, 15N and C/N were analyzed for ecosystem components from L. racemosa habitats at Twin Cays, including other plants (e.g. R. mangle, A. germinans and seagrass), detritus, microbial mats and sediments. Results from mass-balance calculations show that mangrove detritus composes very little of the sediment, which is principally composed of microbial biomass (80 – 90%). Detritus at some sites is also influenced by sources other than that from L. racemosa, including seagrass leaves.

In the Baltic Sea area, the cladoceran Daphnia magna is commonly found in brackish water rockpools and it has been suggested that salinity is one of the niche dimensions that affects the distribution of the species. The salinity tolerance of D. magna was studied both in physiological and life history experiments. The experimental salinities were freshwater, 4S and 8S. The highest respiration and ammonium excretion rates were measured in the freshwater treatment with decreasing respiration and ammonium excretion rates at higher salinities. The lowest O/N ratio (oxygen consumption to ammonium excretion), describing the metabolic status of an organism, was obtained at 8S, although the only significant differences were detected when comparing to 4S treatments. Individual growth rate, reproductive output and population growth rate were highest at 4S. At 8S growth and reproduction were reduced as compared to freshwater and 4S. The life history parameters in the performed experiments indicated higher fitness (expressed as r) as well as more favourable conditions for growth and reproduction at 4S, whereas the O/N ratio was more difficult to interpret and, in this case, gave a less clear picture of the salinity influence.

The isotopic composition of sulfur in sulfate from precipitation, stream inflows and outflow of the Lake 239 watershed at the Experimental Lakes Area, northwestern Ontario, was monitored for four years, 1982–1985. Rainfall had 34S of 3–9and a three year mean value weighted by the mass of sulfate of 4.8 Sulfur in streams ranged from 5–15 and displayed a pronounced seasonal pattern in which 34S showed significant negative correlations with both streamflows and sulfate concentrations. Outflow values were much more constant and averaged 6.4 over the three year period. Sulfate reduction or sorption favoring retention of the lighter isotope in the watershed was the probable cause of the isotopic variation of the sulfur isotopes in the streams.
