Analyses of calcium content of molluscs collected from 53 freshwaterhabitats on a naturally occurring calcium gradient between theCanadian Shield and limestone formations in southern Ontarioshowed both intraspecific and interspecific variations in relationto pH, total alkalinity, total hardness and calcium hardnessof the water. The calcium content of individuals is relatedto the calcium concentration of the water for only about halfof the species analysed. Two species (Sphaerium rhomboideumand Sphaerium simile) showed negative correlations, while six(Cincinnatia cincinnatiensis, Pisidium casertanum, Pisidiumcompressum, Sphaerium striatinum, Anodonta grandis grandis,and Elliptio complanata showed positive correlations beteencalcium content of individuals and environmental calcium content.In general, species associated with the sediments (e.g. bivalves)showed better calcium concentrations than did species associatedwith macrophytes (e.g. gastropods).   1. A method has been developed to measure the hydraulic conductivityof the wall of the internodal cell of Nitella flexilis.
  2. Therate of water penetration through the cell wall varies linearlywith the hydrostatic pressure difference between the two sidesof the wall, showing that water permeability of the cell wallremains independent of the pressure difference applied.
  3. Waterpermeability of the cell wall is inversely proportionalto itsthickness It is 30µµmin–3{dot}atm–3when the thickness of the wall is 10 µ.
  4. Water permeabilityof the cell wall is the same for inward andoutward water flow.The polar water permeability of the entiremembrane system (walland protoplasmic part) of the living celldemonstrated by KAMIYAand TAZAWA (1) is, therefore, due tothe living protoplasmicpart.
  5. The ratio of the inward to outward permeability constantsofthe protoplasmic layer alone is higher than that of the entiremembrane system composed of protoplasmic layer and cell wall.

The abundance, life span, growth and production of the mud snailsHydrobia minoricensis, H. ulvae and H. ventrosa in a semi-naturallagoon system were studied by taking monthly samples at threesites during 1991 and 1992. The most abundant species, H. minoricensisoccurred at mean densities of 12834 to 26264 snails m–2(10.7 to 25.8g dry weigh m–2), depending on the site.The least abundant species, H. ulvae, occurred at mean densitiesof 185 to 353 snails m–2 (3.2 to 2.2g dry weight m–2).The numerical abundance and biomass of the three Hydrobia specieswere positively related to the biomass of benthic macroalgae(P<0.01). Although H. ulvae egg capsules were recorded throughoutthe year, newly hatched snailsof this species were not observed,in contrast to the other two species. The early spring and summercohorts of H. minoricensis and H. ventrosa seemed to be themost numerous. The average life spans of these two species wereestimated to be about 18 and 13 months respectively. Annualproduction estimates for the whole lagoon system were 29.0 (6.3),5.5 (0.8) and 5.2 (1.0)g dry weight (ash-free dry weight) m–2yr–1 for H. minoricensis, H. ulvae and H. ventrosa respectively.The annual P/B ratio was about 2 for H. minoricensis and H.ventrosa. Surfacing and water-leaving behaviour (quitting) of aquaticpulmonate snails was investigated in the laboratory. Regressioncoefficients of surfacing rate per hour for 16 snails in 200cm3 of water were 1.28 for L. peregra, 1.35 for B. glabrata(albino form), 0.47 for B. glabrata (pigmented form) and 0.17for B. jousseaumei. Disturbance, snail size and conditioningof the water were relatively unimportant factors; water volumeadjusted by depth was also unimportant up to 50 mm depth. Importantfactors controlling surfacing appeared to be population density,time of year, temperature, water volume adjusted by perimeterand dissolved oxygen concentration. The response to the latterwas not clear and both B. glabrata and L. peregra orientatedalmost as well to a nitrogen/water interface as to an air/waterinterface. Water-quitting regressed on volume, which had beenadjusted by perimeter variation, revealed a curvilinear relationshipfor B. glabrata, with maximum quitting at 1 snail per 7cm3 (1snail per 14cm of climbable perimeter). L. peregra showed anegative exponential curve, with maximum quitting at 1 snailper 3 cm3 of water (1 snail per 8 cm of climbable perimeter).These data could be relevant to design and management of irrigationchannels where bilharzia might occur. Populations of Sphaerium corneum (L.) and Pisidium spp. weresampled monthly for 13 months, at 11 sites with a wide rangeof water chemistry in N.W. England. Both genera showed almostyear-round reproduction, but the periods of maximum productionshowed between-population variation. S. corneum adults containedspat at different stages of development and spat size was relatedto number in the brood. Multiple regression analysis with 16water physicochemical variables showed the following to be highlysignificant factors (P<0.01) in the distribution of the molluses(factors in order of importance):- S. corneum: HCO3, K$, Cl, Mg2$, temperature, Ca2$, month; Pisidium spp: PO43–, Mg2$, mud, oxygen, temperature, month. Shells from 14 populations of sphaeriid clams including Sphaeriumstriatinum, S. simile, Pisidium walkeri, Musculim partumeiumand M. iransversum were analyzed for organic carbon (µgCmg–1 shell), nitrogen (µg,N mg–1 shell) andCaCOs (%CaCO3 of total clam dry weight). Habitat waters wereassessed for total hardness (expressed as ppm CaCo3), ppm Ca,ppm Mg, conductivity (µmho) and suspended organic Carbon(µgCl–1). For all populations, shell organic C andN are positively correlated and there is an inverse relationshipbetween the amounts of shell CaCO3 and shell organic carbon.Trophic considerations give the best correlation with shelltype at the generic level of consideration since species ofMusculium are found at the opposite end of the trophic scale(eutrophic) from all other populations studied. For S. striatinum,the most extensively studied species, the amount of shell CaCO3is inversely related to water hardness.   1. Daily and seasonal variations occur in the water content ofHelix aspersa Müller.
  2. The water content is not constantthroughout 24 hours but fluctuatesby 2 to 10%. There is noapparent daily rhythm.
  3. Humidity has an effect on the watercontent. Falls in relativehumidity to 60% or less, triggera decrease of the snails' hydration,over a range of temperatures,as well as a brief pause in activity.
  4. Only external climaticconditions produce noticeable fluctuationsof water content,and they more particularly affect juvenileswhich undergo greaterevaporo-transpiration.

The methods of quantitative analysis of b-type haem in plantswere investigated. With an improved method developed was determinedthe haem content in the supernatant, mitochondrial, and microsomalfractions of sweet potato tissue. The activities of peroxidase,catalase, and cytochrome oxidase, as well as the contents ofb-type haem and acid-insoluble nitrogen in the cellular fractionswere determined at different incubation times after cuttingof sweet potato tissue. Peroxidase and catalase increased withtime in each celluler fraction, following a short lag phase.In the mitochondrial fraction, b-type haem, cytochrome oxidase,and acid insoluble nitrogen increased linearly with time. Inthe microsomal and supernatant fraction, b-type haem increasedwith time following a short lag phase. The increase in haemcontent of the supernatant fraction appeared to be associatedwith peroxidase formation. Time course analysis showed that 59Fe-incorporation into b-typehaem of the supernatant fraction increased with time and thatincorporation was markedly inhibited by blasticidin S. The incorporationof 59Fe into mitochondrial haem did not increase with time andwas not inhibited by blasticidin S. Blasticidin S inhibited59Fe-incorporation into microsomal haem. 准噶尔荒漠分布的早春短命植物不仅具有十分独特的生物学特点,而且在荒漠植物群落演替、物种多样性维持及土壤改良与防治水土流失等方面具有重要的生态学价值。该文运用Li-6400开放式气体交换光合作用测定系统,对分布于准噶尔荒漠的16种早春短命植物生长盛期的净光合速率(Pn)、蒸腾速率(Tr)、水分利用效率(WUE)等特征进行了测定,并对其中7种植物与生长相关的生物量分配特征进行了分析。结果表明:1)16种植物的最大Pn、 最大TrWUE分别为8.07~35.96 μmol CO2·m-2·s-1、3.16~29.64 mmol H2O·m-2·s-1、0.54~4.26 μmol CO2·mmol-1H2O;种间最大Pn与最大气孔导度(Stomatal conductance, Gs)之间存在正相关关系,其相关系数为0.77(p<0.05),线性回归斜率为26.36 μmol·mmol-1;从光合速率对胞间CO2浓度及光量子通量密度的响应曲线来看,这类植物的表观CO2补偿点均在4~5 Pa之间(28~30 ℃),表观羧化效率为0.64~1.86 μmol CO2·m-2·s-1·Pa-1,表观量子效率为0.05~0.06。2)从生物量分配来看,所测植物的个体生物量为0.05~0.39 g;单株总叶面积为 3.24~51.40 cm2;单位叶面积干重为0.40~0.77 g·m-2,根在总生物量中所占比例为5.72%~19.43%,单株叶面积比在2.92~9.00 m2·kg-1之间。种间根所占生物量的比与对应的WUE之间的比较分析结果表明,二者之间存在显著的正相关关系,其相关系数r为0.93(p<0.01)。这些结果表明,所观测的早春短命植物具有典型的C3植物特征,相比其它类型的荒漠植物具有较高的单位叶面积Pn、高Tr及低WUE,并且在生长发育过程中表现出很低的根/地上生物量比、较高的叶面积比和单位叶面积干重,说明它们具有相对高的生长速率,这与其生长发育节律相一致,反映了它们与准噶尔荒漠环境相适应的特点。  相似文献

以青海省达日县高寒草甸原生高寒嵩草(Kobresia)草甸封育系统为对照,研究了土地退化对植被生产力的影响,检验了不同人工重建措施(两个人工种植处理:混播(HB)、翻耕单播(DBF)和1个退化草地封育自然恢复处理(NR)及1个退化草地自然状态(SDL))对植被生产力的相对影响程度。结果表明,原生植被封育处理(YF)地上总生物量为265.1 g·m-2,混播(HB)和翻耕单播(DBF)处理中地上总生物量分别为原生植被封育处理的116%和68%。退化草地封育自然恢复处理(NR)和重度退化自然状态下地上总生物量分别为原生植被封育的76%和53%。YF处理根系生物量远大于其它处理。原生植被封育系统中植被地上部分碳储量为 110.14 g·m-2,地下根系(0~30 cm)碳储量为2 957 g·m-2,植被总碳储量为 3 067.14 g·m-2;重度退化草地系统中植被地上部分碳储量为 57.07 g·m-2,地下根系(0~30 cm)碳储量为 357 g·m-2,植被总碳储量为 414.07 g·m-2。由此可见,高寒草甸严重退化后,通过植物组织流失的碳达到2 653.35 g·m-2,即86.5%的碳损失;原生植被封育系统植被总氮储量为 56.85 g·m-2,而重度退化草地植被总氮储量为 18.02 g·m-2,高寒草甸严重退化使植物组织68.30%氮损失。与重度退化地相比,由于恢复重建措施增加了植物的生物量输入和群落组成,除翻耕单播处理外,其它恢复重建措施均能恢复系统植被的碳氮储量。这些恢复重建措施将会逐步改善土壤的物理和化学特性,最终使这些生态系统逐步由碳源向碳汇方向的转变成为可能。  相似文献

The water relations of five species of tropical vascular epiphytesnative to Malaysia were studied. The species were ferns: Pyrrosiaadnascens (Forst.) Ching. and Pyrrosia angustata (Sw.) Ching.;orchids: Eria velutina Lindl., Dendrobium tortile Lindl. andDendrobium crumenatum Sw. Leaf resistance as a function of leafwater potential was measured for the two ferns. The criticalwater potential at which stomata closed was found to be highin each case; –0.75 MPa and –0.5 MPa respectively.The components of water potential were estimated with the pressurechamber as functions of relative water content. For each speciescell sap was found to be dilute, pressure potential low at fullturgor, and the change in relative water content between fullturgor and wilting point small. Small values of solute potentialat full turgor were also found for the ferns and E. velutinausing a vapour pressure osmometer. Values of the bulk modulusof elasticity of the leaf tissue for each species lay withinthe range of published data. The significance of these resultsfor the epiphytic way of life is discussed. 全球气候变化包括氮沉降增加和降水格局改变, 影响着生态系统的生物地球化学循环, 进而可能会对植物的养分保持特性产生影响。研究不同氮、磷和水分梯度上植物叶片养分特性的响应格局, 对于预测氮沉降增加和降水格局的改变对植物养分策略的潜在影响, 具有一定的理论与实践意义。该研究通过3个盆栽控制实验 (施氮肥实验:0、0.5、1、2、4、8、16、32、64和128g·m-2等10个水平;施磷肥实验:梯度同施氮肥实验;控水实验:3600、 4000、4500、5143、6000、7200、9000、12000、18000和36000ml-pot-1等10个水平), 探讨了羊草 (Leymuschinensis) 绿叶氮、磷浓度和比叶面积 (Specificleafarea, SLA) 对这些环境因子改变的响应。结果表明, 在一定范围内, 施氮肥提高了羊草绿叶比叶面积和绿叶氮浓度, 但对绿叶磷浓度没有明显的影响;施磷肥显著提高了绿叶比叶面积、绿叶氮浓度和绿叶磷浓度;供水量增加提高了羊草绿叶比叶面积, 降低了绿叶氮浓度, 但对绿叶磷浓度无显著影响。这表明, 氮、磷和水分因子的改变影响了植物叶片的养分保持能力, 且不同梯度的影响程度也不同。因此, 全球气候变化可能影响植物养分利用策略, 进而可能对植被-土壤系统养分循环产生影响。  相似文献

A new species of Lithophaga is described as a small lithophaginemussel exclusively boring Madracis mir-abilis, M. decactis andM. formosa in Jamaica. The shell, musculature and pallial glandsshow modifications for live coral boring similar to those ofIndo-Pacific species of the genus. Hydrococcus brazieri and Arthritica semen on a sandflat at Coodanup,Peel Inlet, Western Australia, accounted for 89.5% of totalmollusc numbers. The mean density of H. brazieri was 9487 m–2and A. semen averaged 8105 m–2. H. brazieri grew at 0.5mm month–1 and reached maturity in 4 months; A. semengrew at 0.3 mm month–1 and reached maturity in 6 months.Somatic production in the Peel-Harvey estuarine system was estimatedto be 0.5 g m–2yr–1for H. brazieri and 4.1 g m–2yr–1for A. semen. Lepsiella vinosa\ (Lamarck), a common intertidal predatory gastropod,was studied in two zones on an exposed rocky shore in Victoria(Australia). Those from the Mussel Zone in the mid-shore primarilyate one species of mussel and had a faster rate of energy consumptionthan those from the Littorinid Zone in the high-shore, whichmainly ate one species of littorinid gastropod. Shell length,growth rate and size-specific body weight of L. vinosa wereall significantly greater in the Mussel Zone. Egg capsules ofL. vinosa from the Mussel Zone contained significantly moreeggs and more potential hatchlings per capsule than those fromthe Littorinid Zone although there were no significant differencesin the sizes of eggs or hatchlings between zones. Over a 16 month period, monthly net samples of aquatic snailswere collected from 30 sites within distributary canals anddrains in a newly-irrigated area of the South Chad IrrigationProject, Borno State, northern Nigeria. Initial colonizationin distributary canals was at the blind ends where bulrusheshad become established, the colonising species being Bulinusforskali and B. rohlfsi. These two species also invaded thedrains where B. senegalensis occurred during the rains. In aconcurrent study, weekly Typha-leaf mat samples of B. rohlfsiwere collected from three sites in a distributary canal anddata on changes in population structure, density and reproductiveactivity were obtained. Patterns of colonization are discussedin relation to the probable origins of the snails, their modesof dispersal and habitat preferences. Foraging activity of two mid- to low- shore species of limpet,Patella granulans (Prosobranchia) and Siphonaria concinna (Pulmonata)from an exposed shore on the Eastern Cape coast of South Africawas monitored. In both species, activity was compared duringspring and neap tides and, in P. granularis between summer andwinter. Rhythms of activity of the two species were similar,with foraging excursions being mainly associated with nocturnallow tide times, although some P. granularis foraged during daytimelow tides. It is suggested that foraging excursions in P. granularisare triggered by wave action. Both species foraged further onspring tides than on neap tides and this is suggested to bea result of the limited time limpets have to forage. P. granulariswas also found to forage further during summer when comparedto winter and the possibility that seasonal micro-algal productivityinfluences foraging distances in limpets is discussed. The foraging activity of both species could be divided into3 distinct phases, a relatively rapid outward phase, a muchslower foraging phase and a rapid homeward phase. Whether ornot these limpets graze throughout an excursion is not known.S. concinna was found to home to a fixed scar, although duringthe experiment some scar-swapping occurred. P. granularis didnot home to a fixed scar but possessed a ‘home range’(approx. 5 cm2) to which it returned after each excursion. Patella granularis was found to move randomly during foraging,whilst S. concinna foraged in a non-random direction -whichtook individuals upshore. No tidal-influence is thought to bepresent in this case and the possibility of a learning componentin the foraging behaviour of certain limpet species in relationto the return to optimal feeding patches is discussed. The distribution and abundance of gymnosome gastropods in theArgentine Sea and Brazil—Malvinas Confluence during 1978–1979and 1988 were studied. The collections analyzed included 768quantitative samples obtained between 48°W and the coast,and from 35°S to 55°S. Two species were found. Spongiobranchaeaaustralis was the most frequent and abundant (up to 730 per1000 m3); its presence in the area was associated with the coreof the Malvinas Current. Clione antarctica was less abundant(maximum abundance: 230 per 1000 m3) and was also associatedwith the Malvinas Current. The geographic ranges of both speciesin the area are wider than previously described. Since the rangeof S. australis in the area extends far from the range of itsprey Clio, it is not clear whether S. australis can feed onthe thecosomatous pteropod Limacina (and not only on Clio, asdescribed in the bibliography) or it starves in that area. Duringthe 1978–1979 annual cycle, the abundance of both speciesfollowed neither the abundance patterns of their prey nor ofthe total zooplankton, and differed from each other. The residencetime of swarms of both gymnosomes were shorter than one month.As a general pattern, the aggregates are rapidly transportednorthward by the Malvinas Current and also penetrate the outershelf water, but they remain there only during a short periodand cannot preclude the final expatriation. The occurrence and abundance of the toxic, chain-forming dinoflagellateGymnodinium catenatum in a Tyrrhenian coastal lagoon, the Fusaro,during an annual sampling cycle are reported. Peak abundanceswere observed from late spring until early autumn Although veryhigh cell numbers were recorded, up to 1 5 x 106 cells l–1,no monospecific bloom of this species occurred. The first observationof G.catenatum in the Mediterranean occurred in the Fusaro andthe appearance of this species in a traditional shellfish farmingarea, where no shellfish intoxication has been reported to date,is discussed in relation to human interventions in the basin.In particular, intensive dredging in recent years with resuspensionof bottom sediments may have seeded the water body with cysts.A Gymnodinium n d species, illustrated using scanning electronmicroscopy, caused a monospecific bloom in concomitance withmaximum abundances of G.catenatum, apparently outcompeting thislatter species  相似文献

The data of chlorophyll amounts in diverse bio-communities arecompiled and discussed with reference to matter production. The chlorophyll amount in euphotic zone of lakes and oceanswas less than 1 g/m2, mostly less than 0.1 g/m2. In phytoplanktonblooms it was ca. 0.1–1 g/m2. Large values of 5–20g/m2 were obtained in the outdoor mass cultures of Chlorella,in which the high population density and chlorophyll contentof the alga were observed. In terrestrial higher plant communitiesthe chlorophyll amount (ca. 1–10 g/m2) was usually higherthan in aquatic phytoplankton communities. The largest (13.3g/m2) was obtained with an evergreen gallery forest in Thailand.The chlorophyll amount of desert bio-community could be expectedto be as high as that in water blooms.
