  1. Terrestrial plant populations located at the margins of species’ distributions often display reduced sexual reproduction and an increased reliance on asexual reproduction. One hypothesis to explain this phenomenon is that the decline is associated with environmental effects on the energetic costs to produce reproductive organs.
  2. In order to clarify the changing processes of sexual reproduction along an elevational gradient, we investigated the sexual reproductive parameters, such as the number of sporophytes and gametangia, in Racomitrium lanuginosum, a dioicous moss found on Mt. Fuji.
  3. Matured sporophytes were present only below 3,000 m, and the number of sporophytes per shoot tended to be lower at higher elevation habitats. The numbers of male inflorescences per shoot and antheridia per inflorescence and shoot significantly decreased with increasing elevation. In contrast, the numbers of female inflorescences per shoot and archegonia per inflorescence and shoot varied little across elevations.
  4. Synthesis. Our results suggest that the reasons for this limitation are assumed to be limitations in sporophyte development that result in abortion, and the spatial segregation between males and females. Possible reasons for the abortion of sporophytes are the inhibitory effects of low air temperature, a shortened growth period, and winter environmental conditions at higher elevations. Remarkable differences between male and female on various reproductive parameters found in this study are thought to affect the mode of sexual reproduction under the harsh environment. These differences between males and females may be caused by differences in the costs of production and development of gametangia, sensitivity to environmental stressors, and phenological patterns.

cirpus mariqueter Tang et Zhang is a typical pioneer plant colonizing the bare beaches of the Yangtse River estuary. To explore the life history strategy of the species with reference to environmental physical stress, the biomass allocations to different plant components and some related morphological parameters were examined along an elevational gradient within a salt marsh. Authors found that S. mariqueter performed best at medium elevation within the marsh, with relatively high density of shoot and individual ramet dry mass. Biomass allocation to corm was the highest at low elevations, and the least at high elevations, suggesting that a conservative strategy was adopted by the species to cope with the harsh physical conditions at the low elevation. The investment in rhizome decreased from low to high elevations, while the proportion of inflorescence mass increased, indicating that during the life history, the species shifts from predominant asexual reproduction to predominant sexual reproduction. This may be favourable for the species to colonize larger area, and to spread and persist at a meta-population level. Correlation analyses showed that sexual reproduction was inversely related to growth and asexual reproduction. However, it is difficult to determine the relationship between asexual reproduction and growth possibly because of the varied function of the corms of the species in different life history stages.  相似文献

The genetic variation in a partially asexual organism is investigated by two models suited for different time scales. Only selectively neutral variation is considered. Model 1 shows, by the use of a coalescence argument, that three sexually derived individuals per generation are sufficient to give a population the same pattern of allelic variation as found in fully sexually reproducing organisms. With less than one sexual event every third generation, the characteristic pattern expected for asexual organisms appear, with strong allelic divergence between the gene copies in individuals. At intermediary levels of sexuality, a complex situation reigns. The pair-wise allelic divergence under partial sexuality exceeds, however, always the corresponding value under full sexuality. These results apply to large populations with stable reproductive systems. In a more general framework, Model 2 shows that a small number of sexual individuals per generation is sufficient to make an apparently asexual population highly genotypically variable. The time scale in terms of generations needed to produce this effect is given by the population size and the inverse of the rate of sexuality.  相似文献

运用Biolog EcoPlate技术, 对武夷山不同海拔植被带(常绿阔叶林(EBF)、针叶林(CF)、亚高山矮林(DF)、高山草甸(AM))土壤微生物群落多样性差异进行了研究。结果表明: 不同海拔植被带土壤微生物群落功能多样性差异显著。土壤平均颜色变化率(AWCD)随培养时间延长而逐渐增加, 同一深度土层的AWCD值随海拔升高而逐渐降低, 大小顺序依次为EFB > CF > DF > AM。同一海拔植被带, 不同深度土层的AWCD值总体趋势依次为0-10 cm > 10-25 cm > 25-40 cm。土壤微生物群落Simpson指数、Shannon-Wiener指数、丰富度指数和McIntosh指数的总体趋势为EBF最高, CF和DF次之, AM最低。不同海拔植被带土壤微生物对不同碳源利用强度存在较大差异, 其中EBF利用率最高, AM利用率最低, 碳水化合物和羧酸类碳源是各海拔植被带土壤微生物的主要碳源。主成分分析结果表明, 从31个因素中提取的与碳源利用相关的主成分1、主成分2分别能解释变量方差的75.27%和16.14%, 在主成分分离中起主要贡献作用的是胺类和氨基酸类碳源。土壤微生物群落多样性随着海拔上升、土层加深而逐渐下降的原因, 可能是生物量、林分凋落物、土壤养分、微小动物、植物根系等多种因素共同作用的结果。  相似文献

Particularly in polyploids, the potential of the high variability of dominant markers such as random amplified polymorphic DNA fragments (RAPDs) and amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLPs) in population genetic studies and analysis of breeding systems is reduced due to their dominant nature. In contrast, the criterion of character compatibility is hindered neither by dominance nor by polyploidy as allelic interpretation is not necessary. Character compatibility, which can be used to detect events of genetic exchange (or recombination), is particularly informative if these events are expected to be rare such as in taxa with extensive vegetative reproduction or apomixis. Binary unordered characters such as presence and absence of anonymous DNA markers are incompatible if all four pairwise combinations of character states are present among the individuals studied. Because incompatible character state distributions defy any progenitor–derivative relationship among individuals, they provide strong evidence for genetic exchange. Both the absolute number of incompatible character combinations and the probability of compatibility can be used as a measure of incompatibility. Although these measures may not directly relate to the frequency of genetic exchange, they provide a useful tool to heuristically explore data sets. The most commonly used input for multivariate analyses and analysis of molecular variance in population genetic studies of (dis)similarity of marker distributions are amalgamates of mutation and recombination. Character compatibility can be used to complement these traditional methods of analysis. Advantages and disadvantages of character incompatibility relative to multilocus analysis of modes of reproduction and population genetics are demonstrated with data from RAPDs, isozymes, and restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) of the nuclear ribosomal and chloroplast genome.  相似文献

海三棱草 (ScirpusmariqueterTangetZhang)是一种典型的先锋植物。它能占据于长江口盐沼的光滩上 ,生境非常恶劣。为探索该物种在高度环境胁迫下的生活史策略 ,测定了它在高程梯度上的生物量分配 ,以及有关形态学参数。结果发现海三棱草在中位高程时密度和单株生物量最高 ,生长最好。在由低及高的高程梯度上 ,球茎、根状茎的生物量分配比例逐渐下降 ,表明植物体在光滩前沿采取保守策略 ;而花序的比例则逐渐上升 ,表明植物在生活史过程中 ,由无性生殖向有性生殖的转变。这种转变可能有利于种群的扩散和生存。另外 ,相关分析表明 ,有性生殖性状与无性生殖、生长性状呈负相关 ,但无性生殖与生长性状间的关系难以确定 ,可能由于球茎在不同生活史阶段的不同功能引起。  相似文献

通过对长江口崇明东滩盐沼海三棱燕草带大型底栖无脊椎动物进行取样调查,研究了不同盐沼底栖动物群落结构及其多样性特征,分析了盐沼植物群落特征与底栖动物群落的关系。研究发现。(1)沿着河口盐沼海拔梯度,从低位盐沼到高位盐沼,底栖动物群落结构及多样性具有明显的梯度变化;(2)盐沼植被与底栖动物群落有密切的关系,尤其是植株高度,地下部分生物量与底栖动物密度,Shannon-Weiner多样性指数,物种丰度的相关性最显著。(3)盐沼植被影响底栖动物群落,是由于植物的地下部分和地下部分结构导致盐沼生境结构复杂,增加了沉积物表层环境的结构异质性,使生境多样化,给底栖动物提供大量生活空间,(4)不同盐沼带海三陵蔗草群落的差异,提供了盐沼表层地貌的变化,这种变化及植物结构的复杂化,在这一些动物提供拓殖地的同时,也为底栖动物躲避捕食者提供了避护所;(5)盐沼植被可以改变口潮滩生境中的沉积环境,并通过消浪、缓流及调节有机质的输入动态和沉积作用而影响底栖动物群落的组成和结构。  相似文献

This study examined the flowering phenology and reproductive traits of the Solidago virgaurea complex at four elevations in the subalpine zone in Japan using a bagging experiment. Flowering started earlier at higher elevations. Syrphid flies mainly visited flowers of the S. virgaurea complex, and the number of visits was considerably lower at the lowest elevation than at the three other elevations. Although the number of seeds per individual did not differ among the four elevations, total achene weight per individual was lower at the lowest elevation than at the three other elevations. The weight of an achene and seed germination rate of the control were much greater at higher elevations than at the lowest elevation. The weight of an achene and germination rate for the control were as low as the bagging treatment at the lowest elevation with infrequent flower visitors, which indicates that the S. virgaurea complex is a facultative outcrosser. The S. virgaurea complex is thought to produce seeds during a short growing season at high elevations by starting to flower earlier, and the large seed size is advantageous for seedling establishment at high elevations. Therefore, elevational changes in flowering phenology and reproductive traits are thought to be an adaptation to the short growing season at high elevations.  相似文献

Abstract. Modern pollen assemblages from 16 small lakes (< 2.5 ha) and 11 moderate-sized lakes (4.5–19.3 ha) arrayed along an elevational gradient (300 to 1320 m) in the east-central Adirondack Mountains were studied to determine how well the pollen assemblages recorded patterns of forest composition along the gradient. Forest composition ranges from Pinus strobus/Tsuga/ hardwoods forests at low elevations through Tsuga/ hardwoods, hardwoods, and Picea/Abies forests to Abies-dominated forests at high elevations. Modern pollen percentages for 10 tree taxa were compared with lake elevation using scatter plots and correlation and regression analysis. Differential smoothing of vegetational patterns along the elevational gradient occurred among the 10 taxa owing to differences in pollen dispersibility, pollen production, and spatial pattern of taxon abundance in forests of the region. No differences were observed in pollen-elevation patterns between small and moderate-sized lakes. Pollen-elevation patterns were obscured for most taxa when the gradient was shortened (e.g. to 600–1320 m) owing to increased spatial smoothing by pollen dispersal. Design and interpretation of paleoecological studies of spatial gradients can be improved by careful attention to site spacing, gradient length, and gradient steepness in the context of pollen dispersal and representation models.  相似文献

How avian reproductive behavior changes at high elevations, and whether changes are the result of adaptation or constraint remains unclear. We compared clutch and egg sizes in two populations of Tree Swallows (Tachycineta bicolor), one at an elevation of ~2500 m a.s.l. in Wyoming's Bighorn Mountains and the other at ~1350 m at the base of these mountains. Females at the high‐elevation site began laying 10 d later, on average, than females at the lower site. Females at the high site laid an average of 0.4 fewer eggs than those at the low site, a significant difference. Eggs were also slightly (2.3%), but significantly, smaller at the high site. Smaller clutches and eggs at the high site may have resulted in part from greater energetic constraints on females. Females at this site faced colder, windier weather during egg formation which would have increased thermoregulatory costs while simultaneously reducing the abundance of prey, i.e., flying insects. Laying a relatively small clutch at the high‐elevation site may also be adaptive, however. Having a smaller brood could help ensure there is an adequate supply of food for each offspring during bouts of inclement weather that are more severe at higher elevations. Also, if the delay in breeding inherent at high elevations reduces the survival prospects of the young, then producing fewer young could enhance a female's chances of breeding again, perhaps at a different location.  相似文献

裸肉足虫作为联结微生物和大中型土壤动物的重要环节, 在土壤生态系统物质循环和能量流动过程中起着重要作用。为探明裸肉足虫群落沿海拔梯度的分布特征及其主要驱动因子, 作者在长白山北坡选择不同海拔梯度(700 m、1,000 m、1,300 m、1,600 m、1,900 m和2,200 m), 采用最大可能数法对裸肉足虫进行了培养计数, 并采用平板培养、标记、分离再培养的方法进行了分类鉴定, 分析比较了不同海拔梯度裸肉足虫的群落组成和结构特征。结果表明: 长白山北坡裸肉足虫物种丰富, 不同海拔梯度裸肉足虫丰富度指数存在显著差异, 且与土壤酸碱度呈极显著正相关关系。其中林分较为单一的岳桦(Betula ermanii)林带(1,900 m)裸肉足虫丰富度最低, 位于植被交错带的针阔混交林带(1,000 m)裸肉足虫丰富度最大, Shannon-Wiener多样性指数和Pielou均匀度指数在不同海拔梯度间不存在显著性差异, 但变化趋势与丰富度一致。聚类分析结果显示, 1,300 m、1,600 m和1,900 m海拔带以及700 m和2,200 m海拔带裸肉足虫群落组成较为相似。典范对应分析(canonical correspondence analysis, CCA)显示, 裸肉足虫群落组成和结构主要受土壤酸碱度、铵态氮以及碳氮比的影响, 而海拔和土壤含水量对其没有显著影响。综上, 裸肉足虫群落多样性随海拔梯度的增加并未呈现递减或单峰的变化趋势, 土壤的基本理化性质是驱动裸肉足虫群落分布的主要因素; 此外, 地上植被也可能通过凋落物和根系分泌物间接影响裸肉足虫的群落组成和多样性。  相似文献

Natural hybrid zones provide opportunities to study a range of evolutionary phenomena from speciation to the genetic basis of fitness-related traits. We show that widespread hybridization has occurred between two neo-tropical stream fishes with partial reproductive isolation. Phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial sequence data showed that the swordtail fish Xiphophorus birchmanni is monophyletic and that X. malinche is part of an independent monophyletic clade with other species. Using informative single nucleotide polymorphisms in one mitochondrial and three nuclear intron loci, we genotyped 776 specimens collected from twenty-three sites along seven separate stream reaches. Hybrid zones occurred in replicated fashion in all stream reaches along a gradient from high to low elevation. Genotyping revealed substantial variation in parental and hybrid frequencies among localities. Tests of F(IS) and linkage disequilibrium (LD) revealed generally low F(IS) and LD except in five populations where both parental species and hybrids were found suggesting incomplete reproductive isolation. In these locations, heterozygote deficiency and LD were high, which suggests either selection against early generation hybrids or assortative mating. These data lay the foundation to study the adaptive basis of the replicated hybrid zone structure and for future integration of behaviour and genetics to determine the processes that lead to the population genetic patterns observed in these hybrid zones.  相似文献

Geographic variation in the diversity, abundance or composition of plant and frugivore assemblages may have consequences for seed dispersal processes. Such variations may be related to climatic conditions as well as habitat characteristics such as fruit availability and forest complexity. Studying frugivore assemblages and seed dispersal processes along an elevational gradient can help to elucidate the interplay between the extent of dispersal services provided by frugivores and the geographic variability of the food resources. We studied frugivore assemblages on and fruit removal from 28 rowan trees (Sorbus aucuparia) along an elevational gradient in the Bavarian Forest, Germany. Both, the number of frugivore species and the number of frugivore individuals were significantly enhanced by high fruit availability. In both cases we found a slight interaction between elevation and fruit availability indicating a higher attractiveness of fruits for frugivores at lower than at higher elevations. A high number of frugivore individuals in turn significantly increased fruit removal from rowan trees. Here, we found a significant interaction between elevation and the number of frugivore individuals suggesting that the number of frugivores is of major importance for fruit removal particularly at lower elevations. Path analysis corroborated that the number of frugivore individuals indirectly mediated the effect of fruit availability on fruit removal. These findings suggest that fruit removal is rather influenced by changes in habitat characteristics than in climatic conditions across space.  相似文献

Aim

We investigated changes in dung beetle β‐diversity components along a subtropical elevational gradient, to test whether turnover or nestedness‐related processes drive the dissimilarity of assemblages at spatial and temporal scales.

Location

An elevational gradient (200–1,600 m a.s.l.) of the Atlantic Forest in southern Brazil.

Methods

We investigated the extent to which β‐diversity varied along the elevational gradient (six elevations) at both spatial (among sites at different elevations) and temporal (different months at the same site) scales. We compared both the turnover and nestedness‐related dissimilarity of species and genera using multiple‐site or multiple‐month measures and tested whether these measurements were different from random expectations.

Results

A mid‐elevation peak in species richness along the elevational gradient was observed, and the lowest richness occurred at the highest elevations. We found two different groups of species, lowland and highland species, with a mixing of groups at intermediate elevations. The turnover component of β‐diversity was significantly higher for both spatial (i.e. elevational) and temporal changes in species composition. However, when the data for genera by site were considered, the elevational turnover value decreased in relative importance. Nestedness‐related processes are more important for temporal dissimilarity patterns at higher elevation sites.

Main conclusions

Spatial and temporal turnover of dung beetle species is the most important component of β‐diversity along the elevational gradient. High‐elevation assemblages are not subsets of assemblages that inhabit lower elevations, but this relationship ceases when β‐diversity is measured at the generic level. Environmental changes across elevations may be the cause of the differential establishment of distinctive species, but these species typically belong to the same higher taxonomic rank. Conservation strategies should consider elevational gradients in case‐specific scenarios as they may contain distinct species assemblages in lowlands vs. highlands.

The fecundity of asexual and sexual morphs of Sitobion avenae (F.) is compared. The cost of sex is quantified in terms of the reduction in numbers of offspring produced. The cost is much greater than the halving of fecundity that is usually assumed to be associated with the production of males.
Résumé Les fécondités des virginipares ailés, des gynopares ailés et des ovipares d'un même clone de Sitobion avenae ont été déterminées à 12°C. Bien que les types qui ayant donné naissance à des sexués aient eu une fécondité initiale plus élevée que celle de la lignée asexuée, celle-ci a été significativement plus féconde après 15 jours de reproduction.Les résultats du laboratoire ont été utilisés pour évaluer la fécondité de lignées sexuées et asexuées pendant quatre générations à 12°C. La reproduction parthénogénétique a présenté un avantage numérique sur la reproductions sexuée dans le rapport 320/1. La reproduction sexuée a été accompagnée d'une diminution significative de la fécondité potentielle. Bien que la reproduction sexuée de S. avenae soit avantageuse dans les régions où les hivers sont durs, parce que les oeufs sont résistants au froid, les lignées asexuées présentent un avantage considérable en ce qui concerne la fécondité potentielle pour l'augmentation de la population en automne et elles conservent de plus la capacité d'un accroissement numérique ultérieur si l'hiver est doux.

Aim To document the elevational pattern of epiphyte species richness at the local scale in the tropical Andes with a consistent methodology. Location The northern Bolivian Andes at 350–4000 m above sea level. Methods We surveyed epiphytic vascular plant assemblages in humid forests in (a) single trees located in (b) 90 subplots of 400 m2 each located in (c) 14 plots of 1 ha each. The plots were separated by 100–800 m along the elevational gradient. Results We recorded about 800 epiphyte species in total, with up to 83 species found on a single tree. Species richness peaked at c. 1500 m and declined by c. 65% to 350 m and by c. 99% to 4000 m, while forests on mountain ridges had richness values lowered by c. 30% relative to slope forests at the same elevations. The hump‐shaped richness pattern differed from a null‐model of random species distribution within a bounded domain (the mid‐domain effect) as well as from the pattern of mean annual precipitation by a shift of the diversity peak to lower elevations and by a more pronounced decline of species richness at higher elevations. With the exception of Araceae, which declined almost monotonically, all epiphyte taxa showed hump‐shaped curves, albeit with slightly differing shapes. Orchids and pteridophytes were the most species‐rich epiphytic taxa, but their relative contributions shifted with elevation from a predominance of orchids at low elevations to purely fern‐dominated epiphyte assemblages at 4000 m. Within the pteridophytes, the polygrammoid clade was conspicuously overrepresented in dry or cold environments. Orchids, various small groups (Cyclanthaceae, Ericaceae, Melastomataceae, etc.), and Bromeliaceae (below 1000 m) were mostly restricted to the forest canopy, while Araceae and Pteridophyta were well represented in the forest understorey. Main conclusions Our study confirms the hump‐shaped elevational pattern of vascular epiphyte richness, but the causes of this are still poorly understood. We hypothesize that the decline of richness at high elevations is a result of low temperatures, but the mechanism involved is unknown. The taxon‐specific patterns suggest that some taxa have a phylogenetically determined propensity for survival under extreme conditions (low temperatures, low humidity, and low light levels in the forest interior). The three spatial sampling scales show some different patterns, highlighting the influence of the sampling methodology.  相似文献

Fecundity and body size are central fitness-related traits, and their intra-specific responses to environmental variation are receiving increasing attention in the context of climate change. Recent results from Greenland indicate that temporal and spatial variation in body size differences between sexes (sexual size dimorphism) may be widespread among wolf spider species and could be related to climate. Here, we tested whether variation in elevation affected body size of three wolf spider (Araneae: Lycosidae) species in low-Arctic Canada, whether the sexes differed in their response to the cline, and whether changes in local density influenced this relationship. We also tested whether fecundity changed with elevation in two of the species, independent of body size variation. We found a significant sex–elevation interaction for Pardosa lapponica: female size decreased more in response to elevation than that of males. Males and females of Pardosa uintana decreased significantly in size with elevation at a similar rate. Alopecosa aculeata males increased in body size along the gradient while females did not. Pardosa lapponica females, but not P. uintana females, showed significant reduction in fecundity in response to elevation. P. uintana showed significant decreases in body size with increases in its population density. Changes in temperature and potential resource availability along the elevational gradient are probably causing these species- and sex-specific responses. Further summer warming of the region may alleviate current constraints on growth and reproduction of these species although sex-specific responses may affect their population dynamics.  相似文献
