Over 30 different prey species were found in the stomachs of roughhead grenadiers, Macrourus berglax , caught at depths of approximately 700 m off the coast of northern Norway. Crustaceans and fish were the principal prey categories and large, mature grenadiers are classified as being generalist feeders taking predominantly benthopelagic organisms. There is evidence for an ontogenetic shift in dietary composition, with a change from benthic prey to an increased reliance on benthopelagic prey as the fish increase in size and this results in reduced intraspecific competition for food.  相似文献

A new species of parasitic nematode, Neoascarophis macrouri n. sp. (Cystidicolidae), is described from the stomach and stomach wall of the marine deep-water fish Macrourus berglax (onion-eye grenadier) in the eastern Greenland Sea (North Atlantic Ocean). The new species, studied using both light and scanning electron microscopy, is characterised mainly by the location of the vulva near the posterior end of the body (a short distance anterior to the anus), non-filamented eggs, the structure of the mouth, a short vestibule and the length of the spicules (567-615 and 144-156 mum). Metabronema insulanum Solov'eva, 1991 is transferred to Neoascarophis as N. insulana (Solov'eva, 1991) n. comb.  相似文献

Although three species of the genus Macrourus are recognized in the Southern Ocean, DNA sequencing of the mitochondrial COI gene revealed four well-supported clades. These barcode data suggest the presence of an undescribed species, a conclusion supported by meristic and morphometric examination of specimens.  相似文献

Roughhead grenadier Macrourus berglax were collected during the Flemish Cap bottom survey (1991–2001, NAFO division 3M, depth of 200–720 m) and on commercial vessels (1998–2000, NAFO divisions 3L, M and N, depth of 700–1700 m). The abundance of roughhead grenadier, as well as their average size, increased with depth. Age and length composition of the catches showed clear differences between the sexes. The proportion of males in the catch declined in the larger length classes and there were no males in the largest length classes (25 cm). There were differences in the growth trajectories of the two sexes; both sexes grew similarly up to 9 years, but the male growth was slower thereafter. The pre-anal fin length at first maturity ( L PA50) for roughhead grenadier females was 28·5 cm, whilst the age at 50% maturity was 15–16 years. Individual total fecundity varied between 8522 and 61 844 oocytes. Macrourus berglax had a prolonged life cycle and multi-aged population structure, with differences in growth and mortality between males and females, slow maturation and low fecundity.  相似文献

The otoliths of the scarid Scarus schlegeli (Bleeker) from the Lizard Island on the northern Great Barrier Reef showed a series of clear periodic bands. The rate at which bands are deposited on the otoliths was distinguished by mark-recapture experiments using tetracycline and marginal increment analysis. Mark-recapture experiments were carried out both in the field and in a large aquarium system. One otolith band was deposited during the liberty periods of July 1990 to April and September 1991 while two similar bands were formed from November 1989 to February 1991. The marginal increment analysis indicated that annual bands were formed around the austral summer. Scales also displayed regular period check marks. These provided relatively reliable aging estimates for the younger fishes up to 5 years.  相似文献

Prior to making inferences from otoliths about the residence time and growth rate of glass-phase anguillid eels Anguilla in estuaries, it is necessary to validate the deposition rate of microincrements in the otoliths. Glass-phase American eels Anguilla rostrata (Lesueur), which had been captured near the mouth of an estuary in Maine, USA, prior to freshwater exposure, deposited increments at a daily rate at ambient temperature and salinity in a field and laboratory study. The regression for glass eels not possessing a transition ring was: I=0.976(D-1)+0.434, where I is the number of otolith increments distal to a fluorescent mark placed on the otolith at the beginning of the experiment, and D is the number of days in the experiment, which ranged from 7 to 49. The slope was not significantly different than 1. Unexpectedly, many glass eels deposited the transition ring during the experiment, although this ring had previously been thought to mark entry into fresh water. The regression for these glass eels was: I=0.961(D-1)-3.880, and the slope was not significantly different than 1. The negative intercept suggests that approximately 4 days were lost from the otolith record during deposition of the ring. This study demonstrated daily deposition of increments prior to freshwater exposure and demonstrated that deposition of the transition ring is not linked to freshwater entry.  相似文献

It has been recently demonstrated that some primary otolith afferents and most otolith-related vestibular nuclei neurons encode two spatial dimensions that can be described by two vectors in temporal and spatial quadrature. These cells are called broadly-tuned neurons. They are characterized by a non-zero tuning ratio which is defined as the ratio of the minimum over the maximum sensitivity of the neuron. Broadly-tuned neurons exhibit response gains that do not vary according to the cosine of the angle between the stimulus direction and the cell's maximum sensitivity vector and response phase values that depend on stimulus orientation. These responses were observed during stimulation with pure linear acceleration and can be explained by spatio-temporal convergence (STC) of primary otolith afferents and/or otolith hair cells. Simulations of STC of the inputs to primary otolith afferents and vestibular nuclei neurons have revealed interesting characteristics: First, in the case of two narrowly-tuned input signals, the largest tuning ratio is achieved when the input signals are of equal gain. The smaller the phase difference between the input vectors, the larger the orientation differences that are required to produce a certain tuning ratio. Orientation and temporal phase differences of 30–40° create tuning ratios of approximately 0.10–0.15 in target neurons. Second, in the case of multiple input signals, the larger the number of converging inputs, the smaller the tuning ratio of the target neuron. The tuning ratio depends on the number of input units, as long as there are not more than about 10. For more than 10–20 input vectors, the tuning ratio becomes almost independent of the number of inputs. Further, if the inputs comprise two populations (with different gain and phase values at a given stimulus frequency), the largest tuning ratio is obtained when the larger population has a smaller gain. These findings are discussed in the context of known anatomical and physiological characteristics of innervation patterns of primary otolith afferents and their possible convergence onto vestibular nuclei neurons.  相似文献

Nematodes of the cystidicolid Neoascarophis Machida, 1976 , are all parasites of macrourid fishes, making up at present 5 species. Several other unidentified species have also been reported in several fish species from the northern and southern Atlantic Ocean, including 1 from Macrourus carinatus (Günther) (Macrouridae) in the southwest Atlantic Ocean. During a parasitological survey carried out on samples of M. carinatus from Patagonian waters, nematodes referable to Neascarophis were found in ulcers in the gastric mucosa. These nematodes Neascarophis sphaerocaudata n. sp. closely resemble N. macrouri by the posterior position of the vulva and the dilated posterior extremity in females. However, the new species differs from N. macrouri mainly by its larger size, a larger muscular esophagus, and a widely globose posterior extremity in females. SEM study of cephalic structures also showed morphological differences between both species, especially in the morphology of the submedian labia and lateral pseudolabia. In view of these differences a new species is proposed.  相似文献

To assess the periodicity of micro‐increment formation in otoliths of Lipophrys pholis, 90 early juveniles were immersed in alizarin red S or tetracycline hydrochloride for 24 h and sacrificed after 10, 20 and 30 days. The number of micro‐increments viewed under light microscopy was significantly related to the duration of the experimental period, and the slopes of the linear regressions were not significantly different from 1. This study indicates that micro‐increments in sagittae were deposited daily and can be used as reliable sources of age information for L. pholis.  相似文献

The skin collagen of a fish, blue grenadier (Macruronus novaezelandiae), has been purified and characterized. The fish skin was readily soluble in dilute acetic acid, with no pepsin treatment needed. The collagen was purified by salt precipitation. Skin samples from fish of various ages showed that even in the oldest sample, more than 8 years of age, the collagen was still readily acid soluble. The purified collagen had a melting temperature of 22 degrees C; the shrinkage temperature for the skin was 48 degrees C. Its tissue distribution, examined by immunohistology, and its chemical properties indicated a close homology to mammalian type I collagen. However, sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) showed that three distinct alpha-chains were present. These were purified by ion-exchange chromatography on CM-cellulose and by gel permeation chromatography on Superose 6. The three purified alpha-chain fractions were examined by amino acid analysis and by SDS-PAGE of their cyanogen bromide fragments. These data indicated that the additional chain was genetically distinct, and most closely related to the alpha 1-chain, from which it was poorly resolved on SDS-PAGE.  相似文献

Otoliths of Oreochromis niloricus initiate as separate protein granules, surrounded by numerous dark particles. These granules merge to form the sub-primordium, after a layer of calcium and a layer of protein has been added to each one. Large amounts of protein are accreted on to the subprimordium to form the primordium. Calcification takes place shortly afterwards. In the otocyst lumen filaments and vesicles are abundant and associated. They seem to contribute to the proteins of the primordium and the calcified otolith. Mitochondria, Golgi complexes and intracellular granules are abundant in the epithelium, from which vesicles extrude.  相似文献

The lagena (the third otolith endorgan in vertebrates)   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
In this review, the structure and functions of the lagena (the third otolith organ) in an evolutionary lineage of the vertebrates are described and discussed. The lagenar macula appears first in the posterior part of the sacculus of elasmobranchs; in these animals, the lagena is considered to be involved in the balance support (orientation with respect to the gravitation force). The lagena as a separate endorgan has been described in teleost fishes; in some species, the lagena is connected with the sacculus, while in other species the interrelations of these structures can be dissimilar. The lagena supplements the functions of the sacculus; in fishes (animals with no special organ of hearing), it is involved in discrimination of sound oscillations, identification of the gravitation vector, and orientation in the course of movements within the vertical plane. In amphibians, the lagena is localized in the posterior part of the sacculus, near the auditory structures; it performs mostly vestibular and (to a much lesser extent) auditory functions. In amniotes, the lagena was first separated from the sacculus; it is localized in the cochlear canal, distally with respect to the hearing organ. Information on the functions of the lagena in amniotes is rather limited and contradictory. Central projections of this organ have been examined practically only in birds. Lagenar afferents project to the vestibular nuclei and cerebellum, while some fibers come to the auditory nuclei of the medulla. The lagena in birds can be related to their navigation abilities (birds are supposed to be capable of orienting within the magnetic field of the Earth due to the magnetic properties of the lagenar otoconia; this structure can also provide detection of movements along the vertical axis. The close proximity between the otolithic and auditory endorgans in the cochlear canal of amniotes can be indicative of the functional significance of these interrelations. This aspect, however, remains at present undiscovered. In mammals (except Monotremata), there is no lagena as an independent endorgan. Validation of the ageing of deep-water fish is difficult and there are only a few instances where the rings on the otoliths have been shown to be laid down annually. Roundnose grenadier have been fished commercially in the North Atlantic since the 1960s and the adult fish have frequently been aged by counting the rings in otoliths or scales. All the ageing was done on the assumption that the rings in the otoliths or scales were annual. Between 1975 and 1992, the Scottish Association for Marine Science carried out seasonal trawling surveys in the Rockall Trough using a fine-meshed trawl, and collected otoliths from a wide size range of roundnose grenadier. An examination of the growing edge of otoliths from juvenile fish from these collections suggests that the rings in the otoliths are laid down annually. The broader, opaque zones which represent the growth phase were dominant between September and March. The thinner, hyaline zones were dominant between April and July. The apparent delay in the growth phase compared with most shallow-water species is discussed in relation to the availability of mesopelagic prey.  相似文献

A study of the morphogenesis of the grenadier anchovy retina was undertaken using light and electron microscopy. Five developmental stages from prelarvae 3 days after fertilization to adult fish were studied. In addition to the general morphology of the eye and retina, special emphasis was given to the development of the photoreceptors and pigment epithelium (PE). The earliest retinae showing structural features indicative of a functioning eye are pure cone retinae composed of rows of alternating long and short cones forming a transient, tesselated pattern. At this stage there is a conventional PE containing melanin. In older stages cone rows are separated by the newly formed rods and by PE wedges filled with diffusely reflecting guanine crystallites. The findings are compared with the retinae of other engraulidids and with the development of teleost retinae in general. Moreover, the observed structural changes are discussed with respect to the photic habitat conditions of these anadromous fish that move between coastal waters, estuary, and river.  相似文献
