A young Griffon vulture died with signs of convulsion, vomiting, tremor, seizures propulsions and lack of co-ordination. Toxicological analysis of the stomach content revealed the presence of methomyl (9.3 mg/kg), methomyloxime (6.7 mg/kg) and deltamethrin (6.1 mg/kg). Concentrations of methomyl and its intermediate methomyloxime, combined with results of other analysis, indicate methomyl as the cause of death of this bird.  相似文献

兀鹫(Gyps fulvus)隶属于隼形目(Falconiformes)鹰科(Accipitridae),被列入CITES附录Ⅱ,在国内几乎没有相应的研究。作者于2013年6月5日在西藏阿里地区改则县(33°6′52.2″N,85°39′9.18″E,海拔5 021 m)发现1只兀鹫。结合国内其他研究者的记录,此次发现增加了我们对兀鹫分布区的认识,表明了兀鹫在西藏的分布区可能被低估。根据以前研究者对兀鹫种群数量的估计值(100~300只)和平均群体大小(3只或4只或单只),以及本次的发现,我们认为兀鹫在新疆、西藏仍有未被发现的分布区,且在新疆、西藏的邻近省份可能存在其潜在分布区;此前兀鹫在西藏地区未有确切的观察记录或照片,本次记录可为西藏珍稀物种的保护提供依据。  相似文献

Intraspecific competitive behaviours were studied in a reintroduced population of Griffon Vultures Gyps fulvus in order to describe the pattern of competition between ages and sexes, assess the effect of reintroduction on competitive behaviour, and study the potential consequences of food management on competition. There was no evidence for a difference in feeding or display rates between age classes. However interaction rates, aggressiveness and dominance were higher in old adults than in the other age classes. No difference in the pattern of competition was found between sexes. There was no difference in the competitive ability (feeding rate and dominance) of reintroduced and wild-bred individuals. Feeding rates increased with resource availability. Group size also increased with food mass, but was lower than the theoretical maximum number of birds. This may be evidence of competition by interference where some individuals are able to increase their feeding rate by the exclusion of others. An increase in both the number of carcasses and the number of feeding sites is thus recommended to induce dispersal and reduce this competition.  相似文献

Griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus) population surveys were conducted during 1996–2002 in the island of Crete (Greece) to document population status and structure. Fieldwork was carried out during the breeding period when birds could be monitored in their colonies. Total population size was estimated at 379 individuals (range = 341–417) with adult birds comprising 63%. The breeding population was estimated at 141 pairs, which were distributed on an average in 23 colonies per year (range = 16–30) while the mean number of breeding pairs that laid eggs was 98 (range= 64–126). Crete thus supports the largest insular population of the species in the world and hosts 70–80% of the breeding population of the species in Greece. Population density was estimated at 6.9 individuals/100 km2, 2.6 breeding pairs/100 km2 and 1.8 nesting pairs/100 km2. The average home range of an occupied colony (i.e., breeding group) was estimated at ca. 204 km2 producing a theoretical foraging range of 8 km radius around the breeding cliff. No trends in the total number of individuals and breeding pairs appeared to exist, although significant differences in population size of individual colonies occurred between the years. The majority of the population was concentrated in small-sized colonies, which showed a low occupancy rate. The number of abandoned sites and the colonization of new ones could represent a shift of breeding pairs to alternative colonies provoked by local food abundance and conspesific attraction.  相似文献

The legal and illegal use of organophosphorus and carbamate pesticides represents one of many threats to birds. The activity of the cholinesterase enzyme in plasma is used as a non‐destructive biomarker to diagnose the exposure of birds to these pesticides. Scavengers are one of the most important bird groups threatened by the use of baits poisoned with anticholinesterase pesticides. Knowledge of the characteristics of this enzyme in each bird species is crucial, as several studies indicate that more than one cholinesterase form may be present in the plasma of birds. In this study, cholinesterase activity was characterized in the plasma of the Eurasian Griffon Vulture Gyps fulvus by using several substrates and inhibitors of the enzyme, and its normal activity value was also determined. The in vitro sensitivity of Gyps fulvus plasma cholinesterase to carbamate insecticides (aldicarb, carbaryl and methomyl) was also investigated. The results indicated that propionylthiocholine iodide was the preferred substrate to determine plasma cholinesterase activity, followed by acetylcholine iodide and S‐butyrylcholine iodide, and acetylcholinesterase was the predominant enzymatic activity in Gyps fulvus plasma. Aldicarb was the most potent in vitro inhibitor of plasma cholinesterase activity in this species. However, cholinesterase enzymatic activity was significantly inhibited by all tested carbamates, providing further evidence that this biomarker is a suitable tool to monitor the exposure to these poisons in the field, highlighting its utility in conservation programmes.  相似文献

The existence of Campylobacter and Salmonella reservoirs in wildlife is a potential hazard to animal and human health; however, the prevalence of these species is largely unknown. Until now, only a few studies have evaluated the presence of Campylobacter and Salmonella in wild griffon vultures and based on a small number of birds. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of Campylobacter and Salmonella in wild griffon vultures (n = 97) during the normal ringing programme at the Cinctorres Observatory in Eastern Spain. In addition, the effect of ages of individuals (juveniles, subadult and adult) on the presence were compared. Campylobacter was isolated from 1 of 97 (1.0%) griffon vultures and identified as C. jejuni. Salmonella was isolated from 51 of 97 (52.6%) griffon vultures. No significant differences were found between the ages of individuals for the presence of Salmonella. Serotyping revealed 6 different serovars among two Salmonella enterica subspecies; S. enterica subsp. enterica (n = 49, 96.1%) and S. enterica subsp. salamae (n = 2, 3.9%). No more than one serovar was isolated per individual. The serovars isolated were S. Typhimurium (n = 42, 82.3%), S. Rissen (n = 4, 7.8%), S. Senftenberg (n = 3, 5.9%) and S. 4,12:b[-] (n = 2, 3.9%). Our results imply that wild griffon vultures are a risk factor for Salmonella transmission, but do not seem to be a reservoir for Campylobacter. We therefore rule out vultures as a risk factor for human campylobacteriosis. Nevertheless, further studies should be undertaken in other countries to confirm these results.  相似文献

Japanese goshawk was classified as a vulnerable species in the Red Data Book. There have been possibilities of a decrease of genetic diversity accompanied by habitat loss and genetic pollution due to hybridization with escaping imported goshawks. In this paper, genetic diversity, gene flow and conservation of Northern Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) in Japan are discussed and compared with that in Central Asia. We used 11 newly developed microsatellite markers and also adopted six previously published markers. Genetic diversity was shown to be maintained with 0.58 as mean heterozygosity and 3.95 as mean allelic richness. The degree of genetic differentiation across all populations was low (Nei’s genetic differentiation index = 0.036, Wright’s genetic differentiation index = 0.039), possibly due to gene flow via adjacent regions (average number of migrants = 4.26; 0.68–20.30). However, it is possible that slight differentiation resulted from the short divergence time and/or inflow of escaping imported individuals. We recommend that goshawks in eastern Japan should be managed as a single unit. They do not appear to be under threat genetically at present, but there is the potential for rapid loss of genetic diversity. For future conservation, investigations of dispersal routes and actual conditions of gene flow are also recommended. To prevent further inflow of escaping goshawks into natural populations, it is desirable to reduce importation of goshawks and to enact a regulation obliging purchasers to register imported goshawks. Rare plant species are often restricted to small and/or isolated populations that can have reduced reproductive output and adaptive potential, resulting in an increased probability of extinction. Nevertheless, evolutionary changes might occur in such populations that increase their likelihood of persisting. In Australia, many threatened species from the ecologically important genus Grevillea (Proteaceae) are found in disjunct populations and these often display varied modes of reproduction from sexual to exclusively clonal. Here we use microsatellite markers to show that isolated populations across the entire range of G. repens have developed diverse patterns of genetic variation. The largest population has a relatively low level of genetic variation, one small population displays inbreeding, two populations show evidence of clonal reproduction and two contain both triploids and diploids. The global estimate of F ST was moderately high (0.272) suggesting limited gene flow between populations and historical isolation. These findings indicate that the genetically distinct G. repens populations exhibit very different patterns of genetic variation and we propose that the development of clonality and polyploidy in small or isolated populations may allow persistence but also reduces the effective size of the sexual population. Grevillea repens populations from its eastern and western/western central centres of distribution should be viewed as separate units for conservation management.  相似文献

Capsule: The movements and spatial ecology of non-breeding Eurasian Griffon Vultures Gyps fulvus in northern Italy, Croatia and Austria do not seem to be affected by feeding station use.

Aims: The purpose of this study was to assess how the creation of a feeding station at the Riserva Naturale Regionale del Lago di Cornino (Forgaria nel Friuli, northeast Italy) during the 1980s might have affected the spatial and behavioural ecology of the Eurasian Griffon Vulture.

Methods: Using global positioning system (GPS) satellite tracking, we studied movements of nine non-breeding Eurasian Griffon Vultures within the Riserva Naturale Regionale del Lago di Cornino in Italy, the Hohe Tauern in Austria and the Kvarner Gulf in Croatia.

Results: Both the average foraging range size and the time spent by the birds in Italy were comparable to those recorded in Croatia and Austria, where the vultures depend on unpredictable food resources. A significant difference in terms of foraging range size was recorded among seasons. In winter it seems to be smaller as a consequence of reduced movements performed by the individuals due to harsh climate conditions.

Conclusions: Our results suggest that the creation of a feeding station in Forgaria does not seem to have affected the spatial ecology of the Eurasian Griffon Vulture. However, due to the limited sample size and the young age of the individuals monitored, which have a long dispersal period, the findings presented should be considered as preliminary. Further research needs to be implemented to inform decisions regarding the management of supplementary feeding stations to promote the recovery and conservation of scavenger species, particularly in areas in which they have declined massively.  相似文献

Since the early 1990s, large and rapid population declines of three species of vulture ( Gyps spp.) endemic to south Asia have occurred on the Indian subcontinent and have led to these species being listed by IUCN as critically endangered. Evidence of rates of population decline, cause of death and toxicity is consistent with these declines being caused by poisoning of vultures through the ingestion of tissues from livestock treated with the anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac. In this paper, analysis of repeated surveys in and near protected areas widely spread across India shows that populations of two other vulture species, Egyptian vulture Neophron percnopterus and red-headed vulture Sarcogyps calvus , have also declined markedly and rapidly, but probably with a later onset than Gyps vultures in the same region. The declines continued at least up to 2003. It is recommended that these two species are considered for inclusion in the IUCN Red List and for urgent remedial conservation measures. Research is needed to determine whether or not the principal cause of these declines is diclofenac poisoning and to establish population trends in other scavenging birds in the Indian subcontinent.  相似文献

To obtain polymorphic molecular markers for population genetic and conservation studies in the Eurasian vulture Gyps fulvus populations, we screened a size‐selected partial genomic library enriched for microsatellites with dinucleotide motifs. A total of five polymorphic markers were obtained. The number of alleles ranged from two to nine and the observed and expected heterozygosity were very similar. These markers will be very useful for studying population structure and to evaluate conservation programmes.  相似文献

采用7 个多态微卫星DNA 标记分析了4 个高原鼠兔地理种群(海晏种群、西大滩东种群、西大滩西种群和昆仑山种群)的遗传多样性和遗传分化。采用多态信息含量(PIC)、期望杂合度(He )、观测杂合度(Ho)、基因流(Nm )和基因分化系数(Fst )对种群及物种的遗传多样性水平进行分析;计算各种群间的遗传距离(GD)、遗传相似度(GI)以及遗传距离与地理距离的相关系数,并进行UPGMA 聚类分析。研究结果显示,高原鼠兔的遗传多样性在小哺乳动物中处于较高水平, 其HeHo 的平均值分别为0. 5332 和0. 6003, 其Fst 为0. 0975,即有9. 75% 的变异存在于种群之间,即变异主要存在于种群内部。4 个种群间的杂合度与多态信息含量均无显著差异,说明它们的遗传多样性水平基本相当。海晏种群与其余3 个种群的遗传分化均达到了中度分化水平(Fst = 0.1043),而另3 个种群间几乎没有分化(Fst = 0. 0253)。Mantel test 结果表明地理距离与遗传距离间没有显著的相关性。  相似文献

Mycoplasmas have been isolated from birds of prey during clinical examinations, but their significance to the health of raptors is unclear. We report the isolation and characterization of four mycoplasmas found in the upper respiratory tract of four sick Eurasian Griffon (Gyps fulvus) that were housed in a Sicilian rehabilitation center at Ficuzza, near Palermo in Sicily, before reintroduction into the wild. These included Mycoplasma gallinarum, an unidentified mycoplasma highly similar to Mycoplasma glycophilum, and two unidentified mycoplasmas with similarities to Mycoplasma falconis and Mycoplasma gateae.  相似文献

Chinese pine (Pinus tabulaeformis carr.), endemic to China, is a conifer species with extensive and fragmented distribution in North China. In this study, the genetic diversity and structure of 20 natural populations of this species were investigated using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers. A total of 445 fragments were revealed with 8 pairs of primers, 379 (85.17%) of which were polymorphic. A moderate level of genetic diversity was detected at the species level (Shannon's information index I = 0.356, Nei's gene diversity HE = 0.271) and at the population level (I = 0.219, HE = 0.206). Most of genetic variation was within populations while a considerable level of genetic differentiation was detected (GST = 0.352, ФST = 0.304). The high differentiation could be attributed to the complex and fragmented habitats, and a limited gene flow among populations (Nm = 0.572). The Mantel test indicated that there was significant correlation (r = 0.455, P < 0.001) between Nei's genetic distance and geographical distance among all the populations. The results suggested that proper countermeasures should be taken to prevent the habitat further deterioration and maintain the genetic diversity of this species.  相似文献

Occupied and unoccupied sites of bearded vulture Gypaetus barbatus and Eurasian griffon Gyps fulvus were located in the Caucasus (mainly Georgia). Habitat variables related to nest-site characteristics, climate, terrain, human disturbance and food availability were used to construct predictive models of vulture breeding site selection by using a geographic information system (GIS), logistic regression and Bayesian statistical inference. The probability of bearded vulture occupancy of a cliff ledge that was safe from climatic adversity, human disturbance and predation was positively correlated with the following variables measured within a 20-km radius of the ledge: mean elevation, mean slope, the percentage of open areas, mean distance to roads, number of globally threatened wild goats Capra cylindricornis, C. caucasica and C. aegargus , and annual biomass of dead livestock. The probability of such a cliff ledge being occupied by Eurasian griffon was negatively correlated with annual rainfall at the ledge and positively correlated with the percentage of open areas and annual biomass of dead livestock within 20 km of the ledge. Provided that GIS coverage of the habitat variables is available, these models can be of help in various areas of the Caucasus and elsewhere to predict possible nest occurrence areas, and highlight sites where vultures may occur in the future if the population grows because of conservation or other activities.  相似文献

The first hypervariable fragment (HVI) of the mitochondrial DNA control region was sequenced in 90 individuals of the European roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) from the Alps, central Italy and Spain. Pooling these data with 70 published sequences from several European regions, we were able to identify patterns of divergence within the Italian peninsula, and in Europe in general. The results we obtained can be summarized as follows. First, the genetic structure of European roe deer populations is substantial (PhiST values around 0.6). Second, the divergence between some central Italian populations, the Alpine group (which is genetically close to the French, the Spanish and the Norwegian samples) and the Eastern European populations seems to reflect Upper Pleistocene subdivisions, possibly related to three southern European refugia. Third, a different group of central Italian individuals probably diverged more recently from the Alpine group, and their attribution to the subspecies C. c. italicus does not appear justified. Fourth, the analysis of mitochondrial DNA in the roe deer can be used to identify recently reintroduced animals in the western Alps which clearly cluster within the Eastern European group, thus providing an important tool for conservation and management strategies for this species.  相似文献

Cedrus libani of Lebanon is a valuable natural resource and the dominant species in its natural ecosystem. Intense and diverse anthropogenic pressures over historical times raised concerns about its genetic vigor and continued survival. Our investigation of the genetic diversity included samples from all remnant natural populations. Assessment of the genetic diversity using random amplified polymorphic DNA markers revealed the persistence of considerable variation distributed within populations with low population differentiation corroborated by Bayesian and analysis of molecular variance estimates (G ST = 0.07, Φ ST = 0.09). Individual assignment tests were carried out to investigate measures of gene flow. Inferences concluded that this natural heritage is not currently threatened by inbreeding or by random genetic drift. Correlation studies investigated possible effects of spatial distribution and environmental conditions on genetic structure. A climatic trend corresponding to a temperature–humidity gradient correlated significantly with the level of genetic diversity, while the edaphic variation did not.  相似文献

Halophila beccarii (Hydrocharitaceae), a small monoecious seagrass, has been listed as a threatened species. In this study, a total of 106 samples were collected from four Chinese populations located at the northern limit of its distribution range. Using six polymorphic microsatellites, we found low genetic variation in this species, in which the mean number of alleles per locus was 2.8, and 16 multi-locus genotypes were revealed. In the four populations, the mean number of alleles per locus ranged from 1.2 to 2, one to eight genotypes were found, and clonal diversity ranged from 0 to 0.23; observed and expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.17 to 0.40 and from 0.09 to 0.24, respectively. Strong genetic differentiation was found among the populations, and the standardized fixation index (FST) was 0.787. Species traits (i.e., clonal growth) and bottleneck effects due to drastic population fluctuation may contribute to the observed low genetic variation.  相似文献
