1. Growth and emergence of the acidification tolerant stonefly Leuctra nigra were studied in four coniferous forest streams with contrasting pH. Invertebrate samples were taken bimonthly during May 1997 to April 1998. Emerging L. nigra were captured in two of the streams during April to July 1998 using pyramidal emergence traps. In addition, a laboratory experiment was conducted to evaluate growth of L. nigra in response to variations in food quality (neutral or acid conditioned leaves) and water pH. 2. The invertebrate community in low pH streams had lower diversity and density compared with neutral streams. Abundance of L. nigra was also lower, despite the dominance of this stonefly in the invertebrate community in the acidic streams. 3. Secondary production of L. nigra was 2.04 and 3.07 g DW m–2 year–1 in the neutral streams compared with 1.02 and 1.27 g DW m–2 year–1 in the acidic streams. The P/B ratio differed only slightly among streams. 4. More adult L. nigra emerged in the neutral stream compared with the acidic stream, despite the density of the pre‐emerging fifth instar nymphs of L. nigra being similar in the two streams. Adult size (expressed as wing length) and female fitness were also significantly greater in the neutral stream. 5. Laboratory growth of L. nigra nymphs was significantly lower when fed acid conditioned alder leaves rather than neutral conditioned leaves. There was no difference in growth when nymphs were fed neutral conditioned leaves in acid and neutral water. 6. Our study shows multiple, sub‐lethal effects on life history of the acidification tolerant stonefly L. nigra in coniferous streams with low pH. The results suggest that these effects could be mediated primarily by low food quality. These findings add to the existing evidence that coniferous plantation forestry has a negative impact on stream ecosystems.  相似文献

Collections of adults ofParakiefferiella nigra Brundin indicate that this chironomid occurs widely in arctic and subarctic zones. In addition, it has occasionally been collected in cool temperate and boreal forest lakes of both North America and Europe. Although widely distributed, the larva and its habitat have not previously been described. Identity of the larva ofP. nigra has been established by studying associated reared specimens. The distinctive larva, with reduced second lateral mental teeth, is stenotopic, and on the basis of modern collections appears to be most abundant in cold, oligotrophic lakes. More data is required to establish the range of thermal environments inhabited by the larva. Larval head capsule remains ofP. nigra are common in late-glacial sediments of southwestern British Columbia lakes and provide important evidence for oligotrophic conditions during late-glacial time.  相似文献

Populus nigra is considered a rare and threatened tree species in Switzerland because of dramatic habitat loss owing to river regulations during the last two centuries and because of potential gene introgression from non-indigenous P. deltoides through planted P. x canadensis hybrids. The significance of introgression as an endangerment to P. nigra, however, is controversial. The aims of the present study were (1) to assess how abundant P. nigra trees are in Switzerland and (2) to assess potential gene introgression. We present data from a molecular survey of 1372 putative P. nigra trees from Switzerland, using both chloroplast DNA and nuclear DNA markers. The results show that P. nigra is more abundant in Switzerland than hitherto thought. Furthermore, we detected a low frequency of gene introgression.  相似文献

Summary Interspecific pollen competition among Populus deltoides, P. nigra and P. maximowiczii in fertilizing P. deltoides ovules was studied by using a pollen mixture technique, allozymes and leaf morphology. The frequencies of F1 seedlings of different paternities in pollen-mix crosses showed highly significant (P<0.01) departures from the 11 ratio expected if pollen selection was random. P. deltoides pollen was the most competitive. The mean percentages of F1 seedlings of P. deltoides paternity in crosses with pollen mixes P. deltodes + P. nigra, P. deltoides + P. maximowiczii, and P. deltoides + P. nigra + P. maximowiczii were 95.0, 92.5, and 84.8, respectively. P. maximowiczii pollen was more competitive than P. nigra pollen, which was at a selective disadvantage. An average of 83.6% of F1 progenies of the eight crosses with P. nigra + P. maximowiczii pollen showed P. maximowiczii paternity. Also, in four crosses with P. deltoides + P. nigra + P. maximowiczii pollen, the relative proportion of P. deltoides × P. maximowiczii seedlings (13.4%) was higher than that of P. deltoides × P. nigra seedlings (1.8%). Pollen proportions in the pollen mixes and pollen size did not significantly affect the competitive ability of the pollen. The relative pollen competitive ability indicated reproductive affinities among the species.  相似文献

Herbivores can affect future forest composition by feeding selectivity. At temperature-sensitive treelines, herbivory can exacerbate or constrain climate-driven distributional shifts in tree species. This study analyses the impact of herbivory in a Mediterranean treeline of widespread Pinus sylvestris and P. nigra pinewoods, testing whether herbivory damage reinforces or inhibits the climatic responses of these trees. We used naturally occurring sapling pairs of similar size and age of both species, thereby isolating plant characteristics from environmental effects in herbivore behaviour. Herbivory damage by ungulates proved higher than that caused by insects in saplings of both species. Low plant density and extreme abiotic conditions at the treeline could in part be responsible for the observed low incidence of insect herbivory. Ungulates preferred P. sylvestris over P. nigra, implying heavier browsing damage for a large number of P. sylvestris saplings, suffering reduced internode growth as a consequence. In addition, P. sylvestris could not compensate height-growth reductions due to browsing with higher growth rate than P. nigra. In fact, P. sylvestris showed similar or lower relative height growth with respect to P. nigra. Under a scenario of increasing aridity and maintenance of ungulate populations, the upward migration of P. sylvestris in its southern range could be restricted by higher drought vulnerability than P. nigra, a situation exacerbated by ungulate herbivory. Our results indicate that ungulate herbivory reinforces climatic response of coexisting P. sylvestris and P. nigra at treeline, favouring a potential change in community dominance towards Mediterranean P. nigra.  相似文献

Some species of predatory aquatic bugs (Nepoidea, including Belostomatidae and Nepidae) are designated as threatened-vulnerable species in the Red Data Book of Japan and are regarded as effective predators of freshwater snails and mosquito larvae. To reveal the feeding habits of Nepoidea, we investigated their dietary items in wetlands and obtained data from the published literature. Lethocerus deyrolli (Vuillefroy) preys mainly upon frogs, and the major diet of the nymphs is tadpoles. Laccotrephes japonensis (Scott) adults prey mainly upon tadpoles. Lethocerus deyrolli nymphs and L. japonensis adults compete against each other as same-guild members because they are sympatric in wetlands. Both nymphs and adults of Appasus japonicus (Vuillefroy) feed on snails, and L. japonensis nymphs feed on aquatic insects, including mosquito larvae (39.3% of aquatic insects). These species are effective predators of medically important pests such as snails, and mosquito larvae.  相似文献

Growth, photosynthesis, and Na+, K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ distributions were examined in two-year-old hydroponically cultured Populus nigra and Populus alba cuttings exposed to salt stress (0, 50, or 100 mM NaCl) for four or six weeks and to nonaeration stress for one or three weeks, followed by a three-week aeration period in 2/5 Hoagland solution. Salt stress with 100 mM NaCl totally inhibited height increase in P. nigra cuttings. Combined salinity and nonaeration inhibited height increase to a greater degree than either stress alone in both species. Simple salt stress did not affect diameter increase in P. alba, whereas combined high salinity (100 mM NaCl) and nonaeration inhibited diameter increase. Growth and biomass accumulation were more sensitive to salt stress in P. nigra cuttings than in P. alba, although P. alba showed a more rapid decrease in photosynthesis in response to nonaeration stress. Ion distributions in the leaves and roots differed between species. P. alba was superior to P. nigra in terms of Na+ exclusion capacity, such that most of the absorbed Na+ was confined to the root system, with little reaching the leaves. The distributions of K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ in the leaves and roots of each species under the two stressors were also analyzed. The lower Na+/K+ ratio in leaves indicated that P. alba was more tolerant to salt stress than P. nigra.  相似文献

Restriction fragment analysis was conducted to determine interspecific chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) variation and genetic relationships among Populus deltoides, P. nigra, P. x canadensis (P. deltoides x P. nigra), and P. maximowiczii. Total cellular DNAs of these poplars were digested with 16 restriction endonucleases, and Southern blots of the restriction digests were probed with six different cloned cpDNA fragments from Petunia. P. deltoides, P. nigra, and P. maximowiczii each had a distinct chloroplast genome, separated by many restriction-site and restriction-fragment-length mutations, predominantly in the large single-copy region of the genome. P. x canadensis shared the same cpDNA restriction fragment patterns as P. deltoides var. deltoides. P. nigra was most diverged from P. deltoides, and P. deltoides showed close cpDNA relationships to P. maximowiczii. Nucleotide substitutions per site in cpDNA were 0.0036 between P. deltoides and P. maximowiczii, 0.0071 between P. nigra and P. maximowiczii, and 0.0077 between P. deltoides and P. nigra. We suggest that P. nigra should be classified in a new separate section, the Nigrae.  相似文献

Summary The possible effect of predation on the habitat selection of nymphs of the two mayfly species Parameletus chelifer Bengtsson and P. minor (Bengtsson) was investigated for different habitats of a North Swedish boreal river. In spring, these two species migrate to river margins and subsequently, in different proportions, to adjacent seasonal ponds. Feeding rates on mayfly nymphs and mosquito larvae by some dytiscid beetles and larvae, a corixid waterbug and a caddisfly larva were studied in the laboratory. In the seasonal pond, the consumption rate of invertebrate predators on Parameletus nymphs was below that expected from their relative abundance, and mosquito larvae were preferred. At the river margin, where mosquito larvae were absent, Parameletus nymphs were consumed in agreement with their relative abundance. The absolute abundance of macroinvertebrate predators was similar at the river margin and in the pond. Fish predators visited the seasonal pond only during a short time of flood, while at the river margin their presence was continuous. In the seasonal pond, minnow and roach consumed nymphs of both P. chelifer and P. minor in a lower proportion than expected. At the river margin, nymphs of P. chelifer were consumed by minnow and ten-spined stickleback in a higher proportion than expected. Nymphs of P. minor were consumed according to expectance. Imagines of P. minor emerged early, and nymphs were equally abundant in the river and in the seasonal pond. In contrast, almost all nymphs of P. chelifer migrated to the seasonal pond. The later emergence of P. chelifer would probably result in a very high mortality from predation if it remained at the river margin.  相似文献

Summary In order to understand the nature of interspecific barriers in Populus, we have explored pollen/pistil interactions in intra- and interspecific crosses Populus nigra x P. nigra and P. nigra x P. alba. The kinetics of pollen-tube growth demonstrated that P. nigra and P. alba pollen tubes have distinct behavioral patterns inside P. nigra pistils. P. alba pollen tubes exhibit an unique S-shaped growth curve and an arrested growth site near the sylodium. P. nigra pollen tubes exhibit two growth phases, in the stigmatic tissues and in the ovarian cavity respectively. P. nigra and P. alba curves diverge 5 h after controlled pollination and could be related to a change in the physiology of the P. nigra pollen tube, which shifts from an autotrophic to a heterotrophic type of nutrition. Protein analysis of pollinated stigmatic extracts (0,6 and 20 h after pollination) revealed qualitative and quantitative differences that are related to the presence of either P. nigra or P. alba pollen tubes inside the stigmatic tissues. Increasing numbers of protein bands were detectable from 0 to 20 h after pollination only in intraspecific cross. Glycoproteins were detected, and the differences observed were dependent of the cross. -Galactosidase activity was found in pollinated stigmas, but an increase in its activity (one isozyme of pHi 4.2) between 6 h and 20 h after pollination was detected only in the intraspecific cross. This enzyme could play a role in heterotrophic pollen-tube nitrition, and its activity could be the final result of a series of interactions started by the initial pollen-stigma dialog.  相似文献

Recently, the number of collection records of Pemphigus galls from Populus nigra has been increasing in Japan. To identify the galls on P. nigra, mitochondrial COI sequences were analyzed from galling aphid samples collected on P. nigra in Tokyo and Hokkaido. From the BLAST search and neighbor‐joining (NJ) analysis, the aphid samples were identified as Pemphigus bursarius, which has not been recorded from Japan. Two samples from Tokyo and Hokkaido showed a genetic difference of 0.30%. This result suggests that different strains of P. bursarius might have been introduced into the Japanese islands at least twice.  相似文献

We investigated the potential links between stomatal control of transpiration and the risk of embolism in root and shoot xylem of seedlings of three Mediterranean conifers (Cupressus sempervirens, Pinus halepensis and P. nigra) grown in a greenhouse under semi-controlled conditions. We measured the intrinsic vulnerability to embolism in roots and current year shoots by the air injection method. Root and shoot segments were subjected to increasing pressures, and the induced loss of hydraulic conductivity recorded. The three species displayed very different vulnerabilities in shoots, with P. nigra being much more vulnerable than P. halepensis and C. sempervirens. Roots were distinctly more vulnerable than shoots in C. sempervirens and P. halepensis (50% loss of conductivity induced at 3.0 MPa and 1.7 MPa higher xylem water potential in roots vs shoots). In P. nigra, no significant difference of vulnerability between shoots and roots was found. Seedlings were subjected to soil drought, and stomatal conductance, twig hydraulic conductivity and needle water potential were measured. The water potential resulting in almost complete stomatal closure (90%) was very close to the threshold water potential inducing loss of conductivity (10%) in twigs in P nigra, resulting in a very narrow safety margin between stomatal closure and embolism induction. The safety margin was larger in P. halepensis and greatest in C. sempervirens. Unexpectedly, this water potential threshold produced a 30–50% loss of conductivity in 3–5 mm diameter roots, depending on the species. The implications of this finding are discussed.  相似文献

To determine whether two species of Phaseolus beans differ in their suitability for reproduction of the leafhopper Empoasca kraemeri, resistant and susceptible genotypes of the two species were exposed to egg laying leafhoppers and the resultant numbers of nymphs on each were compared. Resistant genotypes of P. acutifolius bore fewer nymphs than any genotype of P. vulgaris. Even susceptible P. acutifolius genotypes bore no more nymphs/leaf than resistant P. vulgaris genotypes though they did bear more nymphs/cm2 of leaf area. These results indicate that P. acutifolius may be a useful donor of oviposition non-preference, increased egg mortality, or possibly nymphal non-preference, and confirm that counts of nymphs provide a useful screening technique in the selection of parental genotypes for an improvement programme.  相似文献

Transport and retention of the insect growth regulators (IGRs) diflubenzuron and pyriproxyfen in larvae of the beet armywormSpodoptera exigua (Hübner) and in nymphs of the predatory bugPodisus maculiventris (Say) were investigated. In a first experiment, the retention of orally administered [14C]radiolabeled isotopes of both compounds in fifth-instar larvae of the beet armyworm was studied. Rate of excretion of both IGRs inS. exigua caterpillars was high, with a 50% excretion time of approximately 6 h after intake. In a second experiment, the transport of the compounds from prey to predator and their retention inside the predator were studied. Fifthinstar nymphs ofP. maculiventris were allowed to feed on caterpillars that had been given contaminated food. For both diflubenzuron and pyriproxyfen, more than 80% of the amount of radiolabel applied was recovered in consumed prey. Low levels of radioactivity (c. 3% of the applied amount of radiolabel) were also found in the fluid regurgitated by the prey larvae when attacked by the predatory bugs. Relatively small amounts of radiolabel (c. 8 and 15% of the amount orally applied to the prey for diflubenzuron and pyriproxyfen, respectively) were ingested byP. maculiventris nymphs when feeding on beet armyworm caterpillars. The data suggest that the predators did not use gut content as food. The pattern of excretion in nymphs ofP. maculiventris differed between compounds. For diflubenzuron, there was a drastic decrease of radioactivity inside the predator body of around 40% within the first 6 h and then the level of retained radiolabel remained stable at 3–4% up to 72 h. For pyriproxyfen, a slow decrease of radioactivity inside the body was observed and at 72 h only 2% of the applied quantity was detected. Results of this study are discussed in relation to the findings from previous studies on the toxicity of both IGRs toP. maculiventris.  相似文献

Differences in color patterns have been the most used feature in describing cichlid species belonging to genus Petrotilapia from Lake Malawi. In this study, we quantified morphological variation in body shape within and among three coexisting Petrotilapia species using landmark-based geometric morphometric methods. Statistic analyses revealed significant body shape differences among species but not between sexes. Post hoc multiple comparisons based on Mahalanobis distances revealed that P. nigra was significantly different from P. genalutea and Petrotilapia sp., whereas the latter two were not significantly different. The splines generated showed that the most pronounced variation was in the head region, in which P. nigra had a relatively longer and deeper head than the other two. The most clear-cut distinction was in gape length; P. genalutea had the longest gape, followed by Petrotilapia sp., whereas P. nigra had the shortest gape. Body depth was shallower in P. nigra than the others. When comparing sexes by their centroid size, ANOVA revealed that males were bigger than females. Therefore, we conclude that color is not the only feature that can distinguish these congeners. We discuss the observed sexual dimorphism in terms of sexual selection and relate morphological variation among species to feeding behavior, which may help explain their coexistence in nature.  相似文献

Oviposition behaviour and host size selection of the solitary parasitoid Leptomastix epona(Walker) and the gregarious Pseudaphycus flavidulus(Brèthes) [both Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae] were examined on five size classes of the mealybug Pseudococcus viburni(Signoret) [Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae]. The host size classes mostly consisted of one stage (first, second, third instar nymph, young adult and preovipositing adult) and were presented together to wasps of either parasitoid species. Both parasitoid species locate the host by drumming the surface of the patch with the antennae. Leptomastix eponaseems to use mainly the antennae to examine the host but P. flavidulusmay accept or reject a host for oviposition after antennation or insertion of the ovipositor. Leptomastix eponaattempts oviposition in all the host stages from second instar nymphs but P. flavidulusincludes first instar. Both parasitoid species select mainly larger hosts (>1 mm, third instar nymphs) to oviposit but P. flavidulusis able to parasitize more second instar nymphs compared to L. epona. Female wasps of L. eponamay host feed on small mealybugs (second and third instar nymphs) that they do not use for oviposition. Oviposition experience of either parasitoid species for 24 hours does not influence host size selection on patches with hosts of similar mixed sizes. Oviposition decisions are independent of the host sizes of the preceding ovipositions. Implications about stability of a single parasitoid – host system and the success of biological control of the mealybug were discussed in respect of the developmental refugia of the two parasitoid species. Niche overlap of the two parasitoid species was discussed with a view to giving an insight into a single or multiple introduction.  相似文献

We examined intraspecific chloroplast (cp) DNA variation within Populus deltoides, P. nigra, and P. maximowiczii by restriction fragment analysis using 16 restriction endonucleases and six heterologous probes of cloned Petunia cpDNA fragments. All three Populus species showed intraspecific cpDNA variation, which was intra- and inter-varietal in P. deltoides, intervarietal in P. nigra, and origin-specific in P. maximowiczii. Two varieties of P. deltoides, var deltoides and var occidentalis, showed distinct cp genomes/DNA. Three distinct cp genomes/DNA, separated by a loss or gain of 1 EcoRV restriction site and/or 1 restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP), were observed among the individuals of P. deltoides var deltoides. Within P. nigra, cpDNA of var italica was distinct from that of vars nigra and plantierensis by one RFLP and by a loss or gain of one BamHI restriction site. Populus maximowiczii clones of Chinese origin were separated from those of Japanese origin by a gain or loss of one ClaI restriction site in their cpDNA. The estimate of nucleotide substitutions per site in cpDNA was 0.07% between two varieties of P. deltoides, 0.05% between var italica and var nigra or plantierensis of P. nigra, and 0.01% between Japanese and Chinese accessions of P. maximowiczii.  相似文献

Using an enrichment procedure, we have cloned microsatellite repeats from black poplar (Populus nigra L.) and developed primers for microsatellite marker analysis. Ten primer pairs, mostly for trinucleotide repeats, produced polymorphic fragments in P. nigra. Some of them also showed amplification in other poplar species. (P. deltoides, P. tricocarpa, P. tremula, P. tremuloides, P. candicans, P. lasiocarpa). The best six loci were tested on 23 P. nigra genotypes collected across Europe. The microsatellites produced up to 12 alleles per locus in this set, with observed heterozygosity between 0.32 and 0.91.  相似文献

European Black Poplar (Populus nigra) is considered a rare and endangered tree species because of severe reduction of its natural riverine habitat and potential hybridisation with the related non-indigenous taxa P. deltoides and P. x canadensis. As it is difficult to distinguish these taxa solely based on their morphology, we applied a PCR-based assay with an easy-to-use and robust molecular marker set (cpDNA trnL-trnF/RsaI RFLP, nDNA win3 and nDNA POPX/MspI RFLP) in order to identify pure P. nigra. Different plant tissues could be used for fast and standardised DNA extraction. The application of the three marker types was tested on a number of different Populus taxa, and they were also used for the verification of pure P. nigra in a sample of 304 putative P. nigra individuals from Switzerland. Cross-checking of the DNA data with those using a traditional allozyme approach resulted in complete agreement. The availability of molecular identification methods is an important prerequisite for the conservation of European Black Poplar, because pure, non-introgressed plant material can then be used in restoration projects of European floodplains.  相似文献
