The features of the spatial distribution, size and age structure of populations, and growth of the bivalve mollusk Septifer bilocularis (Linnaeus, 1758) were investigated for the first time in the waters of Vietnam. It is shown that in the subtidal area, on reefs well protected from wave effects, S. bilocularis occupies a corallogenous substrate constructed of dead branchy colonies of Acropora and Porites and forms settlements there with a population density and biomass exceeding those in populations located along the open coast and developing on massive coral colonies of the genera Porites, Favia, and Favites. The extensive accumulation of sediments in the inner part of Vanphong Bay (Khanh Hoa Province) correlated with a decrease in the size and age ranges for populations of S. bilocularis. It is found that in places with regularly active hydrodynamics the mollusks grew somewhat more slowly and formed a more convex shell than on reefs protected from surf. The longevity of S. bilocularis estimated both from the greatest observed age and from the growth equation of Bertalanffy was somewhat greater in the former case compared with the latter one, but in general did not exceed 11 years for both cases. The results of the studies are discussed from the position of morphophysiological adaptations of sessile bivalve mollusks to life in contrasting environmental conditions of the upper subtidal zone.  相似文献

Mollusk remains are abundant in archaeological sites in the Guanzhong Basin of Northwestern China, providing good opportunities for investigations into the use of mollusks by prehistoric humans. Here we report on freshwater gastropod and bivalve mollusks covering the time interval from about 5600 to 4500 cal. yrs BP from sites of Mid-Late Neolithic age. They are identified as Cipangopaludina chinensis and Unio douglasiae, both of which are currently food for humans. The shells are well preserved and have no signs of abrasion. They are all freshwater gastropods and bivalves found in pits without water-reworked deposits and have modern representatives which can be observed in rivers, reservoirs, and paddy fields in the studied region. Mollusk shells were frequently recovered in association with mammal bones, lithic artifacts, and pottery. These lines of evidence indicate that the mollusks are the remains of prehistoric meals. The mollusk shells were likely discarded into the pits by prehistoric humans after the flesh was eaten. However, these mollusk remains may not have been staple food since they are not found in large quantities. Mollusk shell tools and ornaments are also observed. Shell tools include shell knives, shell reaphooks and arrowheads, whereas shell ornaments are composed of pendants and loops. All the shell tools and ornaments are made of bivalve mollusks and do not occur in large numbers. The finding of these freshwater mollusk remains supports the view that the middle Holocene climate in the Guanzhong Basin may have been warm and moist, which was probably favorable to freshwater mollusks growing and developing in the region.  相似文献

In mollusks, the shell mineralization process is controlled by an array of proteins, glycoproteins and polysaccharides that collectively constitute the shell matrix. In spite of numerous researches, the shell protein content of a limited number of model species has been investigated. This paper presents biochemical data on the common edible land snail Helix aspersa maxima, a model organism for ecotoxicological purposes, which has however been poorly investigated from a biomineralization viewpoint. The shell matrix of this species was extracted and analyzed biochemically for functional in vitro inhibition assay, for amino acid and monosaccharides compositions. The matrix was further analyzed on 1 and 2D gels and short partial protein sequences were obtained from 2D gel spots. Serological comparisons were established with a set of heterologous antibodies, two of which were subsequently used for subsequent immunogold localization of matrix components. Our data suggest that the shell matrix of Helix aspersa maxima may differ widely from the shell secretory repertoire of the marine mollusks studied so far, such as the gastropod Haliotis or the pearl oyster Pinctada. In particular, most of the biochemical properties generally attributed to soluble shell matrices, such as calcium-binding capability, or the capacity to interfere in vitro with the precipitation of calcium carbonate or to inhibit the precipitation of calcium carbonate, were not recorded with this matrix. This drastic change in the biochemical properties of the landsnail shell matrix puts into question the existence of a unique molecular model for molluscan shell formation, and may be related to terrestrialisation.  相似文献

The growth and shell morphology of bivalve mollusks Crenomytilus grayanus, Mytilus coruscus, and Modiolus modiolus from the Sea of Japan are examined. The changes in body proportions and shell form in the ontogenesis of C. grayanus, M. coruscus, and M. modiolus are different even in the cases when the mussels develop in similar environmental conditions. Rapid growth shapes a well-streamlined and flat form of shell; slow growth leads to the formation of a massive and convex form. The parameters of the Bertalanffy growth curve for each species are calculated. The differences are discussed from the standpoint of functional morphology and spatial distribution patterns of mytilids in the coastal areas of the sea.  相似文献

Human societies utilize mollusks for myriad material and spiritual ends. An example of their use in a religious context is found in Brazil's African-derived belief systems. Candomblé, an Afro-Brazilian religion introduced during the 18th-19th centuries by enslaved Yoruba, includes various magical and liturgical uses of mollusks. This work inventoried the species utilized by adherents and to analyzed their symbolic and magical context. Data were obtained from Candomblé temples in two cities in the northeast of Brazil-Caruaru, in the state of Pernambuco, and Campina Grande, in the state of Paraíba. Questionnaires administered to eleven adepts revealed that at least nineteen mollusk species are being used. Shells from Monetaria moneta, M. annulus and Erosaria caputserpentis were cited by all of the interviewees. Three uses stood out: divination (jogo de búzios); utilization as ritual objects; and employment as sacrificial offerings (Igbin or Boi-de-Oxalá). The jogo de búzios (shell toss), employed in West Africa, Brazil and Cuba, is of fundamental importance to the cult, representing the means by which the faithful enter in contact with the divinities (Orixás) and consult people's futures (Odu). The utilization of mollusks in Candomblé is strongly influenced by ancient Yoruba myths (Itãs) which, having survived enslavement and generations of captive labor, continue to guide the lives of Brazil's African Diaspora.  相似文献

Fairly large Mytilus trossulus beds were found in the subtidal zone at depths to 40 m off the western coast of Kamchatka. The size and age composition of local populations and growth rates of M. trossulus in this region and at Atlasova Island were studied. Significant variability of the shell shape of mollusks was found. In the western Kamchatka subtidal, M. trossulus grew faster than in the northern Kuril Islands and eastern Kamchatka. Mussels attained commercial size (50 mm in shell length) in the fourth year of life in the former case and in the fifth-sixth year in other cases. Mollusks of different ages, from 1 to 8–9 year olds, were present in western Kamchatka populations; i.e., juvenile recruitment takes place regularly, while growth rates vary. Growth and population structure of M. trossulus are discussed in relation to the habitat conditions on the western Kamchatka shelf.  相似文献

The relationships between the shell height of the predatory gastropod Cryptonatica janthostoma and the shell length of its typical prey, the bivalve Ruditapes philippinarum, and the diameter of the borehole on the prey shell resulting from a successful attack of the predator were experimentally found and assessed statistically. The shell height of C. janthostoma calculated retrospectively from the borehole diameter using the obtained relationships was 17–52 mm. The prey of C. janthostoma are burrowing bivalves, whose populations are affected by the predator to a varying degree. In populations of medium-sized mollusks (R. philippinarum, Protothaca euglypta, P. jedoensis, and others), C. janthostoma feeds on mollusks larger than 7–10 mm; in species with a shell length greater than 100 mm (Callista brevisiphonata, Saxidomus purpuratus), it eats specimens of 10–58 mm. C. janthostoma apparently has no effect on populations of small-sized mollusks (Anisocorbula venusta) and mollusks with an active avoidance response (Clinocardium californiense).  相似文献

The features of the group linear growth of the bivalve Callista brevisiphonata were studied over a large part of its range in the Sea of Japan along the mainland coast of Russia. It was found that in the south of the species range in the Peter the Great Bay, the shell length in individuals of the same age can differ by almost 1.5 times, depending on the position of the population relative to the open sea. With propagation from south to north, trends to a decreasing growth rate and a narrowing of the range of age variation in shell length were recorded in C. brevisiphonata populations. It was shown that the clams need 5–18 years to reach their commercial size (a shell length of more than 70 mm). The observed differences in growth rate are considered in connection to the habitat environment of C. brevisiphonata.  相似文献

Zones with peculiar microornamentation interpreted as muscle scars were found on the internal molds of the Early Cambrian gastropod genus Bemella Missarzhevsky, 1969 (family Helcionellidae). Shell muscles of helcionellids are reconstructed based on the topographic pattern of muscle scars, i.e., the pedal, cephalic, and mantle retractors are recognized. The reconstruction proposed here of the shell musculature corroborates affinity between ancient gastropod and helcionelloid mollusks.  相似文献

Serpulid-dominated shell beds from the Lower Bajocian (Middle Jurassic) of the Central High Atlas (Morocco) are primarily formed by quadrangular tubes of the serpulid polychaete Nogrobs moroccensis sp. nov. The transverse tube ornament consisting predominately of wrinkles, the lack of narrow spirals and the shortness or absence of attached posterior tube portion represent the diagnostic features of this new species. Tubes of Nogrobs moroccensis co-occur with gastropods and oyster–crinoidal debris. We suggest that these serpulids were free-lying in their adult stage and formed benthic meadows on soft-bottom habitats. They frequently show parallel alignment in plane views in both graded and non-graded, few-cm-thick shell beds, corresponding to distal tempestites deposited close to and below storm wave base in an outer-ramp environment. The excellent preservation of serpulids implies short residence time on the seafloor, and the lack of compositional mixing with other communities and their restriction to outer-ramp habitats indicate that they represent parautochthonous assemblages. Analyses of serpulid orientation on the bottom bedding planes of shell beds revealed weak unidirectional arrangement of tubes, whereas orientation on the top bedding planes revealed strong unidirectional arrangement of tubes, with significantly different orientation relative to the bottom planes. This change could suggest a shift from predominantly a current component of the combined storm flow (with uneven seafloor surface and adhesion of skeletal grains to muddy substrate) to significant oscillatory component of the waning storm, as also suggested by bidirectional orientation of gastropods.  相似文献

A new order, Anetshelloida ordo nov., of the class Rostroconchia (Mollusca) is described. Morphological structures of Anetshella golowkinskyi (Netchaev, 1894), the only member of the order, are described in detail and are analyzed from the point of view of their origin, development, functional significance, and adaptive morphological changes. The paired muscle scars and presumable variants of the internal structure of Anetshella gen. nov. are described. Probable mechanism for the shell growth in rostroconch mollusks is discussed. It is shown that the pattern of differentiation of the pallial field in Anetshella combines the characters of both helcionelloid and conocardioid mollusks.  相似文献

According to the results of a comparative analysis of the size and age structures of samples from a population of the bivalve mollusk Ruditapes philippinarum (Manila clam) and from shell assemblages of this species, the possibility of data acquisition on populations using samples from shell assemblages was assessed. A considerable coincidence of these parameters after taking the losses of small individuals during formation of shell assemblage into account, which depended on the location and conditions of assemblage formation, was recorded. Due to the good level of preservation of the shells of older individuals, the sample from the assemblage gave a more comprehensive appreciation of the maximum size and life span of the species than the sample of live mollusks from the natural habitat. Samples from shell assemblages may be used for growth rate estimation of clams without catching live individuals, as the results from studying the linear growth of mollusks based on samples from live populations and from shell assemblages did not differ significantly. Samples from many-year shell accumulations can also be useful for revealing the periods of the highest death rates, the most vulnerable periods in the ontogenesis of the mollusks, and, in some cases, the causes of their death.  相似文献

In Minonosok Bay, in a region of long-term industrial mariculture of mollusks, a steady biohydrochemical complex with increased organic matter content has been formed, in which the meiobenthos community was represented by a rather complete set of taxonomic groups of low population density. There were 16 groups (order, class) of the meiobenthos revealed, and the greatest population density was recorded in the central part of the bay under installations with suspended mollusks, (333000 ind./m2). Nematodes dominated in the eumeiobenthos; however, crustaceans prevailed in the bottom water layer and sediments at stations with increased oxygen content. Bivalves and gastropods dominated in the pseudomeiobenthos. Correlation analysis has revealed the dependence of the population density of the total meiobenthos and eumeiobenthos on the type of ground. There were 42 nematode species revealed; Axonolaimus seticaudatus, Enoplolaimus medius, Daptonema sp., Paracomesoma sp., and Oncholaimium paraolium dominated. Three nematode taxocens were discriminated by dominating species in the population density and results of cluster analysis of the data. Detritivorous nematodes prevailed in all types of ground. A correlation was found between the index of species diversity of nematodes and the content of organic carbon in the ground.  相似文献

The rate of burrowing into sand by the bivalve mollusk Venerupis philippinarum was studied under laboratory conditions. It is found that an increase in the intensity of water flow to an average of 1000 ml/min stimulates the burrowing of the mollusk, while higher values suppress burrowing; the threshold values are somewhat different for the young and adult specimens. It is shown that the presence of the starfish Asterias amurensis in the experimental environment decreases the rate of burrowing of V. philippinarum by 10–20% depending upon the sizes of the predator and the potential victim, but the depth of penetration of the mollusks into the sediment increases. It is supposed that in V. philippinarum and other species of bivalve mollusks related to the same life form and characterized by a moderate capability to burrow into the ground, the adaptive strategy of threat avoiding (great wave activity, an approach of a predator) is expressed as burrowing into a depth uncommon for usual situations and waiting. This behavior, to a significant degree, provides the capability of some species to inhabit shallow water areas with poor hydrodynamics inhabited by numerous predators.  相似文献

Shell chirality among Cambrian gastropods is discussed. It is demonstrated that the earliest members of the class include chiral aberrations with abnormal opposite coiling of the shell. It is assumed that, in Cambrian gastropods, speciation could have occurred by mutation in the locus determining the chirality, as is proposed for extant gastropods. In contrast to modern gastropods, the existence of chiral morphs within single species has not been recorded in Cambrian mollusks, whereas the presence of chiral twin species is possible. The systematic position of sinistral representatives of the genus Aldanella Vostokova, 1962 is considered. Aldanella golubevi sp. nov. with sinistral shell is described from the base of the Tommotian Stage of the Anabar Region. Aberrant sinistral specimens of the normally dextral species Aldanella utchurica Missarzhevsky in Rozanov et al., 1969 and Pelagiella adunca Missarzhevsky in Rozanov et al., 1969 are figured.  相似文献

Multiple ferritin subunit genes are reported in mollusks, but they have not been systematically classified. Based on the recently published whole genome sequence, we screened out the four ferritin subunit genes (cgi-fer1–cgi-fer4) from the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas. The four genes were predicted to encode two non-secretory and two secretory peptides. Further phylogenetic analyses revealed two groups of non-secretory and secretory ferritin subunits in mollusks. This differs dramatically from the situation in mammals or insects, which contain only non-secretory or secretory ferritin subunits. These results emphasize the evolution of molluscan ferritin subunit genes. The expression patterns of the four genes during early development exhibited dramatic differences, indicating the functional diversity of these genes. Among them, cgi-fer2 was the only gene expressed prevalently and is thus suggested to be the major house-keeping ferritin subunit gene. The expression of the other three genes was tissue-specific beginning in the D-veliger stage. Based on their expression patterns, we inferred important functions of cgi-fer2 in ciliated tissues and of the other three genes in the digestive system. Moreover, our results indicated potentially different roles of ferritin subunit genes during larval shell formation in gastropods and bivalves, which may be helpful in understanding the molecular mechanisms that cause the different shells of gastropods and bivalves. In addition, we conducted a further semi-quantitative analysis of the four genes in four major developmental stages and five adult tissues. The results also revealed dramatically different expression patterns of the genes, which brought additional functional indications. This work may promote studies on molluscan ferritins and shed light on the evolution of ferritin subunit genes among different animal groups.  相似文献

The results of an integrated examination of the state of the scallopMizuhopecten yessoensis in Alekseeva Bight (Peter the Great Bay, Sea of Japan) are presented. In mollusks of different ages, shell height was measured; in animals of commercial size (over 100 mm), some size and weight characteristics (annual increment of shell and adductor muscle and soft tissue weight) were determined. The morphology of the digestive gland and gills was studied. In the adductor muscle and digestive gland, the concentration of heavy metals (HMs) (Hg, Cu, Zn, Mn, Pb, Cd, Ni, Co, and Cr) was determined. In the digestive gland, metallothionein and reduced glutathione concentration was also determined, as was the activity of glutathione-dependent enzymes (glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase). In scallops collected outside Alekseeva Bight, the linear growth rate and adductor muscle weight were on average 1.3 and 1.7 times greater, respectively, than in those collected in the bight. In scallop organs, numerous histomorphological alterations were revealed: digestive cell vacuolization and hemocyte infiltration of the digestive gland, hyperplasia and vacuolization of the respiratory epithelium, and connective tissue hypertrophy in gill filaments. The biochemical parameters of scallops from Alekseeva Bight differed substantially from those of mollusks collected outside the bight. We conclude that one of the factors negatively affecting the state of theM. yessoensis population in Alekseeva Bight is the contamination of the bight with HMs, especially mercury. This is consistent with the results of chemical analysis of bottom sediments and tissues of two mytilid species,Modiolus kurilensis andCrenomytilus grayanus, specimens of which were collected in the bight together with the scallops [3].  相似文献

Feeding of the Okhotsk sculpin Myoxocephalus ochotensis, an endemic of the northern part of the Sea of Okhotsk, is studied on the materials of two bottom trawl surveys in 2004–2005 in the Gulf of Shelikhov. The quantitative and qualitative characteristics of its food spectrum depending on the linear sizes are given. It is revealed that its food spectrum includes the crustaceans, mollusks, fishes, and polychaeta. In the composition of crustaceans being a basic food group, the gammarids and small species of shrimps are replaced by crabs and large shrimps as the fishes grow. It is found that the individuals of the Okhotsk sculpin with a length from 15 to 20 cm have a mixed type of feeding, and the fishes larger than 20 cm are predators to a greater extent.  相似文献

Calcineurin (CN) is a multifunctional protein involved in many important physiological processes in mammalians, but the function of CN in mollusks is still largely unknown. In the present study, through the shell regeneration system, the changes of enzymatic activity of CN were determined in the process of shell regeneration in pearl oyster Pinctada fucata. CN was activated immediately and continuously in the shell regeneration process. The speed of shell regeneration was measured and the ultrastructure of inner shell surface was observed by scanning electron microscopy after inhibiting CN by intramuscular injection of immunosuppresant cyclosporine A (CsA). The results showed that the speed of shell regeneration was delayed and the morphology of calcite and aragonite in the inner shell surface became abnormal when CN was inhibited by CsA. Meanwhile, RT-PCR analysis revealed that the expression of P. fucata BMP-2 in mantle tissue decreased with CsA injection. In vitro secretion level of proteoglycans (PGs) in primary cultures of mantle cells was also decreased when mantle cells were exposed to CsA. Taken together, our results, for the first time, show that CN is involved in the shell formation through regulating the expression of Pf-BMP-2 in mantle tissue, which controls the secretion of PGs/GAGs of the mantle epithelial cells.  相似文献

Three arbitrary primers produced 114 RAPD markers for 37 cercariae from nine Bucephalus polymorphus sporocysts obtained from three Dreissena polymorpha mollusks, which were collected in two water reservoirs of the Volga basin. Analysis of the RAPD patterns established a unique genotype for each cercaria. The topology of an UPGMA dendrogram did not reliably differentiate the cercaria according to the corresponding sporocysts. However, three groups of genotypes were isolated and corresponded to the host mollusks, indicating that each cercaria clone had a different genotype set. A within-sporocyst variation made the greatest contribution (53.0%) to the total RAPD diversity, while the contributions of within-host and between-host variations to the total diversity were equal (23.5%). Cercariae isolated from two mollusks of the Rybinskoe Water Reservoir were more similar to each other than to cercariae from the geographically distant Gor’kovskoe Water Reservoir. Possible causes and distribution specifics of the observed genetic diversity of B. polymorphus are discussed.  相似文献
