We performed histological studies on trophic and reproductive systems of colonial interna in Sacculina polygenea, a parasite of the coastal crab Hemigrapsus sanguineus. The trophic system that performs functions of absorption, accumulation, and transportation of nutrients from the hemolymph of the host comprises the trophic epithelium of distal canals and transporting trunks. The reproductive system of interna consist of nuclei (early stages of development of the primordia of externae) and the primordia of externae in later stages of development. It has been shown that during morphogenesis of the nucleus two primordia arise, a primordium of the externa itself and a primordium of its trophic system. In the primordium of the ovary, we found oogonia; early oocytes and vitellogenic oocytes were found in the ovaries of the late primordia of the externae. The damaging effects of the interna on the ovaries and testes of the crab host are discussed. Thus, we have found numerous elements of reproductive and trophic systems in the colonial interna of S. polygenea. The term individual is proposed to be used for the externa in rhizocephalan barnacles with its trophic system.  相似文献

We carried out an in vitro histological and TEM investigation of the organization of the interna of Peltogasterella gracilis(Crustacea: Rhizocephala), a parasite of the hermit crab. The colonial interna of P. gracilisincludes a reproductive system with multiple nuclei (externa rudiments) and a trophic system of absorbing lampbrush and transportation canals. The nucleus forms a cluster of embryonic stem cells. In the distal parts of the trophic system, there are cells that function in the absorption, processing, and storage of trophic substances. Cells filled with trophic resources disintegrate (evidently by apoptosis), releasing trophic substances and cell remnants into the canal cavity formed through this process. The parasitic phase of the P. gracilislife cycle is characterized by the loss of the basic morphological features and complete pattern of organization of the arthropods and by chaos and fractalization in the interna.  相似文献

The specific features of the reproductive stage of the life cycle have been studied in the rhizocephalan barnacle Polyascus polygenea, a parasite of the coastal crab Hemigrapsus sanguineus. It is shown that a single crab can bear 1 to 8 externae of P. polygenea. The fecundity of the parasite depends on the size of the externae and their number on the host and may reach as much as 50000 eggs for one externa. In Peter the Great Bay, Sea of Japan, this species repeatedly reproduces during the entire spring–autumn period; externae with developing embryos in the mantle cavity occur from May to September, and planktonic larvae occur from June to October. One externa produces during the season of reproduction no less than three generations of larvae. Thus, the reproductive strategy in P. polygenea comprises a three-stage cascade of reproduction: asexual reproduction via budding of the interna; the development of several generations of one or several externae; and several reproduction cycles of each externa. This allows the parasite to produce a very great number of larvae and ensures the parasitization of a significant proportion of the host crab population. The structure of the ovaries and oogenesis in rhizocephalans and free-living cirripede barnacles have many common features, which provides evidence for integration of these two groups within one monophyletic taxon.  相似文献

Larval development of the rhizocephalanSacculina polygenea (Crustacea: Cirripedia: Rhizocephala) parasitizing the coastal crabHemigrapsus sanguineus was studied in Vostok Bay, the Sea of Japan. At 22–23°C, the entire cycle of larval development takes 2.5 days and includes five naupliar stages and one cypris stage. Like other rhizocephalans, the larvae ofS. polygenea are lecithotrophic and only grow slightly in size in the course of development, and like all sacculinids, they have no flotation collar. The naupliar stages IV and V have a tubercle between the furcal rami; this tubercle is absent in the larvae of the genusPeltogasterella, but it has been described inS. carcini. The first seta of the antennule only disappears completely at the fourth stage, although it is markedly reduced at the third stage. No morphological differences, except differences in size, are found between male and female nauplii.  相似文献

Summary

Responses of larvae of two rhizocephalan species to changes in seawater temperature and salinity were studied under laboratory conditions. Peltogasterella gracilis parasitizes the hermit crab Pagurus pectinatus, which occurs at stable salinity and gradually changing temperature in summer. Sacculina polygenea is a parasite of the crab Hemigrapsus sanguineus, which lives in the intertidal zone in summer where salinity and temperature can fluctuate during the day. The development of both species is comprised of five naupliar stages and the cyprid stage, and it was considered successful if more than 50% of the nauplii attained the cyprid stage. P. gracilis nauplii successfully developed at 12–20°C and 30–34‰, but at 22°C successful development occurred in a narrower salinity range (32–34‰). All nauplii died both at 25°C and in 26‰. S. polygenea nauplii successfully reached the cyprid stage at higher temperatures (18–25°C) and a wider salinity range (18–34‰) than P. gracilis nauplii, but at 12°C and 16‰ larval development of S. polygenea was suppressed. Under favorable conditions, naupliar development lasted 3.5 days in P. gracilis and 2–3 days in S. polygenea. The cyprids of both rhizocephalan species demonstrated a greater resistance to temperature and salinity changes than nauplii. However, P. gracilis cyprids were active in a narrower salinity range (16–34‰), as compared to S. polygenea cyprids (8–34‰). Under favorable conditions the cyprids of both species survived for 6 to 10 days.  相似文献

Original and literature data supporting the evolutionary conservation of the morphofunctional organization of totipotent cells of germ and stem lineages in metazoan animals are reviewed. We studied stem cells of the colonial rhizocephalans, Peltogasterella gracilis, Polyascus polygenea and Thylacoplethus isaevae, the turbellarian Dugesia tigrina, the colonial hydroid Obelia longissima, and cultured embryonic stem cells of mouse. The typical germinal granules of germ plasm, selective expression of the activity of alkaline phosphatase and of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), which are known as markers of stem and primary germ cells of vertebrates, and the specific expression of the protein product of the vasa gene in cells of rhizocephalans, which is a marker of cells of germ and stem lineages of various metazoans, specified the stem cells of invertebrates of such different taxa. The self-renewing pool of totipotent stem cells is the cellular basis of the reproductive strategy, including sexual and asexual reproduction; such cells share morphofunctional features of embryonic stem and germline cells of Metazoa.  相似文献

The circulatory systems of four polystyelids, Botryllus schlosseri, B. primigenus, Botrylloides violaceus and Symplegma reptans, were compared. The palleal buds are connected to the parent zooid by a peduncle and to the colonial vascular system by connecting vessels. The peduncle of S. reptans disappears at an earlier stage of bud development than in B. primigenus; it survives the dissolution of the parent zooid in B. schlosseri and B. violaceus. The connecting vessel is formed by anastomosis between an epidermal outgrowth from the bud and a neighboring colonial vessel, and is characterized by the presence of a sphincter. The number of connecting vessels formed in a palleal bud is three in S. reptans, two in B. primigenus and one each in B. schlosseri and B. violaceus. In each species, the larva has eight rudiments of ampullae. In B. primigenus, the original ampullae degenerate soon after metamorphosis and new ampullae extend from the ventral epidermis of the oozooid. In the other species, the colonial vascular system is derived from the original ampullae. The whole colonial vascular system contracts and expands periodically, with regionally different phases. During each expansion cycle, the sphincter contracts once in B. primigenus and twice in S. reptans. The correlation may be due to blood pressure and the propagation of excitation through the colonial vascular system.  相似文献

Published and original data indicating evolutionary conservation of the morphofunctional organization of reserve stem cells providing for asexual and sexual reproduction of invertebrates are reviewed. Stem cells were studied in representatives of five animal types: archeocytes in sponge Oscarella malakhovi (Porifera), large interstitial cells in colonial hydroid Obelia longissima (Cnidaria), neoblasts in an asexual race of planarian Girardia tigrina (Platyhelmintes), stem cells in colonial rhizocephalans Peltogasterella gracilis, Polyascus polygenea, and Thylacoplethus isaevae (Arthropoda), and colonial ascidian Botryllus tuberatus (Chordata). Stem cells in animals of such diverse taxa feature the presence of germinal granules, are positive for proliferating cell nuclear antigen, demonstrate alkaline phosphatase activity (a marker of embryonic stem cells and primary germ cells in vertebrates), and rhizocephalan stem cells express the vasa-like gene (such genes are expressed in germline cells of different metazoans). The self-renewing pool of stem cells is the cellular basis of the reproductive strategy including sexual and asexual reproduction.  相似文献

Development in dioecious cultivated spinach, Spinacia oleracea, is distinguished by the absence of alternative reproductive organ primordia in male and female flowers. Given the highly derived floral developmental program in spinach, we wished to characterize a spinach C class floral identity gene and to determine the patterns of sequence evolution as well as compare the spatial and temporal expression patterns with those of AGAMOUS. The isolated cDNA sequence clusters phylogenetically within the AGAMOUS/FARINELLI C class clade. In comparison with the SLM1 sequence from the related Silene latifolia, amino acid replacements are highly conservative and non-randomly distributed, being predominantly found in hinge regions or on exposed surfaces of helices. The spinach gene (SpAGAMOUS) appears to be exclusively expressed in reproductive tissues and not in vegetative organs. Initial expression of SpAGAMOUS is similar in male and female floral primordia. However, upon initiation of the first whorl organs, SpAGAMOUS becomes restricted to meristemic regions from which the reproductive primordia will develop. This results in an early gender-specific pattern. Thus, the spinach C class gene is differentially expressed prior to reproductive organ development and is, at least, correlated with, if not directly involved in, the sexual dimorphism in spinach.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available for this article at  相似文献

The genus Sellaphora has become a model system for studies of the species concept, speciation and automated identification in diatoms. Three species, S. pupula, S. bacillum and S. laevissima, have proved to be complexes containing several or many species, which are difficult to distinguish morphologically but which are genetically differentiated and (where tested) reproductively isolated. Until now, however, there has been little information about the ecology of the species within this complex, except in relation to parasite sensitivity. In order to test whether semi- and pseudo-cryptic Sellaphora species are ecologically differentiated with respect to trophic status, we used tools recently developed in the UK in response to the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD). Diatom samples from three substrata (plants, rocks, sediment) were taken from 22 lakes in Scotland and England, covering a gradient from oligotrophic mountain lakes to eutrophic lowland ponds. The epilithic and epiphytic diatom assemblages were used to evaluate lake trophic status according to the UK WFD assessment system and showed that there was a strong environmental gradient in the dataset. Sellaphora species occurred in the sediment-derived epipelon and their distributions were analysed in relation to the trophic gradient. A total of 28 Sellaphora phenodemes (putative species) were found, and some of them differed in their environmental demands. Two groups were distinguished: (1) a group indicating rather oligotrophic conditions and containing several demes with linear valves and subcapitate or capitate poles (referred to here as S. [pupula] cap-A, cap-B and cap-C and (2) a group occurring in eutrophic lakes and containing the recently described species S. blackfordensis, S. capitata and S. obesa, as well as S. [pupula] Φ ‘small lanceolate’. “Androecium” ofSicyos angulatus andSechium edule is unique in having a solid central column below a head portion with thecae. Its morphogenesis was examined for the two species. The developmental course is composed of two distinct successive phases; (1) establishment of stamen primordia and (2) uplift of the stamen primordia caused by development of a central column below them. In the first phase, there is a difference between the two species; inSicyos angulatus, two bithecal and one monothecal stamen primordia are formed by congenital fusion among preformed five protrsions, whilst inSechium edule, three or four monothecal stamen primordia are formed without fusion. The central column is later produced by intercalary growth in a region below the stamen primordia in both species. Concomitant with central column development, the center of the floral primordium, which was surrounded by the early formed stamen primordia, is raised up to the top of the central column. The central column could be interpreted as a receptacular column, and not as congenitally fused stamen filaments, as currently believed. The “androecium” of the both species is considered an androecium complex, which consists of the stamens and a receptacular column.  相似文献

The identification of interspecific links (trophic niche) is important to characterize resource use of a predator, and to know its trophic role (for example, mesopredator or top predator) in the food web. In this study, we examined: a) the trophic ecology of Scomberomorus sierra as a predator (niche breadth, trophic overlap, and trophic position) and b) its presence as a prey in the diets of the region´s top predators, to evaluate the critical link of S. sierra as a probable mesopredator in the food web of the southeastern Gulf of California (GC). Based on %PSIRI, the dominant diet of S. sierra were engraulids and cephalopods. The diet was similar between sexes and among size-classes. However, the isotopic niche breadth values and δ15N variance (>1) reflect a broad niche for young adults likely related to a) changes in morphology (e.g., size of the mouth), b) development of the visual system, and c) changes in the energy requirements of the species reproductive stages. Seasonal changes in prey species’ availability and abundance resulted in isotopic variations, indicating that S. sierra is an opportunistic predator. A wide range in trophic position value (from 3.8 to 4.2) indicated that it also is an intermediary carnivore, with a high degree of trophic plasticity. Although S. sierra has not a dominant role in top predators’ diets, they share some prey species such as anchovies and other fish, depending on predator size. Therefore, S. sierra is a species with many prey-predator relationships in the southeastern GC food webs that may be considered a critical trophic link. This information is crucial for an ecosystem-based fisheries management in the Gulf of California.  相似文献

Synopsis Changes in serum steroid hormones were studied during the reproductive cycle of two viviparous rockfishes of the genusSebastes. During the annual reproductive cycle of femaleS. taczanowskii, serum levels of estradiol-17β (E2) gradually increased from their lowest in August to maximal levels towards the end of vitellogenesis in February, and rapidly returned to low levels in pregnant females in April and May. Serum progesterone (prog) fluctuated at low levels throughout the annual reproductive cycle, while 17α, 20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17α, 20β-diOHprog) levels were high during gestation in May. Serum levels of these steroids were also measured in femaleS. schlegeli at weekly intervals during late vitellogenesis, gestation and post-parturition. In pregnant females, E2 was high during vitellogenesis, then decreased and remained low throughout gestation. The 17α, 20β-diOHprog levels were low during vitellogenesis, then rapidly increased and remained high during gestation. On the other hand, prog values remained low, with temporal peaks coinciding with the peak of 17α, 20β-diOHprog during gestation. Based on these results and the literature, it is suggested that E2 is the most important steroid involved in vitellogenesis and that 17α, 20β-diOHprog may play an important role in final oocyte maturation and subsequent gestation.  相似文献

In colonial modular organisms, differences in module size and colony growth patterns among species have the potential to impose varying constraints on reproductive investment. Here, we compare reproductive output among seven morphologically different species of spawning reef corals, and analyse the relationship between reproductive output and module (polyp) size. Reproductive output ranged between 132 and 384 J cm–2, with lipid constituting the key indicator of energy investment. Lipid decreased by 85–100%, whereas protein and carbohydrate were relatively invariant between pre- and post-spawning tissues in all species, representing 1–15% and <1%, respectively, of the energy investment to reproductive output. The ratio of energy content in reproductive to somatic tissues (gonadosomatic index, GSI) varied among species from 0.20 (Symphyllia recta) to 1.31 (Acropora tenuis), the latter being the highest value reported for any iteroparous marine invertebrate. Surprisingly, small-polyped species (Acropora, Montipora) had 2- to 6-fold higher GSIs than large-polyped ones (Lobophyllia, Symphyllia). Energy equivalents of tissues increased with the 1.50–1.76 power of polyp diameter for somatic tissues and with the 1.42–1.80 power of polyp diameter for reproductive output. In both cases, increases in energy equivalents with polyp diameter were less than the scaling exponent of 3 predicted for an isometric relationship between tissue volume (or mass) and polyp diameter, indicating significant constraints of space, design or physiological energetics with increasing polyp size. We hypothesise that such constraints have played a key role in the evolution of modularity in cnidarians.  相似文献

We evaluate trophic interactions between the rotifer Asplanchna priodonta and the plankton community of Lake Windsborn (Eifel District, Germany). The long-term population dynamics of this species and of the two most abundant zooplankton species, Keratella cochlearis and Bosmina longirostris, were analyzed in relation to hydrochemical and climatic variates. The maximum abundance of A. priodonta was limited to the summer months with temperature being the only significant predictor of abundance. Intrinsic rate of growth and abundance of the three species were independent from each other suggesting the absence of trophic interactions. In Lake Windsborn, A. priodonta was a grazer rather than a predator. Its diet included high proportions of colonial algae and cyanobacteria which cannot be ingested by the other abundant zooplankton species, whereas zooplanktonic food were rarely found. Thus, our study supports the hypothesis that A. priodonta is an opportunistic feeder whose trophic position entirely depends on the structure of the plankton community.  相似文献

The decrease in rateof development with increasing number of primordia may be dueto depletion of mother tuber resources. The transition of theapex from a vegetative to a reproductive state was not the factorlimiting the initiation of additional leaf primordia. We studied the trophic development of the past 30–100 years in eight moderately deep Dutch lakes based on their sedimentary fossil diatom assemblages. The dominant diatoms indicating meso- to eutrophic conditions were Aulacoseira subarctica, Cyclotella ocellata, C. cyclopuncta, C. meneghiniana, Puncticulata bodanica, Aulacoseira granulata, Cyclostephanos dubius, C. invisitatus, Stephanodiscus hantzschii, S. medius, and S. parvus. Ordination of diatom data separated the lakes into four groups according to their total phosphorus concentrations (TP), water supply, water management, and origin. The first group consists of dike-breach lakes, which were in stable eutrophic to hypertrophic conditions throughout the past century with diatom-inferred TP (DI-TP) concentrations of between 70 and 300 μg l−1. The main factors influencing these dike-breach lakes are river management, ground water supply of riverine origin, and local land use. The second group are artificial lakes of fluctuating oligo- to mesotrophic conditions and DI-TP concentrations of 10–30 μg l−1. Only one of the artificial lakes showed a DI-TP increase due to changes in catchment agricultural practice. A third group includes an artificial moat and an inland dike-breach lake with DI-TP concentrations of 50–100 μg l−1. The fourth group contains an individual dike-breach lake with stable mesotrophic conditions of 50 μg l−1 throughout the past century. Rather than showing a regional pattern, the studied lakes behave very individualistically with regard to their trophic history, reflecting changes in the local hydrology and in their nutrient sources.  相似文献

Two new species of the rare nematode family Creagrocercidae from earthworms are described and illustrated. Creagrocercus braziliensis n. sp. is distinguished from the type-species, C. barbatus Baylis, 1943, by: the presence of four cephalic papillae (vs a pair of finger-shaped latero-ventral processes) on the head; larger amphids; a more posterior excretory pore position; a shorter pharynx which is remarkably expanded at the base; the nerve-ring situated just posterior to the base of the pharynx (vs at mid-pharyngeal level); an anal aperture present in the females; anterior ovary and testis reach just into the anterior half of the body (vs closely posterior to the pharynx); equal, similar (vs unequal, dissimilar) spicules; and a prominent, unpaired precloacal papilla in males. Creagrocercus drawidae n. sp. is related to C. barbatus by a similar pharyngeal shape and the presence of a tail ‘hook’, and to C. braziliensis n. sp. by: the lack of finger-shaped processes on the head and the presence of four cephalic papillae; a similar position of the excretory pore; a similar arrangement and length of the reproductive system; the presence of unpaired precloacal papilla in males; similar, almost equal spicules; and the presence of a tail ‘hook’. From both of these species C. drawidae differs by having: a much shorter body and pharynx; larger amphids; a more posterior nerve-ring position; larger and less numerous eggs; greatly inflated (vs flat) vulval lips; shorter spicules; and a smaller caudal ‘hook’. For C. drawidae, the partial sequences of the SSU (18S) rDNA and the D2D3 segment of LSU (28S) rDNA were obtained and subjected to phylogenetic analyses. The phylogenetic affiliations of the Creagrocercidae are discussed.  相似文献

The structure and the ontogenetic process of the reproductive shoot apex forming a terminal inflorescence ofClethra barbinervis were examined, especially concerning the superficial view of the apex. The system of contact parastichies is 2+3 in phyllotaxis in the vegetative phase, changing to 5+8 for bract arrangement in the reproductive phase. At the same time the size of the apex is conspicuously enlarged. The size of the foliage leaf primordia in the vegetative phase is larger than that of the bract primordia in the reproductive phase. The radial cell files, which are clear in the vegetative shoot apex, are not recognizable at least in the early stage of the reproductive phase. The author proposes a close correlation between the appearance of the radial cell files, as well as the construction of the apical sectors, and the sizes of the shoot apex and leaf primordia. It may be proposed also that the construction of the apical sectors is closely correlated with the phyllotaxis.  相似文献

Fast-growing willows are cultivated as coppice in short rotation biomass plantations. The production and sustainability of the system is based on the ability of trees to resprout after repeated harvesting. The large variation in coppicing ability is due to plant genotypic differences in structure and physiology as well as environmental factors. Morphological and structural prerequisites for resprouting were compared in two shrubby willows with high coppicing ability, S. viminalis and S. eriocephala, and one tree-formed species, S. amygdaloides, with low coppicing ability. The initiation and development of buds and the resprouting pattern of coppiced stools were compared. All buds were axillary in origin and showed the same principal structure consisting of one main shoot primordium and two lateral primordia. In S. viminalis and S. eriocephala the lateral buds contained several leaf primordia and sprouted shortly after the main bud. In S. amygdaloides further development of lateral buds was inhibited after formation of two budscales, and leaf primordia were not formed until the buds were forced to sprout. The number of sprouts developing after coppicing were correlated to the structure and number of buds and their position on the stools. Self-thinning rate was high and many shoots originating from lateral buds died. Most buds were located above ground on the remaining basal portions of harvested stems. No adventitious buds were found on the stools. Significantly different bud differentiation pattern and frequent sylleptic sprouting resulted in lower coppice response in S. amygdaloides compared to S. viminalis and S. eriocephala.  相似文献
