Summary The changes in spatial distribution pattern during larval stage of the fall webworm,Hyphantria cunea were quantitatively investigated in the field experimental populations. The female adult deposits eggs as a cluster and the hatchlings make a compact colonial-web. In this period, the all-or-none type mortality which is characteristic in gregarious insect species was occasionary recognized before spinning a compact colonial-web. Once making a compact colonial-web, the larvae feed the leaves in the colonial-web up to about 5th instar. In this period, the movement of larvae occurred due to the local food shortage in a colonial-web and the expansion of colonial-web. As the larvae developed, the colonial-web was separated into several small groups. These larvae began to disperse about 5th instar. In this period, the local food shortage seems to be an important trigger for the larval dispersal. The mean concentration of larvae on leaves abruptly decreased, and finally the larvae became solitary at the 6th or 7th instars. The dispersal process in later larval stage is not necessarily due to the complete food shortage. The dispersal prior to the occurrence of food shortage may be a safety mechanism to protect the larvae from the food shortage.  相似文献

Summary In order to make clear the relationship between the mortality processes and aggregation on the walnut leaf beetle,Gastrolina depressa, life tables of individual colonies were developed and the major mortality factor and the mode of its action were investigated. Furthermore, the influences of the larval colony size on the survival rate and the developmental period were also investigated in the laboratory. In the laboratory, when the larvae were reared on suitable (soft) host plants, the larger the group size, the faster the development. When the larvae were reared on unsuitable (hard) host plants, the larger the group size, the higher the survival rate. In the field, one of the major mortality factors of the egg stage was physiological death. However, there was no particular relation between the egg mass size and hatchability. On the other hand, another mortality factor of eggs, predation byA. hexaspilota, tended to act more on the larger sized egg masses. The mortality of the 1st instar larvae decreased with the increase of colony size. During the larval stages, the major mortality factor was predation byA. hexaspilota andP. japonica. Both predators tended to attack the colony in an all-or-none manner. The number of male adults was much less than the number of females in the Ina populations.  相似文献

A theory and practical method are developed to evaluate insect survivorship as a continuous process in time and the effects of major factors that determine it, with a view to providing solutions to certain problems in survivorship studies. There are two ways of assessing mortality rates: nominal and marginal. A nominal rate is based on the number tallied in terms of the immediate cause of death; it depends on the method of observation employed and can be inconsistent between studies. A marginal rate is free of such inconsistency. The marginal rate attributable to the union of parasitism and disease is evaluated by frequent sampling in the field and rearing of each batch of samples in the laboratory for a short period of time. Comparing this rate with the field mortality rate, directly evaluated by sampling, determines marginal predation rate. The marginal parasitism and disease rates cannot be determined by observation. A computational method is developed to evaluate their approximate values. A step-by-step procedure of numerical calculations with data is provided in an appendix. The accuracy of estimating mortality depends on the frequency of sampling in the field and that of inspecting dead individuals in rearing. How frequently sampling and inspection should be conducted is discussed. The method of assessing parasitism developed here has a great advantage over the conventional method based on dissecting the samples, or rearing them through, that often results in a serious underestimation. Also discussed is the relative importance of mortality factors from the pest control point of view, and the concept of “joint contribution” is introduced. Other practical considerations include transportation of samples; rearing conditions; and how to deal with the “dead-in-the-field” in the samples, the “rearing-death syndrome,” and the “virtually dead” individuals. Serial transverse and horizontal sections of the tail of the 26-day larval lamprey, Lampetra japonica, were observed by light and electron microscopy. The axial structures in the tail of the larval lamprey seem to differentiate from the prospective materials derived individually from the tail bud. The latter consists of two closely adjoined cell populations (C1 and C2). C1 is a small cell cluster located posterior to the other group (C2) and consists of loosely arranged polymorphous cells. The cell cluster extends cranially as a cell sheet on the ventral surface of C2; somites differentiate from this cell sheet. C2 is composed of cells elongated mediolaterally and stacked horizontally to form a compact cell mass which is covered on each lateral surface by a basal lamina. The upper one-third of C2 seems to differentiate into the neural tube, anteceding other axial structures. The middle one-third of C2 seems to develop into the notochord, and the lower one-third into the subchord and the undefined cell cord. The central canal develops in the upper one-third of C2 through the following events: 1) appearance of cilia and a small cavity between adjoining cells; 2) appearance of microvilli in the cavity, in addition to cilia; and 3) development of junctional complexes along the luminal borders of cells surrounding the cavity. Together with these events, cells surrounding the cavity increase in number, acquiring apicobasal polarity and radial arrangement. The cavity itself enlarges by incorporation of periciliary clefts and fusion of cavities with each other to establish the central canal. Near the caudal end of the neural tube, the central canal is directly confluent with the connective-tissue space through an opening in the dorsal wall of the neural tube.

Abstract. The chaetotaxy of the first instar larva of Danaus gilippus is described in detail. Comparisons are made with several other danaine species and with the heliconiine Heliconius melpomene. A new nomenclature for the setae of abdominal segment 10 is proposed and a comparison made with that of Singh (1951). The potential use of chaetotaxy in butterfly systematics is discussed.  相似文献

Summary Distribution patterns of foundress group size ofRopalidia fasciata did not fit to 0-truncated Poisson series due to overdispersion. Six of seven distributions fitted to 0-truncated negative binomial series, but, for most cases, neither Brass' moment method nor the maximum liklihood method could be used due to disproportionately high frequency of nests with single foundress. Existence of two kinds of foundresses was suggested. This work was supported in part by a Grant-in-Aid (No. 62304002) from the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, Japan.  相似文献

Oviposition deterrents in the frass of cotton bollworm (CBW), Helicoverpa armigera larvae fed on an artificial diet (FA) and on cotton Gossypium hirsutum leaves (FC) were investigated by behavioral bioassays and electroantennography analyses in the laboratory. It was found that a water suspension or a hexane extract of the frass FA or FC, in contrast to the corresponding foods, significantly deterred oviposition of conspecifics. When hexane extracts of the frass FA and FC were further partitioned into polar and neutral lipid fractions, two polar fractions significantly reduced oviposition. The neutral fraction from frass FC also exhibited significant deterrence, although the activity was much lower than that of the corresponding polar fraction. The polar lipid fractions contained several fatty acids, mainly palmitic and oleic acid at the ratio nearly 1:1. A blend of authentic fatty acids of the same composition found in frass FA or FC mimicked the deterring effect. Moreover, these fatty acids and their blend at the ratio found in frass FA or FC elicited significant electroantennogram responses and typical dose-response curves. Thus, it is suggested that CBW larvae may deploy two types of oviposition deterrents: a non-specific and a specific one. The former is a blend of fatty acids, independent of food and plays an important role in oviposition deterrence, whereas the latter may be produced only when the larvae feed on cotton leaves. The possible explanations of this deployment have also been discussed.  相似文献

Early life history patterns were studied in the caridean shrimp, Campylonotus vagans Bate, 1888, from the subantarctic Beagle Channel (Tierra del Fuego). As a consequence of very large egg size (minimum 1.4 mm), fecundity was low, ranging from 83 to 608 eggs per female (carapace length [CL] 11-22.5 mm). Egg size increased continuously throughout embryonic development, reaching prior to hatching about 175% of the initial diameter. Due to low daily numbers of larval release, hatching of an egg batch lasted for about 2-3 weeks. The complete larval and early juvenile development was studied in laboratory cultures fed with Artemia sp. nauplii. At 7.0±0.5 °C, development from hatching to metamorphosis lasted for about 6 weeks. It comprised invariably two large zoeal stages and one decapodid, with mean stage durations of 12, 17, and 15 days, respectively. Larvae maintained without food survived on average for 18 days (maximum: 29 days), but did not reach the moult to the zoea II stage. Size increments at ecdysis were low in all larval stages (2.1-3.9%), indicating partial utilisation of internal energy reserves. A clearly higher increment (14%) was observed in the moult from the first to the second juvenile stage. Low fecundity, large size of eggs and larvae, an abbreviated mode of larval development, high larval survival rates during absence of food, demersal behaviour of the early life history stages, and an extended hatching period with low daily release rates are interpreted as adaptations to conditions typically prevailing in subantarctic regions, namely low temperatures (causing long durations of development) in combination with a pronounced seasonality in plankton production (i.e., short periods of food availability).  相似文献

The complete larval development (four zoeae and one megalopa) of Clibanarius aequabilis and C. erythropus, reared under laboratory conditions, is described and illustrated. The larval stages of the two northeastern Atlantic Clibanarius species cannot be easily differentiated. Their morphological characters are compared with those of other known Clibanarius larvae. The genus Clibanarius is very homogeneous with respect to larval characters. All Clibanarius zoeae display a broad and blunt rostrum, smooth abdominal segments and an antennal scale without a terminal spine. Beyond the second zoeal stage, the fourth telson process is present as a fused spine, and the uropods are biramous. In the fourth larval stage all species display a mandibular palp. The Clibanarius megalopa presents weakly developed or no ocular scales, symmetrical chelipeds, apically curved corneous dactylus in the second and third pereiopods, and 5–11 setae on the posterior margin of the telson. Apart from the number of zoeal stages, Clibanarius species may be separated, beyond the second zoeal stage, by the telson formula and the morphology of the fourth telson process.  相似文献

The species composition of malaria vector mosquitoes belonging to the Anopheles gambiae complex (Diptera: Culicidae) from >40 localities in Sudan, representing most ecological situations, was determined by analysis of ovarian polytene chromosomes. Of 2162 females, 93% were identified as An. arabiensis Patton and 7% were An. gambiae Giles sensu stricto. No hybrids were found between the two species. Anopheles arabiensis occurred in all but two sites, whereas An. gambiae s.s. was effectively limited to the southernmost, more humid localities. For chromosomal paracentric inversions, the degree of polymorphism was low in An. gambiae s.s. (inversions 2La, 2Rb and 2Rd), higher in An. arabiensis (inversions Xe, 2Ra, b, bc, d1, s; 3Ra, d). Anopheles gambiae samples from Sudan were all apparently panmictic, i.e. they did not show restricted gene flow such as observed among West African populations (interpreted as incipient speciation). Chromosomal inversion patterns of An. gambiae in southern Sudan showed characteristics of intergrading Savanna/Forest populations similar to those observed in comparable eco-climatic situations of West Africa. Anopheles arabiensis was polymorphic for inversion systems recorded in West Africa (2Ra, 2Rb, 2Rdl, 3Ra) and for a novel 2Rs polymorphism, overlapping with inversion systems 2Rb and 2Rd1. Samples carrying the 2Rs inversion were mostly from Khashm-el-Girba area in central-eastern Sudan. In the great majority of the samples all polymorphic inversions were found to be in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Sudan populations of An. arabiensis should therefore be considered as generally panmictic. Anopheles arabiensis shows more inversion polymorphism in west than in east African populations. Sudan populations have more evident similarities with those from westwards than those from eastwards of the Great Rift Valley. The possible influence of the Rift on evolution of An. arabiensis is discussed.  相似文献

We compared the eye anatomy of the scotopic fossorial Acontias orientalis, Acontias rieppeli and Typhlosaurus vermis with that of the photopic surface-living Trachylepis punctatissima, with particular reference to the retina. The findings were compared with published data on gecko species (Röll, 2001), to determine whether similar trends existed. The vestigial eye of T. vermis was not comparable with that of the other three skink species. The findings in A. orientalis, A. rieppeli and T. punctatissima were as follows: (a) A. rieppeli lacked a conus papillaris, (b) A. orientalis, A. rieppeli and Tpunctatissima were pure-cone species but lacked a fovea, (c) estimated cone density in A. orientalis and A. rieppeli was lower than that in Tpunctatissima, (d) the ellipsoid cone segment was smaller and the paraboloid segment larger in A. orientalis and A. rieppeli with the reverse in Tpunctatissima, (e) VCL%, ONL%, OPL% and GCL% in A. orientalis and A. rieppeli were significantly greater than that of Tpunctatissima, (f) INL% and IPL% in T. punctatissima was significantly greater, and (g) T. punctatissima had abundant Müller cells and fibres. Findings in the gecko species were congruent with those of the three skink species of the present study.  相似文献

Wing and body lengths of polyphagous parasitoids of leafminers are analyzed in order to understand the relationship between host and parasitoid sizes. A distinct positive relationship was observed: within each parasitoid species, smaller individuals were reared from smaller hosts. There was no difference between idio-and koinobionts in sexual dimorphism, with females being significantly larger than males in both groups.  相似文献

The adaptive significance of egg size of skippers (Lepidoptera; Hesperiidae) in Japan was evaluated in relation to the leaf toughness of their major host grasses. The hesperids that fed on tougher grasses laid larger eggs. Hesperids that laid larger eggs were larger in body size, but lower in fecundity. They also had a wider host range. Thus, despite the lower fecundity, hesperids may benefit from large eggs by having a wider host range of larvae. Grass feeders had wider range of host plants than broadleaf feeders.  相似文献

The effects of intercropping maize with cowpea, lima bean, soybean, three leguminous cover crops (Tephrosia vogelii Hook F., Canavalia ensiformis L., Sesbania rostrata Bremek. & Oberm.) and cassava on the infestation of Mussidia nigrivenella Ragonot (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and other lepidopteran ear borers were studied. Field experiments were conducted in four locations in Benin using a 4x2 pattern of maize-legumes or maize-cassava planting. Intercropping reduced the number of eggs (by >25%) and larvae (by 17.9–53%) of M. nigrivenella compared with the monocrop. Maize-C. ensiformis and maize-T. vogelii proved to be the most effective combinations for reducing M. nigrivenella populations in the different locations. Grain loss and ear damage, which were significantly correlated with the number of insects in the ear, were significantly affected by the intercrops, with losses abated by 47–84% in the four sites. No parasitized larvae were found in any of the locations.  相似文献

The antennae of Lepidoptera Neopseustidae were examined with the scanning electron microscope. The studied species, Nematocentropus cfr. omeiensis, Neopseustis meyricki, Synempora andesae, Apoplania valdiviana and Apoplania penai possess nine types of antennal flagellum sensilla: multiporous large sensilla basiconica, multiporous thin sensilla basiconica, multiporous small sensilla basiconica, multiporous sensilla trichodea, multiporous sensilla coeloconica; uniporous sensilla chaetica; aporous sensilla chaetica, aporous stylus-shaped sensilla chaetica, aporous sensilla styloconica. The multiporous sensillum type here termed “multiporous large sensillum basiconicum” is unknown from other Lepidoptera and probably constitutes an autapomorphy of the family Neopseustidae. This sensillum type is remarkable by having a single base in female Apoplania and Synempora while in male Apoplania it has a bifid or trifid base, and in male Synempora it is composed of two or three incompletely separated hairs. This may be the first recorded example of a sexually dimorphic lepidopteran sensillum type. The stylus-shaped sensillum chaeticum is a primitive type which occurs only in some lower Lepidoptera.  相似文献
