Volume 62, no. 4, p. 1391-1404: after publication of this article, it was brought to the attention of the authors that a more extensive treatment of the hydrodynamics of Mariager Fjord and the vertical distribution of bacteria and protozoa therein was published in a recent article by Fenchel et al. This work contains important information about the studied ecosystem, but unfortunately, the existence of this work was realized only after publication of our article. Hypogonadotropic hypogonadism in women

This article presents the role of the hypothalamus in reproduction, the definition of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (HH), and the causes of acquired and syndromic HH and idiopathic HH (IHH). The authors present a short review of major causes of acquired HH, but most of the causes of IHH will not be discussed because they do not fall within the scope of the article. More attention is devoted to idiopathic HH, especially the genetic basis of IHH. Also presented in the article are clinical criteria of CHARGE syndrome. Later, the article discusses the clinical presentation, establishing the diagnosis, and management of IHH. The article ends with a brief overview of nutritional hypothalamic dysfunction and athletic amenorrhea.

That column praised a magazine article in which a son explained why he and his family had helped their mother commit suicide in the face of a terminal illness. Dr. Balfour Mount says the article was misleading and offers no credible solutions to the issues surrounding palliative care.     

Alcoholism in Ghana—A socio-cultural exploration

A vast literature has accumulated in recent years, examining the disease concept of alcoholism, and analyzing the interaction of biomedicine with indigenous healing systems in colonial and post-colonial societies. Social scientists have consistently emphasized the social context of alcoholism, although their works have been largely ignored. This article engages the literature on the social history of medicine in Africa, and works on alcohol use in non-Western societies, in an attempt to offer an understanding of alcoholism in Ghana rooted in Ghanaian cultures and history. It explores how alcohol's established ties with spirituality influences Ghanaian perceptions of alcoholism. Based on interviews, highlife music, popular literature, and the few written works on alcohol use in Ghana, the article examines the social construction of the alcoholic in independent Ghana.Research for this article was made possible by a 1991–92 research grant from the African Development Foundation. An earlier version of this article was presented at a seminar organized by the Social Medicine Department, Harvard Medical School, April 1994. Understanding Sign Language Bibles through Affective Audits in South India

This article analyses the role that the emic category of understanding plays in creating new forms of personhood and new worlds for sign language using deaf people in south India. As an ethnographic study of the production, dissemination, and circulation of Indian Sign Language Bible DVDs by an international non-denominational Christian missionary organization, this article analyses how the power of sign language as heart language lies in the potentiality of becoming a fluent signer and a member of a deaf sociality. Bringing the Anthropology of Christianity in conversation with the Anthropology of deafness/sign language studies, this article argues that anthropologists have ignored practices of verifying understanding in our interlocutors. In utilizing the concept of affective audits, this article analyses the practices by which understanding comes to take place. In addition, this article also argues that anthropologists must attend to how research on sensory formations might be presuming a ‘normal’ sensing body.
