A discrete deterministic model is described for the growth of an age-structured population of yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, incorporating recent information on the asymmetry of cell division and control of the cell cycle in this species. Solutions are obtained for the age structure of the population at equilibrium, and for the equilibrium distribution of relative frequency of cells through the cell cycle. The model is applied to experimental data on the changing age structure of nonequilibrium populations of yeast. The model predicts well both the transient behavior and the equilibrium structure of such populations. It is shown that the asymmetry of cell division explains (1) the excess of newly formed daughter cells in the population as compared to the frequency of older cells and (2) the damped oscillations in the frequencies of cells of different ages as demographic equilibrium is approached. 相似文献

The sensitivity to harvesting in a discrete-time, age-structured model of an animal population is considered. Density dependence and stochasticity are confined to the first year of the life cycle. Sensitivity is characterized by (a) the characteristic return time and (b) the relative variance (coefficient of variation) of recruitment and yield. Harvesting affects the return time and relative variance through two mechanisms: (1) a displacement of the equilibrium down the stock-recruitment curve and (2) a change in the shape of the “fecundity profile.” The first mechanism occurs in models without age structure and usually has the effect of increasing both return time and relative variance. The second mechanism has opposite effects on return time and relative variance—reducing the former while in most cases increasing the latter. For this model it can be concluded that the overall effect of harvesting is to increase the relative variance of recruitment and yield. The behavior of the return time is ambiguous and is in poor agreement with that of the relative variance. 相似文献

对太白山不同生境条件下的独叶草种群年龄结构、生命表及存活曲线进行了研究,结果表明,不同生境的独叶草种群在3~6年生阶段个体数量最多。幼年个体和老年个体数量较少,生命表中。幼龄级的dx、qx、Kx等为负数,可以反映种群幼龄个体缺乏程度.以无性繁殖独叶草不同与以有性生殖为主的植物,它可产生不同龄级的无性系分株,幼龄个体少的年龄结构并不代表种群必然衰退.随海拔升高,种群密度增加,个体寿命延长,反映了种群在适应性方面的调整.独叶草种群根状茎生存于腐殖质层中,仅有叶片露出地面;种群所在的牛皮桦、巴山冷杉和太白红杉群落人为干扰较少。生境相对稳定,种群可以长期维持.对种群保护应注重所处的环境及森林群落保护。 相似文献

Using a mathematical model of the number dynamics in a population with age and sex structure, the relationships were studied between the number of newborns and that of mature females and males. In addition, we studied transitions between different modes of population dynamics which were dependent on changes in not only the population parameters, such as reproduction intensity, survival, and self-regulation, but also in mating pair formation. Population dynamics was found to manifest multistability; i.e., the alternative dynamics modes were observed at the same values of the population parameters but under different initial conditions. 相似文献

The Painted Bunting Passerina ciris is a Neotropical songbird which breeds primarily in the USA during the summer and migrates to Mexico, Central America, southern Florida and the Caribbean over the winter. Male Painted Buntings are brightly coloured, which makes them highly sought after as pets, particularly in Mexico, Central America and Europe. We used short sequence repeats (microsatellite DNA) to investigate the population genetic structure of the Painted Bunting and its implications in conservation management of migratory populations. We found a detectable level of population differentiation as revealed by pairwise FST and RST comparisons and Bayesian clustering analyses, with strong support for differentiation between eastern and western Painted Buntings (e.g. Oklahoma and Georgia FST = 0.1; P = 0.005; RST = 0.18; P = 0.04) in accordance with previous mitochondrial DNA analysis. We recovered additional support for two sub‐groups within the western clade. While linking migrant songbirds captured outside of the USA to their breeding populations remains a challenge, we show that natural levels of population genetic differentiation can be detected via microsatellite DNA markers and exploited in migratory connectivity studies. We also demonstrate the potential utility of our low‐cost markers for population identification of birds recovered from the pet trade by screening a small subset of samples (n = 5) collected as part of wildlife tracking. We discuss the implications of our results for future efforts to understand patterns of population decline in Painted Buntings more generally, as well as how we might expand this methodology to combat illegal pet‐trade activity in this and other songbird species. 相似文献

Summary Germination synchrony may facilitate damping-off epidemics by creating a high density of uniformly susceptible individuals. We tested the hypothesis that synchronous germination causes increased seed and seedling mortality from damping-off in two legume species attacked by the fungal pathogen, Pythium aphanidermatum. Glycine max exhibited rapid, synchronous germination compared to its progenitor, G. soja, and suffered greater mortality from both pre-and postemergent damping-off in controlled environment experiments. However, when mixed-aged populations of G. max were created experimentally by staggering planting times, a significant increase in damping-off mortality occurred. In G. soja, which typically has mixed-aged populations due to asynchronous germination, experimental populations with an even-aged distribution also suffered increased damping-off mortality. Hence, the relationship between population age structure and damping-off mortality was species-specific. We propose that species differences in the duration of individual seedling susceptibility to disbase interact with population age structure to control the cutcome of damping-off epidemics. 相似文献

1. Studies of the spatio-temporal dynamics and structure of populations have identified many categories of population type. However, recognized categories intergrade, making it difficult to assign empirical population systems to single categories.
2. We suggest that most population categories can be arranged along two axes that combine per capita birth (B), death (D), emigration (E) and immigration (I) rates. The 'Compensation Axis' describes the source-sink component of population structure, with source populations exporting individuals (B > D, E > I) and sinks and pseudosinks consuming individuals (B < D, E < I). The 'Mobility Axis' describes the involvement of a local population in regional (I + E) rather than local (B + D) processes, running from separate populations, through metapopulations, to patchy populations.
3. Each sample area within a spatially structured population system can potentially be assigned to a position along each of these axes, with individual sample areas weighted by local population size. The positions of these sample areas and their relative weightings allow the relative importance of different types of process to be judged. A worked exampled is provided, using the butterfly Hesperia comma . This approach shifts the emphasis from pattern (categories that real population systems do not fit) onto process.
4. In many systems, continuous variation in habitat quality and demographic parameters make clear distinctions between 'habitat' and 'non-habitat' difficult to sustain. Forest musk deer (Moschus berezovskii) are rare as a result of poaching for musk and habitat loss. Some captive populations of forest musk deer have been established for decades in China. However, little genetic information is available for conservation management. In this paper, genetic variations, population structures, and the genetic bottleneck hypothesis were examined using 11 microsatellite loci from captive populations in Miyalo, Jinfeng and Maerkang in Sichuan Province, China. Estimates of genetic variability revealed substantial genetic variation in the three populations. A total of 142 different alleles were observed in 121 forest musk deer and the effective number of alleles per locus varied from 6.76 to 12.95. The average values of observed heterozygosity, expected heterozygosity, and Nei's expected heterozygosity were 0.552, 0.899 and 0.894 respectively. The overall significant (P < 0.001) deficit of heterozygotes because of inbreeding within breeds amounted to 34.5%. The mean FST (P < 0.001) showed that approximately 90.2% of the genetic variation was within populations and 9.8% was across populations. The UPGMA diagram, based on Nei's unbiased genetic distance, indicated that the three populations were differentiated into two different groups and it agreed with their origin and history. Bottleneck tests indicated that all three populations have undergone a population bottleneck, suggesting a small effective population size. Acknowledging that the genetic structure of populations has crucial conservation implications, the present genetic information should be taken into account in management plans for the conservation of captive forest musk deer. 相似文献

We investigated 25 natural populations of Chamaecyparis obtusa using 51 cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence (CAPS) markers, which were developed using information on sequence-tagged sites (STS) in Cryptomeria japonica. Most CAPS markers have codominant expression patterns, and are suitable for population studies because of their robustness and convenience. We estimated various genetic diversity parameters, including average heterozygosity (H(e)) and allelic richness and found that the more peripheral populations tended to have lower genetic diversity than central populations, in agreement with a previous theoretical study. The overall genetic differentiation between populations was low, but statistically significant (G(ST)=0.039), and similar to the level reported in a previous allozyme study. We attempted to detect non-neutral loci associated with local adaptation to clarify the relationship between the fixation index (F(ST)) and H(e) values for each locus and found seven candidates non-neutral loci. Phylogenetic tree analysis of the populations and Bayesian clustering analysis revealed a pattern of gradually increasing isolation of populations with increasing geographical distance. Three populations had a high degree of linkage disequilibrium, which we attribute to severe bottlenecks due to human disturbance or competition with other species during their migration from refugia after the most recent glaciation. We concluded that the small populations in western Japan and in Kanto district are more important, from a conservation perspective, than the populations in central Japan, due to their genetic divergence, relatively small sizes and restricted areas. 相似文献

The aim of this work was to compare the impact of inoculation density on the rate of cellulose hydrolysis by a rumen derived culture with that of a microbial enrichment from an organic waste anaerobic digester. The results showed a linear relationship between the mass of biomass at the start of the first order degradation phase (Xo) and the first order hydrolysis rate (r) for both rumen inoculated and leachate inoculated cellulose digestions and that the slopes of these relationships were not distinguishable. This suggested that differences in the microbial community, media and other environmental factors had a lesser impact on the hydrolysis rate compared to the effect of the number of cells in the system. This could be of great importance to industrial applications of anaerobic digestion technologies as it suggested that if cells densities in the waste treatment digesters could be boosted to match those seen in the rumen, then the rates of the cellulose hydrolysis would rise. 相似文献

The pattern and scale of the genetic structure of populations provides valuable information for the understanding of the spatial ecology of populations, including the spatial aspects of density fluctuations. In the present paper, the genetic structure of periodically fluctuating lemmings (Dicrostonyx groenlandicus) in the Canadian Arctic was analysed using mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region sequences and four nuclear microsatellite loci. Low genetic variability was found in mtDNA, while microsatellite loci were highly variable in all localities, including localities on isolated small islands. For both genetic markers the genetic differentiation was clear among geographical regions but weaker among localities within regions. Such a pattern implies gene flow within regions. Based on theoretical calculations and population census data from a snap-trapping survey, we argue that the observed genetic variability on small islands and the low level of differentiation among these islands cannot be explained without invoking long distance dispersal of lemmings over the sea ice. Such dispersal is unlikely to occur only during population density peaks. 相似文献

Many wild and managed bee pollinators have experienced population declines over the past several decades, and molecular and population genetic tools have been valuable in understanding conservation threats across the bee tree of life. Emerging genomic tools have the potential to improve classical applications of conservation genetics, such as assessing species status, and quantifying genetic diversity, gene flow and effective population sizes. Genomic tools can also revolutionize novel research in bee conservation and management, including the identification of loci underlying adaptive and economically desirable traits, such as those involved in disease susceptibility, responses to multiple environmental stressors, and even discovering and understanding the hidden diversity of beneficial microorganisms associated with bees. In this perspective, we provide a survey of some of the ways genomic tools can be applied to bee conservation to bridge the gap between basic and applied genomics research. 相似文献
